The Isley Brothers – The RCA Victor & T-Neck Album Masters 1959-1983 (23CD) (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 20:34:19 minutes | 24.4 GB | Genre: Soul/Funk/R&B
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: Q0buz | @ Epic – Legacy

An essential library collection chronicling the sonic evolution and abiding achievements of the unprecedented R&B ensemble, The Isley Brothers: The RCA Victor and T-Neck Album Masters (1959-1983) follows The Isley Brothers through their transformation from a 1950’s doo-wop/gospel vocal group into the world’s preeminent R&B rock ‘n’ soul powerhouse party band. As evidenced in this quarter century of recordings, The Isley Brothers absorbed the music and culture surrounding them to continually create contemporary sounds spanning the decades.    The Isley Brothers: The RCA Victor and T-Neck Album Masters (1959-1983) features newly remastered versions of The Isley Brothers’ 21 albums released for both labels, nearly all of which are expanded with rare mixes and tracks making their CD debut. The new collection includes 84 rare and previously unreleased bonus tracks.   This set also includes, released here for the first time in its entirety, the “Great Lost Isley Brothers Album”: Wild In Woodstock: The Isley Brothers Live At Bearsville Sound Studio 1980. First conceived as a “live” double album (with overdubbed crowd noise), this newly restored performance offers an immersive look at a crucial chapter in The Isley Brothers’ history, a pivotal moment in the fusion of rock and funk music in an era fueled by the sound of the Isleys.    The Isley Brothers: The RCA Victor and T-Neck Album Masters (1959-1983) offers new music fans an opportunity to revisit the seminal R&B sounds that continue to reverberate through contemporary soul, rock, hip-hop and pop records.

Lucy Rose Parton, known as Lucy Rose is an English singer-songwriter from Warwickshire, England. Her debut album, Like I Used To was released in September 2012. Lucy Rose released her second album Work It Out in 6 July 2015 on Columbia Records.

Lucy Rose’s sophomore album, Work It Out, marks appreciable changes for the singer/songwriter: it was recorded at London’s Snap Studios instead of largely in her parents’ living room, produced by Rich Cooper (Mark Knopfler, Mystery Jets), and embraces drums, keyboards, and pop production, in general, for a modified palette. The new direction is clearly a conscious one, moving from sparse, strummed acoustic indie folk to a driving, atmospheric, electronic sound, though all remains governed by Rose’s foamy vocal delivery. More enlivened arrangements include persistent drums, mixed high on the uptempo, rhythm-focused “Köln,” a song unlike anything on her debut. The shift is announced subtly at the start of the delicate opening track, “For You,” which begins with soft strummed guitar, quietly humming keyboards, and slide guitar effects, until the song breaks open with full drums, synths, and echoing vocals two-thirds of the way through. (This type of development takes place on the eventually little bit funky “My Life” as well.) “Fly High (Interlude)” and “She’ll Move” offer more ambient, reverb-loaded fare, the latter still beat-driven. Rose’s wispy, reedy tone both limits the volume of any production and provides the charm that sets her apart from much of the Lilith Fair-variety crowd. Engaging songwriting, with lyrics mostly of the love variety here, also anchor her solidly in worthwhile territory — Work It Out is far from a sellout-type effort. The move will surely attract some and alienate others, but her fragile, sometimes sultry carriage finds her more radio-ready without sacrificing distinctiveness. [A deluxe edition of Work It Out was issued simultaneously with five bonus tracks, including a live-in-studio version of Like I Used To’s “Shiver.”]

Currents is the third studio album by Australian psychedelic rock act Tame Impala, to be released on 17 July 2015 on Interscope Records. Like the group’s previous two albums, Currents was written, recorded, performed, and produced by primary member Kevin Parker.
In contrast to the psychedelic rock sound of those albums, Currents marks a shift to more dance-oriented music, with more emphasis placed on synthesizers than guitars. Parker was inspired to seek a change out of desire to hear Tame Impala’s music played in dance clubs and after an emotional experience listening to the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive”. Thematically, the record is about the process of personal transformation. Parker said, “It follows the progression of someone feeling like they are becoming something else. They’re becoming the kind of person they thought they’d never become.” For Currents, Parker returned to the seaside house in which he recorded the group’s first album, Innerspeaker (2010).

After a long break from making Tame Impala music, during which time Kevin Parker produced other people’s albums and played in side projects, 2015’s Currents shows that much has changed with the project. Like before, Parker recorded the album on his own, only this time without Dave Fridmann’s guiding hand and by mostly forsaking electric guitars in favor of a wealth of synthesizers, and this time out there’s a much more relaxed, intimate approach. In addition to the soft rock of the ’70s feel that permeates the sound, Parker adds elements of R&B and hip-hop to the mix, gets lyrically introspective in spots, and generally sounds like he’s either on the verge of a long nap or just waking up from one. These aren’t bad things when done right, and Parker’s prowess as a producer and musician makes most of Currents palatable, if not extremely exciting. However, by focusing on all these new elements, and by sleepwalking through at least half of the songs, this new way of doing things does a lot to frustrate the expectations of anyone looking to this album as another mind-blowing expression of guitar-heavy psych-pop. It’s hard to deny artists the chance for change or growth, and Parker seems dedicated to both here. Where you can fault them is if they don’t change or grow in an interesting or unique way. Great chunks of Currents sound like plenty of other bands and artists in 2015, especially since practically everyone with access to recording equipment did their own takes on midtempo, chilled-out R&B. Does Parker do it as well as others like Unknown Mortal Orchestra or Caribou? Sure, he does. Is it enough to make this album worth checking out? Yes, but it’s not enough to make it an improvement over his previous work. At Tame Impala’s best, they blend huge guitar sounds, melodic basslines, and vintage synths into sweeping psychedelic rock with energy and drive that feel hugely cinematic while still feeling real. There are only a couple times here when Parker comes close to that sweet spot. For example, the both “Let It Happen” and “Reality in Motion” have a good blend of guitars and synths and a sense of purpose that’s often missing elsewhere. There are far more times where he strays too far from his strengths and gets bogged down in meandering, overly smoothed-out sounds and meandering songs that deliver no real payoff or sound half-baked at best, like the embarrassingly weak “Cause I’m a Man.” It’s too bad that Parker stashed his guitars away instead of keeping them around to add to the mix. It’s definitely not a case of addition by subtraction; it’s quite the opposite. While Currents would have made a decent Kevin Parker solo album, people coming to the album and expecting to hear the Tame Impala they are used to will most likely end up quite disappointed.    ~~ AllMusic Review by Tim Sendra

Recorded live at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington, DC, October 7-8, 2013.

Recorded live in concert at Dumbarton Oaks in DC, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Stravinsky’s chamber concerto at the Washington estate for which it was originally named, ‘the ground beneath our feet’ brings together radically divergent examples of the concerto grosso, by composers ranging from Bach and Haydn to those of the present day, by way of modern masters Stravinsky and Steve Reich. True to their collegial creed, The Knights’ own contribution to the form – the title track, …the ground beneath our feet, recorded here for the first time – is a genuine group composition, collaborative from inception to interpretation. Also receiving its world premiere recording is the Concerto for Santur, Violin, and Orchestra, which represents the third collaboration between longtime friends and musical partners Colin Jacobsen and Siamak Aghaei, leading exponent of the Iranian santur, or hammered dulcimer. The Knights juxtapose these two original concerto grossi with four earlier examples of the form. Representing its apotheosis in the Baroque is the Concerto for Violin and Oboe by J.S. Bach, whose third Brandenburg Concerto provided the model for Stravinsky’s neoclassical masterpiece “Dumbarton Oaks.” Steve Reich’s Duet for Two Violins and Strings is dedicated to Yehudi Menuhin and “the ideals of international understanding which he practiced throughout his life.”

The concerto grosso is a Baroque concept and form, wherein a small group of soloists (the concertino) is pitted against a larger ensemble (the ripieno), and the alternations of material between these groups give the music its feeling of virtuosity and mounting excitement. This 2015 album by the Knights presents five pieces styled on the concerto grosso scheme, and the most authentic example is J.S. Bach’s Concerto for violin and oboe, a model for many composers exploring concertante ideas. Two works that take Bach as a jumping off point are Steve Reich’s minimalist Duet for two violins and strings, and Igor Stravinsky’s neo-classical “Dumbarton Oaks” Concerto, which invokes Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Taking the concerto grosso idea further afield, Colin Jacobsen and Siamak Aghei present their Concerto for santur (a trapezoidal hammered dulcimer), violin, and orchestra, and the group-composed work, …the ground beneath our feet, which includes the song, “Fade Away,” sung by vocalist Christina Courtin. The program has an eclectic feeling, due to its even mix of classical, modern, international, and folk elements, and this may be an attraction or a hindrance. Fans of crossover music will enjoy the Knights’ fluidity between different kinds of music, and the ease of their exchanges gives the album a feeling of spontaneity and freshness. However, strictly classical listeners may appreciate the Bach and Stravinsky more readily than the other less predictably structured pieces. –AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson

Recorded by SWR, January 2015, at Theaterhaus Stuttgart

In January 2015 musicians and listeners converged upon Stuttgart’s Theaterhaus for two consecutive nights to celebrate the 75th birthday of Eberhard Weber. The concerts centered around a specially commissioned 35-minute suite by Pat Metheny, with whom Weber had played and recorded back in the 1970s. Featuring Metheny, the SWR Big Band conducted by Helge Sunde, Gary Burton, bassist Scott Colley and Danny Gottlieb on drums, the composition was arranged around recordings of solos by Weber. Other performers during the two nights playing selections from Weber’s vast body of work were Weber’s longtime companions Jan Garbarek, Paul McCandless and arranger Michael Gibbs, all drawing ovations from the packed house. “A truly special event, this.” Michael Tucker, Jazz Journal.

The finest recordings of these works available! The Brazilian composer (we needn’t remind his most ardent supporters that he’s the most significant Latin American composer of all time) behind numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works lets his creative genius show on Choros (from the Portuguese verb chorar , “to weep”) Nos. 1-12 and Bachianas Brasileiras (“Brazilian Bach-pieces”) Nos. 1-9. Also includes a bonus disc of solo guitar music played by the distinguished Anders Miolin. Great notes in the booklet, too…highly recommended! – Gramophone Magazine

The works on these seven discs by Villa-Lobos are a marvel. The most interesting thing that he accomplished with these works are the varying lengths and unique combinations of instruments within the Choros and Bachianas Brasileiras blueprints. Choros No. 1 is a short guitar solo. Choros No. 11 is a 3 movement, hour long piano concerto. You get such a wide and eclectic variety that it doesn’t get stale. There’s a lot of music here. Bachianas No. 4 is especially note-worthy. You have the original piano solo as well as the much superior orchestral versions with this collection. No. 5 is set for soprano and “orchestra of cellos”. No. 3 for horns and trombone. You get the idea. There is such a wealth of ideas and originality in the Bachianas Brasileiras; using the idiom of Bach and filtering it through the Brazilian style. The Choros are a group of pieces that sound improvisational and wild, sculpted around the language of Brazilian street music. The playing here is phenomenal, and the sound quality is exceptional!

Recorded: 5 to 8 september 2014 at the church OF of laval en brie, France

After a first disc devoted to Schmelzer, enthusiastically hailed by the critics (‘Editor’s Choice’ Gramophone, ‘Choc’ of Classica), the ensemble Masques, conducted by Olivier Fortin, returns to Alpha with a programme combining works by Muffat, Kerll and Pachelbel along with those of a composer who has remained largely unknown and totally forgotten: Romanus Weichlein (1652–1706).
Benedictine monk, prefect and official composer of the Benedictine abbey of Säben, Romanus Weichlein left several collections of sonatas and masses as well as large chaconnes, magnificent works in the tradition of his compatriots Biber, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Pavel Josef Vejvanovský and Georg Muffat.
In this new programme, Masques presents both ensemble pieces and others for solo or two harpsichords (the second harpsichord being played by Skip Sempé ), always featuring the expressiveness, eloquence and profound interpretation for which it is known.

On The Soul Of The Ballad, Hank Crawford is backed by The Marty Paich Orchestra. The crossover sensation performs with effortless ease as he plays a dozen flawless ballads. With riveting arrangements, the repertoire includes the standouts “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” “Whispering Glass” and “Time Out For Tears.”

This Atlantic Lp has been repackaged in a classy audiophile reissue Lp by Mobile Fidelity. The soulful altoist Hank Crawford plays a dozen ballads while backed by the Marty Paich Orchestra and the sound reproduction is flawless. Unfortunately the quality of the music itself is not high at all. The repertoire includes more than its share of losers (including “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” “Whispering Grass” and “Time Out For Tears”), the arrangements are quite dull and Crawford does little more than caress the melodies. Definitely a lesser effort. –AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:05:06 minutes | 1,01 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  – Source: hyperion-records | @ Hyperion Records
Recorded: May 2014, Federation Concert Hall, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

Henri Herz—as much a phenomenon in 1830s Paris and for the ensuing decades in America as he has been derided since the curtain fell on his world of sparkle—wrote eight piano concertos. One is lost, so it is for the final time in this mini series that Howard Shelley and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra here get to put on their finest dancing shoes and perform the Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor (the one with which Herz conquered America in 1846) and three extended fantasies.

Recorded during May 2014 in the Federation Concert Hall, Hobart, Tasmania, this is the third volume from Hyperion devoted to the piano concertos of Henri Herz (1803-1888). It’s also Volume 66 in Hyperion’s ongoing series The Romantic Piano Concerto, which has unearthed a good deal of excellent material which would otherwise have lain dormant, undiscovered and neglected.
Born in Vienna in 1803 (though some say 1806) Heinrich Herz arrived in Paris in 1816 to study at the Paris Conservatoire. He became utterly Parisian, adopting Henri as his first name, and spent his long life largely touring around the world as a highly successful virtuoso pianist, building pianos in France, and teaching as a Professor of Piano at the Conservatoire.
His sort of music, sometimes light-hearted and light of tone, coupled with the need for dazzling dexterity, was thought of by some by the mid-1850s to be too superficial, and was viewed as no more than cheap Parisian musique du salon. Robert Schumann possibly had no greater bête noire than Herz, referring to him as a stenographer rather than composer, and writing his Phantasie satyrique (nach Henri Herz) to poke fun at what he perceived as worthless playing to easily-impressed crowds. Indeed, one of Schumann’s insults was to refer to music he despised as ‘Herzian’. Jeremy Nicholas has written extensively about Herz’s life and times and his contribution to 19th-century music, and his essays in the booklets of all four of Hyperion’s releases are well worth investigating to throw further light on this fascinating, near-forgotten and certainly neglected composer.
Herz wrote eight concertos for piano and orchestra, though one is lost, and with this release all seven survivors are now available on record. The second, presented here, was written around 1830, and opens profoundly with a long introduction for the orchestra in C minor. The mood does change during the concerto, the first movement ending in a bold and confident C major, and the last, a Rondo, is also in the major key. The slow movement, in E flat, is marked ‘Andantino cantabile con molt’ espressione’ and is a delight, Howard Shelley bringing out the singing melodies, which reminded me of Irish folk-songs, quite beautifully.
The Grand Polonaise Brillante, Op 30 is the earliest work here, written before 1830, and could be mistaken for Chopin. The two Fantaisies from around 1832 and 1850 make up the remainder of the programme and are based on works very popular at the time, by Donizetti and Rossini. The Grande fantaisie militaire sur La Fille du Régiment positively sparkles with wit, and the military orchestration towards the end, replete with percussion and piccolo certainly brought a smile to my face. Perhaps Schumann would not have been amused.
A lot of Herz’s writing for piano is fiendishly difficult and highly delicate, more filigree than barn-storming keyboard-bashing display, requiring sensitive handling. Howard Shelley shows all this off very successfully indeed, the light and bright-toned piano making the rapid, lithe passage-work crystal-clear, especially heard through the 24-bit download. Directed from the keyboard by Howard Shelley the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra contributes a lean clear sound in a credible concert-hall balance, all captured in fine sound by Hyperion’s engineers. Bravo! –Peter Joelson, Audiophile Audition

Recorded at L’église Saintviateur, D’Outremont, Montréal, Québec, Canada, 22, 23, 25 & 26 March 2009

The Planets is such a durable work that it shouldn’t be a surprise that it can thrive in a variety of arrangements. This version for brass quintet and organ, by Montreal composer and arranger Enrico O. Dastous, is especially felicitous. The organ’s timbral variety makes it a natural for Holst’s colorful score (and there have been some fine arrangements for organ solo) and the addition of brass, which prominently figure in the original orchestration, makes this a terrific instrumentation for an arrangement of the piece. Dastous’ version is notable for its restraint; with a combination of instruments that could be potentially used for bombast, he judiciously deploys them with close attention to Holst’s original, so when he does pull out all the stops — both literally and figuratively — the effect is hugely impressive. A great deal of credit goes to the performers, organist Mélanie Barney and the wonderfully named brass quintet Buzz Ensemble, who play with finesse, but who can also cut loose in the big moments. The music was recorded in Montreal’s Saint-Viateur d’Outremont Church, whose organ is versatile and powerful, and whose acoustics are conducive to music of this grandeur. The engineers also deserve acknowledgment for the naturalness of the sound; all the instruments sound marvelous and full, and the balance is superb. True fans of The Planets are likely to be delighted with this fabulous version of the piece, and the disc should also appeal to fans of music for brass and organ. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Eddins

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/96 kHz | Time – 03:12:55 minutes | 3.02 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Master, Official Digital Download  | Source: Q0buz | Artwork: Digital booklet | @ Sony Classical

Following his landmark recordings, “Beethoven – The Late Piano Sonatas” and “Bach – Partitas”, both of which has won him international acclaim, Igor Levit is now tackling another three major works: Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, and Frederic Rzewski’s Variations on “The People United Will Never Be Defeated”.

It is testament to Igor Levit’s invention and the command of his repertoire that in one release he is able to combine arguably two of history’s greatest sets of variations for the keyboard, complete alongside a classic of late 20th century piano music by contemporary composer Frederic Rzewski.
Levit comes with great pedigree when it comes to recording the works of Bach and Beethoven, with his 2013 Beethoven disc winning him the BBC Music Magazine Newcomer of the Year 2014 Award, the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artist Award 2014 and the ECHO 2014 for Solo Recording of the Year. His second recording, J.S. Bach’s Six Partitas in 2014, was Gramophone’s Disc of the Month.

Jackson 5 – ABC (1970/2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/192 kHz | Time – 38:11 minutes | 1,66 GB | Genre: Soul, R&B
Studio Master, Official Digital Download | Artwork: Front cover | @ Motown Records

With worldwide sales closing in on six million copies, the 1970 Jackson 5 album ABC remains among the group’s most successful. Containing two number one hit singles, both enduring classics, the album spent 50 weeks on the Billboard 200, peaking at number four.

Not even six months after the Jackson 5 – Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, Michael, and Tito – issued their debut long-player, Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5 (1969), the vocal quintet returned with ABC (1970), arguably the brothers’ most solid effort of the early ’70s. The Jacksons’ collective (and respective) talents, coupled with exemplary material and the finest behind the scenes crew Motown had to offer, were directly responsible for the enormous success that placed the LP at the crest of the R&B chart and into the Top Five of the pop survey, while the title track and the double-sided hit single “The Love You Save” b/w “I Found That Girl” all went directly to the number one position across the board. Not too shabby for a group whose oldest member was barely in his teens. Granted, the familiar tunes are undeniably the focal point, making it easy to overlook some of the other stellar selections. As was customary, Motown’s cache of house composers provide the lion’s share of the songs, most notably the Holland-Dozier-Holland-penned “(Come ‘Round Here) I’m the One You Need” – brought to prominence by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles – and Stevie Wonder’s “Never Had a Dream Come True,” which Wonder himself had recently included on his own Signed, Sealed & Delivered (1970). There are also a few contemporary nuggets from beyond the boundaries of Detroit, as “La-La (Means I Love You)” is derived from the up-and-coming Philly soul movement and “I’ll Bet You” was gleaned from George Clinton’s incipient incarnation of Funkadelic. However, the cuts credited to “the Corporation” – with Bobby Taylor and instrumentalists Deke Richards (guitar), Freddie Perren (keyboard), and Fonce Mizell (keyboards), as well as Motown founder Berry Gordy – were of primary significance not only on the ABC album, but within the entire Jackson 5 oeuvre.

Recorded: 1987–1988 at Eldorado Studios in Los Angeles, California

Jane’s Addiction may not have been a strict metal band, but their music was certainly full of traits inherent to metal substances: hard, gleaming, powerful. On „Nothing’s Shocking“, which captured the much too short-lived quartet at its very peak, they were a blazing metallic supernova–grooving up a streak across the sky one moment, setting off heavy rhythmic discharges the next. Feeding off radically diverse musical elements–from art and classic rock, to hard-core punk and funk–Jane’s Addiction was the last great precursor to the alternative revolution of 1991-92. Simultaneously, they were the sole inheritors of Led Zeppelin’s mantra to make a different kind of sprawling heavy rock, and that they did in spades.

Thematically, „Nothing’s Shocking“ set out to prove that no subject was beyond the gleam in lyricist/vocalist Perry Farrell’s (pronounced “peripheral”) eye. Serial killer Ted Bundy (“Ted, Just Admit It”), punk ideology as Eastern philosophy (“Pigs In Zen”), mystic romances (“Summertime Rolls”) and high-falutin’, early-morning thoughts (“Standing In The Shower…Thinking”) were all dissected through a psychologically-stimulating viewpoint, with a stream-of-consciousness delivery. Farrell’s tales also served the band as a guide to attack the canvas, and the musicians burned heroically behind him, providing the songs with an expansive set of musical colors. Guitarist Dave Navarro continuously exploded on the drop of a dime, while bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins proved to be among the most formidable rhythm sections in all of rock.
„Although Jane’s Addiction’s 1987 self-titled debut was an intriguing release (few alternative bands at the time had the courage to mix modern rock, prog rock, and heavy metal together), it paled in comparison to their now classic major-label release one year later, Nothing’s Shocking. Produced by Dave Jerden and Jane’s Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell, the album was more focused and packed more of a sonic wallop than its predecessor; the fiery performances often create an amazing sense that it could all fall apart at any second, creating a fantastic musical tension. Such tracks as ‘Up the Beach,’ ‘Ocean Size,’ and one of alt-rock’s greatest anthems, ‘Mountain Song,’ contain the spaciousness created by the band’s two biggest influences, Led Zeppelin and the Cure. Elsewhere, ‘Ted, Just Admit It…’ (about serial killer Ted Bundy) and the haunting yet gorgeous ‘Summertime Rolls’ stretched to epic proportions, making great use of changing moods and dynamics (something most alt-rock bands of the time were oblivious to). An incredibly consistent and challenging album, other highlights included the rockers ‘Had a Dad’ and ‘Pigs in Zen,’ the horn-driven ‘Idiots Rule,’ the jazz instrumental ‘Thank You Boys,’ and the up-tempo ‘Standing in the Shower…Thinking.’ Like most great bands, it was not a single member whose contribution was greater: Perry Farrell’s unique voice and lyrics, Dave Navarro’s guitar riffs and wailing leads, Eric Avery’s sturdy basslines, and one of rock’s greatest and most powerful drummers, Stephen Perkins. Nothing’s Shocking is a must-have for lovers of cutting-edge, influential, and timeless hard rock.“ –Greg Prato

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, and Columbia Records will celebrate the 80th birthday of legendary crooner Johnny Mathis with the release of Johnny Mathis: The Singles, a definitive four disc anthology, on September 25, 2015.

Born September 30, 1935, a then-teenaged Johnny Mathis signed with Columbia Records in 1956, first entering the Pop charts with his inaugural Columbia single, “Wonderful! Wonderful!” the following year.  Peaking at #14, “Wonderful! Wonderful!” laid the foundation, and predicted the future, for one of the most remarkable careers in pop music history, leading to a string of singles successes which includes perennials like “It’s Not For Me To Say,” “Chances Are,” “The Twelfth Of Never” and many others.

Johnny Mathis: The Singles brings together, for the first time in one anthology, every Johnny Mathis recording which was first issued for the singles market, as well as tracks released exclusively on compilations (1958’s Johnny’s Greatest Hits, considered the first “greatest hits” collection ever created by the music industry, 1959’s More Johnny’s Greatest Hits and 1981’s The First 25 Years–The Silver Anniversary Album).

31 of the 87 tracks on Johnny Mathis: The Singles, are being released on CD for the very first time.  The four-disc anthology compiles, for the very first time, every non-LP single side released for the label between 1956 and 1981.

“When over the course of a career you record as many songs as I have recorded, you tend to forget a few,” said Johnny Mathis. “Revisiting this music was a complete surprise. I was thrilled beyond belief that some of the songs that I recorded specifically for single records, some of which had simply disappeared once they had been released, are now going to be heard again. Listening to this collection, not only was I amazed at how great it sounds, but I was being reminded of some songs I had totally forgotten. It is my greatest hope that my fans will share my enthusiasm.”

Johnny Mathis is one of the longest-running artists on the Columbia Records label, with 17 million RIAA certified album and singles sales in the US alone.  A sublime vocalist whose approach to pop music transcends passing fads and trends, Johnny Mathis has performed songs in an incredible variety of styles and categories — from music composed for stage and film to golden era jazz standards, contemporary pop hits, and holiday music both sacred and secular — assuring his reputation as one of the most enduring traditional pop vocalists in music history.

Perhaps best-known for his landmark singles (three of his recordings–“Chances Are,” “It’s Not For Me To Say,” and “Misty”–have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame) Mathis was one of the very first musical artists to embrace the album concept and record fully-realized thematically and sonically coherent collections of songs.  His 1958 release, Johnny‘s Greatest Hits inaugurated the ongoing “greatest hits” anthology phenomenon becoming one of the most popular albums of all time after spending an unprecedented 490 continuous weeks (almost ten years) on the BILLBOARD Top Albums Chart; 1959’s Heavenly spent 295 consecutive weeks on the same chart.  Johnny Mathis was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2003.

Mathis had 18 Top 40 hits between 1957 and 1963 and 19 Top 40 albums between 1957 and 1978.  He has earned 10 gold, 4 platinum and 2 multi-platinum awards from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)

Mathis was a star student athlete in San Francisco who sang weekends at a local jazz club. Columbia Records’ George Avakian was in attendance during one performance, and famously wired back to the label office: “Have found phenomenal 19-year old boy who could go all the way. Send blank contracts.” After his jazzy debut LP was largely ignored upon its release in 1956, Mathis began working closely with Columbia’s vice-president and producer Mitch Miller to develop an unbeatable lush pop style, picking romantic ballads that made extensive use of his recognizable, vibrato-heavy croon.

During his time on Columbia, Mathis was essentially recording for two markets: the singles market and the albums market. While he would enjoy success in both realms, it was his non-LP singles that first introduced the world to his distinct gifts: in 1957, his firstColumbia single “Wonderful! Wonderful!” peaked at No. 14; follow-up “It’s Not For Me To Say” rose to No. 5, and “Chances Are” topped the charts.

Altogether, Mathis logged 18 singles on Billboard’s Top 40 between 1957 and 1963 (and has seen 43 of his singles chart on Billboard Hot 100 from 1957 to 1981). After a tenure on his own Global label from 1963 to 1967 (initially distributed by Mercury and chronicled by Legacy in The Complete Global Albums Collection box set), Johnny returned to Columbia, where he records to this day.
