For years, they called her Norway’s best-kept secret. She hit the stage each night in a blur of blonde hair, gutsy vocals and stinger riffs, converting the crowd with charisma worthy of the man tattooed on her left shoulder (Jimi Hendrix). Night after night, club after club, always the same question. Who’s that girl…?

Now, at last, the secret is out, as Christina Skjolberg breaks cover and proudly plants her flag with her debut studio album. Released in February 2014 on Ruf Records, Come And Get It is not just a bold album title, but also a direct instruction to any music lover who wants to kick-start their year of listening. “I had a fantastic time writing and recording this album,” says Christina, “and I hope that you’ll have a good time listening to it, too. I’m very proud to be a part of Ruf Records and fortunate to have this fantastic opportunity to spread my music around the world.”

Likewise, in Christina Skjolberg, Ruf has gained an artist with world-beating potential and a one-off backstory. As the bandleader tells us on the track Mrs Funk, “I’ve been playing guitar since I was a little girl/Blues and rock ‘n’ roll has always ruled my world” – and it’s absolutely true. Born on the tiny Norwegian island of Smøla, at the tender age of twelve, Christina was inspired by fellow left-hander Jimi Hendrix to pick up her first electric guitar. From that day on, she was a lifer, committed to a career in music at any cost, hitting blues clubs across her homeland and grinding out her reputation.

While her potential was obvious from early cuts like Feel So Free, it was Christina’s discovery by Thomas Ruf that really lit the fuse. Famous for his nose for new talent, the founder of the iconic German record label quickly secured the Norwegian’s signature, booked her a slot on Ruf’s 2014 Blues Caravan showcase tour (alongside fellow up-and-comers Laurence Jones and Albert Castiglia) and set the wheels in motion for her debut studio album.

And make no mistake: this is Christina’s album. While many record bosses mould their young artists for commercial ends, Thomas trusted his new signing’s musical instincts, setting Christina loose in the Rescue Room Studios in Helsinki, Finland, to chase the album in her head and get it down on the tracks. “I was lucky enough to be completely free to write and record any type of songs I liked,” she says. “That was a dream come true for me.”

And so, with a headful of fresh material, riffs rolling off her fingertips and lyrics spilling onto the page – not to mention the powerhouse backing of bassist Tore Slattsveen, Harri Taittonen on keys and drummer Miri Miettinen – she set to work. “As you will hear,” she says, “my influences are deeply rooted in the ’70s, with a mix of blues, rock and funk. Some will probably say it’s a journey forty years back in time, and I would have to agree, even if my fantastic producer Davide Floreno (Erja Lyytinen) did an excellent job of adding a slight modern twist to the sound.”

With Davide behind the desk to catch the sparks, the eleven classic songs of Come And Get It were born in quick succession. The album bursts to life with the airtight funk of the title track, and from there, the highlights land like knockout punches. Close The Door fuses a shuffle beat with spacey guitar. Bullet rides on a snakey guitar lick before exploding into a smoking solo. I’m Back is foot-down riff-o-rama with a punky curled lip (“You can call me what you want, I know I’m a blueswoman – that’s a fact!”)

An adaptable artist who runs the emotional gamut, Christina isn’t afraid to slow things down and address matters of the heart, as on the aching Moving On, but she’s also a wry social commentator on Runaway’s full-throttle ode to escaping domestic drudgery (“I’m gonna run away… watch out if I’m coming your way!”).

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 27:20 minutes | 272 MB | Genre: Folk
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © LOOSE

Without causing a fuss, Damien Jurado refines his art, album after album. Since the end of the 90s, this artisan of both original and modern folk from the rainy Seattle creates unique music. His songs are just as realist and introspective as they are exuberant, sometimes frightening. More meditative than ever, his 2019 work is one of his most exposed. Alone with an acoustic guitar, which he uses sparingly, Jurado expresses himself in a totally intimate environment; it is a little like his early work. In an ultra-connected world where no one pauses to take a breath, Jurado’s pure and beautiful folk provides us with a much-needed escape. The album detoxifies and evokes an ambiance that echoes clearly the loss of Richard Swift who in 2018 passed away at only 41 years old. The two worked together on many occasions, Swift pushing Jurado to develop the instrumentation in some of his productions. In the Shape of a Storm is not only a work of homage and a hard-hitting Requiem Mass. It is rather proof that one can, again and again, make sparks with one’s voice, a guitar and a few words that are crafted with care. Intense.  – Marc Zisman

Dana Fuchs – Songs From The Road (2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/48 kHz | Time – 01:17:25 minutes | 958 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Ruf Records GmbH

The road has led Dana Fuchs everywhere. But when it came to choosing a location for her version of Ruf Records’ now highly anticipated live double set, Songs From The Road, it had to be New York. The singer and the city have history. Almost two decades have passed since Dana left her home in rural Florida and beat a path to the Big Apple. Stepping onto the mean streets of the Lower East Side at age 19, she was an unknown singer with a voice and a dream, ready to slug it out on the city’s jam-circuit.

Since then, New York has been the backdrop to Dana’s well-documented rise. There were the early buzz-sets in the city’s late-night sweatboxes. The off-Broadway musical Love, Janis, which saw the multi-talented performer become the iconic Janis Joplin. The endless shows and sessions all across town. No wonder, then, that for Songs From The Road, the Highline Ballroom on West 16th Street was the perfect fit – and the singer was received like a local hero. As ever, the Songs From The Road concept isn’t about overdubs, Auto-Tune or opulent production, but the honest bottling of the two-way energy that only occurs when great artists go nose-to-nose with their fans. It’s hard to imagine a performer who deserves the treatment more than Dana: a vocalist who means every note, every night.

A live show by the Dana Fuchs Band is an assault on all the senses. As such, comprised in Songs From The Road’s two-disc pack, you’ll find an audio CD capturing the soul power of that classic set on March 14th, 2014, plus a DVD, directed by Kevin Mackall. Prowling the stage, pouring her heart into the microphone and owning every word of every song on the setlist, you won’t question the wisdom of the UK’s Classic Rock Magazine, who famously declared Dana’s once-in-a-generation voice as “juke-joint dirty and illicit, evoking Janis Joplin, Mick Jagger and a cigarette butt bobbing in a glass of bourbon…”

“Music is a way to express emotions and generate them in the listener; to connect with the human essence and to transformate society. Music is ephemeral, but generates effects that keep in time. I believe in improvisation as a direct mean of musical transmission: I play what I feel and the listener perceives it by adapting it to his personal situation.”-Daniel Ferruz

Daniele di Bonaventura and Giovanni Ceccarelli musically meet for the first time, by creating together this original duo project. The bandoneón and the piano weave a dialogue which enhances the two instruments’ rich expressive palettes: chant, percussion, counterpoint, choral textures, and pure sound. As a result, they blend together and they juxtapose by interacting in delicate balance between written parts and improvisation…

“Inspired by the Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1, [Danny] Elfman’s concerto is dramatic, lyrical, highly rhythmic, percussive (especially given its unusual cadenza-like back and forth between the violin and percussion), thoughtful and playful. The score is high adrenaline business, taking us on a musical roller coaster ride from the heights to the sudden-drop depth of emotions… The physical and emotional energy she [violin soloist Sandy Cameron] put into the work was downright compelling, exciting and extraordinary…The reception given her [Ms. Cameron] — and JoAnn Falletta and orchestra which were exemplary — was wild and crazy and prolonged, of the sort found at sports events. No question about electricity in the air.” (The Virginia Gazette)

Over the past few years Dave Gisler has earned himself an impressive reputation in the free-thinking force field of contemporary jazz as a maverick sound architect on the electric guitar. With Lionel Friedli, the impulsive style-busting force of nature on the drums, and the agile bassist Raffaele Bossard, with his earthy tone, Gisler brought two of the most sought after musicians on the Swiss jazz scene. Since 2016 these three fans of choice yet rough-edged musicianship have been navigating their ship through open musical seas with punky energy, the driving power of indie rock, the free aesthetic of the 1960s and the cadences of modern jazz.

The debut album, Rabbits on the Run, is a stock-take of the moment, a shimmering array of this genre-busting trio’s potential. Without falling into superficial musical eclecticism, the trio celebrate stylistic diversity, orientating themselves on factors independent of style, such as intensity, contrast or energy. Rabbits on the Run; in flight the rabbit leaps sideways. And it is surprising changes of direction and atmospheric turning points which characterise our trip through the all-encompassing sonic cosmos of this promising trio.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 01:06:24 minutes | 688 MB | Genre: Jazz

Picking up where the enrapturing “River of January” left off, Dave Zinno Unisphere’s follow-up, “Stories Told,” further explores the wild and beautiful jungle of jazz, more specifically, the Brazilian/Latin tributary: electric, funky, passionate, and rhythmic. Zinno here is partnered with Unisphere co-founder Mike Tucker, Eric “Benny” Bloom, Tim Ray and drummer/percussionist Rafael Barata. The ensemble is supreme and ambitious, benefiting from having a recording under their collective belt and refinement of the Unisphere mission. The performance is a passionate ode to the band’s multicultural vision.

The recording kicks off with “Neurótico,” by J.T. Meirelles, a samba jazz gem that sets the tone perfectly. Elsewhere, there’s a sweet rendition of Lennon-McCartney’s “Michelle,” arranged by pianist Ray; “Tá,” a rhythmically dynamic fusion of neo-Latin styles; and the powerful “Requiem,” composed by Mike Tucker in his father’s memory, which was heartrending for all of the players. “Stories Told” is, as it should be, a melting pot of pure jazz excitement, performed with verve and executed with inspiration. If you liked “River of January,” a recording with broad appeal and accessibility even considering Unisphere’s gorgeous intricacies, you’ll surely appreciate hearing these Stories.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 56:12 minutes | 629 MB | Genre: Jazz

Pianist/composer/arranger/bandleader David Berkman is a well-known recording artist on the New York scene as a leader, a sideman for many big names (Sonny Stitt, Tom Farrell, Cecil McBee) and as a teacher at Universities and Jazz Camps in the U.S, South America, Asia and Europe. Here, he performs 10 tracks with his regular sextet (plus guests) in a programme of original music having a wide spectrum of influences. The band has worked together for many years and Berkman, like Duke Ellington before, likes to write for his ensemble with individual players in mind.

Blowing Smoke (dedicated to Manhattan’s Smoke Jazz Club) is a relaxed swinger in the ‘contemporary’ style with lively solos from the leader, and Armacost and Stephens on tenors. Cynical Episode has tonal variety provided by Stephens on EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument), Kolker on bass clarinet and Drewes on alto. An urgent, minor theme leads to dramatic, tense solos all round, with background figures and percussion adding to the atmosphere. Blue Poles uses soprano, alto & tenor saxes in a medium-tempo opening leading to solos in double-tempo from five of the sextet in an intense workout. Billy is a jolly tune named after easy-going Dewes. The band easily copes with a complex, chordal, rhythmic structure in a mercurial fashion. Sincerely – a ballad featuring Armacost and Dewes is played in a fluent, mobile manner. Three And A Half Minutes is an attractive, flowing theme where Stephens and Kolker improvise together following the leader’s jagged piano solo.

Kickstopper, a straight-ahead ‘burner’ again in contemporary style, features soprano, alto and tenor saxes over ambiguous ‘Tyner-esque’ chords. Shitamachi (Downtown in Japanese) is for the old section of Tokyo, has some elegant, interweaving lines from tenor, clarinet, and bass clarinet, providing variety before a drum ‘thrash’ from Salters. Restoration is a cleverly arranged song which is slightly ‘gospel-tinged’ with frequent key changes – the leader’s piano shines here… Rain, rain has the clarinets to the fore in a wistful, slightly melancholic framework. Bassist Lightcap has his moments before Berkman brings the CD to its conclusion in a flowing statement.

David Bowie, live from the Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Canada on August 30th 1987 Strung out in heaven s high, the eternal lost astronaut walked out on to the stage at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal and gave an inspired joyride through his then 20-album career. 1987 s Glass Spider tour was his most theatrically ambitious to date and although it had its critics as a spectacle, musically, it was spellbinding. While Low, Lodger and Ziggy fail to emerge, Bowie has plenty more to play with, even after his highly successful Serious Moonlight tour. Here is Bowie, back at his beguiling best in front of 80,000 ecstatic fans.

The Glass Spider Tour was a 1987 worldwide concert tour by David Bowie, launched in support of his album Never Let Me Down. It began in May 1987 and was preceded by a two-week press tour that saw Bowie visit nine countries throughout Europe and North America to drum up public interest in the tour. The Glass Spider Tour was the first Bowie tour to visit Austria, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Wales. Through a sponsorship from Pepsi, the tour was intended to visit Russia and South America as well, but these plans were later cancelled. The tour was, at that point, the longest and most expensive tour Bowie had embarked upon in his career. At the time, the tour’s elaborate set was called “the largest touring set ever”.

Bowie conceived the tour as a theatrical show, and included spoken-word introductions to some songs, vignettes, and employed visuals including projected videos, theatrical lighting and stage props. On stage, Bowie was joined by guitarist Peter Frampton and a troupe of five dancers (choreographed by long-time Bowie collaborator Toni Basil). With the theme “Rock stars vs Reality”, the show was divided into two acts and an encore. The set list was modified over the course of the tour as Bowie dropped some of his newer material in favour of older songs from his repertoire.

The tour was generally poorly received at the time for being overblown and pretentious. Despite the criticism, Bowie in 1991 remarked that this tour laid the groundwork for later successful theatrical tours by other artists, and the set’s design and the show’s integration of music and theatrics has inspired later acts by a variety of artists. Starting in the late 2000s, the tour began to collect accolades for its successes, and in 2010 the tour was named one of the top concert tour designs of all time.
