FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 57:49 minutes | 1,06 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Universal Music Distribution Deal

“Loco Cello” is an ambitious musical adventure that forges close ties between classical music, jazz, and world music. Four musicians breathe together and reinvent the notion of string quartet by combining two guitars, a cello, and a double bass, around a melodic and swing air chamber music. A quartet composed of two duets, one rather classic, which combines the guitarist Samuel Strouk with the cellist François Salque. The other duet, between guitarist Adrien Moignard and bassist Jérémie Arranger, is much more jazz and swing. Loco Cello is a string quartet of modern times, an atypical quartet of chamber, where emotion, complicity and virtuosity go hand in hand. An organic music, alive and moving, where tenderness rubs tension expressing a feeling tinged with both joy and urgency. It is a unique musical approach, where the classic rubato is tinged with rhythmic swing, and where the musical boundaries are abolished through a colorful, contrasted and sensual palette, served by a singular and particularly pregnant group sound.

Burning Love is written for survival. The album is about burning desires and notions of great love that make us blind to red flags and black holes. Love can be warm, flaming and safe, but it can also destroy indiscriminately or be ignited by passion, either with the ability to create great open wounds. Burning Love is about clearing all the traces of the destruction and rising like a phoenix from the ashes.

Also, the fifth album of the three Swedes is again an interruptus: As soon as you get involved in the sound of the Scandinavians and want to be entertained continue to entertain, it is already over: ten songs in half an hour. Like Kiss in the 70s, the trio does not make prisoners, but with a self-irony that would never have crossed the masked Americans. Already the name is program: STAH are pop, in terms of melodies, rock in terms of arrangements and avant-garde in their lyrics. It’s weird, but also catchy, straight and dodgy at the same time. It’s fun without going too deep. A bubblegum album, which is definitely entertaining live.

It seems like it was just yesterday that Scone Cash Players delivered their debut LP, “Blast Furnace” to the people and unexpectedly their follow up to one of my favorite albums of the year arrives at the door insisting that I immediately remove the shrink wrap and drop the needle down. With that said, Scone Cash Players have recorded another tight slice of grooves that elevates their sound from the previous effort and shows that they’re definitely going in the right direction. Organ funk, grit, deep grooves and plenty of soul is what you’re going to get on “As The Screw Turns”, a knockout 10 tracker long player of instrumental tunes as well as a few vocal cuts mixed in. For this album, they’ve enlisted a star studded cast to join including legend Naomi Shelton, Jason Joshua and John Dokes.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 49:12 minutes | 531 MB | Genre: Alternative Rock, Acoustic
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Anti – Epitaph

Singer and songwriter Sean Rowe is possessed of a truly singular voice. On Magic, his Anti debut in 2011, it seemed to rumble straight up from the depths of the earth to shake the listener’s ground. Though the stark guitar and voice production were a bit rigid, Rowe’s songs, even when a tad clumsy, carried within them a singular vision of the natural world and an experiential poetry that was easily communicated to listeners through that powerful voice. The Salesman and the Shark stands in contrast to its predecessor. Produced by Woody Jackson, Rowe is backed by a band on most tracks, as well as various backing singers (who include Petra Haden and Isobel Campbell), and an occasional string section (Octetto Magnifico). The supporting cast is warranted; Rowe’s grown immensely as a writer. His melodies are tighter, his lyrics and cadences sharper. Likewise, that voice, which seemed already perfect, is even more disciplined and expressive. Opener “Bring Back the Night” is a waltz ushered in by a halting electric guitar, a skeletal piano, and a simple bassline. Rowe gets through the first verse about broken love then delivers the killer couplet the tune turns on: “The jungle has built its own plans/And I was born obsolete, though I’m not an innocent man….” His voice digs inside those words as if they were from his marrow. A backing chorus joins him, sliding in from the margins and carrying it to the heavens as a prayer. On “Elsewhere,” the band shimmers in the backdrop; they give his vocals free rein on top, bringing the tune’s simple melody and weighty lyrics to the listener like a shot. Inara George duets on “The Wall,” introduced by the strings with restrained dissonance. They create a sense off quiet drama before Rowe calms them as he begins to relate a broken love song; George plaintively answers him from the other side of the divide. “Horses” is one of two rock songs here with its driving organic percussion, hyperactive strings, and kinetic acoustic guitars. The other is “Downwind,” which successfully employs surf music to further its ends. In terms of production there are a few songs here that rely too much on Tom Waits (“Joe’s Cult”) and Leonard Cohen (“The Lonely Maze”). That said, they don’t feel like missteps because Rowe actually possesses the chops to deliver the songs, which are strong regardless. The Salesman and the Shark is head and shoulders above the work of most of Rowe’s peers, and he possesses a strong identity as a songwriter, even if he doesn’t feel confident completely relying on it yet.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 52:21 minutes | 992 MB | Genre: Jazz

Our light shines brightest in the darkness and things in life don’t always turn out the way that we have planned. It is with these maxims in mind that the brilliant pianist and composer Shamie Royston presents her new recording, Beautiful Liar. Her second release is a testament to perseverance and the proposition that learning from mistakes will help in the pursuit of goals and subsequent triumphs. Though the path might not have always been an easy one, Royston’s light is luminous and her music has served her in establishing herself as a leading voice in the jazz world. Originally from Denver, Colorado, Royston has been an integral part of the New York jazz scene as a performer and educator. Her contributions as a pianist can be heard alongside celebrated leaders like Tia Fuller, Ralph Peterson, Sean Jones and Terri Lyne Carrington.

On Beautiful Liar, the core sound is that of the piano trio, embellished by one or two horns for different sonic possibilities. Drummer Rudy Royston provides a strong rhythmic foundation and centric fire when paired up with bassist Yasushi Nakamura, whose strong bass presence is essential to the leader’s compositions.

Royston expands the ensemble on a number of pieces, exploring possibilities of a quartet and of a quintet. The melodic approach of saxophonist Jaleel Shaw serves as a perfect voice for Royston’s compositions. Royston also adds trumpet player Josh Evans, who ignites a sound of juxtaposing harmonies into Beautiful Liar. This recording focuses on the piano trio as a lead voice, while the horns’ roles are reminiscent of background singers and soloists, for a few of the compositions.

The pieces present on Beautiful Liar are all original compositions, except the great “A Lovely Day,” which was made famous by Bill Withers. Furthermore, every original composition represents trials and tribulations of life, reflecting Royston’s life journey and personal development.

The program begins with the ruminative “Sunday Nostalgia,” one of Royston’s oldest tunes but one that sets a scene with a sense of peace. The effervescent “Push” is about pushing through adversity and the emotions of that struggle. The title track, “Beautiful Liar,” relates to objects, images, ideas or people not being as good for us as we think they are. Initially, there is a simple, moving melody that soon becomes disrupted with a vigorous rhythm. The lilting “Precious Lullaby” is a beautiful theme written in ¾ and is a tribute to Royston’s two children, for whom she would invent lullabies at bedtime when they were younger.

The fantastically swinging “Dissimulate” is about concealing one’s true character, which is illustrated by the melody being played by one voice and then recreated by a second voice, the interweaving lines of sax and trumpet only coming together at the end, moving from chaos to a united resolution. She chose to add Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day” because it represents times of happiness and hope. This particular arrangement features the horns as background singers. “Circulo Vicioso” represents a sequence of reciprocal cause and effect in which two or more elements intensify and aggravate one another, leading to a worsening of a situation. The song is musically constructed around a circular melodic pattern intertwined with Afro-Cuban rhythms.

A personal favorite, “Uplifted Heart,” comes from a poignant melody Royston created that gives a feeling of happiness and peacefulness in the world. “A Tangled Web We Weave” describes a complex or difficult situation that one creates out of deceit. The piece begins with the trio before adding Shaw’s soprano sax. Both piano and sax melodies intertwine as the music continues to grow. The recording concludes with a solo piano take of “Precious Lullaby,” a moment of reflection and calm.

Beautiful Liar is a luminous portrayal of the full spectrum of life’s possibilities. Shamie Royston explores the full breadth of her experience and inspiration from the good, the bad and the obscure, to create a lovely recording. In essence, her message is that the key to life’s fulfillment is showering oneself with passion, positivity and promise.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 57:57 minutes | 679 MB | Genre: Pop, Rock, Singer-Songwriter
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Needle Mythology

Stephen Duffy’s 1996 solo album I Love My Friends available for the first time ever on vinyl and vinyl replica CD. Following a time of personal upheaval, the album was the result of an unprecedented creativity for Stephen. “The tunes and the words were coming faster than I could write them down. That’s the dichotomy of I Love My Friends. My interior world was falling apart, but creatively it was a charmed existence.” Strictly speaking, this version of I Love My Friends isn’t a reissue. On delivering the album to his label Indolent, Stephen was asked to record two more songs for putative single release. Produced by Andy Partridge, these songs necessitated the last-minute removal of two songs which have since passed into fan lore as two of Stephen’s all-time best: Mao Badge and In The Evening Of Her Day. This release of I Love My Friends restores these songs to the record, honouring Stephen’s original vision for the album. The two Andy Partridge-produced songs You Are and What If I Fell In Love With You? will be available on a seven-inch single which comes with all vinyl copies of I Love My Friends. They are added as bonus tracks to disc one of the CD version. In a 2015 appreciation of Stephen’s career, The Guardian singled out I Love My Friends as a high watermark: “Charming, touching and at times profoundly upsetting, it was a memoir of young loves and naive pop dreams that descended into raw tragedy on The Postcard, in which Duffy comes across a forgotten photograph of himself with a girlfriend who’d since died, and mourns her afresh. Heart-stopping stuff.” In 2003, The Sunday Times wrote “Duffy is creating a body of lyrically lacerating work that should win him gold discs rather than indifference.” While the 2019 vinyl release of I Love My Friends comes with a seven-inch containing the Partridge songs, the expanded 2019 CD release of I Love My Friends comes with an entire bonus disc of songs titled Blown Away – Selected Demos Volume 1.

Any chance that one has to hear a master musician in his or her preferred setting is a gift. For all the one-offs and ensemble by committee type of gigs that spring up, it is the reunion with familiar collaborators for a stint of a few nights that really becomes integral for the best performances. On his new recording, At This Time, pianist Steve Kuhn found himself just in the right time and place to record a trio record that feels timeless and truly inspired. The ensemble, which features legendary bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Joey Baron, was happy to find itself in an extended engagement at Birdland Jazz Club in New York in September 2015 and found time to get into the recording studio before heading to Europe on tour.

Of course, Kuhn has been one of jazz s foremost pianists for over half a century. He has been fortunate to accompany some of the most important voices of his generation, including John Coltrane, Sheila Jordan and Kenny Dorham, but it is his work in the trio setting that has been where he has made his name.

Kuhn s current trio features a contemporary, and an important innovator of a later generation. Steve Swallow has been at the forefront of contemporary music for decades. Whether performing alongside Jimmy Giuffre, Paul Bley or Carla Bley, Swallow has been one of the most important figures on both the acoustic and electric bass. Though twenty years younger than Kuhn and Swallow, drummer Joey Baron has cemented himself as one of the most well rounded musicians, at home in the most classic of jazz ensembles and in the most raucous of the avant-garde.

Stevie Wonder’s debut album, released when he was 11, is still an amazing musical document, showcasing his skills as a percussionist (drums and bongos), chromatic harmonica player, keyboardist (piano and organ), and composer – and he was prodigious in all four categories. All of these skills are highlighted throughout this record, and Wonder’s youthful, exuberant voice had a maturity suggesting that greatness was around the corner. Perhaps most surprising to contemporary listeners will be the emphasis on instrumentals, which made this a fairly unusual album by Motown standards to begin with. Apart from a few shouts in the background in some of the more free-form tracks, there’s not a vocal to be heard here, yet the sounds are rich and diverse enough that one never misses them. What’s more, a lot of what’s here is extremely sophisticated instrumental music for its time, and the “jazz” reference in the title is not a matter of optimistic convenience or self-aggrandizement – a lot of this is legitimate jazz.

“This is my life in Songs. Some of them reconstructed, some of them refitted, some of them reframed, and all of them with a contemporary focus.” That is the description of Sting’s latest record, making this more than just a collection of his biggest hits (either solo or with The Police). It was a particular kind of rhythm that he wanted to work in, so as to eliminate the ‘dated’ feel to some of his songs (according to Sting himself). More striking than the original, the drums of Demolition Man, If You Love Someone Set Them Free, Desert Rose and even Englishman in New York will take listeners by surprise. Regarding this famous tribute to gay icon Quentin Crisp, the song released in 1988 is seasoned by pizzicatos and a soprano sax solo.

As for the other ballads, it’s more in the singer’s texture and vocal prowess that the reinvention is most noticeable. Less pure but more structured than before, Sting’s voice carries a new dimension in Fields of Gold and Fragile, two songs that also prove that the Englishman’s talent as a melodist has not aged a bit. The same goes for tracks taken from his Police years too, in particular Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon, as well as the ubiquitous Roxanne (presented here as a live version). – Nicolas Magenham

After one album that was stuck in the ’80s and one that tipped too far in the direction of slick radio pop, Summer Camp’s third album, and first to be self-produced, shows the band finally starting to forge some kind of unique identity. Bad Love starts off with a four-song segment that downplays their love of ’80s pop, adds some ’90s grit, and has a tougher, more exciting sound, bringing in fuzzy shoegaze guitars, punchy tempos, and impassioned vocals. It’s a bracing start and at least one of the songs, the opening “Bad Love,” sounds like a sure-fire hit single. The others get the arrangements just right and have cute little bits that stand out like shards of glass on a sidewalk; the vocal counterpoint between Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley on the dramatic “Beautiful” and the keening guitar lead on “Sleepwalking” are two fine examples. They sound like a totally revitalized group, brushing away the gauzy haze of previous efforts with a forceful wave of their hands. Unfortunately, they can’t quite keep it up and the record gets a little soft around the middle. The loping “Horizon” is some fluffy singer/songwriter pop that would be good for a Voice audition; “Run Away” is glossy, HAIM-lite balladry that’s so slight it barely registers; and “Angela” is drippy soft rock that’s bland and forgettable. This sudden lurch into over-produced, undercooked pop is a shock and a shame. The nostalgic “Drive Past Your House” isn’t half bad though, and suddenly some hope creeps in that maybe the ship will right itself. Amazingly, it does! “If You Hate Me” provides a boost of energy, with Sankey pushing her vocals past her usual sweetness into something more urgent and Warmsley’s guitars diving back into shoegaze territory. “Keep Up” displays some fine urgency too, with the tempo positively jumping, the hooks slashing, and the words tumbling out in a welcome rush of emotion. Here’s the thing though. Between these two great songs, they manage to squeeze in the album’s worst song by far. The gratingly sappy “Everlasting” aims to be a big ’80s ballad that comes complete with gated tom-toms, programmed tambourine hits, and oversaturated, syrupy backing vocals. That three-song section is the album in a nutshell. It’s half the work of a band looking for new way to move ahead, half the work of a band giving in to the overdone, mannered mistakes that made its previous album so spotty. The most frustrating aspect of the record is that they are obviously trying hard to find their own sound and they almost get there. Certainly on “Bad Love” they do; a few other times as well. Maybe next time they’ll figure it out. Until then, a little careful curating and the listener should be able to make a pretty great EP out of this almost-there album. ~ Tim Sendra

We live in “modern times”, which seem to be the age of populism, marked by fears, social insecurity, hatred, discrimination and narcissism. We live in a world that seems to increasingly divide into black and white, monotonous, colorless. A young generation finds itself again between hope and doubt, between rebelliousness and fear; a generation that strives for self-expression and self-fulfillment, and must watch as this society is slowly driven to the brink of madness.

Well, Summery Mind does not really see itself as a political band and they certainly do not want to point their finger at someone and blame them. That happens often enough. The band’s purpose with this album is identity and self-realization, to further encourage a young generation to form their own minds and thoughts, to go through the world in an unprejudiced way, to take responsibility and to paint their intuition of the world in all their bright colors instead of falling into a black and white thinking.
