To Know You Is to Love You is the 22nd studio electric blues album by B. B. King, released in 1973. Produced by the musician and producer Dave Crawford in Philadelphia, it features the participation of Stevie Wonder and members of the famed MFSB session group, who formed the house band for Philadelphia International Records in the early and mid 1970s.

The combination of King and the well-oiled Philly rhythm section that powered hits by the O’Jays, Spinners, and Stylistics proved a surprisingly adroit one. Two huge hits came from this album, the Stevie Wonder/Syreeta Wright-penend title track and “I Like to Live the Love,” both of them intriguing updates of King’s tried-and-true style.

Tracklist:
01 – I Like To Live The Love
02 – Respect Yourself
03 – Who Are You
04 – Love
05 – I Can’t Leave
06 – To Know You Is To Love You
07 – Oh To Me
08 – Thank You For Loving The Blues

Mastering Engineer: Kevin Reeves @ 4th Floor Studios.

B.B. King was 77 years old when Reflections was released, which perhaps entitled him to reflect back on the song standards the album contained. Despite advancing age, King had already been unusually busy on the recording front for a septuagenarian, turning out the gold-selling duets album Deuces Wild in 1997, Blues on the Bayou in 1998, Let the Good Times Roll: The Music of Louis Jordan in 1999, the double-platinum Riding With the King with Eric Clapton and Makin’ Love Is Good for You in 2000, and the seasonal recording A Christmas Celebration of Hope in 2002. For Reflections, he again worked with Simon Climie, who produced Riding With the King, and collaborated with a session band including such notables as Joe Sample, Nathan East, and Doyle Bramhall II. The songs ranged from pop evergreens like “I’ll String Along With You” and “For Sentimental Reasons” to blues favorites such as Lonnie Johnson’s “Tomorrow Night,” with oddities like “Always on My Mind” thrown in and even a couple of remakes of the earlier King songs “Word of Honor” and “Neighborhood Affair.” The arrangements, which included horn and string parts, left room for King’s distinctive blues guitar work, but really supported his always expressive voice. The result was a confident, easygoing album that stylistically could have been made in 1953 as easily as 2003. Blues purists and aficionados of blues guitar would find it only partially satisfying, but it reflected the breadth of musical taste of an artist who always played the blues but never restricted himself only to blues music or blues fans.

Some Other Time: The Lost Session From the Black Forest is a newly unearthed studio session from the iconic pianist Bill Evans featuring bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Recorded on June 20, 1968, nearly 10 years after the legendary Kind of Blue sessions with Miles Davis and a mere five days after the trio’s incredible Grammy award-winning performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, this is truly a landmark discovery for jazz listeners worldwide. Available in deluxe 2-CD and limited edition 2-LP sets, and containing over 90 minutes of music, this is the only studio album in existence of the Bill Evans trio with Gomez and DeJohnette. Some Other Time was recorded by the legendary MPS Records founder and producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer along with writer/producer Joachim-Ernst Berendt at the MPS studios in the Black Forest (Villingen, Germany).

This double album includes 93 minutes of never-before-heard studio recordings by the great Bill Evans with captivating performances by Evans in solo, duo and trio settings. It is one of the most extraordinary musical archeological finds. The recordings on this album constitute the material from a June 20th, 1968 session recorded by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (HGBS) and Joachim-Ernst Brendt in Germany’s Black Forest that was originally intended for release on HGBS’s legendary MPS label but for some reason were never released. This is no ordinary recording. It’s a remarkable document of an under-represented period in the career of one of the icons of Jazz.

2xHD is proud to be associated with Resonance Records on this exceptional project.
For the 2xHD transfer of this recording, the original 1/4”, CCIR master tape was played on a Nagra-T modified with high-end tube playback electronics, wired with OCC silver cable from the playback head direct to a Telefunken EF806 tube. The Nagra T has one of the best transports ever made, having four direct drive motors, two pinch rollers and a tape tension head.
We did an analog transfer for each high-res sampling.

Few albums in the history of contemporary American music can be more deserving than this one of the designation Original Jazz Classic. It is the first of two Riverside albums derived from the legendary final appearance of the first Bill Evans trio – taped during the last day of a Village Vanguard engagement, barely ten days before the tragic death of bassist Scott LaFaro. The recordings have long been recognized as capturing the essence of the unique three-way interaction that characterized the trio. This album is further distinguished by its emphasis on the solo work and compositions of the innovative LaFaro.

Sunday at the Village Vanguard is the initial volume of a mammoth recording session by the Bill Evans Trio, from June 25, 1961 at New York’s Village Vanguard documenting Evans’ first trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. Its companion volume is Waltz for Debby. This trio is still widely regarded as his finest, largely because of the symbiotic interplay between its members. Tragically, LaFaro was killed in an automobile accident ten days after this session was recorded, and Evans assembled the two packages a few months afterward. While “Waltz for Debby” — in retrospect — is seemingly a showcase for Evans’ brilliant, subtle, and wide-ranging pianism, this volume becomes an homage, largely, to the genius and contribution of LaFaro. That said, however, this were never the point. According to Motian, when Evans built this trio based on live gigs at the Basin Street East, the intention was always to develop a complete interactive trio experience. At the time, this was an unheard of notion, since piano trios were largely designed to showcase the prowess of the front line soloist with rhythmic accompaniment. Here, one need listen no further than the elegant and haunting, graceful modal reading of “My Man’s Gone Now” from Porgy & Bess to know that there is something completely balanced and indescribably beautiful in their approach. Motian’s brushes whisper along the ride cymbals and both Evans and LaFaro enter into a dialogue that emerges from a darkly hued minor mode, into the melody and somehow beyond it, into a form of seamless dialogic improvisation to know that in the act of one musician slipping over and under another — as happens with all three in an aural basket weave — is something utterly new and different, often imitated but never replicated. But in a sense it happens before this, on LaFaro’s “Gloria’s Step,” which opens the recording. His thematic statement includes the briefest intro, hesitant and spacious before he and pianist enter into a harmonic and contrapuntal conversation underscored by the hushed dynamics of Motian’s snare, and the lightning-fast interlocutions of single string and chorded playing of LaFaro. The shapshifting reading of Miles Davis’ “Solar,” is a place where angularity, counterpoint, and early modalism all come together in a knotty and insistent, yet utterly seamless blend of post-bop aesthetics and expanded harmonic intercourse with Motian, whose work, while indispensable in the balance of the trio, comes more into play here, and is more assertive with his half-time accents to frame the counterpoint playing of Evans and LaFaro. This is a great place to begin with Evans. –Thom Jurek

About the Mastering
Four engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London have remastered these historic EMI recordings from their original analogue sources for release in pristine hi-def. Between them, Simon Gibson, Ian Jones, Andy Walter and Allan Ramsay have many years of experience remastering archive recordings for EMI and other record labels. The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI’s archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues. We consult each recording’s job file, which contains notes about the recording made by the engineer and producer. For example, this sometimes explain why there is more than one set of tapes to choose from. All of the tapes are generally in good condition and we play them on our Studer A80 π inch tape machine, after careful calibration of its replay characteristics.
In order to have the best digital remastering tools at our disposal for the remastering, we transfer from analogue to the digital domain at 96 KHz and 24-bit resolution using a Prism ADA-8 converter and capture the audio to our SADiE Digital Audio Workstation.

Here, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Pascal Rophé, with whom the æon label has collaborated since 2003, give us a very fine William Blank monograph, the fruit of the orchestra’s sustained work with this essential representative of Swiss creation, alongside his elder Heinz Holliger and his contemporary Michael Jarrell. Born in 1957 in Montreux, William Blank, composer and conductor, is performed the world over. With him, there are no (or few) evanescent layers, aleatoric or improvised passages. Rather, there is a sort of pointillism with a human face, a maniacal love of small detail behind which emotion is flushed out by harsh, searing intensity or dense outpourings. The works on this programme are representative of the recent evolution in his work, especially the piano concerto, Reflecting Black, written in homage to the painter Pierre Soulages and magnificently served in this recording by pianist David Lively.

Hard bop trumpeter Blue Mitchell recorded The Thing To Do in 1964 for Blue Note, his first for the label as leader, accompanied by a young Chick Corea on piano at the very beginning of his professional career. Corea even contributes the album’s closing number, Chick’s Tune. Tenor saxophonist Junior Cook joins Mitchell on the front line, backed by bassist Gene Taylor and drummer Al Foster.

This Blue Mitchell date is a classic, particularly the opening “Fungii Mama,” which is really catchy. The trumpeter’s quintet of the period (which includes tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, the young pianist Chick Corea, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer Al Foster) also performs two Jimmy Heath tunes and a song apiece by Joe Henderson (“Step Lightly”) and Corea. The record is prime Blue Note hard bop, containing inventive tunes, meaningful solos, and an enthusiastic but tight feel. Highly recommended.

Recorded: Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, 19 & 20 June 1979

Perlman, Mstislav Rostropovich and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink and recorded in the renowned acoustic of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw: this interpretation of Brahms’s imposing, but warm-hearted Double Concerto could not fail to be both powerful and sincere.

Itzhak Perlman and Mstislav Rostropovich made only one official recording together, and leaving aside one live, in all probability pirate version of Brahms’s Double Concerto, we have no other recorded testimony of a collaboration between these two giants. Which makes this recording all the more special, with Bernard Haitink conducting the splendid Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, with which Perlman would only collaborate one more time in the recording studio (volume 33). Brahms, though doubtless unaware of the fact at the time, was effectively composing his symphonic swansong with his Op.102. Of the twenty-odd works that he would go on to write before his death, only those for piano, voice or chamber ensemble would truly express the inmost distillation of his musical thought. Although commonplace in the Baroque era, concertos for several soloists were very rare by the Romantic period. Brahms was recalling the tradition of the concerto grosso, which Haydn and Mozart had already reinterpreted in their sinfonie concertanti, as had Beethoven in his Triple Concerto. “And now I must tell you about my latest folly,” Brahms had written to his publisher Simrock, “a concerto for violin and cello! My relationship with Joachim meant that I wanted to give up on the idea — but I couldn’t. Luckily we’ve always remained on good terms artistically; but I’d never have believed we would come face to face again.” Joseph Joachim it was of course who received the concerto’s dedication as a gesture of reconciliation and who gave its first public performance, with the cellist Robert Hausmann, in Cologne on 18 October 1887. Some of the twentieth century’s greatest artists joined forces to record this concerto, with the versions set down by Thibaud and Casals (1929), Heifetz and Feuermann (1939), Milstein and Piatigorsky (1951), Stern and Rose (1959 and 1964) and perhaps especially Oistrakh and Rostropovich all living long in the collective memory. “Slava” alone could boast two studio recordings (with Oistrakh in 1969, then this disc with Perlman in 1979) and four live in concert (with Gutnikov in 1963, Menuhin in 1964, Oistrakh in 1965 and Perlman in 1967). As for Perlman, he would only revisit this masterwork once, in 1992, with Yo-Yo Ma (volume 55). –Jean-Michel Molkhou

The Artemis Quartet pairs Brahms’ intense First Quartet with his lighter-spirited Third Quartet, both works that the Artemis’ cellist, Eckart Runge, describes as “remarkable and multi-faceted”. He says that “Brahms marries a Romantic spirit with the structure and forms of Classicism. There is an almost symphonic approach in the writing, but at the same time the quartets are imbued with a sense of warmth, immediacy, friendship and love that is interwoven with a more spiritual, timeless beauty”.

“As the excellent German group the Artemis remind us, the C minor is the composer at his most compelling and passionate, with complex, pulsating cross-rhythms, daring changes of key and expressive melodies. The later, more playful B flat also receives a fine performance, at once dynamic and subtly flexible.” –The Sunday Times

What a wonderful start: a fragmented melody like a hovering leaf blown up and down by the wind. Never has tenderness been composed more movingly. And what a magnificant ending of the same movement: extreme tenderness is matched by extreme drama which grows and grows to gigantic expression. Brahms is not restrained anymore in his last symphony. After the fun and vitality of the third movement the final passacaglia is much more than a sequence of variations. We experience a huge range of dark emotions: from the lonely lamentation of the flute to the defiant, tragic ending. There is no room for the usual jubilation or the usual modulation to a major key. Brahms finishes his symphonic work with prophetic foreboding heralding Spengler’s Der Untergang des Abendlandes (The Decline of the West). –Iván Fischer

As Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra progress through the symphonies of Johannes Brahms, one album at a time, the makings of a box set are becoming apparent. Not only has Fischer covered the First, Second, and now the Fourth, but the filler pieces have included the Variations on a Theme of Haydn, the Tragic Overture, the Academic Festival Overture, and assorted Hungarian Dances, giving this series the required selections for a deluxe reissue. Like the earlier recordings, the Fourth is expertly played in a mainstream interpretation, and the sound of the orchestra is rich and vibrant, sure to attract listeners who like their Brahms to have a traditional feeling. Fischer clearly communicates the intellectual and emotional sides of the symphony, and he inspires the orchestra to play with transparent textures, crisp details, and passionate intensity, producing an ideal combination. The sound of this hybrid SACD is superb, and Channel Classics’ multichannel recording gives the orchestra credible presence and plenty of room to breathe. Highly recommended. –AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson

On this 2011 tribute album, Brian Wilson covers 75 years of music from Disney films, reaching all the way back to 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The recording marries the vision of two men who shaped the image of modern California: Wilson and Walt Disney.

Just 15 months after Brian Wilson released his tribute to the music of George Gershwin, out popped another tribute album – this one saluting the 75 years of original songs from the feature films of Walt Disney. Granted, this tribute is even more natural than Gershwin, since Wilson grew up just minutes away from Disneyland, and as a child of the ’50s, had probably memorized perennials like “Whistle While You Work” and “When You Wish Upon a Star” before he ever considered writing songs about surfing. (Not to mention the fact that his Gershwin tribute actually came out on one of Disney’s labels, as does this one.) Despite the natural feel of these songs as sung by Wilson and performed by his talented backing band, anyone who’s paid attention to his solo career of the ’90s and 2000s won’t hear any surprises: there’s the straight Phil Spector homage (“Kiss the Girl,” from The Little Mermaid), several forced and hammy straight-ahead rockers (such as “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” written by Wilson’s friend Randy Newman for Toy Story), and the occasional stroke of magic, like the could’ve-been-a-prime-Beach-Boys ballad “Baby Mine” (Dumbo) or the stunning harmonies that open “When You Wish Upon a Star” (Pinocchio). Fans of pop music or Wilson’s special brand of production magic will especially enjoy the arrangements, like the marimbas and banjo playing on “The Bare Necessities,” or the assortment of intriguing voicings from all manner of slightly exotic instruments (B-3, Moog, 12-string guitar and electric 12-string guitar, wooden flute, piccolo, musical saw, etc.). Wilson and fellow musical arranger Paul Von Mertens are at their best on the ballads, including “When You Wish Upon a Star,” as well as the Mary Poppins chestnut “Stay Awake.”
