Experience the transcendent glory of Messiah in Sir Andrew Davis’s new, majestic, must-hear edition of Handel’s beloved classic.
Recorded live for SACD release in surround sound, this unique version makes use of all the colours available from the modern symphony orchestra to underline the mood and meaning of the individual movements. Without detracting from the innate power of the original, the conductor’s score calls for moments of drama, pathos, and even, sometimes, whimsicality. It is supported by substantial brass and woodwind forces, and several percussion instruments (including marimba!).
As he explains in a very personal booklet note, this leading British conductor brings immense dedication to what is probably the most famous piece of British sacred music ever composed, this version being one which he has conducted live only a few times, including on this recording. He confesses: ‘Everything I have done instrumentally stems from the enormous respect, even awe, which I feel towards this supreme masterpiece’.

Harmen Fraanje Quartet feat. Nelson Veras – Sonatala (2004)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 59:29 minutes | 1,12 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | Booklet, Front Cover | © Challenge Records Int.
Recorded: Studio LeRoy, Amsterdam on February 10 and 11, 2003

The quartet of Harmen Fraanje was founded in the summer of 2002.Hein Van de Geyn invited the musicians to his theater where they spent an extraordinary week together. The music of Harmen found a miraculous medium in this group. The phenomenal brazilian guitarist Nelson Veras was able to add just that magic colour to the already sparkling sound of the piano trio. Nelson Veras, who already as a teenager toured with people like Pat Metheny,Aldo Romano, Gary Peacock, Michel Petrucciani, grew into one of the most promising guitarists in the world. His fabulous technique and effortless musicality are truly amazing. Hein Van de Geyn is a well known and seasoned bassist. His 20 year long experience give him the ability to push the group from his place in the back to extraordinary heights. His flexibility and sense of improvisation give a special colour to the group. Drummer Matthieu Chazarenc is at this point one of the young lions of the Paris Jazz scene that is most in demand. He only arrived on the scene a few years ago. His intense polyrhythmical way of playing is an exciting factor within the sound of the band. The music of this extraordinary quartet has a power and simplicity that hits the listener in a very direct way. Within the refreshing, clear compositions breathtaking improvisation takes place. As one of the most promising upcoming quartets we wantedto fully support the beautiful sound of the band with the best quality format.Challenge therefore decided to release this album as a hybrid surround SACD only.

This fascinating quartet consists of three talented young musicians, pianist Harmen Fraanje, guitarist Nelson Veras, and drummer Matthieu Chazarenc, as well as seasoned veteran Hein Van De Geyn on bass. While only the bassist is likely to be familiar to most savvy jazz fans, the compositions, most of which were written by Fraanje, draw from several fields of music. The title track has a Middle Eastern flavor in the vamp sections, though it quickly segues into a quiet jazz setting. “Nanne” begins with a gorgeous solo improvisation by Fraanje and transforms into a brief meditative ballad. The funky rhythm of “Mokka” suggests a blend of New Orleans jazz and post-bop, retaining the humor of the former style and the adventurous modern spirit of the latter. “Paris Song” is a lighthearted waltz, while “Winter” has a bit of a melancholy air. The sound of this hybrid Super Audio CD adds to the enjoyment of this delightful date. –AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden

Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905-1963) is one of the most significant but least-known symphonic composers of the 20th century. This set of three hybrid SACDs, issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the German composer’s death, features his eight symphonies played by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and Chamber Philharmonic Orchestras under the batons of several major conductors, including Christoph Poppen, Osmo Vanska, James Gaffigan and Markus Stenz.
One of the most characteristic features of Hartmann’s work is the way in which he forges contrasting stylistic elements and techniques from various periods of music history into a seamless unit. Moreover, one melody is found in all his symphonies, concealed to varying degrees. This melody is based on the Jewish song “Elijahu hanavi” about the prophet Elijah, whom the Jews anxiously await to bring them redemption. This yearning quality lies at the heart of the composer’s music.
Two types of movement, adagio and scherzo, form the unmistakable axis of Hartmann’s symphonic works, and the result is that the musical discourse continually takes place between expansion and energy, monumental stasis and a dynamic primal force toppling everything in its path. Hartmann’s symphonic legacy most certainly deserves its rightful place in the canon, especially in English-speaking countries where it’s been often overlooked.

The London Haydn Quartet turns to the six Op 50 quartets. More serious—intellectually taut—than the Op 33 ‘Russian’ quartets which they follow in Haydn’s output, these six ‘Prussian’ quartets dazzle in such committed performances as these.

Published in 1787 and dedicated to the cello-playing King of Prussia, the six Op 50 Quartets comprise some of Haydn’s most obsessive achievements in the art of making much from little—of drawing the most varied structures, inventions, textures and feelings from the most limited thematic material. The serenely animated opening Allegro of Op 50 No 1 unfolds from little more than a throbbing bass and a tiny cliché turn, while the principle idea of the witty finale of No 6 is no more than a single note reiterated on alternate strings—a sound that has gained the work the nick name of the ‘Frog Quartet’.
Haydn constrained himself still further in No 4 by opting for F sharp minor, an obscure key, exceptionally perilous to string intonation, that makes for an uneasy mood of suppressed emotions. Not, of course, that Catherine Manson and her three colleagues of the London String Quartet have any problems with the tuning here, though they cannot quite avoid a slight roughness of timbre in this difficult key, which was probably Haydn’s intention in choosing it.
For the rest, gut strings and paucity of vibrato notwithstanding, they play with all the radiant resonance of timbre of their previous release in this on-going Haydn series. Maybe the opening movement of No 2 is a little too beautiful to articulate all its cut and thrust; maybe the outer movements of No 3 are a bit too hasty and throwaway. But there is never a dull moment, and the recording is of answering immediacy and bloom. –Bayan Northcottб BBC Music Magazine

The London Haydn Quartet reaches the six great quartets published in 1788 as Opp 54 & 55 in another unmissable two-for-the-price-of-one set. Is it possible to have too much Haydn? The only sensible answer is ‘no’, especially when the music is performed with such intelligence and humanity as here.

Haydn wrote the six quartets of Opp 54 and 55 in 1788, by now a celebrated composer across Europe and still opera Kapellmeister at Esterházy. These period instrument players, whose very name declares their affinity for Haydn, excel in the latest in their Hyperion series. Ever spry in fast movements, faultless in dexterity and intonation, they find a special warmth of feeling in the slower moments: the songful Adagio Cantabile of Op 55 No 1, the puzzling, melancholy Andante of Op 55 No 2, the dark, hymn-like first bars of Op 54 No 2’s Adagio, out of which the violin soars in almost improvised, bluesy reverie. Too many pleasures to enumerate. Try for yourself. –Fiona Maddocksб The Guardian

–Salvatore Esposito

Recorded: Symphony Hall, Birmingham; 8 and 9 August 2016

For its very first album on Chandos, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain devotes its characteristic energy and musical mastery to an explosive programme that transcends daily life and earthly experience. It is helped by the enthusiastic, encouraging, and experienced baton of Edward Gardner as well as by the sumptuous yet detailed acoustic of Symphony Hall, Birmingham, all fully revealed in this surround-sound recording.
Their performance of Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra and Holst’s The Planets is already a point of reference in the UK after the immensely successful Prom concert that preceded the recording. The concert’s five-star review in The Daily Telegraph praised in particular the orchestra’s ‘great attack and complete absence of anything routine’, while The Guardian emphasised the great performance of the orchestra in this ‘graceful and evocative programme’, especially the ‘depth and richness of sound that belied their youth’.
This unique album is a first milestone in what promises to be a superb discography for the NYO.

Soprano sorceress Isabel Bayrakdarian, acclaimed internationally for her glittering accomplishments on both stage and screen, presents – in this hypnotically alluring album of Armenian sacred music – a more spiritual aspect of her multifaceted musical persona.

Isabel conceived this project as a heartfelt gift to God for sparing the life of her mother, and the entire album is very much a “family affair.” Her husband arranged the pieces, her brother plays the ceremonial percussion instruments, and her two sisters join her to form a vocal trio in several tracks.

This spellbinding music – scored variously for solo and ensemble voices, cello and women’s choir – will take its fortunate listeners on a deeply spiritual and meditative journey of the soul.

For this third volume in an Ives series that Sir Andrew Davis and his Melbourne Orchestra have already made globally popular, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet takes on the challenge of the solo piano part in Symphony No. 4.
The work is famous for its ubiquitous difficulties, not least the apparent impossibility of realising many of the composer’s creative intentions in a live performance, as evidenced by the forty pages of background discussion and practical advice to conductors that introduce the published score.
It is complemented by the less-often-performed triptych Orchestral Set No. 2 and the Pulitzer Prize winning Symphony No. 3.
Recorded in Surround Sound in Melbourne just after a ‘remarkable, very welcome’ (Sydney Morning Herald) performance in concert of the same programme by the same forces, this album is a must-have for anyone who wants to experience this monumental music under optimal conditions.

Recorded: March 1971–October 1971

Stax Records, a division of Concord Bicycle Music, is proud to announce the remastering and reissue of 12 seminal titles by soul music icon Isaac Hayes. The collection, which includes Hayes’ best-loved studio albums, soundtracks and live recordings, spanning 1969 – 1976, was remastered entirely from the original analog tapes. 11 of these albums, including Shaft, Black Moses and Hot Buttered Soul, are now available in 192/24 and 96/24 hi resolution audio formats, while all 12 of the titles have been Mastered For iTunes, and can be found on Isaac Hayes’ new iTunes artist page. Hi-res formats will be available on HDTracks.
Award-winning engineer Dave Cooley (M83, J-Dilla, Madlib, Serge Gainsbourg, Jimmy Eat World) was commissioned to take on the project at his Los Angeles-based studio, Elysian Masters. Cooley explains, “Every effort was undertaken to retain both the original production team’s intent, and the most natural and truthful spatial imaging of Isaac’s voice and instrumentation.” He adds, “For the first time you can plainly hear details as small as the subtle coloration variations between the original studio setups and tape formulations from album to album. There’s renewed resolution around instruments. But you can also dive into the zoned-out atmospherics, and listen comfortably for hours as an entire body of work.” Cooley’s meticulous work has breathed new life into these classic tracks; his enthusiasm for the project palpable. He recalls, “There was an immense pressure to get it right. Having grown up transcribing the very piano licks and grooves that were sampled by such hip hop luminaries as Public Enemy and others, I was well acquainted with Isaac’s legacy as a revolutionary enigma spanning multiple generations. Remastering the catalog was a call to re-ignite that with even more transparency and a deeper pulse for the next group of listeners.”
GRAMMY® and Academy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer and actor Isaac Hayes (1942-2008) revolutionized soul music, experimenting with extended cuts, orchestration and concept albums during the era of 3-minute, radio-driven tracks. Hayes began his career as a songwriter and producer at Stax Records, working with partner David Porter on such iconic hits as Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man” and “Hold On! I’m Comin’.” In 1968, Hayes branched out on his own with Presenting Isaac Hayes, but it wasn’t until his follow-up a year later, Hot Buttered Soul, that the artist became a genuine star in his own right, breaking ground with his deep baritone vocals and signature sonic explorations that could take up the entire side of a record. In 1971, Hayes scored Blaxploitation film Shaft; the title theme of which went number one the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and earned the artist an Academy Award and multiple GRAMMY® awards. Later that year, he released his critically-acclaimed double album, Black Moses. Hayes continued to write and record throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s, scoring several more films, and continuing to push himself artistically. In 1997, the artist gained a new generation of fans as he voiced the character of Chef on the long-running cartoon series South Park. Nearly a decade after his death, Isaac Hayes’ legacy as a multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, writer, and artist continues to inspire and influence new listeners.

The sheer tenacity — albeit undeniably fitting — of this double-disc set has made Black Moses (1971) one of Isaac Hayes’ most revered and best-known works. The multi-instrumental singer/songwriter and producer had been a central figure in the Memphis soul music revolution of the mid-’60s. Along with Booker T. & the MG’s, Hayes wrote and performed on more Stax sides than any other single artist. By the time of this release — his fifth overall, and first two-record set — Hayes had firmly established himself as a progressive soul artist. His stretched-out and well-developed R&B jams, as well as his husky-voiced sexy spoken “raps,” became key components in his signature sound. Black Moses not only incorporates those leitmotifs, but also reaffirms Hayes abilities as an unmistakably original arranger. Although a majority of the album consists of cover material, all the scores have been reconfigured and adapted in such a fundamental way that, for some listeners, these renditions serve as definitive. This is certainly true of the extended reworkings of Jerry Butler’s “Brand New Me” and Esther Phillips’ “You’re Love Is So Doggone Good” — both of which are prefaced by the spoken prelude to coitus found in each respective installment of “Ike’s Rap.” The pair of Curtis Mayfield tunes — “Man’s Temptation” and “Need to Belong to Someone” — are also worth noting for the layers of tastefully scored orchestration — from both Hayes and his longtime associate Johnny Allen. The pair’s efforts remain fresh and discerning, rather than the dated ersatz strings and horn sections that imitators were glutting the soul and pop charts and airwaves with in the mid-’70s. Hayes’ own composition, “Good Love,” recalls the upbeat and jive talkin’ “Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic” from Hot Buttered Soul (1969), adding some spicy and sexy double-entendre in the chorus. –AllMusic Review by Lindsay Planer

The title track employs “Shaft”-like guitar licks, but the similarity ends there: It’s a lame attempt at disco done in by Ike’s lazy singing and irritatingly banal lyrics. But it’s the LP’s only sore point. Ike returns to his roots on “Your Loving Is Much Too Strong,” a slow, romantic ballad that he and his girls, Hot Buttered Soul Unlimited, make you feel. “Rock Me Easy Baby,” a slinky, syncopated shuffle, has more groove appeal than the vaunted “Groove-A-Thon,” mainly because Ike constructs it for maximum soul appeal by running it for more than eight exquisite minutes. The uptempo happy-in-love ditty “We’ve Got a Whole Lot of Love” showcases HBS’ sterling voices. Ike shows a different side on the soft, longing “Wish You Were Here,” whose horn arrangements and backing vocals are simultaneously enticing and titillating. After a weak opening, the album settles into a comfortable groove, ending splendidly with “Make a Little Love to Me.”

Recorded: April – May, 1973

With seven massive number one records trailing in his wake, Isaac Hayes donned his stylin’, funky gold-chain link vest once again and capped 1973 with Joy, a set which might have proven the lucky-streak breaker — it missed the top spot by one place — but still waded into gold-record waters with ease. “Joy” itself, of course, was the album’s crowning glory, a gargantuan 15-minute piece which essentially devoured side one of the album (the accompanying “I Love You That’s All” is merely an afterthought). Heady, smoky, ubiquitous — an instrumental and vocal foray into the land of good grooves — it was sexy and sassy, with strings and innuendo stripped bare and smoothly built to lead anyone within earshot toward a classic climax. The song continued to impact via sampled revitalization from as far afield as TLC, Massive Attack, Eric B. & Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane. But don’t forget that Joy is an entire album, with Hayes continuing his silky vocal assault across a further three slow, simmering songs. The best, and perhaps most interesting, is the closing “I’m Gonna Make It (Without You).” Markedly un-steamy, the song finds Hayes trading in his come-ons, choosing instead to open up and lay himself down in the wake of a broken romance. It’s Joy’s most touching moment, equally on par with the opener. Indeed, with those two glorious bookends, this album becomes a must-have for any ’70s soul aficionado.

One of Isaac Hayes’ richest soundtracks – deeper and more complicated than the groove of Shaft and Truck Turner, and filled with some great tunes that glow with color, life, and imagination – showing an Isaac Hayes that almost seems to be moving beyond the usual blackploitation groove! The album sports 2 really classic tunes – the title theme “Tough Guys“, and the classic “Hung Up On My Baby” – both of which have a solidly funky feel that will more than please the usual soundtrack beathead crowd. But overall, the other tunes twist and turn in a delightful mix of modes – expanding on the soulful territory Ike first explored in his original soundtracks, and offering up a great range of moods and emotion. The album’s got some especially great chromatic guitar work – and other titles include “Joe Bell”, “Randolph & Dearborn”, “Buns O Plenty”, “Run Fay Run”, and “Red Rooster”.

This soundtrack was considerably lengthier and more varied than the one Hayes had released earlier in 1974 (Tough Guys), including Holiday Inn funk, a lugubrious vocal (“You’re in My Arms Again”), and some jazz and blues riffs peppering the instrumental grooves. While the length ensured more variety, though, it also makes it a challenge to sit through the hour-plus program when you don’t have images to fit the music.

Recorded: March – April 1970

Although this is Isaac Hayes’ third long-player, he had long been a staple of the Memphis R&B scene — primarily within the Stax coterie — where his multiple talents included instrumentalist, arranger, and composer of some of the most beloved soul music of the ’60s. Along with his primary collaborator, David Porter, Hayes was responsible for well over 200 sides — including the genre-defining “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby,” “Soul Man,” “B-A-B-Y,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” and “I Had a Dream.” As a solo artist however, Hayes redefined the role of the long-player with his inimitably smooth narrative style of covering classic pop and R&B tracks, many of which would spiral well over ten minutes. The Isaac Hayes Movement (1970) includes four extended cuts from several seemingly disparate sources, stylistically ranging from George Harrison’s “Something” to Jerry Butler’s “I Stand Accused” and even Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself.” These early Hayes recordings brilliantly showcase his indomitable skills as an arranger — as he places familiar themes into fresh contexts and perspectives. For example, his lengthy one-sided dialogue that prefaces “I Stand Accused” is halting in its candor as Hayes depicts an aching soul who longs for his best friend’s fiancée. Even the most hard-hearted can’t help but have sympathy pains as he unravels his sordid emotional agony and anguish. Hayes’ lyrical orchestration totally reinvents the structure of “Something” — which includes several extended instrumental sections — incorporating equally expressive contributions from John Blair (violin). Both “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself” and the comparatively short (at under six minutes) “One Big Unhappy Family” are more traditionally arranged ballads. Hayes again tastefully incorporates both string and horn sections to augment the languid rhythm, providing contrasting textures rather than gaudy adornment. These sides offer a difference between the proverbial “Black Moses of Soul” persona that would be responsible for the aggressive no-nonsense funk of Shaft (1971) and Truck Turner (1974).
