This tribute to the great torch songstress Julie London, one of Jacintha’s favorites, is a spectacular recording with outstanding sonics and performances including “Cry Me A River,” “Light My Fire,” “Willow Weep For Me,” “God Bless The Child” and “Don’t Smoke In Bed.” With Harry Allen (sax), Ron Eschete (guitar) and Larry Bunker (vibes). Intimate, sexy, seductive. Stunning performances of Willow Weep For Me and Something Cool feature the super talented Allen on tenor sax.

The very spare instrumental arrangements also lend themselves to extremely high quality audiophile sound and Joe Harley (producer) and Mike Ross (engineer) have outdone themselves on this recording, creating sonics and fidelity that are some of the best ever from Groove Note.

Julie London, the legendary torch song singer and pop balladeer of the 60s and early 70s, passed away in Los Angeles two years ago. The singer who had a huge hit with her version of Cry Me A River still retains a large fan base worldwide and has always been one of Jacintha’s favorite singers. It only seems natural that for this, her fourth album for Groove Note, the sensual and talented Jacintha, no mean balladeer herself, has chosen to record and dedicate an album to Julie.

“This album is a sheer joy to listen to from the first note. This may be Jacintha’s best album yet. The silky, smooth, and sensuous voice of Jacintha is reproduced with an utterly natural quality, revealing every nuance of her phenomenal intonation, phrasing, breath control, and vocal modulation.” – Dave Glackin, Positive Feedback Online

Years in the making and with a cast of thousands and a budget in the millions, this has been an epic effort! The effort was certainly epic and, after a gap of almost three years since her last Groove Note release, the wait has been well worth it.Jacintha Goes To Hollywood sees the sensual and seductive-voiced chanteuse take on the challenge of performing theme songs and other well-known movie related tunes. The program features an eclectic mix of musical material, from the almost over familiar “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” and “California Dreaming” to “On Days Like These” from the original British version of The Italian Job. Her almost solemn and low-key performance of “California Dreaming” will completely blow you away as will her thrillingly dynamic and bossa tingled take on “The Windmills Of Your Mind.”
Featuring Anthony Wilson on guitar, Iskandar Ismail on piano, Larry Goldings on Hammond B-3 and Ricky Woodward on sax, the album was recorded all analogue at 15 inches per second on two-inch 24-track masters mixed down to half-inch stereo at 30 inches per second stereo at Sunset Sound by Joe Harley (producer) and Mile Ross (engineer). The stereo masters were transferred to DSD by David Glaser at Airshow Mastering for the mastering of the Stereo Hybrid SACD.

Let’s face it: most people who are not seasoned jazz listeners aren’t going to comprehend someone as challenging as the late Betty Carter. The best way to get people who are “jazzophobic” to start listening to vocal jazz is to expose them to artists who are quite accessible but still have taste and integrity — people like Jacintha, whose Jacintha Goes to Hollywood is a perfect example of a jazz vocal disc that is very easy to absorb even if one isn’t a seasoned jazz listener. This 2007 recording finds the Singapore native turning her attention to songs that were heard in well-known films, and her torchy, understated approach serves her well on material ranging from the Mamas & the Papas’ “California Dreaming” (a ’60s smash that was heard in the 1995 film Chung King Express) to the Doris Day-associated “Que Será Será” (which was used in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much in 1956) to Michel Legrand’s “The Summer Knows” (from the 1971 film The Summer of ’42). Technically, the title Jacintha Goes to Hollywood is inaccurate, because not all of these songs are identified with Hollywood films; Chung King Express, for example, is a Chinese film, and one of the best things on this album is an English-language performance of the gorgeous theme from the 1966 French film A Man and a Woman (or, as it is known in France, Un Homme et une Femme). Perhaps a better title for this 47-minute CD would have been Jacintha Goes to the Movies. But in the grand scheme of things, that is only a minor point. What matters the most is that Jacintha has delivered a musical tribute to movies that is as memorable as it is rewarding. –AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson

Singapore songstress Jacintha picks up the tempo in her first bossa nova session for Groove Note. Featuring a program of some of the most well-known classics of the genre including several Jobim favorites like “So Nice,” “Desafinado,” “Dindi,” “Corcovado” as well as less familiar tunes like “O Ganso” and “So Danco Samba,” The Girl From Bossa Nova is a striking change of pace for Jacintha that will enthrall all of her fans. Bright and breezy and with superb instrumentals from tenor Harry Allen with his Stan Getz-style solos and acoustic guitarist John Pisano. The album is given the supreme finishing touch by the magical playing of Brazilian master percussionist Paulihno Da Costa.

The Girl From Bossa Nova (Groove Note) is not from bossa nova actually. Or Brazil. In fact, she is not even from anywhere in Latin America. Vocalist Jacintha is from Singapore, but she hopscotches her way through a handful of outstanding Brazilian tunes on this CD. Working with a group that includes legendary Brazilian percussionist Paulinho da Costa, Jacintha’s sultry vocals move quite easily into bossa nova mode from her usual torch-singer style. The problem with the album is that we have heard many of these tunes (“Desafinado,” “Wave,” “How Insensitive,” “Corcovado,” “Waters of March,” etc.) countless times by better singers. Songs by composers like Vinicius de Moraes, Tom Jobim or Luiz Bonfa are not serviced by Jacintha’s inability to dig into the saudade (melancholy) that makes their songs so distinctive and timeless. –Felix Contreras, JazzTimes

“Excellent late-night listening…mesmerizing.” — Judith Schlesinger

The accolades Singapore-born vocalist Jacintha has garnered are too numerous to list. Suffice it to say those looking for exquisite female jazz vocal performances that pay homage to the “old school” but with contemporary sensibilities will find Jacintha much to their liking. Her first two releases, Autumn Leaves and Here’s To Ben, have become certified audiophile jazz classics. Her third release for Groove Note, Lush Life, features silky string arrangements by pianst Bill Cunliffe. With Anthony Wilson (guitar) and Dmitri Matheny (flugel), this is one of her best-sounding albums to date. This recording quality, as has come to be expected from her previous albums, is nothing short of exceptional.

This is Jacintha’s third album for Groove Note, and her first with strings. Very popular in her native Singapore, she’s beginning to get a worldwide reputation, and this release demonstrates why: Her voice is lovely, with clear diction and expressive, naturalistic phrasing. She draws the listener into a warm intimacy from the first track, “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” a rarely covered and beautiful song with the perfect “rainy night in Paris” ambience supplied by Frank Marocco on accordion. Other highlights include a bluesy but refreshingly non-wailing “Black Coffee,” with a fine, understated solo by Bill Cunliffe on piano; he’s also good on the silky bossa “Manha de Carneval,” where Anthony Wilson’s melodic plucking contrasts nicely with the smoothness of the strings. Another unusual but happy choice, “When We Were Young,” showcases the superb flügelhorn of Dmitri Matheny, which enhances four other tracks as well. Eight of the ten selections are ballads and, since Jacintha delivers her message straight and serene, the overall feel is quiet, sultry, and relaxing. After slooow readings of “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “Lush Life,” and “September Song,” Joe LaBarbera’s brushes and drum accents on “Harlem Nocturne” provide a welcome texture and pulse. The surprise of the CD is the startlingly original, soaring introduction to the vastly overplayed “Summertime,” where Cunliffe’s string arrangement evokes both Gershwin and modern French composers. This is excellent late-night listening; the local male vote was “mesmerizing.” –AllMusic Review by Judith Schlesinger

Picking Up the Pieces is Jewel’s 14-track LP through Sugar Hill Records. She self-produced the record – with her first producer, the late Ben Keith, always in mind – and hired a band comprised mostly of Neil Young collaborators to help her strip away the veneer she’d built up over two decades in the music business.

“This is just me. These are my thoughts. These are my feelings. This is my poetry,” Jewel said. “It really felt like returning to a part of me that I didn’t mean to lose, but with time and relationships and life and surviving and dealing, you take on new things and not all of them are great.”

The last five years have been full of change, both personal and creative, for the 41-year-old Alaska-born singer. Her 4-year-old son Kase was born, but her marriage fell apart. She wrote her memoir, Never Broken, and recorded a pair of children’s albums. Picking Up the Pieces captures some of these moments on “Love Used to Be” and “Mercy,” but also gathers longtime unrecorded live favorites like “Carnivore” and “Boy Needs a Bike.” The album also includes “My Father’s Daughter,” a stunning autobiographical collaboration with Dolly Parton.

“I was trying to keep my mind quiet and honestly get back to something I feel like I’d lost touch with in my life. It was really an exercise in shutting out fear. I was giving myself permission to be exactly who and what I was.”

Picking Up the Pieces contains a not-so-subtle allusion to the title of Jewel’s 1995 debut Pieces of You. Twenty years later, the singer/songwriter is acknowledging how she’s strayed from the folky fragility of her beginnings and is now ready to reconnect with her roots, going so far as to sign with folk label Sugar Hill for Picking Up the Pieces. Over the course of this hour-long effort, Jewel does find some space for guests — Rodney Crowell shows up on “It Doesn’t Hurt Right Now,” Dolly Parton on “My Father’s Daughter” — and there are gentle accouterments like moaning sitars, full rhythm sections, and gliding pianos, all arrangements that are felt more than heard. Despite these gentle touches, Picking Up the Pieces feels unadorned but not necessarily simple. Often, it’s possible to feel the weight of the two decades dividing Pieces of You and Picking Up the Pieces, usually in the loss of Jewel’s naivete. On her debut, she felt youthful and instinctive, but on this, her 12th album, she relies on craft, sculpting the songs so they recall a younger version of her. This tactic has its drawbacks — usually lyrical, with the “you like to read scientific magazines like Vanity Fair/there was a well-written article about serotonin in there” on the sweetly cynical “Plain Jane” typifying her heavy-handed touch — but melodically she’s a stronger writer now than she was then and a better recordmaker, too. All those naïve rough edges were ingratiating on Pieces of You, but they’d seem affected on a mature Jewel, so her decision to return to the form but not the sensibility of her earlier music is what makes Picking Up the Pieces a successful neo-comeback. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Roger Waters The Wall is a new film written and directed by Roger Waters and Sean Evans that combines the concert experience of Pink Floyd‘s The Wall album (as performed on Waters’ 2010-2013 The Wall Live tour) with off-stage ‘road movie’ footage of of the musician and songwriter reflecting on the impact of war on his own family.
The film was shot in 4k and mixed in Dolby ‘Atmos’ and throughout the presentation the concert film is interspersed with documentary scenes of Waters travelling to France to the site where his grandfather is buried, and Italy to a memorial for his father – both lost to war.
On stage and now on film, Waters has channelled his convictions into his art and his music. With Roger Waters The Wall, Waters – together with his fellow musicians and his creative collaborators – brings audiences an exultant ride of a rock and roll concert, and delivers an unforgettable, deeply emotional experience.

Roger Waters The Wall is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Universal Studios with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.40:1. According to the IMDb, Rogers Waters The Wall was shot with the Red One camera, and the results are for the most part extremely sharp and precise looking. It does seem probable that at least some short moments may have been captured with lower fi units, especially with regard to some of the brief shots of various audience members, shots that can be littered with noise and fairly soft looking (see screenshot 16). Otherwise, though, this presentation offers robustly saturated colors and wonderfully deep black levels. A number of lighting choices may detract minimally from detail levels at times, but there are no issues with posterizing or banding, two regular problems that tend to afflict a lot of Blu-ray concert videos. Close-ups reveal commendable levels of fine detail, offering precise looks at (to cite one example) the rather deep crags in Waters’ face. There are some minor image instability issues that tend to crop up in what look like Steadicam shots, where (for example) the camera will travel through an interior room or along a rural road. In some of these tracking shots, side information occasionally destabilizes, but never to an overly problematic level.

Roger Waters The Wall features a Dolby Atmos track (with a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 core, the version reviewed here) which is amazingly crisp, precise and (at times) incredibly bombastic. In fact, without posting a “sonic spoiler”, those audiophiles who love horror films for their sudden LFE startle effects may find their adrenaline pumping rather soon after the film begins. While the concert sections offer the most impressively immersive moments, even the relatively quieter sequences like Waters in his car or at the cemetery offer excellent if subtle ambient environmental effects. Fidelity is superb, with the massed synthesizers and other rhythm instruments in the concert sections sounding clear and distinct, despite Waters’ tendency to voice things densely in midranges. Dynamic range is also extremely wide, both within the concert sequences themselves, but also with regard to the changes between the concert and personal sequences.

Roger Waters, co-founder and principal songwriter of Pink Floyd, fuses the epic and the personal in Roger Waters The Wall, a concert film that goes well beyond the stage. Based on the groundbreaking concept album, Roger Waters The Wall could be called a concept film: it’s a state-of-the-art show that dazzles the senses, combined with an intensely personal road trip that deals with the loss Roger has felt throughout his life due to war. On stage and now on film, Waters has channeled his convictions into his art and his music. With Roger Waters The Wall, Waters – together with his fellow musicians and his creative collaborators – brings audiences an exultant ride of a rock and roll concert, and delivers an unforgettable, deeply emotional experience.

Foreigner’s 1977 debut remains one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the era. The record features the smash hits “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice,” and “Long, Long Way from Home” and was certified 5X Platinum. Now, this multiplatinum rock masterpiece, available as a high-definition download!

Although punk rock’s furious revolution threatened to overthrow rock’s old guard in 1977, bands like Foreigner came along and proved that there was plenty of room in the marketplace for both the violent, upstart minimalism of punk and the airbrushed slickness of what would be called “arena rock.” Along with Boston, Journey, Heart, and others, Foreigner celebrated professionalism over raw emotion. And, looking back, it’s easy to see why they sold millions; not everyone in the world was pissed off, dissatisfied with the economy, or even necessarily looking for a change. In fact, for most suburban American teens, Foreigner’s immaculate rock sound was the perfect soundtrack for cruising through well-manicured neighborhoods in their Chevy Novas. The album spawned some of the biggest FM hits of 1977, including the anthemic “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice,” both of which were anchored — like most of Foreigner’s songs — by the muscular but traditional riffing of guitarist Mick Jones, the soaring vocals of Lou Gramm, and the state-of-the-art rock production values of the day, which allowed the band to sound hard but polished. As pure rock craftsmanship goes, Foreigner was as good as it got in the late ’70s.

Tracklist:
01 – Feels Like The First Time
02 – Cold As Ice
03 – Starrider
04 – Headknocker
05 – The Damage Is Done
06 – Long, Long Way From Home

Double Vision is Foreigner’s seven-time Platinum masterpiece. The rock legends followed their sensational debut with this undeniable classic. It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 and features the band’s exhilarating Top Ten hits “Hot Blooded” and “Double Vision.” This classic-rock staple bursts with thrilling dynamics, stunning lyrics, luscious hooks and breathtaking choruses.

Foreigner promptly followed up its blockbuster debut with the equally successful Double Vision LP in 1978, which featured the FM mega-hits “Hot Blooded” and the driving title track. Opting not to mess with a good formula, the band wisely sticks to the polished hard rock sound that made its first record such a hit. Aside from the big singles, other highlights include the swaggering “Love Has Taken Its Toll” and the more restrained “Blue Morning, Blue Day.” As always, Lou Gramm’s impeccable rock vocals lead the way, supported by Mick Jones’ tasteful, arena-sized guitar riffs.

Tracklist:
01 – Hot Blooded
02 – Blue Morning, Blue Day
03 – You’re All I Am
04 – Back Where You Belong

Agent Provocateur is Foreigner’s 1984 masterpiece. This acclaimed concept album is certified triple Platinum in the United States and platinum in the U.K., Germany and Switzerland. It reached the top five in Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K. and the United States. Included is one of their biggest, chart-topping hits, “I Want To Know What Love Is”.

It took Foreigner three years to release a follow-up to its 1981 blockbuster, 4. Perhaps that wait wasn’t long enough, because Agent Provocateur is a prime example of the best and worst traits of AOR: a handful of remarkable songs padded by toothless filler. Despite contributing a few killer riffs to Foreigner’s ’70s canon, guitarist/keyboardist Mick Jones isn’t known for his six-string abilities. His biggest strength is his knack for melody as a songwriter, keyboardist, and producer, and all these qualities are evident on Agent Provocateur. Of course, vocalist/songwriter Lou Gramm is indispensable as the band’s golden-throated frontman. Jones largely guided things behind the studio console, but a co-producer usually helped, such as Alex Sadkin on this album. “I Want to Know What Love Is” became Foreigner’s first and only number one single, and it’s not hard to see why. Its dreamy, hypnotic feel is due in part to Gramm’s soulful lead vocals and the New Jersey Mass Choir’s background vocals. Jennifer Holliday and the Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey help out as well. “That Was Yesterday,” a terrific hit single, features a catchy chorus and a nifty synthesizer lick. “Reaction to Action” and “Down on Love” were both minor hits, but there’s a huge difference in quality between the two; the former is the epitome of bland, formulaic AOR, while the latter includes a pleasant chorus and a warm keyboard melody. “A Love in Vain” and “Growing Up the Hard Way” have a few good moments too.

Tracklist:
01 – Tooth And Nail
02 – That Was Yesterday
03 – I Want To Know What Love Is
04 – Growing Up The Hard Way
05 – Reaction To Action
06 – Stranger In My Own House
07 – A Love In Vain
08 – Down On Love

Originally released in 1981, Foreigner’s fourth album charted at #1 on the U.S. and included the hugely successful singles “Urgent,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” and “Juke Box Hero”. Experience this seminal 6X Platinum selling progressive rock album as a high resolution recording.

Over the course of their first three late-’70s albums, Foreigner had firmly established themselves (along with Journey and Styx) as one of the top AOR bands of the era. But the band was still looking for that grand slam of a record that would push them to the very top of the heap. Released in 1981, 4 would be that album. In producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange — fresh off his massive success with AC/DC’s Back in Black — guitarist and all-around mastermind Mick Jones found both the catalyst to achieve this and his perfect musical soulmate. Lange’s legendary obsessive attention to detail and Jones’ highly disciplined guitar heroics (which he never allowed to get in the way of a great song) resulted in a collaboration of unprecedented, sparkling efficiency where not a single note is wasted. “Nightlife” is only the first in a series (“Woman in Black,” “Don’t Let Go,” the ’50s-tinged “Luanne”) of energetic, nearly flawless melodic rockers, and with “Juke Box Hero,” the band somehow managed to create both a mainstream hit single and a highly unique-sounding track, alternating heavy metal guitar riffing, chorused vocals, and one of the ultimate “wanna be a rock star” lyrics. As for the mandatory power ballad, the band also reached unparalleled heights with “Waiting for a Girl Like You.” One of the decade’s most successful cross-genre tearjerkers, it has since become a staple of soft rock radio and completely eclipsed the album’s other very lovely ballad, “Girl on the Moon,” in the process. And last but not least, the surprisingly funky “Urgent” proved to be one of the band’s most memorable and uncharacteristic smash hits, thanks to Junior Walker’s signature saxophone solo. Through it all, vocalist Lou Gramm does his part, delivering a dazzling performance that confirmed his status as one of the finest voices of his generation. Three years later, Foreigner would achieve even greater success on a pop level with the uneven Agent Provocateur, but by then Jones and Gramm were locked in an escalating war of egos that would soon lead to the band’s demise. All things considered, 4 remains Foreigner’s career peak.

Foreigner continued its platinum winning streak on Head Games, the band’s third album. By the time Head Games was released, FM radio had fully embraced bands like Foreigner, Journey, and Boston, whose slick hard rock was tough enough to appeal to suburban teens, but smooth enough to be non-threatening to their parents. Tailor-made for the airwaves, “Dirty White Boy” and “Head Games” kept Foreigner at the top of the arena rock heap as the decade came to a close; and the supergroup’s successes would continue well into the ’80s.

While the U.S. was being swept up by disco mania in 1978, Foreigner issued another hard rock tour de force, Double Vision. It was unthinkable that the sextet could outdo its solid 1977 self-titled debut, but it somehow did. Lou Gramm and company issued another set of rock radio staples and rock-steady album tracks, the best-known being such perennial arena rockers as “Hot Blooded” and the title track. But the highpoints didn’t just stop there – such oft-overlooked compositions as “Blue Morning, Blue Day,” “Lonely Children,” and “I Have Waited So Long” are just as strong. Double Vision solidified Foreigner’s standing as a ’70s rock sensation.

Foreigner promptly followed up its blockbuster debut with the equally successful Double Vision LP in 1978, which featured the FM mega-hits “Hot Blooded” and the driving title track. Blowin’ The Blues Away is widely considered of Silver’s definitive albums. In full stride, Silver is joined by his classic quintet, which includes trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Eugene Taylor and drummer Louis Hayes. It features some of Silver’s finest compositions including “Peace” and “Sister Sadie.” Absolutely riveting.

“In preparing these hi def remasters, we were very conscientious about maintaining the feel of the original releases while adding a previously unattainable transparency and depth. It now sounds like you’ve set up your chaise lounge right in the middle of Rudy Van Gelder’s studio!” – Blue Note President, Don Was.
