Like many important bands, Seattle quartet Versing got their start in college radio Tacoma’s KUPS. The group’s main songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Daniel Salas served as alternative music director there, where he met guitarist Graham Baker, drummer Max Keyes, and bassist Kirby Lochner. Now Versing are poised to spread their coolly combustible brand of rock on those said airwaves…and beyond if the world knows what’s good for it. Baker, Keyes, Lochner, and Salas have risen through Seattle’s competitive rock ecosphere with nonchalant élan. They cheekily titled a previous album Nirvana, but never mind the bleach: Versing isn’t emulating Sub Pop’s most famous artist. Rather, these four twentysomething aesthetes are forging an exciting sound that finds a golden mean between lustrous noise and ebullient melody. With Versing, songwriting is obviously crucial, but much of the pleasure in 10000 comes from its guitar textures. They’re swarming, yet also spiky and agile. Gently chiding the Seattle music scene’s self-seriousness while acknowledging Versing’s playfulness and irony, Salas says, ”There’s a ‘let’s just f**k around and see what comes out,’ aspect of what we do, which I think is uncommon for Seattle bands.” Versing’s freewheeling attitude has paradoxically resulted in 10000, an engrossing album that’s impossible to feel ambivalent about.

ALL is the first album to be recorded at Tiersen’s new studio, venue and community centre, The Eskal, built in an abandoned discotheque on the island of Ushant, a small island positioned in the Celtic sea between Brittany and Cornwall, Tiersen’s home for the past 10 years. The album, mixed and co-produced by Gareth Jones, continues the themes of environment and a connection to nature first explored on EUSA, incorporating recordings from outside of Brittany, such as the redwood forests of California as well as field recordings from Tempelhof airport in Berlin (on ‘Tempelhof’), plus guest vocalists.

Boccherini wrote very little vocal music; however he left two settings of the Stabat mater. It was first set in 1781 for solo soprano and strings and then in 1800 for two sopranos and tenor, obviously influenced by the hugely-popular Pergolesi Stabat mater of 1736. There are many similarities in the notation and harmony – even the same key of F minor is used. The writing is of extraordinary individuality and seems to come straight from the heart. This unjustly neglected piece is surely one of the most remarkable sacred compostions of the era.

Emanuele d’Astorga was one of the most colourful figures in early eighteenth-century music and his life has often been the subject of legend rather than fact (brief details of which can be discovered in Robert King’s illuminating booklet notes). During his life, Astorga was best known for his well-written and tuneful chamber cantatas (of which more than 150 survive) and his opera Dafni (only Act 1 now survives). But by far his most enduring work has proved to be this setting of the Stabat mater, his only surviving sacred composition. Throughout it we hear Astorga’s gift for writing warm melodies, typical of the Neapolitan style of the time, and how he captures the melancholy of this most desolate of sacred texts.

Husband and wife pianists Robin Holcomb and Wayne Horvitz team up with Vancouver quartet Talking Pictures on this album that defies easy categorization. As the title suggests, there’s a lesson of sorts being expounded. There’s certainly something archaic about it, almost as if these songs had already existed as prototypes in another time and place, a lost America of long ago. Yet this music is very much about now, a symbolic distillation of the present.

“… improvisations and investigations into the heart and soul of experimental jazz … the composer-singer-pianist takes journeys to carnival-like atmospheres and the natural world with equal aplomb.” – PopMatters.com

“… represents a fuller consolidation, coming closest to representing her varied musical interests. Lyrically, as ever, Holcomb’s messages, while strong, are delivered gently, without a big stick. Expansive and deeply resonant, but in the quietest fashion possible … perfectly melds Holcomb’s divergent interests, with a group of musicians who seem perfectly connected to her evocative world on an empathic, telepathic level.” – All About Jazz

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 39:34 minutes | 471 MB | Genre: Pop

Chip Tooth Smile is the upcoming fourth studio album by American singer Rob Thomas, scheduled to be released on April 26, 2019, through Atlantic Records. It is his first album in four years, following 2015’s The Great Unknown, and was preceded by the single “One Less Day (Dying Young)”, which reached the top 30 at adult contemporary radio in the United States. Thomas will tour North America in support of the album from May 2019.

The album is produced by Butch Walker and was shaped by Thomas’ 1980s influences as well as “the pop-rock songs for which he’s become so well-known.” Thomas stated that while making the album, he was doing so for his primarily for fans and not to necessarily draw in those who had not previously heard his music.

Rob Thomas opens up Chip Tooth Smile, his fourth solo album, by singing “I’m not afraid of getting older/I’m one less day from dying young.” It’s not a common sentiment for pop stars, but Rob Thomas isn’t a common pop star. Despite the slick reputation he acquired with “Smooth,” his blockbuster collaboration with Santana, Thomas has often been concerned with troubling concerns. His gift has been disguising these disquieting moments in a shiny package, usually produced by Matt Serletic. While Thomas continues on this path on Chip Tooth Smile, he parts ways with Serletic for the first time in his 20-year career, opting to work with Butch Walker instead. The change in collaborators does give Thomas a bit of boost, even if it doesn’t quite mark a shift in direction. Chip Tooth Smile is filled with stirring power ballads and rousing anthems, songs where Thomas reckons with the worst in him and finds solace in lasting love. With Walker, Thomas relies on bolder colors than he has in the recent past, but there’s also an acceptance of the singer/songwriter’s middle age; he’s not expanding his worldview so much as refining it, attempting to articulate as cleanly and clearly as possible. To that end, Chip Tooth Smile won’t win any new fans, but it feels as complete a portrait of Thomas’ intent and gifts as possible: his openheartedness is as direct and forceful as the arena-filling anthems they accompany. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Five years since their last album, Mexican acoustic rock guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela are ready to embark on the next chapter of their remarkable story, with the release of the most ambitious music of their twenty year career together. Entitled ‘Mettavolution’, the new album brings together Rod and Gab’s passionate interest in Buddhism, the history of human evolution and the liberation of the potential we have as a species; all expressed through the medium of two acoustic guitars.A white-hot side one that acknowledges the duo’s thrash-metal roots back in Mexico City gives way to an incredible new arrangement of Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’, inspiringly reimagined for two acoustic guitars, which takes up the whole of the second half of ‘Mettavolution’. Long-time Floyd fans (the title track of 2009’s ’11:11′ album was dedicated to the band) Rodrigo y Gabriela lovingly pay homage to the ‘Meddle’ era prog-classic, while at the same time weaving their own golden threads into its timeless textures, to create something exciting, contemporary and unforgettable.Recorded in Los Angeles with noted producer Dave Sardy, best-known for his work with Oasis, LCD Soundsystem, A Perfect Circle and Fall Out Boy, ‘Mettavolution’ is Rodrigo y Gabriela reborn, reaching for a higher state of consciousness, pushing themselves as writers, interpreters and players, and challenging us the listener to absorb, engage and respond to them.

Six buildings in close proximity with families living one on top of another within a constant melee of sound, including music of all sorts. This is the public housing of Santiago de Cuba, known locally as cuartería. These apartments and their confederation of people and sounds serve as the inspiration to saxophonist and composer Román Filiú’s new musical suite and subsequent recording, Quarteria.

Growing up in the far eastern province of Cuba, Filiú was aware of music all around him. His father was a music theory teacher who encouraged his son to explore classical music scores. Filiú’s own musical studies began with classical piano before he focused on the saxophone. While visiting his friends who lived in the local cuartería, the budding musician was exposed to a wide variety of sounds of Cuban extraction, including liturgical music for Bembé, conga oriental, tumba francesa, classical, jazz, and popular music, the cuartería was Filiú’s own musical Tower of Babel.

Filiú left Santiago de Cuba some time ago. He continued his studies in Camagüey and at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. He lived and played locally in Havana, including a stint in jazz super group Irakere, before he moved to Madrid, where he lived for seven years. Filiú has been in New York since 2011 and has made his mark on the jazz scene as a bandleader, composer, instrumentalist and collaborator of note, playing alongside well-known musicians like Henry Threadgill, Steve Coleman and Dafnis Prieto.

Upon receiving a commissioning and residency grant from The Jazz Gallery of New York City, Filiú was able to compose his Quarteria. His goal was to create a suite of music that involved an eclectic range of musical styles performed by a diverse group of musicians. In composing, Filiú utilized a number of methods, including writing by transcribing piano improvisations, playing his saxophone, singing the melody or even without the influence of an instrument, putting his thoughts straight to paper. Through the entire process, Filiú made sure that the pieces served improvisation.

The ensemble grew out of Filiú’s intention to have as full a sound as possible with as compact an assemblage as he could muster. The ensemble ended up as a septet with an additional horn on two pieces, all members being brilliant stylists and improvisers well-versed in a variety of musical traditions.

Trumpeter Ralph Alessi has been a frequent collaborator with Filiú in Dafnis Prieto’s band, the two having originally met while the trumpeter traveled with Steve Coleman to Havana. Dayna Stephens’ s sonorous tenor saxophone is a perfect foil for Filiú’s alto. Also from Santiago de Cuba, pianist David Virelles has been a long time collaborator and is responsible here for widening the ensemble’s panoramic sound. Bassist Matt Brewer was a must for his steady rhythm and expert time, while drummer Craig Weinrib is equally adept in support and widely steeped in rhythmic traditions from all over the world.

The suite begins with the staggering “Fulcanelli,” the piece inspired by its namesake’s study of the sacred geometry of cathedrals and which utilizes symmetry within its compositional makeup. Olivier Messiaen’s compositional style informed “Grass,” which was written away from the piano and utilizes expanded voicings between the three horns and the piano. The title of “Harina Con Arena” refers to the period of Russian withdrawal from Cuba in the 1990s and the food crisis that followed where there developed a common practice of adding sand to the cornmeal sold to the population. The piece is meant to have the jilting feeling of biting into that unexpected texture.

Utilizing hints from his choir director brother, Filiú wrote the beautiful “Choral” with formal voice leading, lending to the shifting harmonies within the instruments. On his week long Jazz Gallery residency at the Pocantico Center in Tarrytown, New York, Filiú composed three danzas at the piano: the improvised “Danza #5,” the Messiaen influenced “Danza #1,” and “Danza #3,” which was inspired by the rhythms of his childhood neighborhood comparsa ensemble, San Pedrito. The wonderfully disjointed “Glass” uses one melody, which is delayed a half beat between the parts, creating a unique counterpoint.

The stately “Imperator” mirrors the walk of an old Haitian refugee who lived near Filiú’s childhood home and who used to help the young saxophonist carry his horn home from school. Saxophonist Maria Grand appears on “For Horns and Bells,” which is a chorale and an experiment in conduction and voice leading. The final two pieces came from an idea to create crazy names and then write music for them. “Tursten” is a mysteriously laconic piece, while “Kaijufrem” is aggressive and utilizes a compositional system devised by Filiú in which he assigns a note to each letter of the name but then allows the structure to mutate from there.

The metaphor of a large edifice with people from of all walks of life comingling with the soundtrack of the music of Cuba is fitting for Roman Filiú’s Quarteria, which is an exceptional example of a lifetime’s exposure and dedication to the study of music in all its forms, coalescing into a moving musical experience.

Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Captured Tracks

Portland band Reptaliens’ 2017 debut album, FM-2030, found its inspirations in a fascination with aliens, cults, and Philip K. Dick sci-fi novels, but those themes were hard to make out beneath their waves of friendly, uber-chill indie pop. Sounding somewhere between the breathy isolation of Broadcast and the chorus-doused lo-fi pop of Mac DeMarco, TOPS, Crumb, or any other number of easygoing melodians, Reptaliens’ science fiction leanings were more apparent in their high-concept stage shows than on album. Second record Valis tends more towards an internal world than extraterrestrial curiosity, but the band maintains their relaxed, vaporous sound. Vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Bambi Browning commands the tunes with a soft but powerful delivery and the rest of the band fills out the arrangements with easy, drifting strums, sophisti-pop rhythms, and the occasional tasteful synth bleeping. The entire mix was run through a department-store karaoke machine, adding another layer of hazy dreaminess to the songs. Lyrics explore longing and devotion, with standouts like the synth-heavy “Shuggie II” and “Echo Park” offering hooks that are somewhat buried in the overarching sleepy vibe but peek out just enough to make the songs memorable. The tame tape-echo experimentation on “Song for Moon” hints at a more adventurous production approach but never pushes outside of Reptaliens’ comfort zone. The majority of Valis is so uniform in tempo, energy level, and arrangement that it becomes more of an atmosphere than an engaging listening experience. While always pleasant and friendly, the band borders on sounding anonymous at times. In its best moments, Valis perfects the band’s warped melancholic guitar pop, but its weaker tracks blend together into one long, tepid breeze. ~ Fred Thomas

Studio Master, Official Digital Download |Front Cover | © Anti – Epitaph

The second half of the Arcade Fire singer/songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist’s ambitious Quiet River of Dust project, That Side of the River takes a step back from the mercurial, worldbeat-tinged psych-pop of its predecessor in favor of a more measured and linear ambient-folk approach. Released to coincide with the summer solstice — the previous volume arrived via the autumn equinox — the ten-track set is both meditative and quietly dramatic. Anchored by Parry’s cosmic musings, monastic melodies, and even-keeled voice, songs like “Lost in the Waves,” “Cups in the Ocean,” and “Throw a Cup of Water” — this is a wet record — are as ASMR friendly as they are heady. Parry keeps the progressive rock vibe that he established on Volume One going strong throughout the LP’s just-under-45-minute runtime, though things tend to hew closer to the bucolic (early King Crimson and Yes) end of the spectrum. His predilection towards pairing indie pop-kissed Albion folk with traditional Japanese music is less apparent this time around, with soft piano and shimmering electronics providing the bulk of the sonic architecture. In opting for a ruminative approach, Parry has crafted more of a guided meditation than a cosmopolitan fun house, resulting in a collection of songs that often feel less tangible than those that populated its antecedent. Still, it’s an ambitious work that is undeniably widescreen, but far removed from the grandiose chamber rock of his meal-ticket band. It celebrates family, self, friendship, and the existential pain and wonder of life. It seeks rather than spells things out, and in doing so manages to feel equally rooted in the past, present, and future. ~ James Christopher Monger

The chorus to the title track here rather lends itself to reverie. “This is the sound of remembering” sings Ryan Hamilton on the first record from his Harlequin Ghosts. So, forgive the trip down memory lane, but reason number 2134 why music was better when I was a kid, is this.

On a Wednesday, Kerrang would come out and me and my mate, we’d pour over the reviews. We’d pick out stuff that we’d save our money for based on what was said and who said it (if it was Morat, Dave Ling, Ray Zell, Malcolm Dome, Mick Wall, or Steve Beebee, we were especially keen).

One day, there was a review of a single called “Golden Skin” by Silver Sun that caught my eye. The following Saturday, I was in Tempest Records in Birmingham, buying the two versions of it.

2019 release. Sacred Paws have a natural inclination not to take things too seriously. You can hear it all the way through a conversation with it’s two members, guitarist Rachel Aggs and drummer Eilidh Rodgers, punctuated by rolls of giggles and thoughtful pauses, and you can hear it in the light touch they bring to their music, a jangly blend of indie pop full of fizzing world rhythms and bright horns. Run Around the Sun brims with upbeat reflections on growing up and looking back. Shimmering guitar riffs dance between snappy beats and swooning melodies that will have crowds committing to far more than a simple head-bob.

The album, which was composed in the remote valleys of Wales solely by Rebecca Rose Harris and Franklin Mockett, offers ruminations’ of solitude in the isolation of nature.
