The band OM is cult. The four musicians Urs Leimgruber (saxophone), Christy Doran (guitar), Bobby Burri (Bass) and Fredy Studer (Drums) wrote jazz history as pioneers of European Electric-Free Music from 1972 to 1982. They bring together the experiences of a young generation electrified by Jimi Hendrix, fascinated by John Coltrane and inspired by Free Jazz. OM put rock music into spontaneous play with an uncertain outcome.

After a long break OM presents 2008 on Intakt Records the live recording of a brilliant concert at the Jazzfestival Willisau: with highly explosive free improvised music (“Willisau”.

Recorded during the early days of Summer 2020, JEM Records artists took to the studio to record their unique interpretations of John Lennon’s compositions. From the early Beatles days of “I Call Your Name” to the final recordings of (Just Like) Starting Over,” this record is the culmination of decades of love of Beatles and Lennon songs. Featuring performances by The Weeklings, The Grip Weeds, The Anderson Council, Richard Barone, Johnathan Pushkar, The Gold Needles and The Midnight Callers. The cover is a reproduction of Al Hirschfeld’s “Lennon at Home.”

The album includes the first complete recording of The Beatles “What’s The New Mary Jane?” by The Weeklings as well as a very compelling “Child of Nature”/Jealous Guy” from The Midnight Callers which show how John changed the lyrics from the Escher demos to his solo recording. Other tracks include a powerful Grip Weeds “Strawberry Fields Forever”. “Johnathan Pushkar’s (“(Just LIke) Starting Over, The Anderson Council’s intense “I Found Out,” and two mashup by The Gold Needles (“Hey Bulldog/Cold Turkey”) and Richard Barone’s “Revolution/Power To The People”.

WorldService Project – Hiding in Plain Sight (2020)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 35:10 minutes | 734 MB | Genre: Alternative, Indie
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © RareNoiseRecords

Over the course of its previous four albums, UK punk-jazz outfit WorldService Project carried its keen-edged, window-rattling irreverence across the globe, casting an eviscerating glance inward while spreading its message of chaotic compassion to the scattered remnants of the former British Empire and beyond. With the release of the gleefully anarchic Hiding In Plain Sight, the band’s fifth album and third for RareNoise Records, keyboardist-vocalist Dave Morecroft takes on his native land from an outsider’s perspective for the first time, having decamped for Rome in his own personal Brexit.

Not that the romance of the Eternal City has dulled Morecroft’s incisively funky edge, however. Hiding In Plain Sight combusts with the band’s trademark blend of free-jazz pandemonium, pulse-quickening grooves, daggers-drawn sardonicism and audacious punk abandon. The album perfectly channels the meltdown of modern civilization into a cathartic dance party on the far edges of the lunatic fringe, with an open-armed embrace of all comers save the power-hungry few that led us into this mess in the first place.

For this latest incarnation of WorldService Project, Morecroft assembled a streamlined group that adeptly navigates the composer’s perilous straits between taut avant-funk discipline and feral improvisatory blowouts. Bassist and vocalist Arthur O’Hara has been a mainstay of the band since 2015, though the remainder is an alchemical admixture of newcomers: saxophonist Ben Powling, drummer/percussionist Luke Reddin-Williams and, on four of the album’s nine tracks, trombonist Kieran McLeod.

Together they summon a sound that walks the tightrope between precision avant-funk and free-form exploration, bridging eras between UK punk-jazz breakouts of the 00s (Acoustic Ladyland, the F-IRE Collective) and the modern psych-jazz grooves of The Comet Is Coming and Sons of Kemet.

The meaning behind the new album’s title is (at least) twofold, though in both cases representative of formerly muted voices suddenly upraised as societal cracks become shatteringly exposed. On the one hand are the underdog heroes, as represented by WorldService Project and its like-minded compatriots around the world, whose message of unity and kinship has been drowned out for far too long.

“We’ve always been here,” insists Morecroft. “We’ve always been trying to promote a message of compassion and togetherness. We’ve always been eager to celebrate our differences but also to highlight the disproportionality that is only increasing in the world. Maybe that message has been hidden, so now we’re planting our flag in the ground, which is something that’s become more and more important to me as I grow older and stronger in my views, as well as bolder in what I’m prepared to say.”

On the other hand are the villains of our contemporary story, the hypocritical and narcissistic power-mongers who are willing to sacrifice the rest of humanity for their own personal gain. In Morecroft’s native England, of course, that venality has been thrust into the glaring spotlight by the Brexit referendum (the results of which almost immediately led Morecroft to take up residency in Italy); across the Atlantic it’s been accompanied by the nauseating rise of Donald Trump. And the album arrives as these same leaders’ reckless self-interest has condemned their populations to suffer through a global pandemic.

“This fragility hovering just below the surface suddenly comes bursting upwards with the slightest push,” Morecroft describes. “All over the world, the cracks have deepened. They were there the whole time but we’ve really become aware of them because of social media and everything becoming more polarized. Politicians used to have to at least pretend to be statesmen, to pretend that they were trying to do things for the good of the entire population. Now the whole thing is blown wide apart and it doesn’t seem to matter anymore.”

In response, Morecroft has crafted his most hard-hitting gut-punch of an album to date, one that is as excoriating in its anger as it is maniacally infectious in its raucous, darkly celebratory spirit. It’s no wonder that the band’s mascot is the nightmare-fueling jester Mr. Giggles, who unveils his demoniac trademark dance, “The Higgly Giggly Wiggly Woo,” on Hiding In Plain Sight – to be demonstrated in all its unhinged glory on stages around the world once such things become possible once again.

The reverberant echoes of Powling’s sax opens the album on “Deeper,” soon to be accompanied by a throttling funk-jazz groove that embodies the vitalizing ebullience of the contemporary UK scene, with a tinge of strobe-lit EDM around the edges. A grungy bassline hurtles forward into “Pomped Up Freddy,” a proud acknowledgement of one scribe’s disparaging comparison of Morecroft to the immortal, semi-eponymous Queen frontman. “I didn’t take as an insult at all,” the bandleader insists. “I couldn’t have ever dreamed of being compared to Freddie Mercury.”

“Where Am I” layers a sharp-tongued sax melody over a delectably filthy bed of keys and bass, reflecting the influence (direct and indirect) of producer Liran Donin and his band, Led Bib. “Sex Lies Lies and Lies” is the most explicit intermingling of the personal and professional, its Italiano ravings lashing out at both the political and the personal circumstances that led to Morecroft uprooting his life and settling in Rome. “The Kipper and the Pie” is also directed scathingly homeward, referring to a pair of barefaced lies spun by PM Boris Johnson in hawking the disastrous Brexit vote.

Following Mr. Giggles’ disruptive danceathon, “Vendetta” brings the album’s more violent tendencies to a knife-edged culmination, before allowing the mood to swing in a more optimistic direction with “Europhiles,” a heartbroken but unabashed love letter to the band’s admittedly troubled home. “Onward” lifts the occasion even higher, pointing to a brighter future that WSP not only hopes for but believes in, whole-heartedly.

“We’ve always been here,” Morecroft repeats, “and the ultimate message is we’re not going away. We’ll continue to tour despite difficulties, andwe’ll continue to spread our collaborative and compassionate mission.”

When Walter lang’s piano begins to “sing”, the hearts of the listeners suddenly begin to sing along – without exception.

The rare phenomenon that a Pianist is recognized when the first note is struck – Walter Lang is a prime example of this. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that this applies equally to his large fan base around the globe.

“Tens “is the name of the new Album as well as the current concert program, which could carry the subtitle:”world experience”.

The WALTER LANG TRIO has long left behind the usual traditional classifications into serious music and light music.

Classical, Jazz or World Music are no longer concepts that can be used to classify the music of the trio – all attempts would simply be equalized from the intimacy that goes to the heart in the very first Minute of a concert evening, then when a mixture of emotions suddenly occurs that ranges from “melancholy” to “high tension” within a single piece. It is never the case that” those up there “perform music for” those down there ” – ” up there “and” down there “suddenly come together into a common cosmos, in which at least for the duration of the concert, but ideally still long afterwards, our world appears as something completely” inviolable “perhaps even” inviolable”.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 40:11 minutes | 428 MB | Genre: Alternative, Indie
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Weird World

A Western Circular is Will Archer’s debut under his new nom-de-plume, following early EPs and an album under the now-retired Slime moniker. On A Western Circular, Archer has uncovered new depths and forged an invigorating singular sound – supple and multi-layered, honouring his acoustic heritage and influence, while building a sonic universe that commands contemporary references to everything from Frank Zappa to Yasuaki Shimuzu, Robert Wyatt to Arthur Russell.

An album that’s been in the works for the past half-decade, A Western Circular is a bold, reflective piece that directly relates to Archer’s personal experiences of life and death, centered on one particular week where they breathed with equal intensity. The record’s themes of greed, love and loyalty all relate back to that specific time. Inspired by author John Fante, A Western Circular is a spiritual voyage through life’s pushing and pulling: finding beauty in the rough, sadness in the bright. Ostensibly, it’s a poignant reflection on the duality of the human condition.

Within A Western Circular lies an exciting and varied crew of guest artists including MF DOOM, Samuel T. Herring (Future Islands), Sudan Archives, and Laura Groves, all contributing vocals to his rich, dextrous compositions. These collaborations are the by-product of several years of writing and producing. Recently, he’s appeared extensively on the debut albums by Sudan Archives (writing the lead single, ‘Confessions’, no less) and Nilüfer Yanya (contributing seven songs), alongside work with Celeste, and another writer and production credit on Jessie Ware’s Devotion.

From the elated dream to the bitter reality: to provide a proper rendering of Franz Schubert’s music, with its enormous range of expressions including all the intermediate tones, the instrument of choice must be the Fortepiano, if only for its similitude to the pianos used during Schubert’s lifetime. The model used in the present recording is based on the grand piano of the Viennese master Conrad Graf, an instrument that Schubert himself owned. Its six pedals allow Schubert’s music to be played with multifaceted pliancy and depth. The skillful use of all these pedals, which in modern instruments have been reduced to two or three, opens up a multitude of sound facets, similar to doors that open up to a multitude of rooms, each decorated in its own particular way and with its own particular style.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1-48 kHz | Time – 32:52 minutes | 384 MB | Genre: Rock

Yawning Man are an enigma. The mostly instrumental, part-surf guitar, part-psych, part-desert rock outfit have been in existence for 30 years and are spoken of in hushed tones, for they are credited with helping corrupt the young minds that went on to form Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. And yet if you didn’t live in Palm Desert, California or repeatedly watch Inside Out, a superb skateboard movie made by Gullwing Trucks in 1988, then you probably didn’t hear their music until at least five years into the 21st century.

This album is only the band’s third full-length, if you discount the digital release of the Birth of Sol demo collection in 2009 (which in itself is noteworthy because of the inclusion of ‘Catamaran’, which was covered by Kyuss on As the Circus Leaves Town, and ‘Fires of Papa’s Chili’ – both songs were on Inside Out).

Sure, the band’s members have released other music through off-shoots and side projects, but a Yawning Man album – this is their first for six years – is rare enough to be savoured, like the sighting of a whale on a boat trip.

The sub-title, The Ion Studio Sessions, comes from the Buenos Aires studio where they recorded it in a single evening while on tour in the Argentinean capital in 2015. It is as laconic, shadowy and spontaneous sounding as Nomadic Pursuits, their previous album, but the band has clearly evolved, with the addition of guest musicians and with a wider palette of inspiration.

Listening To The Music’ was written and recorded in Zephaniah OHora’s adopted hometown of Brooklyn, NY where prior to the pandemic he curated the music and frequently performed at Brooklyn traditional country music epicenter, Skinny Dennis. The 12-track collection proves that great country music can come from anywhere. The recording was produced by Neal Casal (who would tragically pass away not long after mixing was completed) along with a virtuosic band, including guitarist John Lee Shannon, pedal steel guitarist Jon Graboff, keyboardist Roy Williams, bassist Jeff Hill and drummer Arthur Vint along with special guests like Dori Freeman, Mickey Raphael and Norm Hamlet from Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard’s bands, respectively.

The end result fuses timeless twang with modern sensibilities, tipping its cap to the likes of Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings as it explores a distinctly urban, 21st-century landscape through a classic country lens. The album ultimately speaks to the power of music to bind us to our past and reinvent our future—a lush, intoxicating celebration of melody and memory that connects the considerable miles between Bakersfield and Brooklyn.

Lost Horizon: The Classic Film Scores of Dimitri Tiomkin / The Thing from Another World Suite is another of Vocalion’s very welcome SACD releases. The SACD features Charles Gerhardt conducting The National Philharmonic Orchestra – a quite fabulous recording which took place at Kingsway Hall, London in December 1975.

Although Tiomkin’s work in film had begun in 1931 it was director Frank Capra who provided the composer with the opportunity to score Lost Horizon (1937). The immediate success of Lost Horizon resulted in Tiomkin never looking back. Vocalion’s beautifully produced CD may be headed by a generous 23 minute symphonic suite from Lost Horizon, but there’s so much more to be enjoyed. Several of Tiomkin’s other major film achievements are also celebrated, including The Guns of Navarone (1961) and it’s triumphant prelude, the Howard Hawks western The Big Sky (1952) and the love theme from William Wyler’s Civil War melodrama Friendly Persuasion (1956). Another significant inclusion comes in the way of a bonus track and Tiomkin’s The Thing from Another World (1951). The Suite (10.41) consisting of Prelude, The Flying Saucer Under the Ice, Melting Sequence, The Hand, Plasma I, Plasma II, The Growing Plants, The Thing on the Walkway and Electrocution is a fine example of Tiomkin’s rare excursion into the Sci-Fi / Horror genre.

The 12 page booklet contains the original (and extensive) liner notes from the original 1976 album, but it’s a shame, however, that they were not extended to include a little on Tiomkin’s The Thing from Another World – not only is it an integral part of this wonderful compilation, but it just feels like an entire page has gone missing. On the audio side of things, Vocalion’s mastering by Michael J. Dutton (from the original master tapes) is quite superb – but in all honesty, I was never in any doubt. (Disc total 56.59)
Overall, Vocalion have once again delivered where it counts, a collection of reliable, high quality and in many ways, essential re-release albums – long may they continue to do so. (Darren Allison, Cinema Retro Soundtrack Editor)

Mingus Ah Um is a studio album by American jazz musician Charles Mingus, originally released in 1959 by Columbia Records. It was his first album recorded for Columbia. The Penguin Guide to Jazz calls this album “an extended tribute to ancestors” (and awards it one of their rare crowns), and Mingus’s musical forebears figure largely throughout.

Charles Mingus’ debut for Columbia, Mingus Ah Um is a stunning summation of the bassist’s talents and probably the best reference point for beginners. While there’s also a strong case for The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady as his best work overall, it lacks Ah Um’s immediate accessibility and brilliantly sculpted individual tunes. Mingus’ compositions and arrangements were always extremely focused, assimilating individual spontaneity into a firm consistency of mood, and that approach reaches an ultra-tight zenith on Mingus Ah Um. The band includes longtime Mingus stalwarts already well versed in his music, like saxophonists John Handy, Shafi Hadi, and Booker Ervin; trombonists Jimmy Knepper and Willie Dennis; pianist Horace Parlan; and drummer Dannie Richmond. Their razor-sharp performances tie together what may well be Mingus’ greatest, most emotionally varied set of compositions. At least three became instant classics, starting with the irrepressible spiritual exuberance of signature tune “Better Get It in Your Soul,” taken in a hard-charging 6/8 and punctuated by joyous gospel shouts. “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” is a slow, graceful elegy for Lester Young, who died not long before the sessions. The sharply contrasting “Fables of Faubus” is a savage mockery of segregationist Arkansas governor Orval Faubus, portrayed musically as a bumbling vaudeville clown (the scathing lyrics, censored by skittish executives, can be heard on Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus). The underrated “Boogie Stop Shuffle” is bursting with aggressive swing, and elsewhere there are tributes to Mingus’ most revered influences: “Open Letter to Duke” is inspired by Duke Ellington and “Jelly Roll” is an idiosyncratic yet affectionate nod to jazz’s first great composer, Jelly Roll Morton. It simply isn’t possible to single out one Mingus album as definitive, but Mingus Ah Um comes the closest.
