Miriam Makeba’s sixth and final RCA Victor album largely abandoned the South African focus of her earlier recordings (particularly her most recent release, the joint LP An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba, which was devoted to songs in South African tribal languages) for a collection of mainstream pop on which she was backed by an orchestra conducted by Sid Bass.

By September 1965, when the album was recorded for a 1966 release, the music industry had weathered the sea of change brought on by the Beatles, but there was less room in it for an exotic novelty like Makeba, who had carved out a niche on the fringes of the folk revival and the supper club circuit. She responded by recording “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof in Bass’ bossa nova arrangement and putting her talent for languages to use by singing songs in Yiddish and Hebrew. Four tunes were contributed by her bass player, William Salter, and sounded like traditional pop efforts. There were also a couple of songs in the South African idiom that sounded like her earlier recordings: “Oxgam,” which recalled “The Click Song” from her first album, and “Muntu (Lullaby).” And she re-recorded “Where Does It Lead?” from that album, perhaps pondering that question herself. The Magic of Makeba was a compromised effort that disappointed old fans and did not win new ones. Shortly after its release, Makeba parted ways with RCA; she was quickly taken up by Mercury Records.

Throughout her time as a concert singer in 1960s America Miriam Makeba was promoted as the embodied voice of a sonic, imagined Africa. Where her white audiences were attracted to the complete „otherness“ of her African blackness, her black American audiences saw themselves – or imagined versions of themselves – put on stage, and built solidarities between their own struggle and the struggle against apartheid.

In this essay, I argue that the discourses that followed Makeba’s voice and body reflected the evolving attitudes of America towards Africa, and, through Africa, its contradictory relationship to its own African American citizens. Makeba played on these discourses to craft a political and musical identity in solidarity with black and diasporic causes. This identity, embodied in the persona of ‘‘Mama Africa,’’ allowed Makeba the flexibility to speak to and for her fellow (South) Africans with cultural authority. By joining the oft-opposed positions of „Africa“ and „The World,“ Makeba became what I’m calling an African Cosmopolitan.

Austin native duo Missio is an electronic alternative rock band that specializes in emotive, dark tunes. The duo is comprised of two separate artists, frontman and vocalist Matthew Brue and producer David Butler. The pair made their debut at SXSW in 2015 and have been a force to be reckoned with ever since. Loner is their debut studio LP.

Two bearded Austin, TX musical misfits with an affinity for D.I.Y. electronic/altproduction, clever lyrical quips, and sticky alternative hooks, Missio regularly subvert expectations. Case in point, an upbeat lullaby-esque melody about, “Throwing middle fingers in the air” introduced the duo—Matthew Brue & David Butler—to audiences everywhere with the aptly titled breakout single, “Middle Fingers.” At the beginning of 2017, the track exploded on SiriusXM’s Alt Nation, and the band landed a deal with RCA Records. This signature style stands out as the product of their unique and undeniable union as well as years of dedication. Founded in 2014 as a side project for Matthew, longtime friend David joined him after one studio session. For all of the harmony between them, their respective backgrounds represent something of a Yin and Yang. Born and raised in Colorado, Matthew received classical piano training as a child and toured the world in a choir. In Houston, seven years his senior David “grew up in the least musical household ever” and didn’t pick up guitar until the age of 16. David escaped the Office Space-style corporate world in order to pursue a career as a producer and audio engineer, while Matthew spent a year living in a remodeled 1974 Airstream, “learning how to write better songs.” They had crossed paths many times in the Austin music scene, but their initial collaboration would prove life-changing—literally. David transformed the garage into a professional recording studio, ripping down walls by hand, tearing up the floors, constructing a control room, setting up iso booths, and designing a veritable creative hive for the band. He would handle the bulk of the production as Matthew penned lyrics and took on lead vocals. In between their SXSW debut in 2015 and tours with Australia’s Sasia and K. Flay (for which David built Missio’s light rigs), they wrote and recorded countless songs. “I Don’t Even Care About You” landed at #7 on Spotify’s Top 50 Global Viral Chart after popping up on the Fresh Finds Playlist. As buzz grew, their music appeared on MTV’s Scream and Finding Carter, Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club, and in a Victoria’s Secret spot. With its keyboard boom, handclaps, and sweeping chant, “Middle Fingers” ignited their profile, rhyming social media-worthy lines like, “I am tired of seeing pretty people everywhere” and “I used to drink with whisky now I’m stuck with Perrier.” As Missio prepare their full-length debut Loner for release, Matthew and David are on a mission to connect with listeners everywhere.

Blues fingerpicking guitarist, singer and sharecropper Mississippi John Hurt was born in the heart of Mississippi Hill Country, along the veiny tributaries of the great American river. His moving renditions of “Frankie” and “Spike Driver Blues” were included in Harry Smith’s American Anthology of Folk Music in 1952 and were vitally influential on the Greenwich Village folk music revival of the 1960s as well as John Fahey’s development of the American Primitive Guitar genre. Single LP with single pocket tip-on jacket with soft touch finish.

“American Epic” compilation series is a collection of releases of music associated with the film series “The American Epic”, a historical documentaries are a journey back in time to the “Big Bang” of modern popular music.

In the 1920s, as radio took over the pop music business, record companies were forced to leave their studios in major cities in search of new styles and markets. Ranging the mountains, prairies, rural villages, and urban ghettos of America, they discovered a wealth of unexpected talent. The recordings they made of all the ethnic groups of America democratized the nation and gave a voice to everyone. Country singers in the Appalachians, Blues guitarists in the Mississippi Delta, Gospel preachers across the south, Cajun fiddlers in Louisiana, Tejano groups from the Texas Mexico border, Native American drummers in Arizona, and Hawaiian musicians were all recorded. For the first time, a woman picking cotton in Mississippi, a coalminer in Virginia or a tobacco farmer in Tennessee could have their thoughts and feelings heard on records played in living rooms across the country. It was the first time America heard itself.

This is not “remastering”, in the normal sense, but something closer to fine art restoration. The intent is not for people to marvel at the antiquity of these discs, but rather to experience them as vital, immediate performances that speak to us as directly as they did on the day they were recorded—not simply great art for their time, but great art for all times. Engineer Nicholas Bergh has reassembled this recording system from original parts and it is now the only one left in the world. The system consists of a single microphone, a towering six-foot amplifier rack, and a live record-cutting lathe, powered by a weight-driven pulley system of clockwork gears. The musicians have roughly three minutes to record their song direct to disc before the weight hits the floor. In the 1920s, they called this “catching lightning in a bottle”.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 42:42 minutes | 557 MB | Genre: Indie

Connect the Dots is the second studio album by critically acclaimed American indie pop band MisterWives. Produced by the diverse, talented Butch Walker, Connect the Dots is a bright, colorful, and explosive experience that paints a fitting portrait of the city that never sleeps. That said, with this new album, MisterWives has created an evolutionary follow-up to their successful 2015 debut, Our Own House.

MisterWives’ sophomore effort is a buoyant, groove-heavy affair that builds upon the joyous ’80s-influenced indie pop sound from their 2015 debut. A tight 11 tracks long, Connect the Dots is so infectiously charming it could border on the precious, but the New York-based sextet are so committed and exuberant that it’s difficult not to get swept up by their youthful energy. On the defiant Sia-meets-No Doubt dancehall opener “Machine,” MisterWives pile horns, driving drums, and elastic bass over empowering lyrics like “We’re not part of your machine!” before sidling up next to like-minded contemporaries Paramore on the sunny “Chasing This.” Highlights abound on Connect the Dots. “Only Human” features one of their strongest melodic hooks, while the anthemic, crowd-ready “Revolution” rallies listeners with cries of “Let’s start a revolution/Where we all stand as one” in a noble attempt to tackle larger social issues. The rollicking “Out of Tune Piano” stomps with Regina Spektor-like mirth, while “Oh Love” flexes its rock muscle with heavy vocal distortion and jagged riffs. Standing high above it all, closer “Let the Light In” is the album’s standout. The hard-hitting new wave epic is pure Eurythmics, right down to vocalist Mandy Lee’s Annie Lennox harmonics. While the rest of Connect the Dots is a solid step forward for the group, this track is the most exciting hint at their potential. Defeating the specter of the sophomore slump with confidence and a smile, MisterWives infuse their colorful sonic spectrum with enough new ideas to evolve and mature with grace.

With over 25 years under his belt, Boston-based blues guitarist Monster Mike Welch is handily considered a seasoned veteran of the international blues scene at just a mere 37 years old. Right Place, Right Time is the result of this inspired collaboration, born out of a mutual love and respect for the classic blues era of the 50s and 60s and artists such as Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Elmore James and B.B. King. Accompanying Welch and Ledbetter is an all-star cast featuring pianist/organist Anthony Geraci, bassist Ronnie James Weber and drummer Marty Richards, along with special guests Laura Chavez on guitar and saxophonists Doug James and Sax Gordon. For Monster Mike Welch and Mike Ledbetter this album is not just about being in the right place at the right time, but knowing what to do with it when you find yourselves there.

Adorned with the nickname Monster Mike by actor/comedian Dan Aykroyd at the tender age of 13, Welch has since carved out a successful living as a highly accomplished and in-demand guitarist. To date, Welch has released six albums under his own name and in 2001, he joined the ranks of one of New England s most beloved blues institutions, Sugar Ray and the Bluetones. In addition, Welch has performed and recorded with Duke Robillard, Nick Moss, Johnny Winter, Darrell Nulisch and more recently, the Knickerbocker All-Stars, which has featured among others, Jimmie Vaughan and the aforementioned Robillard. No stranger to the Delta Groove family, Welch also appears on recordings by the Mannish Boys and Sugaray Rayford, as well as playing a central role in the critically acclaimed album, Fifty Shades of Blue, by Anthony Geraci and the Boston Blues All Stars. Welch has received two consecutive Blues Music Award nominations by the Blues Foundation for Instrumentalist-Guitar beginning in 2016.

Chicago’s own Mike Ledbetter has had nothing short of a rich and multi-dimensional musical journey thus far. Before making a home in West Side Chicago and Memphis style blues, Ledbetter set his feet in various genres ranging from soul, gospel, pop, jazz, and even spent the better part of a decade performing on Chicago opera stages. Spending eight years under the tutelage of his mentor, Nick Moss, Ledbetter recorded and toured the world with Moss as his lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. In this short time, he has made more than a lasting impression and developed a legion of fans. He’s also worked with and earned the respect of many of his heroes and influences (Anson Funderburgh, Barrelhouse Chuck, Billy Flynn, Curtis Salgado, Jimmy Johnson, Lazy Lester, Ronnie Earl) as a member of the new school of blues/soul musician whose style is cemented in its Golden Era.

This New York-based unit have developed a near telepathic relationship playing together since 2006 and has developed an individual language and a unique approach to playing jazz standards. Having recorded dozens of albums of original music (each of the members are notable composers & bandleaders) the NYSQ embraces the freedom of performing music based on a simpler, standard jazz repertoire, focusing in particular on the songs that they grew up with.

It’s now approaching twelve years since the New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ) came into being, its core personnel taking time out from their multifarious individual projects to revel in the shared brief of refashioning familiar and lesser-known jazz standards. Their new release Sleight of Hand builds on their catalog of five previous album recordings (most recently, The New Straight Ahead and Power of 10, on Whirlwind) as saxophonist Tim Armacost, pianist David Berkman and drummer Gene Jackson welcome double bassist Daiki Yasukagawa back into the fold.

Describing the NYSQ’s beginnings, David Berkman recalls: “We were at the period where we’d all done a lot of original recordings of our own music, as composers and leaders; and then, through a series of circumstances, we came together as a quartet with the particular mission of taking on standards, but arranging them to create a feeling that was similar to the original albums we recorded. It soon became apparent that audiences really got into the idea and the fun of seeing how we would expand the harmonic, tonal and rhythmic aspects into a more modern frame while always referencing the music’s origins.”

This is a band that regularly plays and performs together, so there’s a common bond which brings out the best in the arrangements they conjure. Recorded at the end of an international tour – in the beautiful, mountainous location of Lake Yamanaka, close to Mount Fuji (the quartet enjoys a special affinity with Japan) – Sleight of Hand’s eight numbers reflect the band’s spontaneous, transformational approach, with the title track (based on Gershwin’s ‘But Not For Me’) irresistibly playful.

Mal Waldron’s ‘Soul Eyes’ and Thelonious Monk’s ‘Ask Me Now’ swing with respective vibrancy and jauntiness, while the metrical changes and perky rhythms of ‘This I Dig of You’ pick up on Hank Mobley’s classic Blue Note album origins; and the various key modulations in ‘Lover Man’ are a world away from Billie Holiday’s lingering vocal lines as Armacost’s spritely soprano responds swiftly to Jackson’s syncopated drum accents.

1940s song ‘Detour Ahead’ – perhaps mostly familiar in composer Herb Ellis’s guitar setting – translates into a luscious alto and piano-led ballad, sensitively buoyed by Yasukagawa’s bass shaping; Jules Styne/Sammy Cahn favorite ‘I Fall In Love Too Easily’ is treated to sparkling, percussion-led animation; and Armacost’s rich tenor lyricism in Duke Ellington’s ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ is ravishingly restrained.

David Berkman relates that the NYSQ’s journey continues to energize them: “Going into the recording studio is still as challenging as it is enjoyable, though I guess we feel like we don’t need to prove anything anymore! And though we like to pull out obscure tunes, it’s also important to include touchstones for our listeners, as everyone relates to them emotionally – there’s still a lot of awareness there. These are such great melodies, you can do almost anything with them – and, as always with improvisation, that sense of ‘What’s happening today?’ remains exciting. It’s all about a moment.”

First of all, that voice. Anything but refined, Nick Hakim’s singing is cloaked in a kind of otherness. A distant song, as if from another galaxy: the American who grew up in Washington before casting anchor in Brooklyn unfurls around her a diaphanous soul. And it certainly is soul that lies at the heart of her magnificent first album Green Twins. It is as if Nick Hakim had resuscitated Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, but taking care to make them over a little, with a dash of folk here, or a blush of pop there. Through the melody there runs here an unexpected rhythm or there a surprising instrument: her musical imagination is vast enough to take in South American music she heard at home (her mother is Chilean and her father is Peruvian), or hip-hop from her teenage years… On Roller Skates, a deliberately rickety drum-machine backs up a piercing guitar, itself sickly-sounding, while Nicky Hakim’s voice, in a halo of reverb, transforms the song into a waking dream. Every melody on Green Twins is bathed in a softness (never blandness) that reinforces the music’s dreamlike quality. Because even if Hakim’s voice could thrill fans of Curtis Harding, Cody Chesnutt, Roland Gift and Bilal, the music here is all very much her own, so much so that one wonders if she has in fact invented the gospel music of the third millennium. To be sure, this is the most spellbinding Qobuzissime of the year.

Nils Wülker is a German jazz trumpet player and composer. The recipient in 2013 of the ECHO Jazz Award (the German jazz “Grammy”) as Instrumentalist of the Year in the Brass category, Nils Wülker has since won the German Jazz Award in Gold for his Album “Safely Falling”. His eighth album “Up” was released by Warner Music in February 2015 and entered successfully both the German album charts and the jazz charts. “On” his newest effort released on June 2, 2017.

Nils Wülker has grown in the last twelve years to be one of the most successful jazz trumpeters and jazz composers in Europe. Born in Bonn in 1977, he was taking piano lessons at seven, switched to the classical trumpet when he was nine, finally discovered jazz at the age of sixteen on an exchange year in the USA and progressed via Us3’s smash hit “Cantaloop” and its original composer Herbie Hancock to Miles Davis. Back in Germany, he was picked in 1996 for North Rhine-Westphalia’s JugendJazzOrchester NRW, in which he played until he began studying jazz at the Hanns Eisler conservatoire in Berlin. He kept playing throughout his studies, whether in Peter Herbolzheimer’s BuJazzO, the RIAS Bigband or Thärichen’s Tentett, and by the time he graduated in 2002, Nils Wülker had already released his enthusiastically received and highly acclaimed debut album “High Spirits” – with the likes of Gene Calderazzo and Orlando Le Fleming – as the first German jazz musician in the SONY Music artist roster. The following year, the 26-year-old composed, played and produced his own new music, released on the album “Space Night Vol. 10 Jazz” (with Wolfgang Muthspiel, Jochen Rückert et al.), to accompany Bavarian TV’s all-night images from outer space.

Nils Wülker released five albums of his own between 2005 and 2012 on his own label EAR Treat Music with such guests as Dominic Miller, Torun Eriksen, Silje Nergaard and Ulita Knaus, further establishing his reputation as a “great tunesmith” (DIE ZEIT) and an “exceptional composer” (Crescendo). Meanwhile he was touring with his own band, was to be seen and heard as the guest artist of the Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, the quartet of Sting buddy Dominic Miller, or else was on tour in Europe with Lee Ritenour, Dave and Don Grusin, Will Kennedy and Wolfgang Schmid as the “Hang All Stars” or Ute Lemper. Nils Wülker was also heading the star-studded “Jazz Baltica Ensemble” (2011) with new arrangements of his own compositions, making remixes for Gregory Porter, Hugh Masekela and Laura Lopez Castro, and producing albums for singer Cécile Verny and harmonica player Tollak and a track for German hip hop artist Samy Deluxe.

– “A great tunesmith” (DIE ZEIT)
– “German jazz miracle” (Der Spiegel)
– “Nils Wülker, who lives in Hamburg, is not just a great trumpeter, but a composer of powerful and very emotional jazz songs.” (KulturSPIEGEL)
– “A special jazz path on the edges of which tunes sprout like lovely blossoms.” (Die Welt)
– “Nils Wülker is both authentic and virtuosic.” (Jazz thing)

Guitars in the foreground, musclebound rhythms and grandiose vocals: It never occurred to Nickelback to take up deep house or electro dub on their ninth album, then. With Feed The Machine, the Canadians remain faithful to their fundamentals, balancing hard riffs with addictive melodies. The gang from Alberta still has the major advantage that is singer Chad Kroeger, virtuoso vocalist whose voice is paraded to perfect effect amidst the guitar tsunami that he unleashes alongside his rhythm guitarist Ryan Peake. One could, of course, accuse Nickelback of resting on their laurels somewhat, but you’ve got to admit that the XXL hard stadium rock of, Feed The Machine does what it says on the tin.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 46:24 minutes | 481 MB | Genre: Alternative

Inspired by Rimbaud’s poem, Ophelie, Bologna-based trio Ofeliadorme live up to their name. Seductive, tender, immersive, and shrouded in a mystery befitting ancient prose, theirs is a crossroads between the serenity of Cocteau Twins, Portishead’s emotive darkness, and PJ Harvey’s shape shifting pop qualities. It’s ambient, New Wave, dreamy, stargazing electronica. One part foggy warmth, another stark desperation, the results are truly unique, and utterly compelling.

Secret Fires is the result of a very specific choice, where three musicians decide that restraint can be far more effective than constant demonstrations of strength, in a total lack of selfishness. Michele Postpischl, a drummer with a delicate touch, Tato Izzia with his deep synths, and Francesca Bono’s velvet vocals, guitars and keyboards, aren’t afraid to show that vulnerability’s always lurking below the surface. A work of balance and depth. Secret Fires is all about what’s under the surface, it unfolds itself through images. As Howie B said: ‘Imagine someone running through the fields and getting bigger, bigger, BIGGER!!! Eight tracks, 8 like oxygen atomic number, that is to say, something we breath, something that makes life possible. The album is inspired by the complexity of both nature and human nature, by body prayers as well as the loneliness of the stars.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 01:09:03 minutes | 747 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: Qobuz | Digital Booklet | © ONJ Records

Whether appearing solo as a guitarist or leading orchestras whose personnel and size couldn’t vary more — they range from the quartet to the big-band —, Olivier Benoit’s sole obsession has always been to further his explorations of territories still barely represented on the official map of contemporary music.

Appointed for a term of four and half years at the head of the Orchestre National de Jazz (ONJ), the composer and guitarist Olivier Benoit inaugurates with his musicians the eleventh orchestra in the history of the institution. Motivated by the desire to have an intergenerational orchestra open to multiple stylistic registers, Olivier Benoit picked ten musicians of rare character, ranging from new talents on the French jazz scene to instrumentalists with years of experience to their credit, all players firmly committed to research in various fields of music. The result produced an ONJ ready to take on every aesthetic challenge possible, an orchestra capable of fulfilling the ambition lying at the heart of his project : to free genres from the compartments which separate them.

Olivier Benoit brings his EUROPA project to a close by setting a northerly course with his musicians that takes them to the capital of Norway. Oslo is an atypical city. Nestling in the heart of triumphant natural surroundings, it has constantly pursued its architectural and cultural transformation, somewhere in between ancient tradition and the incredibly modern. At the close of the last century, this city was already setting the tone for new artistic concepts. To accompany the capital of Norway in music and establish a subjective portrait of the city, first an immersion was necessary. Living to the rhythm of Oslo’s seasons constituted a vital source of inspiration that provided the composition with its starting point.

Exploring this fourth European capital gave Olivier Benoit the desire to associate words and speech with the project, hence the two-voice evocation that he imagined with the complicity of contemporary Oslo writer and poet Hans Petter Blad. This singular author, a writer who chisels into the chiaroscuro of souls, selected excerpts from his writings forming a series of realist poems in which the music composed by the ONJ’s artistic director finds its echo. To incarnate Hans Petter’s texts — which the author himself has translated from Norwegian into English — Olivier Benoit chose Maria Laura Baccarini, a multifaceted artist who is a singer and actress.

As an orchestral suite whose movements offer a very broad dynamic range — alternating moments of intimism and melancholy (the image of a hearing of confession), hypnotic atmospheres and powerful crescendos — EUROPA OSLO plunges us with rare intensity into the very heart of the city and the flesh of its inhabitants, moving between wounds, wanderings and renaissances. The panoramic universe of Olivier Benoit continues to draw from multiple sources — jazz, repetitive music and progressive rock — and they provide a made-to-measure setting for the elegiac pen of Hans Petter Blad. The outcome is a sensitive tribute to Oslo nourished by the expressive strengths of each of the orchestra’s musicians in the company of Maria Laura Baccarini, here an inhabited performer. An ultimate opus, magnetic and thrilling.

Transparent Water is the new studio collaboration between 7-time GRAMMY-nominated pianist-composer-bandleader Omar Sosa and London-based Senegalese singer and kora master Seckou Keita. The project idea grew out of Sosa’s impromptu addition to a mid–2012 date with drummer Marque Gilmore at the CLF Art Café in London, in what was Sosa and Keita’s first musical encounter. Profoundly moved by the experience, Omar told Seckou he wanted to invite him to work together on a future recording project.

Cuban Pianist Omar Sosa and Senegalese kora player and vocalist Seckou Keita have assembled an extraordinary album seamlessly melding Latin American and West African music. Additional guest instrumentalists bring with them a host of other sounds predominantly emanating from the Far East. The koto is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument whilst the sheng is a Chinese mouth-blown free reed instrument consisting of vertical pipes. The bawu is a Chinese wind instrument and the geomungo is a traditional Korean type of zither. Notwithstanding that the kora is one of the main instruments on the album, it would have been useful to map every instrument played to their respective tracks, since presumably only listeners with expert knowledge would have been in a position to recognise all of them. But this is a very minor quibble and on an impressionistic level doesn’t in any way detract from the appreciation of the music.
