Drummer Elvin Jones may have been breaking down new rhythmic boundaries at the time with John Coltrane’s Quartet but his own sessions as a leader were not all that innovative. This quartet set with altoist Charlie Mariano, bassist Richard Davis and either Roland Hanna or Hank Jones on piano is an example of how the avant-garde of the era was starting to influence the more mainstream players. The music is in general safe but enjoyable with the virtuosic bassist Richard Davis often taking solo honors on what was in reality a modern bop date.

The second album by Elvin Jones as sole title rights leader (excluding the co-op ensemble that recorded the stunning and essential progressive jazz icon Illumination!) has the drummer sounding more like a backup musician, as he claims no compositional duties or noticeable solo space. In fact, this is one of the very best albums in the career of alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano, who occupies the bulk of lead lines and improvising responsibilities. He’s so up-front, and on an instrument that is not John Coltrane’s main instrument – the tenor sax – that the title is also a bit of a misnomer. The value of Jones as a bandleader lies in his concept of using fellow Detroiter Sir Roland Hanna or brother Hank Jones on selected tracks, or in the case of three tracks, no pianist. Bassist Richard Davis rounds out this truly brilliant ensemble of burgeoning mid-’60s jazz stars, who play an enticing collection of standards, bop, compositions of Bob Hammer, and originals from several modern sources. A stone cold bebopper and Charlie Parker devotee at the time of this recording. Mariano is the standout performer. He swings easily but mightily on the title track paralleling Coltrane’s “Milestones,” stretches the Charles Mingus evergreen “Reincarnation of a Lovebird” (titled here as “Love Bird”), and pulls out all the stops with Hank Jones during an only slightly flawed (they miss two notes) version of the tricky “Anthropology.” They tack a calypso beat onto Duke Ellington’s “Fantazm” in a playful, modern dress, and stroll on the quirky Hammer composition “That Five-Four Bag” as an offshoot retort to Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five.” The three tracks sans piano include a walking version of “Everything Happens to Me”; the ballad “Smoke Rings,” where the band excepting Mariano is relaxed; and Frank Sinatra’s “This Love of Mine,” where the emotive saxophonist dips into humor, even a bit ribald. The variety from cut to cut is engaging, and there’s nothing over the top, even the drumming of Elvin Jones. With the musicality at a high level, Dear John C. needs revisiting by drumming students and jazz fans to note how teamwork, shared values, and held-in-check dynamics benefit the overall quality of music. It seems this recording is underrated when over time it should never be. Dear John C. is deserving of an excellent rating.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is the seventh studio album by the British singer-songwriter Elton John. Released in 1973, it has come to be regarded as one of his best and most popular albums. In 2003, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The album was ranked No. 91 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and No. 59 in Channel 4’s 2009 list of 100 Greatest Albums.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was where Elton John’s personality began to gather more attention than his music, as it topped the American charts for eight straight weeks. In many ways, the double album was a recap of all the styles and sounds that made John a star. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is all over the map, beginning with the prog rock epic “Funeral for a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)” and immediately careening into the balladry of “Candle in the Wind.” For the rest of the album, John leaps between popcraft (“Bennie and the Jets”), ballads (“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”), hard rock (“Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting”), novelties (“Jamaica Jerk-Off”), Bernie Taupin’s literary pretensions (“The Ballad of Danny Bailey”), and everything in between. Though its diversity is impressive, the album doesn’t hold together very well. Even so, its individual moments are spectacular and the glitzy, crowd-pleasing showmanship that fuels the album pretty much defines what made Elton John a superstar in the early ’70s.

Empty Sky was followed by Elton John, a more focused and realized record that deservedly became his first hit. John and Bernie Taupin’s songwriting had become more immediate and successful; in particular, John’s music had become sharper and more diverse, rescuing Taupin’s frequently nebulous lyrics. “Take Me to the Pilot” might not make much sense lyrically, but John had the good sense to ground its willfully cryptic words with a catchy blues-based melody. Next to the increased sense of songcraft, the most noticeable change on Elton John is the addition of Paul Buckmaster’s grandiose string arrangements. Buckmaster’s orchestrations are never subtle, but they never overwhelm the vocalist, nor do they make the songs schmaltzy. Instead, they fit the ambitions of John and Taupin, as the instant standard “Your Song” illustrates. Even with the strings and choirs that dominate the sound of the album, John manages to rock out on a fair share of the record. Though there are a couple of underdeveloped songs, Elton John remains one of his best records.

High Heart is the 5th album by US saxophonist and composer Ben Wendel. With a surge of interest in his profile over the last few years, Ben returns with an album that is his most definitive yet.

It is a personal statement and reflection of his own journey in a society of increasing complexity, oversaturation, and social imbalance. An album that opens discussion and raises questions about how artists create art that is personal and meaningful in an increasingly impersonal time.

As Ben explains: “The digital age has created a profound paradigm shift and challenged what it means to be an artist. It has potentially democratized culture to the point of irrelevance. There is no longer high or low – culture or entertainment – it has become about relevance or irrelevance. What is the best way to navigate this time while retaining a sense of authenticity, vulnerability and identity? Although this is a fundamental question for artists in any era, it feels particularly difficult to answer at the moment. In this sense, High Heart is more a question than a statement.

The song titles in this project refer to different challenges I have experienced while interfacing with a global audience. For example, “Drawn Away” refers to the dangers of technological overuse and losing perspective, while “High Heart” speaks to the human desire to connect and express through these new mediums at the risk of feeling isolated and cut off.

Ultimately, High Heart is a project of hope, and for me, a focused and personal message in a time where it has become harder for all artists to find their way through the noise.”

“With his technical fluency, strategic melodic thinking and cleanly dusted tone, Wendel has become an idol to an entire generation of young tenor saxophone students”. (The New York Times)

In April 2016, Black Stone Cherry released “Kentucky”, to great critical and commercial success. Kentucky reached new chart peaks for the band worldwide, and was followed by massive touring through the United States, Europe and Australia. In the midst of this all, the band found the time and dedication to record “Black to Blues”. The EP „Black To Blues“ features six blues-classics originally written and/or performed by legendary musicians like Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Booker T. Jones, Albert King and Freddy King. On “Black to Blues”, these traditional songs get wildly Black Stone Cherry-fied, while also paying homage to the original on the other hand.

“I know it’s crazy for four rock n’ roll dudes to make a blues EP, but it’s us sharing with everyone the music that’s been our DNA from day one,” Black Stone Cherry vocalist and guitarist Chris Robertson says. “Blues is the music we listen to when we sit around on the bus with a bottle of bourbon.”

Black To Blues’ pays homage to the fertile 1960s era of electric blues where the masters pushed boundaries with experimentation and volume. The EP includes covers by Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, and Albert King. The album was recorded in a burst of fevered inspiration this past spring at David Barrick’s Barrick Recording, the same studio where BSC recorded its recent album ‘Kentucky.’ Self produced, tracked the music in two days, and favored a raw, in-the-moment production aesthetic to capture the inspired sessions. Chris adds: “Our approach was to do these songs as we’ve written them, with attitude and heavy guitar.”

„Black To Blues“ opens with the Howlin’ Wolf classic ‘Built For Comfort.’ Here, they harnesses the song’s dark energy with foot-stomping burly riffage, impassioned whiskey and honey vocals, and a peaks and valleys arrangement that features virtuosic bursts of bluesy guitar brilliance, smoky quiet passages, and mountains crashing down climaxes. Throughout the EP, the imaginative arrangements, soulful vocals, and subtle band interplay evoke the halcyon days of heavy blues acts such as Free and Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. On ‘Champagne & Reefer’ they mesmerize with deft slide guitar playing and powerful contrasting haunting and hefty dynamics. Other standouts include a raucous version of Muddy Waters’ ‘I Want To Be Loved,’ complete with jaw-dropping blues-rock guitar solos, and a clever rendition of Freddie King’s ‘Palace Of King”, there they “moved one note to make it more dark,” Chris reveals. The blues is always a sage teacher, and making the ‘Black To Blues’ EP was a transformative experience for Black Stone Cherry. Chris says: “It was humbling and freeing at the same time. It reignited our passion for this music, and it will definitely have an effect on our next album.”

A crew who lives to rock hard, the badass Southern Hard Rock quartet known as Black Stone Cherry – Chris Robertson (vocals/guitar), Ben Wells (guitar), Jon Lawhon (bass), and John Fred Young (drums) – are fired up for the release of their sixth studio album, “Family Tree”. A blue collar band, “Family Tree” marks Black Stone Cherry’s third release in 2 years, following up the band’s 2016 chart-topping studio album, “Kentucky”.

Following their previous album ‘Kentucky’ which reached #5 in the UK Top 10 Album Chart in 2016, Kentucky’s favourite arena rockers return with another relentless dose of hard riffing rock on their 6th studio album ‘Family Tree’, out on April 20, 2018 on Mascot Records. ‘Kentucky’ reached their highest ever charting positions across Europe and Top 40 in the US, which cemented them even further in the hearts of music lovers across the globe. ‘Family Tree’ was again recorded and produced by the band themselves in Barrick Recording in Glasgow, Kentucky in the same way and same place as their eponymous debut album, which broke the band out of the small Southern town and onto the world stage. It’s their blend of heart on sleeve lyrics, hard rocking riffs, Southern rock grooves and huge choruses that have seen them go from club shows to 12,000 capacity venues. ‘Family Tree’ also features Southern Rock icon Warren Haynes. They have toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Chickenfoot, Alter Bridge, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Nickelback, Rival Sons, Theory of a Deadman, Halestorm, Shinedown and Airbourne. As the world plummeted into the COVID-19 pandemic, the four members of Black Stone Cherry were nestled deep in the woods of Kentucky, scrambling to complete their 7th album. There, they could feel the disease closing in as they watched the news daily, and it became apparent the album they were finishing featured lyrics that were eerily prescient. The resulting 13-track record is broadly emotive, and anthemic. It was finished just before the global lockdown was imposed, and it’s aptly titled, The Human Condition.

In the past two decades, Black Stone Cherry has set a new standard for Southern rock, revitalizing the tradition with burly riffs and stirring rock hooks. The four-piece band have blazed their own way in establishing a legacy. The Human Condition was self-produced and tracked in bassist Jon Lawhon’s recording facility, Monocle Studios, in March 2020. The guys went in with 4 songs, wrote new songs, and recorded some beloved unreleased favorites. For the first time, the band opted to not record basics live and instead meticulously multitracked. Each member endured grueling sessions to ensure the collective studio mindset of achieving “epic performances.” The results are stunning—the grooves feel organic, the riffs are mountainous, the performances are urgent, and the hooks.

Over six previous albums, Kentucky’s Black Stone Cherry continued to prove that their hoary hybrid of Southern rock, grunge, post-metal, and hard rock remains vital. The Human Condition underscores their deserved reputation as the brotherhood of Southern swamp metal, but there is immense growth in their creative process. Previously, BSC’s recording process always involved cutting basic tracks while playing live on the studio floor. Working in bassist Jon Lawhon’s Monocle Studios, the band did a 180: For the first time ever, they meticulously multi-tracked every note and sound. The sonic detail is indeed expansive, but the group sacrificed none of their power or swagger. They also felt a sense of urgency; while recording, the COVID-19 pandemic was spreading exponentially, and they undertook marathon sessions to complete the record. They finished days before the world shut down. The result is a startlingly fresh-sounding BSC album. Opener “Ringin’ in My Head” offers muted feedback and dissonance before a bone-crunching guitar riff introduces the melody. Though written years ago, its lyrics are oddly prescient: “People people, your attention please/I need to tell all y’all about a new disease/it’s crept right up from beneath our nose…I got a ringin’ in my head/My bones are shakin’…I can feel it in my chest…The whole world’s been shaken.” The jam welds shattering grunge to metal as vocalist Chris Robertson sounds the alarm. “Push Down & Turn” offers scorching swamp metal. Robertson wails about his struggles with bipolar disorder and the band protects him with a maelstrom of overdriven riffs, chugging bass, and John Fred Young’s thundering kick drums. “When Angels Learn to Fly” and “In Love with the Pain” are both exercises in the kind of anthemic AOR stadium rock balladry employed by bands such as 38 Special and the Outlaws. The muscular, dynamic production frames infectious, melodic hooks, vulnerable lyrics, and chiming group choruses. The metallic psych in “The Chain” channels Soundgarden in the best possible way. “If My Heart Had Wings” melds Dobro, electric guitars, piano, synth strings, and majestic processional drumming as Robertson heartbreakingly confesses his shortcomings in a relationship strained to the breaking point. BSC’s customary inclusion of a classic cover remains in a noisy, slamming, irresistible read of ELO’s “Don’t Bring Me Down,” offered with impeccable backing vocals and the filthiest bass line Lawhon has yet recorded. On “Devil in Your Eyes,” Ben Wells channels Sonny Landreth’s slide guitar sound before raging into dark, swirling Pearl Jam-esque hard rock. “Keep On Keepin’ On” had to close the set. Despite its fist-pumping riff and hard rock vamp, the lyrical melody and group refrain return us to the tragic uncertainty of the present: “When everything that’s good is gone, got to keep on keepin’ on.” The Human Condition’s polished production might startle, but it’s key to the band’s most adventurous, mature, and finely wrought album to date, hands down. – Thom Jurek

Fight for Your Mind is an album by Ben Harper. Released in August 1995, it was his last solo album before adding the Innocent Criminals to his line-up. Reviews were generally very positive, praising Harper’s fusion of multiple genres, from folk (“Another Lonely Day”), folk rock (“Gold to Me”), Black Sabbath-style riffing heavy metal (“Ground on Down”) and politically charged reggae (“Excuse Me Mr.”).

After Harper’s well-received debut, Welcome to the Cruel World, he expanded on his fanbase by touring relentlessly with jam bands like Dave Matthews Band. On this, his second album, Harper added a more refined sense of his own intense spirituality, such as on the gospel-influenced album closers, “Power of the Gospel”, “God Fearing Man” and “One Road to Freedom”.

Fight for Your Mind fully embraces Ben Harper’s influences (Dylan, Marley, Havens, and Hendrix) into a complete sound while simultaneously broadening his thematic and musical palette. Oliver Charles’ tactile drumming and Leon Mobley’s percussion work give a sparkle to Harper’s music that was absent on his debut. Songs like “Gold to Me” and “Excuse Me Mr.” show Harper growing as a poet, approaching ideas via more subtle avenues. The single “Ground on Down” and epic jam “God Fearing Man” capture some of the explosive energy of his live performances. The latter makes allusions to “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and that’s exactly what Harper does — allows his trademark Weissenborn guitar to scream out to his audience. The only misstep on this album is his sophomoric weed anthem “Burn One Down,” but one might argue that a little tarnish adds character. -AllMusic Review by Ryan Randall Goble

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Ben Harper has teamed up with celebrated Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite for his Stax Records debut. Get Up! is a piercing song-cycle of struggle and heart. This striking mix of blues, gospel and R&B features ten vivid pieces, skillfully rendered in cinematic detail, all written or co-written by Harper. Standouts include “Don’t Look Twice,” “I Ride At Dawn” and “I’m In I’m Out And I’m Gone.” Musselwhite’s searing harmonica accentuates Harper’s mesmerizing vocals, creating a thrilling listen from start to finish. Harper and Musselwhite are also joined by Jason Mozersky (guitar), Jesse Ingalls (bass) and Jordan Richardson (drums), who perform with scintillating precision. Get Up! is one of the most exciting releases in 2013.

One of the thrills of Get Up! is hearing Harper rock on hard blues, refreshing from a powerful singer-guitarist. – Rolling Stone

This musical hookup between these two experienced roots artists who have more in common than it seems at first glance, is a natural evolution for both. Ben Harper seemed like an old soul, even when he began his career, dipping into classic R&B, gospel, and blues but spinning them through his dark, folk-funk persona. His work with the Blind Boys of Alabama showed him to be welcomed by veteran artists who clearly felt he was a kindred spirit. Harpist/guitarist Charlie Musselwhite’s extensive résumé typically moved him past the often limiting structure of the Chicago blues where he first made his presence felt, to Tex-Mex, Cuban, Americana, swamp rock, country, and even jazz. The two connected on a 1997 John Lee Hooker session and have worked together intermittently since, both live and in the studio. This outing, tellingly released on the Concord/Stax imprint, strips the sound down, occasionally to just acoustic guitar and harp as on the opening of “Don’t Think Twice,” and the closing deep Delta blues “All That Matters Now,” reworked into “It Hurts Me Too.” But the duo also plug in for tough, rugged blues and blues-rock as on the heart thumping “I’m in I’m Out and I’m Gone,” a twist on David Bowie’s “The Jene Genie” riff that itself was nabbed from the Chicago blues catalog. Even with Musselwhite’s substantial involvement, this is Harper’s show as he produces, sings every song, and seems to be leading the music’s direction with the harmonica player urging him on and adding to the already deep groove. They dip into harder rocking territory for the charging “I Don’t Believe a Word You Say” with Musselwhite pulling out his Little Walter influences with electrified blowing. The skeletal, ghostly, repeated riff of the deadly gunslinger “I Ride at Dawn” is a stark reminder of how less is more as Harper’s slide enhances the dangerous elements reflected in the song’s ominous lyrics. The six-minute title track — the disc’s longest cut — is classic Harper, marrying a funky bassline with the declaration expressed in the song’s title as Musselwhite takes a few licks from Paul Butterfield to edge the track into a laid-back red zone where the singer typically thrives. But the twosome have some fun, too, in particular on the spirited, easygoing, sexed-up blues “She Got Kick,” one of the few instances where harmonica is not an integral component of the mix. Ultimately, Get Up! earns its titular exclamation point as a successful combination of two talented veterans feeding off each other’s dusky, creative spirit.

Ben Harper has unveiled his new album Winter Is For Lovers (ANTI- Records), and in many ways his entire musical life has culminated in this moment. The solo recording, which features just Harper and his Monteleone lap steel guitar, is a 15-song work of original instrumental compositions imagined as a symphony. Harper has pushed musical boundaries since his 1994 debut and his lap steel guitar has played a tremendous role in his distinct sound throughout his career. But he’s never made an album that so purely distills his reverence for the instrument, and his mastery of it. Starting today fans can order Winter Is For Lovers here from a limited 2000-piece pressing of the album on 180g vinyl, autographed, numbered and hand stamped. Orders will be fulfilled this week. The release date for the standard vinyl and digital version will be announced later this fall.

Meditative and affecting, the music featured on Winter Is For Lovers is deeply ingrained in Harper’s DNA and leads directly back to The Folk Music Store, the influential California instrument shop his grandparents opened in the 1950s. The store hosted luminaries of all stripes, including Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, the Rev. Gary Davis, Doc Watson and John Fahey. While Harper worked in the shop throughout his childhood, he met and even strung guitars for iconic players like Ry Cooder, Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, David Lindley and Jackson Browne.

Winter Is For Lovers philosophically explores the American Primitive movement pioneered by Leo Kottke and the aforementioned John Fahey. It swirls with the music Harper heard growing up, listening to the blues, Hawaiian and classical guitar masters in his mother’s record collection. He gravitated early on to the distinct wail of the slide guitar, learning finger picking from slide master Taj Mahal and later studying with Chris Darrow of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a lap steel virtuoso who had a major influence on Harper’s lifelong embrace of the instrument.

While Harper was composing parts of the album he was also reading Infinite Jest, and Winter is deeply influenced by the book’s unique narrative structure. As Harper learned that author David Foster Wallace fused together a series of short stories to create a bigger narrative, he saw a similar potential with the pieces that would become Winter Is For Lovers, melding together a series of works named after, and inspired by, locations across the globe that hold a special place in his heart.

Notable songs on the setlist are mashups of “Love Me Harder” and “breathin,” and a medley of “Right There,” “You’ll Never Know,” and “Break Your Heart Right Back.” The record ends with “thank u, next.” On Twitter, Grande described the record as “a little something to thank u for everything and to make saying goodbye to this chapter a lil easier.” Listen to k bye for now below.

“Thank U, Next” (stylized in all lowercase) is the fifth studio album by American singer Ariana Grande. Following the release of her previous studio album “Sweetener”, Grande began working on a new album in October of the same year, enlisting writers and producers such as Tommy Brown, Max Martin, Ilya Salmanzadeh and Andrew “Pop” Wansel. The album was created in the midst of personal matters, including the death of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and her break up with fiancé Pete Davidson. Upon its release, “Thank U”, Next received universal acclaim from music critics, many of whom praised the cohesiveness and production of the album.

The hyperactive Ariana Grande is back with thank u, next, just seven months after the release of Sweetener. And, most importantly, following the fatal overdose of British rapper Mac Miller, her ex-boyfriend. With this title, following a brief romance with comedian Pete Davidson, Ariana reinforces her image as a strong woman, despite her young age (25 years old) and her career’s past hardships. Pop music caramelised with some R&B, the twelve tracks of this fifth album − produced to perfection by Tommy Brown − forthrightly lift the veil on her former relationships. With her four-octave voice, the mini Mariah Carey, also known as Ari, is walking in the footsteps of Mimi in the 1990s and 2000s, and it shows (NASA)! And for a whiff of soul, she even dares sample Wendy Rene’s soul-crushing After Laughter (“After laughter comes tears”) on fake smile and adds the perfect amount of brass on bloodline. Shattering streaming records, the pop star knows how to surround herself and even co-wrote thank u, next with Victoria Monét. – Charlotte Saintoin
