Adela Dalto has been immersed in the highest levels of creative Latin and Brazilian music and has mixed the sophisticated elements of this music with American jazz. Her Latin Jazz repertoire also includes her original compositions, combining beautiful vocal sounds with fiery rhythms. As a Latin Jazz vocalist, recording artist and songwriter, with a successful career that spans over 30 years, her performance has been described as “A sublime melding of Latin and jazz styles – Dalto is sensuous and spellbinding”.

The sister of late Latin jazz pianist Jorge Dalto, Adela Dalto has claimed her own ground as a powerful R&B and jazz vocalist. Having honed her skills through years of performing in small New York clubs, her rise to international stardom was boosted by her involvement with her brother’s group, the InterAmerican Band. She was featured soloist on the tune, “Ease My Pain”, from the group’s 1985 album, Urban Oasis. One of her first performances was as a backup singer for Celia Cruz, and she has since performed with some of the top Latin Jazz artists including Arturo O’Farrell, Mario Bauza’s Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra and Carlos “Patao” Valdez. Her recordings include world class musicians such as Chucho Valdez, David Sanchez, Jerry Gonzalez, David Valentin, Ray Vega and Claudio Roditi. She has collaborated on albums with Mario Bauzá, Lee Konitz, and Aloisio Aguiar. She has performed around the world with her musical group including the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Japan, China, Indonesia and Egypt.

Genre: Jazz

Italian pianist Andrea Pozza admires Wynton Kelly, Hampton Hawes and Red Garland, and his straight-ahead style reflects their influences as well as his own touches of lyricism and sophisticated harmonies. The Japanese label Venus Records is known for finding talent early, and this 2005 recording and his debut CD for the label (reissued here as a deluxe gate-fold paper sleeve edition) is a great example, as Pozza had recorded only one previous album as a leader before this one. Playing a collection of well-known standards, this album served as a perfect introduction of his piano style to the Japanese audience who since then has come to regard Pozza as one of the top Italian jazz pianists. A strong and thrilling piano trio album.

Andrea Pozza is one of the most promising jazz pianists of his generation to emerge on the European scene. On these sessions, he is accompanied by bassist Luciano Milanese and drummer Stefano Bagnoli, both of whom are first-call players for Italian record dates. Producer Tetsuo Hara has a strong preference for a heavy dose of standards, and Pozza doesn’t disappoint, starting with a tense yet swinging take of “Yesterdays.” “Sweet Lorraine” is inevitably compared to landmark versions by Nat King Cole or Art Tatum; Pozza’s lyrical arrangement doesn’t have a vocal nor fireworks at the keyboard, it is just a solid, swinging effort that gradually gathers steam, with a strong solo by Milanese as well. The pianist also has a gift for ballads, opening Duke Ellington’s bittersweet “All Too Soon” unaccompanied while utilizing the sustain pedal extensively until his sidemen join him. He omits the verse to “Poor Butterfly,” opting to pick up the tempo a bit more than most interpreters. There is one relative obscurity present: Billy Strayhorn’s gorgeous ballad “Orson,” a dreamy solo feature for Pozza. Recommended.

Genre: Jazz

Anna Kolchina’s mellow seductive voice has been heard around the world. Born in the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan and a graduate of the St.Petersburg State University of Cultural Arts, Anna has since performed and recorded with world class musicians from Russia, Europe and USA. In 2015, Anna’s debut album Street of Dreams was recorded with the world famous Italian jazz pianist Massimo Farao’s trio in Turin, Italy. In 2016, Anna released her sophomore record with Venus Records, Dark Eyes. Wild Is The Wind is Anna’s third record with Venus, recorded in New York with an all star band featuring John Di Martino on piano, Peter Washington on bass and Willie Jones III on drums.

Anna Kolchina’s Wild is the Wind is a masterclass in ensemble performance. Backed by pianist John di Martino, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Willie Jones, Kolchina is more an equal quartet member than a singer backed by a trio. This is experienced immediately on the title piece, where Kolchina’s delicately-played voice peeks out from behind Washington’s gentle bass playing as it directs the remainder of the arrangement. It is a stunningly organic musical effect that increases the intimacy of the performance greatly. This approach characterizes the remaining tunes, all “standards” to one degree or another. The engineering captures the music three-dimensionally, where the listener can almost walk among the musicians as they perform.

Another element to note about this recording is its programing. The album is made up of 14 love songs… all kinds of love songs. On one hand there is the tentative cynicism introducing “You Do Something To Me,” and maturing in “So In Love,” while a completely different love aspect is studied in the loss-lessening “Don’t Look Back,” “It Never Was You,” and “You Can Have Him.” In all the different settings, Kolchina uses her refined, yet street-smart voice to finely hone the song she is presenting. The totality of approach on Wild is the Wind makes it an event in itself. While Kolchina’s voice is less than perfect, it is perfect in that her vocals betray a knowing and aware character not afraid to show its wounds in its vulnerability, while telegraphing a warning to the listener that it has been all places and knows all things.

Arnett Cleophus Cobb was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, sometimes known as the “Wild Man of the Tenor Sax” because of his uninhibited stomping style. His album, Party Time, has been recorded in 1959 for the Prestige label. This release is a part of the ultimate audiophile Prestige stereo reissues from Analogue Productions – 25 of the most collectible, rarest, most audiophile-sounding Rudy Van Gelder recordings ever made.

Tenor saxophonist Arnett Cobb, who was inactive between 1957 and 1958 due to a serious auto accident, recorded three strong albums for Prestige during the first half of 1959. This album is the only one of the trio that features Cobb as the only horn and backed by a pianist (Ray Bryant) instead of an organ player. With bassist Wendell Marshall, drummer Art Taylor and Ray Barretto on conga completing the group, most of the focus is on Cobb’s tough yet flexible tenor. Such songs as “When My Dreamboat Comes Home,” “Blues in the Closet” and a remake of “Flying Home” make this the definitive Arnett Cobb album from the era. Highly recommended.

01. When My Dreamboat Comes Home
02. Lonesome Road

Nominated as ‘Album of the Year’ in the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards, and as ‘Best Ensemble’ in the UK Parliamentary Jazz Awards, this debut album from Arnie Somogyi’s Ambulance immediately caught the jazz world’s attention. The album features five of the UK’s most exciting young jazz musicians, in collaboration with U.S. jazz legend, trumpeter Eddie Henderson. The majority of ‘Accident and Insurgency’ was completed during one four-hour live session thus capturing the essence and live energy of the band. Tracks combine traditional jazz instruments and improvisation as well as modern electronic techniques and soundscapes of local noises creating a new innovative sound.

Classy UK bassist Somogyi’s Ambulance quintet is currently touring with the gleaming sound of the American former Herbie Hancock trumpeter Eddie Henderson in its front line. But the repertoire on this CD comes from a series of workshop improvisations supported by Aldeburgh’s Snape Maltings in 2006. The area’s flatlands and seascapes are strongly evoked by the tidal cymbal washes, occasional birdsong electronics, and trickling piano atmospherics (pianist Tim Lapthorn and tenor saxist Paul Booth both establish a strong presence), but there’s also plenty of forceful jazz grooving, with Henderson’s sound keeping its lustre and poise over the band’s trickiest time-signature challenges. Herbie Hancock’s 1970s Mwandishi sextet exerts a subtle influence on the tone colours (Henderson played in it, and Somogyi loves it), and the drifting Tumbledown brings out the trumpeter’s Miles Davis-like muted tenderness. The slow-Latin Solace and the shimmery Ellingtonesque Adrift tread water a little, but for the most part it’s elegant writing hitched to imaginative improvising.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – Caravan (1963) [Reissue 2004]

Art Blakey led many editions of his Jazz Messengers over more than three decades, but a strong argument can be made that the Messengers of his Riverside period constituted his strongest unit. With Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Curtis Fuller in the front line, with Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman as Blakey’s rhythm-section mates, its combination of musicianship and sheer swinging force has rarely been equaled in a small band. Caravan was the first of Blakey’s Riverside albums and endures as a living monument to his nonpareil drumming and leadership. His solo on the title tune is one of the finest recorded examples of Blakey’s unique melding of precision and power. Hubbard and Shorter contributed memorable compositions and, with Fuller and Walton, some of the greatest soloing of the 1960s. Caravan rolls again in the full color and range of SACD sound.

By the time that jazz icon/bandleader/percussionist Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers began recording for Riverside in the fall of 1962, Blakey had already been the spiritual center of the group for nearly 15 years. The unprecedented caliber of performers who had already passed through the revolving-door personnel reads like a who’s who of 20th century jazz. On Caravan – his first of several notable sides for the venerable label – he is joined by a quintet of concurrent and future all-stars. Likewise, it could be argued that each has never again been presented in such a fresh or inspired setting as on these recordings. In order to establish with any authority just how heavy (even for purveyors of hard bop) the players in this band are, they need only to be named: Curtis Fuller (trombone), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Cedar Walton (piano), and Reggie Workman (bass). With Blakey (drums) firmly at the helm, these Jazz Messengers deliver a scintillating synergy that doesn’t sacrifice intensity for the sake of cadence. The trademark give-and-take that graces the laid-back and sophisticated pop and jazz standards “Skylark” and “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” likewise is responsible for the palpable energy brought to the sizeable contributions from Shorter and Hubbard – which make up half of the album’s material. The title and leadoff track liquefies Duke Ellington’s original arrangement and ignites it, fueling this extended fiery interpretation. Hubbard’s first solo harks back to his own recording of “Caravan,” which can be heard on the Impulse release Artistry of Freddie Hubbard and was recorded earlier the same year. Coincidentally, that disc also features Curtis Fuller as well as a rare non-Sun Ra-related appearance from John Gilmore (tenor sax). Blow for blow, however, this reading has more than just an edge – it possesses the entire blade. The melody snakes in and out of Blakey’s strident flurry of syncopation. Another highlight is Shorter’s interjectory solo, recalling his ability to succeed John Coltrane in Miles Davis’ coterie. Among the original compositions, Shorter’s upbeat “Sweet ‘n’ Sour” stands out as the most cohesive and ensemble-driven, although the singular group dynamic is well applied to the lively “This Is for Albert” as well. By contrast, Hubbard’s “Thermo” is more angular – taking full advantage of the musicians’ aggressive chops. Angel Clare is the debut solo studio album by Art Garfunkel, released on September 11, 1973. It is his highest charting solo album, peaking at number 5 and contains his only Top 10 hit in the US, “All I Know” which peaked at number 9. It also contained two other Top 40 hits, “Traveling Boy” (#102 Bubbling under the Hot 100, #38 Adult Contemporary) and “I Shall Sing” (#38 Hot 100, #4 Adult Contemporary). It was produced by long-time Simon & Garfunkel producer Roy Halee, alongside Art Garfunkel. The title, Angel Clare, comes from the name of a character in Thomas Hardy’s novel, Tess of the d’Urbervilles.

Garfunkel (he was billed without his first name here) had a lot riding on his debut solo album, and Angel Clare, named after a character in Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles, lived up to the heightened expectations for the man who had sung “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and other Simon & Garfunkel favorites. Garfunkel took no chances, issuing as the first single Jimmy Webb’s “All I Know,” which was arranged in a similar style to “Bridge” and made the Top Ten. Elsewhere on the record, Garfunkel took a more spirited approach, notably on a version of Van Morrison’s “I Shall Sing” that was reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Cecilia” and made the Top 40. Certainly, there was enough firepower on the record, which featured guitarists Jerry Garcia and J.J. Cale. But much of it was filled with stately, orchestra-laden ballads, sung by Garfunkel in his naïve, breathy tenor. If Simon & Garfunkel had been the thinking man’s Everly Brothers, Garfunkel alone turned out to be the thinking man’s Johnny Mathis.

Breakaway is the second solo studio album by Art Garfunkel. It was released in 1975 on Columbia Records. It was produced by Richard Perry who has produced albums for other artists such as Carly Simon. It includes three Top 40 singles: “I Only Have Eyes for You” (US #18, UK #1), “Break Away” (US #39) and the Simon And Garfunkel reunion duet, “My Little Town” which peaked at #9. “I Only Have Eyes For You” is noted also for being Garfunkel’s first #1 single in the UK. Breakaway has proven to be Garfunkel’s most successful solo album; although only peaking at number 9 in the United States, which was lower than his first album Angel Clare (US #5), it has been certified platinum by RIAA.

The second time around, Art Garfunkel turned to pop producer Richard Perry, who liked to record in studios rather than cathedrals and who replaced the angelic style of the first album with a lush pop approach. The result was Garfunkel’s best-selling album. The title track and a cover of “I Only Have Eyes for You” reached the Top 40 (the latter topped the U.K. charts), though the most prominent song was the Simon & Garfunkel reunion single “My Little Town.” But the album was full of wise pop choices, among them Bruce Johnston’s “Disney Girls,” Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever),” and Hal David and Albert Hammond’s “1199 Miles from L.A.” Perry proved that, given the right material and production, the problem of the relative sameness of Garfunkel’s vocal approach could be overcome.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 48:16 minutes | 988 MB | Genre: Pop

British singer-songwriter James Bay follows up four digital-only EPs with his first full-length album, recorded in Nashville with triple Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King. Chaos And The Calm includes the top 10 British single Hold Back The River from the EP of the same name. In 2015 Bay received the Critics’ Choice trophy at the Brit Awards, putting him in the same illustrious company as previous winners and international superstars Adele, Florence + The Machine, Ellie Goulding and Sam Smith.

James Bay is a young British singer and songwriter whose heartfelt songs and passionate vocal style suggest a greater maturity and experience than one would expect from an artist whose debut album was released when he was 24 years old. Chaos and the Calm, Bay’s first full-length album following a pair of well-received EPs, reveals he has a precocious talent as a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, and is just as comfortable with outgoing tracks like “Collide” as he is with intimate, personal numbers such as “Let It Go” as he winds together elements of pop, folk, rock, blues, and soul. Often compared to Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard, Chaos and the Calm shows James Bay has the style and the ability to stand on his own, and it’s the work of a new performer with an impressive potential.

On this critically acclaimed album, pianist Jan Lundgren displays his deep understanding of both tradition and modernism together with his preternatural instinct for bringing the two together. Entirely composed by Lundgren save for one track, Potsdamer Platz provides ample evidence of the compatibility of the musicians and their growth together as the band moves forward with a clear and strong common purpose.

Pianist Jan Lundgren is a fine example of a classically-trained European musician with a strong empathy with mainstream jazz. Potsdamer Platz is, in turn, a fine example of Lundgren’s ability to compose fresh-sounding and often beautiful tunes, allied to a talented quartet of players who know just how to bring the pianist’s ideas to life.

The all-Scandinavian band is terrific—Finnish saxophonist Jukka Perko, Danish drummer Morten Lund and Lundgren’s fellow Swede Dan Berglund on bass. The quartet decamped to Germany to record: Hansa Studio is situated on the titular Berlin square. There’s a jauntiness to tunes like “Twelve Tone Rag” (where some of Lundgren’s phrasing could be mistaken for Mose Allison’s) and the catchy “Potsdamer Platz”—which opens proceedings in an upbeat and positive fashion. “Dance Of Masja” ups the jauntiness quotient: a fast tempo, a rolling rhythm and some driving percussion add up to a great 6′ 25″ of music. By contrast, “No. 9” and “Never Too Late” display a more vulnerable and melancholy side to Lundgren’s writing (and to the quartet’s playing). Both tunes are quite beautiful. “Lycklig Resa” might just be the coolest track of the year. Effortless waltz-time swing, a graceful melody, Perko’s mellow saxophone all generate a nostalgic, early-60s mood. Dudley Moore, Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond spring readily to mind alongside visions of E-type Jags, sharp suits and a touch of brylcreem. Lundgren wrote it as a tribute to Jan Johansson, Sweden’s star jazz pianist of the ’60s, and it certainly fits that bill.

Dirty Computer arrives April 27 via Wondaland Records/Epic/Sony. Monáe previously revealed that Prince worked on the project before he died in 2016. So far, she’s shared the tracks “I Like That,” “PYNK” featuring Grimes, and “Make Me Feel,” and “Django Jane.” Her last album was 2013’s The Electric Lady.

“Yoga” was an ostensibly minor part of the Janelle Monáe discography by the arrival of Dirty Computer. Three years old and outshined by another Wondaland release, Jidenna’s “Classic Man,” it nevertheless became Monáe’s first single to hit the Billboard Hot 100. That Monáe hadn’t previously hit the chart as a headliner was further evidence of a flawed industry, given that she and primary collaborators Nate Wonder and Chuck Lightning had been making songs with pop appeal for nearly a decade. “Yoga” did show that Monáe was more open to messing with contemporary trends. Moreover, the song’s humanized, sexually uninhibited, and anti-authoritarian qualities — she was earthbound, celebrating her body, asserting “You cannot police me” — also indicated the course she has taken with her third album. Oddly enough, “Make Me Feel,” the one Dirty Computer track on which Monáe employs a wholly pop songwriting team including Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, and Mattman & Robin, is the funkiest and friskiest number here, clearly influenced by the late (and uncredited) Prince. Monáe and her trusty Wondaland partners, the album’s dominant creative force, colorfully twist and flip new wave-leaning pop with booming bass drums and rattling percussion. They transmit powerful and defiant jubilance in response to “wack ass fuckboys everywhere (from the traphouse to the White House) who make the lives of little brown girls so damn hard,” among dozens of other inspirations Monáe acknowledges in the essential liner notes. Almost every track is densely packed with quotables delivered in approaches that shift from easygoing elegance to hard-fought, triumphant conviction. The latter approach yields the album’s apex, “Django Jane,” in which Monáe raps throughout with inhuman precision, threatening a pussy riot, declaring “We ain’t hidden no more,” and uplifting the “highly melanated” while dropping some of the set’s few sci-fi allusions, “Made a fandroid outta yo’ girlfriend” among them. Not to be lost in all the power moves are indirect and direct references to a romantic relationship — another form of dissent — referenced and explored throughout, from the glowing “Crazy, Classic, Life” through the fiery “So Afraid,” the only moment of emotional fragility. While this is easily the most loaded Monáe album in terms of guests, with Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, and Grimes among the contributors, there’s no doubt that it’s a Wondaland product. It demonstrates that artful resistance and pop music are not mutually exclusive.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz | Front Cover | © MPS

This 1975 MPS release continues Pork Pie’s cutting-edge exploration on the outer boundaries of fusion, jazz, and ethno. Keyboardist Van’t Hof, saxophonist Charlie Mariano, and guitarist Philip Catherine are joined by renowned Danish musician Bo Stief on electric bass and English drummer John Marshall of Soft Machine fame.

Catherine’s Devil Toes heats up in a tempestuous modal flare, with Mariano’s soprano supplying the fire. Mariano pursues the haunting melody on his Zana, followed by Catherine’s majestic solo over Van’t Hof’s flowing chordal backdrop. Written by one of the greatest South Indian classical music composers, Tyagaraga (1767-1847), Mariano’s arrangement of Telisi Rama illustrates the music’s influence on such jazz greats as John Coltrane, and Van’t Hof’s stellar piano solo intimates his debt to McCoy Tyner. The balladic He’s Gone features Mariano poignant flute, while on Van’t Hof’s Simul Sincrone Mariano sings out on alto saxophone in a wide-open impassioned performance. Avoid the Year of the Monkey runs the gamut from aleatory electronics to sophisticated fusion, as the drums propel stunning soprano sax and organ solos, while Van’t Hof’s The Door is Open reveals an intensely beautiful surreal landscape. As a sequel to Pork Pie’s Transitory, the album’s music is every bit as ‘exploratory, electrifying, and exciting’ as its predecessor.

02 – Zana
03 – Telist Rama
