Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 6 – Budapest Festival Orchestra, Ivan Fischer (2006)
DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz | Time – 01:18:19 minutes | 3,11 GB | Genre: Classical

Recorded: Palace of Arts, Budapest, February 2005

After the dress rehearsal, Mahler paced back and forth in the greenroom, wringing his hands and sobbing. He was beside himself. In the last movement he had let his ‘hero’ be killed by three violent blows of fate, a sort of Old Testament prophecy of the destruction of humanity by a higher power. In the score he symbolically notated three dull thuds made by a hammer on a wooden box which he had had especially built. But after the premiere he removed the third blow in measure 783. And as a symbol of the last remains of earthly existence he brought in the characteristic sound of cowbells, the last sounds which echo from the valleys and meadows on the highest summits of the world. They were meant to sum up the whole of human experience, from childlike innocence and wonder to fury, despair, and destruction. His Sixth Symphony is the most merciless and uncompromising portrayal of this vision….

Fischer’s performance of the Sixth is quite similar to Abbado’s recent live recording for DG. Textures are generally light and transparent, with a swift opening march that, by the same token, never sounds unduly rushed or trivialized. The andante comes second, not the best option in my view, but Fischer has the intelligence to treat it as a true andante, and not as an adagio (which is a more legitimate possibility when it’s placed third). However, in contrast to Abbado’s boring Berliners, Fischer’s orchestra plays better, and he’s much better recorded. Just listen to the characterful brass in the coda of the first movement, with a particularly fine first trumpet, or the splendid woodwinds in the trios of the scherzo. The emphasis on fleetness never compromises expressivity, as happens in Berlin.
Fischer also has a keen ear for Mahler’s special effects: the cowbells tinkle evocatively, and the offstage chimes are perfectly balanced at the start of the finale, even if the passage isn’t the unforgettable dream of terror that Bernstein makes of it. Best of all, the finale is terrific, as it must be in any performance of this work. It has the necessary weight, with imposing brass playing and aptly dark, heavy, but potent hammer blows. Fischer also times each return to the movement’s introduction especially well, knitting together the movement’s various episodes with unerring skill. The entire recapitulation and coda are masterfully paced, with excellent contributions from all sections.
The performance that this one resembles most in its unaffected musicality is Kubelik’s, though both in stereo or 5.0 multichannel sound the engineering here is incomparably finer. In sum, this is a rendition surprisingly easy on the ear, but one that achieves this quality without making too many expressive compromises along the way. It also fits neatly onto a single disc. You should certainly own a performance of this symphony a bit darker and more frightening (Bernstein’s or Gielen’s will do), but for a legitimate alternative viewpoint you will find it difficult to do better than this. –David Hurwitz, Classics Today.com

Recorded: Studio Ferber, Paris, France

Manu Katché returns with a new studio album, ‘Unstatic’, for an enhanced formation of a bassist, Ellen Andrea Wang. We know the importance Manu Katché places with each of the bass players he has collaborated with. This is also clearly a return to basics, since the role of the bass was not entrusted to a specialist of the instrument but to the organ of Jim Watson during his two previous records !
The material on “Unstatic” is comprised of eleven originals written by the leader, all of them played in what has now become familiar as the ‘Manu Katche style’. Katche’s way with a groove and ear for a good tune remain undimmed and the core group sound is expanded by the presence of guest trombonist Nils Landgren who appears on five tracks.
Landgren features on the opening track, simply titled “Introduccion”, a seductive rhumba that finds Katche working in harness with no fewer than three guest percussionists in the shapes of Abraham Rodriguez Mansfarroll, Joel Hiereezuelo Balart and Esteben Sotolongo Zapata. Landgren makes a significant contribution on trombone alongside Watson on acoustic piano.
Emmanuel Manu Katches family roots can be traced back to Africas Ivory Coast, although he was born near Paris. He began his musical education at the age of five when he began piano lessons, but he switched to percussion at 14. Katche studied classical percussion at the Conservatoire National Superieure de Musique de Paris. After his graduation, he began to develop his own unique style, grounded in jazz and his African roots. This release, in contrast to his 2014 quartet album, includes double bassist Ellen Andrea Wang. The addition of this timbre creates an incredible soundscape. The eleven titles on this release were all written by Katche, proving his skill as a composer.
„Something of a return to form by Manu Katché. His music may be relatively undemanding but it’s far from vacuous and there’s some excellent writing and playing throughout this album.“

„Contemporary musicians don’t come much more graceful in sound or execution than Manu Katché, the French drummer/composer who has lent his unhurried elan to everyone from Peter Gabriel and Sting to Youssou N’Dour and Jan Garbarek. Unstatic is a more vividly varied set than his current jazz group’s 2012 debut, adding the pop awareness of young Norwegian bassist/vocalist Ellen Andrea Wang, and with Swedish jazz and funk trombonist Nils Landgren guesting. Katche is a gifted mixer of catchy idioms and improv surprises, defined from the off in the intro’s delightful, languidly snappy rhumba. Saxist Tore Brunborg and Arve Henriksen-like trumpeter Luca Aquino make an atmospheric horn pairing, and in funkier moods the band resembles a laid-back Headhunters, their striking themes spawning provocative new riffs as they develop. Brunborg brings a soul-sax rootsiness, and UK keyboardist Jim Watson is a constant spur, notably in his Fender Rhodes solo and the churning undertow of the hustling, uninhibited Ride Me Up. Warm, inviting, effortlessly skilful world-jazz.“ –John Fordham, The Guardian

“One of the most important voices of our time,” is how the young French mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa is described by Marc Minkowski, the distinguished conductor for her debut album, Oh, Boy! Comprising arias for young male characters who are sung by a woman – the so-called ‘trouser roles’ – it offers an alluring programme of Mozart, Chabrier, Gluck, Gounod, Hahn, Massenet, Meyerbeer, Offenbach and Thomas. Crebassa – praised by Le Monde for her “incredibly beautiful timbre and transcendent presence” – shows why she has already made an impact at the Paris Opéra, La Scala, Milan, the Berlin Staatsoper and the Salzburg Festival.
When she sang at the Salzburg Festival in 2014, the Financial Times described Crebassa as “dazzling … with doe-eyed looks, the seductive innocence of Debussy’s Mélisande and a luscious voice that seems destined for Massenet’s Charlotte.” The New York Times has hailed her as “splendidly charismatic” and Die Welt has praised her “evenly produced, shimmering timbre”. Shortly after she graduated from the Conservatory of Montpellier, not far from her hometown of Béziers in southern France, Forum Opéra described her voice as “opulent and perfectly projected,” singling her out as “an artist we are sure to hear more about.”

The deluxe set with the optical discs features a brand new stereo remix by Steven Wilson, the original 1994 mix by Dave Meegan, and two CDs of Live At La Cigale performance from ’94. The audio has been newly remixed by Michael Hunter, and features a performance of Brave in its entirety. This is now the complete performance as it has been expanded with nine unreleased tracks

Rebounding from the inconsistent Holidays in Eden, Marillion retreated to the studio for 15 months to write and record the concept album Brave. Telling the story of an abused girl wandering on Severn Bridge, the album is a solid mix of symphonic tracks with a pronounced rock edge. A band known for trilogies, the final set of “The Great Escape,” “The Last of You,” and “Falling From the Moon” form one of the most dynamic showcases for vocalist Steve Hogarth and guitarist Steve Rothery. Brave remains the most complex Marillion release to date, with layers and layers of sound. A full-length movie of Brave, directed by Richard Stanley, was released in Europe in conjunction with the album.

It’s been three years since Marmozets first broke through with their debut album, but now they add to their growing momentum with the news that their long-awaited second album ‘Knowing What You Know Now’ will be released on JANUARY 26TH. Recorded with the legendary producer GIL NORTON (Foo Fighters, Pixies), it’s the band’s most ambitious and accomplished offering to date. With tracks ‘Play’, the pounding ‘New Religion’, the pulse-quickening ‘Major System Error’ and the spiky ‘Lost In Translation’ Marmozets’ are embracing a new intensity within their controlled chaos, the band have the courage to explore fresh territory too. A stark and sombre standout is ‘Me & You’ – its sparse arrangement befitting the raw sentiment of the song. It was inspired by the death of the MacIntyres’ beloved grandmother, who was always an enthusiastic supporter of the band. Another departure comes with ‘Run With The Rhythm’, an epic head rush of a track that was chosen to close the album because of its message of encouragement. MARMOZETS consist of two sets of siblings, the MacIntyres (Becca, Sam and drummer Josh) and the Bottomleys (lead guitarist Jack and bassist Will). Prepare to get to know the most exciting record of 2018.

Trumpet player Martti Vesala clearly loves the jazz of the 60s and 70s – melodic without being too easy, funky and yet relaxed, filled to the brim with gripping grooves and ripping solos. Little wonder, then, that legendary jazz publication Downbeat recently compared him to Miles Davis. And yet, thanks to Vesala’s drive, passion and virtuosity “Stars Aligned” feels perfectly contemporary.

Martti Vesala Soundpost Quintet is a jazz ensemble formed in 2011 and is comprised of five young and talented jazz musicians from Helsinki, Finland. The instantly recognisable production of ‘Stars Aligned’, somewhere between vintage and entirely contemporary sound design, was sculpted by star producer Miikka Huttunen, highly respected for a string of successful Finnish releases from pop to jazz. Astoundingly, all eight minutely detailed arrangements of the album were taped in a mere three days: The title track with its emotionally ambivalent Leitmotiv and utopian harmonies; experimental study “Murky Green”; and, last but not least, beat-driven pieces like “Driving Force” or “A Murder of Crows”, which, with their casually swinging bass-and-drum-loops, are reminiscent of David Holme’s classic soundtrack for blockbuster Ocean’s Eleven.

Swedish pianist Mattias Risberg demonstrates the passion he dedicates to vintage instruments like mellotron, Hammond organ, analog synthesizers, clavichord and pipe organs, here in a solo album of piano, with some light preparations, and the pedals of a Moog Taurus, in an inventive album of improvisations inspired by the vivid images of postage stamps.

If you’re a fan of Carla Bley you already know Mattias Risberg: together with saxophonist Fredrik Ljungkvist he released the album And Now the Queen – A Tribute to Carla Bley (2016). Something you could expect from the keyboardist Risberg whose musical interests are deeply rooted in several music idioms, going from John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Jan Johansson and Paul Bley to J.S. Bach, Carlo Gesualdo, Igor Stravinskij and Olivier Messiaen, through the likes of John Lennon, Frank Zappa, early Genesis and Yes.

While Risberg is known for the passion he dedicates to vintage instruments like mellotron, Hammond organ, analog synthesizers, clavichord and even pipe organs, in “STAMPS” he focuses only on the piano, now and then prepared, with the sole aid of some Moog Taurus pedals. And he does it alone, in the solo format.

During the working process Risberg was reminded of his youth, how he “created” inner rooms, guided by music, books, paintings, nature. And by his small collection of stamps. The best way to return to that youthful state of mind was to improvise, as is shown in Stamps, which is the result of those six weeks of spontaneous recordings without script or overdubs. Musically you recognize all the references mentioned above, crossing stylistic borders but also recovering the inspiration of other art forms, the literary one included. Yes, there’s a bit of James Joyce and Paul Klee here for you to find in the inner and outer environments of “STAMPS”.

Recorded live in DSD128fs at the Barbican Hall, 23rd March 2014 & 16th February 2016

Constantly in the vanguard of enlightened interpretation, Sir John Eliot Gardiner stands as a leader in today’s musical life. His award-winning Mendelssohn cycle on LSO Live showcases his period performance expertise, the musicians standing to play, highlighting their individual musicianship. As Gardiner explains: ‘It gives a different type of dynamism and energy… it means that the fiddles are freer in the way that they attack the extremely virtuosic lines and it gives a tremendous sense of occasion to the music making.’
Dramatic and harmonically adventurous, Mendelssohn’s First Symphony is presented here in an exceptionally unique format, with both the original and revised versions of the third movement. As Gardiner said when introducing the work in concert:
‘It’s not every evening that you get to hear a symphony by a fourteen-and-a-half year-old genius and there’s an intriguing complication to this piece. When Mendelssohn came to London in 1829, he performed the symphony and he wrote back to his parents saying: “well, I looked over my symphony and, lord, the minuet bored me to tears! So what I did was to take the scherzo from my Octet and I added a few airy trumpets and it sounded lovely.” Well, actually he did an awful lot more than that; he re-orchestrated absolutely brilliantly. And it’s so good, we thought you should hear that version. But what about the minuet and trio? Why, when he came to publish the symphony did he use that version and leave out the scherzo? I happen to think they’re both really remarkable, as is the whole symphony, and perhaps you’d let us know which you prefer…?’
The Fourth Symphony is inspired by the sights, sounds and atmosphere of Italy and is among the best loved of all the composer’s works. Mendelssohn described it as: ‘the jolliest piece I’ve written so far.’ John Eliot Gardiner says of the work: ‘Mendelssohn threw everything, in terms of virtuosity and risk-taking, at the Italian Symphony and it’s remained incredibly popular…

The Op 35 set of Preludes and Fugues is the most substantial single opus Mendelssohn wrote for solo piano, a mark of his reverence for the mighty Bach. Coupled with the popular fifth book of Songs without Words, we have here a heavyweight fourth volume in Howard Shelley’s compendium.

As Howard Shelley reaches the fourth instalment of his solo Mendelssohn journey, familiar and unfamiliar once again rub shoulders. He brings out the Bachian elements in the Op 35 Preludes and Fugues—notably the twisting subject of the First Fugue or the agitated Third Fugue—with total naturalness, while the Prestissimo staccato of the Third Prelude is exactly that. The Fugue of the Fifth dances with due clarity, contrasting very effectively with the song-without-words Sixth Prelude.
You’d be forgiven for doing a double-take at the start of the Andante cantabile e Presto agitato, which is a first cousin to the familiar Andante and Rondo capriccioso. Shelley makes a strong case for it, finding particular poignancy in the recollection of the theme’s first three notes as a dying echo at the close, while the Presto is supple and airborne. After that, an A major Lied, a lilting and highly personal piece penned while the composer was on honeymoon.
We’re back on more familiar territory in the Fifth Book of Songs Without Words. In the first Song, Shelley finds a middle ground between the recent Kirschnereit and the faster-flowing Barenboim. To my mind the second is a tad slow in Shelley’s hands—at least compared to the high jinks of Barenboim and the airily wondrous Perahia—though the E minor number that follows is particularly absorbing. The popular ‘Gondolier Song’ of the fifth poses the question: how con moto do you want your Andante to be? Shelley and Perianes tend towards the dreamy—here Kirschnereit’s faster tempo seems more apt. And in the famous ‘Spring Song’ that closes the set, Shelley is finely detailed yet others find an even greater sense of carefree rapture. All in all, though, a fascinating recital, warmly recorded and with absorbing notes from Mendelssohn scholar R Larry Todd. –Harriet Smith, Gramophone

Long out of print for nearly 30-years, the classic 1987 EP The $5.98 EP – Garage Days Re-Revisited has returned! This five-song limited edition cassette was remastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, Hollywood, CA.

Following Cliff Burton’s death, Metallica took some time off and initiated new bassist Jason Newsted with a raw, unpolished EP of covers originally recorded by Diamond Head, Holocaust, Killing Joke, Budgie, and the Misfits. Most fit the band’s style quite well; only “Last Caress” sounds out of place, as the original seemed looser and more dangerous. As a showcase for some strong metal riffs and material by mostly underground bands, the EP works quite well.

Tracklist:

02 – The Small Hours
03 – The Wait
04 – Crash Course in Brain Surgery
05 – Last Caress / Green Hell

Michael Wollny’s trio album Weltentraum and his 2014 tour of Germany have been the highlights of his career to date. Weltentraum garnered praise and acknowledgement from national and international critics, including a cover story in Jazzwise which named it Album of the Year and a four star review in DownBeat. It was also Wollny’s commercial breakthrough and set the stage for the wildly successful German shows. This performance was recorded in March 2014 at the Philharmonie Berlin and captures the energy and excitement audiences felt during the tour.

Ten years have passed now since our first meeting. Michael Wollny received pretty much every music award that our country can bestow on creative artists. In addition to his twelve albums (including the [em] albums and the four with Heinz Sauer) he has participated in eight further ACT productions to date. He has become a creative pillar of the ACT family, and has grown personally very dear to my heart.

And the recent album ‘Weltentraum’ not only garnered more acknowledgement from the national and international critics (including a cover story in „Jazzwise“ (UK) and four stars in the legendary US magazine ‘Downbeat’), it was also the commercial breakthrough. No other jazz album by a German pianist had ever made it into the Top 50 of the pop charts before. The German Jazz Award was accomplished in just two months. Karsten Jahnke’s fantastic ‘Jazznights’ tour did the rest. In front of a massive audience the trio once again took its music to new heights, and after its unfathomable concert in Munich I spontaneously decided to make a live recording in the special atmosphere of the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie. It proved to be a good idea, because in this concert, too, the mop-top on the piano, together with his congenial partners Tim Lefebvre on bass and Eric Schaefer on drums, got the house jumping. ‘Weltentraum – Live’ is the living proof.

Although best remembered for her role as matriarch Karen Fairgate MacKenzie on the long-running prime-time soap opera Knots Landing, Michele Lee also enjoyed a career as a recording artist during the late ’60s, scoring a minor pop hit with 1968’s “L. David Sloane.” Born Michelle Lee Dusick in Los Angeles on June 24, 1942, she was the daughter of Hollywood makeup artist Jack Dusick. By age three she was singing professionally, and made her television debut in a 1959 episode of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. In 1961 Lee co-starred in the Broadway smash How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, later reprising her role as Rosemary in the 1967 feature film version. By 1963, she was a regular television presence, appearing on The Danny Kaye Show, What’s My Line, and Match Game. Following successful nightclub appearances at venues including New York City’s Persian Room and Las Vegas’ Sands Hotel, Lee signed to Columbia Records to release her 1967 debut LP, A Taste of the Fantastic. L. David Sloane followed a year later, coinciding with her co-starring role in the Disney blockbuster The Love Bug. After 1969’s feature The Comic, Lee returned to television, guesting on series including Love American Style and Marcus Welby M.D. In 1974, she also headlined her own failed sitcom pilot, The Michele Lee Show, and earned Tony Award nomination for her work in the Broadway production Seesaw. After the 1976 death of her mother, Lee withdrew from the spotlight for several years before resurfacing in 1979 on the Dallas spinoff Knots Landing. She remained with the series throughout its 14-season network run, setting the record for the most consecutive appearances by an actress in a prime-time dramatic series with 344. By the 1989 season Lee was occasionally directing episodes of Knots Landing as well, and after playing the title role in the 1995 telefilm Big Dreams and Broken Hearts: The Dottie West Story, she co-wrote and directed the 1996 Lifetime production Color Me Perfect. Lee returned to Broadway in the 2000 production Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, and four years later appeared in the romantic comedy Along Came Polly, her first feature film work in 35 years. –Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny

There are projects that take time to mature, in this time is relative, a life can change in a moment, take you by other ways, the trip lasts what has to last, a few days, a few weeks, months, years, maybe more. In this sense, the case of El Cubista by Miguel Chuck Rodríguez is exemplary, a trip of fifteen years. Music has different ways of reaching our roots, sometimes visiting us in surprising coordinates. The Chuck is an electric bear all delivery and dedication.

In 1990 Miguel Chuck Rodriguez began to study music. He graduated from the Escuela Libre de Música with a contrabass degree in 1998. He studied with Rich Appleman, coordinator of the Bass department at the Berklee College of Music, when he did a stay in Mexico (Xalapa, Veracruz, 1998). Marc Berthoumieux, Osmany Paredes, Damien Schmitt, Jeff Cof n, Tom Coster, Gabriel Hernández, Hans Tammen, Ursel Urslicht, Dave Turner y Ollan Christopher Bell. Rising-star clarinetist/saxophonist/composer Mike McGinnis couldn’t have had better associates to develop his musicality than pianist Art Lande and electric bassist Steve Swallow, whose experience and distinct styles provide an elegant carpet for his strides. “Singular Awakening” is the natural follow-up to last year’s “Recurring Dream”. The album comprises twelve tracks, eight of them being improvised numbers, while the bassist and the pianist contribute with two compositions each.

The recording begins with a couple of composed pieces from Swallow and Lande to get the program off and running. Swallow’s “Here Comes Everybody” is a compact, jazzy piece that is fun and challenging to play, while Lande’s “Shining Lights” is a ruminating, folk-like piece that moves through sections and is dedicated to his students. The eight improvisations each have their own personality and style, showing the vastness of the collective’s comfort level regardless of genre or character. “Insist on Something Sometimes” is a laid back piano led dialog. The quietly introspective “A First Memory” shows incredible restraint, while the slightly more insistent “Mini’s Can-Do Club” highlights a special low-key swagger. “PolterGinnis” has the trio at their most esoteric and captivating. “O’Flaherty Decides to Play Jazz” has a slightly Celtic clarion clarinet and a winding rhythm section. Led by a pressing bass line, clarinet and piano weave around each other on the bluesy “Beau Nivea.” The appropriately named “Shockinawe” showcases the far ranges of McGinnis’s soprano saxophone and a pointillistic development. The singing tones of Swallow’s bass and floating piano are dramatic in their simplicity on “Slow Dance in a Whisper.” The program concludes with two more composed pieces. Lande’s lovely “For Elise” is an elegy to a friend’s stillborn baby, which is composed of three counterpoint parts working off each other until they extinguish. Throwing down the gauntlet, Swallow’s tricky “Bite Your Grandmother” closes with a bang. Mike McGinnis knew that he was putting something special together when he convened this trio with Art Lande and Steve Swallow. On their Singular Awakening, the trio shows their incredible capacity for fascinating, conversational group improvisation.

Recorded: May 29 – September 11, 1994

Ball-Hog or Tugboat? is the debut solo album by former Minutemen and fIREHOSE bassist, songwriter and vocalist Mike Watt. It was recorded in 1994, and came at a personal and professional career crossroads for Watt. fIREHOSE had broken up after eight years and six releases earlier in 1994, and his marriage to former Black Flag bassist Kira Roessler had ended in divorce (although both their friendship and their dual-bass project Dos continued; Kira also contributed some computer graphics to the album’s artwork).

For his first solo album, Mike Watt assembled a different band for each track, creating a veritable who’s who of post-punk and alternative rock — Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, Thurston Moore, J Mascis, Frank Black, Evan Dando, Dave Pirner, Henry Rollins, Flea, Lee Ranaldo, Mike D, and Pat Smear all appear, among others. Predictably, the sound is somewhat schizophrenic, but no more so than the average Minutemen album. Ball-Hog or Tugboat? is more polished than anything the Minutemen released, yet looser than fIREHOSE, filled with jazz-inflected breaks and sheer sonic freakouts, but dominated by a surprisingly large number of pop songs. On the power pop rush of “Piss-Bottle Man,” Dando sings with more emotion than on most Lemonheads records, and “Chinese Fire Drill” shows an effective folky side to Watt’s music. And Watt’s own vocals on “Big Train” are as big-hearted, sly, and funny as the album itself. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: ProStudioMasters | Booklet, Front Cover | © ACT Music

“Gimme The Boots” proves once again that Berlin quartet Mo’ Blow has successfully perfected a hybrid of sounds of the 1970s and the contemporary. The whole album originates from the band’s own machine, including the compositions for all 12 tracks and the distinctive sound the quartet has developed over a decade of playing together. A musical energy is captured here that has made the group famous for those 10 years, in hundreds of concerts both in Germany and abroad.

More and more young German musicians, primarily from jazz backgrounds, are discovering the appeal of heavy grooves, earthy sounds and driving rhythms in funk and soul. Swede Nils Landgren has been the European calling card for funk for 20 years with his Funk Unit, and we can now count representatives of the ACT series ‘Young German Jazz’ among the pioneers of the next generation: The Berlin quartet Mo’ Blow astonished the scene two years ago with their snappy ACT debut ‘For Those About To Funk’. The Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper wrote, ‘Party, not with run-of-the-mill grooves, but with quality,’, whilst others praised the timelessness and complexity of the album. In addition to good critiques, Mo’ Blow also won the ‘Future Sounds’ competition at the Leverkusen Jazz Days, there being no doubt in the jury’s mind: ‘Mo’ Blow light up a sparkling funk firework on the stage’.

And now, ‘Gimme The Boots’ proves all the more that Mo’ Blow really is the successful hybrid of sounds of the seventies with the contemporary. With its own high energy, the very first track ‘Call Me Milroy’ grabs you by the ears and legs, from the slap sounds, cool phrases and reverberating sax played by Mo’ Blow founder Felix Falk to the perfect round-off with a percussive solo by Matti Klein on the Fender Rhodes. The distinctive theme of ‘Winter Came Early’ glides past lightly and easily, while the shouts of ‘Papa’s Pancakes’ are nervous and driven. Sonorous soul dominates on ‘Ray’, minimalistic but all the more engendering ‘good vibrations’. Pure funk with the slapped bass of Tobias Fleischer and rapid, sharp syncopations by the entire band bring ‘Slingshot’ to the boil.

The four have decided to go with pure Mo’ Blow on this album and, though there was no shortage of offers, this time they chose not to call on guest stars. The whole record originated from the band’s own machine, including the compositions for all twelve tracks, and the distinctive sound that has developed over the ten years of their playing together really comes into its own. A musical energy is captured here that the group has earned itself over the years, in hundreds of concerts both in Germany and abroad. The solos are no less emphatic, and it’s no wonder when one considers the huge musical spectrum that each of the four band members contributes. More than anything it is the many surprising details that define the character of the Mo’ Blow sound: the atmospheric percussion introduction on ‘Sunsqueezed’, the didgeridoo on ‘Gimme The Boots’ and the wild, whirling lead-in by André Seidel on ‘Headbutt’.

The mixture is the key. “Master of Funk” Nils Landgren couldn’t resist: he produced this second album just as he did the ACT debut. Together it all makes up a dynamic, thrilling, feel-good album. The young German guns – causing an ever-growing international furore.

Pioneering electronic musician/DJ/producer Moby releases his 12th album These Systems Are Failing, as Moby & The Void Pacific Choir. As with much of Moby’s output during his nearly three-decadelong career, it’s not surprising that a spiritual & political questioning underpins the nine songs comprising latest full length album. In characteristically iconoclastic fashion, the weighty themes explored throughout These Systems Are Failing find expression in the most direct & personal music Moby has ever created. “That quality of atmospheric sadness I’ve done so much of before isn’t here – there’s nothing quiet or ambient,” he notes. “Sonically, this record isn’t subtle: it’s big & loud, with huge kick drums & massive choral choruses.”

Co-credited to the Void Pacific Choir — a name derived from a D.H. Lawrence quote — These Systems Are Failing is only slightly more collaborative than Moby’s solitary ambient work, and its effect is the opposite of that. Fully energized and tightly concentrated, the producer’s first studio album in three years is a concise and infrequently relenting set of nine songs that rail against those who have caused emotional and planetary harm. Moby revisits his punk and post-punk roots with a needling attack. Battering programmed drums, searing synthesizers, and torrents of rhythm guitar serve as prodding backdrops for his belting, often multi-tracked vocals. (The actual choir, a seven-member group including Moby, appears on two songs.) All the chanted choruses and seething verses over riotous rhythms evoke an apocalyptic glam-punk protest of sorts, with Moby indignant about “Selling off heaven for a perfect hell,” dejectedly reciting “Burn a courtyard, say it’s done/Throwing knives at a dying sun,” and referencing other ills in bleak terms. A couple shafts of light break through. The one that lasts longest is somewhere in “A Simple Love,” which projects a little hope before the despair resumes. In an accompanying essay, Moby says he views the album’s title as a phrase that prompts thought. Any deep thinking will likely have to occur once these brickbats are muted. –AllMusic Review by Andy Kellman

The Word from Mose is a 1964 jazz album by the jazz pianist and singer Mose Allison. The album, described by Allmusic as “light, swinging jazz with a distinctly rural, Southern influence”, has been listed as one of the “core collection” albums for jazz fans by the Penguin Guide to Jazz.

This iconoclastic performer has sometimes been described as a country blues player, perhaps leading to images of a blind man standing on a corner playing a guitar with a bottleneck slide. In reality, Mose Allison is from a much more cosmopolitan tradition, and the country blues adage comes from attempts to describe the sound he gets playing light, swinging jazz with a distinctly rural, Southern influence. This album, from one of many he recorded for Atlantic, actually contains examples of him taking material from the real country blues heritage and reworking it into his own style, to brilliant effect. His “New Parchman Farm” is a fantastic piece, as he changes what was once a stark, depressing prison blues into something else again. Perhaps this version would be more suited to white-collar criminals such as the Watergate mob, basking in upper-class prisons complete with tennis courts. At any rate, this is a performance that only the most hardened individual would be able to listen to without a smile cracking their face. Like most of Allison’s releases, this one suffers from a handful of tracks that although not quite throwaway, surely lack the substance of the best songs here. –AllMusic Review by Eugene Chadbourne
