The National – Boxer Live in Brussels (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 48:44 minutes | 540 MB | Genre: Indie Rock, Alternative
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © 4AD

GRAMMY-winning band The National are pleased to announce a CD version of their very special Record Store Day release – a live recording of their seminal album, Boxer. On November 9th, 2017, The National wrapped up their European tour by performing the album in its entirety, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Boxer’s debut.

Formed in 1999, The National is composed of Matt Berninger, the Dessnet brothers and the Devendorf brothers. In 2007, the band from Ohio released one of their greatest albums, the fourth: Boxer. Eleven years later, they bring it back into the spotlight with this live recorded in Brussels and perform the entirety of the disc. But yielding to increasing demands, The National also opted for an official release. Faithful to the first version, the band keeps almost the same visual for the cover, a picture of them on stage at the wedding of producer Peter Katis. The quintet perfectly perform here from beginning to end, for a faithful and responsive audience. Opening with Fake Empire, a small musical prowess of which we like the destructured aspect, mainly in the association of pop keyboards playing off-beat with Berninger’s voice. An obvious alchemy with Brainy on which the guitars, the bass and the drum perfectly harmonize in some kind of musical discussion. Up to the last track Gospel, there is some sort of hypnotic charm at play, notably thanks to the contrast of this deep voice on a light and intense melody.  – Anna Coluthe

Tracklist:

Sing For The Day! showcases Styx guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s rousing 2016 solo turn with the Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra, under the direction of principal conductor/founder Liza Grossman. Alongside guitarist/musical director Will Evankovich and backed by the next generation of the finest high-school-aged musicians in Ohio, Shaw also celebrates the tenth anniversary of Styx’s triumphant 2006 One With Everything performance with the CYO. Here, the CYO & Chorus bring new life to many classic band and solo tracks in front of an enthusiastic audience at the intimate Waetjen Auditorium in Cleveland, including “Blue Collar Man,” “Girls With Guns,” “High Enough,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” “Crystal Ball” (featuring the debut of its never-recorded lost verse), and most especially “Renegade,” highlighted by an epic guitar/violin duel between Shaw and a noted CYO alum. “It was so much bigger and more everlasting than any of us imagined it would be,” marvels Shaw – now see and hear just how magical Sing was for yourself.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 46:46 minutes | 520 MB | Genre: Country
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Smithsonian Folkways Recordings

John Duffey’s influence on bluegrass cannot be overstated. His contributions to legendary bands The Country Gentlemen and The Seldom Scene helped transform the genre from a regional Appalachian music to a sophisticated, urban sound, resulting in a legion of new fans the world over. On Epilogue, the bluegrass music community comes together to create a marvelously fitting tribute to “the father of modern bluegrass.” Sam Bush, John Cowan, Bela Fleck, Bruce Molsky, Tim O’Brien, Don Rigsby, and so many more it’s a rare and special all-star cast. Their eagerness and passion to record the album attest to how profoundly Duffey impacted them and countless other musicians today.

It’s already been over twenty years since John Duffey, one of the best bluegrass and folk musicians, passed away. Having become an icon and a source of inspiration for many artists, the album Epilogue: A Tribute to John Duffey was a long awaited tribute. The lone tenor with his unique and innovative mandolin technique successfully managed to make bluegrass more popular and approachable. A founding member of the bands The Country Gentlemen and The Seldom Scene, he won over many hearts with his musical style and pulled off a true artistic transmission. Released on the label Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the album features a myriad of talents to give a second life to John Duffey and the bluegrass he loved so. Lou Reid and Randy Waller start it off with Sad and Lonesome Day, enthusiastically accompanied by the banjo and guitar. The whole piece is just one surprise after another, with contributions from the likes of Amanda Smith, Jonathan Edwards, Dudley Connell, and Tim O’Brien. It breathes the fragrances of America, with traditional country music tuned to more contemporary voices in great classics like If I Were a Carpenter or the unrecognizable Girl from the North Country, interpreted by Steve Gulley. The languid and melancholic ballad of Cash and Dylan has morphed under the sway of the banjo and mandolin as Bruce Molsky plays around on Chim-Chim-Cher-Ee. Then the old friends close out this tribute. John Starling, a former member of Seldom Scene, is mesmerizing when he tells the story of Mary with his strings and accompanied by a choir on the ballad Bringing Mary Home. An album that ends with Akira Otsuka’s mandolin solo that brings a reverent hearing for a perfect homage to John Duffey.  – Clara Bismuth

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 01:55:22 minutes | 1,11 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Verve

No need to go back to the various faces displayed by Leonard Bernstein, conductor, composer, educator, presenter, writer, etc. Like Gershwin, Bernstein has tackled all musical genres and has also influenced them himself! To the point that his music has become some sort of American soundtrack, from Broadway to pop to jazz. Talking about jazz. In the middle of the celebration of Bernstein’s centenary, the label Decca offers to compile the love of the greatest musicians and singers of yesterday and today for the art of the author of West Side Story. The interest of this Jazz Loves Bernsteinmostly lies in the gathering of classics and less-known pieces. From Billie Holliday in Big Stuff (from Fancy Free) to Diana Krall and Mark Whitfield for Some Other Time (from the musical On the Town), the spectrum is quite large. You will find here gems such as Tonightfrom West Side Story performed with much warmth by Billy Eckstine, or, from the same work, Maria and I Feel Pretty magnified by Sarah Vaughan. Other big names like Oliver Nelson, Oscar Peterson in trio, Bobby Scott, Eric Reed, Mel Tormé, Carmen McRae, Bill Charlap, Maynard Ferguson and Bob James cover in their own way songs and themes that have entered the American Heritage to appropriate them. Just like Lucky To Be Me, performed by Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund helped by pianist Bill Evans.  – Marc Zisman

Formed in 1968 in Kent, England, the band is probably best remembered for the hit songs “Early In the Morning” and “Hitchin’ A Ride”, which both became gold in the USA and reached the Top Ten. “Hitchin A Ride” actually became a hippy anthem and dance craze. Going against the heavy acid rock trend of the late sixties with their brilliant melodies and harmonic singing, the band, still active today, is one of the true forgotten gems of the era.

Frisson Sextet, the second album from the saxophonist/composer Vernau Mier, is an introspective work summarizing his personal experiences during the last months in Barcelona before starting a new chapter in Switzerland. It is through his compositions that he reflects on the experience of being detached from a place and a life and migrating to an unknown place. Looking forward to new opportunities with the freedom to explore new frontiers while dealing with the frisson caused by the beginning of a new life.

Frisson Sextet merges different sounds of the jazz tradition, from a straight-ahead approach to free-jazz and odd meters. Although the arranged parts have a lot of importance on an ensemble like this, the improvisation and interaction are very present in almost every second.

Wet – Still Run (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/48 kHz | Time – 40:41 minutes | 485 MB | Genre: Indie Pop
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia

Still Run is the new album from Brooklyn, NY based alternative band Wet, and is the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed debut album Don’t You from 2016. Still Run shows Wet with a more upbeat and pop driven sound than their debut. The band’s new sound and new outlook, is informed by lead singer and songwriter Kelly Zutrau taking more creative control of the project. Much of Wet’s shift stems from Zutrau’s more forceful vocals, which allow her direct, yet poetic lyrics to resonate more deeply, and which leap out of the sunnier production. Producers like Rostam (Haim, Solange), Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief), and John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A.) assisted primary producer and Wet band member Joe Valle, who brings a new comfort level to his production style, presenting dark lyrics in a brighter way that highlights their innate intensity and lets Zutrau’s songwriting shine. “There are a million ways to make a good song sound good,” she says. “But what matters to me most in the end are the vocal, and the songwriting, and whatever serves those best.” Wet is recognized for their deeply-hued emotional pop, well documented by the New York Times, Spin, and NPR among many others. Rolling Stone noted that Wet “set themselves apart with music that combines the elegant ache of Nineties R&B with the raw honesty of indie pop…”. Still Run is a testament to taking that control and pursuing one’s artistic vision and it also shows how any hiccups that might crop up along the way can make the vision’s eventual realization more satisfying.

If you are unfamiliar with the NFO sound, these Swedes cherish a decade in musical history between about 1975 and 1985. It is impossible to avoid that they are intentionally derivative, proudly brandishing their classic rock influences such that half of the fun is identifying which band inspired particular parts. For my year-end summary of Amber Galactic, I noted Toto, Van Halen, Billy Joel, Steely Dan, Journey and Whitesnake. These same bands are still in the melting pot but SWAE is definitely less heavy and guitar-driven than previously. The guitars, while good, are moved another row further back in the bus, while the keyboards move forwards yet again. It is disingenuous to call it ‘disco’ as I’ve seen it described in our internal channels, but I also appreciate that NFO stray ever-further from their metal-oriented day jobs2. To demonstrate this point, two additional bands can be thrown into the pot: ABBA and the Bee Gees, both of whom can be heard on the more disco-heavy tracks, such as “Paralyzed,” “Pretty Thing Closing In” and “Winged and Serpentine.”

But what is it that means your should curtail your concerns? What is it that has always made NFO such a success? The songs, the songs, the songs. It still staggers me that the same individuals who can write such bland melodeath can also write such incredibly catchy tunes for this project. As enjoyable as SWAE is across its duration, it is usual for a few tracks to rise to the top and that holds true here. “Turn to Miami” and the title track are pure 80s pop-rock magic with huge choruses that show off the talented backup singers that the band now employs. I have read “Moments of Thunder” compared with the finale to the opening act of musical theatre which is apt; it’s bombastic and over-the-top, even by NFO‘s ridiculous standards. And “Lovers in the Rain” is the obligatory ballad which wrings our every ounce of melodrama from its emotive guitar lines and soppy lyrics. While it isn’t as awesome as its equivalents from Internal Affairs and Skyline Whispers, I also want to mention the long-form closer called “The Last of the Independent Romantics” with its moodier introduction, great riffs in its second passage and relative complexity in its second half. I enjoy when these guys stretch their song-writing a little and was disappointed by the effort from Amber Galactic.

So-called entertainment or light music tends to carry a negative connotation these days. For many, it would seem that achieving overnight success and making loads of money are on a par with easy music, preferably performed by musicians in very smart attire. But that certainly hasn’t always been the case. Indeed, Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and, of course, the Strauss family — to name but a few great composers — whose music belongs to the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra’s repertoire, could provide audiences of their day with plenty of exciting, entertaining fare with their contradances, lndlers, waltzes and quodlibets to which people danced, laughed and drank. Mastering this aspect of composition was an aart for such masters.
The main difference with much of today’s popular music is perhaps that, in the past, superficiality was not necessarily a prerequisite. The same holds true for NedSym Lite. After our concert performances featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann and Wagner, for instance, why not enjoy NedSym Lite? Performed with such skill, mastery and success! We simply couldn’t resist sharing all this with you on a CD…

The operas of Joseph Haydn are far less known today than those of his contemporaries Christoph Willibald von Gluck (1714 — 1787) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 -1791). In 1790 Haydn was generally considered the most famous composer of his age, but the relative obscurity of his operas in comparison with his other works today was also the case in the 18th century. How is it possible that Haydn’s operas are still relatively unknown, despite a remark Empress Maria Theresia expressed upon hearing Haydn’s L’ Infeldelta Delusa in 1773; “If I want to hear good opera, I am going to Esterhaza!”

Between 1761 and 1790 Haydn was in the employment of Prince Paul von Esterhazy and his son and successor Prince Nikolaus, both passionate music lovers. From 1766 onwards, Haydn wrote, in addition to composing chamber music and symphonies, four Italian comedies, six German Singspiele and numerous Italian operas for his employers of the Esterhazy dynasty. Furthermore he also supervised all musical activities at the court including yearly performances of more than 150 operas, many composed by his contemporaries. As Kapellmeister Haydn was not only responsible for musical direction of the operas but also for staging, contracting the singers and occasionally writing an extra aria as required, like the aria “Quando la rosa”. This aria was included in the performance of Guiseppe Anfossi’s opera La Metilde Ritrovata (1773).

Have you ever heard of Jean-Baptiste Guirod, Giullaume Ross-Despraux or Eugne Prvost? Apart from Prvost, perhaps, they have mostly been consigned to the depths of oblivion. But these were composers who won the coveted Prix de Rome, an award that had been instituted by Napoleon himself in 1803, in the period from 1827 to 1829. And in doing so, they whipped the prize right out from under the nose of Berlioz, who had competed for it just as often as they had. It might offer Berlioz some — posthumous — solace to know that he was in excellent company; Ravel, Debussy and Bizet were also to be denied the prize. The judging system for the prize, which offered little scope for groundbreaking composers, has come in for severe criticism over the years. In the words of Edgar Varse, the prize ‘produced so much insipid fruit that nowadays we can barely even remember their names’. It was Berlioz himself, in his highly readable and entertaining autobiography, who explained all about the prize’s requirements and what the prize itself involved. The winner received an allowance for five years, but this was on condition that he would spend the first two years at the Acadmie de France in Rome, use the third year for travelling through Germany and survive the remaining two years ‘doing what he could to promote himself and avoid dying from hunger’ in Paris.

Before winning the prize in 1830 with the fairly scholastic cantata La mort de Sardanapale, Berlioz had already submitted attempts in the form of La mort d’Orphe (1827), Herminie (1828) and La mort de Cloptre (1829). In 1827, his Mort d’Orphe had been condemned as unplayable by the pianist who had to perform the piano reduction — one of the jury’s requirements. Berlioz seems to have been slightly more successful in the following year: the piano version of Herminie was admittedly playable, but the work was outstripped by the submission made by Ross-Despraux and only came second. The cantata Herminie would survive, however, not least because Berlioz derived the ide fixe from his Symphonie Fantastique from the work. The cantata, to a text by Pierre-Ange Vieillard, was inspired by Tasso’s ‘Gerusalemme liberata’. This was an epic set during the Crusades, recounting the tale of the Christian knight Tancredi and his love for the Muslim warrior Clorinda. In the passage set by Berlioz, the central figure is Princess Erminia of Antioch, who was also in love with Tancredi. She leaves Jerusalem — dressed in Clorinda’s armour — to aid Tancredi, who has been wounded following a duel with the Muslim knight Argantes

“What is particularly amazing about the Mendelssohn symphonies is the fact that he is both harking back to old masters like Bach, and, as a child of his time, looking ahead. Especially his Italian and Scottish symphonies are pointing at the future, since, in my opinion, Mendelssohn lived in the era of discovery, of the Wanderer. Goethe came up with his young Werther, a guy who went away to discover the world and upon returning nothing looked the same. It’s a bit like the Wanderer in the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich: the sea, the valley, the hills, the light — everything looked new, fresh and different. Mendelssohn was such a Wanderer. He had read Goethe, so he travelled a lot. He went to Scotland, Italy and England where he absorbed the newness of it all. And that is exactly what you can hear in his music: astonishment, translated into music using harmonies we knew but which in his hands sounded completely fresh and new. Having said that, you can also hear an old-school musical approach. Mendelssohn sometimes uses fugues or chorales we know from older styles. He was the first to bring back those trustworthy techniques — and that, in itself, was also new. He took those techniques on a journey and that i that his music isn’t being played more often. There are Beethoven, Brahms or Schumann programs all over the place, but where is Mendelssohn? Let me repeat: where is Mendelssohn?”

No language has the words to describe the essence of Schubert’s deepest musical outpourings. Probably the greatest tribute is paid to music of this quality not by talking about it, but by listening to it. Listening, not once, but many times; not with half an ear, but not too analytically either: listening in astonishment and with an open mind. Even so, a bit of commentary can sometimes be helpful, if only to place a work in its context. The environment, in the form of time and space, is always the breeding ground for every work of art. If we say “a tree is known by its fruit”, it is interesting to take a closer look at the tree.

What tree produced a fruit like Schubert?

In the early nineteenth century, when Schubert was growing up and living in Vienna, the personal emotions of a poet (or composer, writer, painter) were of growing importance. At the same time as it was moving towards individual expression, art was still clearly leaning on its strong ‘classical’ foundations, the achievements of the late eighteenth century — but the borders had been shifted, towards monumental stature and towards small-scale intimacy (compare Beethoven’s development of the symphony and the string quartet to the many jewels of art songs written by his contemporaries, with Schubert leading the way). In short, from the waves of this renewal arose what we now know as romantic art, with its diverse range of emotions, now intensified, now held back…
