In addition to its exalted position in history as birthplace of our nation and of the cheesesteak sandwich, Philadelphia is famous as home to some of the toughest-to-please audiences in the world. This is, after all, the place where Santa Claus was booed and pelted with snowballs at an Eagles game. But if Philly fans are no pushovers, once you’ve won them over, they’re yours for life. That was certainly the case with the Grateful Dead who felt that brotherly (and sisterly) love in their many visits to the city from the late 60s on, most frequently at The Spectrum, the arena that played host to the Dead some 53 times between 1968 and 1995. Sadly, the Spectrum had long since closed and been reduced to rubble by the time Dead & Company got up and running, replaced just across the Sports Complex parking lot by the larger and more modern Wells Fargo Center, but the enthusiasm of Philly Dead Heads for this music made the transfer from building to building with no trouble at all, as you’ll hear on this recording from the 2017 Fall tour.

A local reference is always a good way to get an audience firmly on your side, and so it is when the band invokes “PHILADELPHIA, PA!” in the show-opening “Dancing In The Street.” The crowd remains right with them through such first-set highlights as “Row Jimmy,” “Friend Of The Devil” and “Let It Grow.” Opening a second set with “Dark Star” is always a sign of wide-open exploration to come, and this time is no exception, as the band goes to some rewarding improvisatory places, shifts gears into “Truckin’” and then swings into Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightnin’.” The energy sustains through the rest of the show with fine versions of “Deal,” and “Eyes Of The World,” an always-welcome side trip into Beatlemania with “Dear Prudence” and the set-closing combo of “Uncle John’s Band” and “Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad,” followed by an encore of the moving “Black Muddy River.”

The Northeastern United States, and New England in particular, were always very good to the Grateful Dead in terms of fan support, and the Dead rewarded New England in turn with many appearances and memorable shows in the area. Connecticut’s state capital hosted numerous shows by the band, primarily at the Hartford Civic Center, which had been renamed the XL Center by the time Dead & Company arrived there for this excellent performance.

The band kicks things off by bringing a bit of New Orleans to Hartford with a lively “Iko Iko,” and keeps the dancers going with “Shakedown Street,” “They Love Each Other” and “Loose Lucy” before ending the first set with a lovely “Bird Song.” The second set opens things up with “Estimated Prophet” and “Eyes Of The World,” followed by a beautiful rendition of the heartbreaking “China Doll,” featuring Oteil Burbridge on lead vocal. The energy ratchets right back up with “The Other One,” exceptionally abstract Drums and Space segments and a rare revival of what came to be known as the “Spanish Jam,” an instrumental piece in part inspired by the Miles Davis composition “Solea.” A powerful “Black Peter” sets up a finale of “Uncle John’s Band” and “U.S. Blues,” and then Bob Dylan’s mournful “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” as encore.

Get Your Wings is the second studio album by American rock band Aerosmith, released March 15, 1974. The album is the first to feature production from Jack Douglas, who produced the band’s next four albums. Three singles were released from the album, but none of them made the pop charts…

Often overshadowed by the subsequent twin highlights of Toys in the Attic and Rocks, Aerosmith’s 1974 second album, Get Your Wings, is where Aerosmith became Aerosmith — it’s where they teamed up with producer Jack Douglas, it’s where they shed much of their influences and developed their own trademark sound, it’s where they turned into songwriters, it’s where Steven Tyler unveiled his signature obsessions with sex and sleaze. Chief among these attributes may be Douglas, who either helped the band ease into the studio or captured their sound in a way their debut never did. This is a leaner, harder album, bathed in grease and layered in grit, but it’s not just down to Douglas. The band itself sounds more distinctive. There are blues in Joe Perry and Joey Kramer’s interplay, but this leapfrogs over blues-rock; it turns into slippery hard rock. To be sure, it’s still easy to hear the Stones here, but they never really sound Stonesy; there’s almost more of the Yardbirds to the way the group works the riffs, particularly evident on the cover of the early ‘Birds classic “The Train Kept a Rollin’.” But if the Yardbirds were tight and nervy, Aerosmith is blown out and loose, the sound of excess incarnate — that is, in every way but the writing itself, which is confident and strong, fueled by Tyler’s gonzo sex drive. He is the “Lord of the Thighs,” playing that “Same Old Song and Dance,” but he also slows down enough for the eerie “Seasons of Wither,” a powerful slow-churning ballad whose mastery of atmosphere is a good indication of how far the band has grown. They never attempted anything quite so creepy on their debut, but it isn’t just that Aerosmith is trying newer things on Get Your Wings, it’s that they’re doing their bloozy bluster better and bolder, which is what turns this sophomore effort into their first classic. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Rocks is the fourth studio album by American rock band Aerosmith, released May 14, 1976. AllMusic described Rocks as having “captured Aerosmith at their most raw and rocking.” Rocks was ranked No. 176 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It has greatly influenced many hard rock and heavy metal artists, including Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and Nirvana. The album was a commercial success, charting three singles on the Billboard Hot 100, two of which reached the Top 40 (“Back in the Saddle” and “Last Child”). The album was one of the first to ship platinum when it was released, and has since gone quadruple platinum.

A-ha’s 7th studio album which achieved Top 10 success in 9 countries charting at No. 1 in four of those. This pop album is defined by Harket’s instantly recognisable vocals and their signature electronically charged sound. Selling over 1.5 million copies worldwide, it is not difficult to see why this album is a staple item in any electronic/pop music fan’s collection.

A difference from their last effort yet undeniably a-ha. This time, the Norse purveyors of quality pop have opted for a variety of producers, ranging from Stephen Hague to Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. The album begins with a lush ballad — which is typical a-ha, pastoral with support orchestration — almost like a modern day Moody Blues. “You Wanted More” also follows this trait, only darker with spiky electronics. “Afternoon High” sketches out ’70s pastel glory similar to what Tears for Fears were getting at with parts of the Seeds of Love album. There are shades of Minor Earth Major Sky in that they keep the sugary neigh pleasant ballads vein to full emotional effect on “Turn the Lights Down,” “Time and Again,” and like MEMS’s Garbage homage “Sun Never Shone.” “Cannot Hide” opts for a Jennifer Paige “Crush” vibe with George Harrison-style guitar, while “Forever Not Yours”‘ pleasant dramatism echoes Darren Hayes’ recent Insatiable.

A-ha’s sixth studio album. This album defiantly marked the end of the band’s hiatus after their previous album ‘Memorial Beach’, shortly after their performance in 1998 at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, where they performed ‘Summer Moved On’ and ‘The Sun Always Shines on T.V.’. The album achieved top 10 success in 7 countries charting in top 5 positions in 5 of these.

A-ha’s sixth studio CD (seventh if their greatest-hits collection is included) came seven years after their previous album, Memorial Beach, and in that time it seems that a-ha mellowed out. They do not seem to have concern about attracting the youth/dance market, but instead seem to be focusing in on how to make perfect middle-of-the-road pop songs with ’90s technology. This is not a criticism, as it produces several fantastic songs, such as “Little Black Heart” and the wonderful “I Wish That I Cared.” These, and many others, are full of catchy, beautiful melodies and Morten Harket’s vocals are near perfect as usual — his voice has not lowered one octave since their debut. The one problem with this CD is the relative sameness to some of the music. The tempos do not change a great deal, and by the end the songs seem to run together. More variety would have been beneficial. However, in terms of production, this is as close to perfect as a CD can get, and the lyrics keep things interesting throughout. Overall, a good album, and one that fans will enjoy.

It’s been just eight months since the release of Alessia Cara’s deeply personal sophomore album, The Pains of Growing. Now, in the midst of a continent-wide tour with superstar Shawn Mendes, the songstress is delivering her new song, “Ready,” after teasing it on Twitter.

“Caught the writing bug out of the blue and made an EP,” the 23-year-old Grammy winner wrote in the post. “it’s called This Summer. I’ll be releasing a new track every couple of weeks until it’s release.”

“Ready” is a reggae-tinged track that sounds like it was made with summer in mind. “You start a million fires just to see what they can do/ But then you freeze up like winter season in June,” Cara sings. “Oh you’re not ready for, ready for me,” she continues in the empowering tune about choosing not to stick around with someone who’s not ready for commitment.

Hailed by Rolling Stone as a “stomping, swaggering rock & roll balancing act teetering between blinding light and total darkness,” Barns Courtney releases his newest album, 404, on September 6 by Capitol Records. Barns wrote and produced the 10-song collection with synth wiz and longtime friend Sam Battle. All in all, 404 is a commentary on his journey from awe struck naivety to the dark realization of adulthood. Barns Courtney has already surpassed a half billion cumulative streams globally and is currently touring with Elle King. In between headline dates, he’s opened for everyone from The Who and Blur to Ed Sheeran and The Wombats, prompting The Dallas Observer to note, “At the rate he’s been performing, it won’t be long until he’s burned his name into the memory of anyone and everyone who bought a ticket to see someone different.”

Beth Hart is as real as it gets. At a time when other musicians polish their songs, airbrush their image, conceal their blemishes, deny their age and bury their darkest secrets, this is one artist who throws down her cards and invites you to either walk or love her anyway. And with War In My Mind, this Grammy-nominated talent has never served herself up so raw, on a record that embraces her merits and flaws, channels her bittersweet headspace and spins gold from her demons. “More than any record I’ve ever made, I’m more open to being myself on these songs,” Beth explains. “I’ve come a long way with healing, and I’m comfortable with my darknesses, weirdnesses and things that I’m ashamed of – as well as all the things that make me feel good.”

The immersive sound of War In My Mind is visceral and alive, every song a testament to Rob Cavallo’s production smarts. Beth says, “I think one of Rob’s greatest talents is that he completely allows artists to have their own vision. Never once did I have anything disappointing happen to one of these songs.”

Having followed the fascinating career of Beth Hart for a quarter-century, we’ve learnt not to rule anything out – so long as it’s real. And now, with War In My Mind, this songwriter has made a record that bares her soul, represents her warts-and-all, and makes no apology for it.

The Cologne Stadtgarten venue was crammed that mid-February eve in 2011. A very special concert was scheduled for the night – the American saxophonist Bill Evans was in town to perform with the WDR Big Band.

The crowd’s anticipation of a sublime live concert made the air crackle with excitement. The temperature was rising quickly and the vibe was getting better and better. Evans has always loved that sort of setting. The atmosphere created by the audience combined with the musicians being incredibly focused on what is about to unfold, it creates the perfect atmosphere that enables him to deliver a top performance on stage, performing on both tenor and soprano saxophone.

Especially for the WDR Big Band concert with Bill Evans two “Groove-Masters” were invited; the German drummer Wolfgang Haffner and the Cameroon-born and France-based bassist Etienne Mbappé. Haffner and Mbappé, are gifted with the ability to roll out a densely woven groove-carpet while simultaneously electrifying the rhythmical roots of a piece of music. As a result of this, the stylistically diverse music of Evans and the WDR Big Bans is well and truly animated – and starts to sound like a living musical organism.

‘Western Stars – Songs From The Film’ is the companion album to the Warner Bros. feature film, ‘Western Stars.’ The collection features each of the live performances captured in Bruce Springsteen’s directorial debut ‘Western Stars.’ The soundtrack includes every song from Springsteen’s most recent and critically-acclaimed studio album of the same name, as well as a cover of Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy.” Pulling the audio from the film co-directed by Bruce Springsteen and longtime collaborator Thom Zimny, ‘Western Stars – Songs From The Film’ is backed by a full band and orchestra, recorded live at Stone Hill Farm in Colts Neck, NJ.

Bruce Springsteen chose not to tour behind Western Stars, the lush album he released at the start of the summer of 2019. Instead, he decided to underscore its cinematic undercurrent by releasing a film documenting a performance of the album’s songs recorded with a full orchestra in an old barn. In the film, the songs are punctuated by stories and narration from Bruce, but the soundtrack album merely replicates the running order of the studio album, adding a cover of Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy” as an elegiac closer (its key line “there’s been a load of compromisin’/on the road to my horizon” could be sung by any of Bruce’s characters on Western Stars). Springsteen reportedly labored over Western Stars for years, so it’s not surprising that the arrangements on Western Stars: Songs from the Film essentially mimic those on the studio set; not only did he get those tunes right on record, he was out promoting the album. Because of this, Western Stars: Songs from the Film doesn’t pack a wallop, but it does have its own distinct vibe, largely due to his vocal performance. On the studio set, he can soar with grace, but here Springsteen seems a little weathered — a tonal texture that suits his bittersweet tunes, and also lends itself well to the occasional harmony from Patti Scialfa. Springsteen’s earthy phrasing helps ground these songs and makes for an intriguing, occasionally moving complement to the main album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Legendary “Rock Band With Horns” Gets Into The Spirit Of The Holiday Season With An Album That Mixes Original Christmas Songs And Yuletide Favorites

Produced by founding member Lee Loughnane, CHICAGO CHRISTMAS is the 37th album of the band’s career and its fourth holiday collection. Whereas its previous releases focused more on traditional Christmas songs, the new record spotlights holiday music the band wrote especially for the album, including “All Over The World,” “(Because) It’s Christmastime,” and “I’m Your Santa Claus.” The album also features R&B and ballad versions of “Merry Christmas, I Love You,” a song that Loughnane wrote with John Durrill of The Ventures, the best-selling instrumental band of all time.

Along with the new songs, the album also features the band’s interpretations of two holiday standards: “Here We Come A Caroling” and “Sleigh Ride.” It’s the second time Chicago has recorded “Sleigh Ride.” A different version appears on Chicago XXXIII: O Christmas Thee (2011). The album’s other non-original track is a soulful Chicago interpretation of the Hal David and Burt Bacharach classic, “What The World Needs Now Is Love,” which founding member Robert Lamm thought had a timely message for the holidays.

Chicago Christmas features original compositions by many of the band members, along with unmistakable horn arrangements by founding member James Pankow. The album was recorded and mixed by Tim Jessup.

Chicago’s groundbreaking 1969 debut showcased the band’s imaginative writing and brilliant musicality alongside a genre-blending mix of Rock and Jazz.

In celebration of the album’s 50th anniversary, Chicago have remixed the album (with Tim Jessup).

Originally released on April 28, 1969, Chicago Transit Authority topped the album chart, was certified double platinum and earned the band a Grammy® nomination for Best New Artist. The album also has the unique distinction of having stayed on the charts for an amazing three-year run (171 weeks); a record when it was released.

This classic double album includes several of the group’s most-enduring hits: “Beginnings,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” and “Questions 67 and 68.” It also features the signature guitar work of the late Terry Kath on “South California Purple,” “Free Form Guitar” and a blazing cover of “I’m A Man.”

The album features Kath, keyboardist Robert Lamm, bassist Peter Cetera, drummer Danny Seraphine and Chicago’s legendary horn section: Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), and Walt Parazaider (saxophone).

Few debut albums can boast as consistently solid an effort as the self-titled Chicago Transit Authority (1969). Even fewer can claim to have enough material to fill out a double-disc affair. Although this long- player was ultimately the septet’s first national exposure, the group was far from the proverbial “overnight sensation.” Under the guise of the Big Thing, the group soon to be known as CTA had been honing its eclectic blend of jazz, classical, and straight-ahead rock & roll in and around the Windy City for several years. Their initial non-musical meeting occurred during a mid-February 1967 confab between the original combo at Walter Parazaider’s apartment on the north side of Chi Town. Over a year later, Columbia Records staff producer James Guercio became a key supporter of the group, which he rechristened Chicago Transit Authority. In fairly short order the band relocated to the West Coast and began woodshedding the material that would comprise this title. In April of 1969, the dozen sides of Chicago Transit Authority unleashed a formidable and ultimately American musical experience. This included an unheralded synthesis of electric guitar wailin’ rock & roll to more deeply rooted jazz influences and arrangements. This approach economized the finest of what the band had to offer — actually two highly stylized units that coexisted with remarkable singularity. On the one hand, listeners were presented with an incendiary rock & roll quartet of Terry Kath (lead guitar/vocals), Robert Lamm (keyboards/vocals), Peter Cetera (bass/vocals), and Danny Seraphine (drums). They were augmented by the equally aggressive power brass trio that included Lee Loughnane (trumpet/vocals), James Pankow (trombone), and the aforementioned Parazaider (woodwind/vocals). This fusion of rock with jazz would also yield some memorable pop sides and enthusiasts’ favorites as well. Most notably, a quarter of the material on the double album — “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?,” “Beginnings,” “Questions 67 and 68,” and the only cover on the project, Steve Winwood’s “I’m a Man” — also scored as respective entries on the singles chart. The tight, infectious, and decidedly pop arrangements contrast with the piledriving blues-based rock of “Introduction” and “South California Purples” as well as the 15-plus minute extemporaneous free for all “Liberation.” Even farther left of center are the experimental avant-garde “Free Form Guitar” and the politically intoned and emotive “Prologue, August 29, 1968” and “Someday (August 29, 1968).” The 2003 remastered edition of Chicago Transit Authority offers a marked sonic improvement over all previous pressings — including the pricey gold disc incarnation. – AllMusic Review by Lindsay Planer

Announcing the new album, Coldplay spoke about the thinking behind it; “(this album) is our reaction to the perceived negativity that’s everywhere. ”What has not been tried over the years in order to twin over children and young people to classical music? There is a veritable market devoted to attracting and luring the young. Pianist Corinna Simon always found one aspect of this endeavor rather strange: Why on earth expose small children at the outset to large-scale works, why expect them to sit still through the entire overture to Mozart s Magic Flute? We ve all been there. However, there is actually a wealth of small-scale gems, specially crafted for children s ears and hands, whose format will not overwhelm or wear out the young listeners. And this treasure trove is now presented on this two-album set by pianist Corinna Simon: Filled with fascinating and diverse material from the undiscovered and vast domain of piano music composed for children, ”;”;Piano For Kids”; aims to awaken young listeners curiosity and to tempt them off the beaten track. In fact, this recording is an enjoyable, easy listening experience not only for children, but for everyone who is interested in piano music. For this recording, Corinna Simon has selected piano pieces from three centuries, ranging from Bach to Haydn and Schumann to Shostakovich and even to the film music composer Nino Rota. That said, many famous composers have indeed written piano works for children. Some of them are well known, such as “”Little Preludes”” by Johann Sebastian Bach or the “”Album for the Youth”” by Robert Schumann which are all to be found on this album. However, after many years of experience also as a piano teacher, pianist Corinna Simon has discovered many other fascinating works, which stayed largely unknown, by composers all over the world such as “”Six Children s Pieces”” by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, “”Dances of the Dolls”” by Dmitri Shostakovich, “”For Children to Eavesdrop”” by Paul Juon, “”In the Shoe Store”” by Joaquin Turina or “”Puppets”” by Bohuslav Martinu – just to name a few.”
