It was only when he reached Naples in April 1831 — after almost a year of his journey — that Italy began to seep its way into Mendelssohn’s music. Naples also called a halt to the pleasures of travelling. The weather was dreadful, with continual rain, so it was better to remain indoors. Mendelssohn used his ‘free time’ for a new symphony in the vibrant key of A major, the Italian. It seems to have fl owed from his pen with consummate ease, although he was only to complete the work some two years later, in Berlin, when his journey to Paestum on the Gulf of Salerno was far in his past.

The Italian is a real party piece. This was certainly the view following the work’s premiere in London on 13 May 1833, given by the Philharmonic Society. (Mendelssohn was highly acclaimed in London, where he had been commissioned to produce a new symphony). This makes it all the more remarkable that Mendelssohn himself described this masterpiece as having been ‘one of the most bitter moments of my entire career’, fretting, for years to come, about whether he ought to rewrite the second, third and fourth movements.

The opening Allegro vivace abounds with Mediterranean exuberance. The slow movement probably depicts a religious procession, witnessed by the composer in Naples. The third movement — Con moto moderato — seems to have little in the way of Italian infl uence. Rather one might imagine oneself in the shade of Germanic limes, beech and pine trees, Biedermeier-style. But the fi nale is drawn directly from Italian folk life: an irresistible, whirling dance to the rhythmic beat of the saltarello.

By 1963, Annie Ross had permanently moved back to England and had started working more as an actress than as a singer. This interesting set (reissued by DCC as an audiophile CD) features Ross backed by an orchestra arranged and conducted by Johnnie Spence. The obvious high point is one of the darkest and scariest versions of “Love For Sale” ever recorded; Ross’ desperate-sounding rendition is haunting. Otherwise, she performs a variety of standards in lightly swinging fashion, not scatting or using vocalese but instead working on interpreting the lyrics. Other highlights include “All of You,” “Nature Boy,” “Like Someone in Love” and “Limehouse Blues.” This worthy set was also put out on CD by the Fresh Sound label.

Attitudes was a pop/rock quartet from Los Angeles made up of some well-known names — producer/composer/arranger David Foster on keyboards, guitarist Danny Korthmar (who has worked extensively with James Taylor and Don Henley), bassist Paul Stallworth, and noted session drummer Jim Keltner. It pays to listen to Dare To Be, Behn Gillece’s second release as a leader for Posi-Tone Records, from the bottom up. Bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Jason Tiemann are one of most congenial, articulate, and straightforward bass and drums team in recent memory. They’re self-effacing, deeply focused and frisky. Regardless of the differences in the material and tempos of the individual tracks (not to mention additional percussive sounds fashioned by Gillece’s vibes and Nate Radley’s guitar) Okegwo and Tiemann make sure that the band stays centered and grounded. There’s always enough space for the soloists to explore and create something fresh within the clearly established parameters. Conversely, Gillece and Radley are more than capable of making the music move without the bass and drums. Check out the relaxed ambiance engendered by just the vibes and guitar at the onset of “Camera Eyes,” the disc’s opening track; or, Gillece alone, patiently moving through the melody and accompanying himself during a good portion of the head of “A Time For Love,” the record’s closer.

“The Symphonic Sound of Fury” showcases Billy Fury’s unparalleled original vocals from the legendary album ‘The Sound of Fury’ backed by newly recorded arrangements from the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by James Morgan. This title captures Billy’s timeless singing and marries it with a deeply compelling backdrop sure to breathe new life into these legendary recordings.

From the producers (on the process of putting Billy with an orchestra): We were delighted to be asked to create a new symphonic album of Billy Fury’s iconic songs. For some, we added an orchestra to the existing track, perhaps subtly doubling the rhythm section so that it stood up to the addition of 50 more players. For most, though, we ‘stripped’ Billy’s voice from the original track, using a combination of different studio software techniques. Some of Billy’s original arrangements were already quite big, and his voice was quite low in the mix, so the strip off process left lots of ‘artefacts’ behind (bits of the old arrangement). For these we then created the new orchestral arrangement around the bits left behind – a bit of a jigsaw puzzle! So the results are a blend of old and new, while all the time we’ve been careful to make sure we retained the spirit of the original performance. Working the recordings in detail felt a little like the audio equivalent of a painting restoration; when we were working with Billy’s vocal in isolation, it seemed almost as if we were in the recording studio in West Hampstead with him. Message from Lisa Voice ,Billy’s partner and head of the BF Estate: “ There will only ever be the one and only Billy Fury, and despite being so wonderfully self-effacing I am sure that he would, privately at least, have been proud of the way his wonderful recordings have now been complemented by a philharmonic orchestra. A larger-than-life performer best remembered for his 1960 R&B chart-topper “There Is Something on Your Mind,” singer Bobby Marchan was born Oscar James Gibson in Youngstown, OH, on April 30, 1930. As a child he became fascinated by the female impersonators who appeared on the so-called “chitlin circuit” of black nightclubs, and began singing and performing comedy in drag while in his teens. In 1953 Marchan organized his own drag troupe, the Powder Box Revue; during a booking at New Orleans’ Dew Drop Inn, he became enamored with the city, making it his home for the remainder of his life. There he accepted a job as MC at the Club Tijuana, where he was discovered by Aladdin Records president Eddie Meisner. Marchan cut his debut single, “Have Mercy,” for producer Cosimo Matassa in 1954, but Aladdin dropped him soon after, and he landed at Dot for the follow-up, “Just a Little Ol’ Wine.”

Los Angeles indie electro unit Capital Cities first came together as the duo of composer/songwriters Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian. The two were initially working as jingle writers and met on Craigslist in 2011. Shortly after meeting, they released an EP online, which included the song “Safe and Sound,” an upbeat mash of programming and melody that went viral and gained the act a lot of Internet exposure. Eventually, Merchant and Simonian were joined by bassist Manny Quintero, trumpeter Spencer Ludwig, guitarist Nick Merwin, and drummer Channing Holmes. The fully realized live version of Capital Cities played festivals internationally, opening shows for Jane’s Addiction, Asher Roth, and many others. The full-length In a Tidal Wave of Mystery appeared on Capitol in June 2013, followed later that year by the Kangaroo Court EP. The band’s innovative video for “Kangaroo Court” earned them a Grammy nomination the following year. Capital Cities returned in the summer of 2017 with another EP, Swimming Pool Summer. ~ Fred Thomas

The 11th studio album from Ireland’s Celtic Woman, 2016’s Voices of Angels, showcases the long-running all-female vocal ensemble’s sophisticated, harmony-based sound. The album follows up their popular 2015 effort, Destiny, and once again finds them delivering a mix of originals, traditional folk songs, classical pieces, and well-curated pop covers. The album was recorded in Dublin and features Celtic Woman backed by the 72-piece Orchestra of Ireland. Showcased are band vocalists Máiréad Carlin, Éabha McMahon, and Susan McFadden. For six evenings, from 28th March to 2nd April 1983, the John Horler Trio rhythm section supported the legendary trumpet player Chet Baker at The Canteen in London. For those who were fortunate enough to be there, these were magical shows. The rhythm section was tight and Chet was at the top of his game. The best of the six hours of music is presented here on ‘Live in London Volume II’ and has been restored and remastered to the highest quality.Jim Richardson, Chet’s bassist, asked him if he could record the shows for his personal enjoyment. Chet was only too happy to agree, and Jim managed to capture most of the performances on a SONY TCS 300 audiocassette recorder. Over the years, Jim selectively shared this astonishing music, and those who heard it encouraged him to find a way to release it to the public. However, a combination of factors precluded this from happening for 33 years, until Martin Hummel met Jim late one evening at Ronnie Scott’s. Jim’s story about the music and his unwavering desire to share this with the world caught Hummel’s attention. Together, they persevered and ultimately The Chet Baker Estate granted permission to release the material on the Ubuntu Music record label.These, just like the original ‘Live in London’ release, are exceptional performances of Baker at his best, with music that touches the head, the heart and the soul.

Clara Castro – Caostrofobia (2018)

The singer-songwriter from Minas Gerais, Clara Castro, 23, scheduled for July 20, in music applications, the release of her debut album. “Caostrofobia” was produced by Rodrigo Campello and will be released by the label NOMAD, with distribution of Som Livre. The album opens in a rocky climate with the title track, a partnership between Nathan Itaborahy and Renato da Lapa. “Caostrofobia” talks about the creative process and the life in expansion in the space of an apartment: “He smiled at Guadalupe at the altar / Vagou with fireflies around / He turned on the disco at twenty-three / And made a commotion in the morning”, says an excerpt from the lyrics, playful and imaginative. “It is the city invading the apartment and the apartment invading the city.An invitation for the listener to imagine there, in that confusion that is the head of those who live always recreating the world within themselves, solving the inevitable prisons that urban life brings” , explains Clara Castro.

Single re-reading of the work, “A Train for the Stars” (Gilberto Gil / Cazuza) won a contemporary arrangement, which seeks to highlight the density of the letter. “It is a poetry extremely current and pertinent to everything we are living,” says Clara. Following the release of the first single released, “Astral Winter” (Nathan Itaborahy / Douglas Poerner): “What stone I swallowed / What shit I kicked / What Wednesday brought me out of here / What scream I held / What dish that What contempt or despair I committed. “

Sertin’s Pretinho was cast to lead the percussion and the cavaquinho in “Modulation”, Clara’s partnership with Nathan Itaborahy and Renato da Lapa. Focusing on the female force, the samba shows a woman who uses her singing to put herself in the world, and already starts sending the message: “Boy, look here, I warned you / My type does not fit, it does not suit / When I drink and do not I like, I say / If I need a callous floor / I will not shut up for anyone “. The song changes with the composition “Volte”, in which Clara talks about love pains: “So many days and nights without sleep / Remembering sentences to forget you / Ten poems and doses of whiskey / For this heart that only thinks of suffering “.

Recorded in New York, the dance “Sobe o Sol” has modern arrangement of Alex Vaz and speaks of love without time and without charge. Clara says that the song was born fast, “like when we decide to go into fright. When five minutes away from the one we love, we realize that love is growing.” Uncovered in purity and feeling, “Our Prayer” was composed in the ukelelê at the beginning of a love story.

“Nothing is so certain that I can not just dissipate while I sing this song,” says the lyrics to “Nothing is So Right”, which talks about what could have been and was not. “This transitory present in everything is, paradoxically, the pain and consolation of life. This song is about our eternal becoming, about which will dissipate, even if there is pain, to give way to another direction, another direction “explains Clara.

A singer and composer from Bituca – University of Popular Music, in Barbacena, where she lives, Clara Castro composed “Corpo Só” when she studied there. The song is a partnership with her mother, Gloria Bittar, and was inspired by a letter that a Holocaust survivor wrote to her son, still in concentration camp times. This son comes to be the Hungarian Ian Guest, master of musicalization of Clara. The track gained arrangement of Mario Adnet, piano of Pitágoras Silveira and had the strings recorded in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“Nothing is so slow / Wait for you to get the right direction / But hurry to get there / Rush the step that chance gives”, says part of the reggae refrain “Mirror”, singer’s partnership with Ciro Belluci and Nathan Itaborahy. Closing the work, “Far from the World” was also the last to be recorded, live, with guitar, clarinet and percussion. Clara explains that she composed the song for a friend who was going through a difficult phase. “It is a caress for problems without solution, which makes the friend who knows us only in the look,” he says.
