The Ascension is the eighth studio album from singer, songwriter and composer Sufjan Stevens and is the long awaited follow-up to Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell. One of the most acclaimed albums of 2015, The New York Times praised Carrie & Lowell as “restrained and meticulous” while Pitchfork declared it “a masterpiece.” In the time between Carrie & Lowell and the forthcoming The Ascension, Stevens also released Oscar-nominated music for the Luca Guadagnino film Call Me By Your Name; a collaborative album entitled Planetarium with Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner (The National) and James McAlister; The Decalogue, a solo piano work performed by Timo Andres; and scored several works for ballet: Reflections (Houston Ballet) and Principia (NYCB). The Ascension is musically expansive and sweeping in thematic scope.

Is the album title The Ascension a reference to mountaineering or the Christian festival which celebrates Jesus’s ascension to heaven on the 40th day of Easter? Judging from the album cover which looks like a stain-glass window, you’d probably go for the latter. Though the first option seems equally valid; Sufjan Stevens’ eighth album takes you on an expedition. Be careful, it’s a long journey (15 tracks in 80 minutes) but the summits are worth it. On his moving previous album Carrie & Lowell (2015) the American musician chronicled the story of his sick mother on an acoustic guitar. Here, it’s a sick world he’s talking about: America in 2020, disillusionment, anxiety and dehumanisation. And desperate times call for desperate measures! The measures that Sufjan Stevens took are paradoxical: he made this album alone but orchestrated his songs like liturgical music. The main theme running through the album is his intimate voice. He sounds like a fallen angel, multiplying his voice into a choir of 150 Sufjan Stevens in white togas, layered over an electronic backdrop that goes from retro Vangelis-style ambient music to R’n’B, while exploring sounds that remind us of what Björk did in the 90s. The Ascension is a heavenly album of contemporary pop that’s been liberated by boundless technology. It’s not easy to take everything in at first, but after listening to this record a few times it might become difficult to stop. – Stéphane Deschamps

In this second repertoire, the Franco-Belgian trio consisting of saxophonist Manuel Hermia, cellist Valentin Ceccaldi and drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq explores the sound that made them famous in Europe. The wild energy and great intensity communicated by the three musicians still contribute to a unique time-bound experience. Closer to a defined outline, their original process seems more and more clear.

The energetic potential of instrumentation is used to its fullest: from minimalist and noisy friction of the bow to a sound typhoon, the trio explores these extreme fields with the same eagerness. The new tones created by the sound objects of Sylvain Darrifourcq resonate perfectly with the creative cello of Valentin Ceccaldi: melodic, harmonic, and percussive, all at once. Manuel Hermia exerts a powerful lyricism to this mechanical thread reaching a cathartic outburst.

Sylvie Courvoisier presents a new trio album at the height of her mastery and success. “Free Hoops” follows the widely celebrated trio album “D’Agala” which “The New York Times” counted as among the best records of the year.

With every concert and every album this glorious trio’s modus operandi becomes more clear – Sylvie Courvoisier, Drew Gress and Kenny Wollesen play morphing music by turns intricately detailed and ambiguously wide open. The music Courvoisier writes is rigorously organized and calls for ensemble precision, as a few thorny unisono heads demonstrate. But the music also harbors a misterioso, dreamlike quality that may surface at any time, induced by a wistful ostinato or moonlit piano arpeggio stubbornly repeated, or by a quiet episode that underscores the depth of the trio’s sonic space.

They also do that good stuff we prize jazz for – the happy swing-ing, the coming together when they make complex material sing, and the flying apart when the players explore it on their own.

Genre: Jazz

Bob Kindred is a great tenor sax player who is consistently underrated and underexposed. Aside from some albums released by the Mapleshade label, it is not easy to find his leader albums on the market. For this second release from Venus, Kindred and co. decided to do a collection of Latin music, mostly boleros. The brawny and sexy sound of Kindred’s tenor is a perfect match for the mysterious and romantic music. The music transports the listener to a steamy bar in a subtropical country in Latin America. One can almost feel the hot and humid air.

Robert Hamilton Kindred, 11 May 1940, Lansing, Michigan, USA. Raised just outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kindred began studying clarinet and later played this instrument and the alto saxophone with the Philadelphia Youth Jazz Band, under the direction of Jimmy DePriest. At 17 he was with Pennsylvania Sixpence, a small band that played swing and dixieland and which played at many east coast venues and also toured Europe and made records. After graduating from college, Kindred left music and entered the business world, becoming a corporate head-hunter and forming his own company. At the age of 30 he heard Phil Woods in concert and decided to being playing again. He studied with Woods and after two years decided to re-enter the world of music on a full-time basis. He joined the ongoing Glenn Miller Orchestra and then joined Woody Herman, appearing on 1975’s Live At Carnegie Hall. Among other artists with whom he played around this time were Charles Earland, Harry Sweets Edison, Hank Jones, Mel Lewis, Shirley Scott and Buddy Tate, and he has also played with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. Kindred, who would gradually become better known as a tenor saxophonist, also plays baritone saxophone and flute. His own concert performances include a tribute to Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges, To Ben And Johnny, With Love, and an annual work, Bending Towards The Light … A Jazz Nativity, of which he is co-composer with his wife, singer Anne Phillips. During the 90s, Kindred appeared at many prestigious venues both in the USA and overseas, including among the former the Topeka Jazz Festival, the Colorado Springs Jazz Party, Carnegie Hall, in a tribute to the Nicholas Brothers, and the Fairbanks Arts Festival at which he conducted clinics for jazz woodwinds and performed as soloist with the symphony orchestra. In 2001, Kindred recorded two well-received albums with Little Jimmy Scott, Over The Rainbow and But Beautiful, and in the same year a duo set with Larry Willis for Mapleshade Records. In addition to performing, Kindred is also active in jazz education as a clinician and has worked with the International Art Of Jazz, Festival Jazz and the Smithsonian Jazz Repertory Company. Although much reference has been made to other tenor saxophonists in reviews of Kindred s work, his greatest quality is that while he might evoke occasional thoughts of these other players, he is at all times his own man, original, commanding and eloquent. Like Spike Robinson, whose late flowering was a thing of beauty, in the early years of the twenty-first century Kindred was attaining that same level of creative and popular success. That this recognition should not have happened until the mature years of his career is jazz s loss but for all its tardiness, it is certainly very well deserved.

Every orchestra has a characteristic sound & personality that identifies them through the ages, & in the case of the Boston Symphony Orchestra it is their contoured string & wind elegance, panache & suavity that marks them out as the premier Francophone American orchestra. With Seiji Ozawa at the helm, a conductor much identified with French repertoire, these Quad recordings of Maurice Ravel, accomplished during his long tenure as music director, are afforded the sonic treatment they deserve & are now able to receive given the latest SACD technology employed by Pentatone enabling the release of the full spectrum of sound captured by a previous eras sound engineers.

For classical connoisseurs, multichannel recording is state-of-the-art reproduction, and they regularly seek out the finest recordings in the super audio format. Among those discs are some important discoveries from the past, including rare quadraphonic recordings from the 1970s that are being remastered for the new technology. Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra made these quadraphonic recordings of orchestral works by Maurice Ravel in 1974, and they were remastered in 2014 by PentaTone as part of an ongoing project to preserve these early experiments in multichannel sound. Ozawa had a magical touch with Ravel, and his performances with the BSO of Le tombeau de Couperin, Menuet antique, Ma mère l’oye, Valses nobles et sentimentales, and Une barque sur l’océan are among the most transparent interpretations of the period. What quadraphonic recording added were exceptional depth, crisp details, and ideal separation of the parts, so the brilliant solo and sectional writing in Ravel’s scores stood out with the clarity and presence of chamber music. This hybrid SACD can be played on SACD players and conventional CD equipment with stereo playback, but even with that limitation, the spatial dimensions of the orchestra come across with astonishing verisimilitude. Highly recommended as a sonic showcase of the highest quality.

Baby I’m-a Want You is the fourth album by Bread, released in 1972. Its singles included the title cut (which reached #3 on the Billboard Top 100), “Everything I Own” (#5), “Mother Freedom” (#37), and “Diary” (#15). This was the first Bread album to feature keyboards player Larry Knechtel.

Baby I’m-A Want You is Bread’s best album, showcasing its soft and hard sides (yes, Bread had a hard side) at their respective peaks. “Mother Freedom”, with its crunchy James Griffin guitar solo, and the superb soft rocker “Baby I’m-A Want You” made a brilliant opening which the rest of the album had a hard time matching. The songs range from wistful sentimentality (“Diary”) to spirited protest (“This Isn’t What the Government,” a poor man’s “Taxman” with an anti-war slant). The high points outnumber the flat spots, and the playing is very polished (with unexpected hard rock flourishes on “Dream Lady”), but this is still a ’70s period piece.

The Best of Bread, is the single-disc collection of Bread’s hits, spanning 12 tracks, including lesser-known hits that didn’t reach the heights of “Make It With You”, “Everything I Own”, “If”, or “Baby I’m a Want You”. Though this isn’t as comprehensive as Rhino’s previous double-disc set – which means it doesn’t contain the David Gates solo cuts that the first one does – it still provides most casual listeners with all the Bread they’d need, in a highly listenable fashion, too.

The full title of this disc is “The Essence of Viennese Music – opera, operetta and dance..”. Rather cumbersome, but a fair description of the contents. It is played by an orchestra from Linz, Austria’s third city, with a conductor (Peter Guth) who specialises in music of Johann Strauss II and a pair of excellent young soloists in soprano Edith Lienbacher and tenor Herbert Lippert. While its programme contains many of the expected Viennese lollipops, it goes beyond the merely predictable, and the producers have come up with a diverse and very entertaining concert.

It opens with the younger Strauss’ Polka schnell ‘Thunder and lightning’, given a lively and bracing performance, particularly from the percussion, who are spread along the back of the auditorium. A duet from Strauss’ Vienna Blood follows (Das eine kann ich nicht verzeih’n), performed by the fresh-voiced soloists with a fine sense of style and lilt, aided by their excellent diction and characterful woodwind support; their music duet seductively into what we know as the Waltz ‘Vienna Blood’. The balance is rather odd here, though; distractingly the voices sing at one another from either side of the wide stage instead of interacting while standing close together as one would normally expect.

The everlasting subject matters of the stage drama are, to name a few: differences of cultures, the struggle between good and evil, and of course love, jealousy and intrigue. The Viennese Operetta centers on these themes, primarily on the tension in relations between the aristocracy and commoners. Strauss playfully demonstrates this in his comedies of errors and royal festivities; Lehár on the other hand tends to stay close to the drama and tragedy between the wealthy and poor, at times even with a renunciation of love; as for Kálmán, his works are full of ebullient vitality in a delirium of oblivion, set during the time when the monarchy perished, on the threshold of a new era. – Peter Guth

A set of songs written by jazz musicians were arranged for this project by pianist Carlos Franzetti for piano, sax, bass, flute, clarinet, and a string quartet. The results are pleasing if not overly memorable. While the selections are often challenging, the interpretations are more middle-of-the-road and fairly accessible due to the strings. Franzetti and saxophonist Lawrence Feldman take most of the solos and their improvisations are excellent, although the utilization of strings and woodwinds smoothes over some of the rough edges of the compositions, making the results fairly safe if occasionally unpredictable.

The Hamilton Music Award winner Chantal Chamberland releases her ‘Best of’ compilation album, Autobiography. Her trademark smoky, sultry jazz vocal is perfectly expressed in a wonderful diversity of genres, moving from sultry and soulful to bluesy and brassy with graceful ease. Her previous success with Soire´e cements her role as one of the finest female interpreters of jazz today. The compilation features tracks La Mer, Besame Mucho, Hit The Road Jack, Fever, You Are My Hero and more together with an all-new recording, Chantal’s take on Ed Sheeran’s heart-warming hit, Thinking Out Loud, performed with touch of tender affection and charm.

Chantal Chamberland has already released six albums and is well-known in Canada and Asia. The present volume is compilation, it seems, of tracks from those releases. If you examine the track listing you’ll get an idea of her style, but only an idea. “Feeling Good”, “Crazy” and “Fever” point to the stock middle of the road jazz canon that she seems to favor but it’s her treatment of these that catches the ear. Her voice is calm and moody, rarely being raised beyond a smooth crooning level, but in a manner that is highly intimate, personal and present. Instrumentation is relatively sparse, guitar (which she plays well), bass, drums, piano, with the occasional sax or horn, but the backings are loose, natural and embody the idea of accompaniment rather than competition with the singer. Production values here emphasize a late night club-date atmosphere, a singer, small band, and songs designed to make you relax rather than dance.

Over the last half-decade, The Pineapple Thief – led by musical polymath Bruce Soord and bolstered by the involvement of master drummer Gavin Harrison – has rapidly ascended to the upper echelons of Europe’s Alternative Rock scene.

Versions Of The Truth through Kscope – is the latest instalment in the band’s deserved (and welcome) rise to success. With the release of their new album, The Pineapple Thief raise its exceptional standards once more, having produced what may be one of the most important albums of 2020.

Versions Of The Truth represents a conceptual progression from Dissolution (a contemplation on our ‘post truth’ world) and lyrically tackles similar themes, but from a more personal perspective. Reflecting on how there can be more than one ‘version of the truth’, the album’s songs revolve around the impact the media can have on our lives and the people we love.

At the time of his death earlier this year, Phil May was hugely excited about the impending release of the first-ever, all-acoustic Pretty Things album, which had recently been completed.

The words below were written on the 5th May, just nine days before Phil died. We have left them unchanged as they remain relevant to the album and particularly to Phil and his connection to it. Even at this stage in his career, Phil was enthusiastically looking forward to performing these dark songs live and showcasing fresh on-stage approaches.

Unfortunately, the songs will never be heard live with Phil’s voice, but that doesn’t diminish the power of this remarkable record which stands as a touching tribute to one of the most significant artists of a rightly celebrated generation (and beyond).

THE PRETTY THINGS – BARE AS BONE, BRIGHT AS BLOOD – THE NEW ALBUM

On December 13th, 2018, following a sold-out show at London’s O2 Indigo, The Pretty Things retired from live, electric performances, after 55 years of touring and recording, due to the ill-health of lead singer, Phil May.

This was not something that the band, or their fans, wanted, but it was unavoidable. At the time, there was already a new, electric album well underway, but this was shelved as it was clear that the band would never be able to perform any of these recordings in a live setting.

At the time of the retirement, some sort of return in a stripped-down acoustic format was not entirely discounted, but – due to Phil May’s health issues and Dick Taylor’s lack of appetite for acoustic performance as a sole representation for the band’s work – nor was it expected.

However, during 2019 there was a significant sea change in attitude within the band and, early in the year, the band, together with manager and producer, Mark St. John, returned to the studio and took the first, tentative steps toward the making of a new album, this time in an entirely acoustic format. The album – now completed and entitled ‘Bare As Bone, Bright As Blood’ – is a genuine first for a band that has been knocking down the walls with their aggressive and memorable, electric live performances for more than 55 years.

This record has little in common with The Pretty Things past work, save for the fact that it is wholly unique and an absolute first. Arguably, this record is as ground-breaking as the band’s seminal psychedelic masterpiece ‘S. F. Sorrow’, which is acknowledged as the first Rock Opera. In some ways, due to the stripped-down nature of the album, the levels of inspiration, imagination, originality, and musicality on display are at an equivalent high. For the band’s two principal members this was an arduous and unfamiliar task, relying solely on their fundamental talents and undertaken without the comfort and benefit of the thundering band approach that had underpinned The Pretty Things’ work for so many years.

This is work stripped bare and reflects the frailties and insecurities of gathering age, ill health, painful failure & memorable success. It is a reflection on two long, long lives in art and music that have always been at the cutting edge.

‘Bare As Bone, Bright As Blood’ is the work of two old men who are acting their age, maybe for the first time ever. If their health and energy is depleted, their skill, insight and experience is not, with the result that they have made a remarkable, exciting, unexpected and thought-provoking record, that is, against all the odds, another singular “first” for an already ground-breaking band.

‘It was a very sad day when we said an enforced goodbye to the astounding electric band that was The Pretty Things in December 2018. It is a very happy day to see the band’s return as the old men they truly are, finally, comfortable to release the young men that, for such a long, long time, they were.” – Phil May

‘Bare as Bone, Bright as Blood’ is the remarkable and unexpected new album by The Pretty Things, who remain the tainted, dark Rock royalty they always were.

Rules are there to be broken. Genres are there to be blurred. Perhaps you thought The Ragtime Rumours could never top the fearless alchemy of 2018’s debut Rag ’N Roll – a rebellious collision of vintage blues, offbeat rock ‘n’ roll, gypsy-jazz and quirky storytelling. But with this year’s Abandon Ship, you’ll be happily proved wrong. “In our opinion,” say the band, “Rag ’N Roll was the appetiser and Abandon Ship is the main course.”

Amongst the five-star reviews for Rag ’N Roll, there was one recurring complaint from the purists (“We often hear that ‘this isn’t real blues’”). But for a band this open-minded – with influences spanning from Robert Johnson and Tom Waits to Pokey LaFarge and Django Reinhardt – that criticism was practically a badge of honour. And while Abandon Ship was tracked at Kink Studio and Dog Licks Recording in the Netherlands, it’s a pleasure to find yourself back in The Ragtime Rumours’ idiosyncratic world.

Lose yourself in a lyrical landscape of dancing girls, moonshine and Cadillac salesmen, and dive into a production where anything goes. “We experimented a lot with sound,” remember the lineup. “After a million changes, this album became exactly how it was meant to be.”

Blues purists be damned. Abandon Ship is music without limits, for listeners without blinkers. “We think rules are meant to be broken,” say the band. “And we love breaking the rules…”

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Rhino – Warner Records

Originally released in 1987, Pleased To Meet Me is the fifth studio album from The Replacements. Formed in Minneapolis in 1979, The Replacements initially started out as a punk rock band but grew to be one of the pioneers of alternative rock. Pleased To Meet Me is the onlyalbum from the band recorded as a trio after guitarist Bob Stinson’s exit after the release of their fourth studio album Tim, and before the addition of guitarist Bob ‘Slim’ Dunlap.

All things considered, Tim was an easy transition to the majors for the Replacements, at least as far as the making of the album goes: things went wrong after the release, as the band botched big showcases like its Saturday Night Live spot, leading up to the dismissal of Bob Stinson at the conclusion of the Tim tour. The dust hadn’t settled when the ‘Mats headed down to Memphis to record Pleased to Meet Me with producer Jim Dickinson at Ardent Studios – or to phrase it in Alex Chilton-speak, to record with Big Star’s 3rd producer at the studio where all three Big Star albums were made. All this fanboy worship perhaps naturally led to a full-blown mash note to Paul Westerberg’s idol, who also turned up to play a couple of licks on a finally finished “Can’t Hardly Wait,” which initially was attempted with Chilton as a producer before Tim, but Pleased to Meet Me didn’t resemble either the crystalline pop of #1 Record or the narcissistic black hole of 3rd. Dickinson gave the Replacements a full-blooded, muscular production, cranking up guitars, hauling out an upright bass for Tommy Stinson, and bringing in horns – even strings – to flesh out Westerberg’s songs. This was the Replacements as professionals and, ever the contrarians, they strained against it – albeit only sporadically and underneath the surface – with Westerberg’s outsider stance calcifying into the invigorating bitterness of “I.O.U.” and “I Don’t Know.” These two proto-slacker anti-anthems – quite the inverse of the call to arms of “Bastards of Young” and “Left of the Dial” – are the only times the group’s self-sabotage surfaces here, as the bandmembers pretty much give themselves over to Dickinson’s studio savvy, leading to the ominous pulse of “The Ledge” and the brilliant, shining power pop of “Never Mind,” “Alex Chilton,” and “Valentine,” along with such left-field twists as the mock jazz of “Nightclub Jitters.” This kind of colorful, almost cinematic production – even the greasy rocker “Shooting Dirty Pool” is enhanced by the sound of breaking glass – was unheard of on a Replacements record and it all came to a head on “Can’t Hardly Wait,” which was glossed over with swelling strings and the Memphis Horns. All these fancy accoutrements would seem like the antithesis of the Replacements’ spirit, but Dickinson’s grand production merely blows the ‘Mats up to epic scale, leaving their essence intact: Westerberg even gets a lovely fragile acoustic moment in “Skyway” and there are down-and-dirty rockers like “Shooting Dirty Pool” and “Red Red Wine” that feel like throwaways, but are necessary to the spirit of the record. The Replacements never sounded better with a bigger production than they did on Pleased to Meet Me, so it’s hard not to see it as the one that got away, the record that should have been the breakthrough, especially in the year when fellow American underground rockers R.E.M. leaped into the Top Ten (but, it’s also true that “The Ledge” may not have been the best single choice, as songs about suicides don’t often provide entry into the Top 40). Then again, the Replacements don’t make sense as a success story, so the failure of the gleaming, glistening Pleased to Meet Me winds up making its polish kind of heart-rending. As it turns out, this was the last time they could still shoot for the stars and seem like their scrappy selves and, in many ways, it was the last true Replacements album.

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS have released two new songs from their new double album, “Cyr”, due on November 27 via Sumerian Records. The 20-song follow-up to 2018’s “Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.” was produced by singer-songwriter Billy Corgan. Check out “Confessions Of A Dopamine Addict” and “Wrath” below.

“‘Cyr’ is dystopic folly,” Corgan said in a statement, “one soul against the world sort of stuff, set against a backdrop of shifting loyalties and sped up time. To me it stands as both hopeful and dismissive of what is and isn’t possible with faith.”

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS have also announced “In Ashes”, a five-part animated series written by Corgan, featuring new songs from “Cyr”. Episodes one and two — “As The Crow Flies” and “Inspirations, Aspirations” — will arrive on September 25.
