Genre: Jazz

As Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues and the Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic “Stolen Moments,” but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to form an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section. “Stolen Moments” really needs no comments, as its undisputable beauty shines through in a three-part horn harmony fronting Hubbard’s lead melody. It’s a thing of beauty that is more timeless as the years pass. The “Blues” aspect is best heard on “Yearnin’,” a stylish, swinging, and swaying downhearted piece that is a bluesy as Evans would ever be. Both “Blues” and “Abstract Truth” combine for the darker “Teenie’s Blues,” a feature for Nelson and Dolphy’s alto saxes, Dolphy assertive in stepping forth with his distinctive, angular, dramatic, fractured, brittle voice that marks him a maverick. Then there’s “Hoedown,” which has always been the black sheep of this collection with its country flavor and stereo separated upper and lower horn in snappy call-and-response barking. As surging and searing hard boppers respectively, “Cascades” and “Butch & Butch” again remind you of the era of the early ’60s when this music was king, and why Hubbard was so revered as a young master of the idiom. A must buy for all jazz fans, and a Top Ten or Top Fifty favorite for many.

Oscar Peterson developed a friendship with Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, who proceeded to record the pianist in his first-rate studio beginning in the early ’60s, even though Peterson was under an exclusive contract to Verve at the time. The solution to this problem was to wait until after it expired, and then a number of these sessions were released on various BASF or MPS LPs (and later on Pausa LP reissues). Action represents some of Peterson’s earliest work for Brunner-Schwer; these sessions were recorded before an invited audience in the studio, with the pianist’s working trio of Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen. The group seems extremely relaxed and inspired by the small group of loyal fans, with a brisk waltz treatment of “At Long Last Love” and an extended workout of fellow pianist Billy Taylor’s ballad “Easy Walker” starting things off with a flourish. Their approach to “Tin Tin Deo” is remarkably subtle, while Peterson is at his most lyrical during a pair of Gershwin selections, “I’ve Got a Crush on You” and “A Foggy Day.” The influence of Art Tatum is apparent with Peterson’s darting runs in “Like Someone in Love”.

Genre: Jazz

One of a number of memorable albums recorded by Oscar Peterson for MPS during the mid-’60s, Girl Talk was compiled from several live studio sessions taped between 1964 and 1966, with bassist Sam Jones and either Bobby Durham or Louis Hayes on drums. Peterson’s romping right hand helps this normally bland show tune. The pianist’s imaginative unaccompanied introduction to “I’m in the Mood for Love” adds a new dimension to this old chestnut, with the rhythm section making a belated entrance; it is rather unusual to hear the trio play on just one song for 17 minutes. The title track, an overlooked gem jointly written by Bobby Troup and Neal Hefti, finds the leader in a bluesy mood. The relaxed but jaunty treatment of “Robbin’s Nest” follows a powerful medley of “I Concentrate on You” and “Moon River” to wrap up this highly recommended session.

The third volume of Oscar Peterson’s Exclusively for My Friends series, all recorded with an invited audience in the warm studio of producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, features live trio sessions with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham. The program opens with an unusual medley of Ray Brown’s “Waltzing Is Hip” (played with gusto) and a gently swinging “Satin Doll.” The influence of Art Tatum is apparent during his intricate runs within “Love Is Here to Stay,” while the multifaceted original “Sandy’s Blues” (dedicated to his wife) combines a dark mood with a swinging setting. The lighthearted waltzing treatment of “Alice in Wonderland” is pure joy, while another original, “Noreen’s Nocturne,” is simply a showstopper.

Genre: Jazz

This is yet another memorable concert by the Oscar Peterson Trio recorded in Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer’s excellent studio. With bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham, Peterson tears into the old gospel favorite “Travelin’ On” with a passion second to none. Following it is a beautiful treatment of Johnny Mandel’s timeless ballad “Emily,” which runs for over ten minutes but never loses its impact. Durham sets the pace with his soft percussion to set up Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Corcovado” (later known as “Quiet Nights”), though Peterson devours the song whole with a breathtaking display of his formidable technique. Francy Boland’s “Sax No End” was a relatively new composition, having been recorded for the first time just the previous year by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. But one can almost hear a larger ensemble by listening to Peterson’s virtuoso interpretation in an uptempo setting, assisted by Jones’ agile bass and Durham’s steady percussion. Peterson cools off his audience with an extended exploration of Benny Carter’s “When Lights Are Low,” though his fresh approach makes it seem like a brand new composition. Like other releases in Oscar Peterson’s Exclusively for My Friends series, Travelin’ On is warmly recommended.

Genre: Soul, Funk

Otis Redding’s third album, and his first fully realized album, presents his talent unfettered, his direction clear, and his confidence emboldened, with fully half the songs representing a reach that extended his musical grasp. More than a quarter of this album is given over to Redding’s versions of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December, and all three are worth owning and hearing. Two of them, “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Shake,” are every bit as essential as any soul recordings ever made, and while they (and much of this album) have reappeared on several anthologies, it’s useful to hear the songs from those sessions juxtaposed with each other, and with “Wonderful World,” which is seldom compiled elsewhere. Also featured are Redding’s spellbinding renditions of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (a song epitomizing the fully formed Stax/Volt sound and which Mick Jagger and Keith Richards originally wrote in tribute to and imitation of Redding’s style), “My Girl,” and “You Don’t Miss Your Water.” “Respect” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” two originals that were to loom large in his career, are here as well; the former became vastly popular in the hands of Aretha Franklin and the latter was an instant soul classic. Among the seldom-cited jewels here is a rendition of B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby” that has the singer sharing the spotlight with Steve Cropper, his playing alternately elegant and fiery, with Wayne Jackson and Gene “Bowlegs” Miller’s trumpets and Andrew Love’s and Floyd Newman’s saxes providing the backing. Redding’s powerful, remarkable singing throughout makes Otis Blue gritty, rich, and achingly alive, and an essential listening experience.

Since 2012 Erased Tapes peers Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm have spent many hours together in their studios across Berlin and Reykjavik, freely improvising and occasionally capturing the music for their fans. The duo’s sound is an astoundingly rich, tonally pure example of synth-driven experimentation, conceived and performed by two prolific collaborators.

During a session at Nils’s Durton Studio in Berlin last summer the two specially invited photographer Alexander Schneider to capture one of their unique improvised sessions. Lasting long into the night, the pair gradually and organically formed several individual songs – each contributing to the narrative of a larger, transformative piece of music. Recorded in eight hours with no overdubs or edits, ‘Trance Frendz’ is a captivating journey through grand soundscapes and droning crescendos which crash and recede back, making way for delicate piano notes and swirling synthesizers.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (At The Drive-In/Mars Volta) is in the midst of releasing a series of solo albums via Ipecac Recordings. Azul, Mis Dientes is the 18th album in the series, and the third of a further 12 solo records to be released in 2017.

The previously unreleased albums were recorded from 2008 to 2013, while Rodriguez-Lopez lived in Zapopan, Mexico and as well as his eventual return to El Paso. The titles have been released on a bi-weekly basis.
Not only is Azul, Mis Dientes the 18th album in the series, the release marks Rodriguez-Lopez’s 43rd studio album.

“The best part about having a record label is that you get to choose to work with people that you really admire,” said Ipecac co-owner Greg Werckman. “We had all admired Omar’s work from afar and then recently got to know him up close. It was so great to find out that as talented as he is, he is an even better human being and we love having him as part of the Ipecac family. But, it seems that he has blatantly taken advantage of our friendship. Sure, we were excited to release his solo catalogue… but this many titles? What have we gotten ourselves into?”

Rodriguez-Lopez adds, “It’s crucial in this day and age to be able to surround yourself with like-minded people that you can share an ethos with. I feel grateful and fortunate enough to have found this with such amazing people: Mike, Greg, Shawn, Marc and the Ipecac family. After throwing around many different project ideas, this seemed like the best place to actually begin, on what will surely be a long lasting collaboration.”

“I can’t think of a better home for these records or of another label crazy enough to put out this much material. The series also owes its blood to the hard work and talents of Jon Debaun and Chris Common, who diligently scoured through endless hard drives to find these albums and provide such stellar mixes.”

Recorded: 1959 at Kingsway Hall, London

The Karajan Official Remastered Edition comprises 13 box sets containing official remasterings of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI between 1946 and 1984, and which are now a jewel of the Warner Classics catalogue.
For many, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) – hailed early in his career as ‘Das Wunder Karajan’ (The Karajan Miracle) and known in the early 1960s as ‘the music director of Europe’ – remains the ultimate embodiment of the maestro. The release of the Karajan Official Remastered Edition over the first half of 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the conductor’s death in July 1989 at the age of 81.
He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946 to 1960 and then again from 1969 to 1984). EMI’s legendary producer Walter Legge sought him out in Vienna just after World War II and the long relationship that ensued embraced recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia (the orchestra founded by Legge), the Berlin Philharmonic (of which Karajan became ‘conductor for life’ in 1955), the forces of La Scala, Milan, and the Orchestre de Paris.
The Karajan Official Remastered Edition will feature primarily symphonic and choral music. The entire edition will comprise recordings remastered from the original sources in 24-bit/96kHz at Abbey Road Studios, the world’s most renowned recording studio.

Pianist Oscar Peterson is frequently astounding on this solo set. After nearly 20 years of mostly performing with trios, Peterson sounds quite liberated in this setting, throwing in some hot stride, unexpected changes in tempos and keys, and surprises whenever he thinks of them. “Give Me the Simple Life,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” and the ironically titled “A Little Jazz Exercise” are quite remarkable, yet Peterson also leaves space for some sensitive ballads.

Oscar Peterson has a gargantuan discography in which he is well represented in all kinds of ensembles. But his solo outings are among his very finest. Though his group efforts show his playing at a consistent level of virtuosity and reveal his ability to adapt to any style or context, Peterson truly shines when free of the constraints of group interplay. His tempos fluctuate, his approach to phrasing is more fluid and free, and he is more likely to draw on his stunning command of styles (including stride, advanced bop, tender lyricism, and swing), mixing and matching at will, often within the same song. The set list for “Tracks” includes old-school romps (‘Basin Street Blues’), exquisite balladry (‘A Child is Born’), popular songs (‘Just a Gigolo’), and dazzling exercises in sheer technical ability (‘A Little Jazz Exercise’). “Tracks” is a document of a man utterly conversant with the language of his instrument, and is one of the most impressive examples of what Oscar Peterson does best.

Although there are numerous recordings featuring the Oscar Peterson Trio (with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis), the discovery of another previously unreleased date such as this one is welcome news to his fans. This concert, recorded in the summer of 1958 at the Orpheum Theater in Vancouver, Canada, finds the group in top form, beginning with the simmering treatment of “Alone Together.”

In addition to other familiar favorites (such as a gallop through “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top” and a pristine take of “My Funny Valentine”), the trio delves into rarely heard original material, including Peterson’s lovely “Music Box Suite” (also known as “Daisy’s Dream”) and a pair of works by Ellis, the wide-ranging solo feature called “Patricia” and “Pogo,” a turbocharged bop line focusing on Ellis and Brown, with a deliberately delayed entrance by the leader.

Paolo Conte has captivated audiences the world over for the past four decades. With his gruff voice and unmistakable style, he tells the tales of his humorous but poignant views of the world through his music. Amazing Game is the first-ever instrumental album by the Italian singer/songwriter and consists of recordings made at different times (from the ‘90s to the present day), for soundtracks of theatre productions and for experimental purposes – all showing off his skills in improvisation.

“Amazing Game – Instrumental Music” Author’s introduction. This repertoire consists of recordings made at different times (from the 90s to the present day), for sound tracks of theatre productions and for study and experimental purposes, that I had very carefully tucked away at the back of various drawers. And now they are being released in disc-form in agreement with Decca. Lots of words and lots of improvisation. One such track is “F.F.F.F.” (For four free friends), another is “Fuga nell’Amazzonia in re minore” (Escape in Amazonia in D minor) in which the “hard core” of my musicians jam with me in a free session (I don’t mean free jazz, just free) – I’m on the piano leading with a few structured bits and spur-of-the-moment sequences and the others are following me and improvising with great skill and complicity, proof of what cloud level we were on at the time! The tracks are very varied in style and always performed with great conviction and energy. This is how I’ve celebrated a wonderful friendship between myself and my dear musician friends and the pride of happy times immersed in music.

DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz | Time – 01:02:52 minutes | 2,48 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: AcousticSounds | Front Cover | © Premonition Records
Recorded: Chicago Recordings Company, Studio 5, Chicago IL. June 28-30, July 1, 1994.
Analog 2-track mixes transferred to 24/192 kHz by Doug Sax. Converted to DSD from the 24/192 by Gus Skinas

Cafe Blue was recorded at Chicago Recording Company in early 1994 by recording engineer Jim Anderson. It was the first release Barber recorded for Premonition Records. Recorded in 16/48 kHz on a 32-track Otari machine, the original multitracks were then transferred and remixed in 2011 at Capitol Studios in Holywood, California. The idea was to reimagine the album, which had become one of the most widely praised jazz recordings of the 1900s, at one of the legendary recording facilities of the golden era of jazz recording, the late 1950s. Utilizing Studio B’s remarkably warm Neve 808 console, which was actually the first Neve console in the U.S., and Capitol’s EMT plate reverbs and live chambers, Anderson delivered a stunning reinterpretation that has become the standard versiion of this recording. The album was mastered from the original analog mixes by David Glasser of Airshow Mastering.

Cafe Blue itself is so special that it outshines its peers. This recording of an outstanding female vocalist won more than 15 awards of best reviews from international major magazines of music institutions. But the most important aspect of this disc crystallizes in the two songs for which Barber herself has written the lyrics. The down-and-out sophistication of “What A Shame” and the self-effacing wonderment of “Too Rich For My Blood,” show a serious jazz musician exploring the emotional domain normally occupied by pop and rock artists.

Patricia Barber, who is both a fine keyboardist and an atmospheric singer, contributes roughly half of the material to her Premonition debut. Her dark voice and the generally esoteric program takes awhile to get used to (listeners will have to be patient), but after two or three listens, this thought-provoking and rather moody set becomes more accessible. The music ranges stylewise from sophisticated pop sensitivities to the avant-garde and even touches of minimalism, while not fitting securely into any category. Barber gives a new slant to “The Thrill Is Gone,” “Ode to Billy Joe,” and even “A Taste of Honey,” and her vocals are all quite haunting and contemporary. An added plus to this unusual music is adventurous guitarist John McLean. –AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

The Modern Dance is the debut studio album by American rock band Pere Ubu. The album was issued in early 1978, and although the record made little commercial impact at home or abroad, its manic intensity and dark impenetrability proved profoundly influential on countless post-punk acts on both sides of the Atlantic.

There isn’t a Pere Ubu recording you can imagine living without. The Modern Dance remains the essential Ubu purchase (as does the follow-up, Dub Housing). For sure, Mercury had no idea what they had on their hands when they released this as part of their punk rock offshoot label Blank, but it remains a classic slice of art-punk. It announces itself quite boldly: the first sound you hear is a painfully high-pitched whine of feedback, but then Tom Herman’s postmodern Chuck Berry riffing kicks off the brilliant “Non-Alignment Pact,” and you soon realize that this is punk rock unlike any you’ve ever heard. David Thomas’ caterwauling is funny and moving, Scott Krauss (drums) and Tony Maimone (bass) are one of the great unheralded rhythm sections in all of rock, and the “difficult” tracks like “Street Waves,” “Chinese Radiation,” and the terrifying “Humor Me” are revelatory, and way ahead of their time. The Modern Dance is the signature sound of the avant-garage: art rock, punk rock, and garage rock mixing together joyously and fearlessly. ~~ AllMusic Review by John Dougan

Perry Como returns to the homeland and the music of his ancestors via the sublime Perry Como in Italy, recorded in Rome with arranger Nick Perito. Singing in both English and Italian, Como delivers some of the most poignant and thoughtful performances of his career, channeling a melancholy heartbreaking in both scope and depth. Perito’s evocatively nocturnal arrangements further underscore the soul-searching drama of the vocals, and while retaining the subtlety and self-effacing honesty that are the signatures of Como’s craft, the album borders on the operatic in terms of its emotional intensity.

The heyday of pianist Pete Jolly’s jazz career was during the 1950s and early 1960s, when he made the bulk of his recordings as a leader. He had previously focused mainly on studio work in Hollywood for television and films, although he performed regularly in a jazz setting up until his death in 2004. This circa-1965 studio date, Too Much, Baby, is a trio session with bassist Chuck Berghofer and drummer Nick Martinis, concentrating on then-current pop songs and Broadway fare. Unfortunately, there is little room for the group to stretch out, as the songs all run under four minutes and are, for the most part, promptly faded out not long after Jolly completes his solos. His lively interpretation of “Sometime Ago,” which includes a solo feature for Berghofer, is easily the album’s highlight, though standards such as “One Morning in May” and his take of “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” are also enjoyable. But even long-since forgotten material like “Same Ol’ Huckleberry Finn (Up Cherry Street),” made popular by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (with whom Jolly worked briefly as a sideman) and written by Julius Wechter of the Baja Marimba Band, becomes an unlikely jazz vehicle in Jolly’s hands, adding some humorous ragtime into the mix. ~~ AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden
