The Z.E.N. Trio – pianist Zhang Zuo, violinist Esther Yoo and cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan – met as BBC New Generation Artists in 2015 and have since performed concerts together for BBC Radio as well as across the UK, Europe, China, Canada and United States, including a debut at the prestigious Aspen Music Festival in 2018. In the 2019/20 season, the trio performs in North America, in a six-city tour to San Francisco, Vancouver, Santa Barbara, Boston, Washington and Miami.

Their debut album was released in 2017 on Deutsche Grammophon, featuring Brahms and Dvořák Piano Trios. Their follow-up album will be recorded during this season for the same label.

While the trio’s name, “Z.E.N.” is an acronym for the three artists’ initials, it also represents the philosophy with which they approach chamber music making – the forgoing of the self for total togetherness.

Taylor Swift has dropped another chapter in her Folklore series. “The Yeah I Showed Up At Your Party” collection includes her recent performance of “Betty” from the 2020 ACM Awards. Like the previous three Folklore chapters, this six-song themed playlist collects songs from the Billboard 200 No. 1 album, with Swift organizing the songs around a theme.

The “Party” track list also includes “The 1,” “Mirrorball,” “The Last Great American Dynasty,” “Invisible String” and the album’s first single, “Cardigan.” Swift released her live version of “Betty” from the ACM Awards on Friday, after she performed on the show for the time in seven years last week.

This is Thurston Moore’s seventh solo album, and features musicians Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) on bass and backing vocals, Jon Leidecker aka ‘Wobbly’ (of Negativland) on electronics, James Sedwards on guitar, and Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley, as well as Jem Doulton, alternating on drums. Prior to isolation during the Covid pandemic, Thurston worked in recording studios in North London until the third week of March 2020 to complete this album. By The Fire is music in flames. 2020 is our time for radical change and collective awareness and Thurston Moore has written nine songs of enlightenment, released to a world on fire. Taking a cue from Albert Ayler’s “music is the healing force of the universe”, this recording offers songs as flames of rainbow energy, where the power of love becomes our call. These are love songs in a time where creativity is our dignity, our demonstration against the forces of oppression. By The Fire is a gathering, a party of peace—songs in the heat of the moment. Some of the songs feature all of the musicians whist a few are solo guitar and vocals.

“Nine songs of enlightenment, released to a world on fire”: that’s how Thurston Moore described his album By The Fire. It might sound a bit over the top. Though by the time you reach the end of the record, it sounds like an understatement. He could have gone as far as “songs that will restore your faith in rock, and possibly even the world”. We’ve been here before though. Thurston Moore is the former Sonic Youth singer/guitarist and his seventh album By The Fire is the closest thing yet to his old band’s dissonant genius. Sometimes, it exceeds it. It’s a long album that stretches 9 tracks into almost 90 minutes. Though it flashes by like a lightning bolt. Thurston Moore is like an alchemist. Or a musical encyclopaedist. His music puts you in a trance, altering your perception of time and space. All his experience is brought to the fore in this record: whirling guitars, thumping post-punk rhythms, soothing pop melodies, free jazz that sends you insane. And that special touch of something indescribable – the very best part. Listen to the record at a high volume (go on, turn it up even higher) and the music becomes even more fascinating, revealing the slightest details and touches. The album transforms anxiety and pain (yes, this music can damage your ears) into pleasure and energy. At the age of 60, Thurston Moore plays like a 20-year-old and paves a new way for rock. Timo Van Luijk meets percussionist Kris Vanderstraeten for an enchanting exploration of liminal psychoacoustic space and animist, lower case sounds, which have been imperceptibly edited and mixed by Vincent De Roguin. Like with all his releases, this one comes with the highest possible recommendation if you’re into the most evocative strains of drone/Ambient music, and especially anything from The Necks to Leyland Kirby.

The album consists of field recordings captured at Lac Chimère, a lake in Mensono, where many unknown and untouched sound creatures reside. Within that alternate dimension Van Luijk and his co-venturer wander freely, unimpeded by convention, in a somnambulant sequence of acousmatic occurrence and ever shifting temporal parameters, thanks to Vanderstraeten unique meter and the elusive/illusive plasmic qualities of Van Luijk’s haptic rustle and and shadowy timbres, which are rendered in uncannily seamless yet amorphous form by De Rouguin, who’s previously been responsible for bringing out a similar effect in Æthenor records.

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio will release “Burn It Down”, a new live album featuring the Trey Anastasio Band. Burn It Down, was produced and mixed by Vance Powell. The 15-track collection was finished in April. However, Trey decided to focus on his more timely quarantine album, Lonely Trip, before releasing Burn It Down.

Over the past few years there’s been an indescribable momentum with TAB. The band seems to get tighter with each successive tour. This past January, we were firing on all cylinders, and it was reflected in the faces of the people coming to the shows. I could feel it and see it every single night — the intensity of the dancing, the smiles on people’s faces, the feeling of unity.

So immediately after that tour, I put plans in motion to begin a TAB album in the spring. The pandemic changed those plans, and when everything was cancelled, I began working at home on what would later become Lonely Trip.

Meanwhile, my friend Vance Powell, who produced this new TAB album, called and told me there was already enough great material on tape from the January tour to make the best TAB album ever, and make it a live album. So he started sending me mixes. I loved them. We both agreed that Burn It Down, a line from the song ‘Set Your Soul Free,’ was the perfect title, because it encapsulated exactly what had been happening onstage every night.

When I listen to this album, it reminds me how much I miss playing live music. In some ways, it’s hard for me to listen for that reason. I can’t wait to experience this again. I miss it so much.

Tricky releases his 14th studio album, Fall To Pieces, on his own label False Idols. Fall To Pieces was recorded in Tricky’s Berlin studio in late 2019. Tricky is keen to point out that the tracks on the record can be deceptive; often short, ending abruptly and moving on to the next without warning. Although instrumentation varies from bursts of tense synths, distorted dial tones, and samples, the song’s lyrics can be dark and dense. Tricky’s music has always enlisted female vocalists to carry his ideas: the majority of tracks on Fall To Pieces, including Fall Please rely on Marta Złakowska, the singer he discovered during a european tour when he was left without a vocalist on the opening night. She saved the tour from disaster. “I can tell when someone is humble and down to earth,” says Tricky. “Marta doesn’t care about being famous, she just wants to sing.”

Eric Clapton, one of the world’s pre-eminent blues/rock guitarists, once again summoned an all-star team of six-string heroes for his fifth Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2019. Held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, the two-day concert event raised funds for the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, the chemical dependency treatment and education facility that Clapton founded in 1998.

Following a six-year hiatus, the festival returned reenergised with outstanding performances by Clapton, James Bay, Jeff Beck, Doyle Bramhall II, Gary Clark Jr., Robert Cray, Sheryl Crow, Andy Fairweather Low, Peter Frampton, Vince Gill, Buddy Guy, Sonny Landreth, Lianne La Havas, Los Lobos, John Mayer, Keb’ Mo’, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Randolph, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Jimmie Vaughan and more.

Throughout the show, Clapton shared the stage with others to perform some of his best-known songs, including “Layla” with John Mayer, plus acoustic versions of “Wonderful Tonight” and “Lay Down Sally” with Andy Fairweather Low. Clapton also paid tribute to his late friend George Harrison with a searing rendition of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with Peter Frampton.

The Crossroads’ lineup offered an impressive mix of performers, with legends like Bonnie Raitt, James Burton, Robert Cray, and Jeff Beck (whose outstanding cover of The Beach Boys’ “Caroline, No” was a festival high point); contemporary stars Gary Clark Jr., Robert Randolph and Sheryl Crow; as well as rising talents The Marcus King Band, Tom Misch, and Lianne La Havas.

If the end of the 80’s sounded the death knell for many sacred monsters at the top of their art a decade or even fifteen years ago, they were the synonym of a new birth for Pink Floyd. The band has already had two lives, one with and then without Syd Barrett. When in 1985, Roger Waters left the adventure, he tried at all costs to prevent his former Playmates from retaining the name of the formation for their future projects. After a long legal battle, Gilmour, Mason, and Wright won the right to continue using Pink Floyd’s surname. In 1987, A Momentary Lapse of Reason was released, the first album of the post-Waters era. This was followed by a pharaonic tour that gave birth to the live Delicate Sound of Thunder the following year. A one-of-a-kind album in the band’s history for several reasons. First because it is the first real official Floyd live (although Ummagumma released in 1969 included two records, a live and a studio). Then because it was a huge success at the time on two levels, thanks to its different audio and video formats, new proof that the group has long grasped the primordial role played by images to accompany its music (the film Live At Pompeii released sixteen years earlier is a perfect example). Finally because it is the first album to have been played in space thanks to Soviet cosmonauts having taken it with them aboard the Soyuz TM-7 shuttle towards the Space station Mir. Its remixed and especially completed reissue brings this live having made debate into a new era.

While the end of the 80s signalled the end for a lot of great bands who had been around for the last ten or fifteen years, it meant rebirth for Pink Floyd. The group had already lived two lives – one with and one without Syd Barrett. After a long legal battle, Gilmour, Mason and Wright won the right to carry on using Pink Floyd. A Momentary Lapse of Reason came out in 1987, the first post-Waters album. A phenomenal tour followed which gave us the live album Delicate Sound of Thunder the following year. The album was different from the group’s other records for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was Pink Floyds first real live album (yes, there was Ummagumma but that was made up of two discs – one studio, one live). Secondly, it was a hugely successful tour, largely thanks to their use of both audio and visuals – images had long played a crucial role in their music (the film Live at Pompeii released 16 years earlier is a good example of this). And finally, it was the first album to ever be played in space thanks to the Soviet astronauts who took it aboard the Soyuz TM-7 shuttle when travelling to the Mir space station. This completed remixed re-release takes the acclaimed live album into a new era.

Having stood out before for its (almost too) perfect sound recording and mixing, Delicate Sound of Thunder can now be enjoyed in a remixed hi-fi version that makes you feel like you’re right there in the mobile studio doing the live recording. It’s a unique experience for the senses, even if it does slightly do away with their psychedelic touch. Pink Floyd now belonged to Gilmour and he chose to focus a large part of the concert on A Momentary Lapse of Reason before going for an all-too-short segue into their best hits, mostly coming from Dark Side of the Moon. Despite this decision (which might be a bit annoying for die-hard fans) there are enough classics from albums like Shine On You Crazy Diamond, One of These Days and Wish You Were Here to keep you satisfied. In 1988, media formats forced the band to remove some songs from their tracklist due to a lack of space. This remixed version restores the forgotten tracks to reveal a complete concert with the addition of 7 songs and guitar solos that were shortened in the first version. This gives added flavour to a performance that went down in history alongside their other live album Pulse which was released in 1995 and was met with resounding success. This record just goes to show that Pink Floyd’s concerts really were immersive experiences. – Chief Brody
