For the past twenty years, while maintaining an unsurpassed career as a trombone soloist and in tandem with being a sought-after conductor, Christian Lindberg has also been composing. Previous releases of his music have earned him critical praise: the reviewer in American Record Guide ‘was captivated by his interesting ideas and rich harmonic language’ while his counterpart on German website Klassik-Heute characterised Lindberg as ‘a marvellously deft, self-reliant composer’. The present album is the third BIS release dedicated entirely to Lindberg’s music, and features some of his more recent works. In his own liner notes, Lindberg describes his method of working, and explains the background of the three pieces recorded here with the Odense Symphony Orchestra. In regards to Steppenwolf, his viola concerto, he was attracted by the solo instrument’s ‘melancholic and deep qualities … offering an opportunity to compose something that could never be expressed in the same way with, for instance, a violin’. In a classical, three-movement concerto form, the work isn’t programmatic as such, but while composing it, Lindberg was reminded of the novel by Hermann Hesse. The title of the following piece, on the other hand, refers to a previous composition by Lindberg himself. Composed for a television project involving music as well as dance, the fifteen-minute Tales of Galamanta uses material from the ‘arte commedia’ Dawn from Galamanta.

Listening to music is always a journey for the listener but with the Ensemble Cicerone’s new Genuin Classics CD, the composers were already adventurers people who, in the Baroque era, took to the dangerous roads on land and water all over Europe and ensured that musical styles met and mixed. The musicians of the ensemble, which bears in its name the great travel guidebooks Cicerone, teach at the Mozarteum and at the Cologne University of Music: they let the intricate paths of emotions arise before our ears in the wonderful music of Händel, Muffat, Telemann, and others and thus cast a spell on us.

The American pianist Claire Huangci has gained followings in her native country, in Germany, where she was partly trained, and, to judge from the chart performance of this Chopin release there, in the United Kingdom. The Russian pianist Vladimir Krainev has said that she has the fastest fingers in the world, which is nothing to sneeze at. The album proclaims that it’s the first recording of Chopin’s complete nocturnes since Arthur Rubinstein’s, which it may well be, but that’s not necessarily a good thing: the nocturnes were not a cycle of works, and a lot of them are strongly similar to one another. This doesn’t work to Huangci’s advantage: her sunny, rather delicate tone is pretty consistent throughout, and 22 nocturnes is a lot. Huangci seems to recognize this when she overlays the album with a “diary” concept, actually a group of quotations from French poetry, each matched to one of the nocturnes. (The booklet isn’t particularly illuminating on how the choices were made or what their meaning for Huangci might be.) The strengths of the album are exactly as Krainev says: Huangci’s ornaments glitter and glide, and her playing certainly gives an idea of why there has been a fuss over this young player at a time when the American piano scene could use the boost.

Born in Prague in 1737, Josef Mysliveček spent most of his short life in Italy, where for a while he enjoyed success with his many operas, and became known as ‘Il Boemo’ (‘The Bohemian’). It was also in Italy – in Bologna – that he first met Mozart, in 1770. Their paths would cross again and in letters Mozart wrote about him with affection, describing him as full of ‘fire, spirit and life’. Mysliveček’s influence is apparent in Mozart’s early operas, violin concertos, symphonies and keyboard music. His music soon fell out of fashion, however, and it is only recent decades that have seen more interest in works such as the wind octets, violin concertos and symphonies. In comparison, Mysliveček’s output for keyboard has been somewhat neglected, something which the English pianist Clare Hammond seeks to rectify with her latest disc. The keyboard concertos in particular have barely seen the light of day since Mysliveček’s death and the second concerto is recorded for the first time on this disc which gathers all of the extant keyboard works. Clare Hammond, whose imaginative recording projects on BIS have received international acclaim, is here supported in the concertos by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by no one less than Nicholas McGegan, whose expertise in 18th-century style is undisputed.

In its bell-like sonorities, clear textures and ritual manner, the piano music of Robert Saxton (born in London in 1953) suggests an almost oriental fascination with light and the way light refracts and diffracts – and yet it is audibly music written by an Englishman. In the two Books of Saxton’s Hortus Musicae in particular, this fascinating confluence generates a soundworld somewhere downstream from Takemitsu and Tippett, giving these gardens of music both a ceremonial dignity and sense of spring growth. Hailed as a pianist of ‘amazing power and panache’ (The Daily Telegraph), Clare Hammond is recognized for the virtuosity and authority of her performances and has developed a ‘reputation for brilliantly imaginative concert programmes’ (BBC Music Magazine, ‘Rising Star’). In 2016, she won the ‘Young Artist Award’ of the Royal Philharmonic Society in recognition of outstanding achievements. She is a champion of modern repertoire: this is her sixth album of music by a living composer, and she has given 35 world premieres to date. Clare completed a BA at Cambridge University, where she obtained a double first in music, and undertook postgraduate study with Ronan O’Hora at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Claudio Arrau – The Complete RCA Victor and Columbia Album Collection (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 10:01:02 minutes | 5,49 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Sony Classical

These recordings reflect how Arrau s textually scrupulous yet highly personal mastery of many styles had matured and ripened, while retaining the fire and ardency of his youth. Arrau s Mozart, Weber and Chopin probe beyond the music s surface charm, as do the luminous and full-bodied Spanish and French Impressionist selections. Cumulative momentum and thoughtful detail characterize Arrau s Beethoven and Schumann while the extraordinary technical finish of his Liszt transcends mere virtuosity and bravura.

Claudio Arrau (1903 1991) was a singular figure among the great pianists of his time, who strived to fuse the best that nineteenth- and twentieth-century performing traditions had to offer. Arrau s 1941 1952 American recordings for Victor and Columbia represent the pianist on prime form at one of the peaks of his long career. Sony brings this body of work together for the first time in a comprehensive edition, vividly remastered from the original sources.

Born in Chillán, Chile, on February 6, 1903, Arrau gave his first recital at five. Three years later the Chilean government awarded the prodigy a ten-year grant to study in Germany. Martin Krause, one of Liszt s last pupils, nurtured the young pianist, gave him daily lessons, supervised his practice, and took him to concerts, museums, and the opera. At 24 Arrau won the 1927 International Geneva Prize, and embarked on his legendary cyclical programs encompassing the complete sonatas of Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Weber, plus all of Bach s solo keyboard in twelve Berlin concerts. A triumphant 1941 Carnegie Hall recital launched Arrau s American career, and his international profile came into focus with numerous worldwide tours, honors, prizes and recording sessions that continued up until his death on June 9, 1991 in Mürzzuschlag, Austria.

Towards the end of the 19th century, two great cosmopolitan cities developed with identical characteristics in opposite corners of the vast American continent. In these cities, two characteristically urban musical genres were born produced by the melting pot of European immigrants, creoles, African slaves and people native to the land. When jazz (which emerged from European salon music together with ragtime rhythms, blues and spirituals) arrived to New York, it met indigenous melodies, religious chants, Anglo-Celtic ballads and cowboy songs from the old west, all of which would sum up the essence of North American music. On the other hand, in Buenos Aires (which had recently been elected as the capital city of Argentina), a style of danceable song was born in which one can trace influences coming from Andalutian flamenco, south Italian melodies, Cuban habanera, candombe and African percussion, Spanish contradanza and the milonga or the rural music from Argentina. Both styles breathed an air of nostalgia which bore memories of remote places, times of despair and of hope for a better life. Both are considered popular, they belong to simple people from the countryside who created them and witnessed their birth. Both of our authors, Gershwin and Piazzolla, mantained parallel lives with partially self-taught education. When they aspired to match their works to those of what is known as classical music, they both aimed at Paris to complete their education. In both cases they were encouraged to follow their own path, their own style in which their intuition wouldn´t be minimized by formalisms or rules which could have resulted as counterproductive. Both were extroverts, with a magnetic personality, full of vitality, enthusiasm and a fine sense of humour. However, deep inside they were somehow shy, insecure and sometimes even suffered from depression, all of which perfectly explain the contrasts in their happy and festive creations with the melancholic roots of deep solitude and suffering that subtly flourish in their immortal compositions. (José Manuel Baena)

Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Alpha

Franz Liszt was 67 when he composed his Via Crucis, yet it did not receive its first performance until 1929, 43 years after the composer’s death. This work of his mature years is in 15 sections, retracing the Stations of the Cross that mark the stages of Christ’s Passion, from being condemned to death to being laid in the tomb. Combining Gregorian chant, the Lutheran liturgy and the Latin, German and Aramaic languages, the Via Crucis shows real formal originality. A devout believer, Liszt gives us here his most important sacred work. He composed several versions: for mixed choir, soloists and organ (with the organ part optionally transcribed for piano), for piano solo, organ solo, and two pianos. After a first programme devoted to Janáček, the Collegium Vocale founded by Philippe Herreweghe is once again conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw in this Alpha recording.

For more than 20 years, the Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra has been presenting its audience with a cheerful and at the same time reflective program from the rich repertoire of the Strauss dynasty and its contemporaries at the turn of the year. Under its umbrella, a unique platform has emerged that gives young professionals the ever-less-rare opportunity to participate in exceptional concert projects beyond the limits of their studies and professional life.

Born in Cologne, Volker Hartung began learning the violin and viola at the age of nine. He was Principal Violist in the Klassische Philharmonie in Bonn from 1974 to 1980 and in the Rhenish Chamber Orchestra in Cologne. American scholarships enabled Hartung to study viola and conducting at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City with Ivan Galamian, Joseph Gingold, Margaret Pardee and the Juilliard Quartet from 1980 to 1982.
Volker Hartung has been Principal Conductor of the Junge Philharmonie Köln since 1986 and has appeared with the Orchestra at numerous International Music Festivals and concert tours throughout the world.

Except that the playing is nowhere near at the same level as the conducting and the recording is nowhere near at the same level as the playing, this disc of early recordings of the great Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini would be a success. And despite the orchestras’ extremely limited capacities, Giulini’s charismatic personality, intrinsic sense of drama, and sheer strength of will achieve much: his 1954 Schubert B minor Symphony is almost entirely convincing and his 1956 Brahms E minor nearly totally persuasive. But the Milan Radio Symphony’s scratchy strings and breathless winds do compromise the radiant lyricism of Giulini’s Schubert and the Rome Radio Symphony’s braying horns and keening flutes do wound the heroism of Giulini’s Brahms, and not even the conductor’s faith in the music and in his musicians can overcome the orchestras’ “every man for himself” approach to ensemble. And if the Italian radio playing wasn’t enough of an impairment, the live Italian radio sound is painfully antique with brief but agonizing bursts of static to remind the listener of its broadcast origins. When I am elected Pope or President, the powers here are a push, then the samba will be the global dance of love. Anything on the Enja label is a musical ‘gimme’ with the second release from Cristina Braga no exception. As much diversity as one will find in Brazilian music depending on which part of the country you happen to be staying in, it is the same diversity that makes Samba Jazz and Love such an artistic delight.

Braga surrounds her magical voice with trumpet, flugelhorn, vibraphonist and the spot on nuances of drums and percussion that take what could have been considered an ordinary samba influenced record and instead pushed the project perhaps heights that Braga herself never knew were possible. The use of the harp by Braga fits in well with the compositions by some of Brazils most influential composers. This is Brazilian fusion, the use of such a wide variety and virtuosity of both music and voice occasionally the collective sounds as one. Intimate yet powerful. A subtle rhythmic pulse lends itself to a layer of what is referred to as chamber jazz in the west, emotional and organic yet powerful and dynamic. The shifting harmonics without every losing her lyrical path or intensity is a thing of beauty.

A great deal of thought went into the tunes from such composers as Chico Buarque, Roberto Menescal and Tom Jobim are but a few names to be dropped in this stunning outing. All of the vocals are in Portuguese. I speak no foreign languages with the exception of enough Italian to either get my face slapped or successful purchase a drink for a lady at the bar. Language is no barrier, especially here.

Dark Betty Carter like ballads, virtuoso harp playing on Jobim’s Canta Mais and the Afro Brazilian style with the captivating melodu of Preciso Me all contribute to the success of an emotionally touching and deceptively complex recording.

Cuarteto Casals presents Revelations, the second volume in a new complete cycle of the Beethoven quartets. The group devised an innovative structural arrangement for its recordings. The works are not presented in the typical grouping of early, middle and late periods: rather they are arranged according to each quartet’s place within Beethoven’s musical development. This ingenious juxtaposition reveals as never before how Beethoven’s superhuman struggle for perfection gave birth to a musical language of breathtaking originality without precedent in this genre, of which Beethoven is the uncontested master.

After ‘Inventions’, ‘Revelations’ is the second volume in a complete set of the Beethoven quartets that breaks new ground: it aims to regroup the works according to their position within the three broad creative divisions of the composer’s life – the formative years, the ‘heroic’ period and the late period. This programme assembles the ‘median quartets’, in other words the works that prolonged and consolidated the stylistic innovations outlined at the beginning of each of these creative periods. ‘It’ll be fascinating to hear the next instalment’ (Gramophone).

Gentle and haunting spirits from distant spheres meet in a surging world of dreams and lullabies in ‘The Girl and the Angel, a musical narrative’. This work interweaves a new story by bestselling author Cornelia Funke with expressive new compositions by Luna Pearl Woolf and familiar and popular songs by Irving Berlin, Lennon / McCartney, Jake Heggie, Engelbert Humperdinck, Gordon Getty and others. Cornelia Funke herself captures her story with rousing songs by Frederica von Stade, Daniel Taylor, Lisa Delan and Zhen Cao, accompanied by the lush cellos of Matt Haimovitz and his Uccello ensemble. Exquisite images from the award-winning creative studio Mirada visually shine the story. The Girl and the Angel was originally released in 2013 under the title Angel Heart with accompanying concerts in Los Angeles and New York’s Carnegie Hall, first released internationally in 2018, and now appears in a German-language version. The New York Times described The Girl and the Angel as ‘a story that penetrates directly into the imagination of young people, with the simplicity and dark pull of a fairytale.’

2018 also marks 250 years since Gioachino Rossini’s death in 1868. ‘Messa per Rossini’ was composed in his memory by Verdi and 12 other notable Italian composers Verdi himself composed the concluding Libera me, which he later used in his own ‘Messa da Requiem’

This rare recording represents the work’s triumphant return to the spiritual home of Verdi and Rossini: the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

“To honour the memory of Rossini I would like the most distinguished Italian composers to compose a Requiem Mass to be performed on the anniversary of his death.” (Giuseppe Verdi)

Messa per Rossini is a Requiem Mass resulting from the assembly of thirteen parts written by thirteen different composers. Shortly after Rossini’s death in 1868, Verdi addressed Ricordi: “To honour the memory of Rossini I would wish the most distinguished Italian composers to compose a Requiem Mass to be performed on the anniversary of his death. I would like no foreign hand, no hand alien to art, no matter how powerful, to lend his assistance. In that case, I would withdraw at once from the association. If I were in the good graces of the Holy Father, I would beg him to allow, at least this once, women to take part in the performance of this music, but since I am not, it would be best to find a person more suitable than I to achieve this end.” The composition was completed in the summer of 1869, but the hearing was cancelled… due to sinister political disputes. Verdi resumed his own contribution, the Libera me conclusive, in a revised form for his own Requiem; the comparison of the two movements, the original for Rossini and the definitive for Verdi’s Requiem, is a fascinating exploration of the Verdian laboratory and evolution. The other twelve composers have hardly passed the test of posterity, but it is extremely interesting to see what was then being done in the Italian sacred domain. The Mass for Rossini, which had fallen into oblivion, was only rediscovered in the 1970s and (re)created in 1988. Here we find Riccardo Chailly at the helm with the La Scala of Milan orchestra and choir as well as four leading Italian soloists.

Fifteen years since their debut, Cotonete release the long-awaited ‘Super-Vilains’. Brilliantly cinematic jazz-funk with elements of Brazilian brass-heavy compositions.

Originally starting out in the late 90s, Paris-based 8 piece, Cotonete originally gained fame for renditions of tracks from their contemporaries, the likes of Deodato, Lalo Schifrin and Banda Black Rio. Replicating the heavy grooves, sweaty jazz-funk with a nod to the Brazilian warmth and beach breeze. Before bowing out of the game thinking the fun was over…

Fast forward to more recent times, having had their flame reignited by Melik Bencheikh, head honcho of Paris vinyl emporium, Heartbeat Vinyl. He encouraged the band to get back together and over the last two years they released four EPs of original material – including the collaboration with Dimitri from Paris – quickly becoming collector’s items, and now gearing up for 2019 they are finally ready to present a full body of work, their album debut ‘Super-Vilains’.

The acclaimed vocalist Cyrille Aimée explores the Sondheim songbook for her scintillating album, ‘Move On: A Sondheim Adventure’. What began as a celebration of a legendary Broadway songwriter became a work of cathartic autobiography as one song after another captured her deepest personal feelings.

While its narrative arc is a self-contained story, ‘Move On’ is just the beginning of a new chapter in Aimée’s remarkable journey. It’s the French-born singer’s first release since disbanding the acclaimed band she’s led for the last several years, to which she bid a fond adieu on her last album, ‘Cyrille Aimée Live’. It’s also her first since moving from Brooklyn to New Orleans, the latest music-rich city that she’s been able to call home.

That move ended up being accompanied by even more uncertainty than usual for such a major relocation, as a break-up meant that she unexpectedly had to make it alone. The course of that relationship provided the through line for the songs on ‘Move On’, which traces the course of a romance from dreaming together (“Take Me To The World”) through vulnerable commitment (“Marry Me A Little”) to heartbreaking assurances (“No One Is Alone”) and finally the uncertain future (“With So Little To Be Sure Of”).

Aimée’s Sondheim Adventure began in 2013, when she was invited to participate in a tribute concert for the Broadway legend at New York’s City Center, co-starring with Bernadette Peters and backed by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Her show-stealing performance was widely praised, but the most memorable compliment came from the composer himself. “You made me cry,” Sondheim told Aimée backstage after opening night.
