FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/192 kHz | Time – 26:17 minutes | 1,03 GB | Genre: Jazz

On his prior 1967 LP, For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her, Yarbrough had tried to move into contemporary folk-rockish covers, with negligible sales and not much greater artistic success. With Honey & Wine there also seemed to be inclinations to update his sound, but great uncertainty as to which way his music should pull. There was just a bit of a nod to pop/rock on the album, primarily in the title cut, a cover of a relatively little-known Gerry Goffin-Carole King composition. That song is a bluesy, very good yet underrated tune, but Yarbrough was not the best guy to sing it convincingly; look for the Hollies’ version instead. Much of the rest of the disc was given over to Rod McKuen covers with soppy MOR arrangements, which were sometimes (as on the excruciating “Happy Birthday to Me” and the cringingly upbeat “Ain’t You Glad You’re Livin’, Joe”) about as bathetic as McKuen ever got, which is saying something. A couple of Mason Williams tunes, “Here Am I” (with period pop harpsichord) and the bossa nova-flavored “They Are Gone,” are better but hardly memorable. In all, it’s a nearly terrible recording of sluggish easy listening pop, and not worth the money you’ll be charged if you find it in the dollar bin. Some interesting names pop up among the arrangers, though, including Williams, a pre-Bread David Gates, and Mort Garson.

‘The meditation, sobriety and modesty of Bach’s music are profoundly moving. In this era when so much importance is granted to appearances, his music remains, pushes us to introspection and raises existential questions that, despite the passage of centuries, remain topical. ‘I have chosen works transcribed by Busoni, Siloti or Kempff, and not that of works written for harpsichord, for their transcriptions hold out a thread between Bach’s era and our modern world.

That is tangible proof of the universality and timelessness of his music: it throws a bridge between men of different centuries. ‘Thierry Escaich’s music also has its roots in Bach’s. So it is that his latest works recall the music of the cantor of Leipzig, whilst strangely tinting it with the colours of the 21st centuries: bouquets of colourful harmonies, wild rhythms, moments of mystical ecstasy… ‘Béatrice Berrut Recognized on the international scene and by her peers asa major artist, for her debut on the Aparté lable, the Swiss pianist Béatrice Berrut gives us a highly intimate vision of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music.

For this, she is accompanied by a Bösendorfer piano prototype and the microphones of Nicolas Bartholomée, set up in the setting of Flagey, a multi-disciplinary arts centre in Brussels.

Silver Medal winner Beatrice Rana was praised for her ‘intensely personalized music-making’ (Dallas Morning News) that ‘had an electrical current running through virtually every measure’ (The Plain Dealer). Already a rising star, Rana was named ‘One to Watch’ by International Piano magazine just before her Cliburn appearance. In addition to a tour of the United States arranged by the Cliburn, highlights of Rana’s 2013–14 season include invitations to perform with Yannick Nézet-Seguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain, Miguel Harth-Bedoya with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and Fayçal Karoui with the Orchestre Lamoureux in Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. This live recording of her competition performances features works by Schumann Ravel and Bartók.

With performances heralded as “sheer enchantment, alternately out-of-body and almost fearsome in intensity” (Dallas Morning News) and “an endlessly fascinating piece of humanity that had the orchestra riveted on every note” (Huffington Post), Italian pianist Beatrice Rana drew mass attention during the 2013 Cliburn Competition, capturing second prize, as well as the Audience Award.

A prizewinner many times over, Ms. Rana was named “One to Watch” by International Piano magazine just before her Cliburn appearance. Highlights of her 2013–14 season include invitations to perform with Yannick Nézet-Seguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain, Miguel Harth-Bedoya with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and Fayçal Karoui with the Orchestre Lamoureux in Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and tours of the United States arranged by the Cliburn. Beatrice has previously been invited to several festivals around the world, including the Busoni, La Folle Journée, La Roque d’Anthéron, Lanaudière and Radio-France Festivals. In 2012, she released her first CD of works by Scriabin and Chopin on ATMA Classique.

“So the evening’s shining star was Beatrice Rana… She engaged the listener from the first moments, taking time in the introspective moments and capturing the irony and atmosphere of Prokofiev. The first movement cadenza was a tour-de-force She has technique to burn, but she also paced herself well… Her control of mood and sonority was often stunning.” (Cincinnati Enquirer)

Arias & scenes from l’Orféo et Euridice, Ascanio in Alba, Antigona et Ifigenia in Tauride (Traetta), Il trionfo di Clelia (Hasse), Artaserse (Bach), Ezio (Gluck), Mitridate (Mozart)

In the famous Preface to Alceste (1767), Christoph Willibald Gluck and his librettist Ranieri de’ Calzabigi posited a new direction for opera. They spoke of moving beyond Baroque forms, of striving for a new naturalism in opera. They wanted, in Calzabigi’s lovely phrase, to liberate the language of the heart. Taken from the height of this Reform period, the arias on this disc reveal composers exploring and experimenting, at struggle and at play, as they create the new forms that bring to opera the noble simplicity of the Classical era. Bejun Mehta returns to the Wigmore Hall and Covent Garden in 2014 [Mitridate].

„Bejun Mehta’s disc towers above the other Handel ‘medley’ recordings currently fashionable among opera stars. Musicality and a brilliant intelligence emanate from every track. Mehta and René Jacobs, by contrast, achieve a perfect meeting of musical minds…This is not just another aria collection, but a celebration of genius, in composition and performance alike.” (BBC Music Magazine)

‘AMERICAN Bejun Mehta is a phenomenon among today’s countertenors…he explores a universe of colour and emotion, and demonstrates the sheer effortlessness of his delivery (never once do you sense that slight unnatural unease so common among average countertenors) with the supremely stylish backing of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra under René Jacobs. Welsh soprano Rosemary Joshua also features.’ (Kenneth Walton, The Scotsman)

We are delighted to announce that organist and harpsichordist Benjamin Alard is now recording for harmonia mundi. Following several acclaimed recordings for Alpha, Benjamin Alard will now devote himself to the complete works for organ and harpsichord of Johann Sebastian Bach. A massive undertaking, involving around 30 hours of music, which will be structured into chapters that mark the significant moments in the life of the Cantor of Leipzig: “This is indeed the first time Johann Sebastian Bach’s complete works for solo harpsichord will be performed by the same musician. Contrary to the encyclopaedic complete works so far published (harpsichord, organ, cantatas, concertos, etc.), my approach is to present Bach’s harpsichord music in parallel with the chronology ofhis life, his inf luences, his travels, his professional choices, grouped symbolically into 14 chapters, to represent the number of letters in his name.” (Benjamin Alard)

Recorded last May on the Andreas Silbermann organ of 1718 (recently restored by the Blumenroeder Company) at Sainte-Aurélie’s Church in Strasbourg, and on a harpsichord made by Émile Jobin, inspired by models he has restored (Ruckers 1612, preserved in the Musée de Picardie; Dulcken 1747, preserved in the Vleeshuis, Antwerp), the first volume of this complete works will bring together pieces composed between 1695 and 1705, under the title “The Young Heir”, and will be released on 30 March 2018, the anniversary of Bach’s birth.

Bernard Foccroulle here continues his exploration of the north German organist composers with a recording of the works of Georg Böhm, a composer with whom J.S. Bach had come into contact at the end of his adolescence. At the foot of a manuscript dated around 1700 in which he had copied out pieces by Buxtehude, Reinken and Pachelbel that served as models for his own compositions, the young Johannes Sebastian Bach wrote that he was a pupil of Georg Böhm in Lüneburg. The organ works of this north German master foreshadow the young J.S. Bach’s first compositions in many respects; it was also clearly thanks to Böhm that Bach came into contact with the various genres of French music of the period. The Schnitger organ of the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar lends itself particularly well to this repertoire thanks to the power and the quality of its solo registers.

For his second release on Erato, Bertrand Chamayou is dedicating two CDs to the complete solo piano music of Ravel. “My style of playing and the way I imagine sound can be largely attributed to Ravel,” says Chamayou. “Recording his music is not just a return to my roots, but also a natural stage in my development.” This new set makes a fitting successor to Chamayou’s debut disc for the label: released in early 2014 and devoted to music by Schubert, it was praised by the Sunday Times as an “affecting, beautifully performed disc,” by Pianist magazine for “playing of intellectual conviction paired with a singing tone of heart-breaking beauty,” and by the Telegraph for “playing that radiates a generous Schubertian spirit, thoughtful in its shaping, structurally cohesive, absorbing in a spectrum of pianism that draws you into the music’s expressive heart.”

Schubert was one of the composers who inspired Ravel – notably in Valses nobles et sentimentales – as was Franz Liszt, whose transcriptions of Schubert songs were a feature of Chamayou’s debut album. His influence is evident in Ravel’s dauntingly virtuosic Gaspard de la nuit and glittering Jeux d’eau. The latter was the first ‘modern’ score that Chamayou saw as a child, and he began to play it at the age of eleven or twelve. The pianist even has a connection to the composer through one of his teachers at the Paris Conservatoire, Jean François Hessier; he was a student of Vlado Perlemuter who was mentored by Ravel himself. “I admire the purity and simplicity of Perlemuter’s approach, which seems in keeping with the famous – and probably exaggerated – statement attributed to the composer: ‘I don’t expect people to interpret me, just to play me.’”

Blake Shelton’s sixth album (not including compilations), Red River Blue features production by the in-demand, award-winning Scott Hendricks. It is preceded by smash single ‘Honey Bee,’ which reached number one on the Billboard and Mediabase country single charts within seven weeks, and has logged a million digital downloads; it holds the record for the fastest-selling digital single to be certified gold by the R.I.A.A. by a country male. It’s his fourth straight number one single and his ninth overall. In fact, given that Shelton had less than half an album completed when the single was released, he and his team were given two weeks to complete the album after it hit number one. The energy is evident throughout the 11-song set.

„With Blake Shelton being at the top of his game, he deserves all the great things that are going in his direction. If you love good country music, then check out Red River Blue. You won’t regret it.“ (Scott Sexton, Country Music)

Time passes and the harpsichordist Blandine Verlet’s witty imagination doesn’t fade. Regularly rewarded for her legendary records, she releases for the second time pieces of her beloved Couperin: the 13th and 18th so called “ordres” of the Third Book. Known for her unique interpretations, Blandine Verlet’s tempi are sometimes voluntarily slower than prescribed but they are never heavy because she is animated by a strong and lively breath. At the harpsichord, she is carried by her writer’s delicate sensitivity. The noble programme and a text of lyrical prose of her own match harmoniously in this CD book. Such as in her subtle narratives, Blandine Verlet’s interpretations give a large place to the imaginary. The fantasy of her musical self is never erased in the name of an abstract idea of the work: the life of the score mingles with that of its interpreter.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:04:41 minutes | 1,13 GB | Genre: Jazz

With a huge variety of sources and influences, Bobo Stenson’s music is never limited to a single territory. He’s not really the kind of Swedish pianist who throws himself into the wide range of improvised music, be it jazz or other genres. He is very much in line with the ECM aesthetic, the label on which he has been one of the most prominent musicians for over four decades… His Swedish trio (Anders Jormin on the double bass and Jon Fält on the drums) makes a stand in the ever so indecisive world of 2017 with this Contra La Indecisión, an album as magnificent as it is decisive. Staying true to themselves, the group supports the originality of their approach here. In addition to collective improvisations and original compositions signed by Stenson and Jormin, we find on the menu the piece which gives the album its name, composed by the Cuban Silvio Rodríguez as well as the adaption of a Slovak folk song signed by Béla Bartók, an extract from Cançons I Danses by Federico Mompou and even the famous Elégie by Erik Satie! The physical and mental force of the trio and the individuality of each of its members is such that all these influences come to blend coherently into an organic whole of profound originality. With Stenson’s lyrical touch as well as Jordan’s folk tinged phrasing make Contra La Indecisión as exquisite as possible…

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 52:06 minutes | 823 MB | Genre: Jazz

In twenty years as leader, pianist/composer Bojan Z has been judicious with the frequency and quality of his releases. Soul Shelter is his ninth CD in that time, and his first solo outing since Solobsession (Label Bleu, 2001). A new release by the pianist is always an event, and the wait, as always, has been worth it. The music on Soul Shelter covers wide stylistic territory and marks another significant milestone in Z’s captivating career to date.

Ten of the eleven compositions are originals, and this marks the biggest shift from Solobssession, where almost half the tracks were interpretive ventures. Z’s Balkan roots still influence much of the music, but he blends and bends genres so convincingly, that baroque figures, Balkan airs and rag rhythms intertwine to weave a vibrant, inclusive mosaic. Electric piano—reinvented to superb effect on Xenophonia (Label Bleu, 2006)—adds subtle textures occasionally, but this is essentially a bare bones piano outing, and a beguiling one at that.

“Full Half Moon” represents a beautiful confluence of Z’s influences; the lovely baroque intro eases delicately into Balkan folkloric realm, before Z’s tumbling, Keith Jarrett-esque lines change the composition’s course. Though Z’s a wonderful technician and soloist, Soul Shelter is perhaps better defined by adherence to melody and song form, and the pianist’s virtuoso displays are limited, and for that reason, all the more impacting. Melody always rises to the surface—almost surreptitiously at times—as on the ruminative “Sweet Shelter of Mine, where it wafts in and out like an elusive breeze, finally asserting its presence.

Wavy electric piano imbues a Ray Charles soul-funk vibe on the intro to “Hometown,” but Z is rarely if ever predictable, and is soon exploring moodier terrain. Even at his most tangential, there’s always the sense with Z that the defining melody is never far away. “Bohemska” packs plenty of punch in three minutes, moving from its Thelonious Monk-esque intro to Balkan themes and finishing with dashing, melodic runs in the tail. The classically-tinged “Dad’s Favorite” boasts a simple yet grand melody, and manages to be vaguely sad yet unabashedly romantic.

Contrast between light and heavy shading partly defines Z’s approach, particularly on the gentle “Sabalaye Blues,” where his singular use of damped strings is as much narrative in effect as percussive. On the episodic “Nedyalko’s Eleven” electric piano-drone contrasts with Z’s fluid, dramatic glissandos and urgent, punched block chords. After a period of moody abstraction, Z is inevitably drawn again to the beautiful opening melody, as though woken from fitful slumber by warm sunlight.

Drama and beauty are everywhere juxtaposed; the nervy atmospherics of the vignette “Subway”—almost keyless bar odd notes that fall like drops of water—give way to the flowing lines of the folk-flavored “303.” Electric piano brings lyricism to the music-box “Sizuit Forever,” and Duke Ellington’s timeless “On a Turquoise Cloud” closes the CD with exquisite, slow-waltz elegance. Utterly absorbing and quite beautiful, Soul Shelter is essential listening for those who still have faith in the possibility of solo piano to surprise and delight. ~ By IAN PATTERSON

A dialogue between Terry Riley’s Keyboard Study No. 2 (1964) and the Codex Faenza, a 15th century manuscript considered to be one of the very first collections of keyboard music. By putting forth the work of the performer/creator above that of the composer, this back-and-forth takes the listener on a journey that is at once timeless and eminently current.

In 1964, in the American West Coast city of San Francisco, composer Terry Riley invented American repetitive music. Based on improvisation, his studies are loosely articulated around the free combination of a series of melodic cells of different lengths, giving the pianist the freedom to use them following a freeform protocol. Codex includes the very first acoustic piano versions of Terry Riley´s seminal piece.
The Codex Faenza created circa 1420 and rediscovered in the 1930s, became an object of fascination for harpsichordists, organists and pianists the world over, as one of the oldest keyboard scores to have survived.
The American pianist intertwines them on one album, working out their textures to bring out their differences – the Codex Faenza’s quasi-declaratory, rhythmically-unstable dimension contrasting with Riley’s metronomic ostinatos – as well as their similitudes, in particular their rhythmic ambiguity.
