FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 56:06 minutes | 1,12 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Odradek Records

A journey across Italian flavours, classical tones, Nordic landscapes, free improvisations, with a distant echo of Argentinean tango. For Italian jazz artist Paolo Russo, Overland encapsulates his love of travel: relaxed, spacious, allowing time to absorb an array of atmospheres. This is reflected musically on this album in Russo’s evocations of specific places – a Norwegian fjord, a Brazilian village, the Danish countryside, South American cities, the Adriatic coast – which are communicated in combination with his emotional responses to those journeys. The result is jazz of kaleidoscopic colours, conjuring up the spirit of adventure to create a vivid sense of place and time.

Paolo Russo is a versatile musician who plays an array of instruments on this album: bandoneon, piano, and synthesizers. He is joined by artists who, like Russo himself, are all well-established on the international jazz scene: Swedish double bassist Thommy Andersson and fellow Italian Marcello Di Leonardo on drums, with guest appearances from saxophonist Fabrizio Mandolini and percussionist Bruno Marcozzi.

Paice Ashton Lord was a short-lived but spectacular moment in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. ‘Malice in Wonderland’ is the only album the band release, back in 1977. Influenced by Jon Lord and Tony Ashton’s previous collaborations it merged rock with big band Swing, Rhythm ‘n’ Blues and Funk. The one thing they didn’t want to end up being was laid-back. And they didn’t. ‘Malice in Wonderland’ is driving and swinging feel-good rock at its finest.

Fans and critics alike are no stranger to Anderson’s impeccable ability to connect as a songwriter, with Billboard hailing that he has a “knack for writing emotionally connecting, hook-laden songs that linger in the brain for days’ as well as Idolator calling the band’s past songs, “well-crafted and infectious.”

With an authority developed over two decades on the circuit, Partisans are proud to unleash their first live album, Nit De Nit, recorded at London’s Vortex Club. Across this rezzed-up hour-plus of back-catalogue reinventions and new delights, electric guitarist Phil Robson, saxophonist Julian Siegel, electric bassist Thaddeus Kelly and drummer Gene Calderazzo command the stage with inimitable joie de vivre.

As writers and co-leaders, Robson and Siegel had long thought of releasing a live account of their dynamic shows: “We’ve played many memorable gigs over the years and wanted to capture that energy, in the great tradition of jazz recording.” And though Partisans’ music is carefully conceived, the emphasis is on collective improvisation, explains Phil: “There’s something particular about the way this band gets its material together – we need to play live to get a glimpse of how it’s going to be. Our writing simply sets it in motion, with nothing set in stone, because everyone brings so much personality to it.”

There’s a sense of occasion, nowadays, when they gig in the UK, especially after Robson’s relocation to New York; and the Vortex holds special relevance for Partisans. “The band got its break at the old Vortex (in Stoke Newington) which, in the mid-1990s, was like our local club”, says Siegel. “Back then, most venues were pretty straight-ahead, but that was such a melting pot.” Their sound has evolved significantly from more acoustic origins – inspired along the way by the likes of Bill Frisell, John Scofield and Dave Holland’s Extensions band – into the rock-heavy powerhouse it is today.

A quotation from Charlie Parker’s ‘Klact-oveeseds-tene’ preludes ‘Max’ (from Partisans’ album of the same name), an homage to Max Roach, whose audacious rhythms grace the original Parker recording. As Calderazzo replicates his intricacy (four bars of five, then four of three), the band launch into their own heady bebop celebration, Siegel and Robson unifying its perky riffs. Sidewalk-grooving ‘That’s Not His Bag’ (after pandemonium boarding a flight) hints at Steely Dan; and ‘Nit De Nit’ (hear that call-and-answer) suggests Parker again, only to snap into impressively-synced frenzy and fast swing.

Siegel’s shamelessly brash blues arrangement of ‘John, I’m Only Dancing’, from a classic Bowie songwriting era, indicates a massive Miles influence. A groundhog’s punctual daily arrival in Robson’s New Jersey garden is behind ‘3:15 (On the Dot)’, Siegel’s bass clarinet emphasising tentative footfall around lush guitar chords and improvisational freedom. Punky ‘The Overthink’ is titled following an official’s reassurance to Siegel in boarding the right train: “Don’t overthink it”, while the guitar hues of ‘Eg’ (Egberto Gismonti) provide a Brazilian flavor. Swaggering mash-up ‘Pork Scratching’ features fine percussive detail and bass-pedal electronics before the set closes to koto-like ‘Last Chance’… with a ferocious sting in the tail.

“The band’s early days seem like a lifetime ago!”, admits Robson. “But, alongside being old friends, it’s the exceptional energy which keeps us invigorated – we have such a great time.” Partisans’ superb live recording suggests there’s no stopping them.

The Bossarenova Trio stands for an elegant as well as brilliant mix of exquisite jazz ingredients and the finest Brazilian rhythms. Ironically, in the New York S.O.B.s gave the Brazilian-German threesome in 2011 his sensational live debut. Since then, singer Paula Morelenbaum, trumpeter Joo Kraus and pianist Ralf Schmid have conquered the rest of the world with their sensual, close-to-life music. Paula Morelenbaum became on the side of Antonio Carlos Jobim a worldwide acknowledged bossa nova-capacity. Her two partners Joo Kraus and Ralf Schmid are among the most experimental and creative minds of German jazz. On albums such as the latest stroke of genius “Atlântico”, the “Bossarenova Trio” succeeds in creating a harmonious melange that works without any emphasis on the zeitgeist or classical forms. The current recordings are no less than a bridge between cultures, between European songs and the musical language of the South American continent.

Written by Paul Stephenson and arranged by Paul Gunter, these songs bring to mind a time when Simon & Garfunkel songs received regular air-play on the radio. Lyrics remind us to appreciate the life we’ve been given be grateful for people in our lives. “You might think that, having written the songs and made demos of the, rehearsed them and laid down the basic tracks, this album would be familiar territory for me. But, thanks to Gunter Pauler’s arrangements, it’s something of a magical mystery tour for me – and, I hope, for you too. Gunter always finds a new unexpected angle that I’d never have thought of.

“I’m feeling very lucky to be able to bring you this latest album in the company of such a troupe of fine musicians, produced with his usual finesse by Grammy nominee, Gunter Pauler. Thanks to them all, from the bottom of my heart.” (Paul Stephenson)

“(Paul is) not only a very delicate and refined guitar stylist but also a genuine poet. (There is a) perfect harmony between the music and the lyrics.” (Jean-Marie Pouchain)

“Intricate, finely crafted and sensitive to life’s mutability, the songs are performed with understated passion and tenderness.” (Keith Stimpson)

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 48:20 minutes | 995 MB | Genre: Blues
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Universal Music Enterprises

All Blues, the forthcoming covers album from the Peter Frampton Band, is set for release on June 7 via UMe. The album is a collection of Frampton’s favorite blues classics and was recorded with his longtime touring band, made up of Adam Lester (guitar/vocals), Rob Arthur (keyboards/guitar/vocals) and Dan Wojciechowski (drums). All Blues was recorded at Frampton’s home studio in Nashville, Studio Phenix, and was co-produced by Chuck Ainlay and Peter Frampton. Now available for pre-order on 2 LP vinyl featuring bonus track I Feel So Good and album art etching on side D.

All Blues represents a return to roots of sorts for Peter Frampton. At the outset of his career, he was a hotshot six-string slinger, earning his stripes playing sheets of loud, gnarled guitar in Humble Pie, the band Steve Marriott formed after leaving the Small Faces. Frampton never lost his rep as a great guitarist and the blues was never far from his fingertips, but he also didn’t devote a record to the blues the way he does on this 2019 album. It’s possible Frampton intended the album to be part of a full-circle farewell: when he announced the album’s release and its accompanying tour, he also announced that he has inclusion-body myositis, a degenerative autoimmune disease that weakens the muscles. Knowledge of Frampton’s disease does lend All Blues a degree of poignancy; it’s not intended as his final album — at the time of its release, he had a collection of original material in the works — yet it’s hard not to think that it may not exist if Frampton didn’t believe he should seize the day. That’s precisely what he does on All Blues, an album that takes its name from the Miles Davis composition that kicks off the trumpeter’s seminal 1959 album Kind of Blue. Frampton’s choice to cover Davis suggests how he’s willing to play within the margins of this album, adding hints of jazz and swing. Primarily, though, he’s interested in delivering revved-up covers of blues standards, occasionally with the assistance of a friend: Sonny Landreth pops up on “The Thrill Is Gone,” Steve Morse shows up on “Going Down Slow,” while Kim Wilson plays on “I Just Want to Make Love to You.” If Frampton doesn’t take many chances with either the songs or arrangements — this is straight-up classic British blues that leans heavily on the Chicago school — there’s still a palpable sense of passion and joy on All Blues, and that evident big, beating heart makes it worth a spin. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Prism Tats front man Garett van der Spek knew from an early age that rock and roll was not only his calling but his window and rocket ship to the outside world. While proud of his South African origins, it was through his parents record collection that he was spoon fed western rock ‘n roll, pop and R’nB, and it left it’s mark. Although Prism Tats began as a one-man band with a drum machine keeping beat for van der Spek’s quite modestly self-described “yelping and noodling”, it has quickly gained momentum: after enlisting a live drummer, local performances at the Bootleg, the Echo and the Growlers 3rd annual Beach Goth Party have begun to turn Angelenos’ heads. Their debut, self-titled, album is bookended by the reverb-laden “Pacifist Masochist” at the start and the back-to-back tag-team of “Haunt Me” and “Know It All” at the finish. This trio of songs recalls the ghostly throwback groove-stomp and fuzzy warmth of bands like The Jesus & Mary Chain and The Raveonettes, with Van der Spek flexing his vocal chops in different registers.

The fifth album from Norwegian band PRISTINE showcases the band’s consistent development and increasingly diverse influences. Heidi Solheim, the band’s lead singer and creative mastermind from Tromso, spanned a wide musical and lyrical range to write eleven songs for “Road Back To Ruin” – the band and her voice are the album’s common threads.

The song “Sinnerman” was written during the 2018 tour, and its intensity makes it the perfect album opener. The title track barrels towards listeners with a massiveness that gives the song real weight. As does “Blind Spot”, a song that includes a short intro performed in Arabic by Syrian singer Racha Rizk, which is followed by powerful riffs from Espen Elverum Jacobsen, PRISTINE’s guitarist and the band’s “secret weapon.” “Cause & Effect” is at the other end of the spectrum; this track was recorded with the 20-musician string orchestra “The Arctic Philharmonic”, which gave it a 007 vibe. And then there is the truly atypical but wonderful “Your Song inspired by Neil Young’s acoustic recordings.

Go ahead and read that name… Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Respond as needed, then set it to the side for about 33 minutes. Do likewise with And Now for the Whatchamacallit, a blandly ambiguous title likely stemming from some inside joke shared by its four creators. Behind this veil of overt psych nuttiness lies a rather impressive album made with plenty of craft and attention to detail. On their first two releases, the Australian combo developed a riffy 21st century take on guitar-based psych rock, filtering the progressive elements of forebears like Pink Floyd and Soft Machine through more contemporary heroes like Tame Impala and adding a dose of garage grit. Not nearly as wacky as their name suggests, they came out of the gate with the chops of a band who put in their time at the rehearsal space. On album number three, PPC tighten their approach, turning in a more muscular and intricate set with some blazing guitar work and clever melodies. The dueling axes of Jack McEwan and Luke Parish are at the heart of the band’s sound with the former also providing lead vocals. With its mighty guitarmonies and tuneful thump, the infectious “Bill’s Mandolin” is the most immediately pleasing highlight here, though the soaring, spacy pomp of “Social Candy” and the labyrinthine layers of “Native Tongue” also offer plenty in terms of their musicality. Tucked inside the gaps are interesting tonal layers and little experimental shifts that expand the dimensions of what are otherwise, tightly built rock songs with great fuzzed-out riffs. It’s a bit of a shame that the band’s name may turn potential fans away at the door, but PPC work pretty hard to overcome their self-imposed handicap and turn in an exciting and solidly built third LP. ~ Timothy Monger

The modern-day appreciation of Francesco Bartolomeo Conti takes a decisive turn in the direction of his church music with this early eighteenth-century composers Missa Sancti Pauli given an ideal recording on Glossa by György Vashegyi, the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra. Conti was a Florentine who worked for much of his career in the Imperial Court in Vienna, generating much attention there the ever-observant JS Bach and Zelenka were both known to have been attracted by his music.

Curiously, it was liturgical works like this 1715 Missa Sancti Pauli which kept Contis name known until near to the end of the nineteenth century rather than the operas, oratorios and cantatas with which he delighted the Viennese Court and which have hitherto been receiving the attention of artists and record labels today. If Contis church music is less fledgling Classical than his dramatic fare, there is much in the way of melodic tunefulness and concertato style for both voices and instruments to combine with fugal-imitative writing reminiscent of the stile antico. The work is a Credo Mass, with its rondo-like restatement of the word in the Credo section. The tone, control, presence and unity of the Purcell Choir have been amply demonstrated already on Glossa in music of the French Baroque Rameau and Mondonville in particular and the singers are given full opportunity to shine in Contis mass as are the orchestra, comprised mainly of strings, and the vocal soloists, who include Adriána Kalafszky, Péter Bárány, Zoltán Megyesi and Thomas Dolié. Bárány and Megyesi are also soloists in two additional works: the motet, Fastos caeli audite and the aria Pie Jesu, ad te refugio.

The Orfeo Orchestra’s taut strings are led expertly by violinist Simon Standage and there is judicious continuo-playing from theorbist István Györe and organist Augustin Szokos. The concise contributions of soloists are interwoven deftly with the Purcell Choir’s polished yet warmly sonorous singing of rich counterpoint…The contrapuntal details are balanced and projected with impeccable transparency.
Gramophone Magazine January 2019

This outstanding group of musicians, together with exceptional soloists, give a memorable performance of Conti’s Mass; perfectly phrased singing and cleverly articulated playing allows this tuneful music to flow with pure enjoyment. The disc ends with an aria for tenor and strings, Pie Jesu, ad te refugio. This CD should be one of the highlights of 2019.

Long available as a much-sought-after bootleg, this legendary concert from the Bridges to Babylon tour was finally made commercially available. Recorded at Bremen’s Weserstadion on September 2, 1998 and fully remastered, it sees the Stones at the height of their powers before an adoring crowd, tearing through a selection of their greatest hits as well as tracks from the then-current Bridges to Babylon album. ~ John D. Buchanan

Bridges To Bremen is the full-length show performed by The Stones on the fifth and final leg of the Bridges To Babylon Tour. Filmed at the German city’s Weserstadion on September 2, 1998, the band had by then completed four legs in the stadiums and arenas of North America (twice), Asia and South America before finally landing in Europe early that summer. Ever the innovators, Bridges To Babylon was a tour of firsts – thp first time the band went on the road with a permanent В-stage, and also the first time where fans could vote on the band’s website for a track they wanted to hear on the setlist – Memory Motel in the case of the Bremen fans.

There are many bridges to cross in a lifetime as the greatest rock’n’roll band in the world. But those that The Rolling Stones traversed on their worldwide tour of the 1997-98 season helped them make the crossing towards a new century and to reach even greater heights as the live entertainers that their peers could only dream of being.

The live phenomenon of the band’s latter 20th century iteration was the sum of all the parts they had played on stage for decades. This was a group breaking its own records for fun. The Bridges To Babylon tour started in September 1997, six days before the release of the album that inspired it, and finished four days short of a year later. By then, it had played nearly 100 shows across four continents and become the second-highest-grossing tour in history to that point. The only one in front of it? Their own Voodoo Lounge extravaganza of 1994-95.

The Bridges To Babylon set was focused on a giant circular central screen, which opened and closed with fireworks and documented Mick’s every move, Keith and Ronnie’s licks and Charlie’s rock steady beat in stunning close-up. But the other premise of this year-long excursion was even more brilliantly and outlandishly ambitious: to take the title of the new album quite literally and create a huge cantilever bridge to stretch 150 feet to a “B” stage in the centre of the stadium field.
