While violinist Jenny Scheinman has been a longtime contributor to drummer Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom band, Parlour Game marks the first co-billed outing between the two veteran players and bandleaders. The quartet featured here, which also includes pianist Carmen Staaf and bassist Tony Scherr, is a nimble troupe whose sparkling folk-jazz interplay and deep musical vocabulary make for an immediately pleasing listen. From the start, the band’s chemistry is apparent with concise arrangements that still retain a breezy, casual air. The bulk of Parlour Game’s compositions are credited to Scheinman, with two originating from Miller and the entrancing mid-album standout, “Michigan,” credited to both. The overall impression, however, is that of a collective gelling of minds and aesthetics. As a melodicist, Scheinman is in her element, dancing and weaving through earthy tones and lithe runs as Staaf paints the landscape, weaving her own powerful spells. With Miller and Scheer driving the bottom end, there is a nice mix of rhythmic variance, from the rigorous skittering of the city-flavored “116th & Congress” to the pensive pop bounce of “The Right Fit” and the robust complicated patterns of “Top Shelf.” The band languorously stretches out on a pair of dreamy delicate ballads in “Lead with Love” and “Sleep Rider,” turning the acreage of space between notes into a silent fifth member. At their most engaging, the quartet dazzles with more up-tempo pieces like “Play Money” and “Miss Battle’s Cannonball,” two playful cuts that show off all their combined assets: intricate but approachable melodies, effortless chops, and a shared communal language that promotes a sense of relaxed, joyful creativity. ~ Timothy Monger

The past few years have found saxophonist/composer Jeremy Udden stepping away from his more fleshed out ensemble projects to focus on music with a more stripped down, direct approach. This led him to working up solo concerts, which, in turn led him back to one of his main influences, the great saxophonist and musical conceptualist Steve Lacy.

The loose and instinctive playing of Lacy has long been a draw for Udden. Udden even studied with the master improviser when Lacy was teaching at the New England Conservatory. After Lacy passed in 2004, Udden performed at a memorial concert that was held in New York City, along with a number of Lacy’s friends and collaborators, including the drummer John Betsch.

Over the past few years, Udden also began a collaboration with Paris based bassist Nicolas Moreaux, with whom he recorded Belleville Project, which was released in 2015. The two continued to interact and consider new projects. As it turns out, the American born Betsch called Paris home for decades and Moreaux had been performing with him on occasion. The idea of incorporating Betsch into a trio project began to coalesce and would eventually culminate in their new recording, Three In Paris.

Betsch has long been a favorite in the world of avant-garde jazz, being the engine behind ensembles led by musicians as diverse as Abdullah Ibrahim, Benny Golson, Dewey Redman, Archie Shepp, Mal Waldron and Henry Threadgill. The drummer had a two-decade affiliation with Lacy, being featured on many of Lacy’s fascinating albums. This led to a deep understanding of the saxophonist’s unique approach to improvisation.

After reconnecting with Udden, Betsch was thrilled to take part in the new project. When Udden flew to Paris with his wife and young daughter in August 2018, he brought thirty pieces to rehearse, including originals and compositions by Steve Lacy. Though aware of the potential emotional and artistic weight of performing material by Lacy with Betsch, Udden’s apprehension proved to be unfounded as Betsch was humble and incredibly supportive. Their single rehearsal was spent finding which tunes worked best and which direction they should take them.

The recording begins with an open take on Don Cherry’s tribute to the Jamaican saxophonist, Roland Alphonso. Regularly played in sessions when Udden was younger, “Roland Alphonso” keeps an offbeat ska rhythm while Betsch sculpts the performance under Udden’s sax. The obscure Moross and Latouche standard “Lazy Afternoon” is a hypnotic, mainly modal piece allowing the players to take their time, filling the space or leaving it open. Udden plays Lacy’s lyrical “Who Needs It?” in a duet with Betsch, the pretty tune leading to a free improvisation.

Udden’s “Hope” has a buoyant melody played breezily over a tempo free rubato, while Ellington’s “Azure” (a regular in the book of Lacy and Mal Waldron) is a bright and groovingly Sun Ra-esque, a throwback to the kinds of pieces Udden played while in the Either/Orchestra. Lacy’s dirge-like “Prayer” channels its composer as the piece seems to play itself, the sax and bass fitting together beautifully while Betsch shapes the piece to perfection.

Udden and Betsch are in and out of time on Lacy’s playful “The Crust,” while Lacy’s “Bone” is wildly spontaneous, the swing even eliciting Betsch’s impromptu vocals at the end. The wistful “Folk Song 2” is one of Udden’s simple, singable songs that seems to provide space to let the moment sit. The program concludes with the freely improvised “One for Us,” a palette cleanser that showcases the wonderful interplay the group was able to develop over two days of playing.

The influence of Steve Lacy’s monumental works has been instrumental in Jeremy Udden’s musical development. It was a fantastic coincidence that as he began to explore a more unadorned method of music making that Udden was able to reconnect with Lacy alum John Betsch through Nicolas Moreaux, which led to the creation of their unassuming yet poignant recording, Three In Paris.

Jerry Vale’s beautiful high-tenor voice graced many of the most enchanting pop songs of the ’50s and ’60s, including a parade of Italian-American favorites like “Innamorata (Sweetheart),” “Volare,” “Amore, Scusami,” and his signature song, “Al Di La.” Vale, born Genaro Louis Vitaliano in 1932, learned the Italian repertoire from an early age; his mother often sang around the house and trotted out the old songs at extended-family gatherings. While shining shoes at a local barber shop at the age of 11, young Vitaliano began singing popular songs for customers while he worked. He was soon sent to a vocal coach, where he learned piano as well as voice. Over the course of just four years, he’d progressed from school productions to paying gigs to residencies at supper clubs around New York City.

I Have But One Heart After Guy Mitchell caught his set at one club, Jerry Vale began recording demonstration discs for Columbia. When A&R supremo Mitch Miller heard his excellent voice, however, he signed Vale to his own contract. Vale first hit the charts in 1953 with “You Can Never Give Me Back My Heart” (arranged by Percy Faith), and continued during the mid-’50s with “Two Purple Shadows,” “I Live Each Day,” and his biggest hit, “You Don’t Know Me.” Though his first explicitly Italian recording, “Innamorata (Sweetheart),” finally appeared in 1956, it wasn’t until 1962 that Vale convinced the notoriously conservative Miller to record a full album of Italian songs. I Have But One Heart proved a big seller and was followed one year later by Arrivederci, Roma and a continental LP, The Language of Love, both of which placed even higher than the first on the album charts.

There Goes My Heart Though the mid-’60s were a trying time for traditional pop singers, Vale continued to be successful, with singles like “Have You Looked Into Your Heart” and “For Mama,” and Top 40 LPs like There Goes My Heart and It’s Magic. And even after his albums began failing to make the charts in the early ’70s, Vale remained a popular name in clubs and on television throughout the ’70s and ’80s.

Detroit born/LA based, prolific singer/songwriter Jesse Palter releases full-length, debut album ‘Paper Trail’, featuring ten tracks of aggressive, piano-pounding pop/rock in the soulful vein of Carole King, Sarah McLachlan and Sara Bareilles.

All of the songs on ‘Paper Trail’ were written by Palter, a multi-instrumentalist, and are autobiographical, capturing an intimate snapshot of her life. She focused on strengthening her creative muscles to explore what melodies, lyrics and chord changes worked best, allowing herself to be vulnerable, brave and brutally honest.

Palter, who has been in the entertainment industry her entire life, began working with GRAMMY®-winning production team the Bass Brothers (Eminem) at age 15. She honed her skill and passion for improvisational singing throughout Detroit with music greats such as Christian McBride, Geoffrey Keezer, Sean Jones, Marcus Belgrave and Avishai Cohen, and later headlined top venues across the country.

Jesse’s move from jazz to pop was seamless, with her eclectic musical upbringing and deep respect and admiration for great songs and songwriters.

Singer/songwriter Jessica Heine threads gossamer cords between all she has lost, finding regrowth, born in the aftermath.

Singer/songwriter Jessica Heine’s dynamic voice shakes rooms. Yet on her third album, ”Goodbye Party”, her power is tampered by loss. With new fragility, she opens up about her personal grief, threading gossamer cords between her painful divorce, the untimely death of her nephew, the loss of her grandmother and the regrowth born in the aftermath of these losses.

Amongst the songs, dreams are celebrated and mourned. Dreams of the future float away and new dreams surface in their place.

Her own guitar work is primarily supported by a full band consisting of piano, mandolin, bass and drums and on the title track, ”Goodbye Party,” textured backing vocals offer a hand to their sinking friend.

Heine’s voice may not quake the room in ”Goodbye Party,” but she harnesses powers that shake the soul much deeper. You’re left seeing the buds of new life poking through the ashes scattered on the ground, knowing that they, like these songs, will bloom beautifully.

“Duke Ellington recognized Jimmy Hamilton as both a talented clarinetist and composer and featured him extensively during his quarter century in the band. Swing Low Sweet Clarinet, a 1960 session for Everest, features the clarinetist leading a small group drawn primarily from Ellington’s band, including tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves, Booty Wood and Britt Woodman (heard on baritone horns instead of their usual trombones), bassist Aaron Bell, and drummer Sam Woodyard, while adding non-Ellington musicians Jimmy Rowles on piano, Dave Wells on baritone horn, and John Anderson on trumpet. It’s not surprising that Hamilton draws from Ellington’s vast repertoire, covering “Do Nothing ‘Till You Hear From Me,” “In a Sentimental Mood,” and the lesser-known ballad “I Didn’t Know About You” but with fresh approaches, especially with his use of the three baritone horns to add warm backgrounds. Hamilton’s off-center approach to the old chestnut “Ain’t She Sweet” is anything but ordinary. His originals include the exotic “Tempo de Brazilia” and “Taj Mahal.” The primary focus is on the leader in these brief arrangements, who delivers consistent lyrical and swinging solos, though there is plenty of solo space for Gonsalves, who obviously knows how to complement his longtime section mate in the Ellington orchestra. Long out of print!” (Ken Dryden, AMG)

In addition to her solo career, Michaels has also written some of the biggest pop hits of the last few years — pretty much every single off Justin Bieber‘s Purpose and the best of Shawn Mendes and Selena Gomez‘s recent releases. Inner Monologue: Part 1 featured collaborations with Gomez and Niall Horan, and although the official track list hasn’t been shared yet, Part 2 is probably just as iconic.

Brad Paisley- This Is Country Music is led by the hit single and title track, “This Is Country Music,” which exploded on the country radio charts. The album includes special guest appearances on songs like “Old Alabama (Featuring Alabama)” and “Remind Me (Duet With Carrie Underwood).” Paisley has 18 #1 singles to his name with album sales of more than 12 million. Paisley is also a three-time Grammy winner, a four-time ACM Top Male Vocalist, and is once again nominated for the ACM Awards Top Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year.

Consciously backpedaling from the all-encompassing embrace of American Saturday Night, Brad Paisley narrows his definition of what constitutes modern country on his seventh collection of new songs, This Is Country Music. Gone are the casual multiculturalism, the allusions to the age of Obama, the subtle instrumental flourishes that suggested a world outside of country; whenever Paisley chooses to broaden the horizons on This Is Country Music, he brings in Don Henley to duet on a power ballad or kicks up the reverb for a bit of landbound surf-rock. From the album title right on down to a rousing tribute to “Old Alabama” — a tribute so clever it seamlessly references a handful of the band’s ’80s hits, its chorus playfully inverting “Mountain Music,” then enlists the group to sing the punch line — Paisley celebrates the strict confines of country, gently bending its topical borders but adhering to country customs so strictly he even convinces Clint Eastwood to whistle a Morricone melody on a spaghetti Western instrumental tribute to the actor. Here’s where Paisley’s skills as a craftsman come into play. Always a traditionalist — the kind who saluted the Grand Ol Opry by regularly having Bill Anderson and Little Jimmy Dickens come out to do some cornpone humor on his albums — he builds a song with care but is keenly aware that he’s living in 2011, not 1965. Even when he’s determined to rein in his ambition, his music is rich and surprising. His silly novelties (“Camouflage” and “Be the Lake”) are underpinned by a sly sense of humor not readily apparent on their hammy choruses; he has an eye for details, whether it’s how a relationship builds (“Toothbrush”) or how a soul erodes in this modern world (“A Man Don’t Have to Die”); he opens the album by singing “You’re not supposed to say the word cancer in a song,” then breaks that very rule a few songs later; his twanging Telecaster may echo back to Don Rich, but is equally indebted to the shredders of the ‘80s. Paisley’s determination to keep This Is Country Music lean and lanky does mean it’s not as wily as his other records, but his consummate skill as a musician and big heart are always evident, always keeping things compelling. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Bruno Walter recorded the Eighth in southern California in 1962, at the end of a glorious career in the opera pit, on the podium, and in the studio. A finer valedictory could scarcely have been possible. This sunny, ebullient account is full of real grazioso phrasing and has a wonderful lightness of touch, yet shows plenty of muscle from a man who was 85 at the time he conducted it. The playing of the Columbia Symphony is inspired, and the recording, now more than 50 years old, remains exemplary for its balance and extraordinarily good sonics.

“A lovely recording, yet another reminder of the magnificent Indian summer in which Bruno Walter came out of his retirement in California to make stereo recordings of some of his favorite pieces for the last time. The orchestra consisted of the best of Hollywood’s studio musicians, and by all accounts they loved working with the old man–and he with them. You can certainly tell.” (David Hurwitz)

At the birth of his solo career Bryan Ferry released two records, ‘These Foolish Things’ and ‘Another Time, Another Place’ in 1973 and 1974 respectively – but had never performed them live. The setlist from ‘Live at the Royal Albert Hall 1974’ is built from these two albums and is a marked departure from the music he was performing with Roxy Music in the years previous. The tracklist consists of fan favourites including ‘A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall’, ‘The ‘In’ Crowd’, ‘Smoke Gets in Your Eyes’, and ‘I Love How You Love Me’ and spans his influences from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, including the records that shaped him growing up and throughout his formative years.

Only a year after the release of the first Roxy Music album, Bryan Ferry also put out his first record. A frenzy of material which allowed the British dandy to satisfy his passion for performance, plain and simple. On These Foolish Things (1973), the leader of Roxy Music covers Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones, The Beach Boys, The Four Tops and Elvis, whereas Another Time, Another Place (1974) sees him revisiting Dylan but also Sam Cooke, Ike Turner, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Joe South and a few gems from some 60s girl groups. Unpublished until now, this live recording from the Royal Albert Hall in London in December 1974 is essentially made up of these two solo albums. Irony, mismatch and the exuberance of the glam philosophy shine out during every second of this grandiose and bombastic concert which sees three members of Roxy Music join him on stage: the guitarist Phil Manzanera (insane!), drummer Paul Thompson and bassist John Porter. With a smoking jacket, flares, and long hair, Bryan Ferry delivers a performance as decadent as they come, kicking tradition to the kerb. Champagne, bubble bath and rock’n’roll! – Marc Zisman

A previously unreleased treasure. This is the final ever recording of the legendary, influential drummer, whose impact across rock, funk and soul, as well as jazz, is unrivalled to this day. Recorded over 2 nights, 19th & 20th November 1986, at Ronnie Scott’s in London, England. Includes full liner notes by Buddy’s daughter Cath, who also appears as a guest vocalist on the recording.

“My dad chose set lists for the two nights that I hadn’t heard before. He was always brilliant in choosing the right sets, but this time he shied away from the tried and true and went to places musically that were very different. It was as if he knew that he didn’t have to prove anything anymore and could relax and go wherever he wanted and enjoy it. I think the end result proves just that. For two incredible nights I got to sit in the audience and cheer right along with everyone else. I will always remember that time as one of the greatest moments in my life. Now I can revel in the fact that, thankfully, his last recordings were caught on tape for all of us to enjoy forever. It has taken thirty-three years to finally get these recordings out. An absolute labor of love that I never gave up on. At times it was quite a struggle, but in the end it was all about the music.”

Richard Strauss’ Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme suite was one of his own favourite scores, an absolute jewel of incidental music that combines the composer’s romanticism with his love of the Baroque music of Jean-Baptiste Lully. D. Wilson Ochoa has created a new symphonic orchestral suite from Strauss’ opulent Ariadne auf Naxos, enabling the orchestra to revel in music of extreme beauty and sensuous luxury, studded with gorgeous instrumental solos and the composer’s incomparable blend of poignancy, humour and melodic richness.

Far from being an actual “best of,” The Very Best of Lightin’ Hopkins comes off as being a largely nonessential purchase many classic songs are absent and there’s a lack of detailed liner notes to even denote which period the tracks are taken from. That’s not to say the material selected isn’t consistently engaging, with tunes like “Trouble in Mind,” “Shaggy Dad,” and the classic “See See Rider” being standouts among the 16 tracks. Contributions from Luke “Long Gone” Miles, Big Joe Williams, Brownie McGhee, and Sonny Terry highlight the collection as well. Most of the tracks, though, sound like alternate takes from other Hopkins sessions and some of the live tracks included are far from essential. Overall, there are bound to be better compilations on the market for similar prices.
