SONY/Legacy Recordings is proud to announce the release of Band of Brothers, the new Willie Nelson studio album premiering 14 performances including nine brand-new songs composed by America’s quintessential pop/country songwriter.

The much-anticipated successor To All The Girls… (which became Willie’s first Top 10 album in more than three decades when it was released in October 2013) Band of Brothers is the artist’s first album of predominately new original material in nearly two decades, debuting the master tunesmith’s first major batch of newly-penned songs since his Spirit album in 1996. ”I got on kind of a writing kick,” Willie Nelson said recently, ”it’s good to be writing again.”

The influential songwriter–whose early successes brought pop and country together with unforgettable standards like “Crazy” (Patsy Cline), “Hello Walls” (Faron Young), “Funny How Time Slips Away” (Billy Walker), “Night Life” (Ray Price) and many others–has added nine new essential songs to his classic catalog. One of Willie’s most personal albums to-date, the songs on Band of Brothers range from the introspective (“The Wall” and “Send Me a Picture”) to the rollicking (“Wives and Girlfriends” and “Used To Her”).

Rounding out the album are five songs, penned by others, which compliment and unite the album’s sonic textures and lyric themes. Included are Willie’s interpretations of Vince Gill’s Whenever You Come Around”, Billy Joe Shaver’s ”The Git Go” (a duet with Jamey Johnson) and the appropriately-titled “Songwriter,” written by Gordie Sampson and Bill Anderson.

All 14 tracks on Band of Brothers are new recordings and none of the songs have been previously recorded by Willie Nelson.

Working again with producer Buddy Cannon, who helmed Willie’s first three Legacy releases, and a band featuring Jim “Moose” Brown (keyboards), Eddie Bayers (drums), Kevin “Swine” Grantt (bass), Bobby Terry (guitar), Tommy White (steel guitar), Mickey Raphael (harmonica) and Trigger (Willie’s guitar), Willie Nelson recorded the bulk of Band of Brothers during sessions at Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville with additional recording at Pedernales Studio, Austin, Texas and The Hit Factory Criteria, Miami, Florida. Recording sessions took place between October 2013 and March 2014.

“When all the songs have been written/When all of the music has played/When the curtain comes down we’ll still be around/To make sure the musicians are paid, cause,” Willie sings on the album’s title track, an anthemic salute to the universal camaraderie of music and the uncompromising vision of a great American songwriter:

“We’re a band of brothers and sisters and whatever
On a mission to break all the rules
And I know you love me ’cause I love you too
But you can’t tell me what to do”

Good Times is the eighth studio album by country singer Willie Nelson. Arrangements were by Anita Kerr, Bill Walker and Ray Stevens.

This is kind of an odd record. One side is very sparse instrumentally, while the other side has three different people providing arrangements. The songs are okay (maybe subpar for Nelson), with one of the most interesting being his cover of Mickey Newbury’s “Sweet Memories.” ~~ AllMusic Review by Jim Worbois

Django and Jimmie is a new duet album featuring country artists Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. The record marks the sixth collaborative album released by the duo and features guest artists Jamey Johnson and Bobby Bare. Django and Jimmie is a mix of originals as well as covers including Bob Dylan’s famous title “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”.

Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard first teamed up on record for Pancho & Lefty in 1983, a record released some 20 years after both singers began their careers. Back then, they were both hovering around 50, already considered old guys, but Django and Jimmie arrives 32 years after that record, when there’s no question that the pair are old-timers. Appropriately enough, mortality is on their minds throughout Django and Jimmie, a record whose very title is taken from Willie and Merle’s childhood idols. It’s a song that seems like a confession, as does the casual admission that they didn’t think they’d “Live This Long,” but neither Nelson nor Haggard wrote this, nor the title track or the album’s first single, the near-novelty “It’s All Going to Pot.” These are made-to-order originals by some of the best in the business — Buddy Cannon, Jamey Johnson, and Ward Davis wrote “It’s All Going to Pot,” Jimmy Melton and Jeff Prince the title track — and it shows how producer Cannon has a sharp ear for material, along with a way with a relaxed groove. That comfortable, familial atmosphere is one of the best things about Django and Jimmie and extends far beyond the marquee names; the studio pros, friends, family, and fellow travelers who support Willie and Merle help give this a warm, worn-in feel that’s appealing on its own terms. As comforting as the vibe is, it’s the singers and their songs that linger. Neither Nelson nor Haggard make any attempt to hide their age — Willie is a bit thinner than he used to be, Merle a bit growlier — and their age is affecting when they revisit songs from the past, whether they wrote them or not (Hag’s “Swinging Doors” is revived, as is the country standard “Family Bible” and Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”). This nod to the passage of time isn’t as explicit as “Live This Long” or “Missing Ol’ Johnny Cash,” where they bring in fellow survivor Bobby Bare to reminisce about their old pal. Often, country memories can get maudlin, but Willie and Merle are filled with good humor here and the pair often strike a delicate balance of fun and sweet melancholy which gives Django and Jimmie a soulful lift. Both singers are aware they’re approaching the twilight, but they’re not cursing the dark, they’re enjoying the sunset. ~~AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Pancho & Lefty is a honky tonk country album by two of the biggest names in outlaw country, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. The album was produced by Haggard, Nelson, and Chips Moman. The title track was written by Townes Van Zandt. The album was very well-received by critics, and reached #1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and #37 on the Top 200 chart.

On Pancho & Lefty, their first album together, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson managed a rare feat: an album by two legends that lives up to, and at one point exceeds, expectations. In 1982, both artists were at the top of their game, Haggard just having released a great comeback album in Big City, and Nelson in the midst of a creative and commercial peak. The centerpiece of the album is the title track. Penned by Texas songwriter Townes Van Zandt, the ballad of two renegades and the respect they earned from the law is the perfect vehicle for Haggard and Nelson, both of whom managed to achieve legendary status in spite of being outsiders to the Nashville establishment. The song’s production enhances its power; it is polished without becoming slick (note Nelson’s double-tracked guitar solo), and there’s power in reserve — in the wrong hands, this could easily have become a bombastic, over the top performance. Nothing else on the album comes close to the majesty of “Pancho and Lefty.” That’s not to say that the rest is not good, though. The other songs are all relaxed ruminations on life, from the joys of taking it easy on the throwaway “It’s My Lazy Day” to the pain of love lost on Nelson’s chestnut “Half a Man.” Throughout, Haggard and Nelson duet in equal measure; one gets the sense that this is a collaboration in every sense. The sequence of “Reasons to Quit” and “No Reason to Quit” is an inspired bit of programming, both honky tonk songs of the first rank. Pancho & Lefty was followed in 1987 by Seashores of Old Mexico, a far less successful collaboration. ~~AllMusic Review by Martin Monkman

Wanted! The Outlaws is an album by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser, released in RCA Victor in 1976, and consisting of previously released material. Released to capitalize on the new outlaw country movement, Wanted! The Outlaws earned its place in music history by becoming the first country album to sell a million copies. The original liner notes were written by Chet Flippo, a contributor to Rolling Stone, and offer a short introduction and some praise on each artist involved with the project.

The term “outlaw” had been bandied about after Waylon Jennings’ 1972 hit “Ladies Love Outlaws,” but it didn’t permanently gel until the release of the album Wanted! The Outlaws in 1976. The songs in this packaged product weren’t new — the album contained previously released material by Jennings, Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser, and Jennings’ wife Jessi Colter (who had hit the charts a year earlier with “I’m Not Lisa”). But it marked the industry’s recognition of the changing times, and as the center point of a campaign to publicize Nashville’s new “progressive” breed, it worked like a charm. It quickly became the first country album to sell more than a million copies, and it boosted the careers of all involved. –AllMusic Review by Kurt Wolff

One for the Road, Willie Nelson’s duet record with fellow American music maverick Leon Russell, followed months after his freewheeling, jam-heavy double album Willie and Family Live. This record (once a double LP, now a single CD) wasn’t recorded live and the songs run a little shorter, but it shares the same sort of loose spirit and easy-rolling eclecticism as the two, essentially backed by the Family, run through a mess of country and pop standards. The latter makes up for the second half and its appropriately a little more subdued feel, but it’s earthier than Stardust and it makes a good companion for the irresistible first half, which is often cheerfully rowdy (particularly on the dynamite opening triptych of “Detour,” “I Saw the Light,” and “Heartbreak Hotel”) and convincingly bluesy on the ballads and mid-tempo groovers like the excellent “Trouble in Mind.” Both Nelson and Russell are known as sharp interpreters of other people’s material, and teamed together, they might not reinvent these songs (though they come close on “Heartbreak Hotel”), but they infuse a lot of sound and spirit into these songs. It’s a little bit too laid-back and easy to qualify as a no-holds-barred classic (particularly on the second half), but that mellow charm is precisely why it’s a small, priceless gem for any serious fan of either singer. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Willie Nelson’s new album of pop standards, penned by America’s legendary songwriting duo George and Ira Gershwin, follows the selection of Willie as the 2015 recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Among the 11 Gershwin classics recorded by Willie Nelson for his new album are two duets: “Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off” with Cyndi Lauper (the song was originally introduced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1937 film Shall We Dance) and “Embraceable You” with Sheryl Crow (the song was performed by Ginger Rogers in Girl Crazy, recorded by Billie Holiday in 1944 and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2005). Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin hearkens back to Stardust, the 1978 blockbuster album of pop standards that secured Willie’s reputation as pop balladeer, in addition to his status as one of the architects of outlaw country music.

In 2015, Willie Nelson became the first country artist to receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, an honor so deserving, it almost seemed like destiny. Similarly, Nelson’s reaction to the award feels a bit preordained: he settled into the studio with much of his band and longtime producer Buddy Cannon to cut 11 George Gershwin tunes. It’s largely the same crew who were responsible for 2013’s Let’s Face the Music and Dance, the last all-standards Nelson release, but Summertime feels a bit different: more intimate but also more straightforward, swapping nods to Western swing for a conventionally jazzy swing. Compared to 1978’s classic Stardust, where Nelson channeled the Great American Songbook through his sensibility, Summertime contains standards done in a standard fashion – or at least as close to standard as Willie can manage – but unlike 2009’s American Classic, which felt weighed down by its stately arrangements, this is light on its feet, with the bandmembers enjoying their lazy strolls and cozy shuffles. So relaxed is the band that the two invited guests – Cyndi Lauper playing to the nonexistent rafters on “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” Sheryl Crow vamping through “Embraceable You” – feel like interlopers, not quite jibing with the vibe of the whole thing because they take it all a bit too seriously. For Nelson and his gang, this album might be tied to a specific, significant event, but that’s no reason not to take it easy. All of Summertime’s charm is tied directly to its mellowness. Perhaps it would have been a more interesting record if it had a hint of adventure – if Nelson and Cannon took risks with the arrangements or if Willie played around with his phrasing – but what’s here is warm and inviting, a record by an artist who is happy to be part of the great tradition of American song.

To All the Girls… is Willie Nelson’s newest album, consisting of a series of duets recorded with many famous female names in country music. The guest singers featured on the album include Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Carrie Underwood, Sheryl Crow, Mavis Staples, Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris, and Willie Nelson’s daughter, Paula Nelson. Hailed as “a wonderful album” by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, this record will certainly please both old and new fans of Willie Nelson.

Arriving a few short months after the standards collection Let’s Face the Music and Dance, which itself came less than a year after his Legacy debut Heroes, To All the Girls splits the difference between these two albums for Legacy. As a duets album comprised entirely of female partners, To All the Girls is, like Heroes, driven by superstar guest power but the intimate, relaxed feel is reminiscent of Let’s Face the Music and Dance. Such a quiet, comfortable setting is welcoming to a wide variety of partners, ranging from living legends Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Mavis Staples, and Emmylou Harris to more recent superstars Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. Between these two extremes lie such excellent, underappreciated, new alt-country singers like Brandi Carlile and the Secret Sisters, family — both sister Paula Nelson and Melonie Cannon, the daughter of Buddy Cannon — and stars who are working their way toward legend status (Norah Jones, Alison Krauss, Sheryl Crow, Wynnona Judd, Shelby Lynne). Similarly, the songs split the difference between new versions of Nelson classics (“Bloody Mary Morning,” “Always on My Mind,” “Please Don’t’ Tell Me How the Story Ends”), covers of beloved songs (“Til the End of the World,” “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”), and brand-new tunes (Dolly brings in “From Here to the Moon and Back,” which she wrote for Joyful Noise, a gospel musical co-starring Queen Latifah). Nearly all of this proceeds at an amiably lazy gait, which makes the handful of cuts that stray from this path quite notable: “Bloody Mary Morning” retains its trademark gallop with Wynnona; Brandi Carlile hits the honky tonk fairly hard on “Making Believe”; Shelby Lynne gives a hazy south-of-the-border feel to “The End of the World,” and Krauss’ “No Mas Amor” is dreamy. Although there is not a bad cut here — this is all assured, easy, impeccably tasteful work from Willie and his partners — the 70-minute length of To All the Girls does make the album feel a little samey, but that can be a good thing, as it makes for nice, romantic mood music or a drowsy Sunday afternoon at home. ~~AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Originally released in 1971, „Yesterday’s Wine“ was Willie Nelson’s final album at RCA Records, for whom he recorded between 1965 and 1971. The album also marked Willie’s farewell from Nashville–after a frustrating decade in Music City, Nelson packed up and moved back to Texas before „Yesterday’s Wine“ was released. Adding to its historical significance, „Yesterday’s Wine“ is also the first Willie Nelson ‘concept’ album and thus paved the way for „Phases And Stages“, „Red Headed Stranger“, and other Nelson classics.

„Yesterday’s Wine“ tells the story of a man watching his own funeral and reflecting on his life. The album includes a number of Nelson standards, among them the title track, ‘Family Bible,’ ‘December Day,’ and a perfect kiss-off to Nashville, ‘Me and Paul.’ The all-star studio band includes ‘Pig’ Robbins on piano, Charlie McCoy on harmonica and Roy Huskey Jr. on bass, but because Nelson wrote most of the material the weekend prior to recording, both the playing and arrangements are muted. A great album that foreshadows the path Nelson would follow to superstardom.

Though mid-’70s albums like Shotgun Willie and Red Headed Stranger are often held up as the finest examples of Willie Nelson’s album craft (showcasing the country legend exploring his chosen theme over the course of records that played like unified song suites), Yesterday’s Wine, their 1971 predecessor, should also take its rightful place among his best-loved works. A series of meditations on God, love, and aging, these songs are fragmented reflections on the life of Nelson’s “imperfect man” as he approaches death. Though the story isn’t as tightly constructed as that of Red Headed Stranger, this fact lends Yesterday’s Wine a feeling of malleability that adds to its power. At the album’s heart are “Summer of Roses,” “December Day,” and the title track — songs that detail a sense of longing and loss with the changing seasons mirroring the narrator’s own life. Throughout, the outlaw subtext Nelson would become associated with a few years later is replaced by an underlying religious faith. While there may not be any songs here of the same caliber as “Whiskey River” (Shotgun Willie) or “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” (Red Headed Stranger), many of the numbers stand on their own, outside the album context. “Family Bible,” “Me and Paul,” and the title track are all particularly fine examples of Nelson’s songcraft. As a whole, Yesterday’s Wine provides further insight into the development of his art during this prolific period. ~~AllMusic Review by Nathan Bush

Heroes is a studio album by American country music singer Willie Nelson, released by Legacy Recordings on May 15, 2012. Produced by Buddy Cannon, the album contains classic country songs, new songs written by Nelson and his son Lukas, and the classic song from Nelson’s repertoire, “A Horse Called Music”. Guest appearances include Lukas Nelson, Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Johnson, Billy Joe Shaver, and Sheryl Crow.

Returning to the Columbia/Sony family after nearly two decades away, Willie Nelson once again tries to be everything to everybody on 2012’s Heroes, an appealingly misshapen collection of classics, contemporaries, and originals. Heroes — its title signifying no great concept — is roughly divided into quarters, with part of the album devoted to the Western swing and Texas country he’s always loved to sing, part consisting of new songs from Willie, part originals from his son Lukas, and part covers of newer, rock-oriented tunes from the likes of Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, and Chris Martin. Each of these categories is a bit hit-or-miss, either succumbing to cutesy novelty (the dope-smoking anthem “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,” complete with country cadences from a non-rapping Snoop Dogg) or laziness, and there’s a wee bit too much Lukas Nelson scattered throughout the record, with the son of the father singing on no less than nine of the album’s 14 songs. This can be too much of a strong spice, obscuring the overall flavor of the music, but Lukas contributes a couple of the record’s best songs in “Every Time He Drinks He Thinks of Her” and “The Sound of Your Memory,” songs that fit well next to a quite beautiful version of Vedder’s “Just Breathe” and yet another strong, swinging rendition of “My Window Faces the South.” And so Heroes kind of winds up summarizing all that’s good and bad about Willie as he approaches his 80th birthday: he’s open to everything but has no innate editor, so he whiffs as often as he connects, but when he does connect, it’s a wonder to behold…and somehow he can still surprise whenever he sings those old songs. ~~ AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Nelson’s first “concept” album, the Jerry Wexler-produced (at Muscle Shoals) Phases and Stages, providing both a man and a woman’s viewpoints on a crumbling marriage. First released in 1974, it features the stand-outs “Bloody Mary Morning,” “Walkin’,” “Pretend I Never Happened,” and the title track.

If Shotgun Willie played a bit like a concept album, Phases and Stages was a full-blown one, tracing the dissolution of a marriage and devoting one side to the wife’s perspective, the second to the husband’s. If anything, Willie overplays his hand a bit, insisting on grafting the “Phases and Stages” theme between crucial songs to the point of genuine irritation. But, pretend that never happened, erase it from your mind, and Phases and Stages is easily the equal of its remarkable predecessor, a wonderful set of music that resonates deeply, as deeply as the words. Make no mistake — the deceptively relaxed arrangements, including the occasional strings, not only highlight Nelson’s clever eclecticism, but they also heighten the emotional impact of the album. And this is a hell of an emotional record, where even each side’s celebratory honky tonk numbers (the medley “Sister’s Coming Home/Down at the Corner Beer Joint” and “Pick Up the Tempo,” respectively) are muted by sadness. Then, there are the centerpieces: “Walkin’,” where the woman decides it’s time to move on; “Pretend I Never Happened,” perhaps the coldest ending to a relationship ever written; “Bloody Mary Morning,” a bleary-eyed morning-after tale that became a standard; “It’s Not Supposed to Be That Way,” a nearly unbearably melancholy account of a love gone wrong; and “Heaven and Hell,” a waltz summary of the relationship. Any two of these would have formed a strong core for an album, but placed together in a narrative context, their impact is even more considerable. As a result, this is not just one of Willie Nelson’s best records, but one of the great concept albums overall. ~~AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The legendary career of Texas-born music icon Willie Nelson has spanned six decades and stands as one of contemporary music’s greatest legacies. Nelson first rose to fame as a Nashville-based songwriter, penning many now timeless standards including “Crazy,” a top hit for Patsy Cline. Feeling constrained by the Nashville music establishment, Willie relocated to Austin in the early ‘70s, where the melding of rock and country audiences made a huge impression on him. He began fusing folk and roots rock with a rebellious “outlaw” country flavor, inventing an authentic, stripped-down sound that remains vastly influential to this day. At this pivotal point in his artistic evolution, Nelson signed to Atlantic Records, delivering two signature albums revered as all-time masterpieces of his extensive repertoire, Shotgun Willie and Phases And Stages.

Transferring his allegiance to Atlantic (where he would record two remarkable albums that would get him kicked off the label), Willie Nelson offered his finest record to date for his debut — possibly his finest album ever. Shotgun Willie encapsulates Willie’s world view and music, finding him at a peak as a composer, interpreter, and performer. This is laid-back, deceptively complex music, equal parts country, rock attitude, jazz musicianship, and troubadour storytelling. Nelson blurs the lines between his own tunes and covers to the point that “Whiskey River,” this record’s best-known song, seems thoroughly original, yet it was written by Johnny Bush and Paul Stroud. This, along with two songs apiece by Leon Russell and Bob Wills, provides context for his originals, with Shotgun Willie becoming a musical autobiography, offering not only insights into his musicality (witness how he slows down “Stay All Night [Stay a Little Longer]” to a slow shuffle) but, seemingly, into himself (most notably on the title track and the wonderful, funny travelogue “Devil in a Sleepin’ Bag”). Nelson wasn’t just at a peak of performing here — he also wrote some of his greatest songs, highlighted not just by the previously mentioned tunes but also by the lovely slow waltz “Slow Down Old World” and “Sad Songs and Waltzes.” All of it adds up to possibly the finest record in a career filled with hits and highlights. ~~ AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Released in 1979, Sings Kristofferson is an album of covers of Kris Kristofferson songs sung by Willie Nelson. The album peaked at #5 on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums chart and at #42 on the Billboard 200 chart.

A return to country-rock after the smash success of Stardust the year before, this is one of Willie Nelson’s best albums. Admittedly, it doesn’t withstand comparisons to Shotgun Willie or any of his earlier triumphs, but it holds up as one of his most enjoyable second-stringers. “Me and Bobby McGee” is given an exciting, thunderous performance and “Why Me” is terrific, but perhaps more memorable are Nelson’s renditions of lesser-known Kristofferson treasures, such as the loping “The Pilgrim, Chapter 33” and the beautiful “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends.” As he demonstrated from the beginning, Nelson had one of the best interpretive gifts of any singer, and this album only strengthened that reputation. –AllMusic Review by Jim Smith

Released in 1976, The Troublemaker is a gospel album by Willie Nelson and was recorded in February 1973. It was produced by Arif Mardin and it hit #1 on the US Country Albums Chart and #6 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Released in late 1976, at the height of Willie mania, The Troublemaker is Willie Nelson’s first all-gospel album, but country gospel in his hands doesn’t sound like traditional country gospel — it’s a Willie album, through and through, performed with the freewheeling Family as support. Consequently, it’s every bit as wonderfully idiosyncratic as any of his other mid-’70s work and, in some ways, even more so, because inspirational songs and religious material are usually not given arrangements as imaginative and free-spirited as this. Although the album can be divided pretty evenly between ballads and rollicking up-tempo numbers, there is the inherent jazz-like unpredictability in the performances of Nelson and his band that makes even familiar numbers like “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” sound spontaneous. Then again, the choice of material also helps, because that song is the most familiar here; while many of the other numbers are also country gospel standards, they’re not recorded nearly as often as “Circle” and these song choices also give The Troublemaker a unique, fresh feel. Another interesting thing about the album is that the music, not the message, is at the forefront, which is why it doesn’t sound separate from his other mid-’70s peaks. Although it is overshadowed by them both, the sublime subtlety of the performances on The Troublemaker make it sound of a piece with The Red Headed Stranger and Stardust. It may not be nearly as popular as either, but musically, it’s just as satisfying and is one of the quiet highlights in Willie’s vast catalog. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Recorded in April 1978 at Harrah’s in Lake Tahoe, Nevada at the height of Willie madness, Willie and Family Live features guest vocalists Emmylou Harris and Johnny Paycheck on several songs. It peaked at #32 on the US Billboard 200 chart at #1 on the Top Country Albums chart.

Recorded at Lake Tahoe in 1978, WILLIE AND FAMILY LIVE effectively documents the laid-back, freewheeling approach Nelson and his band take to live performances. Unlike many country acts that strive to play the same set with the same note-for-note precision every night, Nelson’s band prefers to live on the edge, wringing surprises out of every note and beat. This “free jam” aesthetic explains why Nelson is popular among Grateful Dead fans, and aficionados of this musical approach will be most likely to enjoy WILLIE AND FAMILY LIVE.
The album, which clocks in at over ninety minutes, contains some instances of frustrating off-handedness (Nelson occasionally sings indifferently) but also many moments of full-throttle energy, including blistering versions of “Whiskey River,” “Under the Double Eagle,” and the Bob Wills classic “Stay a Little Longer,” as well as fine takes on the ballads “If You Could Touch Her At All” and “Till I Gain Control Again.” Nelson, his pianist sister Bobbie, and harmonica player Mickey Raphael are all great soloists, and each is given plenty of opportunities to stretch out and show off some hot licks.

Performed by Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Music Director by Sir Neville Marriner

A masterpiece of moviemaking that won eight Academy Awards, Amadeus is one of the few films about music that presents it with absolute fidelity to its maker’s intentions. When producer Saul Zaentz, director Milos Forman, and writer Peter Shaffer asked Sir Neville Marriner to conduct for tlie 1984 film, he told them yes, “Under one condition, that not one note of Mozart would be changed”.

Marriner’s stipulation was honored with such integrity, Forman declared that the music became the picture’s third character, after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salierl Marriner disagreed. He said that it was “possibly the first film that has music as its leading character”. Critics were as enthusiastic about the motion picture as were audiences. The soundtrack recording—a generous sampling of Mozart’s genius—stood on its own because of the brilliance of Marriner fs conducting and the performance of the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. “So many people,” he said, “were introduced to Mozart as a composer compared with what would have happened if we’d just done it in concert halls. It would have taken us a hundred years to reach as many people as the film readied”. Now, in the glory of sound made possible by Super Audio Compact Disc (SA-CD) technology, Mozart’s music reaches new generations of listeners.
