Another singer, another wowser! Tuesday it was Allegra Levy, today it’s Marty Elkins. Two girls successfully mining the GASbook, both able to convey the emotions expressed by the lyricists without over-emoting. Unlike Levy, Elkins doesn’t stray into more contemporary waters but stays well within the ‘golden era’ that stretched from the 1920s to the mid-1950s. This isn’t a criticism of either. Both do what they do do, well. lkins got hooked on jazz when at college in Boston. She discovered a copy of Billie’s Lady in Satin in a Woolworth’s bargain bin. The gal was hooked!

Moving to New York, she sang at the legendary, and now long gone, 52nd St. club Jimmy Ryan’s as part of Max Kaminsky’s band and still free-lances in and around the New York scene

All of the songs have historic affiliations with legendary jazz/popular music divas such as Ella; Billie; Dinah’s Washington and Shore; Ethel Waters; Bessie Smith; Lavern Baker; Dorothy Squires; Alice Faye and even Mae West. I think they’d all approve and yet, Lee Wiley is the name that springs to my mind. The same relaxed, laid-back interpretation that characterised the singer who also moved around in Kaminsky’s circle (Eddie Condon and co.). There’s also a lovely Fats Waller song that’s new to me – How Can You Face me?

Kellso is at his most lyrical – Ruby Braff lives! Chirillo’s guitar is full chorded both in solo and comping. George Barnes the inspiration. Ash, totally relaxed on piano. Diamond, some funky organ fills and, helped by a simpatico rhythm section, the whole thing gels.

I’d like to think that one day I may catch Marty Elkins live. Trump’s visiting these isles in the near future, maybe she could hitch a ride or, better still, take his place. Then again, there’s an annual classic jazz party that takes place just outside of Whitley Bay but well within earshot of a Buddy Boldon trumpet solo. Elkins, Kellso and the above gang would slot in just fine…

Megosh – Apostasy (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 49:42 minutes | 636 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Outerloop Records

Timing is everything, so it’s a shame that Megosh’s sophomore record got the end of the year treatment, when no one is looking for new releases. It’s no major issue, as Apostasy has all the hallmarks of an album you discover long after it’s out. The Maryland band plays a style of progressive post-hardcore that’s seen a mild resurgence; it falls somewhere between Coheed and Cambria, Pierce The Veil, and I The Mighty (with some of Ice Nine Kill’s theatricality). It’s also 14 songs long, and it’s definitely an album album, one meant to be digested as a whole rather than in sections, making it not exactly easily approachable, at least on the surface. That’s all a shame, as Megosh’s pop sensibilities are readily apparent from the get-go, and despite establishing an impressive take on prog/post-hardcore, no two songs sound the same. This makes for a consistently entertaining listen that only gets better with repeat spins. Even the more “standard” post-hardcore tune “Waste of Me” showcases the melodic and technical flair that elevates these songs.

Over the course of this 50-minute album, there are some points that feel like they could be cut out. “Buffalo!” is a nice chance of pace from the early onslaught, but it’s mostly a throwaway track, especially preceding the excellent piano jam, “Jackson Pollack’s Portrait of Kennedy”. Also, “Okay, So This Should Is About You” and “Ask Your Mother” highlight how thin the line is between success and mediocrity for the band. They aren’t bad songs, but they pale in comparison to the rest of the record.

Three of the final four songs right things (“Ice Melts” is fine as an acoustic number) and leave a lasting impression. Megosh are clearly the real deal, and their excellent sophomore record reveals a band to watch. Those looking for post-hardcore that is equally hooky and heady are sure to love Apostasy.

This second offering in Davis’ Genre: Music series defies singular musical styles. Enlisting the help of many of his friends and colleagues, this 14-track album contains a unique blend of styles which the bassist and producer refers to simply as “music”, with influences “as labeled by the music industry” including gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, pop, soul/funk, and hip hop. A Los Angeles native, Melvin Lee Davis was discovered at the tender age of 16 by Buddy Miles, when a horn player from Buddy Miles’ band heard Melvin playing in a local club. He has toured and recorded with Chaka Khan, the Pointer Sisters, Lee Ritenour, Bryan Ferry, David Benoit, Larry Carlton, Patti Austin, Gladys Knight, and many other top acts.

Sorcerer, the third album by the second Miles Davis Quintet, is in a sense a transitional album, a quiet, subdued affair that rarely blows hot, choosing to explore cerebral tonal colorings. Even when the tempo picks up, as it does on the title track, there’s little of the dense, manic energy on Miles Smiles this is about subtle shadings, even when the compositions are as memorable as Tony Williams’ “Pee Wee” or Herbie Hancock’s “Sorcerer.” As such, it’s a little elusive, since it represents the deepening of the band’s music as they choose to explore different territory. The emphasis is as much on complex, interweaving chords and a coolly relaxed sound as it is on sheer improvisation, though each member tears off thoroughly compelling solos. Still, the individual flights aren’t placed at the forefront the way they were on the two predecessors it all merges together, pointing toward the dense soundscapes of Miles’ later ’60s work. It’s such a layered, intriguing work that the final cut, recorded in 1962 with Bob Dorough on vocals, is an utterly jarring, inappropriate way to end the record, even if it’s intended as a tribute to Miles’ then-girlfriend (later, his wife), Cicely Tyson (whose image graces the cover).

Millie Jackson has never had the full recognition she deserves as one of the great soul voices of the 70s as her theatrical ‘rap’ material became her signature sound. With ‘Exposed’ we go a long way to rectifying that with a dozen remixes by producer/engineer Steve Levine. Steve has piloted hits for a very wide range of artists from Culture Club’s huge chart successes to the Beach Boys and Motrhead, having collected a Grammy along the way for his work with Deniece Williams.

Following the release of their 2017 album, “Defying Gravity”, Mr. Big set out on a trek that took them all over the world to promote the new release in a live setting. Anyone who has ever had the distinct pleasure of seeing the band live knows that the virtuoso musicianship and incredible vocals are on full display in this setting. By this time, drummer Pat Torpey’s battle with Parkinson’s Disease had been made public, but Pat toured with the band regardless and sat behind the drum kit for select songs, while alsoproviding background vocals, tambourine, etc. on other tracks when Matt Starr was taking his turn on the kit. Captured at a stop in Milan, IT, “LIVE FROM MILAN” has a tracklisting that will surely satisfy long-time and newer fans of the band, and of coursecontains bass and guitar solos from the always entertaining and awe inspiring Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert, respectively.Sadly, this would be one of Pat Torpey’s last performances with the band as he passed away from complications due to Parkinson’s in early 2018. The set captures a special moment in time for the band and also serves as a “greatesthits” of sorts as they hit on all their classic songs from the early albums as well as revered material from newer releases.

Country songwriter and recording artist Nat Stuckey originally worked as a DJ before forming his first country band in the late ’50s and becoming a regular on the Louisiana Hayride show. It was during this time that he was signed to the Paula label out of Shreveport, LA, and scored a minor hit with 1966’s “Sweet Thang.” His next hit came as a songwriter, however, when Buck Owens recorded “Waitin’ In Your Welfare Line.” Stuckey profited from the publishing royalties, and followed up with another big hit, writing “Pop a Top” as recorded by Jim Ed Brown. He recorded a few other hits such as 1968’s “Plastic Saddle” and “Sweet Thang and Cisco,” but he became known more as a songwriter than a performer in his own right. Stuckey later worked in commercials.

NEEDTOBREATHE – Forever On Your Side (Niles City Sound Sessions) (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 17:40 minutes | 311 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Atlantic Records

NEEDTOBREATHE has been churning out music regularly since 2006, when their first major label release, Daylight, hit the market. In 2018, they are now six full-length albums and various EP’s into their career with a great track record of high quality with each new release. With the 2016 album H A R D L O V E, the band leaned into modern synthesizers, mixing them with the southern rock/alternative sound they have made their career on. It was a needed artistic step, but it left some longtime fans frustrated. It took this reviewer time to warm to it, but H A R D L O V E eventually won me over with some of the tightest songs they had written up to that point. That brings us to the Forever On Your Side (Niles City Sound Sessions) EP, which continues sonically along the path started by H A R D L O V E and the Hard Cuts EP from last year. If you’re looking for more of the roaring rock of The Reckoning and The Outsiders, then these four songs may leave you wanting. However, if this newer sound works for you, there are some nice introspective moments to enjoy.

“Bridges Burn” is a good (albeit subdued) way to kick off the EP, and takes top honors for this reviewer’s favorite song. It feels like the most comfortable of these four to fit right at home with the H A R D L O V E era. A mid-tempo piano leads as the music simmers, and Bear Rinehart wails the lyrics, “I wanna watch all my bridges burn/Stand in the rain ’til the/page is turned/Dance in the light of a lesson/learned, lesson learned/I wanna leave everything that hurts.” There is something charming about the earnestness of second track “Darling,” as Bear croons road weary lines to his wife, “Darling, won’t you talk with me for a little while?/We ain’t got nowhere to be/Oh and I’ve come so many miles/Darlin’, won’t you talk with me for a little while?/Or at least until the baby cries/Or we both fall asleep.” He acknowledges that the excitement of playing shows for strangers pales in comparison to being home with his family. Later in the song, he recognizes that his wife struggles with aloneness too, as she is at home raising kids and managing the house with him gone much of the time. It’s a sweet and well-executed sentiment.

“Bullets” treats the listener to some rock swagger, as horns and organ are high in the mix musically as we are lyrically reminded that, “Oh, some things can’t be undone/Some bullets that you chose/Can’t go back in the gun.” This song fits right in thematically with the others as Rinehart seems to be in a place of relational reflection. We would do well to heed the warning of speaking before we think as he seems to be warning us against this from personal experience. Closing track “Forever on Your Side” had this reviewer most excited, as it was the only previously unheard song prior to the EP release date. The thought of husband and wife duo Johnnyswim joining the NEEDTOBREATHE boys had these ears eager to hear the possibilities. Alas, these high expectations went unmet, as the song fell somewhat flat. Musically, it doesn’t really go anywhere, and lyrically though true, becomes repetitive. Although not a bad song by any stretch, it seems as though what probably works well in a live concert setting loses its magic on this recording. One last minor criticism of the EP as a whole is that many of the lyrical themes had been previously explored. However, this is the smallest of gripes as they are things we as listeners could benefit from hearing regularly.

All things told, the Forever On Your Side EP is a solid (and too short) addition to the NEEDTOBREATHE catalogue, that serves to hold fans over until their next full-length offering. That being said, hopefully the next full-length album brings back more of the southern fried rock n roll and some fresh lyrical ideas and themes, though if they continue to write fantastic songs, fans will be hard pressed to pass on anything they produce. This one is a definite must-own for fans of anything the band releases, and at least a must-hear for nominal fans of the band’s discography.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 55:30 minutes | 1,18 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Edition Records

Hailing from Finland but now resident in Brooklyn, New York, Olli Hirvonen won first prize in the 2016 Socar Montreux Jazz Electric Guitar Competition. Significantly, the jury was presided over by John McLaughlin. “Arps” opens with cascades of Robert Fripp-like quick-fire obligato notes, rapidly ascending and descending the fretboard and instantly hooking the listener. The tentative beginning to “Gravity” belies its complexity, first sounding the very essence of McLaughlin’s 4th Dimension but by the guitar break Hirvonen’s guitar begins to emulate the allegrissimo glissandi so typical of Allan Holdsworth in full flight. There’s also some fine tenor work here from Walter Smith III.

It’s not all sound and fury though, as tracks like the intricately subtle “Invisible” attest. From the outset, with its keen memorable guitar-led head, the frenetic-paced “Fundamental” is storming and one of the album’s highlights. “N.E.B.” benefits from superb ensemble interplay between the horns and guitar and the lengthy “Absolute” is a positive tour de force for trumpeter Adam O’Farrill. So the album is by no means merely a showpiece for Hirvonen. It’s very much a team effort, but undoubtedly the guitarist’s strong and imaginative compositions are key. Hirvonen himself is something of a stylistic magpie, having the rare ability to play anything from coruscating metal to fluid, bluesy guitar as heard on the lyrical “Lavola.”

With the recent untimely passing of guitar maestro Larry Coryell and the venerable McLaughlin currently on a ‘farewell’ U.S. tour (hopefully not), the World probably is in need of another jazz guitar hero right now. As depicted on the inner liner of New Helsinki, Hirvonen holds an enviable Fender Jazzmaster (a solid indicator that this guy means business), and on the strength of this album he’s most definitely a contender for guitar hero status.

The Happy Time (1968) is one of those Broadway musical flops that looks like a surefire winner on paper. It was mounted by the legendary producer David Merrick. It was based on Samuel Taylor’s successful 1950 Broadway play, which in turn was based on Robert L. Fontaine’s novel about a boy coming of age in Canada. The director/choreographer was veteran Gower Champion. An instrumental album containing most songs from the score performed by the Orch. ’70, conducted by Joe Reisman, was released by RCA Victor Broadway in 1968. Quiet Riot – Metal Health (1983/2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/192 kHz | Time – 41:07 minutes | 1,53 GB | Genre: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Pasha Records

Quiet Riot broke a lot of rock and roll history book records and made quite a bit of Noize with their mega-platinum smash Metal Health album in 1983. This hard working Los Angeles power quartet featured the great vocals and writing of front man Kevin Dubrow, bassist extraordinaire Rudy Sarzo, power drummer Frank Banali and guitar shredder Carlos Cavazo. Together, they delivered the goods in a big way, making Metal Health one of the first ever multi-platinum heavy metal albums to go number one. Thanks in part to the amazing smash cover version of Slade’s Cum On Feel The Noize, Metal Health was and still is a fixture at radio and retail.

Quiet Riot seemingly came out of nowhere in 1983, racing up the singles charts with their over-the-top cover of Slade’s “Cum On Feel the Noize” and crashing the Billboard album chart’s number one spot with their multi-million-selling Metal Health LP – the first heavy metal record to ever do so. Prior to their “overnight success,” QR had been toiling in relative obscurity for years, so that by the time they finally turned the corner, Metal Health’s meteoric success must have surprised the band even more than it did their critics and newfound fans. Though it has received its fair share of criticism, Metal Health isn’t nearly as average as some would have you believe. Say what you will, but the album’s title track continues to deliver after all these years. With its crushing guitar riff, inane lyrics, and goofy bravado, it’s heavy metal personified in all its glorious, ridiculous excess. The surprisingly laid-back groove of “Don’t Wanna Let You Go” follows the storming “Cum On Feel the Noize,” which leads into the slightly ’50s-ish “Slick Black Cadillac,” a rehashed early band favorite. “Love’s a Bitch” closes side one with plenty of venom and attitude, but despite a valiant attempt by the driving coulda-been-a-hit “Breathless,” side two falls way short of the mark. Even though “Run for Cover” is quite a stomper, the closing triplet of “Battle Axe” (Carlos Cavazo’s half-assed guitar showcase), “Let’s Get Crazy” (downright embarrassing jock rock), and “Thunderbird” (painful sub-Journey balladry) tend to understate the hugeness of the occasion. Still unquestionably the band’s best effort, Metal Health would eventually earn one-hit wonder status thanks to Quiet Riot’s inability to deliver anything resembling a decent follow-up.
