This new album from renowned British pianist William Howard features sixteen world premiere recordings from composers such as Judith Weir, Nico Muhly and Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry. Entitled Sixteen Contemporary Love Songs, the album marks the next step in William’s two-year Love Songs project, which explores the theme of love in romantic and contemporary piano music.

William contacted leading composers around the world with a simple brief: to write a piece of music for solo piano that explores the theme of love. The resulting Sixteen Contemporary Love Songs celebrate love in all its forms and provide a unique insight into the modern composer’s response to the love song genre.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:10:29 minutes | 1,24 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Naxos

The tapestry of drama, refinement and expressive lyricism in Dag Wirén’s four string quartets (the First Quartet was withdrawn) provides a substantial overview of his musical evolution over 35 years. His earlier works are more accessible than challenging, as demonstrated by the relaxed and affirmative Second and Third Quartets. The Fourth Quartet is more sombre, with nods towards Sibelius and Shostakovich, and in the Fifth, completed not long before Wirén’s retirement as a composer, the easy confidence of the earlier quartets has been replaced by a mood of pessimism and uncertainty.

“Of Dag Wirén’s seven string quartets, only four appear on this 2005 release on Daphne. If these lightweight and weakly imagined works are representative of the complete oeuvre – and it appears that Wirén approved only these for performance – then the rejected quartets are probably nothing to grieve over. For lack of a better term, Wirén’s string quartets may be described as conservatively neo-Classical, chiefly for the dutiful observance of traditional forms and the regular development of themes along sonata lines. Yet it seems reasonable to regard them as academic exercises, rather than as major artistic statements, that lag behind the vanguard of their respective time periods. The String Quartet No. 2, Op. 9 (1935), is accessible and folk-like in its rugged dance rhythms and simple melodies, and the String Quartet No. 3, Op. 18 (1941-1945), is similarly buoyed by its lively tunes and pulsing, repetitive patterns. The String Quartet No. 4, Op. 28 (1952-1953), and the String Quartet No. 5, Op. 41 (1970), are somewhat more advanced in the use of dissonant counterpoint, special string effects, chromatic harmonies, and expanded tonal possibilities; but Wirén’s tendency to balance his phrases at every turn and his excessive reliance on sequences make his music seem hidebound, formulaic, and stiff. One wishes for the introduction of odd meters, interruptions of melodies, startling mood changes, or anything quirky or unexpected to break up the excessively logical, predictable writing in these pieces, and to lift the music out of its tedious regularity. The Lysell Quartet brings considerable energy and expressive warmth to these lackluster compositions, and Daphne’s sound quality is good, if not extraordinary. But this disc offers little of interest to serious students of the modern string quartet, and may appeal most to seekers of mid-twentieth century obscurities.” (Blair Sanderson, AMG)

Bringing together pianist Brad Mehldau, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, double bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade isn’t an easy thing to do. But Wolfgang Muthspiel succeeded in 2016 on his album Rising Grace. A worthy heir to Mick Goodrick and Pat Metheny, the Austrian guitarist was wise enough to think of his album as a unified quintet rather than a fleeting all-star album. The style of jazz used in Rising Grace, which is demanding both in its form and its technique, is once again at the heart of Where The River Goes. This new album includes the same names but with Eric Harland on drums, replacing Blade. Muthspiel’s group is impressive: the lyricism is as fine as ever, the cohesion is perfect and the phrasing of the solos is precise. On top of all this the guitarist composes for the rest of the gang too. He gives them freedom and never tries to be the gang leader…  – Marc Zisman

Following her acclaimed recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in 2016 (Editor’s Choice, Gramophone), Xiayin Wang here completes the trio with No. 1 and the posthumously published No. 3, alongside Scriabin’s only concerto.

Whether Tchaikovsky gave his consent to the virtuoso Alexander Ziloti to revise his Piano Concerto No. 1 is unknown, but Wang here presents the lesser-recorded original version. Piano Concerto No. 3 was originally begun as a symphony, all of which except the first movement was ultimately abandoned; that surviving movement was later completed as a single-movement concert work for piano and orchestra.

Scriabin finished his piano concerto in only a few days, although it took months to orchestrate it before the 1897 premiere. Sensitively played by Wang, the concerto shows a naïve charm that even Scriabin, at his most translucent, would struggle to recapture once his career got underway

For his first recording with Ricercar, and as a prelude to an anthology of German Baroque harpsichord music, Yoann Moulin tackles works by two of Sweelinck’s most illustrious disciples. The preludes, chorales, fugues, dances and arias with variations of this repertory offer great diversity and enable us to grasp the personalities of the two composers, the introverted Scheidt and the more flamboyant and Baroque Scheidemann.

Yuja Wang is one of the most technically astounding pianists of our time, with a command of the keyboard matched by sheer muscular strength. Here she turns her attention to Russia and some of its leading pianist-composers. The Rachmaninoff Preludes and Études-Tableaux are rich and swirl with passion, while Scriabin’s Tenth Sonata, a work of mystical imaginings, seethes with dangerous life under her fingers. Briefly looking further afield, a group of Hungarian composer György Ligeti’s tiny Études diverts the attention magically before Prokofiev’s Eighth Piano Sonata, his masterpiece in the form, which Wang characterizes with genuine originality and imagination.

Haydn and Mozart’s music for organ and drums: Haydn to Leopold Mozart: “I tell you as God is my witness, and as an honest man, your son is the greatest composer known to me by person and repute, he has taste, and, furthermore, the most profound knowledge of composition.” Mozart about Joseph Haydn: “He alone has the secret of making me smile and touching me in the depths of my soul.”

“To my eyes and my ears, the organ is the king of instruments”, Mozart said. From his earliest age, Wolfgang Amadeus played Europe’s most prestigious organs, accompanied by his father: Heidelberg, Mannheim, Ghent, Antwerp, Haarlem, Verona, Bologna, Versailles… Everywhere he went, Wolfgang’s playing evoked astonishment and admiration. It even seems that he coveted the position of the organist of the Royal Chapel of Versailles, without success. Afterwards, Mozart devoted himself to other musical activities, without really having composed pieces for a church organ

The #1 French singer in the world, ZAZ, announced a new studio album, Effet Miroir, comprised entirely of original songs. Combining elements of chanson, South American guitars, pop, salsa and rock, Effet Miroir is an album of hope that is testament to the beliefs of ZAZ.

Meanwhile, Zaz has also released the album’s first single, “Qué vendra” which is sung in both French and Spanish, and is about taking life as it comes and having no regrets. In ZAZ’s words: “To me this song is like a walk on the paths of life. The title echoes those last eight years I’ve spent on the road performing around the world, reminding me of all those encounters and learnings that ensued.”

On “Effet Miroir” – recorded between Paris, Brussels and Montreal – ZAZ hopes listeners can find and recognize themselves: “To accept all our facets with their paradoxes is for me, a way to unite the polarities of our being” ZAZ says. The album serves as an illustration of several faces and genres, just like the diversity of humanity that she had the opportunity to observe and appreciate for several years on the road, in concert or elsewhere”.

Following its highly acclaimed album featuring the three most richly scored Ouvertures(Gramophone Editor͛s Choice – shortlisted for the 2017 Gramophone Awards and included among the Top 10 recent Bach recordings), Zefiro comes full circle with the famous collection of Concerts avec plusieurs instruments, that kaleidoscope of colours that seems almost tailor-made to highlight the salient qualities of the ensemble founded by the three historical wind specialists Alfredo Bernardini, Paolo and Alberto Grazzi. Thanks to experience gained in countless performances and recordings with the leading conductors and ensembles, but also to thorough research into the most appropriate instruments and pitch (398 Hz, i.e. the ‘authentic’ French pitch), this brand new recording exudes liveliness, flair and knowledge, and features some of the greatest names on the Baroque music scene, among them Cecilia Bernardini, Gabriele Cassone, Francesco Corti, Lorenz Duftschmid, Marcello Gatti, Gaetano Nasillo and Dorothee Oberlinger. Also included is the more intimate B minor Suite with flute (BWV 1067), thus filling the gap left by the earlier recording.

This live release is a fresh, energetic and unique approach to jazz standards and songs from other genres, recorded with legendary musicians from the US. Jazz vocalist Simone Kopmajer gathered a team of Terry Myers, Ron Teixeira, Rabbit Simmons and Reinhardt Winkler to compile an album of jazz favorites. She puts her spin on John Lennon’s “Imagine” and includes the jazz standard “Tea For Two”.

Daughter of a family of Austrian musicians, Simone Kopmajer began singing with her father’s band and studying piano and voice at age twelve. Over the last years, she rose up through the various systems of support for jazz in Europe – talent competitions, officially-subsized orchestras and festivals. She studied formally in Graz, Austria, where two of the foremost jazz vocal educators, Mark Murphy and Sheila Jordan, have long-term teaching residencies, made her US debut in 2000, and has worked all over the world. Simone has worked with jazz giants such as George Mraz, Houston Person, Dick Oatts, John di Martino, Victor Lewis, James Genus,… and has played at well known Jazz Festival all over the world.

Face The Music is the new album from Sinne Eeg. Sinne is one of the strongest new female vocalists from the Scandinavian jazz scene. With 5 albums Sinne Eeg has established herself as a Danish jazz singer with international potential. Sinne’s distinctive vocals have earned her a loyal and ever growing fan base around the world as well as in her native country. As a singer she is influenced by Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, but with her personal touch of soft darkness, Sinne keeps the Scandinavian melancholy settled in her music.

Whenever Denmark’s leading jazz vocalist, Sinne Eeg records, she always has a handful of new original songs with her. Sinne Eeg doesn’t write “compositions” – she writes catchy songs that could easily find their way into the more commercial branches of the music business. Listen to The Best I Ever Had, which is a truly wonderful song. Natives of Copenhagen not only have the privilege of sharing their city with one of Europe’s finest jazz singers, but also one of its brightest songwriting talents. FACE THE MUSIC features songs with finely facetted themes, arranged and performed to perfection by Sinne Eeg and her favorite trio, pianist Jacob Christoffersen, bassist Morten Ramsbøll and drummer Morten Lund.

Slávka Pěchočová – Schumann & Chopin (2011)
SACD Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & 5.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 71:16 minutes | Scans NOT included | 3,9 GB

Slávka Pěchočová s playing reflects the rigor of her first teacher, Martin Hrsel, and the almost Impressionistic expressiveness of her second, the famous Ivan Moravec. Here she performs Robert Schumann’s Carnaval and a selection of works by Frédéric Chopin, including the Ballade No.3, Nocturne No.13, Scherzo No.4 and the Fantaisie Op.49. All are animated by her lively, naturally virtuosic style. This program represents the very essence of the Romantic piano.

An improbable series of portraits/masks and Carnival scenes, animated by a Czech pianist who imposes a lively, naturally virtuoso style but without vain outpourings and languor that would denature these pieces from 1843-46, the very essence of the Romantic piano, alongside Liszt.

After graduating from the conservatory in Pardubice under the guidance of Martin Hršel, Slávka Pěchočová studied with Ivan Moravec. She also participated in master classes given by Nelly Akopian and, in 2002 completed the graduate programme at the Royal College of Music in London. Pěchočová has played with various orchestras, at home and abroad, conducted by Libor Pešek, Jiří Bělohlávek, Martin Turnovský, Jakub Hrůša, et al. In the summer of 2009 she was a guest soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London during the Proms. Pěchočová also pursues chamber music: she plays in the Spring duo and the Kinsky Trio Prague. Her 2010 recording of Janáček for Praga Digitals was enthusiastically received.

Sonny Rollins made his debut for the Riverside label with this album, recorded and released in 1957, the same year he was named New Star of the tenor saxophone by the critics of DownBeat. Rollins is surrounded by top names, including pianist Sonny Clark, bassists Percy Heath and Paul Chambers and drummer Roy Haynes on a programme of covers and standards, with one original Rollins song.

A new phase in Sonny Rollins’ career began in 1957. He started what was at the time an almost blasphemous trend of recording for a number of different labels. His pioneering spirit yielded a few genre-defining albums, including this disc. His performances were also at a peak during 1957 as Down Beat magazine proclaimed him the Critics’ Poll winner under the category of “New Star” of the tenor saxophone. This newfound freedom can be heard throughout the innovations on The Sound of Sonny. Not only are Rollins’ fluid solos reaching newly obtained zeniths of melodic brilliance, but he has also begun experimenting with alterations in the personnel from tune to tune. Most evident on this platter is “The Last Time I Saw Paris” – which is piano-less – and most stunning of all is Rollins’ unaccompanied tenor solo performance on “It Could Happen to You.” Indeed, this rendering of the Jimmy Van Heusen standard is the highlight of the disc. That isn’t to say that the interaction between Sonny Clark (piano), Roy Haynes (drums), and bassists Percy Heath and Paul Chambers – who is featured on “The Last Time I Saw Paris” and “What Is There to Say” – is not top-shelf. Arguably, it is Rollins and Heath – the latter, incidentally, makes his East Coast debut on this album – who set the ambience for The Sound of Sonny. There is an instinctually pervasive nature as they weave into and back out of each others’ melody lines, only to emerge with a solo that liberates the structure of the mostly pop standards. This is a key component in understanding the multiplicities beginning to surface in Rollins’ highly underappreciated smooth bop style.

Stanley Newcomb Kenton was an American popular music and jazz artist. As a pianist, composer, arranger and band leader, he led an innovative and influential jazz orchestra garnering many successes across several music genres. Though Kenton was to have several pop hits from the early 1940s into the 1960s, much like earlier band leader Paul Whiteman, he categorized his music as forward looking, or “progressive jazz”. He was also on the cutting edge of jazz education in creating the Stan Kenton Band Clinics starting in the late 1950s.
