Neil Young – Prairie Wind (2005/2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 52:11 minutes | 1,07 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Reprise

Since Prairie Wind is a return to the soft, lush country-rock sound of Harvest; since Neil Young suffered a brain aneurysm during its recording; since it finds the singer/songwriter reflecting on life and family in the wake of his father’s death; and since it’s his most cohesive album in a decade, it would seem that all these factors add up to a latter-day masterpiece for Young, but that’s not quite the case. Prairie Wind manages to be less than the sum of its parts and the problem isn’t a lack of good songs (although it does have a few more clunkers than it should) or a botched concept. Young’s decision to revive the country-rock that brought him his greatest popularity never feels like a cynical move — the music is too warm, comfortable, and friendly to feel like anything but Neil playing to his strengths. However, since he cut this in Nashville with a bunch of studio pros including legendary keyboardist Spooner Oldham, it feels just a tad slicker than perhaps it should, since the smooth sound inadvertently highlights the sentimentality of the project. It’s hard to begrudge Young if he wants to indulge in rose-colored memories — a brush with death coupled with a loss of a parent tends to bring out sentimentality — but such backward-gazing songs as “Far from Home” feel just a hair too close to trite, and the easy-rolling nature of the record doesn’t lend them much gravity. There a few other songs that tend toward too close to the simplistic, whether it’s the specific invocations of 9/11 and Chris Rock on “No Wonder” or the supremely silly Elvis salute “He Was the King,” which are just enough to undermine the flow of the album, even if they fit into the general autumnal, reflective mood of the record. But since they do fit the overall feel of the album, and since they’re better, even with their flaws, than the best songs on, say, Silver & Gold or Broken Arrow or Are You Passionate?, they help elevate the whole of Prairie Wind, particularly because there are some genuinely strong Young songs here: the moody opener “The Painter,” the gently sighing “Fallin’ off the Face of the Earth,” the ethereal “It’s a Dream,” the sweet, laid-back “Here for Your,” the understated “This Old Guitar” (there’s also the sweeping “When God Made Me,” recorded complete with a gospel chorus, one that will either strike a listener as moving or maudlin — a latter-day “A Man Needs a Maid,” only not as strong). This set of songs does indeed make Prairie Wind a better album than anything Young has released in the past decade, which means that it’s easy to overrate it. For despite all of its strengths, neither the recording nor the songs are as memorable or as fully realized as his late-’80s/early-’90s comeback records — Freedom, Ragged Glory, and Harvest Moon — let alone his classic ’70s work. Nevertheless, it’s the closest Young has come to making a record that could hold its own with those albums in well over a decade, which means it’s worthwhile even if it’s never quite as great as it seems like it could have been. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

New Masters – ReWORKS – Vol. 1 (2019)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 26:07 minutes | 526 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Masterworks

Sony Music Masterworks today introduces New Masters, a rotating ensemble of today’s leading, up-and-coming and established jazz musicians, as they take on today’s biggest charting-topping hits for a new genre-defying project entitled ReWORKS. Available everywhere now is ReWORKS – Vol. 1 lead offering, Juice WRLD’s breakthrough hit “Lucid Dreams,” as arranged by guitarist Gilad Hekselman. “Lucid Dreams” is the first track from ReWORKS – Vol. 1, which is set for release Friday, July 12 and will feature songs originally performed by Cardi B, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, SZA and more.

Of the track, guitarist Gilad Hekselman says: “It was definitely a challenge to take on ‘Lucid Dreams’ because it was a song that was completely off my radar (although I’m familiar with ‘Shape of My Heart,’ the Sting tune it’s based on). Only after recording it did I start noticing how many times this song would be playing out of cars or on the radio—it was a good opportunity to get out of my jazz bubble and connect to what’s popular these days. I tried to do something with it that respects the original, yet offers a platform for the band’s expression. Of course, I had no doubt that in the hands of these master musicians, no matter what I did or didn’t do with it, it’d turn into something beautiful, and it did.”

The newest project from Sony Music Masterworks – ReWORKS – embraces jazz in all of its crazy polarities. It features New Masters, a powerful all-star collective comprised of primarily new talent, formed as a fresh, creative reaction to the distinct challenges of an age when playlists and brands—more than albums and bands—are in prominence.

The first edition New Masters ensemble includes among its impressive lineup many of the leading, up-and-coming or established representatives of their respective instruments: pianist Sullivan Fortner, drummer Eric Harland, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, guitarist Gilad Hekselman, bassist Burniss Earl Travis and saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins. Adding his trademark spark and cohesion to the project as well is respected percussionist Bashiri Johnson. Matt Pierson, the veteran jazz producer who initiatedReWORKS, recruited these performers from among the top tier of today’s burgeoning jazz scene, improvisers both steeped in the jazz tradition and in tune with current musical trends. There was a level of familiarity as well: some had experience playing with each other, but there was the added spark of a few first-time encounters.

The group’s repertoire—true to the name ReWORKS—boldly focuses on songs drawn from the top of today’s pop charts, tunes with a melodic priority that are able to benefit from an improviser’s touch. The choices also serve as generational signifiers—present-day hits by familiar stars, as relevant to the youngest tier of listeners as they are pervasive among all who listen with open ears. To hear it from Pierson, the project is as much a product of that longstanding imperative in jazz as it is a product of the current age.

“Fifteen years ago I would have signed each of these guys, but that’s not possible today,” says Pierson, known for helming Warner Brothers’ forward-thinking jazz imprint in the ‘90s and into the new millennium. “The challenge the jazz and jazz-adjacent community currently faces is that our existing audience hasn’t embraced the streaming platforms, while those already utilizing the platforms aren’t being directed to jazz. The intent of the ReWORKS concept is to proactively bridge this gap, using a streaming mentality to creatively subvert how consumers find tracks online and work these newer, singular jazz artists into search results and playlists.”

Pierson adds: “Of course, for this particular effort to be effective long-term, the material needs to be familiar, leading with groove and melody, while remaining artistically uncompromising. I’m confident that these first six tracks achieve this goal, and give us a shot at expanding the audience for undeniably great, creative music and remaining true to the musicians who make it happen.”

On ReWORKS – Vol. 1, four out of six tunes were nominated for a Record of the Year Grammy® Award, and on average each has streamed more than one billion times. It’s a concept with much precedent; in fact one could say that jazz has repeatedly proven itself to be among the most wide-eared of styles in the general family of music, ever curious and attentive to the twists and trends that popular music – despite the prevailing notion that jazz is somehow anti-commercial.

In the 1920s and ‘30s, it took the songs created for Broadway and Hollywood that made it onto the Hit Parade of the day and turned them into timeless standards; in the ‘60s and through the ‘70s, it drew inspiration from the groove-fueled music of Motown and soul. Today, countless jazz musicians embrace broken-beat rhythms while drawing on other ideas and technologies borrowed from the world of hip-hop. This cross-pollination continues to be the way in which jazz grows anew, thriving through change and adaptation – which is precisely the strategy that gave birth to the groundbreaking ReWORKS project, and the all-star group – New Masters – with which to develop it.

Niña Pastori – Esencial Niña Pastori (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 02:08:08 minutes | 1,47 GB | Genre: Flamenco, Latin Pop
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Legacy Recordings

Niña Pastori is one of the more accomplished cantaoras among the generation of young pop-flamenco singers to emerge around the turn of the century. She was born María Rosa García García on January 15, 1978, in San Fernando, a city in the province of Cádiz, Spain, and her mother is a successful flamenco singer, La Pastori. She began her career at a young age, often traveling and performing with her mother hence her performing name, Niña Pastori, a reference to her relationship to her well-known mother. Niña made her recording debut in 1996 with Entre Dos Puertos, which was produced by Paco Ortega and Alejandro Sanz, the latter Spain’s best-selling artist ever. The album boasted a hit song, “Tú Me Camelas,” and exhibited a pop-flamenco style targeted chiefly at teenagers. As Pastori would continue to do on subsequent albums, she interpreted songs of others, including Ortega and Sanz themselves. Henceforth Pastori followed with a new album roughly every two years Eres Luz (1998), Cañailla (2000), María (2002), No Hay Quinto Malo (2005), Joyas Prestadas (2006) and her style of music would grow progressively more mature as she and her audience aged. She’s a regular recipient of Latin Grammy attention, with No Hay Quinto Malo winning a nomination in 2005 (Best Flamenco Album) and Joyas Prestadas in 2006 (Best Female Pop Vocal Album). In 2009, Pastori released her seventh album, Esperando Verte. Co-written entirely with her husband Chaboli, the album included the Top Five hit “Capricho de Mujer.” 2011 saw Pastori deliver La Orilla de Mi Pelo, a collection of songs that flirted with pop and rock more than any of her previous albums.

Nina Simone has penned unforgettable protest material, covered jazz, folk, rock, and pop with equal flair, and created a body of work that’s kept her popularity high. While this title is hardly accurate, since it only covers RCA material from 1967-1972, there’s plenty of anthemic fare among The Essential Nina Simone’s 16 selections. These include “Mr. Bojangles,” “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black,” “Seems I’m Never Tired Lovin’ You,” and “Since I Fell for You.” While the absence of “Baltimore,” “I Wish I Knew How It Feels to Be Free,” and “Here Comes the Sun” (to name only three) is sizable, and the weighting of this compilation toward well-known rock types (Bob Dylan, Randy Newman, Jimmy Webb, George Harrison, two Bee Gees cuts) debatable, there’s still no way it can be dismissed. ~ Ron Wynn

Madrid-based rock group Pereza (Laziness) were formed by bass player Leiva and guitarist Rubén Pozo in the late ’90s. Both Rubén and Leiva were experienced musicians at the time of Pereza’s formation, Rubén a former member of Buenos Noches Rose and Leiva formerly of Malahierba. The band hit the ground running, and early releases such as Patitos Feos and Calaveras y Diablitos established a strong grassroots fan base for the emerging rock innovators. Pereza attracted label attention shortly thereafter, recording a self-titled record for RCA in 2001. Their major-label debut was followed by exhaustive touring, playing better than 100 shows throughout Spain inside of a year. The group’s next release, Algo Para Cantar, would hit shelves in the middle of 2002, produced by Fernando Montesinos. The group’s third record, Animales, would catch the public’s attention; recorded in the winter months of 2004 in Madrid, the record was produced by Nigel Walter, an industry veteran with credits including Hombres G, El Canto del Loco, and La Oreja de Van Gogh, to name a few. The record was released in 2005 to an enthusiastic audience. On its heels came Los Amigos de los Animales, a record featuring collaborations with fellow rock en español trailblazers Deluxe, Los Delinquentes, Ivan Ferreiro, and Pastora, among others.

This is the second edition of my “Sounds of 3” recordings, the first one released, also on Losen Records, August 2016, with Norwegian Frode Alnœs on guitar and the Cuban drummer, Giraldo Piloto. On this second edition I am thrilled and proud with having the Swedish, guitarist extraordinary, Ulf Wakenius on and the English super star drummer, Gary Husband. These two gentlemen contributed in the greatest way possible with their extreme musical talents, their wonderful spirit, joy and world level performance. I am honoured to have had the chance to make this recording with these 2 super humans. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Ulf & Gary.

We perform 7 original compositions by the members of the trio, one pop classic by Sting and one ballade by guitar maestro, Mike Stern, which covers a wide range of musical dynamics: high voltage jazz-rock, chamber jazz impro, up tempo swing, ballad, blues and odd meter. The music is an array of different jazz styles / genres and explained in the best way possible with this quote from master pianist, Herbie Hancock: “It’s not exclusive, but inclusive, which is the whole spirit of jazz.”

Having assembled, for touring purposes, what would soon be his formal backing band, the Hundred Men, and more specifically, having found a new key songwriting collaborator in ex-B. Movie keyboardist Paul Statham, Murphy created his most elegant post-Bauhaus effort to date. Love Hysteria had definite Bowie echoes, though the feeling was more late-’70s Berlin-era than Ziggy glam. That said, with his band turning in a variety of bright, lively performances and with sympathetic production from ex-Fall member/arranger Simon Rogers, Murphy matched the music with flair, his voice even more of a passionate croon than a powerful howl. Lead single “All Night Long” was something of an American breakthrough hit; its upbeat rock drive and lush keyboards are a perfect bed for Murphy’s performance. Other moments, such as the ringing acoustic/electric guitar combinations on “Indigo Eyes” and “Dragnet Drag,” take Murphy even further away from Bauhaus’ shadow, though “His Circle and Hers Meet” and “Blind Sublime” have a brusquer energy. The definite highlights of the album are two majestic ballads: “Time Has Got Nothing to Do With It,” with a fine Statham synth line matching Murphy’s soaring vocals; and “My Last Two Weeks,” a simply wonderful romantic sentiment. If his lyrics now sometimes have the feeling of formal philosophical pronouncements, the sense of style with which he sings them saves the performances more often than not. Closing with a fun romp through Iggy Pop’s “Funtime,” saluting another one of Murphy’s old heroes with an appropriately strong vocal and amusing horror-movie samples, Love Hysteria shows Murphy fully coming into his own as a performer.

Following the collapse of Dali’s Car, Murphy embarked on a solo career in earnest, fortuitously hooking up with Howard Hughes, who had been working with fellow cult artists the Associates. With 4AD label head Ivo Watts-Russell drafted in to produce and guest musicians popping in as desired, Murphy and Hughes created a slightly fragmentary but still intriguing record. Caught between his recent past (the use of fretless bass on “Canvas Beauty” was a dead giveaway that he missed working with Mick Karn) and his eventual solo successes, Murphy concentrates here mostly on breaking free of the goth stereotype in which he had found himself trapped. His vocal passion isn’t diminished in the slightest, but this time the music over which he sings is generally lighter and freer in tone; he himself handles drum programming, core guitar parts, and keyboard lines while Hughes takes care of the rest. The quietly anthemic title track and “God Sends” stand out as thorough successes on these lines. Two covers also crop up, both worthy of note: A solid run-through of Magazine’s “The Light Pours Out of Me” with that band’s guitarist John McGeoch; more noteworthy is a fierce rip on Pere Ubu’s “Final Solution.” The ghosts of Bauhaus do crop up at points, most notably “Never Man,” with haunting backing vocals and a generally creepy feeling. Meanwhile, “The Answer Is Clear” has a more direct connection, with none other than Bauhaus guitarist Daniel Ash contributing some fine feedback squalls. Ironically enough, the song itself is a pointed response to Ash’s own recent Tones on Tail song “The Movement of Fear,” which Murphy took as an attack on himself!

It’s hard to believe that at this stage of the game, Petula Clark is turning out some of the best work of her recording career – but it’s true. The lady is in her mid-80’s now, and it seems her voice refuses to age. It’s truly amazing. Yes – the voice has changed… it’s a little lower, but still instantly recognizable… still that feminine beautiful sound… still able to bounce around a melody line with ease. Hats off to those that produced this album, as it comes off as a true labor of love. I feel like these people recognize & respect the talent that IS Petula Clark, and have produced something worthy of the lady. The arrangements are stunning – a bit of classic ’60’s rock going on, but with it we get awesome strings, with the arrangements taking us places we’re not expecting them to go. THIS is how I love to hear Petula. From what I understand, these songs were written for her, and she approaches the songs with total commitment. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this new CD. I do not speak (or understand) French – but it doesn’t matter. The mere sound of her voice on this recording is enough to take me on the journey with her. She hasn’t sounded this good in years – and it is a total joy to hear her like this.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 32:06 minutes | 330 MB | Genre: Electronic, Indie, Ambient
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front cover | © Houndstooth

Following her debut album ‘Penelope One’ for Optimo Music, antipodean vocalist, musician and soundscaper Penelope Trappes presents sophomore longplayer ‘Penelope Two’, for Houndstooth. Elements from multiple sources are subsumed by Trappes’ sonic presence; one hears Baldametti and Julee Criuse’s work for ‘Blue Velvet’ and Twin Peaks, Galazie 500 and Slowdive’s dreampop, the schorched comedowns of early Primal Scream, Tuxedomoon and Colin Newman’s dark melancholia, plus contemporaries like Grouper, Tropic Of Cancer and Sky H1. A deeply melodic, with her intimate, maternally-tender voice floating in the middle of each three dimensional, womb-like sonic space. Originally from Byron Bay Australia before moving to New York, meeting partner Stephen and developing experimental electronic projects Locke and Priscilla Sharp, prior to their best-know incarnation -The Golden Filter. Cut and mastered by Matt Colton and manufactured at optimal media, Germany.

2017 saw the release of the Golden Filter’s Penelope Trappes’ first solo effort, Penelope One, via Optimo Music. Here, esteemed London electronic label Houndstooth have put out her sophomore release. The record’s hypnotic and atmospheric soundscapes further cement the label’s mission statement to put out an eclectic array of unique and original electronic music. Much like its predecessor, the album is composed of swirling ambience and gorgeous, reverb-laden songs. Album-opener “Silence” delivers Trappes’ crooning vocal melodies amidst a cloud of ambience before giving way to lead single “Connector.” The latter features thudding, crunchy percussion with overdriven David Lynch-esque guitars while Trappes’ forlorn vocals ache through the rest of the mix before the latter half of the song delivers rich, warm synth pads carrying listeners out to the end. Another highlight is “Carry Me,” a sinister and powerful track made up of unwavering minor chords that bubble atop bluesy percussion, with creepy vocal harmonies carrying the track verse to verse. The follow-up “Maeve” recalls the angelic and warm vocal work of Julee Cruise, panning out among celestial and ethereal bursts of synthesized chords. Just like her first release, Penelope Two exemplifies Trappes’ ability to craft arresting and magnetic songs that feature minimal composition. She manages to say a lot while never overdoing things or cluttering up the mix. The album is another solid outing for this unique and talented musician. ~ Rob Wacey

Penny & Sparrow – Finch (2019)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/48 kHz | Time – 35:28 minutes | 404 MB | Genre: Indie Folk
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © I Love You

Beginning with 2013’s Tenboom, the staunchly DIY pair Penny & Sparrow released a series of critically lauded records that garnered comparisons to the hushed intimacy of Iron & Wine and the adventurous beauty of James Blake, building up a devoted fanbase along the way through relentless touring and word-of-mouth buzz. NPR praised the band s songwriting as a delicate dance between heartache and resolve, while The World Café raved that they’ve steadily built a sound as attentive to detail as Simon & Garfunkel and as open to the present day as Bon Iver. Penny & Sparrow s magnificent sixth album Finch is titled as a nod to Charles Darwin, who developed his theory of evolution in part by studying the changes that manifested over time in groups of birds that moved to different islands across the Galapagos, and it s easy to see the connection. The album finds the band reckoning with a prolonged period of intense personal transformation, a profound awakening that altered their perceptions of masculinity, sex, religion, divorce, friendship, vanity, purpose, and, perhaps most importantly, self. Deeply vulnerable and boldly cinematic, the resulting songs blur the lines between indie-folk and alt-pop, with dense string arrangements and atmospheric production underpinning soaring melodies and airtight harmonies. It’s a revelatory collection, both for the listener and the performers, one that s been a lifetime in the making.

Dreamy Texan indie folk duo Penny & Sparrow have been at it since 2011, diligently touring, recording, and adapting their earnest, electro-organic, Bon Iver-inspired approach over five full-length releases. Built around the simple palette of acoustic guitar and two voices singing in harmony, members Kyle Jahnke and Andy Baxter have flirted with the CCM scene, made lush semi-orchestral overtures, recorded a Christmas album, and gone lo-fi with a self-recorded living room album. They’ve squeezed a lot of work into their eight years together and on 2019’s Finch, their sixth album, the two friends continue their evolution both as people and artists. Somewhat of a grab bag of previously explored and as-yet-untested Penny & Sparrow styles, Finch sees the duo carrying on with the partly stripped-down feel from 2017’s Wendigo, with detours into rich string-laden balladry, nods to their own spirituality, a bit of indie pop soul, and plenty more of their still-earnest harmonic rafter-raising. Co-produced with Chris Jacobie in San Antonio, Finch’s arrangements favor Jahnke’s and Baxter’s inherent sense of drama, with thick layers of reverb painting the mostly organic instrumentation as the two singers dip and swell with practiced finesse. The lovelorn stomp-and-clap feel of “Eloise” plays to the duo’s strengths in a rousing crescendo of soulful falsettos, while the springy folk-pop of “Don’t Wanna Be Without Ya” takes their romantic nature in a more up-tempo direction. With its gentle strumming, light synth burbles, and woozy strings, “Cult Classically” is a mid-album standout and another vehicle for those effortless harmonies Penny & Sparrow seem to handle so well. A few songs later, the breezy “Recuerda” swoons affectionately amid eerie swirling synths and quavering electric guitars. For all of their ambitions, though, the ghost of Bon Iver’s sensuous cabin pop still looms rather large in Penny & Sparrow’s aesthetic, and their own personalities have to work double time to rise above the contemporary soft pop parameters in which they’ve chosen to work. They do succeed in places, especially on the two aforementioned cuts, though it would be interesting to hear them take a few legitimate left turns here and there. ~ Timothy Monger
