FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 34:54 minutes | 667 MB | Genre: Jazz

Recorded: April 16th and 17th, 1968 at Max Lussi, Basel, Switzerland

This obscure album is a hidden gem. Dee Dee McNeil began her career singing jazz with such greats as Hampton Hawes and Frank Butler, and then veered towards R&B and soul, writing hit songs for Motown. The Afro-American singer/songwriter’s pieces have been recorded by the likes of Diana Ross & the Supremes, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and Nancy Wilson. Singer Barry Window’s father was South African, and those roots serve him well: he is the perfect counterweight to Dee Dee’s resonant voice. Saxophonist Barney Wilen is something of a jazz legend in France, having played with Miles Davis on the sound track for Louis Malle’s iconic Ascenseur pour l’échafaud. Wilen recorded two highly regarded MPS albums under his own name: Dear Prof. Leary and Auto Jazz. With its funky renditions of such classics as New Orleans R&B legend Allen Toussant’s Get Out of My Life Woman, Wilson Pickett’s Midnight Hour, and Ray Charles’ It’s Alright heated by incendiary instrumental solos and fervent vocals, the album sweats soul.

Del Wood was one of the best female musicians in the history of country music and one of the few to make it big playing the piano. Her best-known song is her novelty version of “Down Yonder,” which hit both the country and pop charts in 1951. It also earned her a gold record and a guest-starring appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. In 1952, she became a member of the Opry and remained so until her death in 1989. Wood was born Polly Adelaide Hendricks in Nashville, Tennessee and began playing the piano at age five. Her stage name was created by combining part of her middle name with part of her married name (Hazelwood). Although she only had one hit, Wood recorded many albums during her long career. ~ Sandra Brennan

I Believe in Little Things is a carefully curated album that highlights Diana Panton’s enchanting vocals on obscure gems and classic children’s masterpieces from Disney, Sesame Street, Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory etc. Her sweet pure expression is a hand-in-glove fit for this timeless material. There is a penetrating power to Panton’s storytelling of the songs. This, coupled with exemplary recording quality, Don Thompson’s delightful jazz arrangements and masterful accompaniment by Thompson, Reg Schwager and Coenraad Bloemendal give new scope to this repertoire. The album was selected as the Best Jazz Album of 2015 by Books.com (Taiwan’s equivalent to Amazon.com). It was the third Bestseller of 2015 at Eslite in Hong Kong and landed in the TOP 10 Jazz Bestsellers list of 2015 at HMV, Japan.

Real-life singing fairy, Diana Panton, brings us a new album inspired by her imagination […]. The cute cover illustration by Jacqui Lee shows a girl cycling with a bear, fox and mouse – the perfect beginning to this delightful album. Panton, who has grown to become the representative singer of the Canadian jazz scene, explains in the liner notes that “Imagination is one of our greatest gifts”. Imagination and childlike innocence are key concepts to understanding this album. Panton was prompted to make this album based on feedback from listeners that their children sleep well listening to her music. As such, this album features lovely musical selections for kids, such as Disney’s “In a World of My Own”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “When You Wish Upon a Star” and the Carpenter’s hit “Sing”. Rest-assured however, this sweet and romantic music can appeal to all music lovers who are young at heart, not just children. I think “heartwarming”is the best word to describe this well-crafted gem. In particular, the final four tracks focus on sleeping and those suffering from stress should find it healing. –Keiichi Konishi, Jazz Japan

As a follow-up to her critically acclaimed pink album (2011 Silver Disc Award Winner in Japan) about first love, Diana Panton’s red album is a profound expression about deeper love that is not for the faint of heart. Diana leads a stellar group of Canada’s finest musicians from both the classical and jazz worlds in the creation of an album of rare beauty and emotional intensity. Don Thompson (Order of Canada) specially tailored string quartet arrangements, plus harp to compliment Panton’s ethereal voice. Phil Dwyer’s saxophone (2012 JUNO Award Winner) provides a wonderful counterpoint to Panton’s pure vocals and underscores the sensuality of much of the album. Don Thompson, Reg Schwager and Jim Vivian round out the ensemble with sensitive performances. There is also a delectable duet with bluesman Harrison Kennedy that has unbeatable chemistry! With six critically acclaimed releases in about as many years, Diana Panton is poised to take the jazz world by storm. Her impressive catalogue has garnered two Silver Disc Awards in Japan, three Juno nominations, five Hamilton Music Awards and a host of National Jazz Award nominations, as well as Canadian and U.S. Independent Music Award nominations and an invitation to perform at the prestigious Jazz à Juan, Révélations in France. She recently returned from a successful first tour of Asia where her albums have had Top 10 sales chart success in Taiwan and Hong Kong. One gets the feeling this is just the tip of the iceberg for Panton…

On her new album of love songs – Red – Diana Panton has further expanded and perfected her range of musical expression. The album showcases an impressive variety of sophisticated love songs. Once again she is backed by the exceptional guitarist Reg Schwager, Don Thompson on the piano and vibes with his colleagues Phil Dwyer on saxophone and Jim Vivian on bass. Thompson’s’ arrangements for a string quartet and harp give the jazz quartet a particularly powerful and elegant complexion. –NU:ANCE, The Magazine for Digital Audiophiles, Germany

Holly Cole, Diana Krall, Sophie Milman … Canada has introduced some big names into the world of female vocal jazz so far. Now Diana Panton is poised to be the next star there. Often compared to Blossom Dearie, Diana sings gently like a sweet whisper, but this doesn’t mean that she simply lures us in with the calming atmosphere she creates. I can assure you that her technique as a singer is more solid than many vocalists who may present themselves as technical gymnasts. For Diana, her technique is rather a vehicle for expression, so that her musical message reaches the listener. Her prior album, pink had a theme of “new love”, and the romance has moved to the next level in this new album RED. Diana’s expression doesn’t lose any of its grace in communicating these mature love songs and further reveals her purity. In addition, the elegant sounding arrangements by Don Thompson, who has supported Diana since her debut, are truly superb. –Jazz Japan

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 03:29:41 minutes | 4,51 GB | Genre: Pop, Country
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | Front Cover | © Columbia Records
Recorded: 1997-2006

Filled with big hits, classic tracks and perennial fan favorites, these are the four essential albums which secured the Dixie Chicks’ status as the top selling group in country music history. The newly remastered vinyl editions arrive on the eve of the DCX MMXVI World Tour (the Dixie Chicks’ fifth as concert headliners). Opening April 16, 2016 in Antwerp, Belgium and finishing October 10, 2016 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, DCX MMXVI marks the first time in a decade that Dixie Chicks have toured the United States as headliners (their last major stateside concert tour was with The Eagles in 2010 while their 2013-2014 Long Time Gone Tour dates were exclusive to Canada and Europe).
Collectively, these four Dixie Chicks albums have sold more than 30 million copies while taking home 13 Grammy Awards. Of the four titles, only Home has been previously available on vinyl. Each of these albums has topped Billboard’s Country Album chart and three (Fly, Home and Taking The Long Way) reached #1 on the Billboard 200 (Wide Open Spaces peaked at #4 on that chart).

Dixie Chicks first came together as a bluegrass quartet in Texas in 1989, later becoming a trio in 1995 when founding members (and sisters) Emily Robison (banjo/dobro) and Martie Maguire (fiddle/mandolin) were joined by 21-year-old Natalie Maines (daughter of guitarist/producer Lloyd Maines) as the group’s new lead vocalist and guitarist. By the late 1990s, the classic Dixie Chicks trio lineup struck a stunning balance between the traditional Nashville sound and the contemporary influences of alternative rock and pop.
Dixie Chicks succeeded beyond all expectations: their first album as a trio, Wide Open Spaces, catapulted the group to the top of the country charts and into crossover success. Aided by back-to-back Country No. 1 singles “There’s Your Trouble,” “Wide Open Spaces” and “You Were Mine,” Wide Open Spaces sold more than 12 million copies in the United States–more than all the top country acts of that year combined–and it’s still the best-selling country album by a group ever. Wide Open Spaces won the Best Country Album Grammy while “There’s Your Trouble” took home the Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal trophy.
Fly, Dixie Chicks’ successor to their major label debut, continued the group’s winning streak taking home the Best Country Album Grammy and the single, “Ready to Run” winning in the Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal category. The album topped the pop and country charts, sold more than 10 million copies and earned Dixie Chicks a rare back-to-back Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
With their next studio album, 2002’s Home, Dixie Chicks shed some of their pop influences for a more roots-based sound and sold more than six million copies in the US, generating their first pop Top 10 single, a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” in the process. Home won the Best Country Album Grammy while “Long Time Gone,” the album’s first single, grabbed the Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal trophy. Home took two more Grammys when “Lil’ Jack Slade” won Best Country Instrumental Performance and the album won Best Recording Package.
With 2006’s Taking The Long Way, Dixie Chicks made their most powerful musical and cultural statement to-date. Produced by Rick Rubin, driven by the anthemic mission statement, “Not Ready to Make Nice,” Taking The Long Way was embraced by critics and fans alike. Dixie Chicks made music history at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards when they became the first female group ever to take home the big three top Grammy honors: Song Of The Year (for “Not Ready To Make Nice”), Record Of The Year (for “Not Ready To Make Nice”) and Album Of The Year (for Taking The Long Way). They achieved another Grammy milestone that night when Taking The Long Way became the first Best Country Album ever to win the Album Of The Year trophy. In addition to joining a handful of artists to have claimed all three top Grammys in a single year, the Dixie Chicks went an incredible five-for-five, winning in each of the five categories for which they were nominated including Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal (for “Not Ready To Make Nice”) and Best Country Album (for Taking The Long Way).
With four Best Country Album Grammys–1999: Wide Open Spaces; 2000: Fly; 2003: Home; 2007: Taking The Long Way–to their credit, Dixie Chicks are the only group or artist to have won more than once in that category and are the only group or artist to have won in that category for every studio album they’ve recorded.
When Taking The Long Way debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 best-selling albums chart the week of its release in May 2006, Dixie Chicks became the first female group in chart history to have three albums debut at #1, breaking the record they’d established in 2002 when Home debuted at #1 and made them the first female group ever to have two albums debut in the top slot. With the #1 debut of Taking The Long Way, the Dixie Chicks became the first female group in chart history to have three studio albums occupy the #1 slot on the Top 200.
The first and only female group to have achieved Diamond Award status, Dixie Chicks have done it twice. Dixie Chicks have taken an extended hiatus from the studio since Taking the Long Way, with Robison and Maguire releasing two country albums as Court Yard Hounds and Maines releasing the rock-influenced Mother in 2013. But the classic Dixie Chicks trio (who last toured in 2013-2014 through Canada and Europe) is going strong, playing two shows last October for Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit and their monumental DCX MMXVI World Tour launching this April.

Recorded: February 8–10, 1966 at RCA Victor Studios, Nashville, TN

Suffer Time is an album by country music singer, Dottie West, released in 1966. This album was Dottie West’s most successful album in her whole 20-year career of releasing albums. The album peaked all the way at #3 on Billboard’s “Top Country Albums” list in 1966. The album featured West’s biggest hit so far during her career, the #5 hit “Would You Hold It Against Me”, as well as the #17 hit “What’s Come Over My Baby”. It also included the #22 hit “Before the Ring on Your Finger Turns Green”, as well as the #24 hit “Mommy Can I Still Call Him Daddy”. Both “Would You Hold It Against Me” and “Before the Ring on Your Finger Turns Green” was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Some of the songs on this album were written by West herself, including her big hit, “Would You Hold It Against Me”. Suffer Time is one of West’s best-known albums.

Dottie West is visibly suffering on the cover of her 1966 album Suffer Time. Not only is she wearing a pained expression — she appears to be on the verge of jumping off a bridge. The first song, “Mommy, Can I Still Call Him Daddy,” could certainly drive its listeners to jump off a bridge. The wretched warbling of West’s four-year-old son, Dale, renders nearly unbearable this maudlin tale of divorce as seen through the eyes of a child. Producer Chet Atkins must have had some difficulty getting a usable performance out of the tyke, because it sounds like he used a single take of the boy singing the chorus and dubbed it in everywhere it appears in the song. Even following on the heels of West’s Top Five hit “Would You Hold It Against Me” wasn’t enough to push this stinker into the Top 20. The album quickly improves, however, and wrings the tears out of a platter’s worth of weepers about dead and dying love. West composed most of the songs on the album with her husband, including the two aforementioned hits and the album’s second Top 20 entry, “What’s Come Over My Baby.” Felice and Boudleaux Bryant contributed the moderate hit “Before the Ring on Your Finger Turns Green,” the only uptempo song on the album’s first side. Atkins produced all but three cuts, which he delegated to Ray Stevens. The production style on Stevens’ tracks is noticeably different, disrupting the continuity of the album. Thanks in large part to its four hit singles, Suffer Time was a substantial hit on the country album charts, despite the liner notes’ promise that it will make its audience “taste the unhappiness of the eternal loser.” –AllMusic Review by Greg Adams

Jan Ladislav Dussek – Piano Concertos – Howard Shelley, Ulster Orchestra (2014)

Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: hyperion-records.co.uk | Booklet, Front Cover | © Hyperion Records
Recorded: September 2013, Ulster Hall, Belfast, United Kingdom

Following on from Hyperion’s hugely popular ‘Romantic Piano Concerto’ series, the ‘Classical Piano Concerto’ focuses on the lesser-known concertos from the dawn of the genre. Between about 1770 and 1820—the high classical period dominated by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven—musicians including Clementi, Cramer, Dussek, Steibelt, Woelfl and others made their names as composers and performers of piano concertos. This series aims to be the first in-depth recorded survey of this forgotten repertoire.
This first volume features three of Bohemian virtuoso Jan Ladislav Dussek’s eighteen piano concertos, taken from different points in his career. As a group, these pieces are a fascinating study, with most of the earlier works largely reflecting the Mozartian model, and the later ones revealing stylistic traits sometimes at odds with the late eighteenth-century conception of the form, and anticipating future developments in the genre.
There could be no finer guide to the hidden gems of this repertoire than Howard Shelley, whose recordings of Clementi keyboard works, and Mozart and Hummel piano concertos, have received such acclaim. He appears here as pianist / conductor with the Ulster Orchestra.

Having explored the byways of the Romantic piano concerto repertoire for Hyperion, the indefatigable Howard Shelley is now turning his attention to neglected examples of the genre from the Classical period. The three concertos by Dussek recorded here span a period of nearly 30 years, and while the early G major, Op 1 No 3, has its attractive moments, the two later works have more to offer. The Concerto in C, Op 29, very unusually begins with a slow introduction whose theme reappears, rhythmically altered, at two points in the following Allegro. Even more ambitious is the E flat Concerto Op 70 of 1810, which includes clarinets and a trombone.
Shelley plays all these pieces as stylishly as ever, and he is ably accompanied by the Ulster Orchestra. These pieces are a real find, and the disc augurs well for the series. –Misha Donat, BBC Music Magazine

Dvorak’s career was a worldwide success. He wrote his cello concerto in New York, it was rehearsed in Prague and premiered in London. Always full of tender feelings for his home country he lived an international life. He avoided speaking German though when possible and would never accept a job in Vienna. His cello concerto would become hugely popular all over the world and has occupied a significant place in the gallery of 19th century masterpieces. It took him four months to write but that reflects a freshness, a rise and shine attitude rather than the neurotic speed of city life. No teutonic bombast (Berlin), no Mahlerian pathos (Vienna), but healthy abundance of energy. Dreams but no Freud, profundity but no Angst. The orchestra is large and powerful, but this most symphonic of cello concertos doesnt become a David and Goliath freak show. The tuttis can be seen as the background for a journey. The landscapes, by night or day, under moon or sunlight are sometimes awesome but never hostile and occasionally the hero revels in a heart-warming village party. There is also room for reflection and intimacy; the solo cello is beautifully supported both in song and prayer. (…) –Pieter Wispelwey

This fine recording of Dvorák’s Cello Concerto by Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey with Hungarian conductor Iván Fischer leading the Budapest Festival Orchestra is as generous, honest, and compelling as the music itself. Wispelwey has a rich, ringing tone that can ride over orchestral tutti fortes yet still sound fully present in intimate pianissimos. He also has an elegant technique that can accomplish anything the work asks without calling undue attention to itself. These qualities allow him to lean into the work’s powerful drama and aching lyricism without dividing his attention. The commanding Fischer leads the rich-toned Budapest Festival Orchestra in an accompaniment as musically interesting and dramatically significant as the solo part. As a coupling, Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra turn in a performance of Dvorák’s infrequently programmed Symphonic Variations; it is as shapely as the venerable István Kertész account with the London Symphony. Recorded at a concert in Budapest’s Palace of Arts in 2006, Channel Classics’ super audio digital sound is extremely vivid and immediate. Though one might reasonably argue the considerable merits of the Casals/Szell or Rostropovich/Karajan recordings, for combination of performance and sound, this Wispelwey/Fischer recording could be the only one anyone would ever need. –AllMusic Review by James Leonard

Recorded: December 2014, October 2015, Rudolfinum, Dvorák Hall, Prague, Czech Republic

Maestro Belohlavek and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra return to Decca with the unforgettable Slavonic Dances from one of the most melodious, harmonious and evocative late 19th Century composers – Dvorak. Decca’s acclaimed 2014 Complete Dvorak Concertos and Symphonies release was named as one of the Top Recordings of 2014 by the New York Times: “…the set as a whole stands as eloquent testimony to this eminent orchestra’s triumphant return to international prominence…” James R. Oestreich, New York Times. Performed and recorded by musicians who have an innate understanding and deep-rooted love for this music of their homeland, this is a first-rate recording, bringing great passion and lyricism to Dvorak’s spellbinding Slavonic Dances. There is no more authentic team today to play these works: the leading Czech orchestra with the leading Czech conductor, recording in the fine acoustic of the famous Rudolfinum in Prague. In two sets, the Op.46 Slavonic Dances were such a success on release (in the late 1800’s) that Dvorak’s publisher immediately commissioned a further set (to become the Op.72) – which inspired an equally enthusiastic reception. Lively and colourful, both sets feature a variety of traditional forms of dance; Dvorak expertly working with the leaping gallop, polka odzemek and skocna, contrasted alongside luscious mazurkas and sousedsky.

Classical music listeners resort to ethnic and national generalizations too often. Some of the most insightful Beethoven interpreters were French, and there are plenty of classic non-Czech recordings of Dvorák. Yet there’s something uniquely satisfying about this version of the much-recorded Slavonic Dances (both sets, Op. 46 and Op. 72), and the satisfaction has something to do with the all-Czech origins. Take for example the match between the superb sound, recorded in Prague’s Rudolfinium hall, and the texture of Jirí Belohlávek’s Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, an ensemble he has molded into his own. The orchestra doesn’t produce a Vienna Philharmonic-like sheen, but rather a slightly gutsier sound that is reproduced to the hilt by Decca’s engineers in this recording. Listen to this, and you’ll be reminded of the Czech Philharmonic’s glory days in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was one of the few institutions in the country not under grim Soviet control. Belohlávek thinks each of these dances through. He delivers crisp readings of the basic exposition of the dance rhythms, but the real fun comes as he develops the material. Each of these dances is like a little ternary symphonic movement, and that’s the way the work should be done. Sample the Slavonic Dance in F major, Op. 46, No. 4, where the minuet theme evolves into a sensitive study of register. Belohlávek will get your foot tapping in pieces like the Slavonic Dance in G minor, Op. 46, No. 8, which with its mode mixture is almost a little study for the Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, to come. But it’s in the small details that he and the musicians really shine. A superior Dvorák recording. –AllMusic Review by James Manheim

This pair of symphonies was written solely to satisfy Dvořák’s own poetic muse. In the keys of G major and its relative minor, E minor, they can be regarded as representing two sides of the same coin. The Eighth, composed in Dvořák’s summer residence at Vysoká deep in the Bohemian countryside, is indisputably “From the Old World” and rooted in Central Europe — “a work singing of the joy of green pastures, of summer evenings, of the melancholy of blue forests, of the defiant merry-making of the Czech peasants”, to quote the conductor Václav Talich, while the Ninth, composed in the claustrophobic surroundings of New York and intended as a greeting “From the New World”, is steeped in the composer’s “unappeasable yearning for his native soil”

As orchestras and conductors have been demonstrating for more than a century, you don’t have to be Bohemian to play Dvorák. All you need is profound musicality, a deep love of life, and an overwhelming urge to communicate. These are all qualities that Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra demonstrate in full in this 2000 Channel Classics recording of the composer’s Eighth and Ninth symphonies. In these performances, one hears not only edge-of-the-chair excitement from the Hungarian musicians, one hears joy, happiness, and good old-fashioned fun. Listen to the rollicking horn trills in the Eighth’s Finale, the thundering timpani in the Ninth’s Scherzo; the interplay between winds, strings, and brass in the coda of the Eighth’s Scherzo; the lush string tone in the Ninth’s Largo; the headlong rush of the Eighth’s opening Allegro con brio; or the awesome power of the Ninth’s closing Allegro con fuoco. Although there are dozens of great recordings of both these works, these performances deserve to be heard by anyone who loves life, love, and joy. While the digital sound is a bit thin, it is also very clear, very clean, and very, very colorful. –AllMusic Review by James Leonard

Elena Rozanova created the Rachmaninov Piano Trio in 1998 with Svetlin Roussev and Andrej Melik to perform at the prestigious International Chamber Music Competition in Melbourne in 1999. They were awarded the prize for best interpretation of a contemporary piece. The Trio had already impressed various directors of European festivals, during the preliminary trials in Paris.
They performed during various musical seasons, for example at the Midis Musicaux du Théâtre du Châtelet. After the concert they gave at La Roque d’Anthéron, L’Humanité wrote “with the arrival of this new Trio, the Wanderers and Guarneri will have to push themselves!” In January 2005, François Salque joined the Trio because Andrej Melik’s career in Germany had become too demanding. The trio changed its name to Roussev/Salque/Rozanova Trio.
Between 1993 and 1998, Svetlin Roussev was awarded more than ten prizes in international competitions and played with many orchestras such as the Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis. He gave recitals in China, South Corea, Taiwan as well as in Europe and the United States. Svetlin Roussev is concert solo of the Orchestre de Radio France and teaches at the CSNM in Paris.
Runner-up in many international competitions such as Lausanne (first prize unanimously), Munich, Geneva, Tchaikovsky, François Salque was awarded the most important prizes ever given to a French cellist in these competitions. For five years, he was part of the Ysaÿe Quartet but left them in December 2004. He plays regularly with artists such as Jean-Claude Pennetier, Brigitte Engerer, Barry Douglas, Itamar Golan, Emmanuel Pahud, Alexandre Tharaud… –Enrique Llamas

It is telling that Somebody Like Me, one of the blandest middle-of-the-road pop records Eddy Arnold made in the ’60s, was also one of his most commercially successful. Its strong sales performance explains why the so-called Tennessee Plowboy came to make such an abundance of easy listening records: a lot of people were buying them. There are several good songs, but the sweet, languid arrangements lack the moodiness and atmospherics of his best easy listening records. The limp interpretation of Bill Anderson’s “The Tips of My Fingers” was a number three hit, and “Somebody Like Me” spent a month at number one. The appearance of “Lay Some Happiness on Me” a year before either Dean Martin or Bobby Wright had a hit with it is notable, but chart status notwithstanding, Somebody Like Me is not one of Arnold’s strongest albums.

This 1971 recording is something special – no chordal instruments, no horns, four Americans and one Cuban performing traditional African and Afro-Cuban pieces in a live spiritual ritual of drumming, chants, and song. Known for his work with Woody Shaw and Eddie Harris, American percussionist Billy Brooks moved to Europe in 1964, where he has played with the likes of Tete Montoliu and Dusko Goykovich. The African-rooted El Babaku is the group’s theme song, with Brooks playing bass block flute and leading the call and response. Orisha, a traditional Nigerian song of the Yoruba, is a vocation to the gods. Brooks’ jazz drumming and interplay reflects the African heritage that runs through jazz. Aino Buca is a traditional Cuban piece given to the group by Tete Montolu’s Cuban wife. Cuban conga player Carlos Santa Cruz, a friend and student of the legendary Cuban conga player Chano Pozo, takes over most of the ritualistic chants while Brooks concentrates on bamboo flute, singing through the instrument ala Roland Kirk. Al Hajj Malik Al Shabbazz has Brooks honoring Malcom X’s memory. Here, as in other pieces, the bass functions as a drone, much like the rababab in Arabic music. Lament, a Nigerian song of mourning and loneliness, functions like a jazz ballad for voice and drums. El Lupe Chango celebrates the Yoruban god Chango who reigns over the world with lightning and thunder. Carlos sings with Brooks on the African dun-dun and traps. Brooks says it best; “The ecstasy I get in music comes from group drumming. It’s more than musical – it’s spiritual.”

Arriving three years after The Take Off and Landing of Everything — a span of time that also saw leader Guy Garvey taking a busman’s holiday with Courting the Squall — Little Fictions showcases a different but eminently recognizable Elbow. Seven albums into their career, Elbow remain a deliberate, contemplative group — that’s part of their DNA — but Little Fictions feels optimistic, particularly when it’s compared to the elegiac The Take Off and Landing of Everything. Where that album dwelled on the idea of loss, Little Fictions is its counterbalance, a record about new beginnings. This shift is evident in the music, which is lighter on its surface and complex at its foundation. Elbow emphasize electronic rhythms, sometimes even conjuring a groove, yet they still find space for chiming guitars, such as “All Disco,” which sounds like R.E.M. doing their best Velvet Underground impression. All of it adds up to an album that feels quietly hopeful, making it a tonic for troubled times.

Eldissa’s long-time expected new album “Upside Down” will be released the 04.11.2016 Before 2005, Bossa Nova and Disco were different musical styles that hadn’t met. The release of “What a difference…..”, the first album of Eldissa, changed that forever. The story began when producer Adrien ‘Z’ Zerbini worked during the summer of 2003 with a soul singer and a Bossa nova guitarist focused on seamlessly melting Disco and Bossa Nova into an irresistible blend. After the worldwide success of “What a difference…..” the trend of covering almost all, and every type, of song as a Bossa Nova cover became widespread . So it has been really challenging to produce a new album based on the same motto “Disco meets Bossa Nova”, but here it is, and it’s good! Adrien worked with the guitarist and arranger Ignacio Lamas (aka “Magic Touch”) and 3 amazing singers with 3 different types of voice: Sylvie Bourban (aka Jazzy), Mafé (aka Spicy) and Licia Chery (aka Sunny). “All the musicians have a strong identity, a soul, and a special light in the way they play”, adds Adrien, “this album is more complete and more sober than the first one, and everything has been recorded in high resolution (96/24) which creates an incredible clarity”. The album has been mixed by Yvan Bing (mixing credits includes Gilberto Gil and Phil Collins), in both stereo, as well as 5.1 channel for the audiophile SACD format.

Lively, ambitious, almost entirely successful debut album, made up of keyboard-dominated instrumentals (“The Barbarian,” “Three Fates”) and romantic ballads (“Lucky Man”) showcasing all three members’ very daunting talents. This album, which reached the Top 20 in America and got to number four in England, showcased the group at its least pretentious and most musicianly — with the exception of a few moments on “Three Fates” and perhaps “Take a Pebble,” there isn’t much excess, and there is a lot of impressive musicianship here. “Take a Pebble” might have passed for a Moody Blues track of the era but for the fact that none of the Moody Blues’ keyboard men could solo like Keith Emerson. Even here, in a relatively balanced collection of material, the album shows the beginnings of a dark, savage, imposingly gothic edge that had scarcely been seen before in so-called “art rock,” mostly courtesy of Emerson’s larger-than-life organ and synthesizer attacks. Greg Lake’s beautifully sung, deliberately archaic “Lucky Man” had a brush with success on FM radio, and Carl Palmer became the idol of many thousands of would-be drummers based on this one album (especially for “Three Fates” and “Tank”), but Emerson emerged as the overpowering talent here for much of the public.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s 1970 eponymous LP was only a rehearsal. It hit hard because of the novelty of the act (allegedly the first supergroup in rock history), but felt more like a collection of individual efforts and ideas than a collective work. All doubts were dissipated by the release of Tarkus in 1971. Side one of the original LP is occupied by the 21-minute title epic track, beating both Genesis’ “Supper’s Ready” and Yes’ “Close to the Edge” by a year. Unlike the latter group’s cut-and-paste technique to obtain long suites, “Tarkus” is a thoroughly written, focused piece of music. It remains among the Top Ten classic tracks in progressive rock history. Because of the strength of side one, the material on the album’s second half has been quickly forgotten — with one good reason: it doesn’t match the strength of its counterpart — but “Bitches Crystal” and “A Time and a Place” make two good prog rock tracks, the latter being particularly rocking. “Jeremy Bender” is the first in a series of honky tonk-spiced, Far-West-related songs. This one and the rock & roll closer “Are You Ready Eddy?” are the only two tracks worth throwing away. Otherwise Tarkus makes a very solid album, especially to the ears of prog rock fans — no Greg Lake acoustic ballads, no lengthy jazz interludes. More accomplished than the trio’s first album, but not quite as polished as Brain Salad Surgery, Tarkus is nevertheless a must-have.
