I was lucky that my parents sent me to music school or saw the sense behind it and invested the money for it. After that I had the necessary environment, so friends who made music with me, a teacher who encouraged me. Since I’m 14 music is more or less my life elixir and it took its way, I only practiced, so I was accepted at some point at a music university. Even if you still don’t know what it means to be a professional musician (haha) everything was clear from there on. I can’t imagine anything better either. It’s also a great privilege.

The Singapore Symphony and its music director Hans Graf present a recording of Józef Kozłowski’s Requiem, together with the Singapore Symphony Chorus & Youth Choir, as well as a quartet of outstanding soloists: Olga Peretyatko (soprano), Olesya Petrova (mezzo-soprano), Boris Stepanov (tenor) and Christoph Seidl (bass). The Requiem (1798) was commissioned to Kozłowski by the abdicated King Stanisław of Poland, and can be perceived as a requiem not just for the monarch, but for the entire Polish nation, absorbed by the Russian state during the 1780s. Interestingly, the work was also heard during the funeral of Tsar Alexander I of Russia, in a different version with heavier orchestration and choruses for more drama. The current recording uses a new edition created by conductor Graf himself, realizing the intimate character of the original 1798 version. Composed just 7 years after Mozart’s famous Requiem, the work is rooted in Viennese Classicism, yet also adumbrates nineteenth-century developments, with a subtle Slavonic tinge. This revival is a gem to anyone interested in music from the early Romantic era.

The Singapore Symphony returns to Pentatone after their acclaimed recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Locatelli’s Labirinto armonico starring violinist Chloe Chua (2023). Hans Graf, the Singapore Symphony Chorus & Youth Choir and the vocal quartet all make their Pentatone debut.Józef Kozłowski (1757 or 1759-1831) was a Polish-born composer who moved to St. Petersburg and began working there after Poland came under Russian rule at the end of the 18th century. This Requiem was commissioned in advance of his own death in 1798 by the last king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Stanisław II August. It was performed again in 1825 in a revised version by Kozłowski himself after the death of the Russian Czar Alexander I, who was also the titular ruler of Poland. The 1825 version was recorded in 1988 by a Soviet choir and orchestra, but this recording of the 1798 version, unearthed and led by Singapore Symphony conductor Hans Graf, is apparently a world premiere. Parts of the work are exceptionally beautiful, and, in the words of annotators Edward C. Yong and Leon Chia, “It is hard not to see in the music an image of the Polish nation (which was not to see independence again for over 120 years) submitting itself to Fate.” Sample the Tuba mirum, which seems just a step away from Berlioz and receives a wonderful performance from bass soloist Christoph Seidl (all the soloists are very strong). The final parts of the mass, darkening from E flat major to E flat minor in the last movement, are hauntingly beautiful and do live up to Yong and Chia’s contention. Some of the orchestration in this earlier version seems thin, and it might be instructive to have a new recording of the later version. However, any reading is most welcome, for the piece qualifies as a neglected masterwork. The Singapore Symphony Chorus is kept curiously back in the mix by PentaTone’s engineers working at the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore, but the singing, in general, is very strong. A must for lovers of Polish and early Russian music, this is a moving score for anyone. – James Manheim

Henryk Mikołaj Górecki was a Polish composer of contemporary classical music. According to critic Alex Ross, no recent classical composer has had as much commercial success as Górecki. He became a leading figure of the Polish avant-garde during the post-Stalin cultural thaw. His Anton Webern-influenced serialist works of the 1950s and 1960s were characterized by adherence to dissonant modernism and influenced by Luigi Nono, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Krzysztof Penderecki and Kazimierz Serocki. He continued in this direction throughout the 1960s, but by the mid-1970s had changed to a less complex sacred minimalist sound, exemplified by the transitional Symphony No. 2 and the Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs). This later style developed through several other distinct phases, from such works as his 1979 Beatus Vir, to the 1981 choral hymn Miserere, the 1993 Kleines Requiem für eine Polka and his requiem Good Night.

Nenei is an Argentinean singer and songwriter. She rose to fame in late 2019 with her multi-streamed debut single, That’s What I Like.

Nenei began her career by participating in the platinum album Jazz Sexiest Ladies. She later worked with The Cooltrane Quartet on a special version of “Fly Me To The Moon” that would go on to be included in a number of compilations. Nenei most recently joined a very different proposition by joining forces with producer Willie Cooper to record alternative versions of some of the biggest hits of all times. Since its creation in 2016, the Fortuny Trio has cultivated the search for open and honest communication between musicians and audiences. Formed by Joel Bardolet (violin), Pau Codina (cello) and Marc Heredia (piano), it performs regularly in concert halls such as the Palau de la Música Catalana or L’Auditori de Barcelona and at festivals such as the Festival International de Musique de Wissembourg or the award-winning Bachcelona and is nourished by the intense individual activity that its members carry out in orchestras and chamber groups mainly in central Europe.Its main uniqueness lies in the fact of highlighting little-known repertoires as well as the work they do with living composers such as Joan Magrané, Ramon Humet or Josep Maria Guix and musicians such as Jonathan Brown. In this sense, the Fortuny Trio’s programs are born from the combination of playing works from the great universal repertoire with pieces that are discoveries that they often interpret appealing to the variable geometry that their own training allows. Echoes (Seed Music, 2024) is their debut album, a record in which they capture their interpretation of the Trio for piano in A minor, op. 50 by PI Tchaikovsky, as well as Three Nocturnes by Joan Magrané – composer from Reus and fellow generation – and an elegy by Josep Suk.

In autumn 2024, the winner of the Fanny Mendelssohn Prize 2024, bassoonist Emanuel Blumin-Sint, will release his debut album on the ES-DUR label. With “Leading Bassoon,” Emanuel Blumin-Sint showcases the diverse capabilities of the bassoon, expanding its repertoire and playing techniques. His great ambition is to establish the bassoon as a leading solo instrument. On his album, he combines works by Bach, Mozart, Paganini, Allard, and Villa-Lobos with contemporary compositions by Yuri Povolotsky and Valentin Silvestrov, which are dedicated to him. In Silvestrov’s composition, Emanuel himself handles the piano pedalling. Flautist Matvey Demin and cellist Alexey Stadler are Emanuel’s partners in the duo works.

‘There are works that are like a bridge built across the absolute, an attempt to go beyond Time’. So wrote – signing his name with the initials V.H. – the author of the article that appeared on 1 April 1941 in Le Lumignon, the newspaper of Stalag VIII A in Görlitz, Silesia, the labour camp where Olivier Messiaen was held prisoner, and where, on the frigid 15 January 1941, that masterpiece ‘beyond time’ that is the Quatuor pour la fin du Temps saw the light of day.

Well thought out, it is hardly new that a new Guillermo McGill album endorses the level of exquisiteness that the veteran drummer has been crediting for decades from the front row of the Spanish scene. Eight years have passed since that It’s Time to Walk (2016), which he recorded in the company of such illustrious names in our jazz ecosystem as Javier Colina, Marco Mezquida, Juan Diego Mateos and Perico Sambeat, the Uruguayan-born artist returns to the quintet format but with a radically different alignment, which allows him to expand the radius of action of his always eclectic beat. And this time with the tenor sax of Julián Argüelles and the electric guitar of Álvaro del Valle acting as styluses and revolutionizing the basic trio that Guillermo forms together with the piano of the Sevillian Chiqui Cienfuegos and the Israeli double bassist Gal Maestro, sister of the illustrious pianist Shai Maestro.There are many carats that are concentrated in this free space that McGill favors, a man who as soon pays express tribute to the trumpeter Kenny Wheeler (Planktone) as he favors the encounter with the blues in the case of Planktone, where he also distills a few drops of house brand bulería. Although La danza de un ángel is, as its title suggests, a volatile enough album that flamenco is less present than on other occasions, with the exception of that blue Seguiriya that serves to finish the menu.

David ROSE was an american violinist from Susquehanna. ROSE had recorded albums between 1977 and 1983 which make up his solo career, often backed by some of his colleagues from the French TRANSIT EXPRESS (with whom he also founded a pop jazz band BLUE ROSE in the 80’s, namely Serge PERATHONER and Christian Basile LEROUX). Besides fusion music, ROSE was also a member of an American prog folk band named FRED in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

His first album ‘Distance Between Dreams’ (engineered by Laurent THIBAULT of MAGMA) is the most famous one, but the rest also exhibit fusion that can be compared to that of Jean-Luc PONTY, as ROSE also combined electronic sound with his acoustic and electric violins.

The dialogue between this duo of performers is of a high level of complicity demonstrated on stage in recent years. Lately, the duo has worked on works of great relevance from the canonical repertoire for violin and piano, including sonatas by Brahms, Schubert, Bartók and Franck. They have done so without ever forgetting the music and musicians of their time, with whom they maintain a permanent and nourishing relationship that they understand as key to their artistic development. In addition, both musicians have shared an artistic project since 2016 with the Catalan cellist Pau Codina, the Fortuny Trio.
