The Chiaroscuro Quartet was formed in 2005 by the violinists Alina Ibragimova (Russia) and Pablo Hernán Benedí (Spain), the Swedish violist Emilie Hörnlund and cellist Claire Thirion from France. The Chiaroscuro Quartet made their first appearance on BIS with acclaimed recordings of Joseph Haydn’s Sun Quartets, Op. 20, described in The Strad as ‘period-instrument performances of the utmost subtlety and refinement’. The Op. 20 quartets are widely regarded as a mile-stone in the history of the genre. When Chiaroscuros now return to Haydn, it is with his last complete set of quartets, begun in 1796 when he was 64 years old.

The Six String Quartets, Op. 76, form one of the most renowned of Haydn’s sets of quartets, and carry the stamp of their maker: No other set of eighteenth-century string quartets is so diverse, or so unconcerned with the norms of the time. In the words of Haydn’s friend and contemporary Charles Burney ‘they are full of invention, fire, good taste and new effects’. On the present disc, the first of two, we hear the first three quartets, including the ‘Fifths’ quartet (No. 2) so named after the falling perfect fifths with which it begins. The most famous of the set – and possibly of all Haydn quartets – is No. 3, however: the ‘Emperor’ quartet with its second movement: a set of variations on the ‘Kaiserlied’ which Haydn had recently composed to the greater glory of the Austrian Emperor Franz II.

The Haydn performances of the Chiaroscuro Quartet are not the first ones to have had a historical orientation (gut strings, period bows, heavily restricted vibrato), but the group perhaps takes the possibilities of the authentic performance group further than others have. True to the ensemble’s name, the players employ the percussive attacks and the edgy high register to produce big contrasts, seeing in these late Haydn works not a mature summing-up of his career but a restless exploration of new realms. Listeners who want a dose of gentility from their Haydn may wish to sample carefully here. The set of variations in Op. 76, No. 3 containing the tune that became the Austrian national hymn may lack a certain level of sentiment, but the Chiaroscuro has absolutely no problem creating a distinctive group of Op. 76 quartets among all of the dozens of versions of these pieces on the market. The key to the success of the group’s performances is that they do not lose Haydn’s humor even as they amp up the energy. This is the quality without which a Haydn quartet performance cannot survive, and it is here in abundance in passages like that involving the lone high note in the finale of the String Quartet in D minor, Op. 76, No. 2. That quartet, with its Andante that sounds like a minuet and its stormy actual minuet, is especially suited to the Chiaroscuro’s sound, but the whole thing is absorbing and is enhanced by fine Sendesaal Bremen sound.

Nobuo Tsukahara, better known as Nobuo Hara is a Japanese jazz saxophonist and bandleader. Hara played in a military band during World War II and in a Tokyo officer’s club after the war. He took leadership of the ensemble Sharps and Flats in 1952, which he would lead until the 1980s. This band recorded copiously and appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival. Sharps and Flats accompanied Chiemi Eri and included sidemen such as Norio Maeda, Shotaro Moriyasu, and Akitoshi Igarashi.

The fast rising Anglo-Asian singer-guitarist, Chlara, returns with an album of guitar-centric classy interpretations of her favourite pop classics, including Hotel California, Stuck On You and True Colors, alongside contemporary hits including Hello (Adele), Stay With Me (Sam Smith) and Jealous (Labrinth). Many of the songs have been a part of Chlara’s live shows over the past few years, so working on the tracks on the studio was an easy fit.

British-born Filipina singer / songwriter Chlara (born Chlara Isobel Magtultol) labeled as Philippines acoustic songbird, Chlara spent the early years of her life living in England before moving to the Philippines at the age of nine. Her father Cesar who passed away when Chlara was only two years old was a music lover and left with Chlara his love of music. From the age of three Chlara was already singing and was very much influenced by the music that was constantly played at home, listening to Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Air Supply, The Carpenters, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. After moving back to the Philippines, Chlara’s mum Gina enrolled her into a few singing schools, While regularly joining the school singing programs and plays Chlara also began playing the guitar at the age 11, learning from his brother and with her own self study, she would watch & learn from videos on YouTube. Before starting college Chlara had already started writing her own songs. Growing up all Chlara ever wanted to do was sing and have the world hear her songs and now is fully focused to reach her dreams having signed a long term management and recording agreement with Evolution. She was featured in Evosound’s album “Voices of Love” together with the finest female vocals featuring Susan Wong, Olivia Ong, Julienne Taylor, Emi Fujita, Stacey Kent, Katie Melua, Chantal Chamberland with her version of Lionel Richie’s Stuck on You.

Pianist Lomheim is a regular performer at clubs in the Minneapolis St. Paul area, and his rhythm section have both played with top names in jazz. The Trio has a very polished and straight-ahead approach to nine tunes that happened to includes five jazz favorites and three originals played by Chris Lomheim, Gordy Johnson, and Phil Hey, three leading players in the Minneapolis/St. Paul jazz community. The original title tune by Lomheim was recorded away from the studio in a chamber music hall at Hamline University.

All tracks are complete takes with no editing. This audiophile recording was made using tube and ribbon mics, Millenia Media preamps, Meitner converters, and DSD editing with the Sony Sonoma. The surround speakers are used simply for hall ambience. This album also has the technical warning about assigning the center channel string bass to the left and right front channels if you lack a center channel speaker.

“New York Time offers jazz fans a wonderful opportunity to hear two rising stars of the genre (McBride, Jackson) performing with two respected elders (Cobb, Walton). Having spent most of his time since the late ’90s re-appropriating pop, funk, rock, and fusion elements into his progressive jazz albums, bassist Christian McBride makes a joyously off the cuff return to straight-ahead acoustic jazz on 2006’s New York Time. Working here with the seasoned rhythm section giants of pianist Cedar Walton and drummer Jimmy Cobb as well as an equally engaging contemporary, tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson, McBride has crafted a back-to-basics album that, while firmly in the mainstream jazz tradition, works to remind listeners why they dug him in the first place. New York Time is as creatively inspired, forward-thinking, and unexpected as 2000’s Sci-Fi and 2003’s Vertical Vision are with their mix of electronic-funk and angular, postmodern jazz, and McBride can’t escape the fact that his true gift is for swaggering, double-breasted, no holds barred, late-night, straight-ahead modern jazz. Primarily, it’s his big, full, commanding double-bass tone that not only drives his bandmates forward, but buoys them on fat swells of sound. It’s that natural acoustic tone and earthy pulse of McBride that fit so well with this kind of no-fuss jazz. It’s also that sound, paired with the soulfully urbane and elegantly muscular chops of Walton, Cobb, and Jackson, that makes New York Time a jazz lover’s dream.

In the hearts of thousands, No.1 on the Top RCA list. While the bulk of famed conductor Ernest Ansermet’s recordings were made with L’Orchestre de la Susise Romande, there were a few with the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra and the very occasional foray into recordings with London orchestras, one of these being with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1959.

This is the stuff of which dreams are made. The Royal Ballet Gala is one of the finest RCAs recorded in London’s Kingsway Hall. The chunks of great ballet music are well served by orchestra, conductor and engineer. Performances are executed to a very high standard — the Royal Opera House Orchestra, both then and now, rank as one of the finest of opera orchestras.

Conductor Ansermet keeps the pace moving, giving the listener the impression of a dance event rather than a dramatic concert hall reading. With the exception of some of the Tchaikovsky scenes, the music is light and remains so under Ansermet’s gentle touch. Each ballet is given full attention by the players, something not always attained at Covent Garden during long ballet nights! The threat of eternity does have its merits. The recorded sound is simply amazing! Lustrous is one word that comes to mind, accurate is another.

Earth, Wind & Fire hit their peak in 1975 with their multi-platinum album “That’s the Way of the World”, excelling the band into absolute stardom with their hit title track and funky “Shining Star”. If you could have only one EWF release, this would be the best choice, and even better yet it has now been released on a quad hybrid SACD that also contains the follow-up 1976 album “Spirit”. Their powerful blend of funk and soul extends to the remainder of the album with no dull moments found within. “That’s the Way of the World” can easily be considered one of the strongest albums of the ’70s and has been impeccably remastered by Michael J. Dutton for the Dutton Vocallian reissue label.

That’s The Way Of The World
Earth, Wind & Fire has delivered more than its share of excellent albums, but if a person could own only one EWF release, the logical choice would be That’s the Way of the World, which was the band’s best album as well as its best-selling. Open Our Eyes had been a major hit and sold over half a million units, but it was World that established EWF as major-league, multi-platinum superstars. Fueled by gems ranging from the sweaty funk of “Shining Star” and “Yearnin’ Learnin’” to the gorgeous ballad “Reasons” and the unforgettable title song, EWF’s sixth album sold at least five million units. And some of the tracks that weren’t major hits, such as the exuberant “Happy Feelin’” and the gospel-influenced “See the Light,” are equally powerful. There are no dull moments on World, one of the strongest albums of the 1970s and EWF’s crowning achievement.

Spirit
With That’s the Way of the World having enjoyed multi-platinum success, Earth, Wind & Fire had a lot to live up to when the time came for another studio project. And the soul powerhouse didn’t let anyone down (either commercially or creatively) on the outstanding Spirit, which boasted hits ranging from the optimistic “On Your Face” and the passionate funk classic “Getaway” to the poetic ballad “Imagination.” Philip Bailey is as charismatic as ever on “Imagination” and the gorgeous title song. Maurice White’s message and vision (an interesting blend of Afro-American Christianity and Eastern philosophy) was as positive and uplifting as ever, and as always, EWF expressed this positivity without being Pollyanna-ish or corny. And even if one didn’t take EWF’s calls for unity, hard work, self-respect, and faith in God to heart, they had no problem with their solid grooves.

One of the most beautiful Eddie Henderson albums we’ve heard in years – a richly modal session with lots of classic influences, recorded beautifully, and with a feel that will make it a real standout! The set list includes some killer jazz standards – like Wayne Shorter’s “Prince Of Darkness” and “Footprints”, Miles Davis’ “So What” and “All Blues”, and Monk’s “Well You Needn’t” and “Round Midnight” – not to mention great versions of “Green Dolphin Street”, and “Old Folks”. And even though the tunes are classics, they’re played with the fresh modernism of the mid 60s Miles Davis quintet – a style that’s got angular edges, but also some deeply soulful moments – played with elegance by a group that includes Bob Berg on tenor, Dave Kikoshi on piano, Ed Howard on bass, and Billy Hart and Victor Lewis on drums.

Eddie Henderson’s Columbia debut places him in the context of a classic series of modern compositions, from Wayne Shorter’s modal masterpiece “Prince Of Darkness,” and “Footprints,” to his read of his mentor Miles Davis’ “So What,” and “All Blues,” and, a pair of Monk numbers, as well “Round Midnight,” and “Well, You Needn’t.” The band assembled for this date is more than up to the challenge. Drummers Billy Hart and Victor Lewis, pianist Dave Kikoski, bassist Ed Howard, and the inimitable Bob Berg on tenor, accompany Henderson’s trumpet and flugelhorn with requisite heat and polish. Henderson’s arrangements work better on the more adventurous tunes: on the Shorter and Miles cuts, Henderson’s more aggressive and looser, allowing his band to stretch those tunes to the margins. His ultra-modernization of “On Green Dolphin Street,” sounds like he’s trying to update Miles’ particular read of the composition, rather than just take a new look at it for its own merit. He does likewise with “Someday My Prince Will Come,” and D.L. Hill’s “Old Folks.” He turns in stellar versions of the Monk tunes, with interesting and angular rhythmic turns in them along the changes. This is a solid date for Henderson, who doesn’t record nearly often enough.

Recorded around the same time as her groundbreaking work with Louis Armstrong, this album is representative of Fitzgerald’s best vocal work. Recorded over a two-day period in October, 1957, Fitzgerald sings familiar ballads on this release accompanied by lush orchestral arrangements courtesy of Frank DeVol, with tenor sax legend Stan Getz contributing to four songs.

Ella Fitzgerald was accompanied by an orchestra arranged by Frank DeVol for this fine studio session. Most of the songs are veteran standards, Stan Getz’s warm tenor helps out on four tunes, and – although this is not an essential release – her voice was so strong and appealing during this era that all of her recordings from the mid- to late ’50s are enjoyable and easily recommended.

Violinist Elmar Oliveira joins the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in performing Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons as conducted by Gerard Schwarz. Recorded in May 1980 in California.

Antonio Vivaldi cast “The Four Seasons” in the form of four concertos for solo violin and string orchestra. Concertos are designed to feature an instrument which not only enjoys an especially prominent role but plays technically brilliant, or virtuosic, passages. In addition to juxtaposing the sound of the solo violin to the full ensemble, Vivaldi occasionally added a few instruments with the solo violin to create the musical textures of chamber music. Each of the concertos that comprise “The Four Seasons” follows a three-movement plan that Vivaldi helped to establish as the standard concerto form.

“Emil Gilels stands out as giant among giants”, wrote Gramophone when the Odessa-born pianist died in 1985. “In terms of virtuosity he was second to none, yet his leonine power was tempered by a delicacy and poetry that few have matched and none has surpassed”. Ludwig van Beethoven was at the heart of Gilels’ repertoire and in 1968 he recorded this complete cycle of the composer’s piano concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra and its long-standing maestro, another musical titan of the era, George Szell.

Painted from Memory is a collaboration between Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach. The collaboration commenced with “God Give Me Strength”, a commission for the 1996 film “Grace of My Heart”. Apparently pleased with the result, the pair expanded the project to this full album, the first for Costello after an absence of two years, and for Bacharach after an absence of 21 years. Lyrics and music are co-credited to both Bacharach and Costello. “I Still Have That Other Girl” won a Grammy Award in 1998 for “Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals” for Bacharach and Costello.

Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach first collaborated on “God Give Me Strength,” a sweeping ballad that functioned as the centerpiece in Allison Anders’ Grace of My Heart. It was a stunning song in the tradition of Bacharach’s classic ’60s work and it was successful enough that the composers decided to collaborate on a full album, Painted from Memory. Wisely, they chose to work within the stylistic parameters of Bacharach’s ’60s material, but Painted from Memory never sounds like a stylistic exercise. Instead, it’s a return to form for both artists. Bacharach hasn’t written such graceful, powerful melodies since his glory days, and Costello hasn’t crafted such a fully realized album since King of America. It’s a testament to both that even if the album is clearly in Bacharach’s territory, it feels like a genuine collaboration. Often, the music not only evokes the spirit of Dionne Warwick, it’s reminiscent of Elvis’ torching ballads for Trust. Costello keeps Bacharach from his schmaltzier tendencies, and Bacharach keeps Costello from overwriting. With its lush arrangements, sighing brass and strings, gentle pianos, and backing vocals, it’s clearly a classicist album, yet it sounds utterly timeless. Its melodies are immediate, its emotions subtle, its impact lasting – and, with that timeless sound, Painted from Memory illustrates that craft cannot only be its own reward, it can be genuinely moving.
