2014年11月発表の前作「The BKW Show!!」

Texas-born singer songwriter Sara K. is well known to audiophiles for her superb albums released by Chesky Records. Her latest, Made In The Shade comes from a German audiophile label Stockfisch Records. Like good wine, this one has it all–that inner glow, that shining light that is the true sign of real art. Guitars, fretless bass and exotic instruments including the concert harp and various percussions form an ideal backdrop for the singer, with Sara K. sounding articulate to the highest degree.

Sara K’s songs reflect folk-blues, rock and jazz sensibilities, and together with her intelligent lyrics they are in a class by themselves. As is the case with her prior recordings, Made In The Shade is beautifully recorded with stunning, vivid details that move the listener. If you care about good sound and have a good stereo system, you will be able to savor all the details, textures and nuances of the wonderful performance.

“Hell or High Water” (Stockfisch Records), Sara K.’s second album produced outside of the US, is not only a brilliant poetic and musical achievement. It is a great sounding recording as well. This SACD yields 10 previously unreleased songs, featuring the late Chris Jones on guitar and dobro. It is Texas’ Singer-Songwriter 10th CD to date.

The songs of this album once more open up Sara K.’s musical universe, or as you will: her soul. She is a brave woman who goes where ever she wants and takes the listener with her. For the former you need conviction, for the latter seduction. Her often imagistic lyrics are singular in their emotional intensity – easy to accept but strong in their content – a velvet hand in a boxing glove which you would like to send you into the realm of dreams.

Sara K is an international hidden treasure. She is a superb singer with a range of emotion in her voice that will melt the coldest heart. She is a superb songwriter with an endless capacity to write a song that you will know in seconds and love for years. In fact “superb” seems to be the bottom line. Can anyone explain why there isn’t a Sara K CD in every collection? Hell or High Water is Sara K at her very very best. – PBS Radio Australia

Play On Words – a musical and lyrical masterpiece, with Sara K. on vocals and four string guitar – makes its way through a number of styles, such as country and blues, and invigorates these rather staid genres with a new content and meaning. Chesky Records, 2001.

From the time she first performed in front of an audience when she was 17 years old, singer/songwriter Sara K. knew she wanted to live her life making music. She followed her dream and stayed true to her desire, despite the fact that demand for acoustic solo performers was falling off as the end of the ’70s approached. Several avenues remained open to her, including fronting her own band, studio work, and backing country music artists, which she did in her hometown of Dallas, TX. She also found work locally singing jingles. From her childhood years on, music played an important part in her life. Her mother belonged to a choir at church, while her father sang bass as part of a barbershop quartet. She first took up the guitar at the age of 15, although her instrument wasn’t the standard one on which most youths begin. She started with a basic flamenco guitar and added four strings meant for a bass. The resulting hybrid didn’t produce notes as low as those normally produced by a bass, yet they were definitely lower than those made by a guitar.
After the early years in Texas, she took her band, Sara K. and the Boys Without Sleep, to Los Angeles and New Mexico. Beginning in 1973, she led the band for about ten years and she followed that up by spending more than two years on tour with country singerGary Nunn. The experience was a good one, but she longed to concentrate on crafting songs and performing her own compositions. She settled down in Santa Fe to work on her songs, putting together an album that eventually became Gypsy Alley and was released by Mesa/Bluemoon Records in 1982. The New Mexico Music Industry Coalition honored the release with an award for Best Album. Chesky Records signed her to a contract, and Sara K. went on to release four well-received albums: Hobo, Tell Me I’m Not Dreamin’, Play on Words, and Closer Than They Appear. The singer/songwriter toured Germany in 1997 with Hui Cox, an arranger and guitar player. That same year, she also contributed to the soundtrack for The Postman. Two years later, No Cover was issued featuring Chuck Mangione on one of the tracks. The live album was recorded in New York City inside St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, making the most of the soaring interior’s dynamite acoustics. What Matters followed in 2001.

#293 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time

First released in 1972, this compilation album remains one of the favorites in Simon & Garfunkel’s catalog. In the same month that the Greatest Hits was released, Simon & Garfunkel performed a reunion concert to benefit the presidential campaign of Sen. George McGovern. Rather than release a straightforward greatest hits album to coincide with the concert, they instead opted to include live versions of some of their most personal songs.

At that time, Simon & Garfunkel had not yet released a live album, and the inclusion of those few live tracks helped push the album to the Top 5 on the U.S. albums chart. The Greatest Hits‘ success was all the more remarkable because Simon & Garfunkel’s previous five studio albums were still selling at a strong pace, indicating how much they were missed since breaking up two years earlier.

This album has had over three decades to make an impact, and it says something for its staying power that, in the face of more recent, more generously programmed, and better mastered compilations of the duo’s work, it remains one of the most popular parts of the Simon & Garfunkel catalog — which doesn’t mean it isn’t fraught with frustrations for anyone buying it. Its very existence is something of a fluke — in the spring of 1972, the five original Simon & Garfunkel albums, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM, Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme, Bookends and Bridge Over Troubled Water, were still selling almost as well as they had in the 1960s; indeed, Bridge Over Troubled Water had carved out a seemingly permanent place for itself on the charts for years; and between the continued radio play of the duo’s biggest hits, and the inevitable discovery of their catalog by successive new waves of junior high and high school students, those five LPs stood among the most profitable parts of the Columbia Records back catalog, rivaling Bob Dylan’s much larger library in sheer numbers. Columbia might have gone years longer without compiling the duo’s hits, but then, in June of 1972, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel did something totally unexpected — in the midst of Simon’s still-emerging solo career (and the careful crafting of his identity as a single act), and Garfunkel’s re-identification of himself as an actor, the two reunited for one night, to do a benefit performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden for the presidential candidacy of Senator George McGovern. (The latter event also took on a life of its own, as the first widely available Simon & Garfunkel concert bootleg, with terrible sound but capturing for posterity what had to be one of the funniest moments of their stage history, when Simon, attempting to suppress his laughter, remarks in connection with requests being called out, that someone “wants to hear “Voices of Old People” from Bookends). The performance was widely publicized, both before and after the event — McGovern had captured the hearts and imaginations of tens of millions of high school and college students around the United States that spring, and this reviewer can attest to the fact that millions of people who were not at that show felt like they were there in spirit. It was inevitable that Columbia would want to put out a new Simon & Garfunkel release to take advantage of the renewed attention and excitement surrounding the duo, and they probably could have gotten away with a straight greatest-hits collection; but thanks to some inspiration and cooperation between the label and the artists, Greatest Hits went far beyond that. Nine of the tracks on the 14-song LP did, indeed, comprise the duo’s biggest hits — including “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “The Sounds of Silence” — in their familiar studio versions; but interspersed between them were previously unheard live recordings of “For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her,” “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” “Homeward Bound,” and “Kathy’s Song,” plus an alternate take of “America.” At that time, Simon & Garfunkel had never released a live album, and as it happened, at least four of those five were among the most personal songs in the duo’s repertory — songs that millions of fans responded to individually (as opposed to the mass appeal of the pair’s hit singles). The fact that they were present as excellent live performances made the appeal of this record irresistible to fans at every level, from the most casual to the most serious and dedicated. It was a sign of just how much they were loved and missed (and, perhaps, needed?) that without anything but that one unrecorded and untelevised benefit show to support its release, the record peaked at number five on the Billboard charts. And a couple of years later, it joined their original five albums as a perennial catalog favorite. And it still holds up — it touches all the right buttons, providing an overview of the duo’s most popular songs, but with those live cuts and the “America” outtake to make it essential in its own right, separate from the overview — indeed, it manages to present both the duo’s broader history, and their most widely appealing music, and their most intimate work, all seamlessly; only some interesting and ambitious singles that either hadn’t stood the test of time (“Fakin’ It”) or were artistic blind alleys (“The Dangling Conversation”), were missing, along with “Punky’s Dilemma,” a perennial FM radio favorite that lay just below Columbia Records’ and the duo’s radar. All of that is the good part about this collection, which ought to get an unqualified rave — the bad part, and the reason that it doesn’t get that rave, is the sound quality, which was indifferent on the LP and worse on the CD, with sound that audibly cracks on parts of “The Sounds of Silence” and some of the other early studio cuts; Greatest Hits has begged for a sonic upgrade, and remastering from better sources, for two decades, and Columbia somehow missed the obvious opportunity to do this as part of either its Mastersound and SACD catalogs. It’s the one caveat that anyone buying it should bear in mind. –Bruce Eder

The Graduate is an album of songs from the soundtrack of Mike Nichols’ movie The Graduate, featuring many songs from the folk-rock duo Simon & Garfunkel as well as several instrumental pieces by Dave Grusin. The music meshed perfectly with the themes of the film, the album topped the charts, and it introduced Simon & Garfunkel to a wider audience.

The soundtrack to Mike Nichols’ The Graduate remains a key musical document of the late ’60s, although truth be told, its impact was much less artistic than commercial (and, for that matter, more negative than positive). With the exception of its centerpiece track, the elegiac and oft-quoted “Mrs. Robinson” – which only appears here as a pair of fragments – the Simon & Garfunkel songs that comprise much of the record (a series of Dave Grusin instrumentals round it out) appeared on the duo’s two preceding LPs; Nichols’ masterstroke was to transplant those songs into his film, where they not only meshed perfectly with the story’s themes of youthful rebellion and alienation (and the inner life of the central character, Dustin Hoffman’s Benjamin Braddock) but also heralded a new era in movie music centered around the appropriation of past pop hits, a marketing gimmick that grew exponentially in the years to follow. The Graduate soundtrack, then, merits the dubious honor of being the earliest and one of the most successful Hollywood repackagings of “found” pop songs, a formula essentially based around coercing fans to purchase soundtrack albums filled with material they already own in order to acquire the occasional new track or two.

The duo recorded their first album as Simon & Garfunkel in 1964, producing a record that sounds different from the music they released in later years. Between the release of Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. and their second album, Simon & Garfunkel would score a major folk-rock hit with The Sound Of Silence. This album includes the original acoustic version of that song, along with early signs of Paul Simon’s growing songwriting ability on favorites like “Sparrow” and “The Sounds of Silence”.

Wednesday Morning, 3 AM doesn’t resemble any other Simon & Garfunkel album, mostly because their sound here was fundamentally different from that of the chart-topping duo that emerged a year later. Their first record together since their days as the teen harmony duo Tom & Jerry, the album was cut in March 1964, at a time when both Simon and Garfunkel were under the spell of folk music. As it had in 1957 with “Hey, Schoolgirl,” their harmonizing here came out of the Everly Brothers’ playbook, but some new wrinkles had developed — Paul Simon was just spreading his wings as a serious songwriter and shares space with other contemporary composers. The album opens with a spirited (if somewhat arch) rendition of Gibson and Camp’s gospel/folk piece “You Can Tell the World,” on which the duo’s joyous harmonizing overcomes the intrinsic awkwardness of two Jewish guys from Queens, New York doing this repertory. Also present is Ian Campbell’s “The Sun Is Burning,” a topical song about nuclear annihilation that Simon heard on his first visit to England as an itinerant folksinger the year before. But the dominant outside personality on the album is that of Bob Dylan — his “Times They Are A-Changing” is covered, but his influence is obvious on the oldest of the Simon originals here, “He Was My Brother.” Simon’s first serious, topical song, dealing with the death of a freedom rider — and dedicated to Simon’s slain Queens College classmate Andrew Jacobs — it was what first interested Columbia Records producer Tom Wilson in Simon & Garfunkel. By the time the album was recorded, however, Simon had evolved beyond Dylan’s orbit and developed a unique songwriting voice of his own, though he still had some distance to go. His other originals betray the artifice of an English major at work, sometimes for better, as on “Sparrow” and the original, all-acoustic release of “The Sound of Silence,” and at times for worse, on the half-beautiful but too-precious title song (which he would re-write more successfully as “Somewhere They Can’t Find Me”). There are also a pair of traditional songs, a beautifully harmonized rendition of “Peggy-O” — which they probably picked up in Greenwich Village, or from recordings by Dylan or Joan Baez — and “Go Tell It On the Mountain,” both of which fit well into the zeitgeist of the folk revival. The record didn’t sell on its original release, however, appearing too late in the folk revival to attract much attention — Bob Dylan was already taking that audience to new places by adding electric instruments to his sound. But the seeds of the duo’s future success were planted when, months after the album had been given up for dead — and the duo had split up — the all-acoustic rendition of “The Sound of Silence” started getting radio play on its own in some key markets, which possessed to producer Wilson to try and adapt it to the new sound, overdubbing an electric band.
