【Unplugged

Recorded: February 2016, Westminster Abbey, London, United Kingdom

A trio of English composers perhaps better known for their creative output in other fields, yet who played a crucial role in the development of the Anglican choral tradition in the twentieth century. James O’Donnell and Westminster Abbey Choir present a programme centred on Finzi’s Lo, the full, final sacrifice: the other works may be less familiar but are no less moving.

The Anglican choral tradition is shaped and defined as much by its buildings as by its choirs. Whether it’s St Paul’s Cathedral, the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, or the Chapel Royal, centuries of music have grown from and for these spaces. Westminster Abbey is one building with a long musical legacy but its spacious acoustic is both blessing and curse, as the choir’s latest disc makes clear.
Anthems from Finzi, Bax and Ireland should be a natural fit for the Westminster Abbey choir but again and again here it seems as though James O’Donnell’s musical choices are dictated by the constraints of the space, rather than evolving organically from the needs of the repertoire itself. Tempos are consistently slow – problematic for lighter, more lyrical works such as Bax’s I sing of a maiden and Ireland’s upper-voices anthem Ex ore innocentium – but there’s also an unexpected lack of flexibility and flow within these more stately speeds.
Compare the Finzi performances, for example, to those on the 2002 recording from St John’s, Cambridge. Both God is gone up and the Magnificat may have more heft, more gravitas under O’Donnell but the surging attack and sinewy tone of Christopher Robinson’s singers is much more thrilling. This disparity is particularly evident in the album’s centrepiece – Finzi’s expansive Lo, the full, final sacrifice. The work’s episodic structure begs for distinctively characterised, contrasting sections, yet the Choir of Westminster Abbey remain doggedly consistent, and much needed rhetorical clarity is lost in this space.
The choir’s diffuse tone – breathier in the upper voices than rivals at New College or even King’s, Cambridge – is very effective at softer volumes (Ireland’s Greater love works beautifully) but lacks blade at moments of climax, and some scrappy singing from basses too often gives chords an unfocused foundation on which to build. While it’s good to see Bax’s comparatively neglected anthems getting some attention, there’s little else here that isn’t better served on the rich variety of existing recordings. –Alexandra Coghlan, Gramophone

DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz  | Time – 01:09:12 minutes | 2,73 GB | Genre: New Age
Source: ISO SACD | © Little Hartley Music | Front Cover
Recorded by Will Ackerman for Imaginary Road Studios on a Steinway B; Mastered by Bob Ludwig, Gateway Mastering

Fiona’s Blue Dream album was the most ambitious project of my entire career and resulted in one of the most remarkable collaborations this genre has ever known. Blue Dream is unique and I’m as proud of it as anything I’ve ever worked on in my 35 year career of Grammy Awards and gold /platinum records. – Will Ackerman, founder Windham Hill Records

It’s a long way from Australia to Vermont – about 10,000 miles to be more precise, but the journey was worth it for pianist/composer Fiona Joy Hawkins to have her album recorded and produced by the legendary Windham Hill Records founder Will Ackerman. As it turned out, the experience was equally rewarding for him as well. In Will’s own words: “ ‘Blue Dream’ began as the most ambitious project of my entire career and resulted in one of the most remarkable collaborations this genre has ever known. ‘Blue Dream’ is unique and I’m as proud of it (and Fiona) as anything I’ve ever worked on in my 35 year career of Grammy Awards and gold and platinum records.” That is lofty praise indeed coming from someone who has worked with some of the most talented instrumentalists in contemporary music. There were no shortage of them on this album either which included T-Bone Wolk from Hall and Oates, post-Dylan singer-songwriter Luka Bloom, cellist Eugene Friesen of the Paul Winter Consort, Jeff Haynes from the Pat Metheny Group, and many others too numerous to mention.
However, not one to be overshadowed by the talent surrounding her, the spotlight deservedly belongs to Fiona. Classically trained, she became enamored with the piano at an early age, and in particular by Ravel’s Bolero. Later influences included composers such as Chopin and Mendelssohn as well as modern pianists like George Winston and Michael Nyman. Her music, which has been described as “transcultural instrumental,” incorporates elements of classical, jazz, new age, and world music. It is a combination that listeners obviously find appealing as she has over 43 Awards and nominations across 9 countries. In fact this album “Blue Dream” achieved the highest ranking in the history of the NAR International Radio Charts and won the ZMR Album of the Year, Best Piano Album, and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album awards.
The CD extends well over an hour and its 22 tracks are interestingly arranged between full length songs and shorter “interludes,” some only a minute or two and serve as an aural sorbet between the courses. However, while the album is divided as just described, it is actually created as a continuous musical flow and crystallizes beautifully as one complete body of work. Listening to it from beginning to end takes the listener on a journey, somewhat like a film score. Within this flow, the listener will find an incredible diversity of instruments, influences, and themes, sometimes in the context of one composition, all centered around Fiona’s elegant and expressive piano playing. One of my favorite pieces, “Song Phonique” starts out with introspective solo piano and within the arc of its’ arrangement evolves into a driving rhythmic section before coming full circle to reprise the piano it began with. Although “Blue Dream” is primarily an instrumental album, there are definitely vocals, both male and female, however they tend to be more ambient and function almost as instruments in the mix rather than providing lyrical content.
And speaking of instrumentation, a wide spectrum is reflected including didgeridoo, guitars, mandolin, English horn, percussion, bass, cello, flugelhorn, keyboards, flute, saxophone, and more. These certainly provide a full palate of musical colors, which is only appropriate since Fiona also includes painting among her artistic endeavors. According to her: “Colors, ideas and emotions all have corresponding sounds. I believe in the power of music as a source of inspiration and a way of reaching people, and I can transfer a musical quality through my art to the canvas.” And similarly, “she has always been interested in creating music that evokes images and emotions and tells a story.“
With 22 tracks, it would be challenging to find space for an in-depth description of each piece, but in addition to the aforementioned “Song Phonique”, some of the high points for me were the soulful “Standing Up,” the lush piano, heavenly vocals and later electric guitar flourishes on “Contemplating,” and for a change up- the world music influenced “Samite’s Interlude” which featured a totally different kind of “piano” – the kalimba or African thumb piano. The emotional depth of Fiona’s keyboard artistry is exquisitely illustrated on “Somewhere” which brings the album to a dramatic and heartfelt conclusion. These examples, along with all the incredible music on this CD, show why this album has resonated so strongly with critics and listeners alike and why it has received numerous awards and international recognition. Listening to it uninterrupted from start to finish is a powerful musical experience and one which producer/arranger T-Bone Wolk described as “ an unforgettable magic carpet ride into the heavens.” There is a lot of magic here in the way all the various, and sometimes unlikely, combination of elements and musicians intertwine to weave a dream you won’t want to wake up from.

Hubert Hoffmann: When I visited the Benedictine Abbey of Kremsmünster in Upper Austria some years ago to look at the lutes stored in the abbey archives, I could not guess that this visit would radically change my life as a lutenist. I learnt that the writer of tablatures I discovered was a member of the abbey named Pater Ferdinando (Fischer). It soon turned out that much of the music set down by this scribe was not to be found in the numberless lute manuscripts from this period scattered around the world. These were unique manuscripts. Moreover they contained quite extraordinary works of striking compositional quality: new lute music in the form of cyclical poems of a lute enthusiast – a padre – at the turn of the 17th/18th centuries.
In one of the quietest recording studios in all of Europe – the Galaxy studios in Mol, Belgium – we finally brought the long since faded lute-poems of Pater Ferdinando back to life. Through the wonderfully delicate sound of my lute, Bert’s immeasurable sensitivity and the most advanced recording technology that I have ever had the privilege of using, the lutenist-pater began speaking to us once more.
Contextually Fischer’s putative original compositions are only distinguishable from the other anonymous works through their stylistic features. The first clue is to be found in the considerable proportion of previously completely unknown cycles, whose exquisite quality, high degree of originality and compositional autonomy, together with the considerable technical demands they make upon the player, lead us to assume a common authorship.

With ‘Paris 1884-1959’, his first record with Aparté, Florian Billot gives us the soul of a city of which he is the pure musical result: he studied with Michel Béroff at the great institution common to almost all composers on this CD, the Conservatoire de Paris, from 2002. From the romanticism of Franck, to the enlightening appeal to sensuality of Debussy, through the clear writting of Henri Dutilleux’s ‘Sonate’, Florian Billot leads us to French musical treasure. ‘Pavane pour une infante défunte’ and ‘Improvisation n°15, Hommage à Edith Piaf’ by Francis Poulenc, end the disc with a heartfelt hommage from one of the Six to his friend. Florian Billot offers a subtle and comforting musical interpretation, highlighting the colours of Parisian life in the early 20th century.

Arabella Steinbacher & Robert Kulek – Cesar Franck & Richard Strauss (2014)
DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz  | Time – 58:11 minutes | 2,3 GB

Violinist Arabella Steinbacher and pianist Robert Kulek continue their great collaboration with a new PENTATONE release, the recording of Cesar Franck’s Sonata for Piano and Violin in A, which joins Richard Strauss’ Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-flat, Op. 18. While Franck’s violin sonata is epic in character, Strauss’ work is full of jovial energy, hope and anticipation. This fusion of elements brilliantly demonstrates the synergy between Steinbacher and Kulek, something we have witnessed during their recital performances over the past few years.

In the decade after the breakup of his retro punk outfit Million Dead, singer/songwriter Frank Turner has transformed himself from the solo folk-punk singer who played dank London basements to headlining Wembley, writing a best-selling autobiography, and becoming the subject of ideological political intrigue in The Guardian. Like 2013’s Tape Deck Heart, Positive Songs for Negative People looks back and in, but only as a way of integrating a bruised and broken self. Backing band the Sleeping Souls and producer Butch Walker are the twin engines that fuel his transformation. “The Angel of Islington” is a solo acoustic number. From the banks of the River Thames, he desires to “wash my feet and cleanse my sins…” He’s pondering the relationship that was so devastating on Tape Deck Heart, but resolves to move beyond it no matter the cost. “Get Better” is a melodic, anthemic basher (complete with Springsteen-esque pianos), where Turner testifies “I got me a future/I’m not stuck in the past/I’ve got no new tricks…But me, I’m a machine and I’m built to last.” By the time he reaches the end, he’s no longer merely talking about himself but exhorting all of us to “get better.” Further on, buoyed by boisterous electric guitars and a bruising snare, Turner sings about stepping out from his desolation to face “The Next Storm.” As the album moves on, his songs address over and again the topic of emergence and his belief — naive though it may be — in the power of rock & roll to engage the collective “us” as a way of redeeming the world one individual at a time. In “Glorious,” via blended acoustic and electric guitars, slipshod snare, and a rumbling bassline, he gets under the skin of the listener: “Come on now, if we all pulled together/We could lift the weight of the world from your shoulders….” His declaration is answered by an enormous backing chorus, which gives it the conviction of a gospel song. The clattering, punk burn of “Out of Breath,” with its triple-time snare, careening piano, and wiry guitars, is the album’s most unhinged track; it’s Turner’s closest musical relation to his work with Million Dead. “Demons,” another soaring rocker, addresses disappointments, compromises, and hard-won blessings: “At this truth we have arrived/God damn it’s great to be alive.” Out of character — at least on the surface — is “Silent Key,” a poignant story of astronaut Christa McAuliffe’s final radio transmission from the doomed Space Shuttle Challenger, but fits the album’s overall themes. Positive Songs for Negative People is a transitory record. Musically, it doesn’t contain anything new — that’s for an album further down the road — but it doesn’t need to. Here, solid songs filled with common-sense poetry bristle with renewed energy and purpose. It’s an invigorating, infectious set that reaffirms Turner’s faith in music’s power to motivate and heal.

Best known for her Grammy-winning folk hit “We’ll Sing in the Sunshine,” Gale Garnett later carved out a long-lived career as a writer and actress.

Gale Zoë Garnett was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on July 17, 1942; her family moved to Canada when she was 11, and she made her public singing debut in 1960. In 1964, Garnett scored a Top Five pop hit with her original composition “We’ll Sing in the Sunshine,” and recorded her debut album, My Kind of Folk Songs, for RCA Victor. Riding the success of “We’ll Sing in the Sunshine,” which won a Grammy for Best Folk Recording, Garnett continued to record through the rest of the ’60s, eventually breaking into psych-pop with a backing band called the Gentle Reign.

Toward the end of the 1960s, she also began appearing in feature films and on television shows, usually in supporting roles. In subsequent years, Garnett also branched out into journalism, writing essays, columns, and book reviews for various newspapers and magazines. Additionally, she wrote and performed two one-person theater pieces, Gale Garnett & Company and Life After Latex. –Artist Biography by Steve Huey

Best-known for his work with Deep Purple, Glenn Hughes doesn’t rest on his laurels on his first solo album in eight years, Resonate. In addition to his tight live band, Hughes is joined by friend and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith on the opening and closing tracks. Resonate might well be the heaviest of Hughes’s solo albums, but as is his trademark, musical diversity shines through, blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk.

“It’s heavy in content lyrically and it’s musically heavy, but it’s got a lot of groove … I think it’s quite dramatic … there’s a lot of light and shade. But the emphasis is really heavy grooves and that’s what I write … everybody needs to know that this is absolutely a return to rock music as a solo artist for me. My work is very varied … but this album is probably THE heaviest record I’ve done in at least 25 years. It’s dense. It’s dark. There’s some aggression on this record. Every bloody track is begging to be played live.” –Glenn Hughes

Recorded: Firehouse Studios, Pasadena, CA; J&P Studios, Simi Valley, CA; LAFX Studios, North Hollywood, CA.

Winning 4 Grammys and 20 Grammy nominations is a reliable indicator for constant and high-level professionalism. Gordon Goodwin built his fame with the Big Phat Band, a large 18-piece ensemble. Little Phat Band is his 8-member alternative.
Their debut album An Elusive Man is available since September 9, 2016. Beside Gordon (piano and tenor sax) are performing Wayne Bergeron (trumpet), Eric Marienthal (alto and tenor sax), Andy Martin (trombone), Andrew Synowiec (electric and acoustic guitar), Rick Shaw (electric and acoustic bass), Bernie Dresel (drums) and Joey De Leon (percussion).
The LP Shuffle is a striking example for a Big Band formation with natural energy and a blistering chemistry. The emphasis is on pure brass in straight swinging. Cot In The Act is full of fun and flavor with guitar and sax in expanding solos. But when the brass team gets underway, the music is reaching full steam.
Behind You opens a plethora of musical boxes, moods and styles. One never knows what to find next corner. On the title track Andrew Synowiec brings in a sonic fury with bluesy approach on electric guitar through distortion effects. The various horns amp up to a powerful equipoise.
Samba Cya pulses with impressive solos by pianist Gordon Goodwin and guitarist Andrew Synowiec. A scorebook of this Latin jazz tune is available. Garaje Gato (Garage Cat) celebrates the salsa, the rhythm and more flowers of beautiful Latin America with musical pyrotechnics of Wayne Bergeron on trumpet, Bernie Dresel on drums and Gordon on piano.
With I Know You and Miles Davis’ Walkin’ Little Phat Band returns to the swinging jazz of East Coast with a broad jazz orchestration. In A Sentimental Mood is a composition by Duke Ellington (1935), he recorded with John Coltrane. The band keeps the original arrangement untouched and opens this way a window to the glorious time of Big Bands with their very own spirit.
Why We Can’t Have Nice Things exposes Eric Marienthal’s impressive talent on tenor sax which he only can expand in full range when he is performing the jazz realm. Andy Martin follows with another smashing solo on trombone.
Gordon Goodwin is with his formations the first address in Big Bands and with An Elusive Man he remains in this genre the measure of all things.

Has it really already been 50 years since The Grateful Dead released their debut album? My, my, those half-centuries certainly do fly by…
In commemoration of this momentous anniversary, we’re kicking off an equally-momentous, utterly epic album reissue series of the Dead’s back catalog, one which involves two-disc deluxe editions and limited-edition picture disc versions of all the group’s studio and live albums. The original albums will have newly remastered sound, the second disc of each will contain unreleased recordings, and the 12” picture discs will contain that same newly-remastered audio. Mind you, it’ll be a limited-edition situation with the vinyl reissues, so if you don’t rush to get one of the 10,000 copies we’re producing, you’ll be out of luck.
In the case of THE GRATEFUL DEAD: 50th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION, the bonus disc features the band’s complete unreleased concert from July 29, 1966 and select cuts from July 30, 1966 at the P.N.E. Garden Auditorium in British Columbia. The band’s performances at the Vancouver Trips Festival are among only a handful of recordings that exist from the Dead’s first two years, so just know what a big deal this is.

The Grateful Dead’s eponymously titled debut long-player was issued in mid-March of 1967. This gave rise to one immediate impediment — the difficulty in attempting to encapsulate/recreate the Dead’s often improvised musical magic onto a single LP. Unfortunately, the sterile environs of the recording studio disregards the subtle and often not-so-subtle ebbs and zeniths that are so evident within a live experience. So, while this studio recording ultimately fails in accurately exhibiting the Grateful Dead’s tremendous range, it’s a valiant attempt to corral the group’s hydra-headed psychedelic jug-band music on vinyl. Under the technical direction of Dave Hassinger — who had produced the Rolling Stones as well as the Jefferson Airplane — the Dead recorded the album in Los Angeles during a Ritalin-fuelled “long weekend” in early 1967. Rather than prepare all new material for the recording sessions, a vast majority of the disc is comprised of titles that the band had worked into their concurrent performance repertoire. This accounts for the unusually high ratio (seven:two) of folk and blues standards to original compositions. The entire group took credit for the slightly saccharine “Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion),” while Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) is credited for the noir garage-flavored raver “Cream Puff War.” Interestingly, both tracks were featured as the respective A- and B-sides of the only 45 rpm single derived from this album. The curious aggregate of cover tunes featured on the Dead’s initial outing also demonstrates the band’s wide-ranging musical roots and influences. These include Pigpen’s greasy harp-fuelled take on Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Good Morning Little School Girl” and the minstrel one-man-band folk of Jessie “the Lone Cat” Fuller’s “Beat It On Down the Line.” The apocalyptic Cold War folk anthem “Morning Dew” (aka “[Walk Me Out in The] Morning Dew”) is likewise given a full-bodied electric workout as is the obscure jug-band stomper “Viola Lee Blues.” Fittingly, the Dead would continue to play well over half of these tracks in concert for the next 27 years. –AllMusic Review by Lindsay Planer
