Coltrane does not do the old Dexter Gordon/Leo Parker duet number, “Settin’ the Pace,” in this set. The overall title merely refers to his preeminence in the jazz world at the time the recording was released in the early Sixties. Recorded in 1958, this session comes from a time when Trane had already played in the Miles Davis quintet and the Thelonious Monk quartet, and was frequenting Rudy Van Gelder’s New Jersey studio in recording situations backed by the Red Garland trio. This threesome–Garland, Paul Chambers, and Arthur Taylor–was a Prestige entity on its own, but had already released such albums with Coltrane as Traneing In and Soultrane. Settin’ the Pace, with its heady combination of seldom-done pop material and Jackie McLean’s intriguing “Little Melonae,” continued the excellent quartet series at a time when Trane was making jazz history at the head of yet another powerful foursome. with Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Arthur Taylor

This is John Coltrane from the period when he was a member of Miles Davis’ legendary 1950s quintet, accompanied by fellow quintet members Red Garland and Paul Chambers. This is Coltrane in a relaxed bop mode, making some swinging, relaxed jazz in the vein of Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz (the latter in his more boppish mode). This is not the fire-breathing saxophonist of the mid-’60s, but a player who was beginning to push against the boundaries, all the while playing with thoughtful, imaginative lyricism. It’s a set of little-known pop tunes of the era, with the exception of Jackie McLean’s “Little Melonae.” Anyone who likes the mainstream jazz of the ’50s, or Miles’ music of that time, or Coltrane fans who want to hear their idol in an easygoing context, should pick this up.

John Davidson was a vocalist who could sell a lot of albums without the benefit of hit singles. He put several songs on the adult contemporary chart, but never once graced the pop chart despite making some very successful albums. My Best to You was a commercial disappointment after Davidson’s first album, The Time of My Life!, but again shows that he is a confident and dynamic vocalist, unlike many of the “golden throats” celebrity vocalists with whom he is often lumped. At times he sounds startlingly similar to Pat Boone, but asserts his own identity on songs like “That’s Life” and “Sunny.” Davidson’s music is a perfect example of how traditional and teen idol pop turned into easy listening in the late ’60s without suffering much of a change at all. ~ Greg Adams

2018 release featuring songs recorded live in Germany, 2017 with his trio featuring Greg Rzab & Jay Davenport. Includes recent tunes mixed with old classics.

This new album is John Mayall’s sixty-eighth and that doesn’t include re-issues. Mayall is the influential British bluesman who formed his band The Bluesbreakers in 1963. A great guitarist, keyboardist, harmonica player, singer, songwriter and bandleader he is still going strong after more than fifty years. At the 2016 Blues Music Awards Mayall was inducted into The Blues Hall of Fame.

This album features Mayall in a trio format. Mayall explains “it came about accidentally when my guitarist wasn’t able to make a festival gig due to airline cancellations. Since then, I found that the interplay and dynamics have created a more personal upfront sound”. Performing as a trio for more than a year vocalist Mayall switches between harmonica and keyboards. The rhythm section is still Greg Rzab, bass; and Jay Davenport, drums. The album was recorded live in Germany in March, 2017.

Mayall reprises two of his own songs; “Streamline” and “Lonely Feelings”. Mayall is also a historian and the other seven songs are selected covers “from my extensive library of material composed by some of my favorite blues players.”

“Big Town Playboy” written by Eddie Taylor was the title track to his 1981 album featuring Jimmy Reed on guitar. “I Feel So Bad” is from Sam John “Lightnin’ Hopkins and a 1962 Imperial Records single. “The Sum of Something” written by Curtis Salgado originally appeared on Salgado’s 2004 album “Strong Suspicion”. “Congo Square” is from Sonny Landreth.

“Tears Came Rollin Down” written by the 2008 Grammy award winning Henry J. Townsend was first recorded by Mayall on his 1988 album “Chicago Line”. Lionel Hampton’s “Ridin’ On The L & N” was previously included on Mayall’s 1994 recording “Cross Country Blues”. “Don’t Deny Me” written by Jerry Lynn Williams also appears on Mayall’s last studio album 2016’s “Talk About That”.

What’s next on the horizon for Mayall. He states that on his next “recording I shall still be exploring the talents of guitar players who will be pretty well-known to all lovers of rock and roll”. Mayall may be referring to Joe Walsh of The Eagles who was a guest on “Talk About That”. Now that would be something to talk about.

Sad Clowns & Hillbillies is the 23rd studio album by American singer-songwriter and musician John Mellencamp. It was released on April 28, 2017 by Republic Records.The album features significant contributions from Carlene Carter, who worked with Mellencamp on Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, his musical collaboration with Stephen King, and Ithaca, the movie he scored for ex-girlfriend Meg Ryan. Carter opened every show of Mellencamp’s 2015–2016 Plain Spoken Tour.

Sad Clowns & Hillbillies marks the first time in a decade that a John Mellencamp studio record finds him in the producer’s chair. It’s the first time ever that he’s shared billing on an album cover. Carlene Carter is a singer/songwriter and music biz veteran; the daughter of country music royalty — Carl Smith and June Carter Cash — making her the stepdaughter of Johnny. She and Mellencamp worked together on 2012’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, the musical theater project he scored for Stephen King; they collaborated further on the soundtrack for Ithaca — the “Sugar Hill Mountain” reprised here is one of a handful of excellent duets between them. Things don’t begin well, however. Mellencamp’s attempt at Mickey Newbury’s “Mobile Blue” (from his classic ‘Frisco Mabel Joy album) is utterly dull despite using a full band driven by Miriam Sturm’s excellent fiddling. “Battle of Angels” hearkens back to the songwriter’s Lonesome Jubilee/Big Daddy period, and works like a charm. It’s got everything: A killer hook, a poetic lyric, and a gritty vocal. Martina McBride appears as his duet partner on first single “Grandview,” a rocking paean to trailer parks — — though guest guitarist Izzy Stradlin almost steals the show with a greasy blues-rock shuffle and break. “Indigo Sunset,” the first duet between the headliners — is kicked off by Carter’s soulful country contralto. She frames the lyric’s haunted loneliness while Mellencamp’s grainy rasp — framed by B-3, mandolin, fiddle, and guitars — balances perfectly to bring it home. “All Night Talk Radio” is classic Mellencamp: Its dark vision is painted in compelling, ironic, and dark imagery packaged as in a taut, acoustic rocker. Morally, he should share the royalties for “You Are Blind” with Leonard Cohen’s estate: A careful listen reveals that the strategic manner of stacking images and metaphors to draw out the last syllables bears the unmistakable imprint of the late songwriter’s classic “Suzanne.” Carter’s soaring lead opening the duet of the rocking blues-gospel of “Damascus Road” is another set highlight. That theme also guides “My Soul’s Got Wings,” with Mellencamp’s melody and chart accompanying a Woody Guthrie lyric — Carter’s command of the country church vernacular (after all, she sang with her mom in the Carter Family) lights the fuse for Mellencamp — no stranger himself to rural Sunday services — and he brings it home. While the words in closer “An Easy Target” rank among Mellencamp’s most politically charged and socially arresting, his faux Tom Waits’ delivery blunts the tune’s impact a bit, but it’s too powerful to be completely buried under a stylistic mistake. While Sad Clowns & Hillbillies is a bit of a mixed bag, it’s better than all of his other records that bear that mark (Dance Naked, Whenever We Wanted, Rough Harvest, et. al). It puts all his strengths — excellent original songs, unforced arrangements, and (mostly) inspired performances — on full display. Well, almost. Because Carter’s dynamic presence here, and the pair’s unmistakable chemistry, lift this album above the ordinary. ~ Thom Jurek

The soundtrack to the most anticipated movie of the year, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Benicio Del Toro, Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher, the movie is the official Episode VIII in the universe-conquering film franchise. Once again composed by the legendary John Williams.

When the first Star Wars film came out 40 years ago, film-maker George Lucas showed real nerve when he chose a strongly symphonic colour for the soundtrack, and picked out a composer who knew his classics (and his Wagner in particular). At the time, early electronic music was almost compulsory in science-fiction films. In 2017, the presence of John Williams in the opening credits of a Star Wars film doesn’t have quite the same audacious feeling, and the thrill the audience feels when the prologue starts to roll derives mostly from the legendary status of both the music and its octogenarian writer. It has been asserted that in fact the real “last Jedi” in the film is John Williams! All the same, upon the release of this eighth episode, some voices have been raised (critic Michel Ciment’s in particular) to insist that John Williams has served his time and that he should give way to a younger composer. But rather than getting bogged down in the question of “the age of the captain”, we should look at the important thing: the score for this eighth work is very interesting. In particular, it shows up a fascinating dichotomy between the archetypal nature of the musical themes (very clearly illustrating a character or concept) and Williams’s extremely subtle way of developing them, to say nothing of his indisputable skill with orchestration. Beyond the many epic pieces on this soundtrack, (The Battle of Crait, The Fathiers, etc.), special mention must go to the majestic Ahch-To Island, which sees a “retired” Luke Skywalker who wants to live out the rest of his days in peace and serenity. Moreover, listeners will be pleasantly surprised to find, nestled away within this remarkably written and well-controlled score, Canto Bight, a jazzy theme with a South American flavour (which at points pastiches Brazil), with a steel drum section! This is a piece which proves that John Williams is fully at ease with all musical genres and all orchestral colours.

John Williams & John Powell – Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Ever since the Star Wars franchise began in 1977, its music has been synonymous with legendary film composer John Williams. Now that the 86-year-old composer has announced that next year’s Episode IX will be the last time he’ll be scoring a Star Wars film, we can’t help feeling melancholic.

One of the most important things about any Star Wars movie is the soundtrack. Everyone knows how a Star Wars movie sounds. The opening is classic. There’s the great fanfare as the screen goes black and that big chord breaking into the familiar, triumphant main theme when the crawl starts. There are the leitmotifs of Luke, Leia, and The Imperial March, some of which fans can sing by heart. But the Solo: A Star Wars Story soundtrack is very different. For one thing, they don’t have the opening. Why? Because, like Rogue One before it, Solo is an anthology film, and does not have a crawl.

Solo is also like Rogue One in that composer John Williams did not write the score. He contributed (more on this in a minute) but the overall score was done by musician John Powell, who is best known for his work on How To Train Your Dragon and Shrek. (Yes, Shrek.)

The score for Solo is 20 tracks in all, 19 of which are done by Powell. The good news is none of the titles listed on the album are direct spoilers, so one can peruse the names in peace. Though some do bring to mind questions, such as the track entitled “Lando’s Closet.” Seriously, the man’s wardrobe gets its own theme song.

One of country music’s unequivocal stars, Johnny Cash retained respect for the travails of the audience elevating him to that position. Recorded live at one of America’s most notorious prisons, this album displays an empathy bereft of condescension and captures a performer combining charisma with natural ease. The material is balanced between established favorites and new material including “Wanted Man” (an unrecorded Bob Dylan song), and the lighthearted hit “A Boy Named Sue.” It was not the first time Cash had recorded in a penal institution, but this appearance, at a time when American values were vociferously questioned, suggested the artist’s rebelliousness had not dimmed.

Composed by Jon Lord and the German composer and conductor Eberhard Schoener, ‘Windows’ was recorded live on June 1st, 1974 at the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz with the Orchestra of the Munich Chamber Opera conducted by Eberhard Schoener. The band for this special occasion is star-studded with musicians like Jon Lord’s former bandmates David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes as well as Tony Ashton, Ray Fenwick and Pete York. Windows consists of two parts. “Continuo on B. A. C. H” is based on an unfinished fugue by J. S. Bach, which was based on a scale using the notes represented by his own name. Lord and Schoener interpreted and ‘finished’ it. “Window” is based on the idea of a form of chain poetry called Renga, developed during the 14th century in Far-East, where a group of poets co-writing would lock themselves away, writing each verse in turn and continue until the finished product emerged. The recording was re-mastered by Rob Cass at Abbey Road Studios and the artwork was reinterpreted.

“自動手記人形”であるヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデンの心情を描く、京都アニメーション制作のTVアニメ『ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン』。そのストーリーを彩る歌の数々を一堂に集めたボーカルアルバムが発売された。
アルバムには、OP主題歌のTRUE「Sincerely」、ED主題歌の茅原実里「みちしるべ」に加え、各挿入歌のフルサイズバージョンも収録。その他、TRUEと茅原実里のデュエット曲、TRUE・茅原実里・結城アイラによる新規制作のイメージソング等が収録されている。

總是不斷突破自我的「金曲歌王」蕭敬騰，這次首度挑大樑主演公視電視劇『魂囚西門』，劇中蕭敬騰飾演的心理師用心理學的方式跨越了人鬼的界線，而戲外的作曲家則依據《魂囚西門》高潮迭起的劇情畫面，量身打造了專屬原聲配樂，內含各種複雜難解的心靈音符，隨著大中小提琴還有鋼琴、黑管等眾多樂器的演奏此起彼落，所有的配樂不僅遠赴美國紐約錄音製作，更邀請到了葛萊美獎常勝軍的大師級人物Alan Silverman擔任後期母帶處理，完美融合了這張原聲配樂在戲劇視覺與音樂聽覺上的情緒。

主題曲『Green Door』

『Green Door』不到一分半鐘的時間，從小步快走的鋼琴循序漸進著，隨著管絃樂隊刮起一道道如高牆般壓迫的強風，再到整體情緒堆疊至最高峰時的戛然而止，在還沒看到劇情之前，就讓人完整感受到《魂囚西門》起承轉合中間的強大戲劇張力。

片尾曲『Haunting Me』

《魂囚西門》男主角蕭敬騰這次不但在戲劇演出上做出新的突破，他更為本劇特別演唱片尾曲『Haunting Me』，與平時渾然不同的歌聲，更是蕭敬騰以劇中角色為基底所詮釋的唱腔，時而以陰柔優美的嗓音，像一縷輕煙般包圍著我們，時而用渾厚高亢的嗓音重擊我們的心窩，觸動著每個聽者的身心靈，歌曲唱出劇中人的故事與心情，讓第一次聽到這首歌的聽者都感到驚艷不已。《魂囚西門》是台灣首部心理驚悚劇，這首由蕭敬騰所演唱的『Haunting Me』將會是台灣電視劇史上最扣人心弦的片尾曲之一。

MCA Nashville s promising new artist Jordan Davis announces his debut album Home State will be released March 23. Home State includes the singer/songwriter s infectious single Singles You Up in addition to the previously-released tracks Slow Dance In A Parking Lot and Take It From Me. Known for his unique songwriting talent, Jordan co-wrote every track on Home State and teamed up producer Paul DiGiovanni for the entire 12-song collection.

The Straight Hits! is the brand new album from Josh T. Pearson and is Josh’s second solo album following the critically acclaimed, Rough Trade Album Of The Year, 2011’s The Last Of The Country Gentlemen. Recorded in Texas with members of Lift To Experience and The Texas Gentlemen, the album includes Straight To The Top and You Set Me Straight.

Josh T. Pearson picked up pared-down rock’n’roll just where it had been left by Jeffrey Lee Pierce of the Gun Club and the Nick Cave of the Bad Seeds. Up until now, Pearson has been defined for many by his masterpiece, the double-barrelled, messianic work, The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads that he brought out in 2001 with his trio Lift To Experience. He brought out other pieces as part of the same outfit, and also some solo works (Last Of The Country Gentlemen en 2011), but that was really his moment of glory.

With The Straight Hits! (every track has the word “straight” in it), which he says he recorded in just a few days, Josh T. Pearson is returning to rock’n’roll with a Bible in his left hand and a guitar in his right. Like a man possessed, the Texan vomits out blues, rockabilly, psychedelia, country and plenty of other gobbets of whatever he has been digesting. What’s more, he loves to quote scripture (surely quite without realising…), like on Give It To Me Straight where he apes the Jagger of Rocks Off or on Straight At Me where he takes off 96 Tears by ? And The Mysterians. But it’s not all sound and fury, and Pearson throws in a good brace of depressive, beautiful ballads (Straight Down Again, Whiskey Straight Love and A Love Song (Set Me Straight)) which lend even more credibility to this finely-played and written rock’n’roll project without sugaring the pill or rounding off the hard edges. –  Marc Zisman
