The pianist Zlata Chochieva is well known for creating unexpected associations. In “Chiaroscuro”, her first album for naive (V7542, 2022), she had combined the worlds of Scriabin and Mozart, in whom she hears not only the same desire for clarity and weightlessness but also a similar poetic sense of rhetoric. Her next album (“i’m Freien”, V7959, 2023), a homage to nature, revealed alongside Ravel’s Miroirs and Schumann’s Waldszenen a short cycle, so little known and graceful (Petite Histoire), by Felix Draeseke! No wonder she is now offering us, for her first album with orchestra, one of the most obscure works of Russian Romanticism, the Piano Concerto by Rimsky-Korsakov.Written in 1883 in memory of Franz Liszt, whose two opuses in the genre strongly influenced the author of Scheherazade, this Concerto, with it’s monothematic structure, built on a Russian folk theme, had greatly impressed Balakirev, who was surprised to hear such an idiomatically written soloist part, from a composer who was not a pianist himself. At the age of fourteen, Zlata Chochieva had played the work under the direction of Mikhail Pletnev, then head of the Russian National Orchestra.

This one-and-only recorded collaboration between jazz greats Geri Allen and Kurt Rosenwinkel took place live at the famed Philharmonie de Paris in 2012—the two play as if with one mind. Geri often spoke of her desire to do a studio recording to document the ‘flow and freedom” she experienced playing with Kurt that night in Paris. Unfortunately, we lost her before that date never materialized, and fortunately, that concert was recorded. The acoustics in this hall are magnificent, This album, produced by Kurt Rosenwinkel and Motéma’s Jana Herzen is dedicated to Geri’s memory and is truly a ‘lovesome thing’ for fans of Geri, of Kurt, and of piano and guitar jazz.

Both Allen and Rosenwinkel had been circling each other for several years hoping to work together. The idea of a collaboration made sense as both artists were steeped in the post-bop jazz tradition, but whose varied performance experiences and inclinations toward advanced harmonic concepts made them distinctly compatible. Several months prior to this concert, Rosenwinkel had invited Allen to sit in with his band at the Jazz Standard in New York, an ad hoc meeting of creative minds that underscored their shared love of improvisational interplay and musical flow. It is that improvisational flow and sense of being present in the creative moment that they bring to this performance. They open with the album’s title track, an impressionistic reading of the Billy Strayhorn ballad. Here, Rosenwinkel starts first, his starry chords offering a shimmering palette over which Allen paints her own cosmic, classical influenced lines. Their playing is rapturous and enveloping; it’s like looking for constellations in the night sky. It’s a vibe they sustain throughout the concert. Often it sounds as if they are discovering a song as they go along, as on “Embraceable You,” where they offer glimpses of the melody under dense harmonic chords, like sculptors chipping away at a block of stone to reveal the body hidden within. Elsewhere, they present equally artful originals, including Rosenwinkel’s “Simple #2” and Allen’s “Open-Handed Reach.” They also leap into a playful and dancerly take on Thelonious Monk’s “Ruby My Dear.” Throughout all of A Lovesome Thing, Allen and Rosenwinkel’s playing is endlessly inventive and bright with the promise of more collaborations to come. Tragically, Allen would die from cancer in 2017, just two weeks after her 60th birthday. Thankfully, we have this concert as both an indelible reminder of her artistry and the intense musical empathy she and Rosenwinkel shared. – Matt Collar

Born in Jerusalem to parents of Moroccan, Iraqi, Argentinian, and Eastern European descent, raised between Buenos-Aires and Tel-Aviv, and based out of Brooklyn since 2011, Or Bareket is one of the most prominent bassists of his generation, as well as a composer and bandleader with an eclectic yet meticulously cohesive style.Winner of the 2011 International Society of Bassists’ jazz competition, Bareket’s distinct lyricism, rhythmic dexterity, and groove-centric approach are clearly present in his playing and writing alike.
Growing up trilingual, Bareket is fascinated by how different languages and cultures intersect and diverge. Musical Practice and composition in particular are Bareket’s method of investigating spaces between and within languages, discovering, reclaiming, and weaving the different worlds lost through immigration and the worlds he currently inhabits into a personal aesthetic that attempts to include and honor all of them: his ancestral North African, Iraqi, and Latin-American folklores, his life-long study of Black American music, and his experiences making music with some of today’s foremost artists across a wide range of musical generations and stylistic orientations; Bareket has worked extensively with bands led by the likes of Joel Ross, Etienne Charles, Camila Meza, and Ari Hoenig, and has performed with artists such as Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Ben Wendel, Leon Parker, José James, Godwin Louis, Marquis Hill, Aaron Parks, Hamilton de Holanda, James Francies, Sam Yahel, Marta Sanchez, Aaron Goldberg, Savannah Harris, Chico Pinhero, Fred Nardin, and Sullivan Fortner in different settings.

‘Sleepwalker’ is the 16th studio album by The Kinks and the first to be released under a new deal with the Arista label following their departure from RCA. The album marked a significant shift for the band, as it moved away from the theatrical and conceptual work that had characterised their output in the early 1970s. ‘Sleepwalker’ signalled a return to a more conventional, mainstream rock and roll sound, with contemporary polished production and a focus on accessible melodic rock. The new approach was well-received and marked a commercial resurgence for the band, especially in the United States, where the album reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 chart. Critics praised the straightforward rock sound and Ray Davies’s signature songwriting, wit and observational style. The singles and key tracks, ‘Sleepwalker’, ‘Juke Box Music’ and ‘Life on the Road’, reflect and explore themes of escapism, identity, the music industry and life on tour.

From the moment they were founded, Mojo Man made some serious waves. It has already been several years since LABORIE Jazz became aware of the talent of Mangane, an extraordinary voice where tonality and accent transport us immediately, to Africa of course, but far beyond. A voice that creates in our mind a setting of dreams, a space for play, inner wisdom, a territory of smiles. A few collaborations led us to share his presence on stage from Solo to Quintet, but we felt that this treasure of sensations was not fully accomplished, or rather fulfilled. The idea was to share with Mangane, this observation was the trigger and made it possible from the beginning of the year 2021 to open the horizon of a strong and essential moment in the career of any artist “to let him speak out “.A meeting at the beginning of 2021 took place between the composer, arranger and bassist Alune Wade, also Senegalese. Meeting which turned out to be the right formula because these two compatriots had already met in other times, in other circumstances where the young Alune Wade was going to hear Nakodje in the four corners of Senegal. The time was now for reunions, listening and “doing together”.

Albert King’s 1999 live album In Session with Stevie Ray Vaughan is now available. Recorded live for television at CHCH-TV studios in Ontario, Canada in 1983, this is the only known recording of Vaughan and King playing together. Also featured are Tony Llorens (piano/organ), Gus Thornton (bass), and Michael Llorens (drums). This deluxe edition features the audio debut of “Born Under A Bad Sign,” “Texas Flood,” and “I’m Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town,” and has been newly remastered by Paul Blakemore.The work represents a pivotal moment in the history of the blues, with two guitar virtuosos worshipping each other on stage. This highly acclaimed and extremely rare collection celebrates the skills of these two blues giants. On ‘In Session’, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan not only redefined the art of improvised blues, but also set a new standard for live music.

This historic 1983 performance at the CHCH-TV studios in Ontario, Canada, was recorded live for television. It is the only known recording of King and Vaughan playing together. They were joined by first-class musicians such as Tony Llorens (piano/organ), Gus Thornton (bass) and Michael Llorens (drums). The new deluxe edition contains the audio release of the three tracks from the show for the first time: ‘Born Under A Bad Sign’, ‘Texas Flood’ and ‘I’m Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town’. ‘Born Under A Bad Sign (Live)’ can already be heard as a stream.

The 1983 concert recording in Ontario captures the impressive musical dialogue between the two, with Vaughan introducing King’s classic licks and expanding on them in his unique style. By 1983, Vaughan was well on his way to becoming as respected in the blues world as King. US music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote in the AllMusic review of the original album released in 1999 that Vaughan ‘had become the hot blues guitarist of the year thanks to his debut Texas Flood as well as his work on David Bowie’s hit “Let’s Dance”’. Erlewine continued, ‘Vaughan may have been the new news, but King didn’t suffer either. He had a world-class backing band and played as well as he ever had. In other words, the stage was set for a fiery, exciting concert, and that’s exactly what they delivered.’

Finnish prog rock trio Von Hertzen Brothers release their brand new studio album In Murmuration through their own their DoingBeingMusic label this Friday, October 25.

To celebrate the band have shared a video for their latest single, The Relapse, which features a boisterous saxophone solo from Markus Pajakkala, who features on several songs on the new album.”When we began thinking about the overall approach for this album, we wanted to write songs that were simple in structure (for a change), punchy in performance, and rocky enough to have fun with on stage,” says Kie Von Hertzen about the new single. “The Relapse was the first song to come from that mindset. To us, it’s a mix of AC/DC, Queens of the Stone Age, Phil Collins, and maybe a bit of U2. All of this is of course served to you with familiar Von Hertzen-ian seasoning and a bit of Krautrock sprinkled on top.”

“I’ve been waiting to get this song out so badly it has hurt. It’s so much fun to dive back into the pool of riff rock and just let it all out,” adds brother Mikko. “Don’t get me wrong, the proggier VHB is essentially THE driving force behind everything we do, but to have a new banger like this to play live feels fresh and fun. I wanna see those hands up in the air!”
