Romain Descharmes, Malmö Symphony Orchestra & Marc Soustrot – Saint-Saëns: Piano Concertos Nos. 4 & 5 (2018)

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Naxos

Saint-Saëns’s mature creative genius shines throughout these last two piano concertos, looking back over a glorious musical ancestry while at the same time opening the door to new worlds. The Fourth Piano Concerto is prescient of both his great Organ Symphony and the concertos of Rachmaninov, revealing Saint-Saëns at his most inspired and innovative. The Fifth was composed in the Egyptian temple town of Luxor, and displays a rich tapestry of exotic cultural influences from Javanese, Spanish and Middle Eastern music, as well as portrayals of chirping Nile crickets and croaking frogs, and the composer’s representation of ‘the joy of a sea crossing’.

With this latest consignment of concertos by Saint-Saëns, the Malmö Orchestra directed by Marc Soustrot and with the pianist Romain Descharmes round off an adventure that began in 2013. The 1875 Fourth Concerto, charming enough on its own account, also appears to prefigure the Organ Symphony which was written ten years later, both in terms of the musical discourse but also the orchestral grip: it’s recognisable from a mile off. Twenty years separate the Fourth from the Fifth, written in 1896 to celebrate fifty years since the composer made his 1846 Parisian début. The work’s nickname – taken from its origin in the town of Luxor which Saint-Saëns visited during one of his frequent stays in Egypt, where he would take refuge from wintry Paris and enjoy the local attractions – is slightly misleading, as the concerto doesn’t really have any particularly Middle Eastern or North African accents, but instead it is more marked by Spanish influences (well, Arabo-Andalusian, strictly speaking). Rather than being “Egyptian”, the work is more of a rich tapestry of diverse cultural influences against a Pyramid-themed backcloth. The second movement offers a few zoological notes, closing to the sounds of croaking toads and chirping Nile crickets.

Another volume in the highly acclaimed complete cycle of Shostakovich symphonies from conductor Vasily Petrenko, leading the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on the Seventh Symphony, written during the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Initially the composer gave each movement a programmatic title but later withdrew them, leaving this epic work as an historic emblem of heroic defiance in the face of conflict and crisis.

“I dedicate my Seventh Symphony to our struggle against fascism, to our coming victory over the enemy, to my native city, Leningrad.”
– Dmitry Shostakovich

“Five Stars … fresh, beautifully phrased and vividly recorded … will stand as a major recorded achievement for the 21st century.”
– BBC Music Magazine

“… one of the great recordings of this still troubling work.”
– Fanfare

“… deserves to be in every orchestral music lover’s collection … with sound as good as performance and value, it’s an easy recommendation.”
– Audiophilia

“… (a) compelling performance … the full-bodied sound from the Liverpool Phil is highly effective and the wide dynamics and vivid climaxes are wonderfully controlled … the sound feels remarkably fresh and the balance is impressive too … the orchestral playing is an absolute triumph … truly world class.”
– MusicWeb International

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra presents some of the world’s most popular comic opera overtures, filled with gorgeous tunes, brilliant orchestration and race-to-the-finish endings. Led by conductor Lance Friedel, the orchestra performs concert repertoire staples such as Hérold’s dramatic Zampa, Wolf-Ferrari’s Il segreto di Susanna and Lortzing’s Zar und Zimmermann.

The flourishing genre of the comic opera had its roots in eighteenth-century Italian opera buffa, whose irrepressible brio was soon taken up outside the country’s borders. In France it produced opéra comique and operetta, and in German-speaking countries Spieloper and Viennese operetta. Some of the world’s most popular comic opera overtures, filled with gorgeous tunes, brilliant orchestration and race-to-the-finish endings, are presented here. They include staples of the concert repertoire such as Hérold’s dramatic Zampa, the textual delicacy of Wolf-Ferrari’s Il segreto di Susanna and the vivid colour of Lortzing’s Zar und Zimmermann.

This album was the direct result of the Odessa Jazz Party in Texas in which vibraharpist Red Norvo participated, joined by saxophonist Kenny Davern, pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Mousey Alexander. Spread over six days, the Odessa Jazz Party brings together twenty or so musicians to play in various contexts. Red brought down the house with assistance by Davern and McKenna, who realized he was tired of making solo records. So, Red invited his friends to the studio in New York in 1975 to record two sessions for this, his second “Famous Door” series album, and here we have evidence of the strongly swinging music heard by the guests at Odessa. Features four previously unissued alternate takes.

“After making only one recording as a leader between 1960-1973, vibraphonist Red Norvo cut three albums for Famous Door during 1975-1977, launching a bit of a comeback. This LP, his second Famous Door release, is an excellent effort. The veteran vibraphonist plays six veteran swing standards plus his own “Santa Monica Blues” with pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Milt Hinton, drummer Mousey Alexander, and (on four of the seven numbers) Kenny Davern on soprano. These small-group swing performances (which some would call “mainstream”) are quite enjoyable.” (Scott Yanow, AMG)

Saxophonist, flutist, and composer Lennart Åberg is among ECM’s sleeper talents. Having graced the label only as sideman to 1994’s Dona Nostra, his brilliance was saved instead for the limited JAPO imprint. On this record he is joined by fellow Swedes Bobo Stenson (piano) and Palle Danielsson (bass), both familiar to ECM listeners. Perhaps not is American drummer Leroy Lowe, who rounds out this incarnation of the quartet known as Rena Rama and played with the group from 1975 to 1983. Born 1944 on a Pittsburg farm, Lowe began playing drums in his high school marching band and later befriended such greats as Billy Hart in his quest for a personal voice. After a two-year period of study at the Berklee School of Music, he joined Otis Redding’s Big Band on tour. The rigorousness of this experience led him to renounce the lifestyle that came with it. In need of recovery, he randomly picked Oslo as a holiday destination and, after some shuffling around, ended up in Sweden, where he sadly died of cancer in 1999…but not before leaving behind a legacy spanning 30+ years. I note Lowe’s background not only because it’s worth telling, but also because it seems indicative of Rena Rama’s aesthetic: it spins a globe and plays whatever its finger lands on.

From the drum solo that opens the Stenson-penned “Enok,” it’s clear that Lowe was a moving force in this outfit. Colorful as an ice cream shop’s selection of toppings, he opens a spacious sound together with Stenson’s entrance, to say nothing of Thomas Stöwsand’s engineering, while Danielsson adds good vibes to the growing message. With this skyward energy behind him, Åberg need only open his wings and let the wind do the talking. That powerful tenor sheds its earthly weight in favor of a boisterous key that with its dancing unlocks gurgling leaps of intuition from Stenson. Danielsson offers two tunes. The composer’s darkly melodic intro in “Rumanian Folk Song” kicks into a light groove with Lowe along for the ride—the bed of the quartet’s energy. Stenson again scales the z-axis, landing only to relay his altitude to Åberg’s soprano. The latter, soft and sure, casts a gray spell. Throughout, the contours of the rhythm section are much like patterned cloth, wispy yet boldly imprinted. Stenson gives us the alphabet of “Circle Dance” before Åberg’s tenor puzzles it out into words and sentences. He is happy to wander far afield, knowing the band’s footprints will always catch up. A veritable tributary of invention. The reedman closes out with two compositions of his own. First is the soprano-infused “På Campagnan II,” which threads galleries of needles in single strokes of intuition. The pianism’s frenzied beauty and hip contributions from the rhythm section are surpassed only by Åberg himself. Those same infections spread in “Royal Song From Dahomey.” This caravan of purposeful melodizing is at once cold and warm and rains percussion on us as if in a desert without oasis.

Tracklist:
1. Enok 12:36

This unique program is a good way to discover Mason Bates’ latest work. The tireless composer took on a request from the Richmond Symphony for the formation’s 60th birthday. The result is Children of Adam, a cycle based upon texts celebrating the Creation, from American poets or sacred writing by Native Americans. The sheet music is structured into 7 parts, and clearly highlights chorals, while adding some filler. Bates, by all accounts, prefers the orchestra to the choir. In other words, an excellent recording of his Anthology Fantastic Zoology by Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO Resound) is proof to that point.

The shining light in this album is the Dona nobis pacem incipit by Vaughan Williams, composed in 1936. The work was rarely recorded and was ordered for the Huddersfield Choral Society’s 100th anniversary. Parallels could be drawn between the former work and the rough, anxiety-inducing Symphony #4, completed two years earlier. The work’s text is based upon an extract from the Agnus Dei of roman catholic mass, passages from the prophetic books in the Old Testament, a John Bright speech given to the House of Commons during the Crimea War, as well as three striking Walt Whitman poems –one of Vaughan Williams’ favorite authors. This new album is an excellent reevaluation of Vaughan Williams’ significance in 20th century music history, as well as his deeply unique sonic world. – Pierre-Yves Lascar

The dichotomy that characterises Louis Couperin’s output for harpsichord is not merely formal in nature. On the one hand, préludes non mesurés; on the other, dance movements: the former are essentially innovative, while the latter continue a typically French tradition.

All the works on this release will come as a surprise to those who know Shostakovich only as a concert composer in the Beethovenian tradition. Dmitry Yablonsky and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra show another side of the composer with the Jazz Suites and especially on Tea for Two. These musical divergences shouldn’t be surprising: while the symphonies, string quartets and concertos represent the core of his achievement, Shostakovich had wide sympathies across the musical spectrum, hence his oft-repeated comment that he enjoyed all music from Bach to Offenbach.

“… contains a suite from the entertaining ballet The Bolt and an amusing arrangement of Tea for Two … all are played with spirit aplenty by Yablonsky and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra …”
– JazzTimes.com

“… another winner … expect colourful winds and penetrating brass … try the Weill-like Foxtrot from the Jazz Suite No. 1 and I dare say you’ll be hooked: those trombone glissandos are nicely done, the Hawaiian guitar slyly insinuating.”
– Gramophone

“Shostakovich did kick up his heels and have some fun occasionally and this delightful disc presents some sparkling examples of that. The Russian State Orchestra obviously delights in this stuff and plays it for all it’s worth … sound is crystal clear and impactful …”
– Audiophile Audition

These three recordings cement the bond between the award-winning composer Richard Danielpour and the conductor Misha Rachlevsky, one of the composer’s most dedicated and perceptive interpreters. It was Rachlevsky who gave the American premiere of Symphony for Strings, a transcription of the Sixth String Quartet – a work saturated in farewells, complete with a hymn and variations. Talking to Aphrodite is the result of a collaboration between Danielpour and the writer Erica Jong, while Kaddish addresses the eternal issues of life, death and eventual peace.

Jazz is a repertory music much like most of the classical canon and similar to classical music’s greats, e.g. Beethoven and Stockhausen, the names of the genre’s pen masters are instantly recognizable. From Ellington and Monk to Silver and Braxton, compositional genius comes in many forms in jazz.

Drummer/composer Paul Motian was brilliant at creating subtle, singable melodies and rhythmically ambiguous, floating forms. Former Motian collaborator and pianist Russ Lossing chose to honor Motian and his work by recording Motian Music, a collection of Motian’s idiosyncratic pieces played by Lossing’s trio.

Lossing is in the perfect situation to reflect on the legacy of composers of all sorts. Having studied classical music, including time under the tutelage of John Cage, Lossing has covered a vast breadth of creative music, from modern classical to jazz to free music. His attraction to the idea of improvisation reflecting and enhancing composition has led the pianist to pursue a lifetime of performing jazz.

It was only natural that Lossing would come into the fold of Paul Motian, a musician with a very similar modus operandi. Motian came through the worlds of contemporary classical, bebop and hard bop before finding his singular musical identity. It is no surprise that the two were close collaborators and friends for twelve years, where Motian was at ease enough to ask Lossing for opinions and suggestions on his compositions.

“I have played all of these pieces with Paul at some point in our twelve years of work and friendship. There is something about his music, his melodic conception and rhythmic invention that just simply makes sense to me and I find his music very easy to play. Really, it plays itself.”

For Motian Music, Lossing brought in his standing trio of bassist Masa Kamaguchi and drummer Billy Mintz. The music of Motian that they chose to re-interpret fits the dynamic of the trio, as the musicians have a honed ability to let the pieces sing for themselves and are also able to expand upon them in a natural way. The recording was done at the Charlestown Road Studio in New Jersey and in real time, as all the pieces were recorded in a single take.

The recording begins with Lossing’s piano introducing a reflective and hazily spiritual “Asia,” with spare accompaniment from bass and drums. “Abacus” showcases the special interplay between Mintz and Kamaguchi in their gnarly, dark underpinning with the piano’s melody skipping alongside with abandon. “Fiasco” is insistent and swinging with Motian’s abrupt rhythmic intension in full display. The delicate “Introduction” is an exercise in patience and resolution, while “Boomerang” is Monk-ish with a barely there center of gravity and disjointed swing.

Mintz sets up “Psalm” with a hesitating grace that marks the brilliance of the elusive melody. Kamaguchi’s pointillistic and reserved bass quietly introduces “Etude,” a piece that’s mystique is in the circular form and eastern modality. The title of “Mumbo Jumbo” fits the intricately built but seemingly random rhythm hits and displays Mintz’s fantastic feel for Motian’s concepts. Lossing’s tremendous rhythmic mastery is hard to miss on “Jack of Clubs” and the haunting “Psalm” closes the recording in an improvised meditation.

Paul Motian’s music is as mysterious as it is inviting. It is of no surprise that so many musicians find the late composer’s music so captivating and ripe for interpretation. Russ Lossing doesn’t take the importance of Motian’s music lightly and hopes to keep the gorgeous mystery alive on his Motian Music.
