On Aftertones, Janis Ian (guitar/piano/vocals) continued the artistic, and to a lesser extent, the commercial success she garnered on her previous effort Between The Lines (1975). Once again, she assembled some of the finest session musicians from the Big Apple to animate her intimately sensitive sonic portraits and caricatures. Although Ian would not surpass the universality of “At Seventeen,” much of this disc continues the theme and moods expressed as far back as Stars (1974). Ian’s advanced folk sensibilities are emotional progressions away from the weepy and introspective nature heard from her mid-’70s singer/songwriter contemporaries. Part of Ian’s enticement is the marriage between achingly beautiful melodies and thoroughly personalized lyrics. The album commences with the title track setting the tenor and sonic ambiance. The acoustic guitar and compact string section lend to “Aftertones” slightly baroque feel, which adds to the song’s palpable isolation (“‘Til all that’s left to see are aftertones/I take them home/ We live alone”). The beautifully bitter “Love Is Blind,” and the harrowing “Don’t Cry, Old Man” are piercing in their honesty. They contrast the lighter fare of “I Would Like to Dance,” as well as the tongue-in-cheek “Boy, I Really Tied One On,” or the overtly kinky blues “This Must Be Wrong.” “Goodbye to Morning” is a dark jazzy ode that stands out as one of the best sides on the album, featuring some distinct interaction between Richard Davis (acoustic bass) and Ian’s own rambling, unplugged fretwork. Folk and gospel legends Odetta (vocals) and Phoebe Snow (vocals) join in on Aftertones magnum opus, “Hymn.” The trio soulfully swaddle their subtle harmonies into a unified lead as they languidly allow their own vocal aftertones resonate with unencumbered majesty.

This is Janis Ian’s second album from her re-emergence in the early to mid-’70s as one of the genre’s most inspired and original singer/songwriters. While this title houses Ian’s biggest international hit, the confessional “At Seventeen,” the entire effort combines her honest and confessional lyrics with an equally engaging blend of pop/rock and definite jazz and blues. She assembled much of the same ensemble that had worked on her previous long-player, Stars (1975), and much of the material retains the same warmth and intimacy in both her craft as well as the presentation. Unlike the more somber and introverted tracks that dominate Between the Lines (1975), the disc commences with a prime example of Ian’s infectious coziness on the light and airy “When the Party’s Over.” This is one of the title’s more straightforward love songs and features an appropriately lilting counter-harmony from Dennis Pereca. More typical are the somewhat dark and oblique “From Me to You,” “The Come On,” and the despairing title track. Darker still are “In the Winter” and the abject loneliness of “Tea and Sympathy” both of which feature some engaging arrangements courtesy of famed arranger/conductor Ron Frangipane, whose clients include Melanie and Townes Van Zandt as well as both John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Underlying the heady orchestration and truly at the center of Ian’s skill are her emotively powerful yet reserved melodies. This was undoubtedly a factor in “At Seventeen” becoming a Grammy winner as well as a chart-topping single stateside and a Top 20 hit throughout much of Europe as well as more disparate locations such as Israel. The strength of material and public interest garnered by Between the Lines would continue on her next equally powerful long-player, Aftertones (1976). This album is a recommended starting point for potential enthusiasts, as well as a touchstone to be repeatedly revisited.

Singer/songwriter Janis Ian followed up her understated masterwork Aftertones (1976) with this long-player, which includes some equally engaging and varied material. Although she’d eventually return to using studio heavies for the remainder of her ’70s and early-’80s output, Miracle Row (1977) prominently features Ian’s touring band, which highlights the respective talents of Claire Bay (vocals), and a power trio of Jeff Layton (bass/horns/horn arrangements), Stu Woods (bass), and Barry Lazarowitz (drums/percussion). Each of the musicians were themselves recording session stalwarts and had interacted with the artist in various capacities for several years. Never one to shy away from controversial or blatant social observations, “Party Lights” is one of Ian’s more personal exposés, dealing with the drug-fuelled Jekyll and Hyde decadence of the mid-to-late ’70s. The melody is penetrating with a sense of foreboding drama, which is evident musically as well as lyrically. “Miracle Row”/ “Maria” adopts a lilting tropical air behind some of Ian’s most affective contributions on the album and deal, although somewhat obliquely, with her own sexuality. These introspective themes are carried into the stark and harrowing “Sunset Of Your Life” which confronts the fear and uncertainty of aging with a refreshingly honest poignancy. These decidedly serious themes are contrasted by the up-tempo, funky “Let Me Be Lonely,” and the jazz fusion-riddled “Take To The Sky.” As the easy-going “I Want To Make You Love Me” featuring some nice harmonies from Bay as well as the intimacy of “Candlelight” reveal, Ian had not lost her knack for lovely, simple, and otherwise unencumbered tunes. In fact, it is her blend of affective words and catchy melodies that sent the Spanish-flavored “Will You Dance” to the top of the singles chart in Japan where it remained for the better part of three months, eventually sending the album into the realm of six-figure sales and platinum status. Ian admits that the drugged insanity of the music biz and many of its’ concurrent denizens were ultimately behind the split-up of the tight combo featured on “Miracle Row.” Her self-titled follow-up would continue the jazzy leanings hinted at here, and she would return to the heavyweight talents of Ron Carter (bass), Richard Davis (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums).

When Janis lan’s self-titled 1978 album failed to crack the Top 100, it was clear that changes were in order. Here, she turns to producer Ron Frangipane and a surprising songwriting partner, Euro-disco maven Giorgio Moroder, who brings in his dance tracks for “Fly Too High,” which was intended for the motion picture Foxes. More appropriately, Ian also pairs with Albert Hammond for the leadoff track, “The Other Side of the Sun.” Even on her own, however, she is attempting a more timely pop style: “Memories” is as much of a disco cut as the Moroder one. That makes the album more engaging on the surface than her recent releases, but less compelling. As a commercial move, Night Rains failed to chart in the US, but was an international best seller.

After a three-year (1971-1974) hiatus, singer/songwriter Janis Ian (guitar/vocals) reinvented her craft on the groundbreaking Stars (1974) long-player. Her penchant for hauntingly beautiful melodies and incisive lyrics remains at the center of Ian’s craft as she weaves an array of uniquely expressive observations with timeless poignancy. She has publicly acknowledged that the introspective title track that opens the album was inspired by Don McLean’s “Vincent.” Ian’s reflections are almost naked in their intimacy as she looks within the psyche of celebrity and draws comparisons between the respective astral and physical bodies that “Stars” inhabit, albeit briefly in either case. The song’s sparse acoustic guitar self-accompaniment is somewhat an anomaly as the remainder of the album incorporates various backing combos. The cosy and laid-back “Page Nine” demonstrates a jazzier side to Ian’s arrangements and features some inviting contributions from percussion legend and studio heavyweight George Devens (vibraphone), who had been performing in Ian’s studio coterie since her second release, For All the Seasons of Your Mind (1967). “The Man You Are in Me” is instrumentally highlighted by Richard Davis (bass), who impels the rhythm and provides Ian with a sonic backdrop beguiling the listener into its practically hypnotic melody. There is also a fair share of folk-infused material, ranging from the easygoing and heartfelt peon “Thankyous” to the decidedly more political and strident “Dance with Me” which deals fairly directly with the Vietnam experience. Perhaps the best-known cut on Stars also obliquely references the war and is considered the disc’s crown jewel. “Jessie” is a riveting love song that is as beautiful as it is soul-wrenchingly poignant. The delicate understated score only adds to the composition’s empathy. “Applause” fittingly concludes the effort in a Broadway-esque fashion with a grandiose production reminiscent of something out of Cabaret or A Chorus Line. The understated and comparatively reticent middle section is dramatically bookended with an otherwise embellished and knowingly campy arrangement. Stars set the stage for Ian to further develop her mature and meditative themes utilizing a wide variety of musical styles a hallmark that separated her from her weepy and otherwise introspective peers.

Two-time, reigning and current ACM “Entertainer of the Year” nominee Jason Aldean returns with his eighth studio album, Rearview Town. Joining forces with longtime producer Michael Knox, the risks and their rewards electrify the 15 new tracks snaking between stadium-sized guitar anthems, heartfelt country minimalism and hip-hop swagger. “It’s about putting things behind you…things that have held you down…and looking ahead,” said Aldean of the album’s title track. “When you look at my career and the personal experiences I’ve gone through, it really seemed like a fitting title for this record and it’s one of the best songs I’ve ever recorded. It was important to me to pick songs that have substance to them, I’m more conscious of that these days.” Long a maestro of up-tempo stompers, Aldean kicks off Rearview Town with “Dirt to Dust” and “Set It Off,” an epic one-two punch of dirty guitars and undeniable hooks with razor-sharp production. Heading for traditional country on the standout lost love lament “Drowns the Whiskey” featuring Miranda Lambert, the track is remarkably understated in its arrangement, but it’s saturated in well-worn emotions. On “Better At Being Who I Am,” Aldean lends a nuanced, knowing delivery to the breakup tale. Occasionally like on lead single, “You Make It Easy,” he even finds himself channeling the blues. But for all its sonic diversity, Rearview Town is indelibly cohesive. It’s Aldean’s lifelong love of country country music and country life that ties it all together.

It’s no coincidence Jasper Somsen’s 3rd (and later this year 4th) Challenge Records album features an international piano trio line up. Recent years performing and/or recording in trio with a.o. Enrico Pieranunzi, Joey Calderazzo, John Beasley, Jeff Ballard, Justin Faulkner and Andre Ceccarelli, he is much sought-after by pianists. The former New York, now Montreal-based French master pianist and composer Jean-Michel Pilc and one of Jasper’s all-time favorite French drummers Andre Ceccarelli joined him for this diptych. At their first encounter ever, this trio with Jean-Michel Pilc and Andre Ceccarelli recorded A New Episode in Life Part I & A New Episode in Life Part II in just two days. The album contains nine melodically strong instrumental compositions by double bass player, Jasper Somsen. Transparency is the key word in musical expression and form throughout the entire album, similar to songs without words.

A New Episode In Life Pt. II was recorded by Jasper Somsen (double bass), Andre Ceccarelli (drums) and Jean-Michel Pilc (piano) the day after they recorded Part I, which was completed in one day rather than two. This album contains free-form improvisation and some jazz standards and is a true accomplishment by three very experienced and talented musicians. ‘Since my repertoire was already recorded on day one, we decided to record free-form improvisations, as well as some standards from the Great American Songbook. Back at the studio, at eleven o’clock in the morning, we asked recording engineer Floren van Stichel just to let the recording run until we would say when. The complete Solar Suite and Blue Monk were recorded in one entire twenty-three minute take… Spontaneously, we dove into the next improvisation or standard and went back and forth to the recording booth listening, after a few takes. We just started to play, not mentioning any titles or preconceived ideas Within six hours, including lunch, we recorded the entire second album.

JB Dunckel is best known for his work with Nicolas Godin as Air, they of the landmark 1998 double platinum debut album Moon Safari. The gentle downtempo synthpop album referencing the stars and naive heroines was a clear change of course from the crunchy electro of fellow French band Daft Punk, and the album was a success. Dedicated fans of Air may be satisfied with J B Dunckel’s new album H+ with its low tempo pop music and songs with titles like ‘Space Age’ and ‘In Between the Two Moons’ and the heavily accented whispery vocals. It’s a well-crafted pop album, but with some clear shortcomings.

Not a single new track in five years, an album on the side by Nicolas Gaudin in 2015 (Contrepoint, with Because Records) and now this H+, which formalizes the comeback of a solo Jean-Benoît Dunckel, after revealing his dark side on Darkel in 2006. Even if the lucrative international tours are still happening (they have visited Australia, the United States and Singapore during the summer of 2017, and completed a 5-star show at the Philharmonie de Paris), this disc should confirm the rumors of tensions between the two members of Air. Dunckel incidentally cultivates the ambiguity in his presentation, by declaring: “I built on the sound experience of Air, and this is the solo continuation of my sound on Air, without renouncing the past. This is a rope that I pull, and I live with that.” If Gaudin found inspiration through Glenn Gould’s work on Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Dunckel presents himself here as an architect of the Air brand and its trademark sound, that is still acclaimed by the public twenty years after Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides’ soundtrack.

Sound copyrights intersperse this album that starts with Hold On, the single released in December, with Guillemette Foucard’s ethereal voice, already heard on Music for Museum. Dunckel’s voice asserts itself more and more throughout this opus punctuated with contemplative pieces (Love Machine), analog melodies like on Transhumanity, filtered vocals (Space Age, some kind of Kraftwerk from the future), both electro and pop (The Garden, looking toward the Beatles). In the end, this H+ reminds us that Dunckel’s compositions have been appealing to the public for so many years because they do good for the body and calm the mind. It is in a sense a therapeutic disc to listen to after an hour spent on public transport or, even better, to take along with you on your commute.

“Musically, BARTHOLOMEW plays like a hazy, off-kilter combination of Sampha, Surf, and D’Angelo. It’s been two years since his last release, Love Apparatus. In the time since, Jesse Boykins III has been immersing himself in music, and it has paid off in a big way.”- Graham Corrigan, Pigeons and Planes. Jesse Boykin III has been making waves in underground circles since his 2008 debut album The Beauty Created and has since enjoyed a number of star-studded features, from appearing on The Foreign Exchange’s Make Me A Fool to Vic Mensa’s Magic. Bartholomew marks Boykin’s fourth studio effort, marking a new height for this warm-voiced, soulful songwriter. With guest appearances from the likes of Little Simz, Kilo Kish, Willow Smith, DeJ Loaf, Noname, Isaiah Rashad, Donnie Trumpet and more, this release is a sensual, sweaty, sonic party.

Jethro Tull’s tenth album was inspired by Ian Anderson’s departure to a more rural environment in a transition which bore clear influence on the writing and recording process, with the band notably doffing a cap to British folklore and countryside. Songs From The Wood is often referred to as one of the most commercially appealing Jethro Tull albums, containing elements of rock, prog and folk-rock. Although media reaction at the time divided opinion, the album has certainly developed a nostalgic rapport with fans through the years and it is perceived today as one of the band’s most popular albums. Drummer Barrie Barlow comments that it sounds “Fresh, unique, great textures, interesting and dynamic!”, while guitarist Martin Barre remembers that “It was a very tight band, one of the strongest line-ups Tull ever had… I think that Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses [the follow up album] as a pair of albums are near the top of the tree”.

The first album of the set contains the Steven Wilson remix of the original studio album, accompanied by associated recordings. This includes the tracks “Old Aces Die Hard” and “Working John, Working Joe” which are being released here for the first time on any format. “Old Aces Die Hard”, a title Ian Anderson recently gave the track in a subtle nod to Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, is, according to Ian “an extraordinary find, because it’s a long piece, and quite evolved, and one that sounds like it is pretty much complete – it doesn’t sound as if it was waiting for me or anyone else in the band to go back and redo vocals or guitars or whatever.”

It was a very tight band, one of the strongest line-ups Tull ever had… I think that Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses as a pair of albums are near the top of the tree

Far and away the prettiest record Jethro Tull released at least since Thick as a Brick and a special treat for anyone with a fondness for the group’s more folk-oriented material. Ian Anderson had moved to the countryside sometime earlier, and it showed in his choice of source material. The band’s aggressive rock interplay and Anderson’s fascination with early British folk melodies produce a particularly appealing collection of songs – the seriousness with which the group took this effort can be discerned by the album’s unofficial “full” title on the original LP: “Jethro Tull With Kitchen Prose, Gutter Rhymes, and Divers Songs from the Wood.” The group’s sound was never more carefully balanced between acoustic folk and hard rock the result is an album that sounds a great deal like the work of Tull’s Chrysalis Records labelmates Steeleye Span (though Nigel Pegrum never attacked his cymbals or his entire drum kit with Barriemore Barlow’s ferocity). The harmonizing on “Songs From the Wood” fulfills the promise shown in some of the singing on Thick as a Brick, and the delicacy of much of the rest, including “Ring Out, Solstice Bells” (where the group plays full out, but with wonderful elegance), “Hunting Girl,” and “Velvet Green,” set a new standard for the group’s sound. “Pibroch (Cap in Hand),” which is dominated by Martin Barre’s electric guitar in a stunning array of overlapping flourishes at full volume is the only concession to the group’s usual hard rock rave-ups, and even it has some lovely singing to counterbalance the bulk of the song.

Jethro Tull s second album, Stand Up, marked an early turning point for the band with the addition of guitarist Martin Barre along with Ian Anderson s introduction of folk-rock influences to the group s blues-based sound. Released in the summer of 1969, Stand Up rose quickly to the top of the U.K. Albums Chart, and eventually earned gold certification in the U.S.

The group’s second album, with Anderson (vocals, flute, acoustic guitars, keyboards, balalaika), Martin Barre (electric guitar, flute), Clive Bunker (drums), and Glen Cornick (bass), solidified the group’s sound. There is still an element of blues, but except for “A New Day Yesterday,” it is far more muted than on their first album, as Mick Abrahams’ blues stylings are largely absent from Martin Barre’s playing. The influence of folk music also began to manifest itself (“Look Into the Sun”). The instrumental “Bouree,” which could’ve been an early Blood, Sweat & Tears track, became a favorite concert number, although at this point Anderson’s flute playing on-stage needed a lot of work; by his own admission, he just wasn’t that good. Bassist Cornick would last through only one more album, but he gets his best moments here, on “Bouree.” As a story song with opaque lyrics and jarring tempo changes, “Back to the Family” is the forerunner to Thick as a Brick. The only major flaw in this album is the mix, which divides the electric and acoustic instruments and fails to find a solid center. The LP comes with a “pop-up” jacket interior.

Jim Ed Brown was an American country singer-songwriter who came to fame as a member of the 1950’s vocal group The Browns, where he was the band’s lead male vocalist. In 1965, when the group was still together, he embarked on a solo career that would eventually eclipse the success of The Browns. Jim Ed Brown had his greatest success in the late 1970’s, when he regularly performed duets with Helen Cornelius.

„Root Down“ is a 1972 live jazz album by Jimmy Smith, released on the Verve label. It was recorded in Los Angeles on February 8, 1972. It includes the song ‘Root Down (And Get It)’ which was sampled by the Beastie Boys for their song ‘Root Down.’ Toward the end of his stint with Blue Note, Jimmy Smith’s albums became predictable. Moving to Verve in the mid-’60s helped matters considerably, since he started playing with new musicians (most notably nice duets with Wes Montgomery) and new settings, but he never really got loose, as he did on select early Blue Note sessions. Part of the problem was that Smith’s soul-jazz was organic and laid-back, relaxed and funky instead of down and dirty. For latter-day listeners, aware of his reputation as the godfather of modern soul-jazz organ (and certainly aware of the Beastie Boys’ name drop), that may mean that Smith’s actual albums all seem a bit tame and restrained, classy, not funky. That’s true of the bulk of Smith’s catalog, with the notable exception of Root Down. Not coincidentally, the title track is the song the Beasties sampled on their 1994 song of the same name, since this is one of the only sessions that Smith cut where his playing his raw, vital, and earthy. Recorded live in Los Angeles in February 1972, the album captures a performance Smith gave with a relatively young supporting band who were clearly influenced by modern funk and rock. They push Smith to playing low-down grooves that truly cook: ‘Sagg Shootin’ His Arrow’ and ‘Root Down (And Get It)’ are among the hottest tracks he ever cut, especially in the restored full-length versions showcased on the 2000 Verve By Request reissue. There are times where the pace slows, but the tension never sags, and the result is one of the finest, most exciting records in Smith’s catalog. If you think you know everything about Jimmy Smith, this is the album for you.

Good luck to Joey Alexander if he wants to avoid any comment about his very young age… The pianist’s third studio album is released and he’s only sixteen! Born in 2003 in Bali, Alexander lived in Jakarta between the age of 8 and 10 before moving to New York in 2014, where he’s had one of the most searing career jumps in the history of jazz. Dubbed by godfathers such as Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis, the Indonesian prodigy reinterpreted standards like Lush Life, Round Midnight, I Mean You and It Might As Well Be Spring on My Favorite Things, his first studio recording released in 2015, in a duo and trio with Larry Grenadier, and the excellent bass player Brad Mehldau… The following year, he passed a new milestone by writing most compositions himself on his second opus, Countdown, collaborating once again with Grenadier, as well as bass player Dan Chmielinski, drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., and saxophonist Chris Potter… With Eclipse, Joey Alexander once again takes our breath away, as he never plays the card of technical show-off or needless virtuosity. Not once! His piano is deep. Jason Olaine, the producer on this 2018 album, corroborates the hype: “Joey is a young musician with an incredible talent, but he never omits to truly create and always tries to have fun playing. He’s not running after rewards or acclaim. Eclipse shows how much he’s committed to an amazing adventure.”

Inspired by the total solar eclipse of August 21st, 2017, this album features six original compositions interpreted by bass player Reuben Rogers, drummer Eric Harland and on three tracks, saxophonist Joshua Redman. Alexander also covers a selection of very special tracks such as the Beatles’ Blackbird, John Coltrane’s Moment’s Notice, Bill Evans’ Time Remembered, and Ray Noble’s classic The Very Thought Of You. But no matter the work he approaches, his determination, his musical sense, the finesse with which he integrates space into his music merely leave us speechless. –  Clotilde Maréchal

Widely regarded as peerless on the Hammond B3 organ, Joey DeFrancesco releases his first ever quartet album, an impassioned tale of love and peace titled ‘Project Freedom’. Aside from the always prominent influence of his hometown of Philadelphia, the album is largely inspired by the differing viewpoints he has been exposed to from years of globetrotting and world touring. “I always thought that as touring musicians, we were spreading peace,” he explains. “No matter what happens in the world, we keep playing. In a lot of the so-called forbidden places too. When we’re there, through war and conflict, problems melt away through music.” Joey DeFrancesco & The People, a unit he’ll tour with in 2017, features guitarist Dan Wilson, saxophonist Troy Roberts, and drummer Jason Brown.

Throughout years of travelling, John Andrews has documented his life with his home recordings. His first record, Bit By The Fang, found him living in the amish country of Lancaster, PA. On his latest record, Bad Posture, he waves farewell to Pennsylvania and greets the wooded hills of Barrington, NH. These songs were written slowly and quietly throughout the winter, usually late at night next to the wood stove. It was recorded in Andrews’ barn with the doors ajar, welcoming the springtime inviting the outside noises in. You can hear the crickets chirping and the occasional truck driving by. The songs themselves lend their hand like slow backwoods Beatles demos covered in a thin blanket of tape hiss. Andrews’ band, The Yawns, has been crystallized with staples from the New England freak scene: Rachel Neveu and Lukas Goudreault (MMOSS / Soft Eyes) and Joey Schneider. The album was mixed with headphones at the foot of Emma Critchett’s grave, who lived in the Yawns’ house during the 1800s. The record is an ode to her and all who have lived there. It paints a picture of living in the ”freecountry” on the precipice of a rapidly changing political climate.

Known to some as drummer for Quilt and keyboardist for Woods, the also singer/songwriter John Andrews changed things up a little for his second solo album, Bad Posture. For one, he relocated from Pennsylvania Amish country to the woods of Barrington, New Hampshire. It was there that he recorded the album in the barn of a Colonial farmhouse shared with other musicians. He also invited his housemates to perform on the album, essentially functioning as the previously fictional half of John Andrews & the Yawns. They included Rachel Neveu, Lukas Goudreault, and Joey Schneider, from bands such as Mmoss and Soft Eyes. What remains constant on his return is Andrews’ easygoing, trippy roots pop, seasoned here with the occasional crickets or passersby, as he welcomed in the natural environs. Replete with ambling guitar and keyboard tunes, the record opens with slightly off-kilter AM radio vibes on “Drivers.” Warm strummed guitars and hazy double-tracked vocals are reinforced with piano, slide guitar, and hippie-styled vocal harmonies, while glitchy touches of electric guitar and pitch bending keep things a little wonky as the singer tries to clarify “I don’t know you no more/Don’t owe you no more.” The brief “Home Is Just as Good as Any Place” relies instead on the keyboard, sometimes slightly off pitch, a recurring motif on the otherwise solidly harmonious set. The album seems to come to an understated climax midway through the track list on “Relax.” Part piano rag, part woodland dream pop, and part bleepy noise experiment, the song is steered by a typically breezy melody that has Andrews repeating, among other lyrics, “Don’t you know you’re feeling fine?” Throughout, the album is approachable though textured, sweet but a bit askew, and classic, almost country-like at times, yet distinctly indie in its approach. It’s an effective balance that one needn’t pay much mind while enjoying Bad Posture’s unsettled sylvan charms. ~ Marcy Donelson
