Cat Stevens was only 22, but already impressively bearded and professing worldly wisdom, when he released 1970’s ‘Tea for The Tillerman’, a cosy collection of pop-leaning folk songs. The record made the shy singer-songwriter a global phenomenon. With swooning lead single ‘Wild World’ – a tribute to the Londoner’s girlfriend, actor Patti D’Arbanville – he invented the softer side of dad-rock, and topped it all off with a cutesy cover illustration of the titular tillerman sipping on a nice cup of Earl Grey.

50 years later and Stevens – known as Yusuf Islam since converting to Islam in the late 1970s – has decided to commemorate its release not by packaging it up in a tasty boxset, but by re-recording the whole damn thing. The tillerman of the artwork too has jetted 50 years forward, now sporting a spacesuit instead of his classic Captain Birdseye jumper, and drinking his tea under ominous moonlight rather than next to a blazing sun.

Not just a charming – and no doubt quite fun – thing for Stevens to busy himself with, it’s also a powerful way to track the passing of time. On the original album, opener ‘Where Do The Children Play?’ was a perky acoustic musing on nascent environmental awareness, written when people were beginning to open their eyes to the problems of pollution. Now, after half a century of destruction, deforestation and the looming spectre of global warming, a string section backs the gravelly voiced Yusuf. Sage lines such as “Well you roll on roads over fresh green grass / For your lorry loads pumping petrol gas” seem even more prescient. Swooping orchestration aside, it’s a fairly faithful rendering of the original song.

As the debut recording of an ensemble rooted in deep and abiding friendships The Daily Biological is a creatively roiling conversation. The unusual trio of drums (Chad Taylor), saxophone (Brian Settles) and piano (Neil Podgurski) creates tough and engaging music that unfurls in kinetic conversational bursts.

Taylor is probably best known as co-founder of the Chicago Underground Duo with trumpeter Rob Mazurek (and the numerous Underground iterations. A professional on the Chicago scene from the age of 16, he’s worked with many of the most celebrated artists in improvised music including Fred Anderson, Pharoah Sanders, Nicole Mitchell, Matana Roberts, Ken Vandermark, Darius Jones, James Brandon Lewis, Jaimie Branch, Derek Bailey, Marc Ribot, and Peter Brötzmann, and has also led numerous acclaimed ensembles of his own.

The absence of a bass means all three players sometimes step into the low-end role. A musical problem to be solved “we all approached it differently,” Taylor says. “All of our tunes explore different ways to utilize a trio without a bass. You need to be really strong in your playing.”

As soon as I heard the first guitar notes of Bury Me Beneath The Willows I was hooked. I had never heard of Charles Hedgepath, but when this album finished playing, I immediately undertook a little research. There’s much to discover about this skilled guitarist and singer from Greenville, South Carolina. He is a member of various groups such as the Bad Popes, the Shady Recruits, the Work, Simple Syrup and plays a variety of solo and combo performances, mainly around his home state. He is also an in-demand session player and pick-up musician who has played gigs and recordings with such diverse acts as Bluegrass Underground, Peter Rowan, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Marcus King, Matt Reynolds, Randall Bramblett, Bobby Lee Rodgers and many more. He has recorded several of his own albums including a Christmas set and a collection of Spirituals.

MEMENTOS is a kind of keepsake remembrance of songs that obviously mean a lot to Charles. Several of these are hundreds of years old but sound like they were written yesterday due to the vibrant musical arrangements. Like much of the finest traditional music, this set borders on the ecstatic and spiritual, but also knows when it’s time to show a romantic side to counter-balance some of the darker moments. Deep River Blues, a song often credited to Doc Watson, actually goes back much further in time. This version is a warm and embracing number meant to be heard around the campfire with some fine picking and harmonies that everyone can join in with. Dark Hollow has the familiar bluegrass theme of roaming and rambling. Driven by Andy Carlson’s sorrowful fiddle, Charles Wood’s softly plucked banjo and Charles’s own fluid acoustic guitar this is one of those songs that immediately works its way into your head and feet simultaneously. Hurricane is a song that I’m not familiar with. It starts off slowly then builds with good driving banjo from Karl Lauber and a pushing, pulsing rhythm held down by Sam Kruer’s bass that makes it a toe-tapper, for sure. As the song develops things really let loose, with fiery acoustic slide guitar by Marcus King, blistering fiddle from Nicky Sanders and some extremely hot banjo. This leads more into jazz territory rather than old-time country but is still mighty good.

Pianist Cheng Zhang first received international recogni­tion in 2011 by winning both the only Haskil prize and public prize at the prestigious Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Vevey Switzerland.

A native of China, he garnered critical acclaim for his per­formances at such venues including Konzerthaus in Berlin, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Stravinski Auditorium in Montreux and Philharmonic in Warsaw. Highlights in recent years include appearances at Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Verbier Festival Academy, Festival Septembre Musical de Montreux-Vevey, Schubertiade from Espace 2, Bonn Robert Schumannfest and Nohant Chopin Festival.

Since 2016, after winning the Schumann Piano Competi­tion in Zwickau Germany, Cheng has established himself as a distinguished Schumann interpreter of his generation in the recent concert seasons. His all-Schumann album, recorded live at Église Saint-Marcellin de Névache in France, was released in June 2019 by Accentus music.

Cheng studied with Klaus Hellwig at the Universität der Künste Berlin in Germany, where he now lives. He also holds a degree from TCU School of Music under the guid­ance of Tamás Ungár. Before moving to the United States, he attended the Shenzhen Arts School in China, where he was a pupil of Dan Zhaoyi.

Classically trained in contemporary percussion in her native Taiwan, Chien Chien Lu, the emergent vibraphonist best known, to date, for recording and touring with the Jeremy Pelt Quintet, is excited to release “The Path”, her genre melding debut as a leader.

Accompanying Chien Chien are an elite cast of musicians, a group sourced principally from Pelt’s ensemble—with the blessing of the maestro, of course. Such a strong blessing, in fact, that Pelt himself appears here on his young protégé’s debut, alongside bandmates Richie Goods on acoustic and electric bass, Allan Mednard on drums, and Ismell Wignall on congas/percussion.

Goods, in addition to producing the album and arranging its two most recognizable standards, introduced Chien Chien to guitarist Quintin Zoto and pianist Shedrick Mitchell, both of whom prove indispensable here. Though this is not the first time Chien Chien and Mitchell have played together—both played on Goods’ most recent release, My Left Hand Man, a tribute to Goods’ mentor, the late pianist Mulgrew Miller. And so here we have yet another example of jazz’s circle of life: musicians paying mentorship forward.

Rounding out the band are violinist Yoojin Park and cellist Phoebe Tsai, two female instrumentalists who, like Chien Chien, live in New York City and are on the ascent—something in which Chien Chien takes great pride. “As a female musician, I feel really excited when I see other females shining on the scene,” she said.

And shine they do, both often and early. On the album’s opener, a take on Roy Ayers’ oft-sampled neo-soul classic “We Live in Brooklyn Baby,” they combine to form a rich and unyielding foundational layer.

Arranging an Ayers tune falls right in Chien Chien’s wheelhouse. While a grad student at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts, she joined Philly-favorites Vertical Current in an Ayers tribute show. Few combined jazz, funk and soul quite like Ayers, and if The Path is an indication, Ayers’ universalist approach to genre is something Chien Chien aspires to.

“I Am Panda” is the latest release from the inventive, unclassifiable Chiminyo, whose highly original approach to drumming and production was laid bare on last year’s We’ll Never Know. His music packs a punch, overflowing with drifting melodies and psychedelic warmth, forming a missile of electronic layers and live drum intricacies that work both as daytime radio-friendly companions as well as nighttime dancefloor bangers. Chiminyo is the flagship project of Tim Doyle, the London (UK) based drummer and percussionist who also plays with Maisha, Cykada, Gary Bartz, Theon Cross and many others.

The long-awaited debut album by percussionist and producer Chiminyo is finally here. ‘I Am Panda’ weaves together a warm, enveloping tapestry of euphoric melodies, acoustic beats, and brain-burrowing bass lines, all originating from the hit of a drum. Via laboriously self-coded software, every cymbal crash and drum hit triggers a synth or sample, allowing Chiminyo complete control and creating a distinct sonic world like no other. Each track is different in tone and texture, with varying featured artists including K.O.G., Brother Portrait of Steam Down fame, and Eastern-European folk singer Dunja Botic.

The new album follows on from Chiminyo’s 2019 debut EP “I Am Chiminyo”, which served as a visceral introduction to his unique sound, and earned plaudits from the likes of Gilles Peterson, BBC 1Xtra, CLASH, Red Bull, Jazzwise, Jazz FM and more. As well as his own solo project, Chiminyo also performs and records with some of the leading figures of London’s music scene, including spiritual jazz-leaning outfit Maisha and psychedelic energy bomb Cykada. He has also previously collaborated and recorded with Gary Bartz, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, and Zara McFarlane.

Christian McBride solidifies his role as the champion of the past, present and future of jazz with his GRAMMY® Award-winning Big Band’s new album in tribute to Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery and Oliver Nelson. Featuring special guests Joey DeFrancesco and Mark Whitfield, “For Jimmy, Wes and Oliver” honors the historical legacy of the jazz legends who shaped the soul of music for generations to come.

Christian McBride’s latest big band session travels back to an incredible moment in 1966 when organist Jimmy Smith, guitarist Wes Montgomery and arranger Oliver Nelson gathered at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio for a hard-swinging and ever-so-slightly unconventional big band summit meeting; all were operating at peak creativity. It was the first-ever collaboration between Smith and Montgomery, and the resulting albums (The Dynamic Duo and The Further Adventures Of…) were bursting with feats of highwire soloistic daredevilry. Nelson was the stealth MVP of the date. His arrangements—particularly “Down By The Riverside” and “Milestones”—discovered a lane equidistant between the hard swing of Basie and the floral voicings of Ellington, with intricate full-ensemble taunts giving way to plush pads designed to provoke the soloists.

McBride’s update uses those and other original Nelson charts, which, after all these decades, exude a freshness that eludes many large-ensemble projects. And it relies on a similarly sparky showdown between strong minded soloists—the organist Joey DeFrancesco and guitarist Mark Whitfield. Both clearly know they’re working in the towering shadows of giants; neither seems daunted by that as they explore the hairpin turns of the big-band “Milestones” or the easygoing saunter of Montgomery’s “Road Song.” There are a few astonishing small-group moments, too, that offer a quick gauge on how far these soloists have evolved— check Whitfield on “Road Song,” DeFrancesco’s gentle and dramatic reading of the ballad “I Want To Talk About You” and McBride’s capricious twenty-fingered trip through “Up Jumped Spring”).

One elusive element McBride managed to transfer from the original source: The swing feel. From the opening solo, a twisty-road Whitfield foray on “Night Train,” it’s clear that the soloists thrive in the McBride sweet spot—everything they do, all the flashy blowing, flows directly from the crisp, uncomplicated grooves established by the bassist and his rhythm section. Big band music would be easier to love if it all felt this good. – Tom Moon

10月12日生まれ。スタイルキューブ所属。
2012年、第1回スタイルキューブ声優オーディションに合格。
2013年ゲーム『アイドルマスターミリオンライブ』の七尾百合子役で声優デビューを果たした後、 2014年『普通の女子校生が【ろこどる】やってみた。』の宇佐美奈々子役でテレビアニメに初主演を果たす。
歌手としてはキャラソンの他、2013年StylipSに加入し、2015年5月からはユニット「Pyxis」を立ち上げるなどの活動を続けてきたが、2016年10月12日のハタチの誕生日に満を持してソロでメジャーデビューを果たした。
