Derek Sherinian is unquestionably one of the most significant keyboard players of the modern era. His far ranging talents have been much in evidence through the music of Alice Cooper, Dream Theater, Black Country Communion and current band Sons Of Apollo. Sherinian has also released a series of acclaimed solo albums over the last two decades.
The latest of these is ‘The Phoenix’, his first since 2011’s ‘Oceana’. For this album, he once again works alongside collaborator and mentor Simon Phillips, who is a crucial part of the process. Also appearing on the album are Joe Bonamassa, Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Kiko Loureiro, Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal, Billy Sheehan, Tony Franklin, Jimmy Johnson.
Sherinian is very proud of what ‘The Phoenix’ represents, especially in its joyous sense of diversity. “’The Phoenix’ once again represents my ability to not only be a musical chameleon, but my ability to blend my signature style with the top guitarists in the world, of many genres.
“True to their vision, Derek and Simon achieved what is seemingly impossible for an album with so many guests: a unified sound and a clear direction. Perhaps inadvertently, they created THE guitar album of 2020, even though keyboards and drums are the main driving force throughout the compositions. Any touring plan nowadays is a distant utopia, but I wonder if this is the album which would warrant a run of shows where Derek finally unveils the vast material he has previously put out as a solo artist on a live setting. One can dream…” (sonicperspectives.com)

Italian progressive metal masters DGM will release their long awaited 10th studio album, “Tragic Separation” this October. It follows the band’s acclaimed release of “The Passage” in 2016.
DGM started writing new music in the spring of 2019 with the overall process taking almost one entire year since it was the band’s desire to push themselves beyond any previous boundaries set by their previous works. Truly, no small feat given the band’s catalog. The end result is “Tragic Separation” an album where the band ticks all the boxes of the Progressive Metal genre, but adds more and more of their own personal identity and approach.
You can still find all the trademark elements of DGM’s sound with sweeping choruses, technical passages, lightning fast fretwork, big vocals, and bombastic transitions, but the care and the dedication to the songwriting emerges in phenomenal songs which carefully encompass everything that goes from Symphony X to a more classic hard rock sound, even giving a nod to the Kansas sound in the title track. The playing is faultless as usual and the melodies are perfectly woven into the killer guitars, epic keyboards, and pounding drums.
Not only are the songs presented her simply great music, but “Tragic Separation” is a concept album about life and everyone’s path they go down between the choices they make and the subsequent consequences they bring to human lives. Among the doubts and second thoughts about the choices made, there is one that echoes in the protagonist’s soul: what if the answer for everything was the path itself? An unanswered question which is another starting point for a new quest… another beginning.

Soprano Diana Damrau assumes the crowns of three different Tudor queens, the central characters in operas by Donizetti: Anne Boleyn (Anna Bolena), Mary, Queen of Scots (Maria Stuarda), and Elizabeth I (Roberto Devereux). With Antonio Pappano and the Orchestra and Chorus of Rome’s Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, she performs the substantial and climactic final scene of each work. When Damrau sang Maria Stuarda at the Zurich Opera, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote: “She commands a voice that seems to have no limits. Her coloratura is stunning, her vocal range impressive, and her dynamic shadings are breath-taking. Damrau is in a class of her own.”

Diana DeMuth debut’s her new album Misadventure. Restless and ready to pave her own way, Diana DeMuth has burst onto the singer- songwriter scene with an arresting perspective about life, love and self-discovery. Growing up on the coast of Massachusetts, DeMuth was immersed in a bohemian upbringing where she moved from place to place with hippie parents. That same restless spirit inhabited DeMuth. After seeing The Avett Brothers from the front row when she was 13, she was enamored with their raw performance and hunger on stage. In that moment, she knew she wanted to be an artist one day. So at 19, after going to college for one week, DeMuth left because she was certain music was her path. For the past five years, she’s focused on just that, spending her time traveling and playing small gigs around America, while waitressing and honing her craft.

Diana Krall has announced that her new album This Dream Of You will be released by Verve Records on September 25. The revered jazz vocal stylist previews it today with the first single “How Deep Is The Ocean.” This reimagining of the timeless Irving Berlin song is available to stream and download and with pre-orders of the album.
On the 13th of March 2017, Tommy LiPuma died at the age of 80. The Grammy-adorned producer had, one year prior, began work on a new album for his protege Diana Krall. The Canadian singer was therefore left to mix the record entirely alone… The calibre of musician on this record is impressive: guitarists Russell Malone and Anthony Wilson, bassists John Clayton and Christian McBride, drummer Karriem Riggins and Bob Dylan’s bassist, Tony Garnier, all come along to finish off the recording of This Dream of You. A great fan of Dylan, Krall used a song name from his 2009 album Together Through Life as the title of this 15th album released by Verve. Whether in duet, trio or quartet, Madame Costello plays and sings in diverse contexts but ultimately returns to her preferred repertoire: the Great American Songbook. The standards that have come to be expected a thousand times over are met as if by magic. Autumn in New York by Vernon Duke, How Deep is the Ocean by Irving Berlin and the unmistakeable Singing in the Rain by Gene Kelley as well as other classics from giants like Sinatra and Nat King Cole become her own. A whisper, a murmur, a refined arrangement, an instrumental treasure, Diana Krall prevails time after time. One could fault her for not daring to reimagine the songs more, but when the standard of these renditions is so high and of such depth, we can do nothing but yield and wonder. Also note that for the first time Diana Krall’s face doesn’t appear on the album cover! – Marc Zisman

“Among the many new vocal stars on the jazz scene today, Diana Panton has special charms. No other vocalist recaptures the atmosphere of the quality analog LP days, as well as Diana. Her coquettish voice and quick vibrato is reminiscent of the great girl singers ranging from Rosemary Clooney to Blossom Dearie. Also, her selection of songs is amazing. Surprisingly, the bonus track is a cover of a Ron Sexsmith song – this too is fantastic!”

Trumpeter Diego Urcola has proven to be a player of incredible range and dexterity throughout his career, a large part of it playing alongside Paquito D’Rivera in the legendary saxophonist/clarinetist’s various eclectic projects. On Urcola’s new recording, El Duelo, the trumpeter recruits D’Rivera to join him in a very rare, and exposed, playing scenario, the piano-less quartet. // Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Urcola has been a part of the New York City jazz scene since the 1990s. His work with D’Rivera, Guillermo Klein y Los Guachos, Enrico Pieranunzi, and as a leader has been celebrated by many, even garnering him a Grammy nomination for his album, Soundances. // It was during a regular visit to Uruguay’s Punta Del Este Jazz Festival that Urcola was asked to present a musical tribute to the revered Gerry Mulligan Quartet that featured Chet Baker. During the quartet’s performance, Urcola invited D’Rivera to the stage, and the idea of recording in a piano-less quartet was cemented by the resounding performance.
A collaboration between trumpeter Diego Urcola and the acclaimed clarinetist/saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, 2020’s El Duelo finds the longtime bandmates combining their cross-pollinated musical backgrounds in a pianoless quartet. Technically, the album showcases Urcola’s group with bassist Hamish Smith and drummer Eric Doob, but the trumpeter has been a member of the Cuban-born D’Rivera’s ensemble since the early ’90s, and El Duelo feels like a celebration of that creative partnership. Born in Argentina, Urcola came to wider recognition in his twenties while studying at Berklee School of Music in Boston and Queens College in New York. He picked up Grammy nominations for two of his early solo albums (2003’s Soundscapes and 2006’s Viva), both of which displayed his knack for mixing progressive modern jazz with Latin and Argentine traditions. El Duelo continues in this vein as Urcola and D’Rivera bring all of their varied influences together, dipping into introspective modal jazz, dusky tango grooves, and propulsive Latin rhythms. Interestingly, while the choice to work without a chordal instrument like a piano or guitar here evokes a spare, classical chamber group aesthetic, it also opens up the sound of the quartet, allowing more harmonic freedom for the soloists. It’s a sound that has taken precedence across the jazz spectrum, and Urcola’s group touch upon much it, drawing inspiration from the straight-ahead style of the classic Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan group of the ’50s on the breezy “I Know, Don’t Know How,” and leaping toward the spritely, free jazz harmolodics of the Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry groups of the ’60s on “Una Muy Bonita.” Primarily, the album falls right in between these paradigms as Urcola and D’Rivera push the boundaries of their global sound as on the declamatory Afro-Latin groover “The Natural” and the middle eastern-influenced “Pekin.” Elsewhere, Urcola’s harmon-muted sensuality is nicely contrasted by D’Rivera’s bright alto sax asides on moody, flamenco-tinged “Libertango.” We also get several inventively arranged standards, including a tango-inspired reworking of Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” (titled “La Yumba/Caravan”), a supple, flugelhorn-accented reading of Dizzy Gillespie’s “Con Alma,” and a wry, ballroom dance-friendly take on Benny Golson’s “Stablemates.” Throughout El Duelo, Urcola and D’Rivera display their improvisational bravura, taking extended solos and sparring with a warm intensity. – Matt Collar

Earth Crisis is the fourth in a series of five EPs Dirty Projectors are releasing this year, each one with a different band member handling lead vocals. (The fifth and final installment will see them taking turns.) Whereas the previous three releases zeroed in on folk, soul, and bossa nova respectively, this one leans into Longstreth’s experimental composer side, presenting a chopped-up version of chamber-pop. Keyboardist Kristin Slipp is the lead vocalist here, singing lyrics she wrote with Longstreth.

This September, Dirty Projectors will release Super João, the third in a sequence of five EPs to come in 2020. Each EP will feature a different band member on lead vocals — Maia, Felicia, Kristin & Dave — with everyone trading verses on the fifth and final installment.
Using a nylon-string acoustic guitar as his guiding instrument, Super João shows bandleader Dave Longstreth pairing longform melodies with surprising chord progressions to create a mood reminiscent of Arthur Russell, Chet Baker, and – of course – João Gilberto, the Brazilian bossa nova pioneer who died last year. “Super João is a feeling,” Longstreth says – one of understated intimacy that serves as 5EPs’s quietly confident core.

It is the music of this master that inspires noble feelings. Original in everything, his only laws are those of his genius. The sublime quality of his works means that all men consider him able to feel the truth. He has been able to rid music of its superficiality in order to serve its nature. He is known throughout Europe, yet cherished by few, just as few people are happy enough to distinguish the noise from feeling and expression. Such was the opinion, in 1752, of a thoughtful observer of Tartini.
His assertion is readily transposable to our period, when the name of Giuseppe Tartini resonates with familiarity in the ears of music-lovers, whereas his music remains mysteriously little-known and underestimated. The fault probably lies with the inevitable Devil’s Trill, its celebrity, as deserved as it is overworked, obscuring a tremendous output of more than 130 sonatas.
In rendering homage to the master of Padua on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his death, the choice proved to be delicate given the abundance of music of constant and exceptional quality. David Plantier and Annabelle Luis have selected the 5 unpublished sonatas in this programme from Manuscript 9796, preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and taken from the Italian city in 1796 by Napoleon’s army as a prize of war.
Four of these date from the latter years of Tartini. They all have in common an extreme virtuosity necessary for performance, yet also the necessity of a perfect mastery of the instrument for producing a natural, musical version, the reflection of the composer’s typical cantabile. David Plantier is without question the baroque violinist most suited for this mission, having been a passionate defender of Tartini and his music for years.
Giuseppe Tartini often performed in duets with his cellist friend the abbé Vandini. The destiny of these two formidable musicians was indivisible, and it is this historic duet that the Duo Tartini aims to bring back to life; the violin and the cello give this richly diverse music a setting of velvet tones, they revitalise the beauty and modernity within so as to touch the hearts of contemporary listeners.

The album is an eclectic and euphoric mix of the past and present, a celebration of musical worlds coming together, with 90’s house blending seamlessly with 2020’s finest pop and remixers, a splash of 80’s soul and a few noughties musical gems added to the blend
When her sophomore album, Future Nostalgia, was greeted with overwhelming acclaim at the start of 2020, English pop diva Dua Lipa decided to gift fans with a bonus remix LP, Club Future Nostalgia. With American electronic artist the Blessed Madonna at the helm, the disco-kissed pop perfection of the original receives a sweaty, thumping update in the form of an extended DJ mix. Seamlessly throbbing from track to track, the set revisits each of the impeccably produced songs from Future Nostalgia, sometimes improving them (“Boys Will Be Boys”) and other times not quite hitting the highs that the crew targeted, like on the Madonna and Missy Elliot update of “Levitating.” The Blessed Madonna goes deep on “Hallucinate” with Mr. Fingers and Paul Woolford and on “Pretty Please” with Midland and Masters at Work, which offer the most interesting takes on the album. Unreleased session cuts “Love Is Religion” and “That Kind of Woman” make their official debuts here, both highlights in their own right. The former, a joyous romp that soars during the choir-backed chorus, could have been a single, while the latter gets Stuart Price’s Jacques Lu Cont treatment as a pulsing gem that’s woven with Stevie Nicks’ “Stand Back.” Additional surprises pop up elsewhere in the mix, bringing samples by Jamiroquai (“Canned Heat”) and Neneh Cherry (“Buffalo Stance”) to the party alongside guest vocalists Gwen Stefani and Blackpink and producers Yaeji and Mark Ronson. Like the original, this is a nonstop party. However, without the boundaries of an official studio release, Club Future Nostalgia transforms Dua’s party for one into a full-on collaborative celebration. While first-timers to this era would be best served listening to the parent album first, existing fans who can’t get enough of that LP will find Club Future Nostalgia to be an absolute blast. – Neil Z. Viola player Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad is the latest talent to emerge from a new, golden generation of Scandinavian musicians. He made his debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Eivind Aadland in 2013, and has since been travelling all around the world, performing in prestigious festivals and concert venues; he is a national favourite.
In 2016 he was chosen to join the world’s most prestigious training programme for experienced classical musicians: the BBC’s New Generation Artists Scheme. This has led to performances with BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Orchestra of Wales, BBC Northern Ireland, as well as performances with London Sinfonietta.
Christian Sinding is one of the few Norwegian composers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who gained recognition with their music outside their native country. Unlike Edvard Grieg, Norwegian folk-elements are not prominent in his richly contrapuntal post-Wagnerian orchestral style. Coupled here with William Walton’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, this is a welcome addition to the catalogue and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra’s recordings.

Elisabeth Leonskaja feels life, people and music intuitively. Long standing friendships and continuous work on certain repertoire, like the Schubert Piano Sonatas, define the essence of her being. She doesn’t give up and looks for answers only in herself. Just like life, music is a pilgrimage. There is a spiritual goal and one should keep an open heart and listen to one’s own intuition, in order to advance, stay inwardly healthy and grow on this path. For her 70th birthday, eaSonus releases Leonskaja’s Schubert of today. Her Schubert breaths and conveys five decades of presence on stage, during which she always felt a great responsibility to her public. The big book format of this release (280mm/280mm) contains 4 Audio CDs with the last eight piano sonatas (D 784 till D 960), a Bonus DVD with a Mozart/Grieg two pianos program, in Memoriam and together at the piano with Sviatoslav Richter and a book with texts and 65 personal photographs about her life, her path in music and her thoughts about music, about Schubert as well as about Richter, her role model and friend.
It is with great happiness that we accompany Elisabeth Leonskaja’s pilgrimage and hope very much that this birthday present will make many even happier.
