Sonora Slocum was appointed Principal Flute of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 2012 at the age of 22 and has performed with orchestras around the country including guest principal flute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. She has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra on flute and piccolo. Her collaborations as guest principal include touring and audio recordings with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra as well as visual recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra of New York at Lincoln Center. Slocum has worked under such renowned conductors as Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Sir Simon Rattle, Edo de Waart, Otto-Werner Mueller, John Williams, and David Zinman, among many others. A recent review stated that Slocum has a HUGE sound…and a wizards bag resplendent with technical prowess and musical freshness. The conception of this debut album, Return, stemmed from Slocums interest in astrology and reflected on this period of her life; her first Saturn Return. The tracks on this album represent both pivotal repertoire for flutists and some of the most technically demanding.

The piano trio material included in this Japanese reissue, along with another session from late 1958 (see The Art of the Trio, aka “The 45 Sessions”), constitutes a body of work which was never released in LP format during Sonny Clark’s tragically short life. Clark was an underrated master of the hard bop genre who had a very subtle, artful touch. On this date, he exhibits the influence of Ahmad Jamal and Red Garland (a lighter sound) and less of the Bud Powell-inspired, hard-driving bebop lines.

This material was intended for jukebox release in 45 format. The arrangements are simple and concise; the tunes are all well-known standards. Sonny’s conception is quite accessible – relaxed tempos and blues-inflected improvisations. His chord voicings and harmonies are exquisite on “I Cover the Waterfront,” “Somebody Loves Me,” “Dancing in the Dark,” and Cole Porter’s “All of You.” The recording in many ways presages the Three Sounds’ approach to a tightly organized, commercially affable piano trio concept. This material is also included in Blue Note’s 1998 domestic Sonny Clark release entitled Standards.

The music here has never been released before on CD: “Sahib Shihab & the Danish Radio Jazz Group” (recorded in 1965) and “Sentiments” (recorded in 1971). Joining saxophonist Sahib Shihab on these two sessions are the best musicians on the Danish scene in the late 60’s, including Bent Jædig on tenor sax, Palle Mikkelborg on trumpet, Torolf Mølgaard on trombone, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass, Alex Riel on drums and the famous American pianist Kenny Drew. The musical style is jazz, sometimes blended with an Eastern, North African or American Indian influence and – on one tune – even rock music. This recording is packed with exciting compositions and wonderful performances; check out Kenny Drew’s moving ballad “Extase”, among many fine examples.

“The album was recorded in 1971, March in Copenhagen and it’s a series of stills from moments that inspired every track. One Very hot day in Tunis, while riding a bus on the way to sfax, two Tunisians began to sing a melody to the accompaniment of a drum. The rhythm played by the drummer was dascinating. Not Having a workable knowledge of The western metric system, he could tell me the time value, so I dubdivided and came up with 14/8, or two time 7/4. A a result, Ma’Nee: wich is Urdu for meaning.

The delopment on a free form of The Call with an Ab-lib Chorus, Jimmy Hopps inspiration for Rue De La Harpe, Kenny Drew written by Extase, a deep and beautiful ballad and The alto humming flute and the bass of Niels Henning made me go inside this Companionship. My greatest wish is that you will have many moments of pleasure listening to this album, as we, the musicians, enjoyed making it.” (Sahib Shihab)

“Like many Americans who opt to live and work in Europe, the recorded legacy of multi-reed player Sahib Shihab tends to be overlooked by fans in his native land. Sentiments pairs recordings he made for two separate albums between 1965 and 1971. On the 1971 session, he’s accompanied by fellow expatriate Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and drummer Jimmy Hopps. Most of the compositions are by the leader, starting with the exotic blend of hard bop and African rhythm, featuring Shihab’s dancing soprano sax and Pedersen’s bass solo. Drew switches to organ and Pedersen makes a relatively rare appearance on electric bass on the funky “Sentiments.” The leader switches to baritone sax for Drew’s exuberant ballad “Extase.” The 1965 sessions feature Shihab as a guest with the Danish Radio Jazz Group, playing six of his originals. “Di-Da” is a catchy hard bop tune in which one note is repeatedly echoed by members of the group, though the pattern disappears as he launches his powerful baritone sax. The moody “Tenth Lament” and the perky “Harvey’s Tune” are also highlights, with Shihab switching to flute for the latter piece. The supporting cast has a number of top European musicians, including Niels Pedersen, pianist Bent Axen, trumpeters Palle Mikkelborg and Allan Botschinsky, and drummer Alex Riel.” (Ken Dryden, AMG)

Stumbling into a recording contract right out of college not only came with big management and an even bigger booking agency it also came with what felt like big responsibility. At 20 years old, I was recording, touring, interacting with press and new fans. And, while everything in my career seemed to be moving in the right direction, I now see how this level of visibility at such a young age actually created a certain amount of pressure to “be the happy girl in the dress” that I felt my mentors and managers expected. I had been told that the ultimate goal was to craft a set of fun, light music that left people feeling happier than when they’d come in the door. And my band and I were giving it to them.

But three years ago (15 years in, then as a 34 year old woman), I found myself processing the dissolution of a marriage, the separation of a long term musical partnership, and my mothers almost catastrophic car accident. It was my dear friend and mentor Kurt Elling who spoke these very poignant words, and sent me on an incredibly transformative path:

“I see who you are… And it’s so much bigger, so much deeper, so much more multi-dimensional than your music is right now. Don’t be afraid to walk away from what you think people want from you – and to step into all of the depth, darkness, and radiance of who you really are. That’s what we are thirsty for. The honest, messy, beautiful YOU.”

Country Gospel from this veteran recording artist who grew up in the Ozark Mountains singing in old country churches and now takes you back to the real sound of Gospel that’s recorded in a historic 150 year old Ozark Church.

Of all the albums that Stan Hitchcock has recorded in his 43 years as an entertainer, this is his favorite and one that has a special place in his heart.

It features the traditional, old wooden church sound that he grew up with and that carry so many memories of a young man growing up. On the last few selections of this cd Ronnie Reno plays guitar with Stan and sings tenor harmony. “Softly and Tenderly from the Old Country Church” is a collection of some of Stan’s favorite songs. Parts of the cd were recorded in an 150 year old church in the Ozark Mountains and include some stories of where the songs came from in Stan’s life.

Stan started playing and singing for audiences when he was 12 years old, first at churches in the Ozark Mountains where he was raised, and then on Radio Station KWTO in Springfield, Missouri.

Stan moved to Nashville in 1962 and started recording and touring. He enjoyed many chart records from 1962 to 1982 and developed a strong worldwide audience for his music, stage appearances and television shows.

He starred in his own nationwide television show, “The Stan Hitchcock Show”. from 1964 to 1972 and then went on to head up the team that started Country Music Television (CMT) and ran that network from 1984 to 1991.

Stan is currently the Chairman/CEO of a new cable, satellite and broadband delivered network called “BlueHighways TV” with offices in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

Stan and his family live on a farm in Sumner County, Tennessee and raise Missouri Foxtrotter horses for trailriding.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 54:23 minutes | 798 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Berlin Classics

The chamber combination of trombone and piano is unusual and charming. On “Sapphire”, Peter Steiner and his pianist partner Constanze Hochwartner give an insight into how this combination can work, thereby exploding the myth of commonly-held preconceptions about what the trombone is capable of. It is not just the instrument that shall sound on the Day of Judgment; it can sing tenderly and sweetly, producing a myriad of timbres that sparkle like a sapphire.

With his trombone, the solo instrument that is rarely featured in the field of classical music, Peter Steiner is at home all over the world. After studying at the Mozarteum and the Juilliard School in New York, the young Austrian not only won three solo instrument competitions staged by the International Trombone Association ITA as the first trombonist ever to achieve the feat; he went on tour round the world, from Brazil via the USA to Japan. In 2017 he got to know the young pianist and organist Constanze Hochwartner, with whom he recorded the album Sapphire in Columbus/Georgia, USA.

The programme of the album combines arrangements of works by Mozart and Puccini with melodies by Bernstein and complements contemporary trombone literature with film music from the movie “The Godfather”. Peter Steiner wishes to illustrate how versatile his instrument is, and the sounds he produces are indeed astounding. Soft sounds that range through all the registers alternate with catchy and powerfully mesmerising musical concepts.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Alba

Albums pairing Claude Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor and Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F major have been quite common for decades, and due to this well-established programming practice, dating back to the days of the double-sided LP, the works are widely regarded as a complementary set, beyond the real musical similarities between them. However, for this Alba hybrid SACD release, the Stenhammar Quartet makes the Debussy and Ravel quartets serve as bookends for Germaine Tailleferre’s little-known String Quartet, a work that shares much of their rich chromatic harmonies and twilight moods, but is considerably shorter in duration, more modest in its sonatina-like form, and far less frequently performed. Like Debussy’s and Ravel’s quartets, Tailleferre’s String Quartet was her only work in the genre, and listeners might even feel it’s all of a piece with them, even though it was composed in 1919, 26 years after Debussy wrote his and 16 years after Ravel. Yet by this late date, Tailleferre had generally eschewed impressionism, and as a member of the group Les Six, brought a certain wit and playfulness to her quartet that is notable in the third movement. Including Tailleferre with Debussy and Ravel is a terrific idea that provides a fresh perspective on their music and adds value to the running time of the usual Debussy/Ravel matchup.

It’s during the times when we’re confronted with life’s hardest struggles that we learn to appreciate the humanity around us. On his latest album, Gratitude, saxophonist Steve Cole offers thanks for the people who’ve helped see him through some of his tough times – the loved ones, the musicians and collaborators who rallied around, and the often-nameless professionals whose job is to help and to heal.

Gratitude arrives on the heels of a health scare in Cole’s family. The successful battle left the saxophonist feeling rejuvenated, with a renewed sense of hope and faith in his fellow humans. That depth of feeling shines through on the album’s ten tracks, which joyously spotlight Cole’s gift for infectious grooves, soulful melodies, and vibrant pop hooks.

Steve Kuhn is the all-purpose element: his presence heightens any musical concoction. Like no jazz pianist I know, he is aware of the negative spaces between his notes and shapes those spaces to suit the emotional needs of the tune. And what a set of tunes we have in Non-Fiction, a sorely out-of-print firecracker in dire need of a digital fuse. Speaking of conflagration, nothing singes our brow in any Kuhn project quite like “Firewalk,” which, despite its characteristically spacious feel, is clear and present (I bow to the uncredited engineer on this one). Kuhn accolades aside, it’s the sopranism of reedman Steve Slagle that really sets these coals to glowing and cradles every assured step in the liberation of play. Bob Moses and Harvie Swartz—an ideally suited rhythm section if there ever was one—lock the “Random Thoughts” that follow into lively traction. Slagle opts for flute and alto sax over a constantly shifting sonic palette. Whenever he isn’t breathing, he keeps his hands busy with additional percussion. (Unfortunately, the latter comes across as intrusive to my ears during headphone listening. External speakers will remedy this.) “A Dance With The Wind” and “The Fruit Fly” reverse the scales with a collective dose of whimsy and nostalgia. Swartz is simply fantastic here, weaving deftly through Kuhn’s canvas of vamps with distinct yet harmonious brushstrokes of its own. If anything has been missing so far, we find it all collected in “Alias Dash Grapey,” which has it all: a sweeping piano intro, replete with unrestrained cries from Kuhn, a spirited collage of solos (Moses ever palpable), and a deep sense of communication.

Steve Kuhn Quartet – Last Year’s Waltz – Live At Fat Tuesday’s, New York City 1981 (1982/2019)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 50:06 minutes | 0,99 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © ECM

Last Year’s Waltz has everything a great live jazz album should: a present feel, gobs of atmosphere, and, oh yeah, Sheila Jordan. Right off the bat, interplay from Bob Moses and Harvie Swartz kicks us into wakefulness in “Turn To Gold.” Gilded by Kuhn’s indeed alchemical but always punctual pianism, this dose of smoothness is sure to please. Kuhn brings a montuno flavor to “The Drinking Song,” which is deepened by Jordan’s diaristic musings, both expository and speculative, and boasts enough woops from her band mates to keep our blood at a constant boil. The title track is a languid trickle that quickly crackles into a melodious and cinematic punch bowl. The key to unlocking the set’s inner secrets is “The Fruit Fly,” which, in both title and execution, evokes Chick Corea’s blissful optimism. Downright wondrous pianism and omnipotent drumming make this the instrumental standout (the solo piano “Medley” runs a close second). Kuhn works his magic through “The Feeling Within,” weaving a luxurious carpet for Jordan’s vocal footsteps. Two standards—a decidedly upbeat rendition of “I Remember You” and the virtuosic scat-fest that is “Confirmation”—and the bittersweet yet crowd-pleasing tune “The City Of Dallas” (Steve Swallow) complete this living portrait of a group in its prime. As the recording fades, members of the crowd shout, “More!”

I second that.

Not only does Last Year’s Waltz show us Jordan at her best, but its explosive energy and archival importance make it by far Kuhn’s finest quartet joint of the 80s. A reissue is a must.

Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher is one of the most inventive oratorios ever composed, constantly flitting between styles and colours. It follows the historic French heroine in the hours leading up to her execution. Indeed, the run-up to her death sentence is reconstructed as if in a crime novel. Paul Claudel’s lively libretto contrasts Jeanne with an assorted lot of strange and wonderful characters. More than enough reason for Honegger to open up a colourful paintbox: the work features a succession of choral passages infused with spirituality, cubist-like blocks of sound and even bits of material reminiscent of the music hall. This is grist to conductor Stéphane Denève’s mill, who is a leading authority on French music and a regular guest with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; together with two choirs and a variety of soloists and actors, he realized a compelling and moving Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher.

“A “dramatic oratorio” it might be, but the performance at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw moved it in the direction of opera. This was a consequence particularly of Caecilia Thunnissen’s most effective “mise-en-espace”.” (Anthony Ogus)

Though Mozart was typically grudging, Beethoven had a high regard for Muzio Clementi’s compositions. A leading soloist, Clementi was pivotal to the piano’s development as a virtuoso instrument, but he was also a publisher and innovator. His sonatas combine clarity of form with moments of bravura brilliance, laced with scintillating hand-crossings and his trademark chains of thirds, on which Mozart commented. Infectiously exciting in prestissimo sections, his sonatas offer a compendium of how to exploit new advances in the development of the piano.

”The Edge of Silence” finds American soprano and contemporary music specialist Susan Narucki firmly in her element performing iconoclastic vocal works by Hungarian composer Gyorgy Kurtag.

American soprano and Latin Grammy-nominee Susan Narucki, one of today’s most committed advocates of the music of our time, has a deep and lasting working relationship with Hungarian composer Gyorgy Kurtag which dates back to 1986. Susan’s luminous tone and distinctive artistry and Kurtag’s idiosyncratic fusion of poetry and music come together in this quintessential recorded collection of some of the composer’s most iconoclastic vocal works. In Susan’s words, “I have spent much of my life immersed in this repertoire, and it has become essential to the way I understand music; it is the heart of my practice as a musician.” Equally appreciative, Kurtag acknowledges Susan, “who sang so warmly, purely, so ‘integer’ these songs – with thanks and love.”

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/192 kHz | Time – 42:30 minutes | 1,25 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © 2xHD – Storyville Records

This remastered collection focuses on American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Sidney Bechet. His legendary quintet, the Mezzrow-Bechet Quintet, brings to life some of Bechet’s most influential and acclaimed compositions and arrangements.

This is a historic album of recordings made in the late ‘40s. If ever a man qualified as a jazz master it was Bechet. He ranks perhaps as the second greatest genius in jazz history, after New Orleans’s most celebrated son, Louis Armstrong.

The most striking element of Bechet’s playing is his unremitting continuity of invention. It is as if the music is there inside him, already assembled, and he has only to put the soprano saxophone to his mouth for it all to flow forth in a joyous cascade.

Sidney Bechet was one of the great jazz virtuosi who helped perfect the art of solo improvisations.
