Produced by Quincy Jones, Dedication is the Jazz Village debut by piano prodigy Justin Kauflin. The album features twelve original compositions by Kauflin. His style embodies – without being derivative – the “quiet fire” lyricism of Bill Evans (whom Kauflin credits as his “biggest influence at age 14”), the nimble and mercurial qualities of Bud Powell, the genial melodiousness of Herbie Hancock and a bit of Dave Brubeck’s gregarious percussiveness. Kauflin’s side men on the album are Billy Williams on drums, Chris Smith on bass, Matt Stevens on guitar and Etan Haziza on nylon guitar. Kauflin is also the subject of the award-winning documentary Keep On Keepin’ On, which chronicles his mentorship and friendship with the legendary musician and teacher Clark Terry. The film won Best New Documentary Director and the Heineken Audience Award at New York’s prestigious Tribeca Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Boulder Film Festival.

Drawing on R&B, hip-hop, jazz, pop, and Latin music, Springs’ four-song EP showcases her knack for merging old-school values with fresh and innovative styles. Empire is the second album by British rock band Kasabian, released in August 2006. The album went on to No. 1 in the UK Albums Chart upon its release and was preceded by the release of new single “Empire” on 24 July 2006. According to Tom Meighan in an interview on the album with the NME in early 2006, “Empire” is a word used by the band to describe something that is good. As of 3 May 2017 the album has sold over 800,000 copies in the band’s home country of the UK.

Practicing truth in advertising, U.K. rockers Kasabian move away from the revolutionary sleeve art that graced their debut and onto something more ornate for their elaborate follow-up album, Empire. Attacking the sophomore jinx head-on, Empire tries hard to be urgent, epic, and important, and the grand mishmash of influences – the Chemical Brothers, Primal Scream, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones – is delivered with all the conviction and swagger one desires from the scruffy crew with the Oasis-sized ego. Adding to this jumble are Sweet, Slade, and Ian Brown, who are all equally responsible for the opening title cut. Glammed-up rebel music, “Empire” is a satisfying, busy rocker that gives way to the interesting rave-up “Shoot the Runner,” which would be very T. Rex if it wasn’t for the Euro-disco Giorgio Moroder-styled bridge. From here ’til the album’s final stretch, twists, turns, and time changes are in abundance and imagination runs wild as Brit-pop smokes a hookah and sits on a multicolored toadstool. Lost in all this is the instantly grabbing songwriting of Kasabian’s debut, and to some extent, the bandmembers themselves, who often seem to be riding this swirl instead of guiding it. They regain control right about “By My Side,” a memorable, lush tune that suggests what it would sound like if James Bond film themes had proper B-sides. The winding “Stuntman” is as ambitious as anything else here but the pieces all fall into place for a change, and by the time the perfect, slowly developing closer “The Doberman” rolls around, this unapproachable effort has sort of explained itself and even seduced a little. Repeat listens help put things in place, and a familiarity with the band helps a lot, so go to their much more focused debut for the real punch, then come here when you want something bigger but not necessarily better.

“Velociraptor!” is the fourth studio album by English rock band Kasabian, released in September 2011. The album has been described as expanding upon the neo-psychedelic feel of their previous album “West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum” with a stronger emphasis on experimental song structures and instrumentation. It was released to critical acclaim and became their third UK number-one album, its lead single “Days Are Forgotten”. Q magazine listed “Re-Wired” as the number 1 track to download in their October 2011 issue.

Kasabian’s big PR problem is they’ve never had a Pulp-like wit about them, and their ability to communicate the human condition has been limited to drug trip visions and fist-pumping hippie lyrics that come off as Shaun Ryder-lite. Plus, an Oasis-esque hunger for arena domination just oozes out of this band, so they’re firmly in the “love ‘em or hate ‘em” category, and never more so than on Velociraptor! Here, they’ve got the audacity to open their album with a gong, which gives way to a Mexican trumpet riff, a funky, spy-movie bassline, and production that screams “mod!” That’s possibly the most convoluted way to go “back to basics,” as the opening “Let’s Roll Just Like We Used To” infers, but Kasabian have been a band of post-Brit-pop possibilities from the get go, so bringing in techno, ethnic sounds, and an orchestra is coming home for this impudent crew. The hurdle that must be jumped is that wild ideas sometimes take precedence over great ideas, but everything is shaped into a winner thanks to the group’s undying allegiance to the groove. It icky thumps like White Stripes on the gutsy “Re-Wired” and peaks the meters on the Chemical Brothers-like title track. If the bold lyrics don’t always work, the hooks cover that up just fine, and even as everything and two kitchen sinks are thrown at the listener — productions shifts and epic constructions abound — the album is right-sized, laying the whole circus out in 11 tracks and pulling up stakes right before the audience tires of the spectacle. Megaton beats still mix well with high-flying, Gallagher brothers-styled melodies, so anyone who wished “Setting Sun” would have supernova’d into an album will have no problem embracing this one. ~ David Jeffries

“West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum” is the third studio album by British indie rock band Kasabian, which was released in June 2009. It is also the first album by the band to not feature Christopher Karloff, the band’s lead guitarist and songwriter, following his departure during the writing stages of Kasabian’s second album, Empire. The rhythm guitarist Sergio Pizzorno took over as the main force behind the band’s song writing and also forced as lead guitarist to replace Karloff’s duties. The album name is not related to the Sydney suburb of West Ryde in New South Wales, Australia. The album was nominated for the 2009 Mercury Prize. In October 2009, it was voted the best album of the year by Q Magazine.

Most Kasabian albums are bloated pieces of work, having been created by some of the most self-assured, loudmouthed rockers since the Gallagher brothers. West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is more demented than outsized, however, replacing the ego rock of Empire with a barmy blend of electronics, acoustics, horror movie ambience, and industrial psychedelia. Producer Dan the Automator adds touches of hip-hop to the mix, too, highlighting the band’s rhythmic base by stripping back the layers of guitar and synth samples. The result is an interesting, unexpected piece of work, devoid of a militantly commercial single like Empire’s self-titled track, and lacking the shaggy Madchester vibes that Christopher Karloff brought to 2004’s Kasabian. If the band’s eponymous debut was the soundtrack to a drug-filled night in England’s trendiest club, then West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is the soundtrack to the subsequent walk home, when the club has kicked out its last patrons and the streets are dark and forbidding. There’s enough psychedelia here to partially thwart the shadowy electronics — for every “Vlad the Impaler,” there’s a trippy counterpart like “Secret Alphabets” — and Kasabian often augments the new approach with old habits, like the dance-rock chorus that bisects the anxious, minimalist shuffle of “Fire.” Most of West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum canvasses unfamiliar territory, however, a wise move for a group has routinely struggled to escape the shadow of its influences. ~ Andrew Leahey

66 years old and with a discography stretching to forty albums, Kenny Werner comes from a line of discreet but indispensable jazzmen. Still animated by a great spirituality, his piano is venerated by colleagues who know the value of this musician who played with the greats like Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Mel Lewis, Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Bob Brookmeyer, Joe Henderson, Al Cohn, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, Brian Blade and Lee Konitz. As for his extensive teaching (Brad Mehldau was one of his students), he confirms here the total devotion to jazz which has marked his whole life. A beauty and a serenity which he couples with consummate creativity. This album, which he has made with the help of his rhythm section (the double–bassist Johannes Weidenmüller and the wonderful drummer Ari Hoenig have been with him for years) is rich and abundant. On their re-imaginings of standards like The Song Is You or If I Should Lose You, the trio take some delicious risks. In terms of the writing, there too, the three musicians’ creativity reaches its zenith: where they work together, and where they spar.

Brian Todd Collins, better known by his stage name Kid Ink, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and former record producer. On February 3, 2015, he released his third studio album Full Speed, which spawned the successful singles “Body Language”, “Hotel”, and “Be Real”.

A club-worthy artist who’s not entirely crass, rapper Kid Ink loves hooks and slick beats above all else, and yet he’s always entertaining, sometimes surprisingly nimble with his lyrics, and often comes up with wonderfully odd touches that are inspired by the left field. That latter bit is reflected in the DJ Dahi-produced “Faster,” a grinding, post-Yeezus number squeezed through a compressing filter so that it comes out sounding like precog rap-rock. The medium warm “Every City We Go” is risky enough to recast the traptastic Migos as Drake-like dreamers, but “Blunted” is a bigger misstep from the pop side as it borrows some from Migos, and some from Lil B, while forgetting all that makes the Kid unique. Still, with worthy singles “Body Language,” “Hotel,” and “Be Real” added to the mix, there’s much more fire than fodder here, enough to satisfy returning fans along with party people of all flavors. ~ David Jeffries

The award-winning songwriter and vocalist returns to the Adult Pop spotlight with her long-awaited fourth album. Sandwiched in-between originals are classics from Nina Simone, Ruth Brown and Frank Sinatra. Billboard raves, “Lucy’s a ball, equally appreciable for fans of melodic sing-along baubles and highbrow aficionados of finely honed musical composition.” Lucy is touring with Rod Stewart and Snarky Puppy throughout 2016.

Lucy Woodward is a soulful, throaty singer whose eclectic sound has found her touching upon a mix of radio-friendly roots rock, torchy jazz, and ’60s Brill Building-style pop. On her fourth studio album, 2016’s Til They Bang on the Door, she moves away from the urbane jazz and Baroque soundscape of 2010’s Hooked!, and digs into an earthy blues and R&B vibe. Helping Woodward this time out is Snarky Puppy bassist Michael League, who co-produced the album along with Hooked! producer Henry Hey. Together, League and Hey (both of whom also play on the album) put Woodward’s voice front and center, framing her in an organic mix of guitars, horns, drums, and keyboards, including at various times, Snarky Puppy’s guitarist Chris McQueen, organist Cory Henry, and saxophonist Chris Bullock. The result is an album that, while layered with deft horn and string arrangements, often sounds as if it were recorded live. On past albums, Woodward struck a balance between using the highly resonant, gritty end of her vocal range and the more lyrical, velvety end. Here, while there is also a balance, Woodward leans heavily toward the grit, delving headlong into cuts like the noir-ish R&B of “Ladykiller” and her bluesy, kinetic reading of the Nina Simone number “Be My Husband.” Elsewhere, Woodward splits the difference between old-school and contemporary influences with cuts like “Kiss Me Mister Histrionics,” which sounds like Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings covering a Bruno Mars song, and “Live Live Live,” which sounds tantalizingly like Janelle Monae backed by a Bobby McFerrin-led a cappella ensemble. One gets the sense that ever since her more pop-oriented debut, 2003’s While You Can, Woodward has pushed to incorporate more of her jazz, blues, and R&B influences. Thankfully, with League and Hey having her back, Woodward is able ignore standard pop expectations and completely go with her instincts.
