The voice sheds its pathos and vibrato and becomes a popular gesture: natural, microphonic, languid, intimate, bluesy, pop, cinematic…, while the piano becomes guitar in this trio of mezzo voice, strings strummed and plucked.

The word that jumps to mind when hearing Sofía Valdés’s music for the first time is “yearning”. The Panamanian songwriter makes pop music as a means of meditation–a way of navigating the world around her. Last year’s debut EP Ventura explores the turbulence of her emotions, unfolding with heartfelt expression, introspection and exploring her connection to her culture. As time passed, this vulnerability has quickly earned her a devoted audience, with Ventura accumulating over 18 million Spotify streams and widespread support. Sofía’s upcoming EP is a natural progression, doubling down on this intimacy. It reckons with the loss of a relationship, threaded together by stories of angst, healing and self-realization. Dabbling in familiar folk and bossa nova influence, Latin music, and the swirling neons of alt-pop, the set is a colorful canvas for Sofía’s emotions. “I don’t think that anyone likes to live in a box,” Sofía explains from LA, where she’s currently based. The urge to live outside of the box goes back to Sofía’s childhood, spent in Panama up until she was 15. From a young age, Sofía knew that she wanted to create music. Her Dad would have The Beatles in rotation, and they soon became one of her biggest influences. Later on she discovered Motown, Bossa Nova and Cuban music, all of which resonated deeply. Surrounded by an eclectic and vibrant mix of sounds, Sofia unsurprisingly felt music’s pull from a young age, beginning to learn guitar at eight years old, and a few years later had written her first song (“It was about a ghost in my house; his name was Kevin”). Moving alone at 15 to study in Michigan, university in Liverpool at 18, and now residing in LA, Sofia’s sound draws on her changing environments and the nature of adapting to each. But, ultimately, it’s Panama which she is most drawn to. “I want girls from Panama to look at me and be like oh, I can do this type of music. It’s giving space for other people to do whatever they want,” she says. “I hope I can also inspire other people from where I’m from to see that it is possible to make a living from it. That it’s not easy but it can become possible.”

This will be the three-time Grammy winner’s sixteenth solo album. The album hears Henry joined by more than twenty musicians, among them his long-time musical companions and friends, his son Levon Henry on saxophone and clarinet, David Piltch on bass, Patrick Warren on piano and keys, and John Smith on acoustic guitar.Blood from Stars is the album Joe Henry’s been getting at since Scar. He’s worked with jazz musicians often, but he’s never made a record that employs the form so prominently. His band includes Marc Ribot, Patrick Warren, Jay Bellerose, David Pilch, and now his son Levon on saxophones and clarinet, as well as vibist Keefus Ciancia. Engineer Ryan Freeland is as important as the players: he managed to give this record its strange yet welcoming sound. It begins with the short “Prelude,” played by Jason Moran. It introduces all the characters here, with a note or two here, a chord flourish there. Some are immediately identifiable; others you’ve never met before and perhaps hope never to. Henry’s love of traditional jazz has blossomed — the album sprawls over history, genre, and song forms, but there is no consciously retro aspect in its presentation and it is not a jazz album. Many of these songs are based on the blues (and even folk-blues); some are standards-style pop; some walk out the jazz of New Orleans, St. Louis, and Kansas City from the early 20th century; some even rock — a little. Many are dressed in horn arrangements and offbeat sounds that seem to enter in from the rafters. They drift in and out and are allowed to play a part in the songs. Who cannot relate to the swinging blues (à la “St. James Infirmary”) led by piano, upright bass, acoustic guitar, and a minimal trap kit? The music seems to come from antiquity in “The Man I Keep Hid,” but Henry’s voice is right firmly in the historical present: his protagonist voices his desires and how they are thwarted — usually by himself — as horns, organs, piano, and rhythm section swell and offer the chaos just under the surface of the singer’s voice.
“Channel” follows it, a love song about disorder that is played as anything but. Henry’s character asks simple questions that offer significant difficulties in his inner world, but he embraces them: “I want my story straight/But all the others bend/From wondrous to strange/To beauty at the end….” It’s a haunting melody that would be — if we had them anymore — a parlor song. Both songs reflect something lost and hidden in the wires and satellites of modern life: that individuals — no matter how lost, determined, angry, displaced, hopeful, or praying for redemption at any cost — still have human voices that speak, at least on the inside, constantly. Musical traditions bend and blend into and through one another and are painted by the sounds Freeland allowed to enter from the ghosts in the walls, the ceilings, or up from the floorboards. “Death to the Storm” reveals this better than just about any track here, a simple blues with Ribot’s electric guitar weaving through Henry’s lines and phrases about characters — including the protagonist, who could have come from Steinbeck, Dos Passos, or O’Connor. “Bellwether” — another early 20th century jazz-blues — is a modern tale of Sisyphus. He’s climbing a hill, digging a well, changing his name, leaving his shame, etc., until the story gets better. Ultimately, Blood from Stars is the most sophisticated, redemptive, and romantic album Henry’s cut; the love songs are simply raggedly breathtaking. It reflects an America that wasn’t so much lost as consciously wiped away near the end of the 20th century. Its remnants still live, however, in the shadows of memory, and in the broken-hearted ghosts that continue to haunt its landscape and atmosphere, and sometimes even its people. Henry welcomes them, lending his voice to theirs in of all these songs. – Thom Jurek

When Snorre Kirk first heard the clarinetist and saxophonist Giacomo Smith in London, there was no doubt for him. He knew right away that he had met a man who was on the same musical wavelength.

Then, on Giacomo’s recommendation, pianist Joe Webb joined the band, and suddenly the stage was set for a turnaround in Snorre Kirk’s work and his celebrated career as a drummer, composer and bandleader.

“They are funny and serious people and incredibly contagious in their energy. I immediately had the feeling that we all come from the same musical world, “ says Snorre Kirk. “We share the same wide range of heroes and the love for early jazz in its many forms. Of course, we all have our own little universes, but with us they immediately and naturally fell into a common orbit. We have a lot in common.“

The focus is often on whether something is ‘old’ or ‘new’, but I don’t see any logic in that. The more music I listen to, regardless of the style, the clearer it becomes to me that it always comes from something else,“ says Kirk.

The result is a continuation of their experimental, ambient, and instrumental output, which balances contradictory sounds to create a hypnotising and compelling record. Hatakeyama, a prolific multi-instrumentalist who has released over 70 albums in his career, sets the tone of the record with haunting soundscapes that wash over the listener. Yet, Ishiwaka’s phenomenal drumming, often fast-paced and frenetic, makes for a stark yet strangely fitting contrast.In life, we battle contradictory emotions and experiences which come with the way our capitalistic society is set up. We often find ourselves struggling with the hustle and bustle of working, socialising, looking after ourselves, facing atrocities on the news, and dealing with other issues that make up the human experience. Secretly Canadian have dug into the late Jason Molina‘s vault and unearthed a never-before-heard Songs: Ohia live album, Live: Vanquishers, which was recorded in the Netherlands in 2000 and is being released on March 4 exclusively to members of Secretly Society and members of the new Jason Molina fan community Static & Distance (pre-order). The only song being released to the public is “VU Anxiety,” a song Jason performed a handful of times between 1998 and 2000 but never released. If you’ve never heard the song, it’s right up there with Songs: Ohia’s best-known classics.

Based on the Charles Dickens story, Our Mutual Friend, the new musical, London Tide, premiered earlier this year in London, and while reviews and in-depth plot details are fairly scarce at this point, the release of the soundtrack on October 17 might illuminate some details.

The play subverts the setup of the Dickens novel by focusing solely on the plot’s two primary female characters, Bella Wilfer and Lizzie Hexam, and greatly reducing the roles of the male characters in order to bring light to narratives that, in modern times, might be worth a deeper examination. While the musical’s director and book writer might both be men––Ian Rickson and Ben Powers respectively––the songs are predominantly helmed by PJ Harvey, an English singer-songwriter known for her seductively coarse indie rock music.

Any examination of The Black Sorrows comes down to one person, Joe Camilleri frontman and the brains behind the band.
