Colosseum was one of the most exciting British rock bands of the ’70s and while they made fine studio albums, notably the classic Those Who Are About To Die (1969), it was on the road, playing night after night to devoted fans, that the group led by master drummer Jon Hiseman really came – alive! Mercifully, thanks to skilled recording engineers, many of their best shows were captured on tape. This superb collection of live performances reveals Colosseum blasting at full strength and with extraordinary power and passion. This set is packed with alternative versions of many of their most iconic songs and arrangements. Thanks to this treasure house of high quality recordings, professionally restored by digital craftsman Eroc, the band comes alive and kicking for us to enjoy 50 years later.

On June 24th 1994, Colosseum played their first concert together for 23 years. Jon Hiseman said ‘Despite many requests from fans and promoters over the past couple of decades, I never seriously considered reforming the original Colosseum. But the release of all the albums on CD in the early ’90’s was extremely successful and generated a lot of new interest in the band. When Dave, Dick, Clem and Chris ganged up on me in 1993 it became clear there was no escape. A date was set and I found Mark in America and we all met up in my studio on June 17th 1994 and I gave the count in for ‘Those About to Die’. We played as if the band had never been apart’.

2014 album from the veteran British outfit. To play a new Colosseum album is to step into the unknown. Anything could happen. All bets are off. While less questing bands are content to issue fading photocopies of their best-selling work, TIME ON OUR SIDE is the sound of old friends embarking on new adventures. Eleven years have passed since TOMORROW’S BLUES: A lifetime in rock ‘n’ roll. The album may have been a pleasure to record, at drummer Jon Hiseman’s own Temple Music Studio in Surrey, yet it’s completion marks the end of a period of some uncertainty. “We started it in 2010 by meeting in the studio and playing through demos that had been written by the band members,” the drummer remembers. “But after 2010, the future of Colosseum was always going to be decided by whether Barbara would be able to tour again.” of course, multi-instrumentalist Barbara Thompson is a vital part of the Colosseum story. The completion alone of TIME ON OUR SIDE, then, is a towering achievement. That this new album is so dazzlingly successful is testament to the enduring genius of one of Britain’s most inventive lineups. Almost a half-century after Colosseum’s formation, this is unmistakably the sound of a band with gas still in the tank and endless lightbulbs popping over their heads. “I know that when we get together we all feel like we are coming home,” says Hiseman. “This album was easy to make and it just feels right”.

Gary Karr, acclaimed as “the world’s leading solo bassist”, is, in fact, the first solo doublebassist in history to make that pursuit a full-time career. It is a career that adds new lustre to his already lustrous 1611 Amati doublebass which was given to him by the widow of Serge Koussevitzky. Since his debut with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic in 1962, Karr has performed as soloist on six continents with orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Simon Bolivar Orchestra (Caracas, Venezuela), Jerusalem Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, and with all the major orchestras of Australia. Gary Karr performs on this release with Harmon Lewis on pipe organ for a group of classical pieces by Beethoven, Bach, and more.

HBO Max is spreading holiday cheer with the debut of Carrie Underwood’s new music special “My Gift: A Christmas Special From Carrie Underwood.” In the Max Original, Underwood performs a combination of beloved traditional favorites celebrating the joy and hopefulness of the holiday, as well as new original material from her first ever full-length Christmas album My Gift, which was released earlier this fall. The very last release with Dina Ugorskaja, who passed away in September 2019 aged 46. The programme includes the 24 Preludes Op. 28 by Chopin and J.S. Bach’s Inventions.

J. S. Bach’s Inventions – unfortunately still regarded as mere exercises – have fascinated Dina Ugorskaja since her childhood thanks to their incredibly refined wealth of ideas, particularly when it comes to just two voices, where it is up to the player to discover how able you really have to be in order to master the task. Standing in contrast to this is one of the most challenging cycles in piano music, in both a musical and a technical sense, Chopin’s Preludes, with their rapid changes between different, and at times highly polarised, feelings and sentiments; a synthesis imbibed with disarming naturalness that makes it almost impossible for a performance to bring out the music itself and not the interpreter. The tension between the deceptive straightforwardness of Bach and the simplicity required by the complexity of Chopin makes this an exciting combination.

Future Nostalgia is the second studio album by English singer Dua Lipa. Lipa began working on the album in early 2018, enlisting writers and producers such as Jeff Bhasker, Ian Kirkpatrick, Stuart Price, The Monsters and the Strangerz and others in order to create a pop record with a “nostalgic” and electronic feel. “Don’t Start Now” was released as the album’s lead single on 1 November 2019. The song attained both critical and commercial success, becoming her seventh top 10 entry on the UK Singles Chart and first top three entry on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Musically, Future Nostalgia has been described by Lipa as a “dancercise class”. She stated that its songs will incorporate genres of disco and pop, inspired by artists such as Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Moloko, Blondie and Outkast. Dua Lipa has stated that the album is intended to offer escapism from life’s more serious side.

This Bonus track edition features the single version of “Levitating”, with a guest feature from DaBaby.

I wanted to make music that takes your mind away from that. I wanted to just make it a bit easier for me to get out of bed and not think about the negative things that are going on in the world all the time.
