With “Glow of Benares”, saxophonist/composer Lars Møller summarises 25 years of working with Indian music. On this recording, whose title refers to the holiest of the sacred cities in Hinduism, Indian melodic ragas and rhythms are combined with the orchestral formats of jazz and western music, as the two Indian musicians Kala Ramnath and Abhijit Banerjee meet the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra and the Danish Sinfonietta.

Lars Moller leads a line-up of Danish and Indian jazz musicians, who merge two worlds on ‘Glow of Benares’- 25 years ago, Moller studied jazz in New York before going to India to study their traditional instruments and the raga. This release is a follow up to what is considered the climax so far in Moller’s career as a jazz composer, “ReWrite of Spring” (2015), which was a large-scale reworking of Stravinsky’s iconic ‘Le Sacre du printemps.” All About Jazz wrote “Ambitious project, brilliantly conceived,” while Downbeat Magazine wrote: “A soaring, sprawling conception, combining exquisite detail with monumental vision.” This colorful and dramatic album of compositions which combine Indian melodic ragas and rhythms with the orchestral formats of jazz and western music is expected to be just as well received.

Tracklist:
01 – Glow of Benares
02 – Indian Skies
03 – Funky Jog
04 – Indian Train Ride
05 – Epilogue: Mumbai Footprints

Recorded at DR Koncerthuset, Studio 2, on 7-8 May 2016.

Legendary American singer and pianist Leon Russell has entertained the world for five decades, getting his start as an in-demand Wrecking Crew session player and playing on hundreds of hit records before he began releasing his own albums in 1967. His latest studio album, titled “Life Journey”, features newly-written, original songs and Russell’s turns on classics that resonate with the two-time GRAMMY winner as important to his musical trajectory. The album is produced by Tommy LiPuma and executive produced by Elton John, with whom Russell most recently collaborated for 2010’s critically acclaimed album, The Union.

Prior to his Elton John-endorsed career resurrection via the 2010 duet album The Union, Leon Russell cranked out self-released oddities to little notice. Once The Union again made Russell a draw, there was little chance that he would revive his MIDI keyboards, and Life Journey indeed stays far, far away from those cramped, tinny settings, preferring to revive the loose-limbed, woolly Tulsan rock & roll that made his reputation. Working with Tommy LiPuma — a veteran producer who had never recorded with Russell but who helmed many successful jazz sessions, including George Benson’s Grammy-winning Breezin’ — Russell primarily sticks to standards, whether they’re by Robert Johnson, Hoagy Carmichael, or Billy Joel, and that’s how it should be. Although he’s a fine songwriter, as evidenced here by his two originals — “Big Lips” and “Down in Dixieland,” raucous numbers both — Russell is a stylist, bending songs to fit his swinging piano and slow drawl. He may occasionally follow a straight line with a ballad but he knows how to draw out the phrases on “That Lucky Old Sun,” finding an unexpected contour in familiar melody, and he finds funk in “Come On in My Kitchen” while tearing up “Fever” and leaving “New York State of Mind” as a splashy big-band celebration of the Big Apple. This small list suggests how Life Journey touches upon much of the music Russell has sung over the years — it’s heavy on R&B, blues, jazz, and swing, but strangely lacking in much country — and LiPuma is a perfect match for this celebratory approach. Where The Union occasionally veered toward the austere, Life Journey is robust and soulful, emphasizing the raggedness of Russell’s voice and smooth boogie in his playing. It’s a joyous thing to hear, a record that recaptures much of the magic of Leon’s Shelter records without being fussy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

2xHD presents a beautifully remastered rerelease of Live at the Village Vanguard from the Les McCann Trio. Recorded in stereo at the Village Vanguard on July 16, 1967 by George Klabin and featuring McCann on piano with bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Frank Severino, this was one of McCann’s last jazz recordings before his turn to R&B in the 1970s.

McCann first gained some fame in 1956 when he won a talent contest in the Navy as a singer that resulted in an appearance on television on The Ed Sullivan Show. After being discharged, he formed a trio in Los Angeles. McCann turned down an invitation to join the Cannonball Adderley Quintet so he could work on his own music. He signed a contract with Pacific Jazz and in 1960 gained some fame with his albums Les McCann Plays the Truth and The Shout. His soulful, funk style on piano was influential and McCann’s singing was largely secondary until the mid-’60s. He recorded many albums for Pacific Jazz during 1960-1964, mostly with his trio but also featuring Ben Webster, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Blue Mitchell, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Pass, the Jazz Crusaders, and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra.

Les McCann reached the peak of his career at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival, recording “Compared to What” and “Cold Duck Time” for Atlantic (Swiss Movement) with Eddie Harris and Benny Bailey. After the success of Swiss Movement, McCann emphasized his singing at the expense of his playing and he began to utilize electric keyboards.

This album features Lionel Hampton’s first concert at the Newport Jazz Festival and overall is quite exciting. Hampton gathered together an all-star alumni band that, in addition to trombonist Al Grey, Frank Foster on tenor and a couple of appearances by pianist Milt Buckner, boasts the extraordinary trumpet section of Snooky Young, Jimmy Nottingham, Joe Newman and Wallace Davenport. The climax is provided on Hamp’s perennial “Flying Home” which finds Illinois Jacquet reprising and then extending his famous solo.

Released in 1996, Louder Than Words was Lionel Richie’s first album of new material in 10 years. Fans welcomed Richie back with enthusiasm; the album peaked at number 28 and sold over half-a-million copies in the US.

After the greatest-hits collection Back to Front disappeared without a trace in 1992, Lionel Richie spent four years making Louder Than Words, his first album for Mercury Records. Although there are some slight attempts to incorporate new jack and hip-hop influences into Richie’s sound, Louder Than Words relies on his trademark balladeering, which remains his forte. All of the weak moments on Louder Than Words are ill-advised forays into rap – to put it bluntly, he can rap about as well as Snoop Dogg can sing. Although the ballads aren’t as strong as his late-’70s and early-’80s standards, they are nevertheless pleasant, which makes the record a worthwhile purchase for fans.

“Sacrum Profanum” represents a new beginning for Polish violinist Adam Bałdych – but also a look back into his past. He was once a sixteen-year-old firebrand who set out to conquer the jazz world. And when his ACT debut album “Imaginary Room” came out in 2011, he was hailed by the respected German broadsheet the FAZ as having “the finest technique among all living violinists in jazz”. The audacity of Bałdych’s lines was so breathtaking, he could almost have been playing a wind instrument; his multi-voiced motifs were more like chord-playing by pianists, and over and above these aspects was the ever-present desire to experiment and to transcend genre boundaries.

And yet all of this, right up to and including two recent albums with the Helge Lien Trio, can now be seen as just a starting-point for the voyage of self-discovery that Bałdych has documented on “Sacrum Profanum”. Like many other people in these manic, frenetic times, he found that he was searching more than ever for harmony, certainty, timeless values and indeed some truths about himself. I decided to reach out for sacred music, from the medieval mystic Hildegard of Bingen and the renaissance composer Thomas Tallis to the contemporary Russian avant-gardist Sofia Gubaidulina,” Bałdych explains. “My goal was to capture the timeless beauty of the mystical music of these exceptional composers and interpret their work through contemporary musical language.”

Alongside five pieces from this heritage (in addition to those already mentioned, there is one by Gregorio Allegri and the “Bogurodzica” – composer unknown) there are five new compositions by Bałdych himself. What unites all of them is a combination of the spirit of improvisational freedom and an inclination towards a classical sound.

“As a young violinist, I was expelled from music school for playing jazz, for improvising and for rebelling against classical music in an attempt to redefine the sound of the violin. Now, once again, I felt the imperative to connect with my greatest inspiration at the moment – classical music,” is how Bałdych explains the back-story of “Sacrum Profanum”.

Together with his outstanding Polish band of Krzysztof Dys on piano, Michal Baranski on bass and David Fortuna on drums, he has been intent on exploring the possibilities in sound offered by New Music. Orchestral instruments such as the Gran Cassa, cymbals or gongs were added, and the piano was prepared for some of the pieces. And Bałdych himself drew inspiration from the unique sound qualities of the Renaissance violin.

Just in case there might be any misunderstanding: “Sacrum Profanum” is not a classical album, and certainly not a new-age album. Bałdych’s esthetic has no boundaries, blends the depth and language of new classical music and yearning to convey personalities through self-expression of jazz. His music is deeply rooted in rich European tradition, with Polish and Eastern European spices.

And quiet it is not. Yes, there are meditative passages, where the sound is shaped in a classical, form-conscious way; but these episodes stand in contrast with fast, furious and rocky outbursts (especially in “Repetition”) and rhythm playing that is generally pretty forceful. Even Hildegard of Bingen’s “O Virga ac diadema” acquires a fast, driving feel as it sways back and forth. And Gubaidulina’s “Concerto For Viola And Orchestra” becomes a roisterous suite, somewhere between a film soundtrack and free jazz. Bałdych’s concluding solo on “Jardin” almost sounds like a pop song. He plays it without using the bow, just plucking and striking the violin strings. He has taken all the elements that have made his music so distinctive and put them into the mix on this album. Or, as he puts it: “For me, contemporary virtuosity is based on the most sophisticated and varied of sounds, full of new colours and different techniques, which I discover by experimenting on my instrument. It gives me an infinite sea of possibilities.”

Adam Bałdych went in search of his own new form of expressiveness. And on “Sacrum Profanum”, he has found it.

Adam Bałdych’s new album is called “Brothers,” and is dedicated to the memory of his brother who passed away. The violinist is able truly to portray the entire gamut of emotions through music. In the pianissimo moments it is replete with feeling and also clarity, and on the other hand Bałdych can take it to a point where it is so strong and loud it feels almost ready to burst. “I would like my music,” says Bałdych, “to ingrain itself into the present time, and also to reflect it. It should take on board the cares and the yearnings of now.

The title of Adam Bałdych’s previous album from 2015 was “Bridges”. And indeed, the Polish violinist is one of the leading builders of bridges between genres in current European jazz. Only 31 years old, he already has a whole sheaf of distinguished awards to his name, notably an ECHO Jazz Prize. His music combines Polish folk, classical music and many different kinds of jazz. He plays with an astonishing technical range, in which classical finesse is combined with swirling improvisation – and the defiant energy and power of rock music. Since 2015, Bałdych has been building these kinds of bridges in the company of the Norwegian Helge Lien Trio. “With Helge, Frode and Per Oddvar we have clocked up thousands of kilometres together; these musicians are way more than just a backing band,” says the violinist.

Adam Bałdych’s new album is called “Brothers,” and is dedicated to the memory of his brother who passed away. So, for Bałdych and his band colleagues, it is about far more than either mere virtuosity or entertainment. “I would like my music,” says Bałdych, “to ingrain itself into the present time, and also to reflect it. It should take on board the cares and the yearnings of now. What I really wish for my music is that it should convey a message about love and beauty; more than ever we ought to feel that we are brothers and sisters, in order to understand each other better.” This lofty goal is reflected in track titles such as “Faith”, “Love”, “One” and “Shadows”. And through all that shared experience of playing with Helge Lien on piano, Frode Berg on bass and Per Oddvar Johansen on drums, Bałdych has the ideal means to express many different aspects of brotherliness through music. The group is also joined on some tracks by Norwegian saxophonist Tore Brunborg, known for his work with artists such as Tord Gustavsen and Manu Katchè.

That deep sense of brotherliness between musicians is the starting-point for this band: “Only with complete trust and understanding can we achieve the objective of musical unity,” says Bałdych. “What we want is to embark on musical journeys without compromises, and to have the courage to discover the unknown.” This unity in their way of making music shines through in all nine tracks on this CD, of which eight are original compositions by Bałdych. The album also hangs together convincingly as a whole – to some extent it has become a concept album. Bałdych draws an extended arc which runs from the heavy and rocky anthem “Elegy”, through the ballad “Faith” which carefully draws the listener into its confidence and modulates from major to minor. It then takes in a lyrical pledge of unity (”One”) and the title track “Brothers” which agitatedly circles around its theme, and arrives at a point where “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen seems to emerge from nothingness, and quietly to disappear back into it.

“Compared to our last album “Bridges”, says Bałdych, “the music in “Brothers” is ‘dirtier’ and more uninhibited. It is as if we can exist on that knife-edge between what Lacan called “the cry” and silence. And that is how the world is now: joy and tragedy can co-exist right next to each other.”

The violinist is able truly to portray the entire gamut of emotions through music. In the pianissimo moments it is replete with feeling and also clarity, and on the other hand Bałdych can take it to a point where it is so strong and loud it feels almost ready to burst. The interaction of Polish and Scandinavian sounds, of the American and European traditions of improvising, and the ways in which styles and genres unite and complement each other…everything happens a way which carries that spirit of brotherliness. And so listeners are also inevitably drawn in – as spiritual brothers or sisters.

From the onset, the music in Das Lied von der Erde is permeated by a special mood. Even the texts, based on Far Eastern poetry, are more mood than content. Mahler repeatedly abandons the words’ meaning, but the mood remains. The music implies so much more than the words! For instance, the third poem evokes the reflection of a mirror image in water, but I don’t see those images anywhere in the music. Mahler is not concerned with helping us understand every syllable. If the voice, in its anguish, is drowned out by the orchestra, that is what the music is trying to achieve. Throughout a great number of passages, “beautiful tone” is not what is important. To the contrary. In Das Lied von der Erde, the singers are likewise required to declaim, cry, and shriek. I think that even those concertgoers who have no command of the German language have no problem in gaining a quite precise grasp of what is going on…

Adam Fischer’s thoughts about MAHLER‘s LIED VON DER ERDE: “Das Lied von der Erde is shot through with a special atmosphere: a mood of farewell – mostly, of course, in the last movement, Der Abschied. When attempting to construct that last movement, every conductor and every orchestra are faced with a challenge that is as complicated as it is thrilling.

In my view, the last movement of Das Lied von der Erde is the most difficult one to conduct in the entire repertoire. Mahler even abandoned the sensation of regular metre. He had stated elsewhere that one should not conduct the metre but the rhythm, but here things are different. …

I cannot disassociate this farewell from the last movement of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony. Although the slow dissolving of life is even more apparent there, the tendency is already clear in Das Lied von der Erde – a continuous line can be drawn from here to the last page of the Ninth. From the onset, the music in Das Lied von der Erde is permeated by a special mood. Even the texts, based on Far Eastern poetry, are more mood than content. Mahler repeatedly abandons the words’ meaning, but the mood remains. The music implies so much more than the words!

I think that even those concertgoers who have no command of the German language have no problem in gaining a quite precise grasp of what is going on… “

Two years after the release of her critically-acclaimed debutBeyond the Bloodhounds, Nashville-based modern blueswoman Adia Victoria returns with Silences. The albumwas recorded withAaron Dessner(The National) at his studio in upstate New York. Throughout the album’s 12 tracks, Victoria brings the topics of mental illness, drug addiction, sexism, and all the elements that consume the day-to-day lives of women attempting to make a world of their own.

Still unknown on this side of the Atlantic yet already highly acclaimed on American soil, Adia Victoria has quietly released her second album, Silences. Based in Nashville, the 32-year-old singer-songwriter and poetess brought out her first record in 2016, Beyond The Bloodhounds, a reference to the African-American activist Harriet Jacobs. With her velvety voice, Victoria unveils here twelve tracks produced by Aaron Dessner of The National. Combining saxophones, guitars, woodwind and electronic instruments to create a more developed sound, Adia Victoria uses Silences to confront her demons. With that in mind, you can see why she sees her music more like intimate blues rather than indie pop. “I wanted to put the fangs back into the blues. In my opinion, it’s the original punk music. It was people singing songs about messages they couldn’t speak because they’d be killed.” Enchanting.  – Charlotte Saintoin

Isn’t it true that the sounds of the harp soar directly up to heaven? The program idea of the splendid young French harpist Agnès Clément, who won the ARD competition in 2016, is absolutely compelling: a production featuring music that renders homage to the birds. On her first Genuin album, she gazes at the nightingale, quarrels with the cuckoo, and flies with the swallow into the spring, as love truly takes wing in the exciting artist’s debut release. We hear Francis Poulenc alongside François Couperin, Franz Liszt together with Paul Hindemith – in the original and in arrangements. Perfectly balanced to the last detail …

Time and Again: The Ultimate a-ha is a greatest hits compilation album by the Norwegian band a-ha. Given how hugely successful the Norwegian trio remains around the world, it’s always a little amusing to think about how many Americans still view them as only having a couple of hits. In fact, the band just celebrated their 30th anniversary last year, releasing a new album, Cast in Steel, their 10th full-length studio effort to date.

Norwegian pop trio A-ha has had their catalog revamped and repackaged a number of times since their inception in the 1980s, but 2016’s Time and Again: The Ultimate A-ha brings their canon of hits up to date with the inclusion of material from each of their ten studio albums. The first disc of this set is generally concerned with their hits, beginning, appropriately, with the sunny synths of “Take on Me” and winding chronologically through the years to the sweeping orchestral ballad “Under the Makeup” from their 2015 LP Cast in Steel. The expected tracks like “Touchy!,” “The Living Daylights,” and their lush cover of the Everly Brothers’ “Crying in the Rain” are all included alongside later-era cuts like 2000’s “Summer Moved On,” which was a number one hit in their home country. The second disc in the set is dedicated entirely to alternate mixes and remixes of their hits, some of which hold some historical value like Jellybean’s previously unreleased 1986 remix of “Cry Wolf” and Justin Strauss’ rare dub mix of “You Are the One.” For the most part, though, the offerings from this disc seem a bit superfluous and the collection might have been better represented by adding some of the previously unreleased material that was included on their 2015 deluxe reissues. Still, of A-ha’s anthology packages, this is easily the most career-spanning. ~ Timothy Monger

Under the title I vanni occulti, ensemble Al Ayre Español, led by maestro Eduardo López Banzo, offers us its personal vision of Handel’s Sonatas Op. 2. The phrase comes from the oratorio Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno (The Triumph of Time and Disillusion, 1707). The reference to this aria is not anecdotal, because Sonata No. 1 in this Op. 2 contains references to this music — an aspect that, hardly surprisingly, constitutes a characteristic element of the composition technique of the maestro from Halle. Over the course of his life, Handel composed 20 trio sonatas, 12 of which were published in London in two different collections: six sonatas were published in 1733 as Op. 2 (HWV 386–391) and another seven printed in 1739 as Op. 5 (HWV 396–402). In a disguised allusion to the vanitas allegory and the fleeting passage of time, Al Ayre Español presents, just three years after its recording of Op. 5 [Challenge Classics, CC72663], an introspective version of Op. 2, which completes and, at the same time, complements the group’s first rendition of Handel’s trio sonatas. The two recordings form a single project that offers the listener a passionate and impassioned, southern and Mediterranean version of this exquisite chamber music. This version is marked by the emergence, with particular expressive intensity, of the two aesthetic poles present in the chamber music universe of Handel (and of López Banzo himself): the most contained lyricism combined with the most explosive fury.
