Recorded: 23 & 25 August 1955

Music for Torching is a 1955 studio album by jazz vocalist Billie Holiday. The record features covers of “It Had to Be You”, “A Fine Romance”, “I Get a Kick Out of You” and “Come Rain or Come Shine”.

This 1955 collection of standards features a preponderance of ballads, putting the emphasis on Holiday’s voice, stylings and her sensitive, intuitive interpretations. Among the session musicians backing Holiday are Harry “Sweets” Edison on trumpet and Benny Carter on alto sax.

“… Holiday could still sing better than most, her sense of rhythm still mostly intact, her unusual timbre still there (perhaps even a bit more idiosyncratic with age) and still able to tell the story of any song. And what songs she was given for these sessions: there isn’t a dud in the bunch.” –All About Jazz

“The overall feeling on this 1955 recording, which was originally titled Velvet Mood, is strictly after-hours: the party is long over but a few close friends remain for nightcaps and, is that the sun peeking through the window? With slow tempo songs outnumbering not-so-slow songs fourteen to four, producer Norman Granz may or may not have had concept album on his mind. Whatever the case, he brought together a brilliant cross-section of cats who evidently put Billie entirely at ease and in the mood–no small feat when one considers her spotty later recordings.

Lady Day’s renderings here of ‘It Had to Be You’ and ‘Isn’t This a Lovely Day?’ are timeless gems. Other highlights include Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison and Benny Carter taking turns answering Holiday’s vocalizations line by line, interviews in the liner notes with surviving members of the session, and a rehearsal track of Duke Ellington’s ‘Prelude to a Kiss’ recorded the night before by the bass player in his basement.” — AllMusic

Recorded: February 12, 1945 and October 3, 1946 at the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and recorded at Carnegie Hall on June 3, 1946.

Billie Holiday’s At Jazz At The Philharmonic was originally recorded live February 12th, 19454 and October 3rd, 1946 at the Shrine Auditorium in LA, California. The performance was part of the touring jazz series At Jazz At The Philharmonic installed by American jazz producer Norman Granz. The album features popular song titles “Body and Soul”, “Gee, Baby, Ain’t I Good to You” and “All of Me”.

The first of seven volumes to present all of Billie Holiday’s Verve recordings, JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC gathers live performances from 1945 to 1947, as well as her 1957 Newport Jazz Festival set and the two songs she sang at the Seven Ages of Jazz Festival in 1958. Throughout, Holiday’s voice transcends fluctuations in sound quality to swirl straight into the listener’s blood. Lady Day exhibits total control of her achingly expressive, emotionally charged voice and sweeps it through the phrasings of “Fine and Mellow,” “The Man I Love,” and “Trav’lin’ Light” with the fluid ease and interpretive brilliance of a seasoned instrumentalist. There is a noticible difference in vocal timbre in the Newport recordings– thicker, darker and more bluesy. JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC is a memorable collection and, at moments, manages to capture Holiday at her finest. –AllMusic

Recorded: April 1, 1952 and the second on April 14, 1954.

Billie Holiday’s recordings for Commodore Records have been overshadowed to a large part by her Verve and Columbia offerings, but this collection recorded in 1944 deserves a place alongside her better known albums. Includes the first version of her first hit and signature song, the racially-charged Strange Fruit.

“… she achieved a perfect, lapidary balance, one that can still guide aspiring singers on how to interpret a song … these sessions provide us with Holiday’s last perky swing romps …”

Recorded: #1-3: Los Angeles, CA, April, 1952; #4-9: New York, July 27, 1952; #10-12: New York, April 14, 1954

This compilation, gathered from recordings of her New York sessions in 1954, is an excellent sampler of the skills and charms of Lady Day. While the disc may appear to be just another throw-together of Holiday hits, with nothing in particular to distinguish it from the others, the arrangements, the performances and the recordings themselves are all wonderful. Backed by tight, laid-back session musicians (Oscar Peterson plays piano on many of the tracks–check out his solo on “Lover, Come Back to Me”), Holiday here enjoys the last full flush of her talents before health and substance abuse problems claimed her voice in the late ’50s.
In tracks like “He’s Funny That Way” and “Softly,” her raspy voice plays over melodies, caressing them, trailing off the end of phrases for emotional punctuation. Her tone is at once rich and wispy, managing simultaneously to convey vulnerability, despair, strength and sexuality. From the up-tempo swing of “Too Marvelous for Words” to the piano/vocal duo “I Thought About You, Recital is full of gems and a perfect album to put on at 3:00 in the morning.

Recorded in Los Angeles #1, 3 January 7, 1957; #2, 4, 5 to 7 January 9, 1957; #8 January 3, 1957.

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original analog master tapes to vinyl and PCM. The DSD was sourced from the PCM. George listened to all of the different A/D converters he had before he chose which to use, and he felt the George Massenburg GML 20 bit A/D produced the best and most synergistic sound for the project.

Small jazz groups brought out the best in Billie Holiday – especially groups as good as the one heard on this classic 1957 recording. Ben Webster, Harry “Sweets” Edison and the other members of this stellar ensemble were not just gifted soloists but sensitive accompanists as well. Lady Day was rarely more ably supported than she was on this program of sturdy standards, including three gems by the Gershwin brothers -and she rarely sounded more luminous.

This session comes from close to the end of the line (1959) in the erstwhile swinging company of Barney Kessel on guitar, Ben Webster on tenor, and naysayers will be quick to point out that Lady Day wasn’t in peak form here. But Billie Holiday with some of the platinum chipped off the pipes is still way better than a buncha finger-snappin’ wannabes anyday. Her interpretations of the title cut, “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” and “Darn That Dream” hold you in the palm of her hand with their gentle swing and the band support here is never less than stellar. This Mobile Fidelity reissue (also available as an audiophile vinyl pressing) features in-the-control-room sound that makes this session sound even cozier. The Lady sings and swings. –Cub Koda

Songs for Distingué Lovers forms part of the last series of extensive small-group recordings that Lady Day would make in the studio. Although her voice was largely shot at this point, she puts so much feeling into the lyrics that it’s easy to overlook her dark sound. The band is a major asset, and made up of all-stars: trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison, tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, pianist Jimmie Rowles, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Red Mitchell, and Alvin Stoller or Larry Bunker on drums. There are plenty of short solos for Edison, Webster, and Kessel. Holiday does her best on such numbers as “A Foggy Day,” “One for My Baby,” “Just One of Those Things,” and “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” and there are plenty of haunting moments, even if one could tell (even at the time) that the end was probably drawing near for the singer.

This is the most controversial of all Billie Holiday records. Lady Day herself said that this session (which finds her accompanied by Ray Ellis’ string orchestra) was her personal favorite, and many listeners have found her emotional versions of such songs as “I’m a Fool to Want You,” “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” “Glad to Be Unhappy,” and particularly “You’ve Changed” to be quite touching. But Holiday’s voice was essentially gone by 1958, and although not yet 43, she could have passed for 73. Ellis’ arrangements do not help, veering close to Muzak; most of this record is very difficult to listen to. Late in life, Holiday expressed the pain of life so effectively that her croaking voice had become almost unbearable to hear. There is certainly a wide range of opinion as to the value of this set. [Some reissues add two alternate takes of “I’m a Fool to Want You,” part of which were used for the original released rendition, plus the stereo version of “The End of a Love Affair” (only previously released in mono) and examples of Lady Day rehearsing the latter song, including a long unaccompanied stretch.

Recorded: 19–21 February 1958, Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York City

Billie Holiday was a true artist of her day and rose as a social phenomenon in the 1950s. Her soulful, unique singing voice and her ability to boldly turn any material that she confronted into her own music made her a superstar of her time. Today, Holiday is remembered for her masterpieces, creativity and vivacity, as many of Lady Day’s songs are as well known today as they were decades ago. Holiday’s poignant voice is still considered to be one of the greatest jazz voices of all time.

After years on Norman Granz’s Clef/Norgran/Verve group of labels, and impressed by arrangements she had heard by Ray Ellis, Holiday cut this album for Columbia in 1958. A highwater mark of her career, Lady In Satin served as Billie’s second to last studio effort and final album released during her lifetime. The results are a very smooth, velvety set of tunes that go down like a twelve year old single-malt scotch. Standouts include “I Get Along Without You Very Well” and “You’ve Changed.”

This was Billie Holiday’s penultimate album, recorded when her body was telling her enough was enough. During the sessions with arranger Ray Ellis she was drinking vodka neat, as if it were tap water. Despite her ravaged voice (the sweetness had long gone), she was still an incredible singer. The feeling and tension she manages to put into almost every track set this album as one of her finest achievements. “You’ve Changed” and “I Get Along Without You Very Well” are high art performances from the singer who saw life from the bottom up. –AllMusic Review by Rovi Staff

With an outstanding solo quartet and a great chorus and orchestra, Davis leads a sterling performance that challenges the supremacy of his 1966 Philips recording of Messiah. Davis leads a dramatic performance; the famous “Hallelujah” chorus appropriately grand, the final “Amen” bristling with brazen energy, both sung with extraordinary tonal coloring and precise articulation by the chorus, which also shines in a lithe “He shall purify” and a vividly virtuoso “For unto us a child is born.” Soprano Susan Gritton’s solos are a delight, whether in the measured “Behold, a virgin shall conceive” or her exuberant “Rejoice greatly.” The vocal purity of her “I know my redeemer liveth” makes this track a highlight. Alto Sara Mingardo’s darker tones are especially moving in her arias and dramatic in “He was despised.” The men are almost as good; Alistair Miles sonorous in the bass arias and Mark Padmore recovering nicely after a somewhat mannered “Evr’y valley.” The LSO is in excellent form too, the strings expressive in the orchestral interludes and the brass shining brightly in the big choruses of Part III, where the tympani thwacks are startling in their power.

Veteran pianist Hank Jones is hardly slowing down at the age of 87, as heard on this beautifully recorded session in early 2006. With drummer Jimmy Cobb (who sticks to brushes) and Christian McBride rounding out his potent trio, Jones keeps old warhorses like “On Green Dolphin Street” fresh, giving ample space to his partner and adding a humorous detour into Billy Strayhorn’s “Rain Check.” Other highlights include his elegant treatment of his late brother Thad’s timeless ballad “A Child Is Born” and a hard driving take of Charlie Parker’s “Confirmation.” McBride shows depth beyond his years with strong accompaniment and swinging solos. This Hybrid Super Audio CD, recorded without any gimmickry such as remixing or compression, enables the listener to enjoy these intimate performances as if sitting in the studio with the players.

Why any critic would think that Hank Mobley was at the end of his creative spark in 1963 – a commonly if stupidly held view among the eggheads who do this for a living – is ridiculous, as this fine session proves. By 1963, Mobley had undergone a transformation of tone. Replacing the scintillating airiness of his late-’50s sides was a harder, more strident, almost honking one, due in part to the influence of John Coltrane and in part to Mobley’s deeper concentration on the expressing blues feeling in his trademark hard bop tunes. The CD version of this album sets the record straight, dropping some tunes form a session months earlier and replacing them with alternate takes of the title cut and “Carolyn” for historical integrity, as well as adding “Syrup and Biscuits” and “Comin’ Back.” Mobley assembled a crack band for this blues-drenched hard-rollicking set made up of material written by either him or trumpeter Lee Morgan. Other members of the ensemble were pianist Andrew Hill, drummer Philly Joe Jones, and bassist John Ore. The title track, which opens the set, is a stand-in metaphor for the rest: Mobley’s strong and knotty off-minor front-line trading fours with Hill that moves into brief but aggressive soloing for he and Morgan and brings the melody back, altered with the changes from Hill. On Morgan’s “Me ‘n’ You,” an aggressive but short bluesed-out vamp backed by a mutated samba beat, comes right out of the Art Blakey book of the blues and is articulated wonderfully by Mobley’s solo, which alternates between short, clipped phrases along the line of the changes and longer trill and ostinatos where the end of a musical line is dictated by his breath rather than a chord change. Morgan is in the pocket of the blue shades, coloring the ends of his lines with trills and short staccato bursts, warping them in Hill’s open, chromatic voicings. All eight cuts here move with similar fluidity and offer a very gritty and realist approach to the roots of hard bop. Highly recommended.

This recording of one of Haydn’s greatest masterpieces is not to be missed. Those who are familiar with Colin Davis’s recordings of the Haydn London Symphonies, made over 30 years ago with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, will know that he has a special affection for this composer’s music and unfailingly communicates his love of it to both performers and listeners alike. Surprisingly this would appear to be the first time that he has recorded Haydn’s Creation, but it has been worth the wait.

‘His [Sir Colin Davis] response to the actual sound of the piece is beautifully managed throughout, with Haydn’s sense of wonder coming vividly alive. The LSO is on unimpeachable form, with many thrilling individual touches … The sound is excellent, covering the entire picture while simultaneously setting out plenty of detail.’ BBC Music Magazine

***** ‘The LSO’s magnificent playing of this awe-inspiring work is an immediate reminder of the impact of Sir Colin Davis’s conducting. He has chosen excellent soloists for their various roles – the soprano Sally Matthews, tenor Ian Bostridge and baritone Dietrich Henschel – and the chorus are in superb voice.’ The Sunday Telegraph

‘It seems to me to get the spirit of the work exactly right, achieving lightness without losing a sence of substance, offering precision as well as a feeling of spontaneity … The choral singing, meanwhile, is incisive throughout.’ The Sunday Times

***** ‘From first to last this recording has a definitive quality about it … His [Sir Colin Davis] whole approach is filled with life and energy: this reading is about the youthful sparks of earthly creation … That spirit, albeit refined and given focus by Davis’s consummate artistry, pervades just about every bar and inspires all involved.’ Classic FM Magazine

‘Davis ensures that each of the choruses that close the three parts builds thrillingly to an incandescent climax … I shall certainly be returning to this new recordings for much of the solo work, for the glorious playing of the LSO and, above all, for Davis’s wise, joyous direction.’ Gramophone

‘I cannot think of a better version done with traditional forces in many, many years … The singing is superb, the soloists all the more so … This is one of the best releases to date, with lovely surround sounds adding much to the presentation … The is a truly a wonderful achievement.’Audiophile Audition

‘The three soloists are a felicitously well-matched team … The LSC excels as it always does in these big choral masterworks … this is another huge triumph for LSO Live.’ Musical Criticism.com

In reissuing its vintage stereo recordings, RCA either reproduces the original albums as they were released on LP or combines several recordings into much fuller programs. Fortunately, the 2nd option pertains to this album of Jascha Heifetz’s masterful performances of violin concertos by Sibelius, Prokofiev & Glazunov; listeners get well over an hour of great music. Heifetz recorded Sibelius’ concerto & Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 2 in 1959, & these were released on LP with Walter Hendl & the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the former, & with Charles Münch & the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the latter; the Glazunov concerto was recorded in 1963, with Hendl leading the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra. As varied as the conductors, ensembles, & venues are, there is remarkable consistency in the excellence of the recordings. Heifetz is always in complete control, & his awe-inspiring playing binds these performances. In terms of reproduction, Heifetz is always distinctly separated from the orchestral accompaniment, & the 3 ensembles are reproduced with natural depth. For Heifetz fans who want to hear every astonishing detail, this is an ideal disc. ~~ Allmusic review

Hélène Grimaud, who has lived with the early D minor Concerto for decades, has called Brahms’s Op 15 ‘a piece I need to survive’. Indeed, she recorded it with that kind of urgency for Erato back in 1997 with Kurt Sanderling and the Staatskapelle Berlin, her passion making up for the lack in sheer power you’d find in accounts by the likes of Brendel or Pollini.

This reissue of classical music masterpieces by ESOTERIC has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound, and for using hybrid SACD technology to improve sound quality. These new audio versions feature ESOTERIC’s proprietary re-mastering process to achieve the highest level of sound quality.

Enrico Nicola “Henry” Mancini was an American composer, conductor and arranger, who is best remembered for his film and television scores. If the recognition of one’s peers is the true measure of success, then few men are as successful as composer, arranger, and conductor Henry Mancini. In a career that spanned 40 years, writing for film and television, Mancini won four Oscars and twenty Grammys, the all-time record for a pop artist. This SACD release combines 2 LP on 1 SACD – “Mancini Country” (1970) & “Country Gentleman” (1974).
