The Doobie Brothers – Quadio Boxed Set (2020) [Blu-Ray Pure Audio Disc]

Blu-Ray Audio Boxed Set Spotlights Four Of The Band’s Essential Early Albums With Quadraphonic And High-Resolution Stereo Mixes Of Toulouse Street, The Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, And Stampede.

The Doobie Brothers celebrate two major milestones this year as the band marks its 50th anniversary and its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November. The 50th Anniversary Tour that was also planned for this year has been rescheduled for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic (new tour dates below). This will be the first time that principal band members Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, Pat Simmons and John McFee have toured together in more than 25 years.

Before the band is welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rhino will release a new boxed set that highlights some of the music that helped make the Doobie Brothers one of the most popular bands of its generation. THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO will feature quadraphonic mixes of Toulouse Street, The Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and Stampede. The four Blu-ray audio discs come in replicas of the original vinyl record sleeves and are all packaged together in a clamshell box.

For this collection, all four albums have been mastered using the original four-track Quad mixes. The set includes both the quadraphonic and high-resolution stereo (19224 DTS-HD Master Audio) mixes for each album. To enjoy the Quadraphonic mix as intended, the Blu-ray audio discs should be played using Surround Sound.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO brings together four essential albums from the band’s early days. It begins with the group’s second album, Toulouse Street, which was released in July 1972. The record achieved platinum status and launched the group to stardom with the hits “Listen to The Music,” “Rockin’ Down the Highway” and “Jesus is Just Alright.”

The following year, the band returned with The Captain & Me, which was certified double-platinum on the strength of hits “Long Train Runnin’” and “China Grove,” as well as fan favorites “South City Midnight Lady” and “Without You.” These back-to-back classic albums represent one of the greatest one-two vinyl punches of the 1970s. Many songs from the albums are still played every day on the radio, a testament to the timelessness of the music.

In 1974, the Doobie Brothers released the group’s fourth album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. The record peaked at #4 on the albums chart and was certified double-platinum. It also featured the band’s first #1 hit, “Black Water,” which was originally released as the B-side to “Another Park, Another Sunday.”

Stampede is the final studio album featured in THE DOOBIE BROTHERS: QUADIO. Released in April 1975 and certified gold, it also peaked at #4 on the albums chart. It includes the Top 40 hits “Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)” and “Sweet Maxine.” Stampede would be The Doobie Brothers’ last studio album with original singer/guitarist Tom Johnston until he re-joined the band in 1989.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:05:43 minutes | 1,08 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Alpha

After its recording of Dvořák’s complete chamber music with piano, the Busch Trio now tackles three works by Franz Schubert, including his famous Piano Trio No. 2. While the dying composer dedicated this masterpiece ‘to nobody, save those who find pleasure in it’, as if urging them to enjoy the life that was gradually ebbing away from him, his Notturno, D. 897 expresses an anguish and a sense of tragedy that makes it one of the most eloquent examples of Romantic lyricism.

Schubert’s early period is represented by his very first piece for piano and strings, the single-movement Sonatensatz D. 28, which he composed at the age of fifteen. Written following the youthful Schubert’s expulsion from the Imperial Choir School in Vienna after his voice broke (he lost his mother the same year), this piece, still heavily influenced by Classicism, offers a troubling counterpoint to the works of his Romantic maturity, which reflect both the joy of creation and the suffering wrought by illness.

Byron The Aquarius is no stranger to true music fans. In January 2020 he gathered his friend musicians in Atlanta for a few day session at Patchwerk Studios under supervision of Jeff Mills, a pioneer of Detroit Techno and the owner of Axis Records. The result is a fantastic mix between Soulful House and Jazz Music with a touch of Blues.Might hope was that with each live musician Byron engaged with would result in something different and this was definitely the case. For instance with Veteran Drummer “Lil John” Roberts, the tracks of Byron became more loose, but because the technique of “Lil John” is so precise, the tracks

have a steady foundation where just about anything would sound great upon. With Trumpeter Dashill Smith and Flutist Rasheeda Ali (both recorded at different sessions), the tracks graciously parted to accommodate these sounds, almost as if they were made especially for their solo parts. The bass player, Chocolat, who is initially from Brasil gave the tracks a latin samba feel that was wonderfully unexpected.

There was a moment when Jeff Mills, the 57-year-old techno pioneer, had established a career outside of the dancefloor, one in cinemas and museums. He continues today to question the association of electronic music with clubs and the overwhelming majority of world producers that tailor their music to dance. While looking for other forms of electronic music, he was dismayed to find that almost all music that didn’t have a dance beat was labelled “ambient” – or something similar. He then sketched out the first lines of a project intended for older music fans that rarely go out but still have the essence of nightclubs running through their veins. He developed an interest in artists who integrate jazz into their electronic productions, through sampling or live recordings, with the desire to work with them and provide something more.

Jeff Mills has joined forces with producer/pianist Byron The Aquarius here. Signed to Sound Signature (Theo Parrish’s label), Byron is a legend on the Detroit scene thanks to his unforgettable EP Highlife (and his keyboard on Flying Lotus’ Roberta Flack) and is known for his piano jazz played on top of house beats. Mills proposed that they create an album together with the idea of creating “an avant-garde escapade” that would reimagine “what electronic music is capable of”. Byron the Aquarius called upon an array of musicians who all recorded in separate sessions. Among them was the incredible Philadelphia drummer Lil John Roberts, who accompanied DJ Jazzy Jeff as Herbie Hancock. The result is several rhythmic house compositions (New Beginning notably) in which Jeff Mills accentuates the musicality and the orchestration, although he is often left out of the electronic composition. The groove on Spirits of Juju is lustful with its Chucho Caldes piano lines, while Timeless is more of a jazzy New-York house track. The climax comes with Space and Time and its organic, drummed house beat (featuring an ultra-groovy bass-solo from the Brazilian Chocolat Costa) which brings together the dancefloor and musicality like never before. And seeing as club-goers aren’t doing much dancing in 2020, this album seems most appropriate. – Smaêl Bouaici

Robert Schumann (1810-1856), Caroline Shaw (1982), Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)

A compilation of quartets by Schumann, Shostakovich and Caroline Shaw from the acclaimed American string quartet, Calidore String Quartet, exploring the visceral forms of expression that exist at the intersection of music and language. For this recording the Calidore String Quartet gathered music which transmits ideas by imitating language; its rhythms, cadences and intentions. But it also explores what happens when music substitutes for language. When it fills the void of forbidden speech or even how it carries on when language has been exhausted.

The Calidore String Quartet has been praised by The New York Times for its “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct” and the Los Angeles Times for its balance of “intellect and expression.” Recipient of a 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists, the Calidore String Quartet first made international headlines as winner of the inaugural $100,000 Grand Prize of the 2016 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition. The quartet was the first North American ensemble to win the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, and is currently in residence with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two).

Camilla Nylund – Wagner at Wahnfried (2020)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 38:46 minutes | 377 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

In cooperation with the Bayreuth Festival and BR-Klassik, we announce the release of Bayreuth 2020: Wagner at Wahnfried. This album features Siegfried Idyll, performed by the Festival’s Music Director Christian Thielemann and members of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, and the Wesendonck Lieder, with Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund as soloist.

Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon, expressed DG’s pleasure at working closely with the Festival once again, both online and in staging and recording a unique live event: “The Bayreuth Festival has shaped the reception history of Wagner’s music, and for us at Deutsche Grammophon, building a relationship with its team has been a truly enriching experience. (…) The challenges of summer 2020 have proved just how pro-active our partnership can be: working together, we succeeded in making the entire Festival programme available to a global audience online via DG Stage in no time at all. On top of that, and in keeping with Wagner’s own feelings about rethinking and creatively breaking with tradition, we made the joint decision to document for posterity the novelty of an opening concert held at Haus Wahnfried under the direction of Maestro Thielemann.”

The global spread of the Covid-19 pandemic has had disastrous consequences across many domains, particularly culture and music. Concerts and festivals have been cancelled worldwide and it has required a great deal of ingenuity for artists and organisers to find a way to spread their message.

The Bayreuth Festival was no exception to the crisis’ wrath, but Christian Thielemann decided to hold a virtual festival (in which operas are filmed and shown online) with a real-life concert in Villa Wahnfried, built by Wagner to house his entire family within close proximity to the Festival Theatre (thanks to the generosity of King Louis II of Bavaria). The audience, masked and installed in the garden, respect social distancing and follow the concert on large video screens.

The anecdote is well-known, Siegrief-Idyll was composed as a birthday present for Cosima Wagner-Liszt and was played on Christmas morning 1870 by thirteen musicians in Tribschen, where the soon-to-be wedded couple were staying next to Lake Lucerne. This original and intimate interpretation by Christian Thielemann is played with a collection of musicians that were set to play the 2020 Festival. For the occasion, German composer and arranger, Andreas N. Tarkmann, has realised a deft instrumentation of Wesendonck-Lieder which is played by the same musicians. The works are sung by the great Wagner soprano Camilla Nylund, who was also unable to perform at the 2020 festival like the rest of her colleagues. – François Hudry

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 36:00 minutes | 399 MB | Genre: Electronic
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Editions Mego

Caterina Barbieri somehow recalls both Laurie Spiegel and Lorenzo Senni on her staggering debut album for Editions Mego, with ‘Ecstatic Computation’ yielding her most striking and accessible experiments in pointedly explorative synthesis.

Working at the point where deep, learned R&D meets sophisticated expression of soul, ‘Ecstatic Computation’ is one of those rare LP’s that comes close to divining the ghost in the machine. In further pursuit of the themes underlining Caterina’s ‘Patterns of Consciousness’ [2017] and ‘Born Again In The Voltage’ [2018] records, here she uses more complex sequencing techniques and pattern-based operations to generate the kind of vivid, hallucinatory trance states that many electronic music followers arguably spend their lives seeking.

With ‘Ecstatic Computation’ Caterina’s basically mastered the art of extracting a contemplative wonder from her machines, creatively using formal process to manipulate the listener’s temporal and proprioceptive senses, subtly distorting our perception of time and space with spellbinding and psychedelic effect. Most crucially, just like her fellow Italian composer, Lorenzo Senni, Barbieri achieves this effect through minimalist means, with a certain magick lying in the way she allows her machines’ full voice to speak as fluidly as the languages of classical music, but with the immediacy of Trance.

From the vertiginous scale and epic breadth of ‘Fantas’, thru the intensely expressive miniature ‘Spine of Desire’, to the balletic agility of ‘Closest Approach to Your Orbit’, Barbieri veritably dances on our nerve endings, before swiftly inverting that headlong futurism with the chamber-like design of ‘Arrows of Time’, featuring vocals by Annie Gårlid (UCC Harlo) and Evelyn Sailor, and wrapping up with the visceral ecstasy of ‘Pinnacles of You’ and a spine-freezing finale ‘Bow of Perception’.

It’s glorious, life-affirming stuff, sure to send her audience stratospheric.

The collection highlights?Bird’s pioneering bebop recordings for Savoy Records from 1944-1948, featuring jazz legends Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, John Lewis and more. The package includes faithfully restored original album artwork, plus a booklet containing vintage photos, rare ephemera and new liner notes by GRAMMYr-winning author Neil Tesser.

To celebrate the centenary of Charlie Parker’s birthday on August 29th 1920 in Kansas City, this impeccable compilation brings together sessions recorded by the saxophonist for the Savoy label between 1944 and 1948. 28 tracks have been restored and remastered by Paul Blakemore, with music by legends such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell and John Lewis, a veritable soundtrack to the birth of bebop. Some of the tracks are taken from an almost mythical session from November 1945 which some baptised ‘The Greatest Jazz Session Ever’, with Miles, Max Roach and Curley Russell presented as Charlie Parker’s Reboppers. The virtuosity and acrobatic poetry displayed by Bird and his friends revolutionised jazz, which had until then never known such freedom and technical excellency. Of course, the themes themselves (Donna Lee, Chasin’ the Bird, Milestones, Now’s the Time, Parker’s Mood, Marmaduke…) are so gorgeous that they have all become standards in their own right. Charlie Parker not only rewrote the jazz rulebook but also invented a language and an aesthetic that would go on to influence countless musicians. An essential album. – Marc Zisman

Born in Bologna, Zavalloni attended the Conservatorio di Musica “Giovan Battista Martini” and also studied classical and modern dance for several years.

Zavalloni frequently collaborates with the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen. In 2002, Andriessen composed a piece, La Passione, specifically for her and violinist Monica Germino. That song is based on the Canti Orfici by the poet Dino Campana.

In 1993, Zavalloni began a collaboration with Louis Andriessen, who wrote several works for her: Passeggiata in tram in America e ritorno; La Passione; Inanna; Letter from Cathy; and Racconto dall’ inferno, the recording of which resulted in her having been awarded a Diapason d’Or in 2008. Andriessen also composed the role of Dante in La Commedia and the role of Anaïs Nin in his new opera Anaïs—premiered in July 2010—for her.

Once more, the extraordinary musicians of Colosseum have produced an equally extraordinary and first-class live album. During the summer tour of 2005 Miles Ashton, the great live sound engineer who runs his own studio in Watford, recorded all of Colosseum’s concerts to 24-track digital. Guitarist Clem Clempson and Keyboard player Dave Greenslade spent long days at Clem’s studio auditioning all the performances looking for that magical mix of performance and natural sound quality and put together a complete show to run over two CD’s. So now, you can enjoy a complete Colosseum concert with the fanstastic voice of Chris Farlowe, the virtuoso playing of Clem Clemspon, Dave Greenslade and Barbara Thompson plus the outstanding bass player Mark Clarke – and of course drumming legend Jon Hiseman.

The first set features performances from The Theaterhaus in Stuttgart / Germany ( June 11th 2005) together with the both “Lights” and the Jack Bruce Classic “Rope Ladder To The Moon” from The Music Hall in Worpswede / Germany ( April 23rd 2005 ). The second set was recorded at The Treibhaus in Innsbruck / Austria ( June 11th 2005 ).

Although Barbara Thompson played alongside Dick Heckstall-Smith on the first three original albums this new release is the first featuring her with the band – and she has bought a whole new dimension with her. The boys are more than delighted, especially since now they are seeing more women in the audience!
