This record-breaking 1981 greatest hits package from Queen has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, ranking it among the most successful albums in music history. It has also become the biggest selling album of all time in the UK with sales exceeding six million copies, now owned by an estimated one in three families. While the song selection varied from country to country upon initial release, this version corresponds to the original 17 track British edition.

They may not have started out that way, but by 1981 Queen definitely was perceived as a singles act. This record gathers their biggest US/UK hits, 1973-1981, including the collaboration with David Bowie, “Under Pressure,” which was not on the reissue from EMI. Not to be confused with the 1992 Hollywood Records (61625) release also called Greatest Hits. ~~AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

Queen’s meteoric ascendancy during the 1970s has been well documented. From their gloriously ambitious self-titled debut album of 1973 through to the album that put them in the superstar bracket, 1975’s A Night At The Opera, and beyond, this unique group carved out a singular path as the most visionary, inventive and charismatic band of that epic decade.

But there is another side to Queen’s rise that has been largely overlooked. Between February 1973 and October 1977, the band recorded six radio sessions exclusively for the BBC. The twenty four recordings these landmark sessions produced include alternate versions of the debut single, unique takes of classic album tracks and even a radically reworked reimagining of one of their best known anthems that has never previously appeared on any Queen studio release.

Now, for the very first time, all six Queen BBC sessions – meticulously restored by Queen engineer Kris Fredriksson and mastered by Grammy Award winner Adam Ayan – have been brought together on Queen On Air

Back in 1989 — or 1995, if you’re an American — Queen released a collection called At the Beeb, which featured two BBC sessions recorded in February and December, 1973. The 2016 compilation Queen on Air trumps this by adding a July 1973 session along with two sessions from 1974 and one from 1977, all adding up to the band’s complete appearances on the BBC. Comprehensiveness is a feather in the cap for Queen on Air for collectors, but the additional material reveals that Queen got better as they stuck around. Those early 1973 performances have a couple of classic songs — namely, two different versions of “Keep Yourself Alive,” and maybe “Great King Rat” — but these sound thin and tentative compared to the recordings from 1974 and 1977 on disc two, where the band feels bigger and bolder, recognizing the value in space. Queen can still wander into amorphous territory — “It’s Late” descends into echoing mush — but their muscle seems defined, as does their camp: by ending the set with “My Melancholy Blues,” there’s no question that Queen is arch, delivering each of their tunes with a wink. Such revelations are interesting, but the relatively limpness of Queen on Air does mean it’s an archival release designed only for fans. ~~ AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

One of Deodato’s career highlights, this 1982 release finds the wildly talented musician incorporating a more smooth pop sound. The slick and melodious album features a guest appearance by Kelly Baretto, whose R&B style and high octave vocals blends with ease. The album features the hit singles “Keep It In The Family,” “Keep On Movin’” and the title track.

Although he was not only heavily involved in producing funkers Kool & the Gang but was elsewhere employed far from his own jazz roots, fusionist Eumir Deodato was still taking the time to perfect his own smooth pop. Happy Hour, released in 1982, is a prime example of the sounds and styles he’d now fully adapted. Sweet and slick, Happy Hour hinges on the upbeat sounds of early-’80s pop, leaving his prior success with disco present but lurking in the background. With vocalist Kelly Barretto taking a turn across the lion’s share of the songs, she set the tone with her clear R&B style and, although it was “Happy Hour” that hit the pop charts, the opening “Keep on Movin’” was a far better example of her prowess. Nearly eight minutes long and built around a smoothly repetitious, delicious, classic Deodato groove, her octave-leaping vocals bound in and out of the mix with ease amid the synth and brass. Elsewhere, Deodato brought in the star power of guest Candi Staton on a barely lukewarm version of the Smokey Robinson classic “The Tears of a Clown,” which focused almost exclusively on an unending alto sax solo. On a happier note, both “Keep It in the Family” and “I Never Get Enough” wrapped up the set with a Motown vibe. But while Happy Hour is easy on the ears, with nice turns spattered throughout, there’s nothing overly remarkable about the set, nor is there anything to recommend it. Deodato was capable of much better, and it would have been nice to hear it. –Amy Hanson

Brazilian composer, arranger and pianist Eumir Deodato’s 1980 release, Night Cruiser, is a blend of disco, pop and jazz. The album is rooted with soulful melodies, smooth hooks and fluid horns. It showcases Deodato in fine form. A true highlight on this masterfully produced album is the magnificent collaboration with Kool & the Gang’s saxophonist Ronald Bell on the track “Uncle Funk.”

Eumir Deodato has long been hailed for his smooth jazz/fusion blend. And although he had moved closer to a disco-pop sensibility by the time of this release, at least some of the early, cohesive elements of his trademark sound remain. Night Cruiser is smooth, studied, and packed with those moments that scream disco-lite, pop nightmare, and ’70s television show soundtrack. But, as mediocre as some of these songs seem, bizarrely it’s hard not to at least tap a toe on “Skatin.” Where this album takes an interesting turn is at the opening of side two, as “Uncle Funk” finds Kool & the Gang’s saxophonist, Ronald Bell, guesting. Deodato and Kool & the Gang had formed a productive partnership for the Gang’s hit single “Ladies Night,” and here Bell returns the favor. “Uncle Funk” is a juicy blend of fusion and classic funk sax that puts the rest of the album to shame. Clocking in at over six minutes, the song is allowed to find a groove and follow it through. “Love Magic” and “Groovitation” try to follow on from there, but they fall short, proving that although Deodato was capable of turning in a set that was musically perfect and flawlessly arranged, he really couldn’t grasp the mastery of his early era output. ~~ AllMusic Review by Amy Hanson

Eumir Deodato de Almeida, also known as Eumir Deodato, is a Brazilian pianist, composer, record producer and arranger, primarily based in the jazz realm but who historically has been known for eclectic melding of big band and combo jazz with varied elements of rock/pop, R&B/funk, Brazilian/Latin, and symphonic or orchestral music.

Prior to Prelude, Eumir Deodato was primarily known, if at all, as a tasteful, lyrical, bossa nova-based sometime arranger for the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Frank Sinatra, Wes Montgomery, and others. Enter Creed Taylor, who gave Deodato a chance to step out on his own as a pianist/leader, doing a few tunes of his own plus a healthy quota of CTI-patented jazz interpretations of classical pieces by Richard Strauss (“Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)”), Debussy (“Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun”), and bowdlerized Borodin (“Baubles, Bangles and Beads”). Well, “2001” — a clever, up-tempo Latin-groove takeoff on the opening measures of Strauss’ tone poem suddenly exploded and became an improbable hit single. In its wake, Prelude soared to number three on the pop LP charts, and Deodato was propelled out of the arranger-for-hire business. Though overshadowed by “2001,” the other tracks also hold up well today, being mostly medium-tempo, sometimes lushly orchestrated, conga-accented affairs that provide velvety showcases for Deodato’s lyrical electric piano solos. The record also made a temporary star out of John Tropea, whose electric guitar has a lot of rock & rolling zip and fire, and Hubert Laws, Stanley Clarke, and Marvin Stamm each get a little solo room too. This would be the biggest hit Deodato and CTI ever had, and though short on playing time (32 minutes), it still makes enjoyable listening.

Jiri Belohlávek, Czech Philharmonic – Dvorak: Complete Symphonies & Concertos (2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Digital Booklet | 8.62 GB
Genre: Classical | Official Digital Download – Source: HDtracks

A new Dvorák symphony and concerto cycle from the multi-Gramophone-Award-winning conductor and the great Prague-based orchestra. It marks a triumphant return to the orchestra where he trained, the world leading and multi-Gramophone Award-winning maestro Jirí Bìlohlávek records Decca’s first Dvorák cycle since the 1960s. This complete symphonies and concertos set is a pinnacle of brilliant music-making, and the first major cycle to be recorded in high-definition 24bit 96kHz and Mastered for iTunes sound.

Dvorák himself conducted the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra’s first concert in 1896, and the shared Bohemian heritage of composer, conductor and orchestra lends a very special authenticity to these recordings.

Dvorák’s three concertos (violin, cello and piano) feature alongside his nine great Symphonies, with Decca’s leading cellist Alisa Weilerstein, Frank Peter Zimmermann (violin) and Garrick Ohlsson (piano). The Czech PO and Belohlávek will be undertaking major European tours in 2014, including a full Dvorák symphonic cycle in Prague in September. Rhombus Films have also made a fascinating documentary focusing on Belohlávek’s return to Prague as the Czech Philharmonic’s chief conductor.

Composer: Antonín Dvorák
Performer: Alisa Weilerstein, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Garrick Ohlsson
Conductor: Jiri Belohlávek
Orchestra/Ensemble: Czech Philharmonic Orchestra

Reviews:

First, a word of warning. 4 out of five of these discs play for over 80 minutes with the longest being nearly 84! Whilst this is fine on modern equipment there’s the chance that older CD players may reject them.

I have to say that I’ve had a fascinating couple of weeks re-acquainting myself with these wonderful works and I’m sure that this set will do what the Kertesz/LSO recordings did for them in the 60’s. As well as the ever popular seventh, eighth and ninth symphonies, the earlier works are well worth hearing especially in performances as good as these.

Belohlavek and the Czech Philharmonic play these works like no other musicians can. (The Czech Phil. Library still have the orchestral parts that were used for Dvorak!) Rhythms are beautifully pointed, the melodic phrasing is so affectionate and the sheer virtuosity of the players is a thing to behold.

The first three symphonies are probably never going to be heard in concert that often and there is no doubt that they do sprawl a bit showing that Dvorak was finding his feet when it came to writing symphonies. They contain lovely melodies and ideas and are well worth hearing so, if you don’t know these pieces, these are wonderful introductions.

The ‘in between’ works are well served here and if the spirit of Wagner and Brahms linger then it goes to show that a Dvorak was taking inspiration from the masters. The fourth symphony has always been a favourite of mine and no performance I’ve heard on record has reached the heights of this one.

By the time Dvorak wrote his last three symphonies he had ditched the German symphonic model and had found his own feet and voice and these works need no advocacy from me! Again, these are terrific performances and crown this outstanding cycle.

As a bonus, the three concerti are added. They are all played with superb artistry by the soloists although I have to say that Alicia Weilerstein’s performance is simply, IMHO, the best recording of this work EVER and is my recording of the year so far!

Recommended with all enthusiasm.

Libertador, Gustavo Dudamel’s first soundtrack, and first composition to be released worldwide. Gustavo originally arrived to this project as musical advisor. Sometime later, Gustavo said he had come up with a melody that could work for the start of the film. He went to the piano and began playing the melody. When he finished playing, I think both of us realized that he had begun composing our soundtrack. Dudamel, who consulted with filmscore master John Williams in the preparations for this assignment, describes his soundtrack as atmospheric, post-Mahlerian music, full of tension, hope and struggle. The Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and guests from the world of Venezuelan folk music lend the score a distinctive and irresistible Latin American flavor.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Chamber Orchestra of Europe – Schumann: The Symphonies (2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Digital Booklet | 2.04 GB
Genre: Classical | Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz

For these revelatory performances – captured live at acclaimed concerts in Paris – he conducts the superb Chamber Orchestra of Europe, one of the world’s preeminent chamber orchestras. Taking a fresh perspective on familiar music, Yannick Nézet-Séguin challenges the conventional view on the composer’s symphonies.

“Of all the major symphonies, I’d say that Schumann’s are best performed by a slightly smaller ensemble… With a lean string section – not only in size, but also in its quality of playing – the music just works.”

The Canadian Maestro sees Schumann’s music as rooted in the bipolar nature of the composer’s troubled psyche, emphasising dramatic shifts of temperament – not only between movements but even within a single phrase

“He’s one of those composers whose personality is completely expressed in their music…those fluctuations between the melancholy and something very inward-looking are combined with a very manic kind of energy that wants to conquer the world. That’s what is so special about Schumann.”

This new cycle includes the second, revised version of Schumann’s second symphony, published as his Symphony No.4. “I try to respect whenever a composer makes a revision because he feels the need to, rather than because of any outside pressure. I’m personally convinced that the symphony’s message, and this feeling of one big movement, is better conveyed by the later version.”

This set is Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first recording of a complete symphony cycle.

Composer: Robert Schumann
Conductor: Yannick Nézet-Séguin
Orchestra/Ensemble: Chamber Orchestra of Europe

Reviews:

Deutsche Grammophon touts Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s new fast-and-light-textured Schumann symphony cycle as “revelatory”, but there are already several recordings (Harnoncourt, Dausgaard, Zinman, Norrington, to name a few) that take a similar approach. As you would expect, Nézet-Séguin whips a good deal of energy with his swift tempos and crisp phrasing, and his readings are notable for their timbral clarity, exposing lots of interesting inner detail, especially on the woodwinds (the COE brass, which needs no such help, sounds quite fine throughout).

But there’s more to Schumann than speed and clarity, and given that Nézet-Séguin began his career as a pianist, it’s surprising that he’s not especially sensitive to the music’s rubato and implied poetry. Bernstein, in comparison, plays these symphonies like piano music, employing a naturally-breathed ebb-and-flow (while conducting big-bands like the New York and Vienna Philharmonics).

Then there’s the frustratingly narrow dynamic range of the performances, partially the fault of the close-perspective recording, but also likely due to Nézet-Séguin’s need to balance the smallish string body with the other instrumental groups. This is not so much a problem in the bright and sunny Symphony No. 1 (the best performance in the set), and the more traditionally classical No. 2 (also pretty good, with well-sustained tension); but this method saps power and impact from No. 4, Schumann’s most emotionally-charged.

The conductor’s swift pacing and clear textures make No. 3’s (“Rhenish”) first movement sound a little less rambling than usual, and his deft handling of timbres makes the sombre fourth movement quite interesting. However, the sexless, so-called historically-informed string texture and articulation hinders rather than helps Schumann’s expressive intent, fostering an overall generalized quality that gives the sense that the performance is about Nézet-Séguin adhering to an aesthetic principle over everything else.

Likely, someone who’s never heard Schumann performed this way will find some aspects of this recording refreshing and enjoyable–at least initially. But in the long-run they’ll be better served, if this is the desired approach, by Zinman’s complete set which also offers swift, bracing tempos, but also retains the music’s tonal richness, subtlety, and emotional energy. All others should consider the reference recordings listed.

Recorded: Audible Images in Pittsburgh, PA and Shine Studios in London, England.

Awakening is the “America’s Got Talent” child prodigy, Jackie Evancho’s second studio album. The young soprano takes on twelve tracks that range from “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera to works by Rachmaninoff. The record is a cross over of classical covers to contemporary works, including U2’s “With or Without You” and Lara Fabians “Je t’aime”.

Fourteen-year-old vocal sensation Jackie Evancho’s new album, Awakening, signals some new directions for the platinum-selling artist. Without foregoing the beautiful and lush classical-crossover compositions for which Evancho has became famous, she also extends her stylistic reach with contemporary material on songs such as the haunting folk song “The Rains of Castamere” from HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones.” Jackie also takes a bigger step forward on her version of U2’s “With or Without You,” and also sings a few original songs including the anthem “Take Me There” and “Open Fields of Grace,” which were written especially for her. Produced by Nick Patrick, “Awakening” also features the ethereal ballad “Memories” by the Dutch band, Within Temptation, and the popular classic “Think of Me” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. Rounding out the album are the classical standards “Ave Maria” and Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise.” Says Evancho about Awakening, “I feel that my singing style has matured, and it’s easier for me to feel comfortable onstage.” Jackie will be filming a new PBS pledge special that will air nationally in December and will be touring throughout the U.S. starting in November 2014.

Jackie Evancho dazzled American television audiences at age ten gaining global recognition with her stunning debut on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” Since then, she has released a string of successful albums, acted in Robert Redford’s “The Company You Keep” alongside Susan Sarandon and performed for President and Mrs. Obama at the National Christmas Tree Lighting in Washington D.C. Earlier this year, Jackie performed at the PBS Memorial Day Concert and also at the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Throughout the summer Jackie is doing a special promotion with tween clothing store Justice. She will be featured in their summer catalogue and the video for an exclusive song she recorded for the chain, “Go Time,” will be featured on their web site and on screens in all 900 Justice stores nationwide.

Ryuichi Sakamoto is a Japanese musician, composer, arranger, record producer, writer, singer, pianist, actor, and activist, based in Tokyo and New York. He began his career in the 1970s, first gaining major success in 1978 as a member of electronic music group Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). He concurrently pursued a solo career, releasing the experimental electronic fusion album Thousand Knives. The album is named after Henri Michaux’s description of the feel of using mescaline in Misérable Miracle. It was recorded in about 500 hours, and Sakamoto would spend whole days without sleeping working on it.

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s first solo album appeared before he formed Yellow Magic Orchestra in late 1978, after the young keyboardist had earned his M.A. in music from Tokyo University. Six long instrumentals make up this CD, but apart from a taste for Asian-sounding synth lines, they hint at very little of what was to come in YMO. “Thousand Knives” is a long disco-lite jazzy workout with a very un-synthesized guitar solo by Kazumi Watanabe (who would later join YMO on tour and have his solo album produced by Sakamoto). Side two’s “Da Neue Japanische Electronische Volkslied” and “The End of Asia” (later revamped in YMO) are closest to the new wave of Japanese electronic music that he would spawn. “Island of Woods” and “Grasshoppers” trade in rhythm for sound landscapes, and the sort of cheeriness that would pop up later in Sakamoto’s childrens movie scores. Harry Hosono turns up on one track, and generally the album is a pleasant, if unadventurous, listen.

The Brandenburg Concertos need no introduction – doubtless because they owe their fame to a systematic exploration of a genre recently inherited from the Italians, with a still youthful Bach devising as many different scorings as there are concertos. When he received the manuscript of the six works, Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg, must have been terrified by their demands, and his musicians even more so! Three centuries later, the cycle is as open as ever to new ‘historically informed’ interpretations, as this set demonstrates. The CD cover represents the importance of numbers in these works eg Concerto No 3 which is scored for three instruments, in 3 time, 3 sections etc. The trumpeter is particularly impressive. Freiburg are recording and touring Bach throughout 2014.

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Orchestra/Ensemble: Freiburg Baroque Orchestra

Reviews:

“I warmed immediately to the Freiburgers’ engagement with the music’s breadth and scale, refusing to squash it in a breathless blaze of “period” mannerisms…you feel the zing of jubilant repartee as multi-layered lines are traded and interwoven within this conductor-less ensemble. That’s authenticity.”

“an uncanny sense of corporate cohesion…yields luxuriant textures, polished ensemble and meticulously plotted conceptions, born of single-mindedness and an embedded familiarity with their colleagues and the material.”

Bach’s suites and concertos have long been part of concert repertoires. It is however interesting to mentally replace their first executions in the context of the time, so different from what we see on present day stages. Apart from at the courts, whatever their size, there were no permanent orchestras in Bach’s time and age. Café Zimmermann has brilliantly recreated the spirit of these orchestras, allowing each musician (chosen among the best on the European baroque scene) to express himself.

The ensemble Café Zimmermann, lead by violinist Pablo Valetti, is one of the new breed of Baroque groups offering lean, high-energy performances on historical instruments. The name refers to a Leipzig coffeehouse where Bach’s Collegium Musicum instrumental ensemble might have performed in the 18th century. Imagined in that setting, the one-instrument-per-part performance here is plausible, although evidence that such performances occurred in Bach’s time does not indicate that such performances were desirable. Bach himself requested an orchestra of 24 players from the Leipzig city council, and a piece like the Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, echoes French ensembles of that size. For those down with the small-group approach, this release offers a very high level of musicianship and some fresh readings from Valetti. Tempos are quick, with the suite’s famous Air on a G string taken at an unusually brisk clip, but the textures remain unusually transparent, and the overall feel is lively and clear. The Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, BWV 1063, the most troublesome of the set of six with its unusual double-viola scoring, gets a rich, complex reading. Another attraction comes from the Alpha label’s practice of pairing musical works with detailed art-historical essays on a painting of the period; the work by Antwerp artist Peter Jacob Horemans, though only tangentially related to Bach, is full of fascinating details such as a cup of coffee or tea being dumped into a bowl, perhaps to be given to one of the four dogs appearing in the painting. As always, buyers of Alpha’s series can give themselves a decent grounding in art history at no additional cost. Notes are in French and English.
