Following a first recording devoted to Dvořák’s Dumky Trio and Trio no.3, Omri Epstein, Mathieu van Bellen and Ori Epstein are joined by one of their former teachers at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, the violist Miguel da Silva, a founder member of the famous Quatuor Ysaÿe. Together they pursue this series of the Czech composer’s complete chamber music with piano: there is an obvious close rapport between the musicians, who share with us their passion for this repertory and their pleasure in playing together. The Piano Quartet no.1 in D major op.23 of 1875 was one of the first works in which the young Dvořák, inspired by Schubert, laid the foundations of the compositional style which he would conserve for the rest of his life. Fourteen years later, he composed the Piano Quartet no.2 in E flat major op.87, completed under pressure from his publisher. This work, influenced by Brahms, is one of the masterpieces of his maturity. Two further recordings will complete this quadriptych of the Czech composer’s keyboard trios, quartets and quintets.

The legendary band Godflesh return with “Post Self”, their first album since 2014’s “A World Lit Only By Fire”. Godflesh are known as an industrial metal band, but their 8th album, Post-Self, sees them move away from metal and experiment with industrial and post-punk sounds, exploring what inspired them in the first place. Lyrically the album deals with anxiety and depression, fear, mortality and paternal and maternal relationships.

The UK duo switch up their approach a bit here, as their eighth full-length to date explores the lighter, more experimental side of Godflesh. The release finds the band focusing more of their attention on the industrial and post-punk aspects of their sound rather than on their dense metallic tendencies.

Although Justin K. Broadrick and G.C. Green maintain their aggressive undertones, they highlight their late ’70s/early ’80s influences and hypnotic, Jesu-style flourishes. Tracks like “Mirror of Finite Light” and “Mortality Sorrow” feature trance-filled rhythms and lush synths, respectively, while tunes like “Be God” place dissonant noise at the forefront of the album.

However, Post Self still features that trademark colossal heaviness that Godflesh have become known for over nearly three decades. The title track and “Parasite” contain those instantly recognizable pulsating beats and crushing sludgy heaviness, while Broadrick’s distinct vocals are as powerful as ever.

The harsh intensity of Godflesh’s sound is coupled with themes that deal with anxiety, depression, fear and mortality, as well as paternal and maternal relationships, which add a whole other layer to the album’s dark atmosphere. Even though Post Self isn’t exactly what was expected, it’s a masterful release from two musicians who seem to be incapable of creating anything short of exquisite.

“G Sides” is a B-sides collection by Gorillaz from their first studio album session, “Gorillaz” and the “Tomorrow Comes Today” EP. The compilation was originally released only in Japan in December 2001. The US edition, with a slightly different track listing, followed in February 2002. The European version, released in March 2002, features the original Japanese track listing. G Sides reached number 65 on the UK Albums Chart and number 84 on the US Billboard 200.

Though it seems a bit soon for a virtual group with only one album to its name to be releasing a B-sides collection, Gorillaz’s G-Sides more or less justifies its existence by gathering some of the best extra tracks from the band’s singles, most of which are only available as imports. As with Gorillaz, which surrounded catchy songs like “Clint Eastwood” and “19/2000” with quirkier, more experimental tracks, the band uses its B-sides as a chance to stretch out even further musically, either with remixes or with unconventional musical sketches. G-Sides features some of each, ranging from the even bouncier, more upbeat remix of “19/2000” by Soulchild to the rather eerie “Hip Albatross,” which mixes samples of moaning zombies from Dawn of the Dead with trip-hoppy beats and moody guitars. Rapper Phi Life Cyber reinforces Gorillaz’s hip-hop roots by joining them on two tracks, a reworking of “Clint Eastwood” and “The Sounder.” The appealingly simple “12D3,” with its strummy guitar and playful Damon Albarn vocals, recalls some of Blur’s later work, and the funky, quirky “Ghost Train” and the English version of “Latin Simone” also are as enjoyable as anything that appeared on Gorillaz. Aside from the Wiseguys’ rather limp reworking of “19/2000,” the only problem with G-Sides is its brevity; the U.S. version only includes ten of their B-sides, none of which are from their biggest single, “Clint Eastwood.” And while most of the import singles featured CD-ROM tracks of the group’s amazing animated videos, none of them appear here. Though the enhanced version of G-Sides and the Japanese D-Sides collection feature more of Gorillaz’s B-sides, and they’ll probably have a video collection sooner rather than later, these kinds of omissions make G-Sides a slightly frustrating collection. Gorillaz completists will no doubt have all of the import singles already, but G-Sides is the logical next step for anyone intrigued by the group’s debut.

Tracklist:
01 – 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)

Grant Earl LaValley is an American singer-songwriter from Columbus, Ohio, but his inspiration for this album comes from his move to the isolated desert of Joshua Tree, California.

Evoking elements of the folk musician Gene Clark (the Byrds) and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, From LaValley Below is permeated by eerily gothic acoustics, and provokes an array of emotions. The low notes of the acoustic guitar help create allure and mystery on “Dark Love,” the female vocal adding to the imagery of the untamed passion LaValley explores, expressing the emotions of a forlorn romantic relationship. Besides conveying a desperate message of emptiness, the clinking glass bottles in “Where Are All My Friends” become integral to the rhythm, too; the empty bottles coincide with drums that are distant, but noticeable. The song entertains, with a harmonica solo that accompanies its bleak lyrics. Clinking glass appears again in “Dungeon Waltz,” giving a theatrical component to the track. A ruminative album complete with lamentations and tales of love, From LaValley Below is a perfect listen for brooders and deep thinkers.

The third full-length solo release for the Bad Religion lead singer features contributions from Social Distortion’s Brent Harding, David Hidalgo, Jr., and Jonny Wickersham. This album represents three distinct historical trends that came together in the span of only 10 days during recording at Studios 606 and Big Bad Sound in April of 2016.

The third solo outing from the Bad Religion mastermind, Millport continues in the country-folk vein of 2006’s Cold as Clay, swapping the overdriven bar chords of his flagship band for clawhammer banjo pickin’ and soft rock harmonizing. Significantly more upbeat than the brooding Cold as Clay, Millport is as authentically frontporch-ready as anything Graffin has released thus far, due in large part to the presence of a formidable backing band that includes Social Distortion’s Brent Harding, David Hidalgo, Jr., and Jonny Wickersham, all three of whom are no strangers to making the transition from punk to country. Graffin’s confectionary melodies, always a BR mainstay, are less sinewy here and more firmly ensconced in the folk idiom, which is to be expected when one is tackling logging in the northwest (“Sawmill”) and the Great Emancipator’s last ride (“Lincoln’s Funeral Train”) in lieu of tales of social and political justice. Throughout its just-over-30-minute runtime — very punk — Graffin and company take on everything from gospel, Americana, and bluegrass to Crazy Horse-esque pre-grunge and breezy Laurel Canyon country-pop, and that they do so with such gusto makes Millport feel like less of an outlier, and more like guys making the best of a power outage. ~ James Christopher Monger

The Orchestr Gustava Broma is a distinguished big band whose documented activity dates back to 1940. As a European ensemble their path to success wasn’t always smooth, but they came to be recognized as a top calibre ensemble and have been compared with the bands of Maynard Ferguson and Dizzy Gillespie. Originally released in 1977, Polymelomodus is a cornerstone of the Brom orchestra and appears here stunningly remastered.

“Polymelomodus” shows a clash of the drive to experiments and to overstep the boundaries of jazz with a portion of juicy, billowing themes in funky colours. The big-band with an excellent timing does sound here like one painstakingly tuned instrument. The unison-played themes of “Bounty” or “Festival” overwhelm with their power, and solo parts still surprise after the years with their freshness. Original compositions of the band members are supplemented by the cover “Do It Again” from Steely Dan’s repertoire.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 57:36 minutes | 617 MB | Genre: Country
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: Qobuz | Front Cover | © New West Records

Since 2007, New West Records has curated the finest collection of recordings available from the Austin City Limits television program, on DVD, CD, and vinyl. These recordings, culled from hundreds of performances from the 1970s to the 2000s, represent one of the greatest treasures in American music. This quintessential title in the “Live From Austin, TX” performance series. Features Guy Clark’s 1989 performance is a career-spanning retrospective of legendary proportions featuring classics such as “Desperados Waiting For A Train”, “Texas 1947” and “Homegrown Tomatoes”

Guy Clark is a fine singer and a masterful live performer, but he’s a songwriter first and foremost, and the best thing about seeing the man on-stage is hearing him wrap his vocal chords around his beautifully crafted stories, which he relates with a sense of depth and detail no one else can quite match. Live from Austin, TX isn’t the first or the best live disc from Guy Clark (that honor in both categories goes to 1997’s Keepers), but it does capture about an hour of Clark delivering 14 of his songs for an appreciative audience in his home state, with low-key but effective backing from violinist Stuart Duncan and bassist Edgar Meyer, and it documents Clark in great form. On this set, recorded during a taping of the television show Austin City Limits, Clark is a smart enough showman to throw in a few crowd-pleasers, such as his minor hit “Homegrown Tomatoes” and its sibling “Texas Cookin’,” but for the most part he doesn’t shy away from the deeper and more personal material in his catalog, such as “Randall Knife,” “Immigrant Eyes” or “Texas 1947,” and here you can hear the common thread between them. Clark’s songs are made of the stuff of human lives and whether they aim for laughter or tears, they speak of emotions that most everyone has confronted at one time or another, and in language that is both artful and straightforward. There aren’t a lot of artists who can write like Clark, and fewer still who can share their songs with the same simple eloquence; if the opportunity to see him work his magic in person doesn’t present itself often enough for you, this disc will serve as a fine reminder until he arrives in your town again, and it’s a welcome souvenir for those who do get to hear him in person on a regular basis.

Sometimes it takes a personal tragedy to catalyse an artist’s practise, a crack in everything, to paraphrase Leonard Cohen, that let’s the creative light in. Just such a traumatic fissure occurred in Charlotte Gainsbourg’s life in late 2013 with the sudden death in Paris of her half-sister, the fashion photographer Kate Barry. Reeling from the news and inevitably plunged into an extended period of grieving, the distressing event had transpired just as Charlotte was initiating activity on a new album, the successor to 2010’s IRM. Rather than put a total brake on creative proceedings, however, the anguish would slowly but inexorably find expression in the pages of Charlotte’s journal and thus, eventually, in the lyrics of the songs that she would write for Rest, her long-gestating but ultimately cathartic third studio album.

Chick Corea & Steve Gadd Band – Chinese Butterfly (2018) [Qobuz FLAC 24bit/96kHz]

Pianist Chick Corea and drummer Steve Gadd purposefully rekindle their ’70s fusion roots on 2017’s double-disc Chinese Butterfly. Although they are longtime associates, with Gadd touring often with Corea and appearing on albums like 1976’s My Spanish Heart, they’ve never totally collaborated on an album before. On Chinese Butterfly, Corea joins Gadd’s working ensemble for a set of newly penned originals that make the most of their long-held mutual admiration. Joining them are their equally adept bandmates, saxophonist/flutist Steve Wilson, guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke, bassist Carlitos Del Puerto, and percussionist Luisito Quintero. Together, they have crafted an album that draws upon the expansive, keyboard-heavy sound of Corea’s ’70s fusion work, while also weaving in various Latin and African traditions. In some ways, the album brings to mind Corea’s 1978 album Friends, which also featured Gadd in a similarly loose and lively atmosphere. Tracks like the opening “Chick’s Chums” and slinky “Like I Was Sayin’” are funky, bop-inflected jams that could easily have been culled from a vintage Return to Forever album. Similarly, the languid, Brazilian-accented “Serenity” is a lyrical, gorgeously rendered number that fits nicely into Corea’s long-standing love of world rhythms. Those rhythms are further explored on the album’s second disc, which features an epic reading of the classic “Return to Forever” theme featuring guest vocals by Philip Bailey. Elsewhere, Loueke grounds the Afro-bossa-influenced “Wake-Up Call” with his hushed vocals that give way to the band’s lively group interplay. With both Corea and Gadd in their seventies at the time of recording, it’s refreshing to hear them sound so inventive and willing to explore new songs, even as they look back on their over 50-year partnership. Ultimately, it’s that vibrant, in-the-moment reciprocity that makes Chinese Butterfly such a compelling listen.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 54:51 minutes | 523 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Booklet, Front Cover | © Ricercar

This recording is devoted to the works of a composer about whom we know practically nothing — neither his date of birth nor even his origins. All that we do know is that Giorgi held the position of maestro di cappella in San Giovanni Laterano in Rome in 1719 and that he ended his career in Lisbon, dying there in 1762.

The discovery of his music was a life-changing experience for the young Argentine conductor Leonardo Garcia-Alarcon, music director of Clematis and the Cappella Mediterranea and now also of the Choeur de Chambre de Namur.

Giorgi’s music contains many characteristic traits of Renaissance polyphony such as the use of the polychoral style as well as madrigalesque effects, although these older techniques are nonetheless put at the service of a new style of richly imaginative music with new harmonic colours.

A concertante Mass with soloists and instrumental accompaniment forms the centrepiece of this recording, although several motets from Giorgi’s immense body of work are also included; one of these is the deeply moving Ave Maria that also provides the CD with its title.

Christophe Rousset plays the harpsichord pieces by the French composer Balbastre (pronounced Balbatre) as a documented interpreter. Little known by the public at large, the musician of the eighteenth century helped to perfect the forte-piano and to publicize this new instrument. Influenced by composers such as Handel and Domenico Scarlatti, masters of the vocal repertoire, he seduces by a virtuoso writing, full of effects. A sonata with violin accompaniment ends this program with a delicate touch.

Everyone thinks that they know Alceste by Lully, and yet this 1674 masterpiece has almost never been recorded in its entirety. Apart from the Malgoire version from 1975 with Bruce Brewer and Felicity Palmer, which is starting to become outdated, the real treat is a second versoin by the same Malgoire twenty years later with Jean-Philippe Lafont and Colette Alliot-Lugaz… And so we can only take our hats off to the new discographical opus from Christophe Rousset’s Talens Lyriques, a lively and elegant reading which allows us to rediscover everything that was so innovative about this brilliant, effervescent Florentine, who would become a typical Versaillais, a courtesan and a wheeler-dealer. King Louis XIV – 36 years old, still with all his own teeth and a victorious war leader – could only feel flattered by the piece signed by Quinault: Alcide, who covets the beautiful Alceste (who has been promised to Admetus), is none other than Hercules himself – Louis XIV seeing himself in Hercules saving the beautiful Madame de Montespan from the clutches of her husband.

To be sure, in this opera, Admetus/Hercules magnanimously hands Alceste, whom he has saved from hell, to her husband, while the poor Mr Montespan would end his career and his life exiled in Gascony… Honour intact. The Sun King loved the work, to the point that he commanded that rehearsals be held at Versailles. According to Madame de Sévigné, “The King declared that if he found himself in Paris when it was performed, he would go to see it every night.” That being said, if Alceste suited the tastes of the court, it didn’t do so well in Paris, where Lully’s enemies, jealous of the extravagant privileges that he had won (the exclusive right to “have sung any whole piece in France, wither in French verse or in other languages, without the written permission of said Sir Lully, on pain of a ten thousand livre fine, and confiscation of theatres, equipment, decorations, costumes…”), heaped plot upon plot, while the gallant Mercury sang his little couplet: Dieu !  Le bel opéra ! Rien de plus pitoyable ! Cerbère y vient japper d’un aboi lamentable !  Oh ! Quelle musique de chien ! Oh ! Quelle musique du diable ! [Lord!/Fine opera!/There’s nothing so pitiable!/Cerberus is yapping, his howls lamentable!/What doggish music!/What devilish music!]. Posterity would decide otherwise, and Rousset proved it triumphantly.

Johann Christoph Pepusch’s English-language masque Venus and Adonis premiered at London’s Theatre Royal on 12 March 1715. Inspired by the operas of composers like Giovanni Battista Bononcini and Alessandro Scarlatti, it was the most substantial effort of the period to ‘reconcile Musick to the English Tongue.’ As part of the battle for supremacy amongst London’s theatres, Pepusch recruited ‘a select Band of the best Masters of Instrumental Musick’ and two of the city’s leading singers, the ‘Italian lady’ Margarita de L’Epine en travesti as Adonis and the contralto Jane Barbier as Venus. The work bristles with Italian virtuosity and dynamism and unlike most English-language dramatic music at the time, Venus and Adonis makes ample use of dramatic recitative. A clear model for Handel’s later Acis and Galatea, this world-premiere recording of Pepusch’s wonderful masque reestablishes the work as a milestone in the history of English opera.
