Balance of Power is the twelfth studio album by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) released in 1986. Balance of Power was the last studio album by the Electric Light Orchestra before their disbanding (the band would later reform in 2000).

After mining the Beatles gold mine for all those catchy hooks, by the time that Balance of Power was released, Jeff Lynne and company had pretty much found that once-rich vein going dry. This album did contain yet another Top 40 hit with “Calling America,” but by the mid-’80s, ELO were finding their audience and their inspiration on the wane. Not truly memorable, but passable.

Tracklist:
01 – Heaven Only Knows
02 – So Serious
03 – Getting to the Point
04 – Secret Lives
05 – Is It Alright
06 – Sorrow About to Fall
07 – Without Someone
08 – Calling America
09 – Endless Lies
10 – Send It

Discovery is the eighth studio album by British symphonic rock band, Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Discovery was the band’s first number 1 album in the UK, entering the chart at that position and staying there for five weeks.[3 – The album contained five hit songs in “Shine a Little Love”, “Don’t Bring Me Down”, “Last Train to London”, “Confusion” and “The Diary of Horace Wimp”, many of which were heavily influenced by disco.

Electric Light Orchestra continued on their winning Top 40 ways with the release of Discovery. Now pared down to the basic four-piece unit, Jeff Lynne continued to dominate the band and they still got their hits (this time around it was the smash “Don’t Bring Me Down”). Elsewhere on the disc there was, of note, “Last Train to London” and “Confusion.” Though Discovery charted well, it was becoming obvious that ELO were starting to run themselves out of useful Beatles hooks with which to fuel their hit-making machine.

Tracklist:
01 – Shine a Little Love
02 – Confusion
03 – Need Her Love
04 – The Diary of Horace Wimp
05 – Last Train to London

Electric Light Orchestra’s fourth album, released in 1974 carries a concept through the entire album and the first to feature an orchestra.

This is the album where Jeff Lynne finally found the sound he’d wanted since co-founding Electric Light Orchestra three years earlier. Up to this point, most of the group’s music had been self-contained – Lynne, Richard Tandy, et al., providing whatever was needed, vocally or instrumentally, even if it meant overdubbing their work layer upon layer. Lynne saw the limitations of this process, however, and opted for the presence of an orchestra – it was only 30 pieces, but the result was a much richer musical palette than the group had ever had to work with, and their most ambitious and successful record up to that time. Indeed, Eldorado was strongly reminiscent in some ways of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Not that it could ever have the same impact or be as distinctive, but it had its feet planted in so many richly melodic and varied musical traditions, yet made it all work in a rock context, that it did recall the Beatles classic. It was a very romantic work, especially on the opening “Eldorado Overture,” which was steeped in a wistful 1920s/1930s notion of popular fantasy (embodied in movies and novels like James Hilton’s Lost Horizon and Somerset Maugham’s The Razor’s Edge) about disillusioned seekers. It boasted Lynne’s best single up to that time, “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” which most radio listeners could never get out of their respective heads, either. The integration of the orchestra would become even more thorough on future albums, but Eldorado was notable for mixing the band and orchestra (and a choir) in ways that did no violence to the best elements of both.

Tracklist:
01 – Eldorado Overture
02 – Can’t Get It out of My Head
03 – Boy Blue
04 – Laredo Tornado
05 – Poorboy (The Greenwood)
06 – Mister Kingdom
07 – Nobody’s Child
08 – Illusions in G Major
09 – Eldorado
10 – Eldorado Finale

The Electric Light Orchestra is the debut studio album by English rock band Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), released in December 1971. In the US, the album was released in early 1972 as No Answer, after a misunderstood telephone message made by a United Artists Records executive asking about the album name. The caller, having failed to reach the ELO contact, wrote down “no answer” in his notes, and this was misconstrued to be the name of the album.

Electric Light Orchestra’s debut album is an astonishing creation in its own right, but neophyte listeners should be aware that it bears very little resemblance to the sound for which ELO would become known on its subsequent records. No Answer, as it ended up being called in America through a miscommunication with ELO’s U.S. label, is a minimalist work by comparison with anything on the band’s later albums. The core trio of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Bev Bevan, augmented by one horn player and a violinist, approaches the music alternately like a hard rock band attacking a song and a string ensemble playing a chamber piece. Filled with surprisingly loose playing and sounds throughout, and with a psychedelic aura hovering over most of the music, No Answer is unique in ELO’s output. Written and sung by Lynne, “10538 Overture” is the opener and the best song on the album. Wood’s “Look at Me Now,” by comparison, plays like a sweet, melodic follow-up to “Beautiful Daughter” from the Move’s Shazam, with some digressions on the oboe and a cello and violin subbing for the guitars. The rest moves from period-style popular songs to strangely cinematic conceptual pieces, on which the rock elements almost disappear in favor of quasi-classical playing by all concerned. A beautiful acoustic guitar workout by Wood, “1st Movement” also features the song’s composer on the oboe, while “Mr. Radio,” an exercise in 1920s nostalgia written and sung by Lynne, digresses for a moment into 1940s-style classical piano pyrotechnics. His “Whisper in the Night” ends the album with a lean and textured acoustic sound that, ironically, disappeared from ELO’s repertory when he exited the lineup following these sessions.

2 Look at Me Now 03:18

ELO 2 is the second album by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), released in 1973. In the US the album was released as Electric Light Orchestra II and is sometimes known as ELO II. It was also the last album to be released by the band under the Harvest label.

Cut during the fall of 1972, Electric Light Orchestra II was where Jeff Lynne started rebuilding the sound of Electric Light Orchestra following the departure of Roy Wood from the original lineup. It was as personal an effort as Lynne had ever made in music, showcasing his work as singer, songwriter, guitarist, sometime synthesizer player, and producer, and it is more focused than its predecessor but also retains some of the earlier album’s lean textures. Lynne, drummer Bev Bevan, bassist Mike D’Albuquerque, and keyboardist Richard Tandy comprise the core of the band, with two cellists and a violinist sawing away around them. There were holes in their sound that made the group seem somewhat ragged, as on the pounding “In Old England Town (Boogie #2)”; Lynne’s singing would also have to develop, and some of the material also showed the need of an editor. On the other hand, “From the Sun to the World (Boogie #1)” was a succinct progressive rock workout, and “Kuiama” was a decent showcase for the different sides of the group that worked about as well as any 11-minute progressive rock track of the period. But the very fact that the group’s cover of “Roll Over Beethoven” was the hit off of this album also showed how far Lynne had to go as a songwriter — there’s nothing else here one-half as good as that as a song, and the fact that the band attacked it like a buzzsaw made it one of the most bracing pieces of progressive rock to make the charts. As a patchwork job, the album holds up well, and it and the single did go a long way toward getting them the beginnings of an audience in America.

Face the Music is the fifth studio album by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), and features a new line-up following their previous studio album, Eldorado. The singles “Evil Woman” and “Strange Magic” were the most commercial songs they had recorded up to that point. “Evil Woman” was a big hit in the UK and the US, embracing disco rhythms while still embodying ELO’s classic sound. The chords and melody of this song were composed in merely six minutes, making it the fastest song Lynne has ever written.

Electric Light Orchestra’s more modest follow-up to Eldorado is a very solid album, if not as bold or unified. It was also their first recorded at Musicland in Munich, which became Jeff Lynne’s preferred venue for cutting records. At the time, he was also generating songs at a breakneck pace and had perfected the majestic, quasi-Beatles-type style (sort of high-wattage Magical Mystery Tour) introduced two albums earlier. The sound is stripped down a bit on Face the Music, Louis Clark’s orchestral contributions generally more subdued than on Eldorado, even when they compete with the band, as on “Strange Magic.” The soulful “Evil Woman” was one of the most respectable chart hits of its era, and one of the best songs that Lynne ever wrote (reportedly in 30 minutes), while “Strange Magic” showed off his writing in a more ethereal vein. “One Summer Dream,” which is written in a similar mode, also has a touchingly wistful mood about it but is a somewhat lackluster finale compared to the albums that preceded and followed this one. The requisite rock & roll number, “Poker,” is a quicker tempo than anything previously heard from the band, the guitar is pumped up louder than ever. And “Down Home Town,” an experiment in achieving a country & western sound, is fresh at this point and more interesting than the equivalent material of Out of the Blue.

On the Third Day was released in 1973 and failed to enter the UK charts at the time, although it did reach the US charts at number 52. Side two of the album was recorded during or shortly after the sessions for ELO’s LP ELO 2, but unlike its predecessor it contains shorter tracks. By contrast, the four songs on side one of the album were linked into a continuous suite. Violinist Mik Kaminski made his debut on side one of this album replacing Wilf Gibson, although Gibson plays on side two. Also, cellist Colin Walker left the line up around the same time, leaving Mike Edwards as lone cellist.

Electric Light Orchestra’s third album showed a marked advancement, with a fuller, more cohesive sound from the band as a whole and major improvements in Jeff Lynne’s singing and songwriting. This is where the band took on its familiar sound, Lynne’s voice suddenly showing an attractive expressiveness reminiscent of John Lennon in his early solo years, and also sporting a convincing white British soulful quality that was utterly lacking earlier. The group also plugged the holes that made its work seem so close to being ragged on those earlier records. “Showdown” and “Ma-Ma-Ma Belle” (the latter featuring Marc Bolan on double lead guitar with Lynne) became AM radio fixtures while “Daybreaker” became a concert opener for the group and, along with “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” kept the group’s FM/art rock credentials in order.

Out of the Blue is the seventh studio album by the British rock group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), released in October 1977. Written and produced by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne, the double album is among the most commercially successful records in the group’s history. The 30th Anniversary Edition was released in February 2007 with three bonus tracks, as part of the Legacy series.

The last ELO album to make a major impact on popular music, Out of the Blue was of a piece with its lavishly produced predecessor, A New World Record, but it’s a much more mixed bag as an album. For starters, it was a double LP, a format that has proved daunting to all but a handful of rock artists, and was no less so here. The songs were flowing fast and freely from Jeff Lynne at the time, however, and well more than half of what is here is very solid, at least as songs if not necessarily as recordings. “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” and “Turn to Stone” are among the best songs in the group’s output, and much of the rest is very entertaining. The heavy sound of the orchestra, however, as well as the layer upon layer of vocal overdubs, often seem out of place. All in all, the group was trying too hard to generate a substantial-sounding double LP, complete with a suite, “Concerto for a Rainy Day.” The latter is the nadir of the album, an effort at conceptual rock that seemed archaic even in 1977. Another chunk is filled up with what might best be called art rock mood music (“The Whale”), before you finally get to the relief of a basic rocker like “Birmingham Blues.” Even here, the group couldn’t leave well enough alone – rather than ending it on that note, they had to finish the album with “Wild West Hero,” a piece of ersatz movie music that adds nothing to what you’ve heard over the previous 65 minutes. In its defense, Out of the Blue was massively popular and did become the centerpiece of a huge worldwide tour that earned the group status as a major live attraction for a time.

Secret Messages is an album by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), released in 1983 through Jet Records. It was the last ELO album with bass guitarist Kelly Groucutt, conductor Louis Clark, and real stringed instruments, and the last ELO album to be released on Jet Records. It was also the final ELO studio album to become a worldwide top 40 hit upon release.

Originally conceived of as a double album, and wisely whittled down to one on release, Secret Messages was routine, formulaic Electric Light Orchestra. Lynne’s hooks and dense production were still in force, but it sounded more mechanized and heartless than usual, due in part to the surfeit of synthesizers on some tracks. It did include the Top 20 hit “Rock & Roll Is King.”

Time is a studio album by Electric Light Orchestra (credited only as ELO on the album’s packaging) released in 1981 through Jet Records. It is a concept album which tells a story of a man from the 1980s finding himself in the year 2095 and trying to come to terms with being unable to return and adjusting to his new surroundings.

Time takes its cues more from such bands as the Alan Parsons Project and Wings than from Jeff Lynne’s fascination with Pepper-era Beatles. Sure, all the electronic whirrs and bleeps are present and accounted for, and Time did spawn hit singles in “Hold on Tight” and “Twilight,” but on the average, ELO had begun to get too stuck on the same structure and content of their releases. “The Way Life’s Meant to Be” echoes very early ELO hits like “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” and the “Prologue” and “Epilogue” segments try and bring about a unifying concept that doesn’t quite hold up upon listening all the way through. Time proves to be competent ELO but not great ELO.

Friends is The Beach Boys’ 14th studio album originally released in 1968. Many of the album’s songs were inspired by Transcendental Meditation and the group’s recent interactions with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It was initially met with a mild critical reception and peaked at number 126 on the US Billboard charts for what was then group’s worst chart performance to date. In the UK, the album peaked at number 13.

Released when Cream and Jimi Hendrix were at their apex, the low-key pleasantries of Friends seemed downright irrelevant in mid-1968. Today it sounds better, but it’s certainly one of the group’s more minor efforts, as the members started to divide the songwriting more or less evenly among themselves, rather than letting Brian Wilson provide most of the material. The title track was a charming, if innocuous, minor hit. The bossa nova “Busy Doin’ Nothin’” was a subtly subversive piece of rock Muzak, though hindsight reveals a rather worrisome indolence in the lyrics, as penned by Wilson, who was starting to withdraw into his own world. The production and harmonies remained pleasantly idiosyncratic, but there was little substance at the heart of most of the songs. The irony was that Smile had collapsed, in part, because some of the Beach Boys felt that Wilson’s increasingly avant-garde leanings would lose their pop audience; yet by the time of Friends, the Beach Boys had done a pretty good job of losing most of their audience by retreating to a less experimental, more group-based approach.

The Beach Boys’ tumultuous career features a slew of hit singles and over 100 million records sold worldwide. Released in the ‘70s, Surf’s Up marks the band’s most artistic endeavor filled with daring and intricate harmonies. The material and its arrangements were ambitiously bold. The album includes the compelling standouts, “A Day in the Life of a Tree,” “‘Til I Die,” and “Surf’s Up.” This under-appreciated gem is an enduring testament to the band’s iconic legacy.

The Beach Boys’ post-1966 catalog is littered with LPs that barely scraped the charts upon release but matured into solid fan favorites despite – and occasionally, because of – their many and varied eccentricities. Surf’s Up could well be the definitive example, beginning with the cloying “Don’t Go Near the Water” and ending a bare half-hour later with the baroque majesty of the title track (originally written in 1966). The album is a virtual laundry list of each uncommon intricacy that made the Beach Boys’ forgotten decade such a bittersweet thrill – the fluffy yet endearing pop (od)ditties of Brian Wilson, quasi-mystical white-boy soul from brother Carl, and the downright laughable songwriting on tracks charting Mike Love’s devotion to Buddhism and Al Jardine’s social/environmental concerns. Those songs are enjoyable enough, but the last three tracks are what make Surf’s Up such a masterpiece. The first, “A Day in the Life of a Tree,” is simultaneously one of Brian’s most deeply touching and bizarre compositions; he is the narrator and object of the song (though not the vocalist; co-writer Jack Rieley lends a hand), lamenting his long life amid the pollution and grime of a city park while the somber tones of a pipe organ build atmosphere. The second, “‘Til I Die,” isn’t the love song the title suggests; it’s a haunting, fatalistic piece of pop surrealism that appeared to signal Brian’s retirement from active life. The album closer, “Surf’s Up,” is a masterpiece of baroque psychedelia, probably the most compelling track from the SMiLE period. Carl gives a soulful performance despite the surreal wordplay, and Brian’s coda is one of the most stirring moments in his catalog. Wrapped up in a mess of contradictions, Surf’s Up defined the Beach Boys’ tumultuous career better than any other album.

Beach Boys’ Party! Uncovered and Unplugged is an upcoming compilation and remix album to be released by Capitol Records on November 20, 2015. It is an 81-track expansion of Beach Boys’ Party!

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1965 release of the Beach Boys’ top 10 album Party!, group members have overseen this remixed, remastered and expanded edition, Beach Boys’ Party! Uncovered And Unplugged, which removes the overdubbed party sounds from the 12-track original album’s mix and adds 69 more songs and dialogue tracks culled from all of the band’s Party! recording sessions.

“Mike was saying, why not a party album and we can act like we are (at a party) and just be ourselves on tape, you know? And that’s what happened. It was a very spontaneous album.” –Brian Wilson

Capitol, which had already released ten Beach Boys albums in three years, was bugging the group for product that it could release in time for the 1965 Christmas season. To buy time while Brian Wilson began conceiving the Pet Sounds masterpiece, the group issued a set of covers, featuring ’50s rock and R&B hits they had listened to as schoolboys, plus some newer sounds. Packaged as if it had been recorded at an actual party, it was in fact recorded in the studio over a few sessions, with friends, family and romantic partners adding sounds and vocals to create an informal atmosphere. With the exception of a bass guitar, all the instruments were acoustic; the acoustic guitar-and-bongo arrangements, in fact, give this a hootenanny campfire feel. Since its release, this album has gone up a few notches in critical esteem, praised for its loose, casual feel and insight into the group’s influences. Realistically, though, its lasting appeal lies mostly with dedicated fans of the group, as fun and engaging as it is. It does have the massive hit “Barbara Ann,” which actually features Dean Torrence (of Jan & Dean) on much of the lead vocals; other highlights include a rousing run through “Mountain of Love,” an unexpected version of “The Times They Are a-Changin’” sung by folk fan Al Jardine,” and three Beatles covers. [The 2015 reissue of the album collects everything recorded at the sessions for Party! along with a remastered version of the original album. Along with many, many snippets of dialog that feature the Boys cutting up and cracking wise, there are multiple takes of the songs that feature on the final album (sans crowd noise, as are the rest of the session takes) and quite a few that didn’t make the final cut. Mike Love’s versions of Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” and Sonny Bono’s “Laugh at Me,” takes of “Ruby Baby,” “(I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction),” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and their own “California Girls” and “Don’t Worry Baby,” among others, were deemed not up to par. It’s a lot to wade through, but if you really love the Party! sessions, it’s time well spent. As a bonus, with a little detective work, one can piece together the original album minus the party sounds from the various sessions.] –Review by Richie Unterberger

Although somewhat unimaginatively titled, 1973’s Beach Boys in Concert is significantly more than a hastily compiled live collection of hits. To the contrary, the set includes highlights from the band’s earliest sides (“Surfer Girl”) through to the groundbreaking Smile era (“Good Vibrations” and “Heroes and Villains”) as well as more concurrent material (“Sail On Sailor” and “Marcella”). These are complemented by a generous representation of deeper cuts including “You Still Believe in Me” from Pet Sounds, “Let the Wind Blow” from Wild Honey (1968), as well as later tracks like “Leaving This Town” and “Funky Pretty.” The song “We Got Love” was originally recorded and penciled in for inclusion on Holland, but the laid-back rocker didn’t make that release and instead makes its debut here.

It’s important to note that the incarnation of the “touring” Beach Boys captured circa 1972 and 1973 does not include contributions from founding member and spiritual leader Brian Wilson. By this time the band’s personnel had expanded, featuring Blondie Chaplin (guitar/vocals) and Ricky Fataar (drums). Carl Wilson (guitar/vocals) stumbled upon the pair during their tenure in the band Flame, eventually procuring them for this harder-edged version of the group which Carl had begun molding in the absence of brother Brian. He also steps in vocally for Brian on standout renditions of “Caroline No,” “Good Vibrations,” and a co-lead vocal with Al Jardine (guitar/vocals) on an absolutely breathtaking “Don’t Worry Baby” that easily rivals the original. Other notable performances include a poignant reading of “The Trader,” as well as the upbeat driving rocker “Darlin’.” Although present, Dennis Wilson (electric piano/backing vocals) offers no solo. Sadly, his most notable contribution is the brief spoken introduction to “Surfin’ USA.” Beach Boys in Concert was the final live album to be issued — excluding archival vault releases — capturing the seminal American combo as a viable, hard-working rock & roll band with timeless material instead of the parody that Mike Love so perfectly embodied during their final years. This is the way the Beach Boys deserve to be remembered. –AllMusic Review by Lindsay Planer

Newly remastered for vinyl and in hi-res by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, The Beach Boys Today! is presented here in stereo.

The album is the eighth by the band, and featured hits such as “Do You Wanna Dance?”, “When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)”, and “Dance, Dance, Dance”. The album peaked at #4 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and the production hints at the more mature depth that would appear on albums such as Pet Sounds.

Brian Wilson’s retirement from performing to concentrate on studio recording and production reaped immediate dividends with Today!, the first Beach Boys album that is strong almost from start to finish. “Dance, Dance, Dance” and “Do You Wanna Dance” were upbeat hits with Spector-influenced arrangements, but Wilson began to deal with more sophisticated themes on another smash 45, “When I Grow Up,” on which these eternal teenagers looked forward to the advancing years with fear and uncertainty. Surf/hot rod/beach themes were permanently retired in favor of late-adolescent, early-adult romance on this album, which included such decent outings in this vein as “She Knows Me Too Well,” “Kiss Me Baby,” and “In the Back of My Mind.” The true gem is “Please Let Me Wonder,” one of the group’s most delicate mid-’60s works, with heartbreaking melodies and harmonies. Be aware that the version of “Help Me, Rhonda” found here is an inferior, earlier, and slower rendition; the familiar hit single take was included on their next album, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!). –AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger

Newly remastered for vinyl and in hi-res by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, Surfer Girl is presented here in stereo.

The stereo editions of Surfer Girl were originally mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group’s supervision.

“Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions — evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck’s skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own — but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol would prepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market,” says Alan Boyd, producer and Beach Boys’ archivist.

Surfer Girl was the third album by The Beach Boys and was originally produced by Brian Wilson on his own. The album featured numerous hits, including the title track, “Catch A Wave,” “In My Room,” “Hawaii,” “Our Car Club,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” “Your Summer Dream,” and more.

Capitol pushed the Beach Boys for too much material in too short a time for the group to maintain as much quality control as would have been desirable. Consequently, most of their pre-1965 albums contain a high degree of filler, and thus stack up poorly next to those of such contemporaries as the Beatles, who were able to maintain high standards on almost all of their tracks. Surfer Girl does have some great tunes, including the title song, the hot rod ditty “Little Deuce Coupe,” and “Catch a Wave” (which could have been a substantial hit single on its own merits). Most significant of all is the gorgeous ballad “In My Room,” which anticipated future Beach Boys releases both in its sophisticated production (strings, organ, dense harmonies) and its personal, solipsistic lyrics. The rest is surprisingly mediocre filler, especially as at this point they were restricting their lyrical themes to beach culture almost exclusively; “Your Summer Dream,” with its unusual harmonies, is about the most interesting of the obscure tracks. If you’re not a dedicated Beach Boys fan, though, you should pass, as you can find the first-rate tracks on best-of anthologies. –AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger

Smiley Smile is the 12th studio album released by the Beach Boys. The 1967 album features singles “Gettin’ Hungry”, “Heroes and Villains” and #1 US Billboard Hot 100 single “Good Vibrations”. The record was a simplified version of their original project SMiLE, which never came to be after Brian Wilson discarded a large portion of the music intended for the album.

After the much-discussed, uncompleted Smile project — which was supposed to take the innovations of Pet Sounds to even grander heights — collapsed, the Beach Boys released Smiley Smile in its place. (To clarify much confusion: Smiley Smile is an entirely different piece of work than Smile would have been, although some material that ended up on Smiley Smile would have most likely been used on Smile. Also, much of Smiley Smile was in fact recorded after the Smile sessions had ceased.) For fans expecting something along the lines of Sgt. Pepper (and there were many of them), Smiley Smile was a major disappointment, replacing psychedelic experimentation with spare, eccentric miniatures. Heard now, outside of such unrealistic expectations, it’s a rather nifty, if rather slight, effort that’s plenty weird — in fact, often downright goofy — despite Brian Wilson’s retreat from both avant pop and active leadership of the group. “Wind Chimes,” “Wonderful,” “Vegetables,” and much of the rest is low-key psychedelic quirkiness, with abundant fine harmonies and unusual arrangements. The standouts, nonetheless, were two recent hit singles in which Brian Wilson’s ambitions were still intact: the inscrutable mini-opera “Heroes and Villains,” and the number one hit “Good Vibrations,” one of the few occasions where the group managed to be recklessly experimental and massively commercial at the same time. –AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger

The Beach Boys’ live recorded performance at Finsbury Park in London in 1968. Live in London features hit songs “California Girls”, “Good Vibrations”, “Darlin” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”.

„Though their studio output is the stuff of legend, the Beach Boys’ live performances aren’t as familiar to the casual fan. Live in London (also released as Beach Boys ’69) represented the second live set from the band, after 1964’s teen-scream Beach Boys Concert. By the turn of the 1960s into the ’70s, the group was finally rising to the task of translating its lush, layered sound into a live arena. Classics like ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ and ‘Darlin” carry all of their original beauty, bolstered by the energy of the live setting and by swinging horn accompaniment. More unexpected cuts, such as the celebratory ‘Wake the World’ and a bluesy take of ‘Bluebirds Over the Mountains,’ fit in perfectly with staples like the tempo-shifting, musically precise version of ‘Good Vibrations,’ just one crowd-pleaser among many on Live in London.“ –AllMusic Review by Rovi Staff
