Intended to instruct us and elevate our souls , the keyboard oeuvre of Bach allows us to travel to concertante Italy and invites us to dance or improvisation. From the moving ‘Capriccio on the Departure of a Beloved Brother’ to the ‘Italian Concerto’ by way of ‘Partita no.1’, the pianist Claire-Marie Le Guay offers a portrait of Bach that reveals the multiple facets of his genius: the virtuoso improviser, the pedagogue, the builder of cathedrals in sound.

„an enticing array of works, combining the ubiquitous with the more esoteric. From the outset, her playing is strong and assured; her fingerwork is seamless“ (Harriet Smith, Gramophone)

„a clever selection of Bach … Le Guay need not fear that her performance will be overlooked. Just listen to her energetic openings and tonal control in the slower sections … a perfectly satisfactory Bach recital that is captured in perfect sound.“ (Marius Dawn Pianist)

‘Let’s Get Lost’, Cyrille Aimée’s second album for Mack Avenue Records brings to light a different side of the radiant singer. After two years of dazzling audiences around the world with the joyful repertoire of ‘It’s a Good Day’, Winner of both the Montreux Jazz Festival’s Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition, Aimée reflects on her musical and personal growth, telling us the story of a nascent love coming to full bloom.

Accompanied by two guitar wunderkinds, Adrien Moignard and Michael Valeanu, as well as an Australian rhythm section (consisting of bassist Sam Anning and drummer Raj Jayaweera) so tight-knit that they are almost the same person, she adds pensive touches to her usual zest and reveals a bittersweet depth that will have listeners daydreaming for a while.

‘Let’s Get Lost’ speaks of love in three different languages, wide ranging references, oldies and odd metered originals, yet it retains a distinct identity, like summer grass freckled with late afternoon sun. Aimée and her band weave confidently from one musical region to the next, and Valeanu’s guitar arrangements always underscore the meaning of every word in uncontrived and subtle fashion.

Celebrating the 300th anniversary of Gluck’s birth, Daniel Behle presents this album of Gluck’s lesser known opera arias. Showcasing their rich variety of styles, he illustrates that these works are primed for revival.
In the world of opera the artistic achievement of singers and their fellow musicians can create a special, incendiary chemistry with an audience. There is nothing like that magical moment of silence at the end of a marvellous aria before the first cries of „Bravo!“ ring out.

For his Gluck recital the German tenor Daniel Behle has chosen glorious arias by a master of the 18th century – Christoph Willibald Gluck – that are sure to elicit a rapturous response, especially when performed by one of the finest lyric tenors of our time.

Behle has been compared to such tenor legends as Fritz Wunderlich, Richard Tauber and Anton Dermota, praised for his “bright, supple and warm timbre” and his natural musicality (Fono Forum, August 2012). The beauty of his tone is complemented by the probing nature of his interpretations as he captures the emotions of each character with captivating psychological insight, playing in a masterly fashion with the colours of the music. Familiar arias are transformed into a new and moving experience.

Daniel Behle is accompanied by one of Europe’s leading Baroque orchestras, Armonia Atenea, conducted by the extraordinary George Petrou.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:16:52 minutes | 1,43 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download  | Booklet, Front Cover | © Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

The subject matter of this collection of classic music from (mostly) Hollywood seems a major departure from violinist Daniel Hope’s previous focus on music contending with the Nazi cultural orbit, but actually it’s a logical step: a great deal of Hollywood film music was composed by refugees from Germany, and the stylistic world they created continues to resonate today. There are several good recordings of this repertory by young violinists, but Hope’s stands out. Partly it’s because Hope’s big, richly sentimental sound fits this repertory well. Partly it’s because he varies the program effectively with the full Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, of Erich Korngold, and an appearance by none other than Sting in Hanns Eisler’s The Secret Marriage, while still finding the core that connects all these pieces. Partly it’s that Hope finds some unusual things that connect with the rest of the program: a couple of German film scores from the early 1930s, and the German melody better known as As Time Goes By, from the film Casablanca. And partly it’s the variety and sequence of arrangements running from Jascha Heifetz down to the present day. The result is a fine outing that will satisfy anyone in the mood for big film themes, but also those who are seriously interested in film music.

Israeli-American conductor and pianist David Greilsammer, pictured in the graphics of this album standing on the edge of a piano as if it were a diving board, has specialized in unusual programming decisions, specifically those relating to Mozart. As the odd title Mozart In-Between suggests, here he will not disappoint those in search of more of the same. His most bizarre move here is to insert a newly commissioned contemporary piece, Swiss composer Denis Schuler’s atonal In-between for string quartet, orchestra, and percussion, in between two excerpts from Mozart’s incidental music to Thamos, König in Ägypten, K. 345. Greilsammer writes that this work “is intended to serve as a mirror that sheds light on the past,” although it is not clear why the interruption of Mozart’s music is necessary for this purpose. The Schuler work might seem to be aimed toward the defamiliarization of Mozart’s music, but Greilsammer goes on to say that he actually finds in its chiaroscuro effects something analogous to the “violent imaginary storm that occurs in Mozart’s heart” in the Mozart pieces performed. Although the C minor central movement of the Piano Concerto No. 9 in E flat major, K. 271, is one of his more tragic essays, the Mozart works in the main don’t fit that description, for which he had the vocabulary of Sturm und Drang available. They’re actually rather sunny and brisk. The exception would be the final aria from the very early opera Mitridate, re di Ponto, K. 87, sung here by countertenor Lawrence Zazzo. This is supposed to be part of the in-between concept as well, but rare indeed would have been the 18th century listener who could have fathomed what is going on. There is good news: the individual performances are fine in themselves, and Greilsammer’s punchy playing in the Piano Concerto No. 9 represents a genuinely original conception of the work. And, for that matter, the boldness of the entire conception is ultimately all to the good. But this particular effort seems inadequately thought out.

For a long time Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello worked as Kepellmeister at the Wurttemberg court in Stuttgart. His concerti a tre are actually triosonates for two violins and basso continuo. In these charming chamber music works Brescianello finds his own style, which is characterized by sonorous slow phrases and joy in virtuosity. The ensemble Der musikalische Garten, which has always been highly praised for its musical discoveries, recorded the first six of the 12 concerti a tre. The musicians of the ensemble Der musikalische Garten are current and graduated students of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and have met in Basel. The ensemble engages intensively in the German music of the seventeenth century, especially in the scordatura repertoire, of which most important representatives are H. I. F. Biber, Joh. H. Schmelzer or J. Pachelbel. However, the ensemble is always searching for new, rarely or never performed scordatura repertoire. The ensemble was selected as “Promising Ensemble 2011” by the IYAP Antwerpen and won second prize and audience’s prize of the international competition “Van Wassenaer” in Amsterdam 2011.

The opera Dorilla in Tempe, which was first performed in Venice in 1726, exudes a delightful rural atmosphere. The libretto tells a bucolic story set in a valley of Thessaly. Between amorous twists and a huge sacrifice, the various misadventures of Dorilla offer Vivaldi the occasion to deploy a luminous sound palette where hunting horns and flutes often support choruses and soloists. He resumed the work in 1728, still in Venice, then again in 1732 in Prague and one last time in 1734 at “his” theatre – Sant’Angelo. Only this 1734 version has reached us, and so it serves as a basis for present recordings. It is a “pasticcio”, for which Vivaldi used various composers – Hasse, Giacomelli, Sarri and Leo in this case – whose melodies replace some of his own; about a third of them are borrowed from colleagues in fact. It was never Vivaldi’s intention to recycle on the sly: the principle of “pasticcio” was the most widespread at the time and very popular with the public. The particularly rare vocal timbres are noticeable: they are made up of almost exclusively deep voices, including three mezzos and one baritone and even two deep castratos, nowadays replaced by contraltos who are much easier to dig up. The entire score gives off a mad energy; a delightful peculiarity adorns part of the opening, in which Vivaldi takes over one of the movements with his Four Seasons with the addition of a choir – proof that even though this music is rich at the base, it can still be further enriched, provided your name is Vivaldi! Diego Fasolis and his ensemble I Barrochisti offer us here one of the very, very rare discographical performances of this neglected masterpiece.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 32:50 minutes | 752 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © CAPITOL

Dean Martin typified both the romance and seeming effortlessness of the early-1960s swinger. This collection of lushly orchestrated songs features Italian pop classics like ‘There’s No Tomorrow,’ ‘Arrivederci Roma,’ ‘Return to Me,’ and the Latin-flavored ‘Belle From Barcelona,’ all performed with Martin’s familiar relaxed intimacy and devil-may-care swagger. The sessions producing this album’s songs were recorded between September 6 and September 8 of 1961. The backing orchestra was conducted and arranged by Gus Levene.

„The only surprising thing about an album of Italian songs by Dean Martin, the most overtly Italian of the Italian-American pop singers, was that it wasn’t recorded until near the end of Martin’s recording contract with Capitol Records. Maybe it was the success of similar albums by Connie Francis that convinced the label or the artist that such a collection could have commercial appeal, but given that some of Martin’s biggest hits, including ‘That’s Amore’ and ‘Volare,’ had been Italian-flavored, it’s hard to see why they would have needed convincing. In any case, Martin was typically convincing on this album in both English and Italian, whether re-cutting his hit ‘Return to Me’ or trying an alternate English lyric for ‘O Sole Mio’ (‘There’s No Tomorrow’). Listeners should be forewarned that this is not a collection of Martin’s Italian hits, but rather a newly recorded album (circa 1961). Nevertheless, it is a good match of singer to songs, and it became Martin’s first charting album on Capitol.“ (William Ruhlmann, AMG)

David Garrett – TIMELESS Brahms & Bruch Violin Concertos (2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz  | Time – 01:03:49 minutes | 1,08 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Decca

The photogenic violinist David Garrett, who uses the maiden name of his American mother professionally, has been known for crossover releases featuring the likes of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” He was trained partly in Israel, which may have led to his pairing with the nearly octogenarian conductor Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Mehta makes his aims explicit in the booklet: “I hope that this CD will help David’s other public, the crossover public, to also listen to Brahms and Bruch and to admire his honesty toward this music. I hope David brings in this whole generation into the classical concert hall.” The performance is perhaps led by Mehta with this end in mind: as a whole it’s brash, bright, and sharp. You might have a different taste in the Brahms Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77, especially, but the fact is that Garrett is a good deal more than adequate here. He may be following Mehta’s lead in some respects, but the dense first-movement interactions between violin and orchestra Brahms wrote for the virtuoso Joseph Joachim crackle with intensity. The inevitably crowd-pleasing Violin Concerto in G minor, Op. 26, of Max Bruch fits Garrett still better. The booklet offers an interview with Garrett geared toward newcomers, who may well find this album an enjoyable path into core classical repertoire.

Back in the mid-20th century, before rock & roll was used to describe a type of music, it was an obscure euphemism for the physical act of love. In 2017, Danko Jones haven’t tried to reclaim rock & roll’s original meaning, but they have decided to make a rock & roll album (music that’s fast, loud, and has a lot of guitars) about rock & roll (love, sex, and the charms of the female species). Wild Cat isn’t crassly obsessed with sex, but on this album, Danko Jones sound as fascinated with women as they are with guitars, and tunes like “Do This Every Day,” “My Little Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and “She Likes It” are lean, loud, and swaggering celebrations of both romance and Eros. Most hard rock bands don’t have a great track record of writing tunes about sex that don’t sound bone-headed or hostile, but Wild Cat manages the impressive feat of making women every bit as cool as the guys who are crazy for them. Suitably, this music sounds a bit less aggressive than the majority of Danko Jones’ work, but the hard rock groove here is highly potent. And the swagger the titular bandleader brings to the music is impressive while his guitar work is explosive, and the rhythm section of bassist John Calabrese and drummer Rich Knox is a marvel of power and finesse. Danko Jones still worship at the shrines of AC/DC, Motörhead, and Thin Lizzy, but they more than do right by their influences, and like those bands, they’ve learned to write songs about sex that have a genuine sense of humor, especially the grand finale “Revolution (But Then We Make Love).” Wild Cat is a wild ride from one of the best hard rock bands treading the boards today, and it’s a fine introduction to their high-octane style and certain to please loyal fans. ~ Mark Deming

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 46:32 minutes | 858 MB | Genre: Blues
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: Qobuz | Booklet, Front Cover | © Disques Bros Records

The 7th recording of Guy Bélanger’s eventful career showcases the composer, band leader and harp master at the top of his game. The album includes 10 superb instrumental Folk and Blues compositions and two songs, one of which sung by Quebec favourite Luce Dufault. Virtuoso guitar player Preston Reed (Scotland) and cello master Eric Longsworth also contribute. Guy Bélanger has received many awards for his songwriting, the latest the André Gagnon Award from the Spacq last September.

“My Dearest Friend” is a track dedicated to one of Guy’s closest friends, Bob Walsh. The harmonica on this track is phenomenal and it pulls everything together. You can hear the story line behind the instrumentals and the slow but meaningful sound.

“Traces & Scars” is a great collaboration between a cellist from France, Eric Longsworth and Guy Bélanger. It is a song that tells of the journey of life through the musical instruments played.

“Hot Time” is a track with some good ol’ VooDoo traces sliding in and out throughout the song. With the facts between our French culture in Canada creating the famous Louisiana city and dating back to the war of 1812 and implementing that amazing culture. You can feel the culture pour out in this song.

So with all these perfectly put together tracks, along with the French culture, blues and folk sound, it has a way of opening your mind, as well as your imagination up.

それぞれテイストが大きく違う楽曲の持ち味を活かす様にマスタリングされた楽曲を、より高解像度で味わえます。
