With the world premiere recording of the environmental oratorio Earth Vigil, GRAMMY® Award-winning choir Conspirare and conductor Craig Hella Johnson celebrate their long-time artistic relationship with composer Robert Kyr. Earth Vigil tells a tender and moving story of two characters and their dramatic journey amidst great challenges caused by the intensifying climate crisis. This extraordinary new work invites us to remember the wonder and beauty of the natural world and of our lives together on this planet. As it comes to a close, the final scene compels us forward with a profoundly hopeful and emboldening song. Soprano Awet Andemicael and baritone Stephen Lancaster give voice to the leading characters.Robert Kyr has a broad tonal style that fits the clean lines of the Conspirare chorus, and he has worked with that group on several occasions. Earth Vigil isn’t the first “environmental oratorio” he has composed for the group; it was preceded by A Time for Life in 2009. One attractive feature of the work is that it is a true oratorio, with a chorus embodying and commenting on the larger themes and soloists who sing recitatives and arias; they converse about the degradation of the environment, but there isn’t really a plot as such. The soloists are a writer, Alesha (a soprano), and Tallis, a scientist, photographer, and videographer (a baritone). Some of Kyr’s works include world music influences, but here, his language is more stripped-down, in keeping with the impassioned nature of the work. The text of the opening movements, apparently by Kyr himself, although some of it is modeled on other sources, draws on Native American ideas. The work has a notably positive conclusion. What one will think of this will depend on one’s basic sympathy for the musical style, which can easily be established with a bit of sampling. As usual with Conspirare and its soloists and accompanying musicians (there are seven here), the performances are first-rate. – James Manheim

When looking at Erik Honoré’s musical credits, it’s remarkable to discover that Heliographs is his debut solo offering. He has shared billing with Jan Bang — his co-artistic director of the Punkt Festival and longtime musical partner — on 2012’s Uncommon Deities, and has played prominent roles on two of his other albums, including …And Poppies from Kandahar and Narrative from the Subtropics. Honoré — also a celebrated author — has also contributed to over 50 recordings by David Sylvian, Eivind Aarset, and Arve Henriksen, to name a few. The latter two return the favor with appearances here. Honoré’s sound design is implicit in his nocturnal musicality. Percussionist Ingar Zach is his most frequent contributor, but vocalist Sidsel Endresen appears on three tracks; her voice seems to be the album’s thematic center in that it grounds a mix that is often gauzy, deliberately submersed in atmosphere. On set opener “Navigators,” she uses her singular talent for improvisation, creating sounds that are obviously sourced in the human voice, but feel more like elocutions of an alien language. Honoré’s synth bass, Bang’s shimmering samples, and the watery, almost bubbling synths are woven through sonically manipulated field recordings. The melody is more implied than concrete on this track, but it holds the listener, suspended in its delicate strangeness. On “Sanctuary,” subtle glitches, bells, and Honoré’s synth bassline lay a foundation for samples of plucked cellos and violins to paint the margins surrounding her lithe vocal. “Red Cafe” features violinist Jeffrey Bruinsma, accompanied by a synth bassline, string samples, and traces of flutes and other woodwinds buried just under the surface. On “Pioneer Trail,” Bang’s expressionistic rhythm programming carries Honoré’s minimal backmasked keyboards and basses amid distorted sonic washes. On the brief “Strife,” the album offers its only sense of drama and dissonance. Henriksen’s trumpet squeals with unwound basses and skittering synths (the latter playing an Arabic melody) amid clattering percussion. But it is over so quickly that when “Sanctuary Revisited” commences, it is nearly forgotten. Here string and wind samples caress Endresen’s lyric singing, weaving together both chamber and folk music in her melody. Heliographs is, like most of Honoré’s collaborative work, largely subtle; it comes from the quiet and returns there. But his aesthetic vision contains direction, an implied inner sense and form. These 37 minutes go by all too quickly, leaving the listener desiring more. – Thom Jurek

Paul Huang and Helen Huang have been exploring the repertoire for violin and piano for now a decade. As a way of celebrating their fruitful and enriching collaboration, they have devised this album as an ingenious game of mirroring. The title of this second album for naïve is not accidental, as the two musicians offer highly diverse perspectives. This new recording focuses first on two sonatas composed by Francis Poulenc (1942-1943) and Sergei Prokofiev (1938-1946) during the second world war of the 20th century, respectively at the opening and closing of this album. Between these two pieces, Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt (1978), a page with ethereal lines, a moment of introspection and calm that becomes a space for contemplation and reflection necessary in this otherwise dense and angular programme.Poulenc composed his Sonata as a response to fascism and dedicated it to the memory of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, shot in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. The composer imagines fleeting melodies, punctuated by bold contrasts. The irregularity of the phrases, the sudden pauses, the mischievous fantasy intertwined with moments of discord, seek to transcribe the emotional and societal whirlwind that was the War, right down to these violin pizzicatos at the end of the movement evoking both the bullets of a rifle and the guitar, this iconic instrument of Lorca’s country. War also feeds Prokofiev’s inspiration, in the abrasive and anguished din of the battle that the second movement imitated, in the lullaby of the third movement that dreams of a better future, as in the folk dance, lively, joyful, in reality so dramatic that its climax is a metaphor for chaos. This album encapsulates music’s profound ability to offer a poignant reflection on the past while resonating deeply with our present. In a world that often feels as tumultuous as the one that birthed these works, music offers a space for contemplation and connection.

In this maelstrom of emotions, Paul Huang and Helen Huang have grown as musicians. This new stage in their musical journey has required them to refine their sense of contrasts to connect with the rawest of human emotions. The two musicians have reinvented their duo, they have now reached a crucial moment where modesty turns into delicacy, fierceness into ferocity, tact into grace. A reflection of an ongoing journey, Mirrors is above all a mirror of their absolute mutual understanding.

The two works recorded on this album come from a creative period at the beginning of the 1930s. In terms of style, with his works linked to basic tonalities, Weigl drew on the sound realm of late Romanticism, from whose aesthetics he never departed in favour of more progressive contemporary trends. His knack for orchestration shows both in the hymnic climaxes as well as the chamber music-like passages. Weigl never lived to hear any performances of either his Third Symphony or the Symphonic Prelude and, like so many of his larger works, these scores were not rediscovered until there was a resurgence of interest in Weigl’s music decades later. This release allows listeners to hear both works for the first time on record.

Erik Honoré releases the final album in a trilogy that started with ”Heliographs” (2014) and ”Unrest” (2017). On ”Triage”, Honoré’s sonic collages are constructed from contributions by a stellar ensemble: Sidsel Endresen, Nils Petter Molvær, Arve Henriksen, David Toop, Eivind Aarset, Bjørn Charles Dreyer, Jan Bang, Kirke Karja, Mats Eilertsen and Anders Engen.Erik Honoré’s new solo album emerges as an intriguing exploration of sound, narrative and emotion, intertwining advanced sample-based techniques with literary inspiration and the distinct musical virtuosity of artists like Nils Petter Molvær, Arve Henriksen, and Sidsel Endresen. The compositions are carefully woven together by Honoré, who in addition to live-sampling and other laptop based strategies also worked extensively with synthesizers, treatments and field recordings. Although most of the album is created by Honoré’s restructuring and rearranging of instruments and voices that seldom existed in the same room at the same time, the album maintains the seamless quality that he always strives for in his productions.

Delving deeper into the realm of artistic fusion, ”Triage” also intricately weaves text extracts from writers such as Ezra Pound, Helen Coale Crew and Emily Dickinson, alongside poignant passages from World War 1 medical manuals, and texts by Erik Honoré himself. The texts served as starting points for all nine ”Triage” compositions, although only fragments have survived on tracks like ”The Bone Setter” and ”The Cantos” – the rest has been sacrificed after serving as inspiration for the soundscapes. But in some pieces, the texts are still featured in their entirety: Two Emiliy Dickinson poems, a poem by the lesser known American writer Helen Coale Crew, and the two pieces where Jan Bang sings Erik Honoré’s own lyrics.

This amalgamation creates a rich, metaphor-laden narrative that explores the often-blurred lines between dissonance and harmony that is also evident in the music. “Triage,” a term traditionally associated with the process of prioritizing patient care on the battlefield, here serves as a metaphorical framework for the album’s exploration of themes such as urgency, recovery, and the discernment of what we hold dear amidst chaos. Each track is a meticulously crafted soundscape where historical and contemporary voices converge, offering a reflective space for listeners to navigate the intricate layers of sound and meaning.

Erik Honoré’s approach invites listeners to explore the interplay between narrative and sound. During the composition, production and mixing phase – always parallel processes in Honoré’s work – Honoré explored the writings, the times, and the turbulent life stories of the featured authors, marked by personal struggles, artistic and ideological contradictions, and lasting brilliance. This inspiration, concrete and metaphorical, infused the music with a raw, authentic energy that should resonate deeply with contemporary listeners.

Through ”Triage,” Erik Honoré invites us on an audacious journey across temporal and emotional landscapes, where the avant-garde meets echoes of the past. The album is not merely a collection of musical ideas, but a carefully curated experience designed to challenge the listener – a profound, multi-dimensional exploration of the human condition.

Get ready for a massive injection of joyful, life-affirming rock ‘n’ roll. The truly sensational Bobbie Dazzle has arrived, in an explosion of glitter and guaranteed good times. Conceived and brought to life by multi-talented singer Siân Greenway, Bobbie Dazzle is hell-bent on bringing the fun, the colour and the freedom back to rock ‘n’ roll. The 21st century glam rock party starts here.“When it comes to performing, my personality is quite silly and upbeat, so I feel like I can show who I really am with Bobbie Dazzle,” Greenway explains. “Even though it’s under a pseudonym, it’s genuinely me, so that’s what I want to put out there. All the joy that I feel has been put into this, and now I’m able to express that in a creative way. It’s funny, I was scrolling through my Facebook the other day, and I got a notification from something that I’d posted five years and I just said, ‘I want to start a glam rock band!’ It made me chuckle because I’ve got there and now I’m doing it!”

Inspired by the seminal likes of Bowie, T. Rex, Suzi Quatro and The Sweet, Bobbie Dazzle’s debut album Fandabidozi is an invigorating rush of massive tunes, infectious riffs and bright-eyed pop-rock bombast. As an antidote to the enervating negativity that surrounds us at this moment in history, it could hardly be more perfect. For Greenway, who also sings with UK doom mavens Alunah, adopting a new musical identity has been both personally rewarding and emotionally crucial.

“I started Bobbie Dazzle when my sister passed away, because I desperately needed an outlet to keep me going,” she says. “And it worked! This has shown me that you don’t have to sit in a dark place when you’re going through a dark time. I wrote a bunch of songs at home, made some demos and them got some people together to play. The musicians are incredibly talented people from around the Black Country and Birmingham. We did our first show about eight months ago, and yeah, here we are now!”

A celebratory ten-song time warp that plunders the ‘70s and drags them kicking and screaming into the here and now, Fandabidozi is absolutely guaranteed to put smiles on faces. From the hard rockin’ riot of the opening Lightning Fantasy, to the pop-psych perfection of the closing Flowers On Mars, the first Bobbie Dazzle album works hard to lighten up our lives. Brash and heavy on the classic glam shuffle of Revolution, and deliriously anthemic on the fiery debut single: Back To The City, it covers a huge amount of musical ground while staying true to the principles of ‘70s glam rock: big riffs, bigger hooks and a prevailing sense that listeners have been hurled into a spinning kaleidoscope of pure euphoria. Although far too young to have experienced glam’s first wave, Bobbie Dazzle’s music is steeped in the tricks and tropes of that exalted era.

“My parents were glam rock and punk people in the ‘70s, so their influence on me was pretty big,” she notes. “My dad was more into American stuff, like New York Dolls and Iggy Pop, and my mum was more into Bowie and T. Rex, so I got both sides of it. Growing up, I discovered more for myself, and my favourite band is probably The Sweet. They’ve been a huge influence on this. I also like Chicory Tip and Slade and these British staples of glam rock. They’re joyous and fun and not to be taken too seriously, but they’re also very interesting musically. You can be ridiculous and still have really good riffs and proggy hooks, you know?”

At its core, Fandabidozi is an album designed to lift spirits. For the enigmatic Miss Dazzle herself, her first album comes from a deeply personal place and a strong desire to fulfil creative ambitions that first sprang to life when she was a child. As she explains, Fandabidozi is also a personal tribute to her late father, whose taste in music was so influential on her own evolution.

“The album opener is called Lightning Fantasy and there’s a really cool story behind it,” she says. “My dad passed away in 2003, when I was 11 years old, but when my sister passed away, I ended up clearing out her house, and I stumbled across these records of my dad’s. He had a Bob Dylan album, and when I opened the sleeve, all these pieces of paper fell out. I was like, ‘What the hell is this?’ and it was lyrics that my dad had written when he was 17. There were about five songs in there – there was one called Castrator and I felt I couldn’t really doing anything with that! But there was Lightning Fantasy, and that song is all my dad’s lyrics. I felt it was a nod from him, saying ‘Do this! I’m proud of you!’ So I basically dedicated the album to my dad… and plagiarised his lyrics! [Laughs]”

Bursting at the seams with absurdly catchy and memorable songs, Fandabidozi harks back to the days of Get It On and Blockbuster without ever sounding like a purely retro exercise. Ultimately, glam rock is a timeless force, and more vital now than ever, and its studio tricks and songwriting quirks still resonate today. Bobbie Dazzle is proudly breathing new life into this often ignored genre, and making it sound even cooler and more exuberant than before.

“It’s been interesting because when you talk about those classic records and the sounds they used, they were a big influence on me when it came to record this album,” says Greenway. “Like the doubling of vocal tracks with a millisecond slap-back delay – it creates a really interesting sound, so it’s been great to see the staples of what these bands did, and how it’s still relevant now, and how these things can still elevate the music. Obviously I’ve stuck handclaps on absolutely everything too!”

Armed with an uproarious debut album and tunes that are manifestly built to last, Bobbie Dazzle intends to hit the ground running. When Fandabidozi is released into the wild by esteemed UK imprint Rise Above Records, its creator’s mission to spread a little happiness as loudly as possible will have reached its first major milestone. Buzzing with positivity and alive with mad-eyed, glam rock mania, Siân Greenway is just getting started.

“I can’t wait to tour and play on some big stages, so myself & my live band can strut our stuff and blow people away! It’s all about growing & that will mean touring the album, working hard, keep on pushing, and that main goal of spreading some glitz and glam across the world. Life is too serious to be taken too seriously. You have to find the joy!”

For this third instalment in his survey of orchestral works by Ruth Gipps, Rumon Gamba, conducting the BBC Philharmonic, is joined by the horn soloist Martin Owen. The album opens with Gipps’s Coronation Procession. The piece depicts the journey of the Crown(s), perhaps as observed from the Royal Coach, culminating in the entry to Westminster Abbey. Written in January 1953, the piece was not used at the coronation, and instead first performed in September 1954 in Melbourne, Australia. Ambarvalia is a memorial tribute of 1988 by Gipps to the composer and colleague Adrian Cruft, who had died in February 1987. Gipps wrote the Horn Concerto in 1968 for her son, Lance Baker. The piece was later championed by Frank Lloyd, who gave a BBC broadcast in 1982. Here the virtuoso Martin Owen brings the work vividly to life. The Lake District was the inspiration for the ‘Impression’ Cringlemire Garden, a pastoral miniature for string orchestra. Dated September 1942, the First Symphony is a direct reflection of the horrors of war. The work demonstrates Gipps’s personal voice, and features some wonderful writing for winds.

During the mid-’80s, Nik Kershaw managed to score a handful of pop hits and, in doing so, establish himself as a profitable commercial songwriter. Kershaw began his musical career by learning to play guitar when he was a teenager. In 1974, he joined his first band, Half Pint Hogg, which played nothing but Deep Purple covers. However, his musical ideas were not limited to heavy metal; after he left school, he joined a jazz-funk band called Fusion. Fusion released one album, ‘Til I Hear From You, in the late ’70s. Once the group broke up, Kershaw signed to MCA Records with the help of Nine Below Zero’s manager, Micky Modern. Kershaw released his first solo single, “I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” in 1983; it peaked at number 47 on the U.K. charts. His next single, “Wouldn’t It Be Good,” hit number five in the U.K. and charted at number 46 in the U.S. Its success led to stardom in Britain for Kershaw; “I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” was re-released in summer of 1984 and charted at number two, leading to a series of hit singles. Released in 1986, his third album, Radio Musicola, wasn’t as successful as his previous albums. Kershaw subsequently retreated from performing and recording regularly. Although he released The Works in 1990, Kershaw’s main musical contribution since the late ’80s is as a songwriter; he’s written several songs for other artists, including Chesney Hawke’s hit single “The One and Only.” After years of writing for others, Kershaw returned with his own 15 Minutes for Pyramid Records.

In this work I wanted to recall the idea of “Concept Album”, a journey through the strings where I brought together authors and styles from different eras, often distant from each other, valorizing, however, the music they wrote and demonstrating, first of all to myself, that with the necessary sensitivity and competence, ideas and compositional approaches can convincingly coexist, even apparently distant ones. A journey divided into eighteen songs that I hope will excite you as it did and continues to do to me every time I relive it, playing it or listening to it.
