Recorded at Avatar Studios and Dubway Studios in New York, NY.

Throughout a career spanning six decades, the New York-based artist Monty Alexander has garnered acclaim for bridging American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica. For the new album, Alexander convened the band for its first studio recordings—primarily at New York City’s Avatar and Dubway. “Commander ‘Zander’s” reggae-fied one-love groove jazz party continues in high studio style on this rock-steady follow up to his 2011 Grammy®-nominated, chart topping Harlem-Kingston Express volume 1. The piano genius enters his 70th year with this infectiously grooving reggae/jazz fusion studio project, featuring great live bonus tracks.

They perform a mix of Alexander originals (which are themselves steeped in both Caribbean music and American jazz and R&B) and Alexander interpretations of classics, from the soul hits “People Make the World Go Round” and “What’s Going On” (here with the alias “Wa’a Gwan”) to Jimmy Cliff’s reggae landmark “The Harder They Come.”

Harlem-Kingston Express Vol. 2: The River Rolls On at once encapsulates the current moment in Alexander’s singular career and finds him returning to its earlier stages: both his teenage years, when he played on sessions helmed by pioneering reggae producers Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, Duke Reid and Chris Blackwell, and his first decades in the U.S., when he had the occasion to record and perform with icons such as Frank Sinatra, Milt Jackson and Ray Brown, among countless others.

Monty Alexander follows up his tribute to Tony Bennett with an homage to another classic jazz singer, Nat King Cole. Also recorded in New York City at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the same trio of Chicagoans Lorin Cohen on bass and drummer George Fludas, the veteran pianist seems more in his element with this artist’s repertoire, one that sharply defined his own sound and thinking about popular jazz. Though all of the tunes selected are not so closely linked to Cole’s hit parade songbook, the way Alexander plays them with subtlety and depth does reflect what made Cole the king in the late ’50s and early ’60s. With the immaculate sound and performance by this fine trio–not to mention that they don’t play Cole’s songbook by rote or by the numbers–it’s hard to fault the effort, heart, and soul behind a concept album that should delight many jazz listeners.

“It would be an over-simplification to characterize the group you are about to hear (or are perhaps now hearing) simply as the old Oscar Peterson Trio with Monty Alexander replacing the leader,” writes Leonard Feather in his liner notes to this album, after acknowledging that both bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis used to be part of the Peterson group. He’s right, of course, but it also would be incorrect to say there isn’t at least a feel of that earlier drum-less ensemble in this one. The chief difference, of course, is that the Jamaica-born Alexander is not Peterson; although less of his rhythmic flair is on display here than on other dates, he has his own personality, and it is far showier than Peterson’s. A second major difference is that Peterson was the leader of his trio and, as Feather also points out, “this is essentially a three-way partnership” in which each member gets to contribute more or less equally. The selections are a mixture of standards, most of them typical jazz springboards (though the 1940s pop hit “To Each His Own” seems to be new to the medium) with a Brown original and showcase, “Blues for Junior,” and another original, “Captain Bill,” that contains associations with Count Basie. Whether playing fast or slow, the three musicians interact well together, the younger Alexander holding his own with his veteran partners.

Over his long recording and performing career, Monty Alexander has displayed an ability to excel with any jazz or related genre. From swing to bop and hard bop, from reggae to mainstream jazz, you name it and Alexander has done it and done it well. On his latest and fourth album for the Telarc label, the veteran pianist takes time to show his appreciation and gratitude to his adopted home, America, through a series of songs in honor of people and images that shaped his attitude toward this country, whether it be cowboy movies he used to see as a youngster in Jamaica or the impression made upon him by a variety of American performers, including Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and others of like diversity. Nor has he forgotten his Caribbean roots with a highly rhythmic version of Al Green’s “Love and Happiness.” Alexander’s “Mack the Knife” is given a sort of gentile honky tonk burnish, while there is a bit of music hall piano in “Battle Hymn of the Republic” before he turns this patriotic song into a rousing swinger with gospel overtones. If this album needed a subtitle, it might be “Some of My Best Friends Are Singers,” picking up on the device successfully used by his once-playing partner, Ray Brown. Alexander is joined on four cuts by Freddy Cole, John Pizzarelli, Kevin Mahogany, and Cat. As good as this vocalizing is, it’s the infectious, bright playing of Alexander that lifts this album beyond the realm of the ordinary. Recommended.

Prior to becoming an ace mainstream jazz pianist in the U.S., native Jamaican Monty Alexander played on countless sessions at Studio One in Kingston — well before reggae, rocksteady, and even ska crossed the seas. Since 1998, secure in his jazz credentials, he has been reminding listeners of those roots, cranking out album after album and managing to unite jazz and reggae in a sometimes irresistible fusion. This time, Alexander reaches further back to pre-reggae Jamaican pop from the late ’60s/early ’70s, bringing along a guitar-slinging friend from the old days, Ernest Ranglin. On previous Jamaican-accented albums, Alexander sometimes sounded as if he was making an effort to hold back his prodigious technique in order to keep things simple. But here he sounds more comfortable paring down his playing to the basics while still throwing in an occasional sly quote or monster lick, now going more and more to his evocative melodica playing. Ranglin brings a brittle, staccato touch to everything he touches, and the rhythm section careens gently along, with only rare hints of a ska feel and without the overpowering dub-flavored bass of previous Alexander Jamaican outings like “Meets Sly and Robbie” and parts of “Goin’ Yard.” Desmond Dekker’s “Israelites,” one of the first genuine Jamaican hits in the U.S., moves and grooves much like the original while allowing for some jazz licks. Less well-known in America, perhaps, are some other choices like Ken Boothe’s “Freedom Street” and the Congos’ “Row Fisherman.” Moving up a bit on the time scale, Alexander and Ranglin include the Burning Spear signature tune “Marcus Garvey” and with heads bowed, they close the album with a dignified duo rendition of the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley’s “Redemption Song.” The six-channel surround mix on this hybrid SACD is simple and strikingly consistent, with Quentin Baxter’s drums and Junior Jazz’s scratching rhythm guitar coming from the rear channels, and Alexander, Ranglin, and occasional hand percussion coming from the front.

Pianist Monty Alexander’s “Ivory And Steel” group combines together bop-based jazz with Jamaican calypsoes and West Indian rhythms. On this quite enjoyable set, Alexander utilizes both Othello and Len “Boogsie” Sharpe on steel drums, either Marshall Wood or Bernard Montgomery on bass, drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith and the hand drums of Robert Thomas Jr. Alexander contributed four of the rhythmic originals which are joined by some Jamaican folk songs (including “Sly Mangoose”), Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” and a couple of obscurities. The accessible results are often memorable.

It would be nice to say that Ray Brown’s final recording session before his sudden and untimely death in the summer of 2002 resulted in a masterpiece, but although this trio session with guitarist Russell Malone and pianist Monty Alexander is perfectly serviceable, a masterpiece it is not. It’s a very attractive album — Brown was probably not capable of producing anything less as a leader — but it suffers just a bit from Alexander’s slightly sugary style and from the lack of a drummer. Recording without a drummer had been the latest thing in the jazz world for several years when this album was released, but it’s not entirely clear what the benefit of such an arrangement was supposed to be. On this album, the swing standard “Fly Me to the Moon” and Dexter Gordon’s boppish “Dexter’s Dex” would have had much more oomph with a sympathetic drummer on board (though on the latter, Malone’s Django Reinhardt-styled backup and Brown’s inimitable freight train rhythmic drive do go some distance toward making up for that lack). And the mid-tempo numbers seem to plod just a bit as well. But as always, there’s no questioning either the inventiveness of Brown’s solos or the rich sumptuousness of his enormous tone.

The formidable quartet of pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and drummer Connie Kay release a paramount recording with Lonely Woman. The distinguished performers pay tribute to jazz great Ornette Coleman with a chamber music inspired rendition of “Lonely Woman.” One of their strongest efforts, the album features spine-chilling improvisations and magnificent solos. Included are two exceptional compositions by Lewis entitled “Fugato” and “Trieste.” This pristine hi-res download is the only way to experience the historic quartet.

Having sponsored Ornette Coleman at the School of Jazz near Lennox, MA, pianist and composer John Lewis helped launch the controversial career of one of the last great innovators in jazz. Lewis’ support of the ragtag Texas native was somewhat unique in jazz circles at the time and even surprising, especially considering the gulf between the classical jazz formality of his group the Modern Jazz Quartet and Coleman’s radical notions of free improvisation. Nevertheless, Lewis not only saw in Coleman the first jazz genius since bebop’s Parker, Gillespie, and Monk, but put pay to the praise with the MJQ’s 1962 rendition of one of Coleman’s most famous numbers, “Lonely Woman.” (Along with Art Pepper’s 1960 version of “Tears Inside,” this was one of the earliest of Coleman covers done.) The 1962 Atlantic album of the same name turns out to be one of the band’s best efforts. Lewis and fellow MJQ members Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Connie Kaye capitalize on the dramatic theme of “Lonely Woman” while adding a bit of chamber music complexity to the mix. The quartet doesn’t take Coleman’s free form harmolodic theory to heart with a round of quixotic solos, but the group does spotlight the often overlooked strength of his compositional ideas. And while the MJQ further plies its knack for involved pieces on Lewis originals like “Fugato” and “Trieste,” the group also balances out the set with looser material more in tune with Jackson’s blues and swing sensibilities. A great disc that’s perfect for the curious jazz lover.

Blues on Bach is the genre-defying album by The Modern Jazz Quartet comprised of vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, drummer Connie Kay and bassist Percy Heath. The diversified album is a combination of original blues compositions and works by Bach adapted with bluesy melodies. This hi-res remastering lends new clarity and depth to one of the most legendary quartets.

This album has an interesting concept, alternating four original blues with five adaptations of melodies from classical works by Bach. The Modern Jazz Quartet had long been quite adept in both areas, and despite a certain lack of variety on this set (alternating back and forth between the two styles somewhat predictably), the music is largely enjoyable. Vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis (doubling here on harpsichord), bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay were still all very much in their musical prime during the 21st year of the MJQ’s existence.

European Concert, Vol.1 is an essential document to the quartet’s entrancing live energy. The celebrated work is a seamless blend of refined arrangements and masterful improvisation. The quartet comprised of John Lewis, Percy Heath, Connie Kay and Milt Jackson are in extraordinary form delivering unforgettable performances of “Django,” “I Should Care” and “Bluesology.” Captured with the pristine sonic depth of a hi-res recording, this definitive performance by the quartet is simply breathtaking.

Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt “Bags” Jackson’s vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay’s drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath’s bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis’s piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed at jazz’s boundaries from the outside, to create a music that swung without edges or fragmented harmonic structures. Instead — as this album perhaps more than any of their studio recordings exemplifies — they used concepts of time, space, meter, rhythm, and changes to weave together a seamless whole, where melody grounded the improvisation but never really restricted it. The kind of graceful counterpoint that exists between Lewis and Jackson here is instinctual at this time in 1960. The show included the finest moments of their early recording career in a live setting. One listen to “Django” will make your head swim, with its sparse rhythmic texture that is still driving and Lewis’ rag melody line when it encounters the pure stretch of the polytonal rhythms Jackson is laying down. If it weren’t for Heath the entire thing would become unglued, because he was the hinge on this set. Elsewhere on “I Should Care,” Lewis brings his solo down to a rudimentary three-finger patter-without chords that takes the line apart harmonically while never straying from anything in the architecture of the tune. Much later, on the encore “Round Midnight,” MJQ take Monk’s masterwork and turns it into a near rondo as time changes are constant in the first 16 bars. The front line melody blurs between Jackson and Lewis, as do harmonic counterpoint changes. While it’s true this was a tune nobody should have had to change, almost everyone who covered it did. Lewis, whose playing style couldn’t have been more antithetical to Monk’s, quotes Monk’s own solo in his and turns it into a piece of the melody near the end where Jackson is vibing chord changes and intervallic spaces. It leaves both audience and listeners breathless at the end of its all too brief three minutes and forty seconds.

The Comedy is an overwhelmingly brilliant concept album from the historic quartet, comprised of bassist Percy Heath, drummer Connie Kay, pianist John Lewis and vibraphonist Milt Jackson. The swinging infusion features seven scintillating compositions revolving around distinctive characters from an Italian comedy. Beautifully composed and artfully arranged, the album features one of the quartet’s finest performances ever with “Pulcinella”.

This is the type of album that led many bop purists to criticize the Modern Jazz Quartet (and John Lewis in particular) for being overly influenced by Western classical music. This album has seven of Lewis’ compositions, episodic works arranged in a suite that portrays characters from a fictional Italian comedy based in the 1500s. Singer Diahann Carroll guests fairly effectively on “La Cantatrice.” Despite being tied to a story, there are some strong improvisations from pianist Lewis and vibraphonist Milt Jackson on this unusual material. The release is not that essential but it is quite interesting.

The Modern Jazz Quartet plays a selection of original compositions and riveting standards on their release, The Sheriff. The album is infused with Latin and bossa nova rhythms. The work features four pieces by pianist John Lewis, including the blues-driven title track and the hauntingly beautiful “In a Crowd.” The quartet also performs works by Heitor Villa-Lobos (“Bachianas Brasileiras”) and Luiz Bonfa (“Carnival”). The quartet’s rich melodies and harmonious playing are strong and compelling.

Recorded in 1963, The Sheriff features the Modern Jazz Quartet in fine swinging form. The program is not as sharply focused as on some of the earlier Atlantic releases, but it is compelling nonetheless. There are four originals by pianist John Lewis, including the fleeting, bluesy title cut, and the moody, spacious “In a Crowd,” — originally composed for the 1961 film A Milanese Story. Its stepped-up time signature and series of phrases played by Milt Jackson grounds the tune in blues, but Lewis’ solo feels more like a solo trumpet breezing through the center. The set includes Heitor Villa-Lobos’ “Bachianas Brasileiras,” a classical piece the quartet first performed with guitarist Laurindo Almeida. Bassist Percy Heath is stellar here, playing both arco and pizzicato and alternately moving the work forward with deftness and precision. Lewis and Jackson engage in gorgeous counterpoint throughout. It’s knotty, but exotic and beautiful. Another Latin-based work here is Luiz Bonfa’s brilliant “Carnival,” which closes the set. Jackson’s melodic interplay with Connie Kay’s brushwork is subtle and rich, moving through a series of verses before Jackson takes it to the blues in his solo. Lewis keeps the pulse as Heath underscores the backbeat.
